CREATING A FAMILY LOVE CULTURE Unique traditions and rituals WRITTEN BY: Catherine Osborne

I

t’s February, the month we celebrate matters of the heart. Love is in the air but so is our obsession with hearts, cards and flowers. Our cultural expectations have become increasingly consumer drive and laced with chocolate. While all of that is fine, I want more when it comes to expressions of love within my family. Some substance perhaps… When my son and two friends burst through the door, cheerful and starving, they were grateful to accept an invitation to join our family for dinner. The ensuing banter was easy-going but raucous. One boy was a newcomer; the other was a regular, and well familiar with the daily rhythms of our family. The telltale vibration of an incoming text brought our conversation to an abrupt halt. Fishing his cell phone from his pocket, our new friend began to reply. To my delight, our regular friend hissed, “You better put that phone away or she’s gonna take it from you!” Even my son’s friends know that electronic devices are not welcome at our table. Slightly embarrassed, he tucked his pone away. Our loud and spirited conversation resumed without further electronic interruption. Or so I thought… Later, I heard him remarking how cool it is that we all sit down together for dinner. He added that it was even worth the four calls he missed during dinner! One evening with us, and our new friend had a pretty clear idea of our family identity. I couldn’t help but wonder, what

8

kiddos | February • March 2015

exactly had he seen? Reflecting back to that evening, he would have noted that our interactions were boisterous, yet respectful. Our non-negotiable rules about electronic devices were obvious, yet plainly accepted by all. The “culture” of our family, which comprised all the rituals, norms and traditions that we practice, was blatantly obvious, even to our young friend. My children would simply shrug and say, “It’s just the way we do things around here.” This young friend of my son taught me a little something about love. Not just any love, but family love. A day fully immersed with our family caused him to remark, “Hey I like the way your family does things!” He had witnessed our unique culture of love. Loving, tightly knit families work hard to foster a positive culture. In addition to providing their children with an identity, a loving culture offers a sense of belonging and a wonderful source of support when difficult times arise. The beliefs that children hold about right and wrong generally reflect the values and beliefs of their own family culture. Despite the changing lifestyles that characterize modern society, the family remains the central feature of contemporary life. In recent times, the family structure has undergone significant change. There is no right or wrong when it comes to all the variations in family structure; as long as a family has a culture of love, it can thrive. Families that love and support each other can do so in virtually any type of family arrangement. Individual family cultures clearly define their own values. These may include

respect, support, generosity, fun, health or hard work. In a family that values health, all members know that chocolate for breakfast just isn’t going to fly. Everyone in the family knows the value of good nutrition, so healthy meals are just standard fare. That’s just the way they do things. A set of rules, which guide family interactions and behaviors is important. These can include guidelines on conflict resolution, bedtime rituals, chores or rules surrounding technology use. Each member is clear on the limits of what is permissible. Family culture usually includes unique traditions and rituals. Family meals together, rites of passage, pizza nights, holiday celebrations, all offer a sense of connectedness. So what exactly did our young friend teach me about love? He drove home for me the notion that a culture of love truly exists in our family. As with many things that we value, this loving culture requires attention, practice and constant reinforcement. The fact that our culture was so plainly visible to our young friend gives me great satisfaction. Now our young friend, who has since become a regular in our home, happily leaves his phone in his coat pocket, and has been known to chirp at any newcomers, “Hey watch out! No phones at the table. That’s just how they do things around here!”

Sodium And Kids WRITTEN BY: American Heart Association

ost kids get too much salt, but as parents, you can help set them on a healthier path. Especially in kids, taste preferences for salt are shaped by what is offered to them. Kids may not prefer so much salt if they’re given foods with less sodium from an early age. Too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and several other serious health problems.

How much sodium should my kids get? The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg of sodium a day for all Americans for ideal heart health. How much sodium are children and youth in the U.S. eating? On average, kids ages 2-19 eat more than 3,100 mg sodium per day, about double the amount the American Heart Association recommends. The older children get, the more calories and sodium they tend to eat.In the 2-19 year-old age group for boys and girls, boys ages 12-19 eat the most sodium — an average of 4,220 mg/day. Girls in the 12-19 year-old age group eat about 2,950 mg/day. Where do kids get their sodium? Children ages 6-18 get about 15 percent of their daily sodium at breakfast, 30 percent at lunch, 39 percent at dinner and 16 percent at snack time. Grocery store and restaurant foods make up 83 percent of the sodium these kids eat, which means it is already in their food before they buy it and they can’t take it out. According to national data about Americans’ eating habits, these foods are the leading contributors to the sodium 6-18 year-olds eat:

How can too much sodium hurt my child’s health? Kids with high-sodium diets are almost 40 percent more likely to have elevated blood pressure than kids with lower-sodium diets. High blood pressure in childhood is linked to early development of heart disease and risk for premature death, and unfortunately, the number of American children with high blood pressure is on the rise, and about 1 in 6 children ages 8-17 years already has raised blood pressure. Eating less sodium can help lower blood pressure in children and teens. How can I help reduce the sodium my kids get? Making sure your kids get less sodium today can help prevent heart disease tomorrow, especially for kids who are overweight and obese.

Here are more ideas for parents: • Model healthy eating. Use the American Heart Association’s diet and lifestyle recommendations as a guide. • Involve your kids when you’re pre paring healthy meals. Try some of our kid-friendly recipes. • Ask your grocery manager to offer your family’s favorite foods in versions with less sodium. • Before you go out to eat, look up nutrition information online to find the healthier choices. • Support changes that will lead to healthier meals in child care centers and schools. • Take the pledge to reduce the sodium you eat. Your healthy habits will likely influence your kids, too. k

New Florida Child Passenger Seat Law

I

Effective January 1, 2015 n Florida, children through age 5 are required to be transported safely in motor vehicles in child restraints as of January 1, 2015.

BUCKLE UP

The Florida Department of Transportation and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles are working to ensure everyone is properly secured and safe every trip, every time. Simply put, no trip is too short to not buckle up! What does it mean to properly provide protection using a child restraint? There is a plethora of information on the subject of using child restraints, some including age and weight figures. These are recommendations from professionals on the best, safest way to protect your child, but what will law enforcement use? To properly use a child restraint, read the labels and manual on your child’s restraint and use it according to the manufacturer’s requirements for that seat. Not using your child’s restraint as

required by the seat manufacturer will result in a receiving: •A moving violation •3 points on driver’s license •Minimum $60 fine plus court costs and fees All seats have slightly different usage requirements, which is why improper restraint usage is such a problem. Download the Florida CPS Law Update Tip Cards on how to choose the best car seat for your child, as well as installation tips, then visit a fitting station near you for assistance on installation. k

Share The Love Long gone is the time when Valentine’s Day was an occasion only for those who are romantically involved. WRITTEN BY: Andrea Minsky

I

t seems like everywhere we go during valentines’ season we can find something that is relevant for every person in our lives; extended family members, friends, even coworkers and pets! The good thing about Valentines’ day in this era is that anyone can participate in a number of fun activities without having to be romantically involved with anyone. If you are fortunate enough to belong to a family, have children or are a part of a couple following are some fun ways to enjoy the Valentines’ Day. Color it Red Have family members wear something red. It doesn’t have to be a complete outfit. It could be something as simple as a red pair of socks, a tie, a bracelet or red earrings. Or how about extending some red to the day’s meals? You could have a red berry smoothie blended with some cranberry juice for example. Try some oatmeal with a touch of red food coloring. If you prefer a more natural approach try adding a small slice of a fresh beet to the mix, being careful to keep it whole and removing once the desired red color is achieved. Get Crafty Arts and crafts not only create lifelong bonding experiences between children and parents, it also improves dexterity and promotes social, cognitive and emotional development. Children enjoy the process of engaging in an activity that produces a tangible end result as well. Arts and crafts can be a way to make – instead of buy – gifts for extended family mem-

The Treasure Hunt No holiday celebration is complete without a treasure hunt. They are so much fun, for adults as well as children. The great thing about a treasure hunt is that it doesn’t have to break the bank. For toddlers, little hearts made out of construction paper can be dropped on the floor creating a trail to the treasure. For older children and adults, clues can be left around the house. The fun is in the hunt not so much in the find. So make the hunt the focus of the effort. Create Traditions Create your own family traditions. These can be practiced throughout the years, even as children grow up and have families of their own. One tradition might be to leave a note or even a heart shaped lollipop on every family members’ nightstand. Whatever it is make sure it is something special just for you and your family.

bers like grandparents who are often thrilled with the gifts they receive and keep them as memorabilia that they share when the kids become adults. If you are intimidated with the thought of doing crafts don’t be. Just pop into your local craft store, talk to an associate or pick up a couple of books with easy to do, inexpensive age appropriate craft projects. You will be glad you did!! Have a Fancy Night in Plan ahead and get dressed up for dinner. I mean really dressed. Make it super formal. Put on the fanciest dress in the closet. Select 2 or 3 outfits for the kiddies and have them choose which they would like to wear. If you have little girls who like being princesses, let them wear their princess gowns. If you have prince Charmings and they have no prince charming costumes let them wear pants and a shirt and tie. Dress up some jeans if they have no “real” pants. If you plan ahead you can always go to the local thrift store and pick up pants, ties or costumes relatively cheap. Pretend you are all at a fancy restaurant or, better still, at the palace and put on airs and graces just for fun. Call each other King/Queen….. or Prince/Princess….. You get my point. A Valentine Story At the dinner table create a valentine story. It can go something like this: “I remember one valentines’ day when……” Each member/guest at the table can add a sentence – or two – until the story is complete.

Love Notes If you pack your family’s lunch drop a post it love note inside the lunch bag. If they don’t do packed lunch, place a note in/on a book or folder you know your child uses every day. You can follow the same principle for your significant other maybe leaving a note in her purse or his pocket or on the laptop. Add a little spice to theirs. Maybe give them a coupon to be redeemed for a personal service from you! Remember this is Valentine’s Day! Focus on Love Don’t forget to focus on love. Have a family discussion on what it means to love and to be loved. Encourage your children to articulate their understanding of love however simple it may be. Extend the discussion to include people outside of the family circle. And finally let us not wait for a special day to express our love to each other. Let us do it every day of the year. k

Peyton List American Teen Actress & Model WRITTEN BY: Estefania Arosemena

Peyton is best known for Disney Channel’s Jessie series where she plays Emma Ross and has also starred in famous films that include 27 Dresses, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Remember Me.

A

fter The Falls 18th Annual Miracle on 136th Street Holiday Parade, a memorable holiday tradition for many families in South Florida, Kiddos Magazine had the opportunity to get to know a little better American actress, Peyton List. She was this year’s Celebrity Grand Marshal singing joyous music and a special single from her upcoming album during a magical afternoon of snow globe performances, belly dancing, one million lights and more. Peyton is best known for Disney Channel’s Jessie series where she plays Emma Ross and has also starred in famous films that include 27 Dresses, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Remember Me. Our Kiddos Kid Reporter had the chance to welcome her in Miami and learn more about Peyton’s career footsteps. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Welcome Peyton, how does it feel to be in Miami? Peyton List: I am so happy to be here today, everybody is so welcoming, it has been awesome. My whole family is out here today and I was originally born in Florida so everybody out there seating on the coach is actually my entire dad side of the family.

18

kiddos | February • March 2015

The Kiddos Kid Reporter: You play the role as Emma Ross on the show Jessie, who’s a fashionista teenager living in New York, can you tell us a little bit about what is new on Season #4? Peyton List: Good question, yeah well, we are in the middle of filming season 4 right now and you see a lot of the kids growing up like Emma who is sort of finding herself and

testing her boundaries with Jessie and Bertram. Her sister Zuri is going out too, having her first boy girl dance and is so amusing just get to see the kids and how they are going though their teenage years. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: How does it feel to interact with a 7-foot water monitor lizard? Peyton List: Oh my gosh! You know a lot about it. Indeed, Mrs. Kipling is a 7-foot water monitor lizard and its fun since there are always like 3 trainers around her at all times so I joke that she is like the “biggest diva” on set. She hasn’t been much in season 4, but we did have this episode where we have a girls day, I don’t know if you saw that episode, and it was really fun since we had to wear steel-toed boots and couldn’t stand really close together, but she is actually super cool. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: You have a twin brother (Spencer), are you both similar? Peyton List: My twin brother Spencer, him and I, I feel like we don’t look that much alike and no one actually thinks that we are related, plus he is much taller than me and has brown hair, while I’m still blonde. People usually think we are best friends. Right now he’s back in LA with my little brother Phoenix.

The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What is your favorite book? Peyton List: Well, I just went to the Hunger Games Premier: Mockingjay - Part 1 and those are one of my favorite books’ series, but I also love the Mortal Instruments series and one of my favorite books from this particular series is City of Bones. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Can you describe Peyton List in 3 different words? Peyton List: Ahhh! describe my self in 3 different words? Peyton laughed… Positive, crazy and fashionable. k Credits: The Kiddos Kid Reporter Clothing: Peek kids at Village of Miracle Park Photography: Kathleen Ballard Photography Video Production: Filmart Location: The Falls Mall

Family Bicycling Benefits WRITTEN BY: Caroline Parker

Cycling produces many physical and developmental benefits for children

T

he opportunities for children to safely ride their bicycles in Miami-Dade County are growing by the minute! And this spring, with the beautiful South Florida weather, there is no excuse for kids not to hit a local bike trail, tour, or event. Cycling produces many physical and developmental benefits for children. And the best part is that you don’t have to be a star athlete in order to

learn how to ride a bike and have fun doing it! Children who cycle regularly control their weight and blood pressure; maintain bone, muscle, and joint health; reduce their risk of diabetes; improve their psychological welfare; and even perform better academically. So, make riding bike part of your family routine by riding to school, afterschool or on the weekend, and help your family grow healthy and strong.

So, what are the best kid-friendly bike parks? Do you have a tiny kiddo who is ready to learn how to bike? Some great training grounds for bicycle fitness are Matheson Hammock Park, A.D. Barnes Park, and David T. Kennedy Park. Is your energetic adventurer eager to try something more exciting? Check out the novice mountain bike trails at Virginia Key Mountain Bike Park and Amelia Earhart Mountain Bike Trails. For more experienced youth, the

most technical trails can be found at Oleta River State Park. Remember that Florida Law dictates that cyclists under the age of 16 must wear a helmet! Don’t miss these kid-friendly, upcoming bike events: Kidical Mass returns on Sunday, February 8th, 3pm - 5pm, offering a legal, safe and FUN bike ride for kids and their families starting from Sunset Place Mall, South Miami. The 4th Annual Gables Bike Day takes place on Sunday, March 1st, 11am-3pm, in front of Coral Gables City Hall. This free

Coral Gables Museum will offer a special Spring Break Camp: I Bike Coral Gables, March 23rd -27th, in which children ages 5-12 can bring, decorate and ride their bikes all week long on the Museum Plaza and nearby parks. Read to Learn Books for Free

Getting Books into the Hands and Homes of Young Readers WRITTEN BY: Michael Malone

grow up in poverty have few books at home. Too often there to imagine, but true.

any moms and dads will tell you that, no matter how busy their lives, a favorite part of their day is to curl up with their little one to read a book together. The book and its story provide a treasure trove of time together– the chance to adventure in a new land, spark curiosity, and explore hopes and dreams. Children are inspired, informed, entertained and reassured while they read together with Mami or Papi. But if there’s no book? Most children who grow up in poverty have few books at home. Too often there are none at all. Hard to imagine, but true. This lack of books has a colossal impact on a child’s development – emotional, social and, certainly, academically. Children who are not exposed to books at an early age struggle

with reading as they grow older, in school and in life. So let’s get these children more books, you say. Great idea! Several years ago, The Children’s Trust launched Read to Learn, a countywide partnership with the schools, library system and other partners to help more children in Miami-Dade read well, especially by the time they reach the third grade, a crossroads for reading and learning. One program that grew out of it focuses specifically on getting books into the homes of children in lowincome neighborhoods. Read to Learn Books for Free places bookshelves stocked with new and gently used age-appropriate books in highly visited locations in targeted areas. Locations include government benefits offices, low-income housing

sites, and health clinics, among others. Children are urged to take and keep one book from the shelf to help build their home library. The initiative requires about 5,000 books a month to sustain. Families with an abundant supply of books at home – books your child has outgrown – are urged to donate to program collection bins located at the Coral Gables and Pinecrest Public Library branches, all Books & Books retail stores, Miami-Dade Police stations and other sites. See locations and contact numbers below along with an alternative option to purchase a book online for donation. The Center for Writing and Literature at Miami Dade College, the organizers of the Miami International Book Fair, among the most prestigious fairs in the country, administers this initiative for The Children’s Trust. So enjoy curling up with your little one to

read. And if you happen to notice a stack of books in the corner, ones that you haven’t read for a while, consider donating to the nearest Read to Learn Books for Free bin. Your generosity will open a new world to a child somewhere. k

4. The Book with No Pictures By B.J. Novak As the title states, this book has no pictures (though some children say that the words themselves are pictures). This is a book that must be

Joins the Hour of Code Event

A

t Pinecrest Elementary, we are always exploring technology and expanding options and opportunities for our digital learners. Pinecrest Elementary recently participated in the Hour of Code, an international program designed to give students a hands-on experience in computer programming. The event is organized by Code.org and supported by Apple, Google, Microsoft and over 100 additional partners during Computer Science Education Week from December 8-14. Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction designed to demystify computer science and show that anybody can learn the basics. Pinecrest Elementary students joined students across the country and were exposed to learning code through different modalities dur-

ing this week. Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers demonstrated the activity to their whole class on their Interactive Boards. First through fifth grade teachers took their students to the computer labs where they worked individually or in pairs to complete the Hour of Code. The activities had students create cards, games, online drawings and other activities. The Hour of Code is designed to make computer programming fun and approachable. In traditional programming text is used, but the Hour of Code activities used a tool called “Blockly”, which uses visual blocks that you can drag and drop to write programs. This is how even university students learn the programming basics. Overall the stu-

dents had a great time expanding their technology skills and parents have reported that they continued their “code” work at home. In true Pinecrest fashion, Pinecrest parents always support and seek enrichment opportunities for their children. Some parents extended this learning even more by taking their children to the Apple Store where a free Basic Programming class was being hosted. k
