MARLINS FOUNDATION
“Compression For Life” WRITTEN BY: American Heart Association
J
eff Urgelles, Miami Marlins Bullpen Catcher, knows firsthand how CPR is the gift that keeps on giving. On August 20, 2012, while warming up for a game in Arizona, Jeff helped save the life of a woman who went into cardiac arrest by facilitating CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Jeff is a certified fire fighter and paramedic and knew exactly what to do in case of an emergency. She was transported to the nearest hospital where doc-

tors were able to regain a stable heartbeat. The young lady’s name is Jayne Powers, an Arizona Diamondbacks game day employee. If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of everyone that day, she wouldn’t be alive today to share her story. Shortly after this heroic act, the Marlins Foundation honored Jeff with a $5,000 contribution towards his very own program called “Compressions For Life,” to start a CPR class for the kids at the local Boys & Girls Club. With
the support of the Marlins Foundation, Jeff wanted to help spread awareness of the importance of CPR so more individuals can survive to share their story. The Marlins Foundation partnered with the local American Heart Association to start the Compression for Life Program, a program geared to teaching heart health and providing CPR and first aid training to the youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami Dade.
Without immediate, effective CPR from a bystander, a person’s chance of surviving sudden cardiac arrest decreases seven to ten percent per minute. Unfortunately, on average, less than one-third of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR, which can double or triple a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. Getting people to act quickly in a cardiac arrest emergency is critical to a victim’s survival because time is not on their side. In order to increase the number of laypersons trained in CPR, the American Heart Association advocates that CPR training using hands-on practice be a high school graduation requirement in the State of Florida. About Jeff Urgelles Jeff was born in Miami, Florida, where he attended and played baseball at Southwest Miami Senior High School. He went to Broward Community College on a baseball scholarship, later transferring to Savannah State University. After his junior year, Jeff was drafted in the 2003 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, later going to play for the Toronto Blue Jays. Jeff played in their Minor League System from 2003-2006. He later returned back to Miami to go to school to become a certified fire fighter and certified paramedic. Now entering his 5th season, he joined the Marlins as
the Bullpen Coordinator in 2009. 12 Small Acts Of Love
Fun Little Ways to Tell Your Family “I Love You” WRITTEN BY: Sue Kirchner
5
oms, remember when Valentine’s Day was a ROMANTIC holiday? You know, before you had kids? You’d get flowers, you’d dress up to look super hot and enjoy a candlelit dinner. Now that we have kids, Valentine’s Day has become a Family Holiday. It’s more about which character to choose for the tiny little Valentine’s for everyone in the kids’ class, throwing love notes in your daughter’s school lunch box, watching the cats eat the flowers, and begging your son to leave some chocolate for the rest of the family are just a few examples. But, you know what? That’s fine. After all, your kids are the result of your hot romance and proof of love. So instead of getting a babysitter and going out to dinner, celebrate Valentine’s Day as a family and have fun doing little things for each other all week that say “I Love You.” I hope these ideas inspire you to demonstrate your love and show your family how much you care not only on Valentine’s, but throughout the rest of the year. Why should all the fun be just on Valentine’s Day, right? 1. Have a Heart. You can have so much fun with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. You can surprise your daughter by cutting out a heart into her peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich for her school lunch box. You can cut a small heart shape into one slice of the bread so you could see the red jelly. You can also make French toast and cut the bread into heart shapes. Then throw some cut strawberries on top for color! 2. Turn Dinner Upside Down. Let the kids eat dessert first on Valentine’s Day. Anything that breaks rou-
tine is big fun for kids. 3. A Night Out, at Home. Can’t find a babysitter for Valentine’s Day this year? No problem. You can still have a special night at home with the kids by cooking together dinner and having the kids serve you as waiters with a romantic, candle lit feast. Let the kiddos laugh and be a part of this special night! 4. A Sweet Treat. Be creative and try out a new dessert recipe every Valentine’s Day. There are so many
7. Let’s Do Lunch. Surprise them by showing up at school and taking them out for lunch on Valentine’s Day. (Call ahead to let the school and teacher know!) 8. The Honey-Done List. Knock something off the Honey To-Do List. Just because we celebrate as a family doesn’t mean you forget your husband. Surprise your honey spouse by taking that little annoying chore off of his mental to-do list and I guarantee you that he’ll really appreciate it. 9. Balloons in the Bedroom. This is a great idea! Tie 8 love notes to 8 helium balloons and put them over the bed to surprise your husband. How cute is that? (The kids would love it too.)
desserts you could make as a family this year such as Valentine’s Day Brownies, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate Strawberry Pound Cake Hearts. Visit ChocolateCakeMoments.com. for more ideas. 5. Deliver The Love. Leave love notes for your kids (or spouse) around the house. For example, you can tape a candy to a small index card and hide them around the house for the kids to find. * Handy Tip: Write down where you hid them all so you don’t get ants in your family room a few weeks from now. 6. It’s A Date. Give your child a coupon for a date night. Do something special just with them and get it on the calendar now so they can look forward to their special time with you.
10. Seeing Red. Be silly with your Valentine’s Day dinner and serve only red or pink food. Spaghetti with red sauce, red peppers, and chocolate fondue with strawberries, raspberries, and red grapes is a fun red menu. 11. Game On. Have your kids favorite game set up and ready to play when they come home from school on Valentine’s Day. You know the one they always want you to play that you never get around to playing? Today’s the day! 12. How Do I Love Thee? For Valentine’s Day dinner, a good idea is to play a game where you go around the table and say three things you love most about each other. It’s a great ego boost and forces you to say the little things that sometimes get lost and are never said during the daily grind. k

Valentine’s Day Lemon Shortbread Cookies There’s no better way to show your children how much you love them on Valentine’s Day then by baking homemade heart-shaped cookies. WRITTEN BY: Cristy and Michael Paez (Mr. & Mrs. P)
DIRECTIONS
There’s no better way to show your children how much you love them on Valentine’s Day than by baking homemade heart-shaped cookies. Allow them to help you decorate the treats and you are guaranteed to earn the title of best mom or dad of the year!
1.- In a large bowl, combine the butter and sugar with a hand or stand mixer over medium speed. 2.- Next, add the egg, egg yolk, salt, vanilla, white pepper and lemon zest to the bowl and mix until fully incorporated.
INGREDIENTS FOR COOKIES 3.- Slowly add flour one cup at a time until the dough is firm and turns into a big ball.
2 sticks of room temperature unsalted butter 1 large egg
4.- create two round disks out of the dough. Cover each disk in plastic wrap and chill for an hour to three hours in the refrigerator.
1 egg yolk 1 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon of ground white
5.- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a few baking sheets with parchment paper.
pepper Zest of one lemon 3 cups of flour INGREDIENTS FOR ROYAL ICING 3 ounces of egg whites 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 cups of confectioner’s sugar
6.- Roll out the chilled dough until it is about half an inch thick. Begin to cut out the cookies using the cookie cutters of your choice.
7.- Bake the cookies for 10-15 minutes depending on the size of the cookies. The cookies are done baking once the edges turn golden brown. DIRECTIONS FOR ROYAL ICING In a large bowl, whisk together egg whites, vanilla and sugar until smooth. We dyed one half red. The other half of the icing remained white. We used the white icing as glue for the multi-colored sprinkles we added to some of the cookies and the red icing to write on the cookies using a piping bag and a thin tip. Feel free to let your kiddo’s imagination run wild. For more family-friendly recipes, visit their cooking blog at www.MrsandMrsPMiami.com

Exploring materials

“T
he wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences. We must widen the range of topics and goals, the types of situations we offer and their degree of structure, the kinds and combinations of resources and materials, and the possible interactions with things, peers, and adults.” Loris Malaguzzi (1920-1994)
imagination and creativity. The focus is learning through experience, not by activities!
Since the beginning of the school’s establishment, KLA Schools have devoted efforts in presenting children with a vast variety of materials and possibilities. The educators truly believe, as a school founded in the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, that through these experiences, where the child is given the right “of freedom to venture beyond the known” (Loris Malaguzzi), the child is constantly being exposed to developmental milestones, such as: fine motor development, shapes and colors, social development, language development, cognitive development and every day connections/associations. Through experiences and explorations, this type of education encourages ideas,
Teachers at KLA Schools believe that children have the right and the ability to express their thinking, theories, ideas, learning and emotions in many ways. These languages can include drawing, paint, clay, wire, natural and recycled materials, light and shadow, dramatic play, music and dance. They can also include expression with words through metaphors, stories or poems of the children’s interpretations and reflections about their experiences. In fact, there is no separation between what is considered traditionally artistic expression and academic education. As a school, children are provided with a wide range of materials and media, and a diversity of experiences are welcomed so that

children encounter many avenues for thinking, revising, constructing, negotiating, developing and symbolically expressing their thoughts and feelings. The environment plays a very strong role. The environment is viewed as the third teacher with the power to provoke curiosity and learning and encourage interaction. This is why the school strongly values each child’s transition; moreover, in order for there to be a high quality learning process, each child must feel safe and comfortable with his/her environment and surroundings. The Importance of Early Intervention
in Treating Autism WRITTEN BY: Miami Children’s Hospital
A
pproximately one in every 88 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. As families learn of a child’s diagnosis, they can gain hope from the knowledge that early identification of affected children can help lessen the impact of this developmental disorder, thus significantly improving a child’s overall quality of life. “Autism spectrum disorders are a heterogeneous group of complex developmental disorders that appear within a child’s first three years of life,” explains Dr. Roberto Tuchman, Director of the Autism and Neurodevelopment Program at the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center, which provides early diagnosis and interventions for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders. “For parents, knowing the developmental milestones that take place

during a baby’s first 18 months of life is crucial, as this can help with identifying signs of autism spectrum disorders or other developmental conditions,” said Dr. Tuchman. As a developmental disorder appearing in the first 3 years of life, autism affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. There are many different causes of autism spectrum disorders. As part of the neurological work-up, a neurologist may order genetic testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain or an electroencephalogram (EEG). The Early Signs Parents of autistic children are commonly the first ones to suspect something is “different” about their child. Frequently they have concerns by the time the baby is 2 years old. Treatment can be helpful at any age, however scientific studies have demonstrated that early intervention can ensure optimal outcomes for children with
developmental disorders. “There is no medical test to diagnose autism,” says Dr. Tuchman, “that’s why identifying early symptoms is so helpful in getting children the proper medical attention.” He noted, “Children with autism often miss major milestones or are delayed in some skills, such as the ability to follow and react to faces, responding to name, pointing, and sharing their excitement with others.” Additionally, children with autism often have difficulties with verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions and pretend play. Some children with autism may appear without symptoms before age 1 or 2 and then suddenly “regress” and lose language or social skills they had previously gained. The important point is to seek advice from your pediatrician early if there is any concern about a child’s development.
Seeking Treatment Studies show that interventions starting as early as 18 months can help improve a child’s ability to interact appropriately with his or her environment, and develop language and social skills. Parents are encouraged to identify a facility specializing in early recognition and intervention of autism spectrum disorders. excited about tennis By: “Arantxa” Sanchez Vicario WRITTEN BY: Natalie Davis
SPANISH FORMER WORLD NO. 1 PROFESSIONAL TENNIS PLAYER.

hroughout a child’s development many factors play a role and shape these individuals into the adults they will eventually become. With that being said, consider things such as education, social, economic, and environmental influences, even extracurricular activities. As parents, do you let the child decide fully which activities; sports and interests he/she wants to pursue or do you “have a say?” Another interesting aspect that may affect which sport or hobby a child

wants to try is geographical location. Looking at different areas on the map, you can find a stronger influence on certain types of activities being offered to children… and adults. Living here in sunny Florida allows for optimal time outdoors and sports such as tennis, cycling and boating. Miami is home to some of the most renowned tennis tournaments, cycling races, and boat shows throughout the States. And coming up in March, children and adult tennis enthusiasts have to opportunity to see
some of their favorite tennis stars in action. Kiddos Magazine caught up with world famous tennis pro “Arantxa” Sanchez Vicario for some feedback and advice for kids looking to hit it big on the courts. Arantxa recommends children who are just starting out with tennis to practice at least two times per week for approximately 30 minutes. Of course, this time may increase as the child grows and is able to determine if tennis is something he/she wants to do seriously or just for fun.
While children are catching on to things earlier and earlier nowadays – whether it’s education, electronics or physical abilities – Arantxa comments that age 7 is a good age to start with tennis. Arantxa tells Kiddos Magazine that both of her older brothers (Emilio and Javier) played tennis as children and went on to play professionally. So basically, it runs in the family, and Arantxa tells us that she very much wanted to follow in her brother’s footsteps. Playing tennis competitively began early on for Arantxa; she had already won the Spanish National Championship by age 13. To explain further, she tells us that in order to play ten-

nis professionally, one must participate in at least 3 pro tournaments and obtain ranking points. After that, professional tennis players can participate in any of the calendar tournaments and with every win, your ranking increases in the sport. Anraxta believes that children should be involved in tennis or any sport they enjoy because it promotes a healthy lifestyle. Tennis, especially, requires a lot of technique, strategy, and discipline which helps develop and mature the mind. Arantxa, originally from Barcelona, Spain, won four Grand Slam singles titles, six Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, and four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. k

community Walk Like MADD
mothers against drunk driving WRITTEN BY: Walk Like Madd National Center
The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.
W
alk Like MADD is MADD’s signature event to celebrate a brighter future without drunk driving and underage drinking. This event helps us raise both awareness and funds to stop drunk driving and underage drinking, and provide support to victims and survivors. Last year, tens of thousands of people in over 60 cities across the nation participated, and together we raised almost 3 million dollars to provide our programs and services at no cost. With every step taken and each dollar raised, walkers are supporting MADD’s life-saving mission to keep our families and communities safe. About MADD Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. With the help of those who want a safer future, MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving® will end this danger on America’s roads. PowerTalk 21® is the national day for parents to talk with their kids about alcohol, using the proven

strategies of Power of Parents® to reduce the risk of underage drinking. And as one of the largest victim services organizations in the U.S., MADD also supports drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge, serving one person every eight minutes through local MADD victim advocates and at 1-877-MADD-HELP. Why We Fundraise When MADD was founded in 1980, more than 21,000 people were killed in drunk driving crashes each year. Since then, we’ve been able to cut that deadly toll in half, but there is still more work to be done to eliminate drunk driving, prevent underage drinking and serve victims.
Did you know? • On average, one in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.
• Every two minutes, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash.
• Every day in America, another 27 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes.
• Drunk driving costs this country $132 billion a year.
• Almost half of all 10th graders drink alcohol. Walk Like MADD is MADD’s signature event to celebrate a brighter
future without drunk driving and underage drinking. Every step taken will help raise funds and awareness for MADD’s programs and services that will serve to keep our children and communities safe. The Impact Funds raised through Walk Like MADD events allow MADD staff and volunteers to provide programs and services to victims and communities across the country: MADD provides FREE emotional support and assistance with medical and legal struggles that follow a drunk driving crash. MADD supports the heroes in law enforcement who work to keep our roads safe. MADD works with state and local legislators to adopt tougher laws, including requiring ignition interlocks for all DUI offenders, and closing the loopholes in many existing laws.
MADD supports the development of technology to determine automatically whether or not the driver is above the legal limit of .08 and failing to operate if the driver is drunk. MADD implements educational programs for parents, teens, schools and communities to help prevent underage drinking. These programs are free to the community. You Can Make a Difference Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable, but stopping it requires the involvement of every concerned citizen. You can help make your community a healthier and safer place by joining a growing number of people across the nation working to prevent drunk driving. Your support of MADD - your time, interest and energy - makes all of our efforts possible. Your help make an impact in your community, state and
the nation as a whole, and we greatly appreciate your support and continued partnership. Together, we will put an end to drunk driving. k

1. Music is a Rainbow By Stephan Earl Music and rainbows capture the joy and imagination of the human spirit. It’s no coincidence that there are seven notes of the musical scale and seven colors of the rainbow. With pitch-perfect rhymes and colorful illustrations, Music Is a Rainbow makes a whimsical connection between sound and color. “Indigo notes have darker tones, like owls at night making hoots and moans. Violet notes sound like butterfly wings, whisking through gardens near watery springs.” Parents can also associate each color within the story with notes from the solfège scale: DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA, TI, DO. The sturdy 8” board book format is perfect for parents and toddlers to share. 2. Wild About Books By Judy Sierra In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal—tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. “She even found

waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter.” In no time at all, Molly has them “forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks,” going “wild, simply wild, about wonderful books.” Judy Sierra’s funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown’s lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys! For children 3 and up. 3. Turtles in Paradise By Jennifer L. Holm In Jennifer L. Holm’s New York Times bestselling, Newbery Honor winning middle grade historical fiction novel, life isn’t like the movies. But then again, 11-year-old Turtle is no Shirley Temple. She’s smart and tough and has seen enough of the world not to expect a Hollywood ending. After all, it’s 1935 and jobs and money and sometimes even dreams are scarce. So when Turtle’s mama gets a job housekeeping for a lady who doesn’t like kids, Turtle says goodbye without a tear and heads off to Key West, Florida to
live with relatives she’s never met. Florida’s like nothing Turtle’s ever seen before though. It’s hot and strange, full of rag tag boy cousins, family secrets, scams, and even buried pirate treasure! Before she knows what’s happened, Turtle finds herself coming out of the shell she’s spent her life building, and as she does, her world opens up in the most unexpected ways. For children 8 to 12 years old. 4. Olive and the Big Secret By Tor Freeman Olive learns the hard way that keeping secrets is tough, and telling them can make for a whole lot of trouble! When Molly shares a secret with Olive, the urge to tell is just too great! Olive tells Joe who tells Matt who tells Lola. But Lola is best friends with Molly. Uh-oh, the secret is out, and Olive is in for it! For children 4 to 8 years old. 5. Love, Splat (Splat the Cat) By Rob Scotton It’s Valentine’s Day and Splat has a special valentine for a certain someone in his class. Her name is Kitten,
and Splat likes her even more than fish sticks and ice cream. But Kitten doesn’t seem to like him at all. And then there’s Splat’s rival, Spike, who also likes Kitten. Will Splat’s heartfelt valentine win Kitten’s paw in the end? For children 4 to 8 years old. 6. Dragons Love Tacos By Adam Rubin Dragons love tacos. They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Buckets and buckets of tacos. Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You’re in red-hot trouble. For children 3-5 years old. 7. When You Reach Me By Rebecca Stead By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it’s safe to go, and they know who to avoid. Like the crazy guy on the corner. k

There’s just something about the sun that’s brings out everyone’s sense of togetherness, and maybe, the taste of sweet chocolate. At this year’s 8th Annual International Chocolate Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, kids especially had to the opportunity to learn more about one of their main food groups – chocolate. From cooking demonstrations sponsored by Whole Foods Market where master chocolatiers and chefs demonstrated delicious chocolate recipes to chocolate tasting, chocolate poetry and more, this annual event has become a favorite for local Miamians. Also presented at the festival were lectures on the

Children had the opportunity to get hands-on with several cooking demonstrations as well, creating homemade hot chocolate, sugar cookies with white chocolate cream, and chocolate fondue. With today’s health-crazed consumers, be sure that healthy eating habits such as vegan recipes and yoga classes for adults and kids were included as part of the event.
