My Mom Is A Super Mom! WRITTEN BY: Estefania Arosemena
T
oday there are plenty of moms who want to be super moms, without giving up on their daily regime. To keep your super mom powers going strong it is important to keep learning and embrace new useful things. Our kiddos grow and parents are forced to respond intelligently to changing circumstances. After all, what is less predictable than a week in the life of a mom with one or two kids enrolled in school? There are always new challenges, friendships and academic demands in our kids’ lives where a mother’s support plays a vital role. Luckily, there are some ways to make the life of a working mother more manageable and create free

extra hours a day! Today working moms can develop a balanced life without leaving their kids behind through flextime in the workforce, using technology to their advantage, smart housekeeping and staying fit.
Flextime in the workforce: Flextime was invented by, for and because of women. Co-parenting is still a goal but not a reality in the majority of families, so working from home one or two days a week allows moms to stay in the workforce and have more time for motherhood. Taking time off for a parent teacher conference, a school play or an appointment at the orthodontist are just a few examples. For this reason, it is im-
portant for mothers to find a job where flex requests don’t interfere with their careers and allow them to attain a balanced work-life integration.
Smart housekeeping: Usually women who have acquired some free time in handling house chores have the help of their hubby and kids. It is important to start the kids on chores while young for them to learn the importance of being organized and clean. This can also be a good predictor of success and teaches them to be helpful individuals on their own. Whether washing the dishes, making the bed or mopping, smart moms should encourage everybody in the house to
enlist in one or more chores per week. Your hubby and kids will have more time to spend with mom to enjoy more free time with you on the weekends, taking lessons, having dinner at a nice restaurant or even doing homework together. Moms will also get to have more time to enjoy themselves!
Using technology to your advantage: Another effective tool for wise moms is technology. In today’s world, smartphone applications can pay our bills, buy our clothes, manage our family’s schedules, write emails on the go and help us be more organized. Since responsible mothers can never text and drive, there are apps to check off tasks on the to-do-list and dictate emails that convert into text, while you are stuck in traffic! Who has time to shop? Today smartphones can keep track of what is in a mom’s closet and find the pieces she needs to pull an outfit together. There are apps today that allow mothers to catalog what they already own and shop for the items they need. There is also no need to commit anything to memory. Moms can now stay organized and remember the big and small things through saving notes, receipts, audio clips and anything else they need. It is as simple as buying a smartphone and downloading the
specific apps you need to make life easier and more enjoyable. Technology helps our super moms save time and do it all successfully.
Staying fit & healthy: But balancing work with personal and at-home considerations is not easy and thus, working moms can develop a lot of stress through all aspects of their lives. This is why it is so important for moms to have a healthy fitness routine that will help them release their daily stress and stay fit. Moms need to feel good about themselves and manage to workout despite their full-time jobs and their kids’ busy schedules. These smart moms get to feel 20% better mentally and have an overall more positive outlook in life. You only need to set aside 30-60 minutes during the day to stay fit and make your workout a constant in your life. Whether is running, spinning, weight training or a 30-minute walk every day, there are no excuses! Nobody said being a super mom is an easy task, but with a healthy regime and the right tools in hand it can be possible. k

elcome to Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures! You are now part of a 21-year legacy that brings positive oral health messages to children across the world. Bright Smiles, Bright Futures gives teachers, children and families around the world the tools they need to make good oral health a permanent part of their lives. With the focus on prevention, the program builds self-esteem and teaches good oral health practices to create lifelong habits. And most importantly, BSBF inspires kids to take control of their own oral health. Its messages of empowerment enable children to not only understand “what” to do to take care of their teeth and gums, but also the “why” behind the messages. In this way, BSBF equips them to become lifelong Tooth Defenders. Dental Emergency! Different situations call for different actions.
floss. Guide the floss carefully to prevent cutting gums. • If an object can’t be removed at home, see a dentist. • Do not try to remove the object with a sharp or pointed implement.
• For a permanent tooth, gently insert it in its socket. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or cool water. • Immediately go to your dentist. • Don’t forget to take the tooth.
BITTEN LIP OR TONGUE • Give your child some pain relief. • If there is bleeding, apply direct pressure to the area. • Use ice every 10 – 15 minutes to relieve the swelling. • If the bleeding continues, call your dentist or visit a emergency medical practice.
BROKEN TOOTH • Remove the broken tooth or part of the tooth if this can be done easily. • Apply direct pressure to the area with a clean cloth. • To minimize swelling, apply cold pressure on the face in the area of the injured tooth. • Gently clean dirt or debris from the injured area with warm water. • If the tooth is still fixed, cover any sharp edges with a protective device like soft wax, or even chewing gum. • Immediately go to your dentist.
KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH • Apply direct pressure to the bleeding area for about 20 – 30 mins. • If the bleeding still doesn’t stop, call your dentist or visit an emergency medical practice. • If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it under running water. Do not scrub it. • Do not try to insert a baby tooth back in the socket.
Prevention is Key, why is that? Simply because prevention is always more effective than treatment.
TOOTHACHE • Rinse out mouth vigorously with warm water. • Use dental floss to remove any food trapped between teeth. If there’s swelling, apply cold pressure on the outside on the cheek. Do not use heat or place aspirin on aching teeth or gums. • See a dentist as soon as possible. OBJECT WEDGED BETWEEN TEETH • Try to remove objects with dental

Easter Symbols And Traditions
A brief history of the spring holiday’s celebrations WRITTEN BY: Estefania Arosemena
The Easter Bunny: The Easter bunny has become a prominent symbol of Christianity’s most important holiday, the resurrection of Jesus Christ! This is because rabbits are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. Some consider the rabbit a distant cousin of Santa Claus since both deliver toys

and candy to children. It is believed the Easter Bunny arrived in America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Osterhase visited children and left brightly color eggs in nests the children built for him. Easter Eggs: Eggs are also a symbol of fertility and have been linked back to ancient Pagan celebrations, welcoming the arrival of spring. Easter eggs are also said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and his resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century. Eggs back then were a forbidden food during Lent, so they would be decorated and saved until Easter Sunday, when they could be eaten. Easter Parade: The Easter parade tradition, celebrated in New York City, dates back to the mid 1800s when the upper
classes of society would attend Easter services and then walk outside, showing off their new spring outfits and hats. This became a tradition when the average citizens started showing up along Fifth Avenue to check out the action. Easter Parade tradition lives on in Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue from 49th Street to 57th Street, and today other cities across America also have their own parades. Easter Special Dish: Aside from eggs, the most common Easter food would have to be hot cross buns! These date back to the pre-Christian era when small cakes were offered to Easter, the goddess of spring. It is thought they were marked with a cross to signify the four quarters of the moon. But later the cross came to symbolize the crucifixion of Jesus. Traditionally, hot cross buns baked on Good Friday were said to have magic powers! k

Beach Season Quick Tips For Busy moms
T
he best tip we can offer busy moms to prep for beach season is to skip the razor and get waxed. If you shave, you will stimulate the hair’s growth and will need to keep shaving. Waxing removes the hair below the skin level, which lasts from 3-6 weeks. To extend the life of your wax – become a regular. Once your hair growth gets in a routine, you will have to come back less frequently. What happens if I get an ingrown? If you wax regularly you will have a very slim chance of getting an ingrown hair. However, tight clothes, like leggings, stockings and jeans can cause an ingrown hair problem

Happiness on a Plate How to Make a Festival Fruit Platter for Mother’s Day with your Kids WRITTEN BY: Mr. & Mrs. P
Ask any mom what she appreciates most on Mother’s Day and she’ll probably say it’s a homemade gift from her child. Another popular answer is spending quality time with her family. What if she could have both? Spending time with children in the kitchen is not only fun, but also helps them try different foods and make healthier choices in the future. We have a fun and creative idea that is sure to have them forgo the packaged sweets and choose fresh fruits instead. Moms will also benefit from all the nutrients packed into these fabulous treats. With just a few cookie cutters, some healthy ingredients and a bit of creativity, you and your family can also create a beautiful fruit platter together on Mother’s Day. Whether entertaining at home or visiting family, mothers everywhere will embrace this figure-friendly dessert! We wish you all a wonderful Mother’s Day!
INGREDIENTS 1 Pineapple 1 Melon A few Grapes 1 pint of Raspberries 1 pint Strawberries 2 Kiwis 1 cup of Non-fat Greek yogurt 4-5 teaspoons of Honey 1 teaspoon of Vanilla A few Mint leaves A few Chives DIRECTIONS Step 1: Rinse and dry the grapes, raspberries and strawberries. Cut the tops off of the strawberries and slice vertically into thin strips. Slice the grapes and raspberries in half. Step 2: Carefully peel the pineapple. Cut the melon in half and seed it. Slice both fruits horizontally into inch round disks. Place the slices on a paper towel to collect moisture.
Step 3: Here’s where kids can take charge! Using various cookie cutter shapes and sizes, have them cut out flowers, petals and butterflies. Arrange on a clean platter. Combine colors, shapes and sizes to create a unique design like we did. Step 4: Add mint leaves and chives to create leaves and flower stems. This will give the platter a nice finishing touch. Step 5: To make a low-fat dipping sauce for the fruit, combine the yogurt, honey and vanilla in a bowl. Mix well and transfer to a small serving bowl. Enjoy!

Needs Your Help!
T
he Officer Snook Water Pollution Program was created in 1993 by Jennifer Sevin while she was a high school senior in Miami. In 1994, the U.S. Coast Guard adopted the Officer Snook Program as a national education and outreach initiative. Since its inception, the Program has educated over 7 million people across the country. Officer Snook, a cartoon fish, is a symbol of protecting our water environments worldwide. The purpose of the Officer Snook program is to educate children and adults about the causes, effects of and solutions to water pollution. “People need to realize that water pollution is not only unsightly, but it affects the health and safety of many organisms, including people,” says Jennifer Sevin. “In South Florida, much of our economy is directly tied to the health of our local environment,

making it also financially important to prevent pollution.” Officer Snook Program presentations are given in schools and at community events throughout the country. The program also provides opportunities for volunteers to take an active role in supporting the environment through participation in clean ups, invasive species removals, storm drain stenciling programs, and other interactive activities. “There are many ways people can help each and every day,” says Jennifer. “Simple acts can go a long way.” What you can do to HELP OFFICER SNOOK STOP WATER POLLUTION: 1. Clean up a beach, park or schoolyard. 2. Plant native trees; reduce use of pesticides and fertilizers. 3. Recycle products such as used motor oil, plastics and aluminum.
4. Buy products that use recycled material and that have little packaging. 5. Reuse materials as much as possible, such as water bottles. 6. Clean up pet waste and dispose of properly. 7. Find local collection facilities for medicines and chemicals instead of dumping down drain or flushing down toilets. 8. Keep boats and vehicles in good condition to reduce leaks and emissions and improve gas mileage. 9. Conserve water and energy. 10. Support environmentally-friendly businesses and organizations. k For more information, contact the Officer Snook Program at officersnook@aol.com.

Fit4KidsCare Free Interactive Smartphone App WRITTEN BY: Miami Children’s Hospital
5
iami Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the first hospital in the country to launch a smartphone app for Apple iOS devices that uses Wi-Fi triangulation technology to offer patients the convenience of an on campus indoor GPS-like way-finding system, along with other service enhancements. Through the Fit4KidsCare app, families can now connect to MCH’s interactive way-finding campus maps, purchase items from the MCH gift shop, order room service and much more. The app was originally launched

in 2010, initially providing families with ER and Urgent Care wait times, directions to the main hospital and its eight outpatient center locations as well as physician directories. In 2013, the hospital updated its app using mobile-software company Meridian’s software development kits for navigation and indoor positioning. Additionally, the hospital also used Cisco’s 802.11n Wi-Fi network and the Mobility Services Engine for computing location information in real time from hundreds of Wi-Fi access points, exposing them centrally to third party software platforms like Meridian.
“Miami Children’s Hospital is committed to optimizing the patient and family experience. The new app is one of many tools for supporting families in navigating the campus. It supplements a colorful, child-friendly interior way-finding system that uses colors and animal images as visual cues as well as staff commitment to proactive way-finding support,” said Ed Martinez, Chief Information Officer. “In our increasingly technically connected world, the new app adds a new dimension to the process.” Once downloaded, the app’s new, indoor, way-finding feature

Cooking Tips From One Mom To Another
I
f your family is anything like mine, cooking for your husband, cooking for your kids and cooking for your baby can be three different tasks! I have several tips/ recipes from one mom to another to try in the kitchen!
1.- Does your family eat tofu? It super tasty, super healthy and super fast to prepare! And it will save in the fridge! I recommend buying extra firm tofu because, for me, it cooks up better! I sauté tofu in a skillet with olive oil and my favorite seasonings. Cook about 10-15 min for baby but a bit longer for the kids and family. It’s easier for the baby to eat if the tofu is softer, but for more sophisticated palettes, a firmer texture is preferred.
2.- Making pasta for dinner? I do! It’s quick, easy, and cheap! Buy whole wheat pasta; it’s healthier. I used to use regular pasta sauce for the family but no more. I started
buying canned/ stewed or diced tomatoes (no salt added) with basil, garlic, and oregano for the baby. After blending the tomatoes and pasta and sneaking a few bites for myself I thought, “This is really good!” It’s much healthier too! None of the sugar and chemicals you find in canned pasta sauces. You can add ground turkey or pork for a heartier sauce.
3.- Want to avoid hyper, fussy kiddos? It’s all about maintaining normal levels of healthy sugars in their bodies. My family and I eat lowsugar everything. From oatmeal, to fruits for snacks, to condiments, juices and desserts. Eating reducedsugar foods will become a norm and your kids will not suffer from peaks and drops in their sugar intake. Also important, drinking plenty of water with sugary snacks, and even fruit, helps the body digest and filter better. k

Happy Swimmers! Is my kid in the appropriate swimming program? WRITTEN BY: Liz Kershaw
L
iving in South Florida, being in and around water is a way of life for most families. Learning water safety and how to swim are essential skills for our kiddos as well as parents. There are programs in and around Miami that offer swim lessons and other water programs. As a parent you should research which style and format will best fit your swimmer. Liz Kershaw, Head Coach with Hurricane Aquatics, has a few suggestions when looking for the appropriate swim program. Below are four questions to ask or situations to consider when seeking a program that will best fit your needs. 1. Are the instructors background checked and trained? Teaching swimming is a “hands on” activity at the most basic level. The instructor will be in the water holding and moving your child through various drills and skills. Knowing that thorough training and background screening has been done will give you peace of mind that the person

working with your swimmer is a professional. 2. At what age do the different programs start? a. If you are looking for infant lessons, there is a wide range of options from mommy and me classes, which are bonding experiences and provide the opportunity for mom and baby to get comfortable in the water) to ISR (Infant Survival Recourse), which is an intensive survival based program taught in a one-to-one environment with the instructor. b. Between ages 3-6 your swimmer may be ready for a more conventional swim lesson. These are typically between 30-45 minutes in length and are offered anywhere from daily to once per week. The right time to start and what to expect from this type of lesson for your kiddo will depend a lot on gross motor development, attention span and your child’s ability to relax in the water and try new skills.
c. Once your kiddo knows how to swim fairly proficiently, there are other swim class options including stroke schools and recreational teams. In these programs swimmers learn all four competitive strokes, as well as turns and dives. These programs typically start with swimmers 6+ and vary greatly in length and expectations. d. Competitive swim teams will allow swimmers to start somewhere between age 5 and high school; it all depends on the program. 3. Is there a curriculum the instructors follow from lesson to lesson and onto the next level? You want to be able to measure progress and see that your swimmer is improving. The steps may be very small but seeing a drill/skill sheet is always helpful in measuring progress. It also keeps your swimmer motivated and wanting to come back to the pool for more. The drills/skills will often be disguised as games to make it more fun!
4. Does the program offer group, private or semi-private lessons? Depending on your child’s learning style, he/she will benefit more from either a group or individual setting. Some pros and cons to consider include: a. Private lessons - The information is tailored specifically to the needs and progress speed of your swimmer; typically they are the most expensive. b. Semi-private lessons - Some swimmers are encouraged watching their friends do new things and may be more willing to try more in groups. Having swimmers of different skill levels in the same group can distrupt the flow of the lessons. c. Group lessons – A well-run group lesson is fun and swimmers want be with their friends. These are also the least expensive of all the lesson types. Cons include limited individual attention as a set lesson plan needs to be followed daily. Being consistent in any swim program will lead to quicker skill mastery, in-
creased stamina and a safe swimmer. Learning how to swim at any age can be beneficial because it builds selfconfidence and assists in developing a strong work ethic; it takes time to learn, refine and master the various skills. Swimming is also a refreshing exercise during the summer heat and can be a launch pad into all kinds of additional experiences including diving, snorkeling, water polo, and surfing, just to name a few. k For more information about Hurricane Aquatics visit hurricaneaquatics.com or contact 305.248.4713.

Christ Fellowship Backpack Program Committed to combat childhood hunger WRITTEN BY: Christ Fellowship Miami
A
s many churches around the nation are busy preparing for Easter, one local church is trying to do more than just encourage local residents to join them for a traditional Easter service and an egg hunt. “Christ Fellowship is an extremely outward-focused church,” said Senior Pastor Rick Blackwood. “We put a large emphasis on serving the hurting and under resourced in our community.” Recent statistics show that 70% of Miami-Dade students receive the
free public school lunch program. A public school in South Dade told Christ Fellowship church that “students can sometimes be found crying in the hallway because they are hungry or tired.” In the spring of 2013, Christ Fellowship (CF) raised money and started delivering backpacks full of food to feed 450 hungry children every weekend during the school year. More than 300 volunteers from CF participate to make sure that students receive a backpack full of food. As a result of additional donations, the church now deliv-

ers 600 backpacks every weekend. This Easter, CF is looking to raise more funds to support the Backpack Program and feed 1,000 hungry students for the 2014-15 school year. “We are committed to helping these students,” said Missions Pastor Jorge Molina. “We have a heart for Miami, and especially for children.” That love for children has propelled CF to invest resources so that their children’s ministries are top notch! The CF Kids ministry helps young children learn to become more like Jesus in an age-appropriate and engaging manner by using creative elements like live music, puppet shows, skits and more. Middle and
high school students also have an environment tailored just for them called CF Students that provides the opportunity to interact with other teens, features live music by teens, as well as time for small group discussions. Families are invited to celebrate Easter at CF April 16-21 at multiple locations across Miami-Dade. There will be live music, egg hunts, family portraits and a powerful Easter message. If you are interested in making a donation to the backpack program, sponsor a child for an entire school year with one time donation or want to learn more, please visit cfmiami.org/backpacks.
