y First Anniversar Issue! What a year it has been! Over a year ago, taking baby steps, I started working on this amazing project. With the help of two great friends, Estefania Arosemena and Fernando Corrales who believed in and supported me through the development, Kiddos Magazine is celebrating its 1st Anniversary! I
t’s almost that time of the year. Summer memories have been created and it’s time to prepare for a new school year full of new exciting possibilities. The children will go back to school where they will reconnect with old friends and meet new friends. Having a positive disposition as a family plays an important part in this transition. Back to school means many different things to many parents. During this process the parents must prepare as well as the children. Start-

ing school entails an emotional and physical preparation for the family. The emotional transition is different for every child. For some children this will be the first time they start school. The experience of starting school today may help children in the future when it’s time to apply for a new job or going to a college interview. It is a healthy stress to practice. In order to meet the emotional needs of a child we must provide
an opportunity to meet his/her needs for order, exploration, & orientation. Order can be maintained by following a bedtime routine and a morning routine before the first day of school. Laying out uniforms or picking clothing for the next day is not just a good idea but also gives the children external order that helps them build internal order. Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important elements in children’s success in school. Children across all devel-

opmental spectrums react very well to visual aids; creating cards with pictures of the routine helps all children better understand what is expected of them. Children feel safe when they can predict what comes next. Empowering children during their morning routine to get dressed independently, make their beds, and have breakfast is conducive to independence. In Montessori schools, we have a designated area as part of the curriculum
where we support the independence of the children through exercises of care of the self, care of the environment, & grace and courtesy. These exercises with real life activities help ground the children in the reality of life. Visiting the school with your children meets the need for exploration and orientation. The visit can be a few times for about thirty minutes before the first official first day of school. This helps the children orient themselves in the
new environment. Visiting helps create a concrete picture of what school looks like and gets the conversation started. If you are not able to coordinate a visit with the school you can create a booklet with pictures of the school, the teacher, and the children. Back to school can be an exciting time of the year. It is a family process of adaptation and it’s important that the needs of the entire family are met. When you prepare yourself and your child emotionally and physically, you have a better chance of a peaceful beginning. k

Back to School Nutrition Tips to Boost Focus and Performance in School WRITTEN BY: Dr. Trevor Cates
W
hat are you feeding your kids to nourish their brains and help them grow and flourish through the school year? On school days, you might find it even more challenging to encourage your children to eat nutritious foods. So, here are some tips to help ensure your children are nourishing their bodies and their brains. 1. Start your child’s day off strong with a healthy breakfast. During childhood, the body and mind need the consistent provision of good nutrition in order to function optimally. A smoothie with fruit, protein (nuts/ seeds or pea/rice protein powder), coconut milk and even some greens is an easy and effective way to pack in power foods. 2. Pack your child’s lunch with nutrient rich foods. Include foods like fresh veggies and fruit, legumes (hummus, beans, peas), nuts and seeds, organic nitrate-free sandwich meats, and whole grains. Instead a sugary soft drink, select fruit juice with no added sugar or water. 3. Discuss healthy eating with your child and create a game plan together. Allowing them to help with shopping, growing a garden, and preparing their snacks and lunches will support them in making good choices. 4. Have regular family meals. Spending time together at least one meal each day (or as often as possible) sends a great message to your child that nutrition is important. This is
your opportunity to be a super role model for your child and show them how much you enjoy eating nutritious foods too! 5. Enjoy a variety of foods. In my practice, I see many children with food allergies and intolerances. Eating a variety of foods may help reduce the chance of developing food reactions. In addition, eating a variety of foods exposes a child to more possible nutrients and allows her or him to acquire a taste for more foods. 6. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water. While other drinks might be tasty, water provides the best way to keep the body hydrated. Send filtered water to school in reusable BPA-free containers such as stainless steel water bottles. 7. Choose fresh and whole over processed food. While kids are often drawn to processed foods, they contain artificial colors, preservatives, flavor enhancers, and partially hydrogenated oils. Research shows that food additives can create hyperactivity in some children. In addition, certain artificial food colors have been linked to cancer in animal studies. Hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated, and other processed oils contain toxic byproducts and harm cellular membrane function. 8. Limit sugar intake. Sugar and other sweeteners create a peak in blood sugar followed by a crash. This can lead to hyperactivity and/ or fatigue and subsequently affects children’s performance in school.
Excess sugar can also interfere with immune function making it more likely for your child to get sick. Artificial sweeteners are not a better alternative as they have been linked to various health concerns and increase sweet cravings. A nutrient-rich balanced diet supports a child’s ability to focus, have energy and succeed in school. It can also be delicious and enjoyable with the right ingredients and attitude. outh Florida’s poison control center has a warning for families: e-cigarettes pose a risk to kids. Recent news articles have noted the increased popularity of “vaping”, i.e. the use of e-cigarettes, products marketed as a safer alternative to smoking. These electronic devices vaporize concentrated nicotine (and other ingredients) that users inhale through small devices that can resemble cigarettes, a pack of cards, or an ink pen.
and can contain many cigarettes’ worth of nicotine in a bottle that may not be child-resistant. Nicotine overdose can be fatal and several Florida children have visited hospitals with severe vomiting and seizures as a result of sipping the concentrated syrup. The nicotine in cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco has always been hazardous to children - as little as one cigarette can require a trip to the local emergency department.
Poison control centers across the U.S. have seen a marked increase in kids and teens ingesting the “e-liquid” used to refill the devices. These liquids are available with fruity or candy-like flavors
These days there are many products containing nicotine available in pharmacies, online, and through retail outlets. These, include patches, lozenges, gum,
and, of course, the vials or squeeze bottles of concentrated liquid. All of these products are potentially dangerous. Back to School and Cyberbullying Safety Tips to Protect Your Children WRITTEN BY: Miami Children’s Hospital

ullying has been a problem in schools for many years, and with the new integration of technology at home and in the classrooms it has taken on a new form: Cyberbullying. What is cyberbullying? Cyberbullying occurs when children use technology such as cell phones and the Internet, to send hurtful – and sometimes anonymous - messages to other children. Unfortunately, cyberbullies don’t stop there. They can go as far as impersonating your child on a social site such as Facebook or Twitter, and send incriminating messages. i-SAFE America states how 58 percent of children admitted to having experienced some form of cyberbullying. Dr. Sara Rivero-Conil, a psychologist at Miami’s Children’s Hospital’s Division of Psychology states how cyberbullying is a serious concern, “[Bullying] isn’t limited to school anymore. It can essentially happen 24 hours a day, which can make those who are being severely cyberbullied feel like there is no escape.” According to Dr. Rivero-Conil the constant abuse can result in your child suffering from anxiety and/ or depression. In extreme circumstances, children have taken their lives due to cyberbullying. This was

the case for 15-year-old child from Cape Coral, Florida who took his life after being cyberbullied by classmates for two years. Because of his story, new laws were adopted in Florida that would penalize schools
that don’t comply with anti-bullying policies. Although this is an improvement, many children still fall victim to bullying. How can you tell if your child is being cyberbullied? As Dr. Rivero-Conil suggests, keeping the lines of communication open with your child is very important. Make sure to keep an eye on eat-
ing and sleeping habits, as well as grades in school. She says, “If your child arrives from school looking disheveled or missing items that they had taken to school, be sure to check in with him/her. It’s also important to remind your child that the bullying is not his or her fault.” How can you protect your child from cyberbullies? If you see any signs your child may be a victim of cyberbullying, it’s important to talk to him/her. Make sure he or she is not sharing personal information, especially passwords with anyone, even friends. Dr. RiveroConil explains, “It’s also important that they realize the Internet is a very public space, e-mail messages, IM conversations and photos can all be copied, printed and forwarded, so they should be mindful of how they portray themselves online. Keeping the computer in a public place and limiting the time your children spend on non-school-related activities online may also help you be aware of what’s going on in your child’s online world.” Most importantly, added Dr. Rivero-Conil, “If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Encourage your children not to open messages from bullies, and they definitely should not hesitate to block someone’s online profile if they are feeling harassed.”

Dr. Rivero-Conil states, “monitor your child’s online activity and take the opportunity to educate your child on appropriate forms of communication should you see that they are bullying or being mean to another child. Bullying in general is often a way of acting out because of underlying problems,” noted Dr. Rivero-Conil. “If you feel your child may be dealing with feelings of anger, hurt or frustration, having them talk to a professional counselor can often help them learn to cope with these feelings in a healthy manner.” k

But what happens if your child is the bully? The thought of your child being the bully can be very upsetting. Sadly, this may be possible. In a study conducted by iSafe America, 54 percent of children admitted to being mean to someone over the Internet. Although this can definitely be very upsetting, it’s important to teach your children the correct behavior on the Internet, as well as making them understand the power of words, and how damaging they can be.

T
he head louse is a creature that is found worldwide, and infestations occur in individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Children are affected most commonly; lice affect a big number of elementary school students in North America. Direct contact with the head of an infested person is the primary mode of transmission of pediculosis capitis, although the use of hair dryers, combs, or towels could contribute to louse transmission. Lice Symptoms and Treating Lice do not jump, fly, or use pets as vectors. Symptoms like Itching of the scalp, neck, and ears may occur as an allergic reaction to lice saliva, which is injected during feeding. Treatment is with Permethrin, topical ivermectin, malathion, lindane, benzyl alcohol, administered via a single application to dry hair. Potential adverse effects include ocular irritation, dry scalp, and a burning sensation on the skin.
The most common causes of treatment failure are lack of compliance and continued contact with others infested and untreated, although resistance of head lice to topical treatments is becoming a problem in some areas.

Many school districts have rules that forbid the return to school of even adequately treated children with nits in place. Household members should be examined and treated if infested; bedmates should be treated prophylactically. Louse survival off the scalp beyond 48 hours is unlikely. It is reasonable to recommend washing clothing and linen used by the infested person during the two days prior to therapy in hot water and/or drying the items on a high-heat dryer cycle [28]. Chino & Nacho: A Blockbuster Success Musical Inspiration and Advice
Kiddos Magazine introduces for the very first time The Kiddos Kid Reporter segment in which you will find great interviews from famous celebrities and inspirational artists.

o celebrate Venezuelan Heritage Day, Kiddos Magazine accompanied Latin Grammy Awardwinning duo Chino & Nacho at the Marlins Park while they performed their chart-topping smash hits. Showcasing a wide-ranging reggaeton style that is both romantic and tropical, their albums, including hits like “Mi Niña Bonita” and “Tu Angelito,” have been blockbuster successes. Before the start of this spectacular concert that took place on Saturday June 28th, our Kiddos Kid Reporter Marco caught the

duo’s attention at the press conference to give us a sneak peak of musical advice. Check out what we found out: The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Who was your favorite music artist when you were kids and how did he or she inspire you? Nacho: As a kid I got influenced by many musical genres. One time I wanted to be a rock star and wore only black clothes. When I turned 16 years old I loved reggae music and
let my hair grow. I’ve never had one favorite musician in particular, but several ones through the years.

The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What do you think is the ideal age to start a musical hobby?
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What advice would you give to the kids who want to become professional singers when they grow up?
Chino: Well, actually there is no perfect age to start, but it is very important that as kids we begin to play musical instruments to learn a little bit more about the notes, chords and how to read music. If you like it as a boy and have the musical talent, you can later in life easily develop into a great singer.

Nacho: As the question says, a musical hobby can start at any age because it is a “hobby,” but when you want to be a professional musician it is better that you start preparing as a child. Yet, I advise all children to finish their school and attend college first to make sure they receive a good education before thinking on devoting all their time and energy to music.
Nacho: I personally advise kids who have that deep desire in their hearts to study a lot and be the best at what they do. As the one who chooses to be a sweeper wants to be the best sweeper in town, those who’ll like to be musicians must be dedicated and very persistent in accomplishing all of their dreams. “The sky is the limit.” The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Could you describe Chino & Nacho in 3 words? From Ballet Class to Medical School: The Importance of an Arts Education in Your Child’s Life. WRITTEN BY: Kelly Robotham

ow important is an arts education in a child’s life? Ruth Wiesen, director of the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet, states that “the study of an art form, like Ballet, can be a vehicle that transports children through doors that maximize their options in life.” The study of dance, she says, “teaches crucial life skills of discipline, focus, attention to detail, confidence, creativity,

teamwork, and the ability to delay gratification. It’s no coincidence that a disproportionate number of our graduates go to medical school. They have learned from an early age that it can take 10 years of study to begin mastery of a skill or subject.” Although some may regard it as a luxury, studies show that there is a correlation between the study of
an art discipline and achievement, both short and long term. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair, or to win an award for writing an essay or poem, than children who do not participate.

bout Our Programs Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s leading organization dedicated to helping students achieve in school. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life. Founded in 1977, CIS works to unify the existing resources of communities around children, families, and schools. The CIS network operates in 27 states and the District of Columbia, and serves nearly 1.2 million students annually through a federation of 195 independent 501(c)(3) affiliates. Incorporated locally in 1989, CIS of Miami serves approximately 25,000 students a year. What makes CIS of Miami innovative and effective is our evidence-based Integrated Support Services Model that employs both whole school and targeted strategies to impact school

and individual student outcomes. After a rigorous third party research conducted by ICF International, it was determined that the CIS Model is the only nationally proven program to decrease drop-out rates, increase on-time graduation rates, and improve math and reading performance in 4th grade students. The CIS model places a site coordinator to work directly in the school to coordinate and deliver services. Typical services include mentoring, tutoring, counseling, case management, life skills development, job and career readiness, and other needed services provided from partnering social service agencies, businesses, volunteer groups, and CIS of Miami staff. This broad safety net of support forms the basis of our three current programs. These Communities In Schools programs depend on the joint work of staff, partners, and volunteers. This
past year 437 volunteers provided 57,184 hours of service. Thousands of students benefit from its services each year with 95% of elementary students reading at grade level, 98% of elementary and middle school being promoted to the next grade level, and 98% of all CIS students staying in school. The CIS Philosophy: Every Child Needs and Deserves the Five Basics: •One-on-one relationships with caring adults, •Safe places to learn and grow, •A healthy start and healthy future, •Marketable skills to use upon graduation, and •Chances to give back to peers and community. The survey found an average return of investment to society to be 18.4 percent and the benefit/ cost ratio 11.6, which means that
