The aroma of the dish, often cooking for hours, can transport you to a time when life was consumed by skinned knees and hurt feelings, and all could be cured by simply eating your mother’s

food and experiencing her love. Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to take that home-made love in a bowl, and share it with your family. Growing up, Thanksgiving was more than just a meal, it was a week-long preparation that included meal planning, recipe tasting, and crafting. The week culminated in a cooking marathon

where my mother, sister, and I poured all of our love into the comfort foods that had become our Thanksgiving staples. Over the years we fine-tuned our favorite recipes and created traditions that are still a very special part of our family’s Thanksgiving celebration. Now that I am a mother of three, I want to share that same experience with my children and create

our own special holiday traditions. I look forward to spending time in the kitchen with my kids and expressing my love through food by including them in creating our family’s Thanksgiving Feast. Creating a meal as a family gives you the opportunity to bond with your children and create life-long traditions that can be shared with generations to come. Whether this is your first Thanksgiving or your fortieth, including your children in the process will surely become your favorite part of this yearly holiday. • Set a “kid friendly” table that includes crafts made by your children. Crafts can be made in advance and can help build excitement about the upcoming holiday.

• Let children help serve the dishes that they created and watch as they beam in pride.

• Most importantly, keep the “thanks” in Thanksgiving: let older children write what they are thankful for; younger children can create drawings that can be displayed. k

Pediatric Stroke

Stroke in infants and children presents unique challenges to parents, caregivers, and researchers WRITTEN BY: American Stroke Association

hat causes ischemic stroke in children?

Finding the cause of a stroke is vital to providing the right treatment and preventing more injury. Doctors can find a cause in about two-thirds of the cases. A common cause of ischemic strokes is that a blood clot forms in the heart and travels to the brain. This can be caused by congenital heart problems — such as abnormal valves — or infections. In these cases children may need surgery or antibiotics. Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that’s associated with ischemic stroke. In sickle cell disease, the blood cell can’t carry oxygen to the brain, and blood vessels leading to the brain may have narrowed or closed. About 10 percent of children with sickle cell disease suffer a stroke. There is a high risk of repeat strokes, but this can be reduced by blood transfusion. Finally, ischemic strokes can be caused by trauma that injures large arteries and causes a loss of blood flow. For instance, a large artery might be injured when a child has a neck injury. What causes hemorrhagic stroke in children? When a blood vessel on or in the brain ruptures, blood flows into brain areas where it’s not supposed

to go. It may pool in brain tissues, resulting in a blood clot. Also, because the vessel is ruptured, blood isn’t transported where it should go. As a result, the brain is deprived of oxygen, and this may lead to permanent brain injury. Hemorrhagic strokes are most often caused by rupturing or weakened or malformed arteries known as AVMs (arteriovenous malformations). The risk of hemorrhage is higher with certain illnesses such as hemophilia. Will my child get better? Recovery from stroke is different with each child. Prompt medical treatment and rehabilitation therapy can maximize recovery. In general, most younger people will recover more abilities than older people. Children often recover the use of their arms and legs and their ability to speak after a stroke. What are the effects of stroke in children? The effects of stroke in a child are generally the same as in an adult. The most common effects are: • Hemiparesis (weakness on one side of the body), or hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body). • One-sided neglect (unilateral neglect), which causes the stroke survivor to ignore or forget their weaker side and usually occurs when someone has a right brain stroke. • Aphasia (difficulty with speech and language), or dysphagia (trouble swallowing). • Decreased field of vision and

trouble with visual perception. • Loss of emotional control and changes in mood. • Cognitive changes or problems with memory, judgment, and problem-solving. • Behavior changes or personality changes, improper language or actions. k

5 Costume Trends To Help Make This Year’s

Halloween The Best One Yet

Trying to decide on a costume for Halloween is a little like deciding which piece of candy to eat first. WRITTEN BY: Laurel Johnson

here’s nothing like Halloween to bring out the indecisive qualities in all of us. Kids can’t decide between the pirate or the swashbuckler (“They’re not the same thing!”) and it’s all too easy to throw your hands in the air and declare you are done with the ghouls and the creepycrawlies. Halloween is canceled until next year! We’ve all thought it. Not to fear. Here’s a list of the five biggest costume trends of this year compiled by Party City’s Halloween experts to make your decision making a bit easier.

Throwback Comebacks. With brandnew motion picture reboots of the classic 80’s franchises “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Transformers,” kids can now have the Optimus Prime costume of their parents’ wildest childhood dreams. This is also a great opportunity for the whole family to have matching costumes. Cowabunga!

Disney Princesses. Every little girl dreams of growing up and being a princess, and Halloween is the perfect time to experience that dream for real. Sisters Elsa and Anna from the smash hit “Frozen” and little ruler Sophia from “Sophia The First” are great choices for aspiring monarchs. With tons of “Frozen” outfit choices at Party City, it’s easy for her to showcase her own princess style.

Mattel’s Monster High. This collection of monster-movie inspired dolls make great Halloween costumes for tweens that love bold neon colors, black accents, and a little bit of freaky, funky fun. The characters of Monster High are the fashionable descendants of well-known monsters – like Frankie Stein, the daughter of Frankenstein – so these trendy characters fit in perfectly with the spirit of Halloween. My Little Pony. Hasbro’s collection of magical ponies are a great option for kids who want something sparkly, fun, and maybe not too over-the-top. Bright, colorful tutus and leg warmers paired with rainbow hair extensions

and a pair of wings make it easy to transform into characters like Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie.

Marvel Superheroes. With powerhouse movie releases this year “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” it’s never been a better time to inspire kids to be their own heroes. SpiderMan, Iron Man, and Captain America costumes are perfect for a child who wants minimal frills and fuss. ach Halloween, children look forward to dressing up as their favorite character or scary monster and hitting the streets to trick-or-treat. It is one of the most exciting holidays of the year – but it can also be the most dangerous. It is important for parents to take some basic precautions to ensure that their children have a fun and safe night out. The Miami-Dade County Injury Prevention Coalition at Jackson Health System has some suggestions to make sure your Halloween is full of memories, not regrets.

• Make sure your children understand the importance of walking on the sidewalk while trick-or-treating.

• Pick costumes that are bright or reflective, or carry a flashlight or lighted glow stick, which are visible to motorists. Never use candles, as they are fire hazards.

• To prevent falls, avoid wearing

• Never trick-or-treat alone. There is

• If your kids are old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, make sure they carry a cell phone in case they need to call home for any reason.

• Choose neighborhoods with well

• Remind your children to walk from house-to-house and look both ways when crossing the street.

• Make sure children know never to enter a stranger’s home or car to get their treats – no exceptions.

• Inspect all candy carefully. Any candy that is suspicious looking or has an open wrapper should be thrown in the garbage.

• Be careful with hard round candies and jawbreakers, which can be a choking hazard for younger children. Make sure your children know these very important ground rules before heading out for Halloween fun. k

hether you are celebrating or lamenting the start of the school year, you may be looking for new ways to balance homework, meals, activities, and bedtimes. While the return to school can reintroduce helpful routines, it typically is accompanied by increasing demands that place considerable strain on families, who easily can slip into a pattern of conflict where harmony used to reign. The following strategies may help you Catch your Kiddos Being Good - a small step toward increasing compliance, strengthening self-esteem, and restoring family harmony. •Attend to Positive Behaviors: Kiddos love attention, especially from their parents. While it’s easy to catch them breaking rules or ignoring directions, look instead for opportunities to acknowledge your child for direction following, kindness, or helpful behavior.

•Be Strategic: If you have several kiddos, try to catch each one doing something well. Drawing family attention to one child’s positive behaviors is likely to encourage their siblings to join in.

•Special Time: Try setting aside ten minutes each day for your kiddo to choose an activity for you to enjoy together. Minimize questions and directions, follow your child’s lead, and lavish them with attention.

•Shape New Behaviors: Focus on behaviors that may be difficult for your kiddo. When you observe even small steps in the right direction, let them know.

•Family Tootles: Create a family culture where everyone looks for examples of kind and helpful behavior. Encourage your kiddos to “tootle” rather than “tattle” by reporting when their sibling has done something nice. Hang post-it notes to record tootles and celebrate together when you’ve reached a goal.

•Find Your Style: Do you prefer high-fives or fist-bumps? Sing it loud or simple nod? Whatever your style, look for opportunities to shower your kiddos with spoken and silent praise. •Be Specific: While high-fives and smiles go a long way to help kiddos feel good, children don’t always know what exactly they did well, so be explicit. For example, “Great job staying seated and focused on your homework!”

•Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: Although it can be difficult to ignore annoying behaviors, paying attention to (even punishing) kiddos for minor offenses (like whining or clumsiness) may unintentionally increase their frequency.

Instructions 1. Flatten bread slices with rolling pin until very thin. 2. Spread each with 1 tablespoon cream cheese spread. 3. Layer evenly with spinach, green onions, tomato and turkey 4. Press gently on layers to compress slightly. 5. Starting at a long end, roll up bread slice to enclose filling; pinch edge closed. 6. Wrap each roll tightly in plastic wrap; chill 30 minutes. 7. To serve, cut each roll crosswise into 4 slices, forming pinwheels.

This fall Kiddos Magazine had the honor to interview Antonio Cabrera, one of the former official designers of the White House.

ith a long international career, Antonio has become an inspiration for many to believe in the beauty of their dreams and always think with a creative mind. His professional portfolio went straight into the hands of the first lady, Michelle Obama, who trusted his masterful talents in all of her Christmas decorations for the most prominent home in America. Antonio’s fascinating repertoire includes interior design, floral design and over-the-top decorations. As a perfect ambassador of perseverance and hard work, Antonio wants to share his inspiration with our kiddos to always believe in everything they

create. Whether you are working with new or re-used materials, making wonderful creations is always possible. It all came to him from a very young age and the key to his success is to always believe in yourself. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Who was your inspiration to start your professional career? Antonio Cabrera: I believe that my inspiration was my regular life next to my mother and my father… when you spend time with your family and friends, driving to school, going on vacations to the beach, or any other trip, you are able to see the beauty of the trees, the natural beauty of the

ocean, the beauty of the mountains, the mixed flowers and even how beautiful and large the sky is. I learned from the “Simple life” that my parents led, especially from my mother. She was always creating, working and very grateful for the beauty of flowers and plants: A simply blessed life. My inspiration was to create something beautiful with my hands that also looked natural. I was able to practice in my school and from there, I discovered my own natural talents that eventually developed into my professional career. Even now, through the time, I keep admiring the beauty of nature every day.

The Kiddos Kid reporter: What advice would you give to the kids that want to learn more about working with their creativity and hands?

Antonio Cabrera: The best advice: Believe in Yourself! You always have to believe that whatever you create is going to be beautiful because it’s your creation.

The Kiddos Kid reporter: For two consecutive years, Michelle Obama invited you to decorate the White House’s largest space—Can you share with Kiddos Magazine this experience? Antonio Cabrera: For me it is a great honor to share my experience with all the children and Kiddos Magazine. The First Lady, Michelle Obama, is a very nice, professional and humble person, as is everyone inside The White House. Each person was very professional. For me this was a big honor because I was representing all the Latin-American community and the american dream as a professional. I met beautiful people from different states in the country. We had children, teenagers, grandfathers, single and married people. Everyone was very special to me and had a special mission to contribute to The White House. Each one had a great history related to the Unites States. There were people of all different ages. Together, we were able to create beautiful pieces for the Christmas Decorations and the Christmas tree. But I think the most special thing about my experience with The White House was that all the decorations were handmade - created and manufactured by us.

It is always good to experiment with different materials, colors, and textures. And you don’t always have to start with new materials. Recycle and re-use things for your creations. I remember when I was growing up, my parents had little money to buy things, but I was very happy to create and invent new things with recycled materials. The more you can recycle the more creative you will be. Don’t Rush It and Don’t Give Up! Spend the time that you need to finish each and every project.

I believe that at some point, my creativity is what brought me to The White House. I was able to create beautiful new designs by recycling with materials that were already there. The Kiddos Kid reporter: Antonio will teach our Kiddos how to create in 3 steps a project to make at home and decorate this fall season. Antonio Cabrera: Project Name: DÉCOR CARD Seating cards for the Thanksgiving table that can also be a holiday card to give to someone special or to decorate your tree:

1. Use recycling materials from your house related with the school or your home (ex: coins, buttons, flowers, stickers, paper, crayons).

2. Cut the card in any size you want and paste and glue the décor materials creating your piece of art on the front of the card, then with crayons write down the name of the person that will be seating down in the table.

On the wildlife tours you will take a trolley around the 5-acre zoo, making several stops where your tour guide will educate you on the conservation status of the animals seen. Your kids will have the opportunity to share fun interactive activities that include: feeding the camels, full contact with reptiles, birds, primates and other small mammals just to name a few! You can finish the tour with a special private encounter, made by appointment only, to interact with some of the fury baby felines. But the ZWF is not only about interaction with the animals, it is also an educational foundation whose principal mission is to raise public awareness about wildlife, preserving and breeding endangered species, and rescuing others. here’s a tendency in today’s youth athletics to focus on the physical. Children learn at a young age how to train their bodies to compete. What they’re often not prepared for is the mental game, which has proven invaluable not only in achieving athletic success but also in school and at home. Mental strength training creates standout young adults who are prepared for life. That philosophy is the foundation for Human Performance Mentors founder Michael Cooper. The company and its training program, The Missing Playbook TM , trains youth and professional athletes from the neck up. Human Performance Mentors has molded some of the world’s most elite junior tennis, baseball, football, golf, and soccer players over the last 10 years. When is the right time to begin a youth mentoring program? Children are bombarded with beliefs and teachings early in life that can block potential. There is no magic age or number, but the sooner a child understands the mind, the sooner they can obtain the right habits.

How is success measured? HPM is not one-size-fits-all, so goals will vary. The Missing Playbook utilizes six modules to help students understand the importance of character, attitude, relationships and emotions. The “unpacking” of these emotions, coupled with the mapping of purpose, vision, and goals, sets the stage for accomplishment. Parents will notice a more focused child who is improving on the field, at home, and in school.

What are the benefits of youth mentoring? Benefits extend beyond the field. Increased focus, understanding emotions and attitude, and learning the cause of those feelings leads to clarity in life – stronger relationships,

What’s my role as a parent? A parent’s role is crucial; training is sometimes more for them than it is for the child because they have a direct impact on their child’s behavior and attitude. They also need to know when to take a back seat and take guidance from their child’s mentor. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen helicopter parents directly affecting their child’s performance on the field or in school,” Cooper says. “Knowing when to give a little space can mean a world of difference.”

High School Students Rally Healthy Eating with

little imagination and a huge willingness to help their community was all it took for two ninth graders to start their own non-profit project to promote healthy eating. Victoria Cruz and Sofia de la Peña are best friends and Girl Scout Cadettes who are actively involved in their school and community. When they were recently tasked with completing their Girl Scout Silver Award, they decided to turn to one of the most relevant issues kids their age face: childhood obesity. To tackle the issue in a meaningful and effective way, the girls decided to expand Fit Kids Day, an event founded by Sofia three years ago to not only encourage physical fitness, but to educate kids about nutrition as well. They created the V&S Café Booth and offered information and healthy food samples to help educate children and families on the importance of healthy eating. The girls also demonstrated for children how to make easy, nutritious alternatives to junk food. The event was so successful that Fit Kids has permanently added a nutritional component and the students are working to spread their reach even further by bringing Fit Kids

While the girls hope to make an impact on children and children’s view of food, they also hope that it will ultimately have a trickle-down effect so that children will start to help their parents and families make healthier food choices. In recognition of their tremendous community service, Sofia and Victoria were recently selected to represent the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida at the 2014 Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) in Salt Lake City. The GSLI is a triennial conference held during the National Convention that offers girls, ages 14 and older, three days of leadership workshops and activities. This year’s GSLI theme is “Girls Change the World” and will to focus on seven major issues including teen violence, healthy relationships, basic needs, inclusion/diversity, self-image/body image, education, and the status of women. Participants will be challenged to develop a plan to take on one of these issues within their very own communities. If the development of Fit Kids Day is any indication, it seems that Sofia and Victoria will have much to offer at this

year’s GSLI event and to the South Florida community. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next! The Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) is a triennial conference that provides girls 14 and older with three days of leadership skill-building activities tied to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). On Saturday, September 6th, families and friends joined together at Ta-Da! Kidz Fitness Boutique at The Falls area to celebrate one year of this magazine’s amazing accomplishments and ability to communicate, impress, and inform parents and their kiddos. Publisher and owner of Kiddos Magazine, Veronica Lepere, had a vision for this publication several years ago and has now brought families many stories about the Miami community as well as trends in education, art, health, and entertainment – all in this spirited, remarkable year.
