S

ummer is a time for playground fun, camping, boating, swimming, biking and other outdoor activities. Longer days mean more time outside and more physical activity, which translate to increased potential for injuries. Playground falls, lawnmower accidents, campfire and fire pit burns are some common childhood injuries that can happen during summer months. “Sustaining a serious injury can be a life-altering event for a child,” said Chris Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children®. “We see patients every day with injuries caused by accidents and we are committed to raising awareness about how to stay safe.” These tips from Shriners Hospitals for Children can help your family enjoy a fun, injury-free summer. Go Outside and Play Outdoor play provides physical and mental health benefits, including opportunities for exercise, creative expression, stress reduction and access to a free and natural source of vitamin D – sunlight. Before sending kids out to play, make sure

8

kiddos | June • July 2017

they are wearing shoes to protect their feet from cuts, scrapes and splinters, and wearing sunscreen to protect against sunburns and harmful ultraviolet rays. Playground 101 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger every year for playground-

related injuries. Before your kids head to the playground, keep these precautions in mind:

Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age and offer shock-absorbing surfaces.

Teach children that pushing and shoving on the playground can result in accidents and injuries.

Remind kids to go down the slide one at a time and to wait until the slide is completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always sit facing forward with their legs straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst.

Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage them to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings.

Fun on the Water Boating, tubing and other water sports can be great fun but can also be dangerous. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly 71 percent of all boating fatalities are drownings, 85 percent of which are a result of not wearing a life jacket. Here is what you can do to enjoy the water safely:

Make a Safe Splash While playing poolside may be a blast, Safe Kids Worldwide reports that drowning is the leading cause of injuryrelated deaths for children ages 1-4 and the third-leading cause of injuryrelated deaths among those under 19. Additionally, the University of Michigan Health Systems estimate that about 6,000 kids under the age of 14 are hospitalized because of diving injuries each year, with 1 in 5 sustaining a spinal cord injury.

Fire Safety Simplified According to the CDC, more than 300 children ages 19 and under are treated in emergency rooms for fire- and burnrelated injuries each day. Use these tips to help keep children safe around fires, fireworks, grills and other heat sources:

Always have children wear a Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports.

Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit of placing these items out of the reach of young children.

Educate yourself. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 86 percent of boating accident deaths involve boaters who have not completed a safety course.

Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby whenever there is an open flame.

Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if he or she is injured in a fire or by fireworks.

Leave fireworks to the professionals. k

Always check water conditions and forecasts before going out on the water.

Prevent accidents and injuries with these tips to ensure your family’s safety around water:

Instruct children to never swim alone or go near water without an adult present.

Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or near any body of water.

Always jump in feet first to check the depth before diving into any body of water.

Never dive in the shallow end of the pool or into above-ground pools.

This Summer Just Move! How to Live a Healthy Lifestyle WRITTEN BY: Cary Sochin

We’ve all heard it before…that phrase ‘healthy lifestyle’ has been bandied about for years, but what exactly does it mean and how do we achieve it? fried foods, or maybe just simply say no to seconds!

• Enhances self-esteem • Improves memory in aging

There are numerous things you and your family can do to create a healthier lifestyle, but rule #1 is always JUST MOVE! And truthfully, that doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym, exercise is movement.

• Reduces stress

populations

Here’s why you need to move more:

E

veryone knows the obvious traits displayed by someone who takes care of themselves and is considered “healthy”. He or she doesn’t smoke, they maintain a stable weight, they eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and fiber and, of course, they exercise on a regular basis. Alas, there are also additional variables involved. A healthy person tends to manage their stress better, seemingly always gets a good night’s sleep, doesn’t overindulge or doesn’t drink too much, they’re active…basically, a healthy person adheres to the old adage… everything in moderation. It seems like a heavy burden having to juggle and maintain all those variables in our hustle bustle world; but the good news is, you don’t have to make drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes almost always lead to failure. The real secret is to implement small changes – take the stairs, add fruit to your cereal, have an extra glass of water, skip dessert, avoid

10

kiddos | June • July 2017

Whether it’s a family bike ride or running a 10k, activity is considered exercise and when you move more than normal, it counts. It’s terrific if you can spend time in the gym - meaning you’re in there sweating, you’re in the “zone” reaching your target heart rate, and/or doing something that strengthens your body. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. Moderate physical activities such as gardening, washing the car, walking the dog, or even just playing outside with the kids can make a real difference.

So isn’t it time you and your family got off that couch, you pushed yourself away from your desk, grabbed the remote and shut off the TV, or logged off Facebook or Instagram? Truthfully, even if you opt for small incremental changes and focus on being healthy to start, you will experience some pretty significant health benefits. k

The benefits of moving more The great thing about moving is that just a few minutes a day can have lasting benefits, many of which you may not even be aware of. Just some of the benefits include:

• Reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes

• Improves joint stability • Increases and improves range of motion • Helps maintain flexibility as you age • Maintains bone mass • Prevents osteoporosis and fractures • Improves mood and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression

dentistry

Six Questions Kids Ask About Teeth Assure A Smile Holistic Dentistry

H

ow often should I see the dentist for regular checkups and cleaning? At Assure A Smile, we recommend children begin seeing a dentist as early as age three, or as soon as they are comfortable chatting with a dentist. We also believe that an annual checkup and teeth cleaning two times per year are good ideas, even for kids. What size toothbrush should I use? There are several sizes of toothbrushes on the market, including brushes for infants, toddlers and older children. Choose a brush size that is comfortable to use, and which allows you to reach all of your teeth. Parents should help younger children brush their teeth until they are old enough to brush on their own. Make sure your toothbrush has soft bristles. It is not important how “hard” your brush, but rather how long you brush – for at last two minutes, twice per day. How often should I brush my teeth? Brushing two times per day is a best. This will help clean away extra food particles and bacteria, which can lead to plaque, tooth decay and cavities. If you cannot brush your teeth on your own, ask your parents to help you. Is fluoride safe? At Assure A Smile, we promote clean living and clean eating. This includes avoiding unnecessary chemicals which may be unhealthy or unsafe. We believe that fluoride contains toxins which may cause problems in children and adults, and we do not recommend its use. Instead, we promote healthy living, exercise, healthy eating including whole foods, fruits and vegetables, holistic life

choices, regular brushing and flossing, and regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings. For brushing, we recommend a natural, fluoride-free toothpaste. You can even make your own. Just combine 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda with cup of coconut oil. (Optionally, you can add a little peppermint oil or stevia.)

Ask Dr. Ted

As a holistic dentistry, Assure A Smile is dedicated to nutritional education for better oral health and total body wellness.

Is chewing gum a good idea? Sadly, it is not. Sugary chewing gum can be bad for your dental health because the sugar can lead to tooth decay. Sugar-free gum lacks the sugar, but it usually contains other chemicals (or even plastic). Some of these chemicals may be bad for you. At Assure A Smile, we recommend avoiding overly processed foods and chemicals when possible. What should you do if you just can’t stay away from chewing gum? Consider a natural alternative. There are some newer brands of chewing gum on the market which contain natural ingredients and fewer chemicals. Or simply choose nuts, carrots, parsley, licorice root or ginger to chew on. What foods keep my mouth clean and safe? The best foods are healthy foods. We recommend a balanced, nutritious diet – including fresh fruits and vegetables. Stay away from candy or cookies, except as an occasional treat. Added sugar in your diet increases your chances for cavities. Avoid chemicals or processed foods. Drink water or other non-sugary drinks. Healthy snacks include whole foods, fruits and vegetables, like apples, carrots, nuts, bananas, oranges, grapes, celery, tomato and cucumber slices. Have you ever tried kale chips? Yummy! k

Dad’s Day, Dad’s Way Gift ideas sure to bring a smile

F

inding the perfect gift for dear ol’ dad may be easier than you think. Show that you’ve paid attention all these years and know what it takes to make him smile. From gifts that make practical tasks easier to accessories for his favorite pleasure pursuits, these ideas take the stress out of showing your dad how much he means. Add a simple “thank you” and a big hug, and he’s sure to feel the love this Father’s Day. Celebrate his sports obsession No matter his favorite sport or team, you can find countless ways to please an avid sports fan. Obvious options like T-shirts and baseball caps are always winners, but you can find plenty of creative and useful ways to celebrate dad’s favorite team, too. Practical ideas to help trick out his car include new floor mats, headrest covers and even valve stem covers. You could also go more whimsical with stainless steel knives or salt and pepper shakers bearing the team logo. Visit the team store or search online for the perfect gift. Boost his golf game Help dad improve his score and complete rounds faster with the advanced technology of a rangefinder. An option such as one of Leupold’s GX-1i3, GX-2i3 and GX5i3 rangefinders provide fast, easy and accurate ranging to give golfers an edge on the course. With the customization features of the GX2i3 and GX-5i3, you’ll practically be gifting dad a personal caddie. Learn more at leupold.com/golf.

kiddos | June • July 2017

Feed his cravings For the at-home chef, functional gift ideas are nearly endless. Try narrowing down the options by choosing his favorite cuisine. If Mexican cuisine is his thing, look for less common but highly useful items like taco holders or condiment dishes to hold a serving of freshly made salsa. Or go a more experimental route with a custom kit that lets dad make his own beer, cheese or jerky at home. An online search will reveal a stockpile of ideas, so your biggest challenge will be narrowing down the menu. Add a tool to his belt If your dad is a handy man, you may think he’s got every tool and gadget imaginable. The truth is, most handymen will agree you can never have too many tools. Think about the projects he tackles most often; those are the items that may be

worn and in need of replacing. If there’s a task he struggles to complete, consult with an expert at your local hardware store to determine whether there are devices that could help make it easier. Expand his artistic interests When the arts are more up dad’s alley, you can make it easier for him to appreciate the genre he loves best. A reading lamp or monogrammed bookmark is perfect for the book worm, while a visit to a gallery showing or performance may be just the ticket for a dad who enjoys exploring artistic talent or experiencing the arts live. Father’s Day is a time to show dad your gratitude and love, and he’s sure to appreciate knowing that you care enough to give a gift he truly can use and enjoy. k

MINDFUL FUN: 5 Ways to Teach Kids Mindfulness that your Whole Family will Enjoy WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

M

indfulness practices are growing in society, organizations and schools and there is just no wonder why: research is stacking up that the benefits are profound and there are no “adverse side effects.” Mindfulness has been shown to improve the mental, emotional, physical and social health and wellbeing of the children that practice it. Some more specific benefits include: improved ability to focus, improve memory, reduction in stress, anxiety and reactivity, better behavior and emotional management, increased self esteem, quicker to calm down and relax when upset, and increased empathy. In schools, bullying was seen taking a decline after mindfulness was introduced. While many are still unaware of what mindfulness is and how to include it in their daily lives, there are some really fun and simple ways to both explain what it is and introduce this into your home life, that can strengthen your bond and the quality time your family spends together. What comes to mind…? To explain what mindfulness is to your children, play a game! Name some words and have your children rattle off what comes to their mind first after hearing the word. For example, start with something silly or simple. Next, ask them what comes to mind when they hear the word Mindfulness. After they respond, explain to them that mindfulness is noticing what is happening right now. It is paying attention to how your body feels,

16

kiddos | June • July 2017

what you see, smell, taste, feel and touch. And it is noticing what the mind is doing. It’s sort of like being a Detective! Hand out some magnifying glasses as props if you feel it’ll add some fun to the game(s)! The magic bell. Ring a bell and ask your kids to silently listen to the sound. Can they hear the vibration of the bell after it is rung? Ring it, again, and ask them to follow the noise and vibration until the end and raise their hand when they no longer hear any noises. This exercise will help your kids to pay close attention to the present moment and utilize their sensitivities and perception in a new way. Visiting aliens. Ask your kids to dress up or act like an Alien for this next exercise and watch how much fun you can all have together! Bring out something otherwise-normal like a piece of orange or a raisin, and tell your kids they have come to Planet Earth and must investigate what this “thing” is. Tell them to pretend they have never seen this before, and ask them to use all of their senses to figure out what it is. Have them look, touch, listen to, smell and taste the food and find words to describe the experience. What do they notice about the sensations of eating this? This practice can lead to healthier eating habits, an awareness of our body’s messages and signals of being full, and an overall appreciation of the food we consume daily.

“Mindfulness has been shown to improve mental, emotional, physical and social health”

Balancing buddy. Take out your child’s favorite stuffed animal or toy, and have them lie down and place it on their belly. Ask them to remain silent, close their eyes and breathe slowly, paying attention to how their buddy is bouncing up and down with their belly and breath. If they

get distracted, have them think of their thoughts as clouds that pass by in the sky, and to bring their attention back to their buddy. This is a powerful practice to help children become aware of their body, their thoughts and how to redirect their focus back into the present moment when perhaps they are having troubling or upsetting thoughts nagging them. Touch-and-tell. Blindfold your children or have them close their eyes. Hand them an assortment of objects, one by one, and ask them to describe what they feel and try to guess what it is. You can use cotton balls, feathers, a rubber ball, a rock, play-doh or clay… the list is endless! This fun and simple exercise teaches children to isolate their senses and tune into their momentary experiences. There are so many ways to practice mindfulness in a fun way together; these are just 5 examples that your family can begin with. Practice these exercises with your children to help them build tremendous strength of mind, body and spirit, and set them up to become a Mindful, happy, aware - and fun - adult. k

Cool Down with Patriotic Frozen Pops The perfect treat to celebrate and escape the heat this summer

With backyard barbecues, pool parties and patriotic celebrations in full swing leading up to the Fourth of July, kids are constantly on the go with summertime activities. For long summer days in the sun, a cool treat is the perfect way to help keep kids energized for all of their summertime activities.

Red, White and Blueberry Frozen Pops Servings: 10

• 1/2 cup granola • 2 teaspoons brown rice syrup • 3/4 cup reduced fat milk • 6 ounces fat free vanilla Greek yogurt • 1 cup whole strawberries, tops removed

• Water • 1 1/4 cup blueberries, divided

20

kiddos | June • July 2017

In small bowl, stir granola and brown rice syrup until combined. Using end of wooden spoon, press approximately 3/4 tablespoon granola into each frozen pop mold. Granola should be packed tightly into bottom of molds.

Layer 1 tablespoon strawberry puree on top of frozen yogurt layer in each mold. Cover top of molds with foil, insert sticks and freeze again until solid. Remove foil, add another layer of yogurt and freeze again.

In another small bowl, stir together milk and yogurt; set aside.

For final layer, add 1 tablespoon blueberry puree and 3 blueberries to each mold. Freeze until solid. Keep frozen pops in molds until ready to eat. Run each mold under lukewarm water for approximately 10 seconds to loosen and remove frozen pops. Pops can be made 1 day in advance. k

Using small food processor or highpowered blender, puree strawberries until smooth. Stir water into each puree so they are pourable, about 2 tablespoons each, more if necessary. Set aside 30 blueberries and puree remainder. Add water, as needed, to make pourable. To layer pops, start by pouring, piping or syringing 1 tablespoon milk and yogurt mixture into each mold, covering granola layer. Put each mold in freezer until firm, at least 1 hour.

Tip: For clean lines between frozen yogurt layers, use small syringe.

10 Steps to Prep Your Pet for Travel This Summer Prepare your pet. Once you’ve made sure your pet is ready to hit the road, start out with short drives to make sure he or she is comfortable in the car. Take a trip around the neighborhood or about town to check his or her reaction and attitude. Plan accordingly. Since not all hotels and accommodations are pet-friendly, be sure to double-check that your reservations allow furry guests. Additionally, make sure that all of your planned activities and adventures can safely involve your pet.

W

hen summer comes around, a common favorite tradition is jumping in the car and hitting the open road for a vacation, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a longer excursion. For pet parents, that exhilarating idea isn’t always so simple. Instead of being forced to leave your furry friend behind, follow these tips and suggestions to bring your fourlegged companion along for the ride. Get checked out. Before loading up the car, consider a check-up with a veterinarian to ensure that your pet is physically capable of handling a road trip. Long hours in the car can be taxing on older pets that may not be used to the stress of travel.

Pack necessary supplies. While you’ll likely be concerned with packing the right clothes, shoes and accessories, your four-legged companion has needs as well. Make sure to bring along proper food, water and respective bowls; toys for down time; treats for good behavior and any other necessities to help your pet feel at home. Travel safely. Even pets that have spent ample time traveling in the past can feel more comfortable in the car while inside a cozy carrier. It can be a good idea to bring along a breathable carrier with plenty of space to help serve as a calming presence in case travel time starts to take its toll.

your pet will need some time to stretch his or her legs, too. Prior to taking off, look for parks or other pet-friendly areas on your route to incorporate some playtime. Stay inside the vehicle. The iconic image of a pet-friendly road trip is a dog with his head out the window and the wind in his face – however, it’s not a safe way to travel. Make sure your pet is safely inside the vehicle at all times. Make frequent stops. Even if you can “hold it” for lengthy periods, your pet will likely require more frequent bathroom breaks while on the road. Mapping out pet-accessible stops can help you keep your pet comfortable while still making good time. Don’t leave your pet. It’s never smart to leave pets or children in locked cars, and it’s an even bigger no-no if you’re in an unfamiliar place. Your pet is likely to be on high alert anyway due to the stress of traveling, so keeping him or her by your side throughout the trip. With these steps, you can hit the road for some summer fun without having to leave your pet behind. k

Take proper ID. It’s important to always have your pet’s ID on its collar, but it can be even more important while out of town when your pet is in an unfamiliar area. Plan for play. You’re sure to have plenty of activities planned during vacation, but keep in mind that

serving some 25,000 children at hundreds of sites each year, The Children’s Trust is dedicated to helping parents and caregivers make informed decisions as to where their children will spend their time on break, as well as offer a host of options to consider. Indeed, 35 percent of The Trust’s entire current annual budget goes toward programs for school-age children and youth. “This app has become the go-to resource for busy Miami-Dade County families searching for safe, affordable and engaging programs that support continued academic development,” says Trust President and CEO James R. Haj. “Without them, kids can lose up to two months’ of their math and reading

skills over the summer break. We’re committed to making sure that doesn’t happen to any child in our community. k Users may choose to read them in English, Spanish or Haitian Creole.
