I embrace motherhood and am passionate about my work at the same time; balance is the key.

The best part of being a Mother is knowing that you have the ability to make a difference in the lives of the children of this world. Watching my girls interact together, bond and blossom into their own unique way of being is a blessing like no other. What has been your most challenging Mom moment so far? The most challenging part of being a mother is trying to be everything I can be for them, as only one person. It's also difficult to want to give them everything, yet knowing that sometimes they will suffer or experience pain or sadness which is part of life. It's never easy knowing how to handle the "tough subjects" or things that come up as the kids get older. How do you feel about being a working mom? I designed my schedule around my children and work part time to be able to be there for them and with them as much as possible. But there are definitely days that I wish I could just spend with them, not worried about what project needs to get done, or when I will be able to get to work. Although I love working, I would love to be there with them all the time. What is a must-have children’s item in your purse? Pens, paper, chapstick and lollipops :) And definitely snacks!
Michelle Barreneche Kids: Mia (9) Profession: Owner & Lead Photographer of Simply Chic Photography, LLC What is the best part of being a Mom? The best part of being a mom is teaching your kids everything you know so they can do it better! What has been your most challenging Mom moment so far? I would say not having enough time to do every activity & juggling work. Being present in my daughters life is very important to me. I like to help her with her school work and go to her soccer games or take her to tennis practice. Kids now have so much going on that there is never enough time to do it all! How do you feel about being a working mom? I think all working moms can agree that we are superheroes! Everyday is a juggling act between who is picking up your kids from school or how they are getting to their house. Somehow we accomplish the impossible in a short amount of time! Being a business owner I’m practically on call 24 hours a day, but this past year I started to set some boundaries. When Mia gets home from school I give her 100% of my attention while she is doing her homework. Another important thing we do is eat dinner as a family when possible with no cellphones.

Kids: Christopher (6), Chase (3), Mila (6 weeks) Profession: Director of Marketing & Business Development at Dadeland Mall, a Simon mall. What is the best part of being a Mom? I spend my life staring at my kids bc I’m just in awe of what I’ve created. They are so funny, so entertaining and no matter what stress the day brings you just look at your kids, hear them speak, or give them a hug and all is well with the world. What has been your most challenging Mom moment so far? Moving to San Diego for a job opportunity - I had a 4 month old and 4 year old at the time and it was a big risk moving to a new city but I decided to go for it bc it was my dream to live in California and in order to be a good mom you have to be a happy mom first. Turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life and an amazing bonding experience for our family. How do you feel about being a working mom? It’s a careful balancing act managing family and work life, especially in the shopping center industry working a lot of weekends and holidays, but I’m grateful to have a solid support system (my husband, in-laws and my family) because I could not do it without them. As women we are built to be resilient and handle anything that comes our way, especially if you love what you do, you figure it all out and make it work. What is a must-have children’s item in your purse? Honest hand sanitizer spray! I try not to be super paranoid about germs but they just insist on touching everything and putting everything in their mouths so it’s a must!

Exploring How Sleep Affects Emotions For Teens SOURCE: FIU Center for Children and Families
Researchers investigate sleep’s role in emotional experiences for teens the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, sleeping the recommended number of hours is associated with better attention, learning and memory; better regulation of behaviors and emotion; and higher quality of life, mental and physical health. Tips for healthy teen sleep include:
• Stick to a sleep schedule—even on weekends.
• Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual about 30 minutes before bedtime, such as reading a book or taking a warm shower.
R
esearchers at the FIU Center for Children and Families are trying to uncover the role that sleep plays in processing emotional experiences, to improve treatments for youth with anxiety. The Emotional Memory Unification (EMU) study, led by FIU psychologist and Associate Professor Dana McMakin, and FIU neuroscientist and Assistant Professor Aaron Mattfeld, is the result of a $3.6 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in collaboration with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The five-year study, co-led by Department of Psychology Chairman Jeremy Pettit, seeks to recruit 260 children ages 10-13. Participants will be part of the study for two to four weeks and will complete computer tasks and games while in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner; wear a wristwatch to monitor their sleep and daily activity, and potentially spend a night at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Sleep Lab.

• Exercise regularly but avoid it within a few hours of bedtime. “We know that sleep is essential for healthy brain development in adolescence, and not getting enough sleep can be very hard on teens’ emotional and physical health,” McMakin said. “Anxiety and lack of sleep among youth is very common, and this study will help us better understand how they are related so we can improve treatments for youth.” According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 70 percent of U.S. teens aged 12-14 get insufficient sleep and 90 percent of youth that experience anxiety report that they also have sleep-related problems. Adolescents’ biological sleep patterns— including sleeping and waking—are shifted later, yet many school schedules start early in the morning. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hours of sleep for children 6-13 years old and 8-10 hours of sleep for 14-17-year-olds. According to
• Make your bedroom comfortable by setting the ideal temperature, sound, and light. Avoid bright environments during bedtime, loud sounds that may affect your sleep, or a room that is either too cold or too hot.
• Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillow.
• Avoid caffeine after 3 p.m. • Avoid electronics and other activities an hour before bed, such as homework, watching TV or playing video games. Focus your bedtime on trying to sleep, not on other activities.
• Keep naps brief (20-30 minutes) and no later than 4 p.m. k If you would like to learn more about the EMU study or find out if your child is eligible to participate, please call 305.348.5384 or emailemu-study@fiu.edu.

Three Ways Parenting A Child With Autism Made Me A Better Mom
W
hen my one-year-old daughter, Lizzie, began to lose language, line up toys, and stopped responding to her name, I did what any good mom would do, blamed myself. I was spending too much time focused on my oldest, we were too busy with activities, and I only breastfed for six months were a few thoughts that plagued me.
two boys. She needed to jump and flap her arms to calm herself when she was over-stimulated. She wasn’t capable of sitting still or being quiet. When I didn’t correct her behavior in public, this brought on unpleasant comments and stares. I learned to let go of the judgment of others and only respond in ways that helped my daughter grow.
I missed the connection I once had with my daughter. Despite the mommy-andme classes and dedicated one-on-one time I added, she grew more distant. The diagnosis was clear: autism.
By Focusing on the Future, I was Missing the Most Important Moments. It’s so easy to get caught up in the destination of the next step. We just need to get past “this,” or we will be happier “when.” We often fail to realize that once we reach the next step, there will always be another and another. Before we know it, we have missed our children’s entire childhood by only looking into the future. The joy of parenting is in celebrating all the little moments along the way. k
Lizzie had no understanding of how the world worked, so she did not behave in a way that was socially acceptable. It became difficult to leave the house, and we were forced to reevaluate our motivation behind our fast-paced family life. We faced hard truths that enabled us to live differently. Here are three ways parenting a child with autism made me a better mom: My Plan is Not My Child’s Best Life. I would never have chosen this diagnosis for my child. Child Safety: Summer Safety Tips For Toddlers SOURCE: Bright Horizons
Toddlers are natural explorers, a trait that makes them delightful companions—if you can keep them safe, that is. From fireworks to swimming pools, summer seems especially fraught with potential peril. Keeping your toddler from harm can seem like a full-time job.
W
e can’t predict or eliminate every potential child safety risk, nor would we want to. We know that allowing children to explore and take some risks is necessary for them to develop resilience and independence. Safety Tips for Summer Water Safety Whether you’re at a lake, the neighborhood pool, or simply running through the sprinklers in the backyard, few things say summer like water play. But toddlers and water can be a deadly mix. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Following a few important water safety tips can make the difference in keeping your child safe. Always stay within an arm’s reach of young children in pools and lakes. At parties and gatherings,
be sure to communicate clearly about who will be responsible for watching the children. Be aware of small bodies of water near you, such as irrigation ditches, creeks, backyard water features, and even buckets. Young children can drown in just a few inches of water. Don’t rely on water wings or inflatable toys to keep your child safe in the water. Eliminate distractions like cell phones or reading a book while you’re watching your child. Some parents, especially those with more than one child, opt to visit splash pads rather than pools while their children are very young. And finally, consider enrolling your child in swimming lessons. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently revised its recommendation on swimming lessons for young children, stating that while swimming lessons do not replace adult supervision, they may add an extra layer of safety.
Car Safety Traffic-related injuries are the second leading cause of death for toddlers, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Accident rates often peak in the summer when families hit the road for vacations. The first step to kid safety on the road is making sure your toddler is properly restrained in a car seat each and every time you turn on the ignition. Do not leave children unattended in the car, even for a minute. Be aware of your surroundings as you enter and exit the car with your child to avoid accidental injuries involving another car. Fire Safety Imagine the world through your toddler’s eyes. At that height, he or she is especially vulnerable to burns from the oven, stove top, fireplace, fire pit, and barbecue grill. Be sure to turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Keep your toddler at a safe

distance from ovens, grills, and fire pits. Be especially cautious with fireworks. Do not let toddlers handle or hold fireworks, including sparklers. Make sure your toddler is wearing shoes to avoid burns from hot embers on the ground and be sure to dispose of all spent fireworks immediately. Keep lighters and matches out of your child’s reach. Playground and Bicycle Safety Safety Skinned knees and elbows are hallmarks of childhood, but taking kid safety precautions can help avoid more serious injuries - especially head and neck injuries. Always supervise toddlers carefully on playground equipment and make sure the playground is covered with several inches of a soft, shock-absorbent material, such as gravel, wood chips, or rubber mulch. Children should wear helmets and footwear when riding on tricycles and scooters.

Answer: 1-6, 2-4, 3-5.
Remember, even the most conscientious parent can’t prevent every spill or bump, but close supervision is still the best way to reduce the risk of serious accidents. Make sure that every adult who cares for your child understands and adheres to basic safety rules, especially these summer safety tips. Keep emergency numbers close at hand and your first aid kit stocked. Now you’re ready to enjoy the summer with your young child! k

How To Go Green Every Day As A Family
any families strive to inspire and nurture in children a sense of stewardship for the planet. There are many Earth Day activities for families to try, but foremost, we want to teach children to respect all living things, to care for the natural resources upon which our existence depends, and to appreciate nature. Early childhood is a good time for children to develop a sense of appreciation for the planet and all it has to offer. Thus it's important to begin developing sustainable habits, such as protecting the environment and conserving our resources, early in life. How to teach kids to go green The first step in helping kids to go green is to help them develop a deep love for our earth. Children are more likely to want to take care of the natural world if they have a connection to it. To raise earthfriendly kids, some families take nature walks, hike in the mountains, walk in the woods, or explore rivers, bays, or oceans. Other families walk around their neighborhoods to enjoy the natural life, pick up litter in community areas, work in a garden, plant seeds in pots, look at foliage and flowers, or use digital cameras to photograph insects. Regardless of whether you live in a city or on a farm, nature surrounds you when you open your doors.
Secondly, families can raise environmental awareness and help children develop green habits by making the Three R’s (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) part of their family culture. We are our children’s most important role models. By going green as a family and practicing the Three R’s, we not only make a profound impact on conserving the world’s resources, but we help children develop lifelong dispositions to earthfriendly behaviors. Below are a few suggestions to go green by reducing, reusing & recycling: • Reduce: Even our youngest children can be taught to turn off lights, turn off the faucet while brushing teeth, or draw on two sides of a sheet of paper. Some families reduce their gasoline consumption by walking, carpooling, bike riding, or using public transportation. • Reuse: Whenever possible, use items that can be reused, rather than disposed of. Consider using cloth napkins instead of paper, lunch boxes instead of disposable sacks, and put food in washable containers rather than plastic bags. Some families wrap gifts
in reused fabric or their kid’s artwork rather than buying wrapping paper. • Recycle: In most communities, recyclable paper and plastic can be sorted and sent to recycling centers or curbside recycling can be used. Families can also recycle toys, clothes, and other items by passing them on to friends or donating them to charitable organizations. The wonderful projects brought home from child care or school can be recycled as gifts to appreciative relatives. Food scraps can be composted and recycled back to the earth. There are many shades of green and no single correct way to go green as a family to raise socially and environmentally aware children. Being a green family means different things to different families, so decide what works and feels right for your family. Every small step helps your child develop lifelong habits while making an important, positive impact on the earth. k
