Keeping Summer Fun! Family Bonding Activities to Keep Children Learning All Summer Long WRITTEN BY: Reading is Fundamental

ummer is here and that means it’s time for baseball games, barbecues, camping trips, and vacations. The summertime provides an opportunity for parents to slow down and spend quality time with their kids. There are many easy, fun, and affordable summer activity ideas for after work or on weekends that will create special family bonding moments. However, it’s also a time for continued learning, whether you’re staying at home or out on the go exploring your community and beyond. During the summer vacation, it is important that children continue to keep their minds and bodies active. Research shows that children who don’t read over the summer risk losing up to three months of important skills they obtained during the school year. Whether families are planning a staycation or a vacation to a far away destination, reading and sharing stories together is easier than ever. Always have a book, mobile phone or tablet handy and use these activities to help your children thrive during the summer months. With a little time and creativity, parents can play an

• Plan a backyard camping trip for friends. List all the things you will need to survive the night outside, including a flashlight to read scary stories.
• Plan a picnic lunch at the park. Children can help make summer salads, wash vegetables, measure and mix ingredients, and help pack.
• Visit the library and check out books about local birds or insects. Go on an adventure walk to see which ones you can find in your neighborhood.
• Walk around your neighborhood and look at the houses. Draw pictures of your favorites and make up stories about someone who might be in them.
• Plan a family day bike ride. • Organize a scavenger hunt that leads your kids around a local playground or park.
• Create musical instruments from materials found around the house.
• Create science collections together. Collect leaves, stones, or seashells and place them in a container.
• Try some children’s water activities such as pool games, water balloons, or bobbing for apples.
• Make a reading scrapbook. After reading a fantastic book, encourage your child to draw pictures about the story.

• Involve your child in the packing and preparation process. Teach them how to make a packing list.
• Play car games such as I Spy or Twenty Questions to help your child become more observant of their surroundings.
• Act out certain things, such as people or places, and have the other members of the family try to guess what it is. k

8 Tips for Parents and Kids on How to Stay Healthy over the Summer WRITTEN BY: FIU Center for Children and Families
M
ore than one-third of children and adolescents in the U.S. are overweight or obese. According to a health screen conducted by the Center for Children and Families of nearly 400 children ages 4-8 in Miami—more than 40 percent of children are overweight or obese, with most parents not being aware of their child’s current health status. With summer vacation around the corner, Paulo Graziano, psychologist and director of the Healthy Lifestyle Intervention Program (HIP) at the Center for Children and Families, states that “summer is a particularly important time to intervene as children are more likely to gain weight during the school break.” Children who are overweight are more likely to be at risk for future health problems, peer difficulties and mental health issues that can lead to problem behaviors, which can also interfere with learning.
Adopting healthier eating habits and staying active early can help improve children’s academic achievement and lower the risk for obesity and related diseases. However, making healthy lifestyle choices can be challenging for parents, especially if a child is a picky eater. Dr. Graziano and Alexis Garcia, HIP program coordinator, offer some tips for parents and their children on how to stay healthy over the summer. 1. Reduce screen time. Parents should try to reduce the amount of hours spent in front of screens (iPads, TVs, computers, etc.). Although there are many educational programs, it is important to not exceed two hours per day on these devices. 2. Eat dinner as a family. Rather than preparing different dishes for every member in the family, caretakers are encouraged to create one healthy dish that everyone will eat. This can help model the positive eating behaviors you want your children to engage in. 3. Sweat is good for you! Make sure to engage in physical activity with your child that involves getting sweaty. The best physical activities will leave your child’s hairline wet and include both the child and parent in the activity. 4. Let your child pick which healthy food is on their plate. When caretakers are purchasing groceries, allow children to pick out the fruits and vegetables they are willing to try. Children are more likely to eat foods they pick out, rather than foods they are forced to eat. 5. Make it a family effort. If you want your child to pick up healthier habits, encourage your family to be supportive and start making healthier
10
kiddos | June • July 2016
habits themselves. It can encourage the child to pick up these habits sooner if they realize everyone in their family is supportive and making the same choices. 6. Provide praise. It is incredibly important to tell children that their efforts are appreciated. Any and all attempts at trying new foods should be celebrated. Providing positive feedback about their willingness to try the food will increase the chances of them trying it again. 7. Helpful resources. Resources like USDA’s ChooseMyPlate.gov provide families with a variety of tips and suggestions on how to promote healthy habits at home. ChooseMyPlate also has guides for plates with the correct portions for children and adults. These plates can help parents monitor how much their children are eating and what is recommended according to their age. 8. Keep it natural. When choosing snacks, make sure to keep it simple. A bag of fruits and vegetables will be healthier and provide more natural energy than any other snack. Also, try to reduce the amount of juice and milk your children consume. Water is the most beneficial and healthiest drink you can offer your child. k Modeled after the center’s award-winning Summer Treatment Program, the HIP program encourages children to adopt healthier eating habits and enjoy being active while improving their ability to focus and follow classroom rules and routines. The program also teaches parents the skills they need to create a healthy environment for all members of their household. Enrollment for this summer’s program is underway for children ages 4-8.

s another school year comes to an end, parents are faced with making choices about what’s best for their child during the summer break. One thing to keep in mind: summer doesn’t mean spending it at home.
The Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department delivers the fun this summer with the “Live A Park Life Summer Camps.” The camps offer thrilling eco exploration, snorkeling, nature treks and outdoor-fitness challenges, designed to offer better health and wellness and to fuel the imagination.

Campers can choose from fishing, sports development and cheerleading to swimming lessons, creative arts discovery and girl empowerment. Field trips to Zoo Miami, Crandon Park Visitors & Nature Center and the Deering Estate, as well as the
“End-of-Summer Bash” at the Tropical Park Equestrian Center with waterslide fun, sports competitions and more are all part of the assortment of activities . Here comes the sun! Skin Protection Ideas WRITTEN BY: Brian Dyak, Sun Safety Alliance
S
outh Florida, a mecca for “fun in the sun” outdoors yearround, is a great place to enjoy sunrise, sunset, baseball, glistening water, swimming, fishing, boating, the beach, and every outdoor activity possible under the sun. What could be better? Just maybe, being smarter when it comes to understanding that your children can be protected from becoming a skin cancer statistic while enjoying “fun in the sun”. Parenting to prevent skin cancer for your own sake and the sake of your children and loved ones is being a “change maker” from permitting damaged skin (think sunburns, blisters, pain, tears and peeling dead skin) to establishing healthy practices to be sun safe (think smiles, no unnecessary doctor bills). It’s your time to help prevent a highly preventable and deadly disease—skin cancer. UV radiation affects everyone, had I only known that all my unprotected “fun in the sun” would result in cuts and stitches, Mohs surgery, and chemical face peels; I would have lathered up with sunscreen regularly, hung out in the shade more, wore a hat, and compromised my vanity for healthier skin. My mother, a sun worshipper still apologizes to this day for not knowing any better as she distributed suntan oil with iodine (not screen) to boost tanning poolside and at the beach. Ok, so it was a generational faux pas… defined as a social blunder, and she is forgiven. Today’s moms and dads have no excuse to be diligent about keeping children sun safe, it’s part of a parenting skill set that must start early, sets a new norm to be proud of, and just plain smart to learn don’t burn.

Skin Protection Ideas Do You... Have a lot of shadeless areas around your yard? Play area? Pool? Basketball or tennis court? Solution... Plant trees; use large summer umbrellas, awnings, or sun tents around your yard. Do You... Like to enjoy your children on a playground, the beach, at the pool? Solution... Remember: Concrete, sand, water, and snow reflect 85% to 90% of the UV rays. If shading play areas like these are impossible, at least practice being extra sun safe with sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing! Do Your... Kids typically wear shorts and short sleeves outdoors—or go shirtless? Solution... Long-sleeved shirts and pants are ideal for protecting skin. Some companies also now offer “sun-safe” clothing that is light, durable, and ventilated. Do Your... Kids play outside between 10 am and 4 pm? Solution... Generally 10 am to 4 pm is when the sun’s rays are strongest. Be
especially sun safe or consider alternate indoor activity during bad UV days. Do You... Talk to your child about practicing “sun safety?” Solution... This is not a silly idea! Just as you remind your child to “buckle up” in the car, talk to your child often about sun protection. Do You... Always set a good sun-safety example for your children? Solution... Always set a good example by wearing a hat, “cover-up” clothing, sunglasses, and using 30 SPF sunscreen or above when outdoors. k

Celebrating Your Family Man! WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy
W
hen it comes to parenting, often times Mothers are the ones praised and given credit for raising their children. There are ample jokes to go around about how the men just cannot do what women do. Or that they don’t want to! There is a societal “norm” and gender roles. Dads can easily get overlooked. But, in today’s actual climate, there are more and more men that are stepping up to the plate to stay home with kids, nurture and love them up, and participate actively in their lives. No matter the label, or what society tells us, Fathers also deserve special attention and appreciation. Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to let your family-man know how much he means to you.

Catch the Gratitude Bug Make a list of things that everyone is grateful to him for. You can read him the list, hand it to him or make an art project from it to give as a gift. Here are some ideas of things you can jot down:
• What makes Dad special? • What do you love about Dad? • What can you always count on him for?
• What does he do best? • What positive things does he make you feel?

Video Montage Create a video that consists of a compilation of photos, letters or notes, and videos. The notes can tell Dad how much you love him, and the videos can be songs or messages of love, inspiration and wishing him a great Father’s Day. Add some of his favorite music, and it’s sure to be a hit. This is a priceless gift he can look back on anytime he needs a boost.

An Outdoor Learning Activity for Kids to do this Summer Source: Bright Horizons Family Solutions
B
ritish horticulturist and garden writer, Gertrude Jekyll, said, “A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.” These are lofty character traits - ones we want our children to gain. Teaching kids to garden also encourages an attitude of conservation and respect for nature. Perhaps most importantly, though, gardening with children is downright fun. Children are natural explorers who find joy in the simple pleasures of planting seeds or searching for earthworms. Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated, or time-consuming. With just a few minutes per week, you can grow a simple garden project with your child. Below are a few ideas to get you started:
Gardening
Tips for Teaching Kids How to Garden
•
Start small. You don’t need a large yard to teach your child about gardening. In fact, small and simple is generally better because children are more likely to maintain interest and less likely to become overwhelmed. Plant beans or sunflowers in cups placed in a sunny window. Grow a tomato plant in a pot on your patio. Grow a small window garden of flowers. Use a simple project like these to teach your child about gardening basics, such as healthy soil, sunlight, and water. As your child gains experience and interest, you can graduate to a small vegetable or flower garden.
• Choose high-interest plants. To encourage your child to learn about gardening, let your child help decide which plants to grow,
based on his or her interests. Cherry tomatoes make a tasty snack and generally produce fruit earlier than larger tomatoes. Leaf crops, such as lettuce and spinach, grow quickly and can be harvested more than once. Radishes, peas, and carrots can be planted in the spring for an early harvest. How about growing a giant pumpkin for carving or some gorgeous sugar pumpkins for pies? If your child has a yen for flowers, consider quick-blooming annuals, such as snapdragons, marigolds, or petunias.
• Use the right tools. Every gardener needs a set of high-quality tools and gardening gloves, and children are no exception. Give your budding green thumb a child-size shovel and hoe, along with a durable pair of gloves.

kiddos
fun
• Cultivate good habits. Like many things in life, gardening success has as much to do with consistency as with luck or skill. Teach your child to store the tools away after use. Set aside 15 to 20 minutes once or twice a week to tend the garden. Show your child how to pull weeds and water the garden. These experiences offer bite-size lessons in responsibility and organization.
Find the match
• Eat the fruits of your labors. Children get firsthand experience of the food cycle when the plants they grew appear on your dinner table. Cook a tasty meal and let your child help prepare it. Make Margherita pizza with tomatoes and basil. Scrub carrots for a quick snack. Slice strawberries for your breakfast cereal. Better yet, invite friends to join the feast or give your surplus vegetables to a food bank.
As you plan gardening activities with children, consider the growing season and climate in your area. Choose plants known to grow well there. Think about your schedule, including vacations, and plan accordingly. It’s much better to grow a small garden successfully than plan an unrealistic larger project that ends with poor results. Visit reputable local nurseries or your state’s online university extension service to learn more about gardening in your area. k For more information about Bright Horizons visit brighthorizons.com. Solution: 7 (1=8, 2=5=9, 3=6=10,4=11).
• Visit a farm or farmer’s market. Through gardening at home, children begin to understand where their food comes from. A visit to a farm or farmer’s market helps them connect the dots even further and fosters an understanding of and appreciation for the earth and the farmers who work hard to bring us food.

The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Can you tell me who Olly is and how was this idea born?
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What are some of Olly’s latest adventures?
Maria: Olly is a happy character that lives and plays in Miami. The idea was born because I didn’t like the characters that I saw for kids. I thought that some of them had dark, negative and inappropriate messages, so I decided to create something fun, nice, and positive for the kids.
Maria: On Olly’s latest adventure, we visited lifeguards in Miami Beach and learned about the difference between the warning flags on the beach and we also learned about rip currents. If you are swimming in the ocean, it’s important to always be near a lifeguard.
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What are the most important values that Olly wants to share with parents and kids?
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: It’s almost summer. What are Olly’s plans for the summer?
Maria: For Olly, the most important values are family, honesty, loyalty, trust, and friendship.
Maria: Olly has big plans for summer. Olly and I are going to organize a cleanup on the beach and Olly will be teaching kids about how they can take good care of their minds and bodies, like staying active, eating more veggies and drinking a lot of water. Olly will also visit the water parks, go to the ocean, go kayaking, and visit the wonderful parks in Miami.
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What is Olly’s role in our community? Maria: Olly believes that it’s possible to create a better world around us, and that everybody can make a difference. If we all collaborate and work together then we can create a wonderful world. Olly also visits schools and homeless shelters to talk about the environment and give encouraging messages for kids and adults, too.
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Can you describe Olly in three different words? Maria: Friendly, fun, and positive!
To schedule a visit from Olly to your school or event please contact 786.344.6640 or visit ollyplanet.com

Whether eaten out of hand, tossed into a salad or blended in a healthy beverage, there are dozens of delicious ways a healthy serving of watermelon can help hydrate.
Crave-worthy snacks. For kids, cut one-inch slices of the watermelon then use cookie cutters to make fun shapes for snacking.
Frozen treats. Puree watermelon, add chunks of fruit and pour into freezer molds for a sweet way to beat the heat.
Healthy juices. Make a simple watermelon juice for a great post-play date snack. Another option: add watermelon to your kids favorite fruit shakes or smoothies for a new flavor twist.

Entrepreneurship Education Combats Florida’s Youth Unemployment: Student Overcomes Life’s Circumstances through Entrepreneurship
n the wake of the global economic downtown, dangerous trends have emerged that are threatening the future workforce. There are 75 million who are currently unemployed and more than 200 million youth who are earning less than $2US per day. In Florida, the statistics are even more devastating, with 18.2% of youth 20-24 unemployed, and a staggering 31.4% of youth 16-24 unemployed. Entrepreneurship education is a global phenomenon and a proven solution to reverse the youth unemployment epidemic. At NFTE, the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, our staff empowers young people not only to start businesses and create jobs, but also to be opportunity-focused, flexible employees ready to fill existing jobs. It’s these types of real life skills and talents that employers have reported they are looking for when hiring and are key to developing an entrepreneurial mindset to create a successful future. Here in South Florida, NFTE teaches 3000 students a year how to think like entrepreneurs and trains them in the 21st century skills they will need to meet the demands of the future economy. In its 10 year history, NFTE has reached over 30,000 students with the power of recognizing opportunities and going after them

One such successful enterprising teen entrepreneur is Kiera Wesby from COPE Center North. Kiera recently won NFTE’s 10th Annual Regional Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, and will be recognized June 9 at Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Gala. Kiera will showcase her business ideas to community and industry leaders prior to the awards dinner. “When I found out I was pregnant at 15, everyone said that I wouldn’t go anywhere,” says Kiera “But where they see obstacles, I now see opportunity. I expect more from myself because I have a child to take care of and I know that
accomplishing my goals is not impossible.” Kiera is a 17-year-old teen mom. When she first realized that she was pregnant, her top priority was the health of her baby girl. If at times she didn’t feel her baby kicking, she became deeply worried. When she became involved in the NFTE program as part of a Business and Technology class at her school, the COPE Center for Girls, she was determined to take the worry out of pregnancy for other
concerned moms. That’s what led to her NFTE business plan for Baby Bliss, a portable fetal monitor used during the 40 weeks of pregnancy to ensure a baby’s heartbeat is in the healthy range. Kiera is passionate about her education and building a solid future in the face of overwhelming odds. She is proud to be the first in her family who will graduate from high school, and says that her entrepreneurial experience will help her create a different life for herself and her daughter.

“Being a NFTE student has taught me that no matter what obstacles you encounter in life, no one can stop you from chasing your dreams. Being a teen mom also taught me that sometimes people will label you but your opinion of yourself is all that matters.” k
About the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship Too many young people today drop out of school and struggle to break the cycle of poverty. Hundreds of thousands of students have discovered opportunity all around them through entrepreneurship via thousands of certified educators worldwide. Pets and Social Media
Animals garner increased online attention SOURCE: Mars Petcare
F
rom dogs and cats filling up social media feeds – some even with their own profiles – to true pet celebrities who command the attention of millions, animals have become a major part of the digital landscape. With this in mind, Mars Petcare conducted a survey to learn more about people’s social media habits when it comes to animals. Here are some of the top findings. All Animals, All the Time About 65 percent of pet owners post about their furry friends on social media an average of two times per week. One in six said they’ve created

a social media profile specifically for their pet – and half of those pet owners say their pets get more social attention than they do online. One third said they post about their pets as much, and as often, as they do about their human family and 13 percent admitted to posting about their pets even more than they do their human relatives. Pet Love Trumps Personal Vanity More than half of pet owners polled care more about getting “likes” and/ or comments for their pet-related posts than they do for most other topics, including changes to their own profile picture. Whichever way you throw the ball, pet posts matter most.
Call Them the “Paw-Purratzi” Thirty percent of pet owners follow famous animals on social media. The bottom line is people love pets, whether it’s their own or one with real rock star status, and love sharing their stories with the world. The survey underscores what was already known: Pets have become an integral part of people’s lives and pop culture. k Photography: Getty Images

THE RULE OF 11 RULES! Multiplying by 11 is easy with the Rule of 11! The rst digit of the number you’re multiplying by 11 will always be the rst digit of your answer and the last digit will always be your last digit. To get the digits in between, simply add the digits in your number together. For example, 11x16 = 176 and 11x45 = 495.
