5 Tips to Keep Allergy Sufferers from Dreading Spring...

rom flowers poking through the ground to ditching heavy winter parkas, it's easy to look forward to spring. Unless, of course, you have allergies. Then, the path to warmer weather and additional daylight could be marked with watery eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. Makes it hard to be excited, right?

It doesn't have to.

While spring carries its own concerns for allergy sufferers everywhere, there is relief. Now is the perfect time to set plans in place to help ease your allergy symptoms before they begin.

"People think they're doing everything they can to battle spring allergies," says allergist Bradley Chipps, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI). "But many still find themselves under siege from pollen and other allergens that appear once the weather starts to warm up. What they don't realize is that by following a few simple rules they can make life a lot more pleasant, and their allergies more bearable."

As you start your spring allergy planning, keep these five tips from ACAAI in mind. Use them and your spring will be filled with flowers and breezes, not coughing and sneezes.

1. It may not only be allergies. In some cases, the symptoms you are experiencing may not be caused by allergies alone but by another complication such as asthma. Research shows two-thirds of people with asthma also suffer from allergies, making symptoms worse during the spring season. If your symptoms include a persistent cough or feeling winded quickly, asthma could be the cause of your trouble. If this sounds familiar, consult your allergist. Your allergist can help identify the source of your asthma and help treat your allergies to manage your symptoms.

2. Take a deep dive for spring cleaning.

Spring cleaning is a must for many people, but if you suffer from allergies, it's even more important. Clearing dust and cobwebs can ease your sneezing, but for better results, roll up your sleeves and give your home a deep scrub. A thorough cleaning can eliminate allergens such as dust mites and mold, and clear the air.

3. Start your relief early on. Don't wait for your eyes to begin watering before taking your allergy medicine. Start

Instead, choose a HEPA room air cleaner rated with a Clean Air Delivery Rate. 5. Resist the urge to breathe in fresh air.

After months cooped up indoors, you want a fresh breeze, but before you open your windows, beware. Opening windows allows pollen and other debris into your home where they can settle in your carpet or upholstery. As hard as it can be, you're better off keeping your windows closed during peak allergy season. Use your air conditioning to regulate your home's temperature instead.

For people with allergies, spring's annual arrival feels like a mixed blessing. By using the tips above, you can ensure that you have everything you need to make spring great. And you'll do so with less of the coughing and sneezing that can go with it.

Family Dental Tips for Earth Day and Every Day Assure A Smile Holistic Dentistry

arth Day is April 22. In honor of the big event, we've come up with several easy ways to add a little green to your dental routine—now and year-round.

Healthy Diet and Active Lifestyle. A beautiful smile starts with a balanced diet including healthy fruits and vegetables.

Buy organic and from local sources when possible. Avoid overly processed foods and harsh chemicals. Limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks. In addition, regular exercise (or daily activity such as yard work) can improve overall health plus lead to healthier teeth and gums.

Spring Cleaning. Brush your teeth two times per day (in the morning and the evening), and floss daily. The key to having a vibrant smile is maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums. Spring is also a great time to plan family dental check ups and professional teeth cleanings.

Conserve Water. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save eight gallons of water per day by being smarter with your faucet. Try this routine: Wet your toothbrush under the faucet and turn off the tap, apply your toothpaste, and brush your teeth. Then fill a small glass with water and rinse with water from the glass.

Consider Alternative Toothbrushes.

There are several brands of toothbrushes made from recycled or renewable materials, such as bamboo, beechwood, or recycled plastic. In addition, biodegradable and compostable toothbrushes are available (made from materials such as corn starch or plant-based bioplastic).

There are even toothbrush recycling and buy-back programs, such as those through Preserve and Terracycle.

Even More Earth-Friendly Ideas: • When it's time to replace your toothbrush (every 3 to 4 months), instead of throwing it away, use it as a household cleaning tool.

• Remember to recycle plastic mouthwash containers.

• Don't flush your floss. Nylon or Teflon dental floss will not break down like disposable products. It's better to toss it in the garbage. Biodegradable/ recyclable silk flosses or floss picks are also smart options.

• Pick up litter and plant a tree.

How To Go Green Every Day As A Family

any families strive to inspire and nurture in children a sense of stewardship for the planet. There are many Earth Day activities for families to try, but foremost, we want to teach children to respect all living things, to care for the natural resources upon which our existence depends, and to appreciate nature. Early childhood is a good time for children to develop a sense of appreciation for the planet and all it has to offer. Thus it's important to begin developing sustainable habits, such as protecting the environment and conserving our resources, early in life.

How to teach kids to go green The first step in helping kids to go green is to help them develop a deep love for our earth. Children are more likely to want to take care of the natural world if they have a connection to it. To raise earthfriendly kids, some families take nature walks, hike in the mountains, walk in the

woods, or explore rivers, bays, or oceans.

Other families walk around their neighborhoods to enjoy the natural life, pick up litter in community areas, work in a garden, plant seeds in pots, look at foliage and flowers, or use digital cameras to photograph insects. Regardless of whether you live in a city or on a farm, nature surrounds you when you open your doors.

Secondly, families can raise environmental awareness and help children develop green habits by making the Three R’s (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) part of their family culture. We are our children’s most important role models. By going green as a family and practicing the Three R’s, we not only make a profound impact on conserving the world’s resources, but we help children develop lifelong dispositions to earth-friendly behaviors. Below are a few suggestions to go green by reducing, reusing & recycling: • Reduce: Even our youngest children can be taught to turn off lights, turn off the faucet while brushing teeth, or draw on two sides of a sheet of paper.

Some families reduce their gasoline consumption by walking, carpooling, bike riding, or using public transportation.

• Reuse: Whenever possible, use items that can be reused, rather than disposed of. Consider using cloth napkins instead of paper, lunch boxes instead of disposable sacks, and put food in washable containers rather than plastic bags. Some families wrap gifts in reused fabric or their kid’s artwork rather than buying wrapping paper.

• Recycle: In most communities, recyclable paper and plastic can be sorted and sent to recycling centers or curbside recycling can be used. Families can also recycle toys, clothes, and other items by passing them on to friends or donating them to charitable organizations. The wonderful projects brought home from child care or school can be recycled as gifts to appreciative relatives. Food scraps can be composted and recycled back to the earth.

There are many shades of green and no single correct way to go green as a family to raise socially and environmentally aware children. Being a green family means different things to different families, so decide what works and feels right for your family. Every small step helps your child develop lifelong habits while making an important, positive impact on the earth.

Six Ways to Help

Though parents may feel powerless when a child is excluded, there is much they can do to help with this painful experience.

P

arents can help their kids deal with social exclusion by teaching them coping skills and empowering them to seek healthy friendships. While your natural instinct may be to get the school involved, communicate with the parents of other kids, and jump into problem-solving mode, what kids need most is support, empathy, and space from the problem. Try some of these strategies adapted from No More Mean Girls.

Watch for the signs Given that kids experience feelings of shame and embarrassment when being victimized, they don’t always come forward right away. Many wait until they feel like they’re falling apart before they reach out for a lifeline. To that end, it helps parents to watch out for the red flags that a child is experiencing relational aggression:

• Anxious or nervous behaviors.

• Frequent physical complaints, such as headaches or stomachaches, particularly before school or social events.

• Talking about sitting alone at lunch or playing alone at recess more often than not.

• Appearing withdrawn or depressed.

• Changing academic performance.

• Acting out in class or at home, or even turning the tables and acting as the bully.

• Talking about having no friends or being “hated”.

• Changing eating habits.

• Talking about death or engaging in self-harm (cutting).

• Sleep disturbance: Difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, frequent nightmares, or excessive sleeping.

Once you see these signs, you will want to check in with your child or the

school to see if relational aggression may be causing them.

Use conversation starters One reason kids hesitate to come forward when dealing with relational aggression is that it’s difficult to discuss. They don’t want their parents to think that they’re incapable of making friends.

Open and honest communication with kids is essential during middle childhood and the tween/teen years.

They need to know that parents will listen without judgment and provide unconditional love and support. To get in the habit of deep, distractionfree conversations, create a pack of conversation starters to use when you have downtime together. It helps to start a weekly ritual of quiet conversation and hot chocolate (or some other cozy treat).

Make a friendship tree Kids are usually tasked with making a family tree at some point in school, but making a friendship tree is a great way to help kids realize that they have many different friends in life. Just as the family extends beyond the people living in your home, friendships blossom in a variety of contexts.

Start the tree with the friends your child knows the best (even the ones she/he doesn’t spend much time with), but cue your child to think about friends made in sports, through religious organizations, in extracurricular classes, or even at your local park. In filling the branches with friends from a wide variety of settings, children learn to focus on the positive relationships in their lives. When kids see that they have more friends than the people sitting at their lunch table, they are empowered to strengthen those other branches and even add new ones by trying new clubs, sports, or activities.

Talking to Your Children About Loss SOURCE: Children’s Bereavement Center

The stressors of everyday life often seem difficult enough to navigate. When a crisis occurs, normal feelings of anxiety, sadness, grief, helplessness, and even anger can be more exaggerated.

O

ur natural hopes are that we can provide for the comfort and safety of our children. But all too often, negative life events interfere with the sense of competence and peace we strive for. In responding to a crisis, whether it’s a death, natural disaster, violence, or trauma the CBC offers the following information as a guide for conversation and support that can help in times of need.

Begin with you – Any effort to assist your child(ren) should begin with reflection on your own needs and intentions. Helping others is most effective when you have found support and comfort personally, and are then able to address the needs of others from a stance of safety, consistency, and availability. Children are especially sensitive to the stress felt by adults offering help and may even withhold their needs so as to not burden others. Taking care of oneself is the first step in helping others.

What does your child know? - Start with what they know. Asking your child what they already know allows you to be grounded in what information is really needed. It also builds trust that their opinions are important to you, even when you disagree.

Assume that children are listening, paying attention, and will be exposed to information about the event.

Information is more comfortable coming from someone who cares, like you.

Listen carefully – Listen for the thoughts, needs, and feelings behind what is shared. As your child explains, listen for misinformation, misconceptions, and any underlying fears or concerns. It’s OK to disagree, just gently correct inaccurate information.

If your child misunderstands or has inaccurate information, take time to provide the correct information in simple, clear, and age-appropriate language.

Talk about it (simply) - Children benefit from honest, clear, and age appropriate information. Withholding information can contribute to their natural anxieties and may give the impression that things are too horrible to discuss. Simple, clear, and honest comments help to begin the conversation and allow children to share with you. Remember that children are not always burdened by the weight of perspective we adults have. Giving children a simple vocabulary for the expression of feelings and events helps with their sharing: • —“Something very sad/bad has happened…”

• —“We don’t have all the answers yet, but I’ll let you know” • —“We can talk more later…”

• —“I am sorry/sad also…”

This will be a continuing conversation. It will not, and does not, need to occur in one sitting. You do not have to provide a solution.

Be an example – Explain how you feel to your child. Sharing your feelings and being honest about your emotions is a good example to children. Let them know it is OK to cry….i.e., crying often helps us to feel better.

Children benefit from seeing how appropriate coping looks. Hiding your feelings may give the impression that we don’t talk about things that are difficult. Children want reassurance that you are taking care of yourself. If you are having trouble managing your emotions, find support for yourself. Share with your children the positives in the situation where possible (response of professionals, family and community support, tribute opportunities).

Limit exposure to the media – Continued or repeated stories/images about a crisis event can be overwhelming to children.

Younger children may believe that repeated images and news stories are separate events.

They may not comprehend the facts of the situation and misinterpret dangers that have passed. Understand that your exposure to the media can also contribute to

your stress and will be perceived by those around you. If your child has been exposed to a troubling story/image, take a moment to turn off the television, and quietly ask what they think has happened. Take the opportunity to discuss and clarify the event.

Stay focused on what we can do to respond and find support.

Patience, patience, patience – Be patient with those around you and with yourself. Feelings and behaviors can change over time. Focus on the adjustment to life after the event. It

is an ongoing and long term experience.

Connect with others – Often there are resources and others who are also making effort to provide assistance following a crisis. Working together with others allows for shared energy and a sense of strength that can help during the stress of crisis response. Be open to assistance and remember you don’t have to do it all yourself. Engage with family, friends, and professionals where needed. Remember, you are not alone.

uch has changed in 30 years.

30 years ago, the Surgeon General published the government’s first major statement on HIV prevention; Cleve Jones created the first panel for the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and the FDA had yet to approve any drugs for the treatment of AIDS. HIV/AIDS is now a manageable illness, with a host of medications allowing people to live longer, healthier lives. What hasn’t changed is that people are still getting HIV, more than 40,000 every year and people living with HIV/AIDS still need services that are funded by AIDS Walk Miami.

Jorge Bernal, television presenter for La Voz Kids, Suelta La Sopa Telemundo and NBC Universal is serving as Grand Marshall. According to Bernal, "It is an honor to serve as the Grand Marshal for the 30th Anniversary of AIDS Walk Miami. Advances in treatment and new prevention strategies have now made "Getting to Zero" - zero new infections, zero deaths, zero stigma - an achievable goal! Getting to zero still requires the efforts of everybody. Please join me on

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber is serving as Master of Ceremonies. According to Gelber, "It is an honor to serve as Master of Ceremonies for this year's AIDS Walk Miami on April 22. We can all help make HIV/AIDS a thing of the past. MiamiDade County is ranked #1 in the country for the number of new HIV and AIDS cases. That needs to change. This walk is a key part of that effort. It shows that our community is not only inclusive but also committed to helping those affected by HIV/AIDS and becoming better educated about the virus. Together we can truly change the course of this epidemic and get to zero new infections, zero deaths, and zero stigma."

The 30th Annual AIDS Walk Miami is a 5K (3.1 miles) walk-a-thon fundraiser benefiting Care Resource and the Foodfor-Life-Network. All funds raised from AIDS Walk Miami are used in MiamiDade and Broward to help diverse communities in need including case management services, housing assistance, food assistance, counseling, pre-

The Walk starts outside SoundScape park located at 500 17th Street in Miami Beach, FL. Registration begins at 8:00 am. The walk begins promptly at 9:00 am. To register online, visit www.aidswalkmiami.org. During the post-walk ceremony, a community health fair with a variety of activities for families and the community is available for attendees. The community health fair, shortly after AIDS Walk Miami, includes pet adoptions, free wellness screenings, HIV testing, carnival games, fun giveaways, dozens of booths with information about available Medical and Support Resources and more. Walkers are encouraged to visit every station at the health fair and complete a “health passport,” which they obtain after the walk. Each participant receives prizes and incentives for their participation.
