orld Down Syndrome Day is Thursday, March 21, 2019. According to the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, “In the U.S., Down syndrome is the least funded major genetic condition by our National Institutes of Health despite being the most frequent chromosomal disorder. Because of this, and because of lack of funding from other government organizations, there is surprisingly little known definitively about the condition.”
On World Down Syndrome Day, people worldwide with Down syndrome, and those who live, work with and love them, hold and participate in activities and events in an effort to raise public awareness and to create a unified voice for advocating for rights, inclusion and well-being of those with Down syndrome. The cause of the condition is unknown. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimated the frequency of Down syndrome in the US is 1 in 691 live births in 2011, (up from 1 in 1087 in 1990). 38% of Americans know someone with Down syndrome.

One very special little girl known as the Brave Warrior, Valentina Guerrero, has shared her life and story in the public eye, becoming a model and voice for Down Syndrome. Through images and daily occurrences, Valentine and her family seek to “change the outdated perception of her genetic condition.”

Valentina was born in Miami Beach on September 16, 2011. She wasted no time in teaching her parents Juan and Cecilia how to focus on the positive aspects of life instead of the challenges. She inspired them to help change the perception of Downs Syndrome, and they quickly realized the great capacity that those born with this condition embody. Through their experiences, they chose to enlighten others. At only 9 months old, Valentina was chosen to represent the children’s collection DC Kids USA 2013 and became the first person with Down syndrome to serve as the main model for a major fashion brand. Her beautiful face and smile have graced the covers of magazines and publications including People Magazine, and she has been seen on MTV and other worldwide popular TV shows. In 2012, she was chosen as one of the Top 10 Models under 16. She has appeared in Times Square and in 2014, a clothing line was named after her by Little Cotton, and 10% of all profits went to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). She continued to model for brands like Gap, Walmart, ToysRUs and Carters. What’s perhaps most important, though, is her social media presence where she shows society what it’s like to live a day in the life of a child with Down Syndrome. The goal? To “generate a more inclusive society that respects, values and celebrates diversity.”

Valentina’s mother, Cecilia, said, “I realized how incredible individuals with Down syndrome are. They’re so evolved on a spiritual level, and we have so much to learn from them. But we don’t hear enough of that. We hear outdated comments about their potential. I wanted to help change that perception.” Valentina embodies kindness, curiosity, determination, joy, and like her name suggests in Spanish, she is absolutely a brave warrior" Her life is like most children’s, except for the fact that she is now sometimes recognized on the street as a result of her modeling and inspiring thousands of individuals around the world, simply by being who she is. Valentina’s day-to-day life is quite busy! Every single morning Valentina wakes up at 6:30 AM and her mother prepares breakfast for her and her 4 year old brother, Oliver. Nutrition is an important part of her development. She is starting to read books, learn addition, and even Mandarin; the third language she currently speaks fluently (alongside English and Spanish). Her school fosters diversity; one of Valentina’s best friends has Cerebral Palsy, another is from Russia, and yet another good friend is African American. They all coexist happily, learning from each other, valuing the benefits of individuality.
Weekends are full of planned activities that stimulate Valentina & Oliver’s development; they look at Kiddos Magazine and newsletter for ideas! The family hangs out with friends so they can have fun and socialize, visits different museums, the Zoo, frequents cultural activities, street fairs, and all sorts of parks (indoor, outdoor, waterparks, etc),. Their favorite outdoor parks are Morningside, South Pointe, Fisher Park and Vanderbilt Park. They also like to go out for ice cream about twice a month; Valentina loves anything with chocolate. Her favorite vacation so far has been to Aspen where she experienced snow for the first time! Valentina loves music, so you’ll often find her singing a song or playing around with her instruments (violin, keyboard, ukulele, guitar and maracas). When she was a baby, until she was 5, Valentina went to early stimulation music-oriented classes. Music is an essential part of her life. Her favorite game is to pretend to be a teacher; she lines up all of her little dolls and tells them what to do in her class. Every week the family is asked for tips to maximize a child’s development, so they created a YouTube channel to share what has worked best in their experience, in hopes of saving time and money to those families that are privileged to have a child with Down syndrome. Because they know as well as Valentina’s family, that they are #TheLuckyFew. k

April is World Autism Month One in 59 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism today, and research tells us that for people with autism, early intervention leads to the best outcomes. That’s why learning the signs and knowing the steps to take following a diagnosis are so important.

T
hough the average age of diagnosis is 4, autism can be reliably diagnosed by 18 months in most cases. For parents, the first step can be as simple as knowing what developmental milestones to look out for in their children. Signs of autism can include lack of eye contact by 6 months; no pointing, reaching or waving by 12 months; and loss of babbling or speech at any age.
Not all children with autism show all the signs. Many children who don’t have autism show a few. That’s why professional evaluation is crucial.
Following an autism diagnosis, parents often have mixed emotions and an avalanche of questions: What will my child’s future hold? How can I help, and where do I start? The Autism Speaks 100-Day Kit can help answer many of those questions during this critical time.
By 6 months • Few or no big smiles or other warm, joyful and engaging expressions. • Limited or no eye contact. By 9 months • Little or no back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions By 12 months • Little or no babbling • Little or no back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving • Little or no response to name. By 16 months • Very few or no words.
Learn the Signs One of the most important things you can do as a parent or caregiver is to learn the early signs of autism and become familiar with the typical developmental milestones that your child should be reaching.

The following signs may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If your child exhibits any of the following, please don’t delay in asking your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation:
By 24 months • Very few or no meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) At any age • Loss of previously acquired speech, babbling or social skills • Avoidance of eye contact • Persistent preference for solitude • Difficulty understanding other people’s feelings • Delayed language development • Persistent repetition of words or phrases (echolalia) • Resistance to minor changes in routine or surroundings • Restricted interests • Repetitive behaviors (flapping, rocking, spinning, etc.) • Unusual and intense reactions to sounds, smells, tastes, textures, lights and/or colors If you have concerns, get your child screened and contact your healthcare provider. The M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) can help you determine if a professional should evaluate your child. This simple online autism screen, available on AutismSpeaks.org takes only a few minutes. If the answers suggest your child is at risk for autism, please consult your child’s doctor. Likewise, if you have any other concerns about your child's development, don't wait. Speak to your doctor now about screening your child for autism. k

iscover the secrets of everyday stuff in the new Strange Matter exhibition, opening Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (1101 Biscayne Blvd.) in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park. Located on floors two and three of the museum’s West Wing, Strange Matter delves into the world of
materials science, or the study of “stuff.” A dynamic blend of physics, chemistry and engineering, this field of research studies how things are put together, how they might be improved or how they can change to create brand new materials. In Strange Matter, guests will interact with over a dozen hands-on activities to investigate the very structure of these materials and discover what gives them their intriguing and remarkable properties. The exhibition captures advanced materials used in high-tech fields such as the space program and cardiac surgery and reveals them in more common places, from the shoes that you wear and the dishes you eat off of to the bike or skateboard you ride.

ur world is a melting pot of different configurations, beliefs, cultural norms, and personal practices. Every child and family comes to a child care community with different values and experiences. One of the most important gifts we can give our children is to help them feel good about the uniqueness of their family and help them learn to accept, respect, and include people whom they may experience as "different." Answering Questions About Diverse Family Structures When children become aware of diverse family structures, they might ask a question such as, "Can someone have two mommies?" Usually, when a young child asks such a question, he is looking for a "yes" or "no." Children are not typically on a journey seeking a deeper level of understanding. Many of us tend to give more information than necessary, but young children don’t associate the adults in families

a lesbian couple, mother and grandmother, surrogate or foster mothers, etc. Typically, people interpret within their own frame of reference. with their sexual orientation. Preschool children are concrete thinkers and not ready for, nor do they want, a philosophical discussion. They do not yet have the cognitive ability, nor the life experience, to understand gay vs. straight relationships—nor are they interested. Young children are simply attempting to find their place in this big world and trying to make sense of the concept of family, whether traditional or non-traditional. Children’s growing awareness of diverse family structures provides rich opportunities to help them celebrate family diversity and engage them in conversation about who is in THEIR family, who lives in THEIR house and more importantly, who takes care of them. People will associate "two mommies" with a myriad of possibilities: a blended family, a divorced couple,
Children tend to thrive when they come to understand there are varying family structures and that all families are wonderful, so long as the people in them love and care about each other. This repeated message helps children feel secure, even if their family configuration changes through death, separation, or other life events. So when children ask, "Can a family have two mommies?" one suggested response is: "Yes, some families may have two mommies, one mommy, no mommy, or even lots of mommies. And some families may have two daddies, one daddy, no daddy, or even lots of daddies. Some families also include grandparents, foster parents, aunts, and uncles. Any combination works. It’s love that makes a family— just like in our family."

This Valentine’s Day, give your family the most precious gift of all; true, unconditional love. Here are the top 5 ways to truly show and express your love for your family (and very importantly, yourself!): Accept the whole. To love someone is to accept them fully for who they are, imperfections and all. Love does not seek to change. Love celebrates the other person for who they are as a whole. Learning to accept one other, embracing everyone’s quirks and not “sweating the small stuff,” can greatly help all of you to open your hearts, appreciating and understanding one another (and yourselves) in a new way. Support and nurture. Part of loving someone is being supportive, encouraging them to be the best version of themselves; to be what they want to be, not what we want them to be or think they should be.
