interactives, videos, art installations and a live presentation to explore the rapidly evolving science that is revolutionizing how we view human health and understand the inner workings of our bodies. Discover the human microbiome—the vast community of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes that call our bodies home—in this new special exhibition at
Frost Science. Although many of us think of microorganisms as “germs” that cause disease, only a tiny percentage of them actually make people sick. This interactive exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the human body to explore the microbiome. Find out what these microbes are, where they are found, how they interact within us and how incredible new discoveries are redefining notions of human health.
How do your interactions with microbes—from the type of environment where you grew up to the number of times you have taken antibiotics, which destroy both bad and good bacteria— influence your health? In what ways can your microbiome be said to be its own organ? And is it possible that the state of the bacteria in your gut plays a role in your mental health? Regular use of lip balms that contain a high SPF sunscreen can help reduce the risk of lip cancer. Summer Treats The summer is a popular time for ice cream, popsicles, snow cones and other sugary snacks and sodas. While an occasional treat is fine, be careful of too much sugar in your kids’ diet – not only because of the empty calories, but also because sugar can lead to tooth decay. Healthier choices include fruits and vegetables. Here are a few yummy ideas: homemade strawberry salsa, chilled fruit salad, healthy smoothies,

yogurt with berries or nuts, sugar snap peas, frozen grapes, bananas or watermelon, and of course, water. Keep Up Your Dental Routine With no school during the summer for most children, it is tempting to slack a bit from normal routines. Remind your kids to brush their teeth twice daily (in the morning and at night) and to floss every day. Also, families typically have more time in the summer to go to the dentist for teeth cleanings or other necessary procedures, so now is the time to make dental appointments for your family. k

M-DCPS Offers Summer Learning Tips
To Parents Of Children Entering Kindergarten To prevent the summer slide, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) Department of Early Childhood Programs is offering tips for parents whose children will be entering Kindergarten in August.
T
o reinforce early learning skills during the summer, parents are encouraged to turn everyday moments into learning experiences and try out the following tips and strategies: • Talk with your child – Ask your child questions that require more than a yes or no response. Repeat and build upon what your child says and introduce new vocabulary. Encourage your child to use newly acquired words when applicable. • Read aloud to your child every day – Designate a “reading time” for the whole family or for just you and your child. Practice early reading skills by letting your child hold the book and turn the pages. Encourage your child to describe the pictures and share what they notice. Move your finger

along under the words to develop concepts of print. • Write about experiences – Assign a consistent location for writing and encourage your child to write about their summer experiences. Early in development, children’s drawings and scribbles are their writing. Allow your child to share experiences on paper in his/her own way. • Turn everyday moments into teachable moments – Use laundry time, a trip to the grocery store or a ride in the car to teach your child. Ask your child to help sort laundry and talk about the similarities and differences between the clothing. When shopping with your child, read the logos of favorite foods or stores, let your child pick out fruits or
vegetables and identify the beginning sound of their name. When riding in the car, look for words found on billboards and signs, count colored cars or engage in rhymes and sing-a-longs. • Visit your local library – Schedule weekly trips to the library and check out summer reading books, e-books, audiobooks, music, videos, and more. In the first study to calculate children’s social, behavioral and academic difficulties into a family’s cost of raising a child with ADHD, researchers at FIU’s Center for Children and Families discovered raising a child with ADHD costs five times more than raising a child without ADHD.

aising a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) costs American families an estimated $5.8 billion every year—five times more than raising a child without ADHD—according to a new study by researchers at FIU’s Center for Children and Families.

Children with ADHD often have academic and behavioral difficulties in the classroom that lead to additional costs for families, including private tutoring, summer classes, computer software or other learning services beyond those provided by the education system. These children also frequently lose belongings and school supplies requiring replacement, experience dismissal from extracurricular activities,
“Despite the extensive research that has been done on the impairments related to ADHD, not much research has been done on the financial burden it has had on families,” said Xin Alisa Zhao, lead author of the study and

and miss lessons or extracurricular activities after parents have already paid fees or purchased equipment. “On average, families of kids with ADHD spent $15,036 per child—not including treatment—and families of kids without ADHD spent $2,848 over the course of a child’s development,” said economist Timothy F. Page of the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work. “There are other sources of elevated cost to families above and beyond medication and services directly related to treatment for ADHD that were not being accounted for in previous estimates.”

In addition, teens diagnosed with ADHD in childhood have a higher rate of car accidents, likely resulting in out-of-pocket expenses due to damaged vehicles, fines, tickets and increased costs of automobile insurance. Some families may also experience high economic burden associated with delinquency including costs of legal defense.

The study also looked at other costs related to caregiver strain and found that parents reported income loss due to being fired and changed job responsibilities, income loss from missed work, additional childcare expenses, and treatment for the parent’s mental health concerns. Besides financial and occupational impact, caregivers also experienced socio-emotional burden including strained relationships between parenting partners, difficulty engaging in pleasurable social activities, high parenting stress, and substance or alcohol problems. “ADHD is the most common childhood mental health problem, which if left untreated, allows for children with mental health issues to grow into adults with more prevalent, complex and costly problems that affect the whole family,” said William E. Pelham, Jr., director of FIU’s Center for Children and Families. “The most important thing parents of children with ADHD can do is get help as early as possible to learn effective behavioral strategies that will help to offset some of these costs and prevent more serious issues in adulthood.” k

here’s no time like a hot summer picnic to let your patriotic spirit show. These all-American snacks featuring a classic favorite fruit – watermelon – are the perfect solution for nearly any summertime celebration. Watermelon is a patriotic picnic staple for countless reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a beloved treat that many people associate with memories from childhood. hen school’s almost out, the heat’s on and afternoon thunderstorms roll in like clockwork, it can only mean one thing: summer is almost here. And with classrooms winding up their lesson plans for the year, parents are left asking a very crucial question: “what are we going to do with the kids?” The answer? Summer Camp at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, taking place June 10 through August 9! They’re hosting two camps this year—a nine-week session for pre-K through 5th graders starting June 10 at their Maurice A. Ferré Park campus and a two-week program beginning June 24 which takes 6th-8th graders on an adventure through different ecological sites in Miami-Dade County. Summer learning loss—or “brain drain”—isn’t a new concept. Teachers and researchers have long pointed to a noticeable setback when children return to class from a long summer break, with STEM subjects often being amongst the most impacted.
The good news is that enrichment programs and life experiences like the ones offered at Frost Science can combat this loss and even increase children’s skill levels before the head back to school. The Frost Science summer camp classes are staffed by CPR and first aid certified educators and scientists. Throughout the camp weeks, kids will embark on week-long themed camps that bring STEM subjects to life in an interactive and thrilling way. From the microbiome in our gut to the biomechanics involved in walking and talking, kids will examine the science of the human body in The Amazing Human Body week. In Ocean Exploration, kids dive into the world of marine science while getting up close and personal with the creatures we share our beaches with. They’ll channel their inner marine biologist and encounter the diverse living organisms that live underwater, from the oceans’ surface to its mysterious deep.
Each week of camp will include a Frost Planetarium show and free exploration time around the museum. Two daily snacks and a camp t-shirt are included with camp tuition, along with an option to purchase a daily pre-made delicious and healthy lunch. Before and after care are also available to campers. A 15% sibling discount is available for two or more registrations from the same household.

10 Family Road Trip Activities
W
e had been on the road for several hours when my son said he had to go to the bathroom. I told him I would get off at the next exit, but he said he couldn’t wait and asked for a cup. I decided to give him one, after all, he had done that successfully several times before. Before I knew it my daughter was screaming and when I looked back all I could see was a powerful stream headed right for me. The fact that my son could hit my husband and me all the way from the back of the minivan was impressive. When all was said and done the only thing dry in the van was the cup. I don’t recommend peeing for distance as a road trip activity. But as you are on your adventure here are 10 family road trip activities to enjoy your time together. 1. The Alphabet Game. Pick a topic—animals, for instance. Start with A, and let each person, in turn, name an animal that begins with a letter of the alphabet. To make things more challenging, ask each person to recite all the animals that have been named so far, as they go along. When you reach Z, begin again with a different topic. 2. The License Plate Game. See how many different state license plates you can spot on your trip. Keep a list of your sightings. Or, before your trip, print out a map of the U.S. and check off each state when you see a vehicle with that plate.
Tally up each person’s score at every rest stop to see who has the most points. 7. The Drawing Game. Pass around a piece of paper, and let everyone add one line until it forms a picture. When the picture is complete, let the kids color it in. 8. 20 Questions. In this classic game, Player 1 thinks of an object; then the other players, in turn, ask one question at a time to try and guess what it is. But the limit is 20 questions. If they haven’t guessed by then, Player 1 wins!
3. Picture It. Give each child an inexpensive disposable camera and allow them to take photos of anything of interest they see along the way. After the trip, have the photos developed and let each child create their own homemade storybook about their travels. 4. Aluminum Foil Art. Take along a roll of aluminum foil and let your kids use it to craft their own creations. They might try making jewelry, animal sculptures, hats, cars— the possibilities are as endless as their imaginations! 5. Travel Bingo and Other Games. Pick up a set of travel bingo boards at the local dollar store or download iMOM’s Road Trip Bingo—the ones with the little red windows that slide across each square as the letters and numbers are called. Also, download iMOM’s Road Trip I Spy. 6. Counting Games. Assign each member of the family something specific to count along your route. Think cows, fire trucks, trains, police cars, horses, American flags, etc.
9. Travel Totes. This one takes a little advance planning, but it’s worth it! Pick up an inexpensive tote bag for each child and fill it with books, crayons, coloring books, a notepad, their favorite portable snacks and treats, and a favorite toy. Each child has their own bag will eliminate back seat battles over whose turn it is to use the crayons next! 10. Roadside Attractions and Tacky Tourist Traps. Factor in a little fun along the road by stopping at one offbeat spot: a quirky souvenir stand; a local advertising oddity like a gigantic chicken statue, an unusual roadside museum, or maybe even a dinner in the shape of a hot dog. Even a quick pit stop in a fun spot can refresh and revive everyone and inspire lively conversation for the rest of the trip. k

The Ultimate Beginners Guide How To Become A Child Model/Actor
E
verywhere we go, no matter where we go, we are surrounded by advertisements selling a product or service. In these advertisements, you see child models or actors selling for these brands. You might think to yourself, “How do I get my child involved in child modeling or acting?” From clothing stores and theme parks to doctor’s offices and everything in between, we are constantly being sold to in print, on television, at the movies, and on the radio. But what does it take to make your child a star in an ad?
• One full body • And one photo smiling with their teeth showing (This obviously does not apply to babies who do not yet have teeth!) For Babies and Toddlers Make sure they are fully dressed and clean. They should not be wearing hats, bows, or anything too distracting. Choose a simple, clean, everyday outfit. For Kids and Teens Everyday outfits (T-Shirt and jeans is perfect) No hats, sunglasses, or anything distracting. No makeup is necessary, but light grooming is good.

Step One: Find Representation That Meets Your Focus, Location, & Goals The first step in getting representation is finding an agency that fits the direction in which you would like to take your child. Some parents choose to use separate agencies if their child is more into acting than print or vice versa. You also need to make sure you find an agency in an area that is in close proximity to your home or one in a city you are willing to travel to. Some states have multiple cities that are considered ‘busy’ in this industry. Make sure you either have
an agency in each of those cities or select an agency that offers representation in multiple areas. Step Two: Smile for the Camera After identifying the direction you would like to go and the agency you would like to submit to, your next step is to get your child in front of a camera or your smartphone camera. All you need is clear, bright, clutter-free photos of your child that highlights his/her personality and shows clearly what he/she looks like right now. These photos are your entrance into the modeling industry, so choose with intention! Professional photos are NOT required and will not alter your chances into getting representation. These photos should represent who your child is currently and should be taken specifically for the submission. Try to refrain from using filters or heavily editing your photos. Photos to send: • Include a close up (a photo that shows everything above the child’s shoulders)

Step Three: Submit! You can choose to submit to your top agency choice, or to multiple agencies. If the agency is interested, you should generally hear back within 2 weeks; although, some agencies may take up to a month. If you do not hear back from someone, please do not be discouraged. Research more agents, get your child into acting classes, start an Instagram account featuring your child, and/or take new pictures. Most agencies allow you to apply again in a few months.
