etting a new school year off to a good start can influence children’s attitude, confidence, and performance, both socially and academically. The transition from August to September can be difficult for both children and parents. Even children who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and, for some, pressures associated with school life. The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but parents can help their children (and the rest of the family) manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude.

8

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS The following suggestions can help ease the transition and promote a successful school experience: Be sure your children are in good physical and mental health. Schedule doctor and dental checkups early. Discuss with your pediatrician any concerns you have over your children’s emotional or psychological development. Your doctor can help determine if your concerns are normal, ageappropriate issues or require further assessment. Your children will benefit if you can identify and begin addressing potential problems before school starts. kiddos | August • September 2015

Review the material sent by the school as soon as it arrives. These packets include important information about your children’s teachers, assigned classrooms, school supply requirements, sign-ups for after-school sports and activities, school calendar dates, bus transportation, health and emergency forms, and volunteer opportunities. Mark your calendar. Make a note of significant dates, especially back-toschool nights. This is especially important if you have children in more than one school and need to juggle obligations. Arrange for a baby-sitter well in advance of the

visit with your child’s teachers, as other parents will be seeking baby-sitting services for the same night. Make multiple copies of all your child’s health and emergency information for reference. Health forms are typically good for more than a year and can be used again for camps, extracurricular activities, and the following school year. Buy school supplies early. Organize supplies and backpacks a week or two before school starts. Older children can help do this, but make sure they use a checklist that you can review. Some teachers require

specific supplies, so save receipts for items that you may need to return later. Reestablish bedtime and mealtime routines (especially breakfast) at least 1 week before school starts. Prepare your children for this change by talking about the benefits of school routines in terms of not becoming overtired or overwhelmed by schoolwork and activities. Help them to understand the reasons for these schedule adjustments so they do not view the changes as a punishment. Include pre-bedtime reading and household chores if these were suspended during the summer.

flash cards, color, or read as early morning activities instead of watching television. This will help ease them into the learning process and school routine. If possible, maintain this practice throughout the school year. Television is distracting for many children, and they will arrive at school better prepared to learn each morning if they have engaged in less passive activities. Visit school with your children. If your children are young or in new schools, schedule a school visit before classes begin. Meeting teachers and locating classrooms, locker, lunchroom, and so

on will help ease anxieties and also allow your children to ask questions about the new environment. Call ahead to make sure the teachers will be available to introduce themselves. Minimize clothes shopping woes. Buy only the essentials. Summer clothes are usually fine during the early fall, but be sure each child has at least one pair of sturdy shoes. Check with your school to confirm dress code guidelines. Designate a study/work area for homework. Older children should have the option of studying in their room or a

Turn off the TV. Encourage your children to play quiet games, do puzzles, review

quiet area of the house. Younger children usually need an area set aside in the family room or kitchen to facilitate adult monitoring, supervision, and encourage-ment. Select a spot to keep backpacks and lunch boxes. Designate a place for your children to put their school belongings and a place to put important notices and information sent home for you to see. Explain that emptying their backpack each evening is their responsibility, even for young children. Freeze a few easy dinners. It will be much easier on you if you have dinner prepared so that meal preparation will not add to household tensions during the first week of school.

THE FIRST WEEK Some helpful suggestions for the first week of school include the following: Clear your own schedule. To the extent possible, postpone business trips, volunteer meetings, and extra projects. You want to be free to help your children acclimate to the school routine and overcome the confusion or anxiety that many children experience at the start of a new school year. Providing calming, reassuring messages to your children may help them keep the stress manageable. Make lunches the night before school. Older children should help or make their own. Give them the option to buy

lunch in school if they prefer and finances permit. Set alarm clocks. Have school-age children set their own alarm clocks. Praise them for paying attention to morning schedules and being ready for bus pickups. Leave plenty of extra time. Make sure your children have plenty of time to get up, eat breakfast, and get to school. For very young children taking the bus, pin to their shirt or backpack an index card with pertinent information, including their teacher’s name and bus number, as well as your daytime contact information.

School Starts Soon. Is Your Child Fully Vaccinated? WRITTEN BY: Care Resource

other and each other’s children by vaccinating our own family members.” It is important for children to be treated by pediatricians in an environment that is equipped to meet the needs of children. Your family’s pediatrician is an important partner in keeping your child happy and healthy, from birth through adolescence. With offices conveniently located throughout South Florida, where your family lives, works and plays, Care Resource’s pediatric services are right for you.

N

o matter what grade your child is about to enter, there’s the yearly back-to-school checklist of to-dos like shopping for school supplies, filling out permission forms and, of course, scheduling your child’s pediatric visit at Care Resource. The back-to-school season is a convenient time for putting the exam on your family’s schedule and make sure that your school-age children, from preschoolers to college students, receive their vaccines. During the month of July, new clients without Health Insurance can receive a free comprehensive check-up and their required vaccinations for school including, but not limited to, vaccinations for polio; chicken-pox; Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR); and DTap and Tdap (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis). New clients can also receive a NEW back-to-school backpack. To redeem this promotion, one MUST first make an appointment.

To make an appointment, call 305-576-1234 EXT: 470 (English) and 471 (Spanish). According to Alicia FernandezGarcia, MD, pediatrician with Care Resource, “Make sure your children are up-to-date on vaccines before sending them back to school. Schoolage children, from preschoolers to middle schoolers and college students, need vaccines. Making sure that children of all ages receive all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things you can do as a parent to ensure your children’s long-term health—as well as the health of friends, classmates, and others in your community. If children aren’t vaccinated, they can spread disease to other children who are too young to be vaccinated or to people with weakened immune systems. This could result in long-term complications and even death for these vulnerable people. We all have a public health commitment to our communities to protect each

the kiddos kid reporter

Reed Alexander, American Kid Actor & Healthy Living Advocate WRITTEN BY: Juli McAndles

Reed is best known for his performance in Nickelodeon’s iCarly and Sam & Cat, where he played Nevel Papperman. He also appeared in Will & Grace, Ace Ventura, and Jr.: Pet Detective.

D

uring this year’s South Beach Wine and Food Festival, Kiddos Magazine had the opportunity to get to know Reed a little better at the Fun and Fit as a Family event. We found out what inspired him to jump into acting and how he got his start in show business. Our Kiddos Kid Reporter also found out about his healthy living advocacy, like working with Michelle Obama on her Let’s Move! Campaign, and how he comes up with those recipes on both his website and his book KewlBites. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Can you tell me a little bit more about your career as an actor? Reed Alexander: Yeah, well for 7 years, of course, I’ve been on Nickelodeon on two shows there— iCarly and Sam and Cat being the other, with Ariana Grande and some other great people. Now I’m on a new show, which is great. I started out in acting when I was 8 years old. I’m actually from Florida—I’m from Boca Raton; that’s where I was born and grew up. I went to a school called Pinecrest and I was in the drama club and around 7 or 8 years old I became interested in acting and doing school

plays. I remember saying to my parents, “Oh my God, I really want to do this full time and get out to L.A. and there are all these great opportunities in California.” Eventually we figured it out and I went out to L.A. for like 8 days and I met an agent and a manager and got set-up with a team and we thought, “okay we’ll try it as an after-school activity.” Then it really started to consume my life and I started acting on some TV shows and on NBC a show called Will & Grace, and then films and some commercials, and then eventually ended up at Nickelodeon, and I’ve just been having the best time since then. So I love acting; very fun.

The Kiddos Kid Reporter: How did you get involved in eating healthy and doing exercise? Reed Alexander: How did I get involved in eating healthy is a good question. I was working on Nick and spending really long days on set on iCarly, living on California time in Los Angeles and I wasn’t happy with how I felt. I would look in the mirror a lot and think I didn’t like how I looked. I knew that growing up, I’ve always liked food and travel. That’s been very fun for me, exploring another culture or place through food—what do people like to eat here? What gets them excited? I never really cooked

The Kiddos Kid Reporter: You met the President and Michelle Obama. Can you tell me a little more about the Let’s Move! campaign?

at home but I liked watching cooking on TV. I was always very drawn like a magnet to anything edible. And I’m always hungry! But I figured that maybe there’s a way that I can reconnect with feeling good, that I can get healthier, that I can lose some of this weight, that I can start exercising, but really focus on the food side and fitness as well. I thought, well, if I get in the kitchen I’m just going to try some easy dishes and see what happens because there’s nothing out there from a kid’s point of view. It was all adult and diets and I didn’t really want to do that. So I just started out playing with pizza or apple pie and thinking these are some of my favorites. I love chocolate, dumplings, and Chinese food. Can I cook some of it and use healthier ingredients so I still get the great taste but it’s a little bit better for me? And I figured this out over a process of about 6 months and I lost some weight—about 15 pounds. I learned along the way, having read and written tips and ideas. I thought well if it worked for me, maybe I can share this with other kids and I created a website called KewlBites.

Reed Alexander: Yeah, Let’s Move! The Obamas are great! You know, the President is a really nice guy and Michelle gives everyone really big hugs and she’s been on Nickelodeon and she’s been on iCarly, which is amazing. So she’s a great first lady and she’s also a great actress! But she’s very passionate about this whole conversation on healthy eating. They do great work at the Whitehouse; they encourage kids to eat healthfully, and take health into their own hands, and exercise in their local communities, and it’s very impressive. She’s been at events and we’ve been able to work together on the Olympics and the Kids’ State Dinner, which is cool. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What advice would you give to kids to grow strong and healthy? Reed Alexander: Good question! I would say take it one step at a time. I think people get overwhelmed and so intimidated by this idea of living healthy—how am I going to do it? What should I eat? What should I cook? Easy steps. Maybe one day you cut out all white flour and refined grains. Do some fun exercises with friends; go walk your dog; invite a friend to take a jog around the neighborhood, go to the beach. One really fun thing if you’re interested in cooking is to make a theme night every week with your parents. If you don’t have time five nights a week to

make dinner, maybe Sunday you make Chinese, or you have taco night, quesadillas or Italian meatballs and spaghetti, whatever it is. And go to the grocery store as a family—everybody picks something; everybody has a job in the kitchen and can cook together. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Can you describe Reed Alexander in three different words? Reed Alexander: Reed Alexander in three different words?! Fun, crazy… and…travel-obsessed! That’s me, I love getting on a plane and seeing where I end up, you know? Nice mixture there and probably all true! k

Descends from the sky and into the BB&T center in sunrise, Florida!

A

dormant volcano, a mystical forest, and an ancient prophecy... the adventure of Icarus begins when Varekai, Cirque du Soleil’s latest arena touring production, descends from the sky and into the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, for fifteen performances – August 12-23, 2015! Ticket prices range from $40 – $100 (subject to change). Advance tickets for Varekai are available now online exclusively to Cirque Club members. Cirque Club membership is free and benefits include access to advance tickets, special offers and exclusive behind the scenes information. To join, go to cirqueclub.com. Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world — a world where something else is possible, a world called Varekai. The story of Varekai begins as Icarus,

a solitary young man, falls from the sky and lands in a lush, wonderous world called Varekai. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest — a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures — Icarus takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. At the edge of time, in a place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind. The word Varekai (pronounced ver•ay•’kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies the universal wanderers. Directed by Dominic Champagne, this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai. k

Learning skills take time and repetition. Encourage your children to be patient, attentive, and positive.

Prepare for after school. Review with your children what to do if they get home after school and you are not there. Be very specific, particularly with young children. Put a note card in their backpacks with the name(s) and number(s) of a neighbor who is home during the day as well as a number where you can be reached. If you have not already done so, have your children meet neighbor contacts to reaffirm the backup support in person. Review your children’s schoolbooks. Talk about what your children will be learning during the year. Share your enthusiasm for the subjects and your confidence in your children’s ability to master the content. Learning skills take time and repetition. Encourage your children to be patient, attentive, and positive. Send a brief note to your children’s teachers. Let the teachers know that you are interested in getting regular feedback on how and what your children are doing in school. Be sure to attend back-to-school night and introduce yourself to the teachers. Find out how they like to communicate with parents (e.g., through notes, e-mail, or phone calls). Convey a sincere desire to be a partner with your children’s teachers to enhance their learning experience. Familiarize yourself with the other school professionals. Learn their roles and how best to access their help if you need them. This can include the principal and front office personnel, school psychologist, counselor, and social worker, reading specialist, speech therapist, school nurse, and after-school activities coordinator. k

Miami Youth Ballet

Instilling Discipline Of The Body And Mind WRITTEN BY: Yanis Pikieris

F

ounded and directed by international ballet stars Marielena Mencia and Yanis Pikieris, Miami Youth Ballet’s mission is to create opportunities for local young artists, to be mentored, grow and present their work for the enjoyment and cultural enhancement of our community. Ms. Mencia and Mr. Pikieris’ philosophy and goals for each student include: to instill discipline of the body and mind, to

strive for perseverance, and to learn to love, respect and enjoy dance as an art form, whether or not a career is chosen. “The study of dance is extremely valuable not only for its physical benefits but also for emotional maturity, social awareness and cognitive development” says Ms. Mencia. Staffed by professional teachers with years of experience, Miami Youth Ballet is committed to

presenting various productions at the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center. These include “The Nutcracker”, “The Carnival of the Animals”, “Dance Creative” a Choreographic Showcase with Master Classes and an annual Spring Concert. MYB’s programs are designed to provide a fun and educational experience for all. In “Dance Creative”, students participate in the creative process of new works developed

about social issues of conservation and protection of our endangered species.

They learn the skills and behavior necessary to successfully be a contributing part of a new creation. In Mr. Pikieris’ words: “From the initial step to the final moment when it all comes together for the first time, there is something very unique about being part of an original creation; it is to be one in the conception of a work of art that did not exist before”. Another production, the “Carnival of the Animals” brings students into the world of dance, in a manner that appeals to their senses and their generation. It is an original story ballet with a dual mission; entertainment and education. It emphasizes the importance of caring for our planet’s fauna and flora and leads students into discussion

“The opportunity to perform for an audience on stage is an invaluable growing experience”, says Mr. Pikieris. “Present times in dance require artists to be extremely versatile. We emphasize classicism in its traditional form, while at the same time encourage our students to study different styles. It’s important to work towards a broader range of possibilities”. MYB offers an array of dance curriculums including Ballet, Pointe, Variations, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, Turns & Jumps, Stretch & Strengthening, Teen Ballet and Creative Movement. k

Miami-Dade Public Library System steps up literacy by reaching out to children at an early age with Jumpstart WRITTEN BY: Jack Varela

Jump Start’s primary goal is to bring the joy of reading to children

Jump Start is located at the

subjects which are sent all over the county.

T

he Miami-Dade Public Library System has been stepping up its efforts to reach out to children at an early age through its early literacy program. The program called Jump Start reaches out to preschools, kindergartens, and childcare centers via theme-related story time kits within the library’s taxing district. The program is a first-step toward including children with whom the library has little or no contact, while at the same time assisting the adults with whom the children do have contact, in providing access to the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s many resources. Thus, the children are given a “jump start” on their way to

28

kiddos | August • September 2015

becoming literate adults because they will have an association with books and the library that is positive, pleasurable, and long-lasting. This year the USA Today released a study by Central Connecticut State University of the top-10 Most Literate Cities. The study ranks cities based on data for 6 key indicators of their citizens’ use of literacy: booksellers, educational attainment, Internet resources, library resources, newspaper circulation, and periodical publishing resources. Ten years ago, Miami ranked in the high 20’s. Public libraries can play a pivotal role in changing this outcome.

Jump Start’s main goal is to bring the joy of reading to children. It accomplishes this by creating multiple story programs for children. The kits serve two age groups; babies/ toddlers and preschoolers/ kindergarteners. Theme-related kit materials include 10 books, a puppet, a music CD, a flannel board story, a finger play sheet, and an educational toy. They are selected by literary standards, age, muscle development, and level of interest. They are then gathered into kits for easy-handling. Each kit contains enough variety of materials for either 15 or 30 minute daily story times.

Exposing babies, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarteners to the joys of reading is important to the childrens development. Jump Start is located at the North Dade Regional Library and houses over 80 subjects which are sent all over the county. Facilities may register for the program by contacting Jump Start at 305-375-4116. k

The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS), a recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, serves as a community center and learning place where the Miami-Dade community meets to exchange ideas, learn, share, and create. The Library strives to ensure that all residents, regardless of socioeconomics, will be enriched through access to materials, technology, art and culture, and programs so that they may develop the skills they need to create and produce innovations for the 21st century. Through its 48 locations, bookmobiles, special services, website (www.mdpls.org), and MDPLS iLibrary app, the library proudly serves more than 7 million annual visitors. In the more than 40 years of serving the community, the MDPLS continues to experience tremendous change and growth, evolving with the technological needs and requirements of its diverse community.
