School Safety Starts On The Bus SOURCE: Propane Education & Research Council
A
lthough a great deal of attention focuses on safety at school, for millions of kids the school day starts on the bus. More than half of America’s school children ride the bus, according to the National Association of Pupil Transportation, and school buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school.
Getting Ready for School
Walking to the Bus Stop
• Have your children put everything

or encourage children to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.
Still, there are steps you can take as a parent to make the experience even safer. NAPT offers these tips to help teach your child to be safe at the bus stop and as they get on and off the bus.
• Make sure children leave home on time so they can arrive at the bus stop before it is due, ideally at least five minutes early. Running after or in front of a bus is dangerous.
• Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out of the street. If you must walk in the street, walk single-file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you can.
• Stop and look left, right and then left again anytime you must cross a street. Do

Cell phones and other electronic devices are often permitted on the school bus as long as: the same thing at driveways and alleys. Exaggerate your head turns and narrate your actions so your child knows you are looking left, right and left.
At the Bus Stop • Have children wait in a location where

Playing with balls or other toys that could roll into the street is also dangerous.

Getting On and Off the Bus • Warn children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.

behavior, and many districts have reported fewer disciplinary issues as a result. Using propane also helps reduce children’s exposure to potentially harmful particulate matter found in diesel exhaust, which some studies show may escalate breathing-related issues and aggravate asthma. Many students, including those in wheelchairs who enter from the back of the bus, wait at stops near where their bus’ tailpipe will be. With propane, students no longer have to wait in the “cloud of black smoke” from diesel exhaust. What’s more, propane-powered school buses cost less to operate than diesel buses. This allows school districts to

Teaching kids school bus safety is one way to protect them on the ride to and from school. However, school districts can take additional steps to make the bus safe: by switching from diesel buses to an alternative fuel like propane. School buses powered by the alternative fuel offer numerous safety advantages. Propane school buses are quieter than diesel buses, making it easier for drivers to hear inside and outside the bus. This can have a direct impact on student

let them stop. Overeating is one of the major reasons we get too many calories.
7. Encourage kids to “eat their colors.” This game works well with younger kids. Food that’s bland in color often lacks nutrients. Eating a variety of brightly colored foods provides more nutrients in greater variety.
8. Don’t cut out treats altogether.
W
hen you get home from a long day at work, the last thing you want to do is start a war over broccoli at the dinner table. This is why it is so easy to fall into the trap of making mac-n-cheese or ordering a pizza. It keeps you out of an “eat your vegetables” fight. The good news is, getting a picky eater to eat a nutritious meal doesn’t have to be a battle. In fact, implementing healthy habits early in life, will bring long-term health benefits. Studies show that children who eat healthy foods and get daily physical activity have: fewer school absences, higher academic achievement, higher self-esteem, and fewer behavioral problems. Here are some tips for dealing with a picky eater:
1. Introduce healthier elements in foods they already like. For example, offer blueberry pancakes, carrot muffins, fruit slices over a favorite cereal, chunks of bell pepper in a potato salad, or shredded veggies over rice.
2. Include them in the food prep. By getting them involved in grocery shopping and food preparation, they
10
kiddos | February • March 2016
feel some ownership over the meal, and may be more likely to eat it.
3. Don’t buy unhealthy foods. Out of sight, out of mind. If the chips and cookies are not around, your kids can’t eat them. They may resist at first, but when they get hungry, they’ll start munching on the carrot sticks. Keep healthy foods on hand — offer them 100% juice instead of sodas or other sugary drinks, and a bag of sliced apples instead of chips.
Think moderation. A scoop of ice cream or a serving of Oreo cookies is all right occasionally. If you cut out all the goodies, your kids will be more likely to overeat when they do get them. Make sure to moderate the treat consumption.
9. Eat at the dinner table. Eating in front of the TV is distracting, and kids may not notice that they’re full because they’re wrapped up in the show. Eating as a family is a great time to catch up on each other’s day.
10. Be a good role model. The best way to influence kids is by example. Don’t expect them to eat spinach if you won’t touch it. k
4. Schedule snack time. Most kids like routine. If your kids know they will only get food at certain times, they’ll eat what they get when they get it. Try to have snacks that incorporate two food groups. For example, offer cheese and wholegrain crackers or apple slices with low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese.
5. Have healthy finger foods available. Kids like to pick up foods, so give them foods they can handle. Fruit and veggie chunks (raw or cooked) are great finger-food options.
6. Retract the “clean your plate” rule. Kids know when they’re full, so

Sweet Surprises
W
ith the holidays quickly approaching, now is a great time to revisit, reconsider, revamp and sweeten the pot on the traditions we hold near and dear to us. Nothing says “I love you” and “you’re important to me” more than a thoughtful and unexpected surprise... in their drawers, on their egg hunt, or in a jar! Love Notes Abound Shower your family with love and adoration by slipping sweet love notes around the house! You can use them to show your gratitude, express your feelings, or share positive affirmations with your loved ones. Love notes are such a special surprise and are so much fun to receive. In today’s modern family, everyone is always on the go, go, go! Love notes are a creative way to let everyone know they’re thought of and loved unconditionally, always. They’re a nice way to bring everyone into the present moment and forget about the hustle bustle for just a moment. It’s a win-win for both the giver and receiver: everyone gets to feel good. The New Hide-and-Seek Not only is this a great surprise to receive, it’s super fun to create and hide the notes! Sprinkle a few love notes in your hubby’s sock drawer or your kids’ backpacks. The sky is the limit on this game! Tape pictures and notes inside cabinets. Stick an “I love you” heart in the fridge for someone to find. You can be really creative with this new tradition. Few notes left behind without being found? Great! They’ll make someone’s day in the future. eggs. Your kids will never expect to receive one! This is a creative way to let your kids know you love them and how special they are to you. Tell them how proud you are to be theirs. How smart, funny, cute and lovable you find them to be! Family Coupon Book
Have everyone fill the jar with not about what makes each of you special, how much you love one another, and all the things you’re grateful for. Open the jar each year on Easter and drop in a few more notes! It’s always nice to be reminded of how special you are to your family.
There are many versions of the Coupon Book out there. For the family, create a book where everyone gets to pick out something special to them. Give away some free hugs, date nights (either mom and dad alone, or a date night with parent and child), stay up late nights and maybe even a toy surprise! Massages for mom or dad, movie nights for the whole family and crafts for the kids. Utilize those things you know are personal, important or special to your family.
These are just a few ways to show your family how much love there is between you all. The possibilities of different ideas and ways to play with love notes are endless. Have some fun! And make it a new tradition in your family. You can take turns hiding notes, writing notes and finding notes! Just remember...the whole point is to feel good and share love! There are no rules, no restrictions and no limit to your creativity. k
Gratitude Jar Sometimes families make Gratitude Jars and open them up for the New Year, or pop one out to read randomly as they need a lift-me-up. With Easter and spring symbolizing rebirth and renewal of life, it’s the perfect time to create your gratitude jar and begin a ritual with your family.

Florida Department of Transportation Launches “Drive Safe” Aggressive Driving Awareness Campaign Local Organizations Partner to Promote Safety Message in Miami-Dade, Monroe Counties
T
he Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is announcing the launch of the “Drive Safe” campaign. The campaign serves to inform drivers in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties of the risks of aggressive driving.
“Aggressive driving accounts for more than half of all traffic fatalities,” said FDOT District Six Secretary Gus Pego. “It is a serious problem that affects all motorists in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. We want to make the public aware of ways to prevent or avoid these dangerous activities.”
The campaign, which targets all drivers, will run from February through April and includes extensive community educational outreach and law enforcement operations throughout the region. FDOT has joined forces with numerous law enforcement agencies, educational institutions and other partner organizations to promote the “Drive Safe” message.
In Florida, aggressive driving is exhibited by the combination of two or more of the following actions: Failure to yield right-of-way; improper lane change; improper passing; following too closely; disregarding traffic control; and speeding. k

Naturally Clean for Spring A surprising way to make spring cleaning simple Source: Four Monks

iping away the grime of winter doesn’t have to mean launching an attack with dangerous chemicals. As you tackle this year’s spring cleaning chores, take a note from Mother Nature and rely on the cleaning power of a surprisingly effective natural product: vinegar. During the last century, vinegar has become increasingly recognized as a low cost and eco-friendly household product. From cooking and canning, to cleaning items i ndoors and out, homeowners are discovering that this eco-friendly, acetic liquid is as versatile as it is useful. “Cleaning with vinegar has always been an effective way to banish dirt and grime in kitchens, bathrooms, the garage and the outdoors,” said Mike Smith, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Mizkan Americas, the makers of Four Monks Cleaning Vinegar.

In the Bathroom The fizzing combo of vinegar and baking soda can unclog and remove odor from a tub drain. Pour half a cup of baking soda in the drain, then follow with two cups of hot vinegar. Immediately plug the drain with a rag to keep the bubbles contained for 10 minutes. Rinse by pouring a kettle of boiling hot water down the drain.
•
• Clean your ice/water dispenser by running vinegar through the system. Flush the vinegar out by running water through the system for 30-60 seconds.
• Rid your dishwasher of mineral buildup by pouring half a cup of vinegar into the reservoir and running an empty cycle. You can also use vinegar in the dishwasher instead of another glass cleaner to keep your glassware sparkling.
• Renew sponges and dishrags by placing them in just enough water to cover them. Then add one-fourth cup of vinegar and let them soak overnight.
• Remove dark stains on an aluminum pot by boiling two cups of vinegar. For stained and smelly plastic food containers and lunchboxes, wipe them with a cloth dampened with vinegar.

he has launched over the years and on the upcoming “Drive Safe” Campaign, which will run from February through June. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: Carlos, what are the most important initiatives you have done for FDOT District Six and what were the results?
Carlos Sarmiento: The FDOT takes traffic safety very seriously. We’ve done a number of campaigns and initiatives over the years that reached millions of people in the State of Florida. For instance, we’ve done “Buckle Up Florida” for safety belts, “Alert Today Alive Tomorrow” for bike and pedestrian safety, “Put It Down”

for distracted driving, and soon we will be launching “Drive Safe” for aggressive driving. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What are the consequences if you Text and Drive? Carlos Sarmiento: Good question. Texting and driving is very dangerous - you are already taking your eyes off the road and your hands off the wheel when you’re reading or sending a text. We’re encouraging everybody not to do that so that you as a driver or as a passenger could be safe. The Kiddos Kid Reporter: FDOT is launching the new campaign “Drive Safe”. Can you tell me more about it? Carlos Sarmiento: As you know in South Florida, aggressive driving is a prevalent issue so we’re trying to raise awareness by working with different agencies including law enforcement agencies to address the dangers of aggressive driving.
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: How can drivers avoid accidents? Carlos Sarmiento: You want to be a kind driver and you want to yield to other merging traffic. You definitely want to use your signals when you’re turning, lower your speed, and be aware of your surroundings.
The Kiddos Kid Reporter: What advice will you give to our community? Carlos Sarmiento: To pay attention to the road, to your behavior, and to lead by example. Again, keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel, and be safe. k

Sports, Kids & Concussion WRITTEN BY: University of Miami Health System
oncussion is one of the hottest health topics being discussed by parents. Many moms and dads are even wondering if they should take their children out of sports to protect them from concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive, degenerative brain disease suffered by those who’ve had a significant number of concussions, detailed in the movie “Concussion.” Not so fast, say experts at UHealth – the University of Miami Health System. According to the research and clinical care being performed by doctors and researchers at UHealth, and other academic and scientific
institutions, evidence indicates that the benefits of sports, including contact sports like football, far outweigh any risk of concussion or CTE. Because CTE has only been shown after a significant number of repeated head trauma, the risk for CTE is likely limited to some professional athletes and military personnel, not the average student athlete or weekend warrior. The theory that youth sports can lead to CTE is far from proven, and the good that comes from athletics far outweighs the risk of a possible concussion or the much less likely CTE. Youth sports have a number of

benefits, including physical fitness, discipline, time management and teamwork skills that have a positive impact long after the season ends. And while sports are among the most common causes of concussions, doctors at UHealth are taking steps on the field and in the clinic to keep children and young adults playing organized sports. UHealth researchers are looking at new techniques to diagnose and treat concussion more promptly and effectively. This includes a pair of goggles that can potentially diagnose concussions from the sidelines of a game and getting athletic trainers on site for every

Miami-Dade County public high school athletic function. And UHealth’s multi-disciplinary concussion clinic, with state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatments and trained neurologic experts, stands ready in case your child does suffer a concussion. Keeping your child on the field does not mean you should ignore concussions. Instead, you can protect your child by:
• Making sure the coach or someone on his or her staff has knowledge and experience about concussions in contact sports.
• Educating yourself and your child about the signs and symptoms of head injury.
• Seeking medical care from a concussion expert if your child suffers a head injury or shows signs of a
head injury – even after a minor head impact.
• Working with concussion experts, your child and the coach to determine when your child should return to play. Concern is appropriate, but don’t let fear keep your child on the sidelines. The value and enjoyment of sports are an important part of growing up. k

Is Your Child Doing The Right Thing? SOURCE: Do The Right Thing Miami
A not-for-profit dedicated to recognizing and rewarding young people in our community for positive behavior, accomplishments, and good deeds in conjunction with local law enforcement
T
he Do The Right Thing Program was born in 1990 during a Miami Police Department awards ceremony when a teenager was recognized by the chief of police for turning in a loaded gun found at his school. Community volunteers, who witnessed the impact the positive recognition had on this teenager, decided to join forces with the Miami Police Department and develop an on-going recognition program for students. The purpose of Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. (DTRT) is to recognize and reward Miami youths for their exemplary behavior, accomplishments, and good deeds through a unique partnership with the City of Miami Police Department, the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, and other participating law enforcement agencies in Miami-Dade. The DTRT Awards Program distinguishes exceptional school-age children who choose to be drug and crime free, exhibit non-violent behavior, do well in school, make a difference in their communities, and demonstrate turnaround behavior. Each month of the school year, parents, police officers, teachers, and other adults nominate up to 1,000 children for “doing the right thing.” A selection committee reviews the nominations and selects ten finalists for the month who are honored at a ceremony at police headquarters in downtown Miami.

DTRT Goals
• To reinforce socially desirable behavior among young people
• To demonstrate that “good kids” are newsworthy
• To foster positive relations between the police department and youths • To develop a network of Do The Right Thing chapters which will benefit our youth nationwide. Currently, Do The Right Thing has 59 chapters in the United States and four abroad in England and Germany. All chapters are patterned after the Miami-Dade County initiative which serves school-age youths through an online nomination process in conjunction with the local public

school system as well as private schools. Students who are nominated for “doing the right thing” are awarded DTRT t-shirts, bumper stickers, free pizzas from Papa John’s, certificates of recognition, and letters of congratulations signed by the chief of police. Ten top winners are honored monthly at police headquarters by the chief of police and awarded with prizes ranging from mini-tablets and plaques to trips to Washington, D.C. Nominations run the gamut from turning in a dollar found on the playground to turning in a loaded gun found on school grounds. Do The Right Thing’s national headquarters are located at the City of Miami Police Department in downtown
Miami. The program charges a small, one-time start up fee of $500 to any police agency interested in forming a chapter which covers the rights to the trademarked name and logo as well training materials and staff consultation to set up the program in other communities nationwide. “Do The Right Thing hopes to expand its network of chapters exponentially as police departments nationwide are seeking ways to mend community relations starting with our youths,” says Executive Director Jodi Atkison. Parents are also encouraged to nominate their children online if they are caught “doing the right thing!” k
