Ready, Set, Camp!

Finding the Right Camp for Your Child WRITTEN BY: American Camp Association

ou are considering a summer camp, but how to choose? There’s a camp that is ideally suited for every child, providing a summer of growth and fun whether your child attends a day or overnight camp, a specialized or traditional camp. With a little help from the camp professionals at the American Camp Association, here’s some sound advice that helps parents sort through the choices and benefits that camp delivers. As spring approaches, parents and children can look forward to planning for the future—a future that includes the opportunities for exploration and discovery that arrives with summer camp. How to Decide When Your Child is Ready for Camp Children are ready for new experiences at different stages. Parents know their children best and these questions can help gauge whether this is the summer your child will start camp. What is your child’s age, and what is your perception of his or her readiness level? Children under 7 who have not had overnight experiences may do better with a day camp as their first camp experience. If you think your child might not be ready for an

8

kiddos | April • May 2016

overnight camp experience, consider the day camp experience to prepare him or her for future overnight camp. How did your child become interested in camp? Does your child talk about camp on a sustained basis? How much persuasion is necessary from you? Has your child had positive overnight experiences away from home? Visiting relatives or friends? Were these separations easy or difficult? What does your child expect to do at camp? Learning about the camp experience ahead of time allows you to create positive expectations.

Are you able to share consistent and positive messages about camp? Your confidence in a positive experience will be contagious. A Camp for Every Child—The Perfect Fit Camp can last for just a few days or stretch to all summer long. It’s well worth the trouble to investigate the variety of choices offered by camps before your child packs a backpack. These questions help you consider the options.

Near or Far? Where do you want your child to go to camp? Locally or far away? While each camp experience has something unique to offer your child, this is an opportunity for families to assess what they value for their campers. Benefits of Camp Nearby

• Easier to evaluate and visit. • Friends and family are likely familiar with camp.

• Minimal travel costs. • Likely contact with classmates or children from same region. Benefits of Camp Far Away • More choices. • Different experiences, different geography, e.g., mountains or oceans—even different languages. • Promotes independence, particularly for early and late adolescent campers. • Diversity of campers. • Chance for family to visit and vacation at close of camp.

Boys Only, Girls Only, or Co-ed? Now may be the opportunity to explore the choices and benefits of all boys, all girls, or co-ed camps. Benefits of Single Sex Camps

• Breaking gender stereotypes—girls

Session Length Offers Another Choice Camps offer widely varying options to help parents and children reach their goals for summer fun and exploration. Talking with your child about the goals you both share helps determine which choice is right for you.

• • •

interact with women in position of authority and boys interact with men who act as nurturers. More opportunities to “be yourself” without impressing or competing with the opposite sex. Camp philosophy may be tuned into gender strengths and weaknesses. Brother or sister camps may share activities.

Benefits of Short Sessions (one-three weeks)

Benefits of Co-ed Camps

• First-time or younger campers have a

chance to learn new skills. • Bonds develop with other campers and staff. • Great exposure to camp experience with less expense. • Minimizes homesickness

Benefits of Longer Sessions (four-twelve weeks)

• •

• Strong sense of belonging to camp community.

and enrichment. Lifelong friendships Opportunities to contribute to camp culture.

interact with women in positions of authority and boys interact with men who act as nurturers. Mirrors and prepares campers for everyday living in a co-ed world. Allows families with a boy and a girl to attend the same camp. Offers diverse points of view. Breaks through rigid divisions set up in school when campers participate in equal footing.

A Camp for Every Child—Traditional, Specialty, and Special Needs Choices abound when it comes to camp programs. One may highlight a wide variety of activities geared to

campers of all ages and skill levels, others, because of their setting and expertise, may concentrate on one or two activities while providing traditional activities as well. Parents of children with special needs are pleased to learn about the range of camp activities that help kids be kids first. Benefits of Traditional Camps

• Wide variety of activities. • Chance for campers to try new activities. • Exposure to more campers and staff at varying activities. Benefits of Specialty Camps

• One or two specialized activities (often combined with traditional offerings.)

• Expectation for increased proficiency during camping session.

• Deepens knowledge and skill in particular area of interest or ability. Benefits of Special Needs Camps Activities geared to campers’ abilities Knowledgeable staff with expertise to understand campers’ strengths and challenges Supportive and fun atmosphere to share with others. k For more information about child development and the camp experience, visit CampParents.org or call our toll-free number, 1-800-428-CAMP (2267). What You Should Know About Lead Poisoning WRITTEN BY: Andrew Sinder, MD, FAAP - Pediatric Associates

D

id you know that for every point above a measurement of 5 on your child’s blood lead test, he or she will have a decrease in the IQ of about 2-4 points? Lead poisoning has direct effects on your child’s kidneys, blood, bones and brain. Because a child’s brain is still developing, the effects are especially serious and potentially permanent. Lead can also affect the unborn fetus in exposed pregnant mothers. Lead poisoning has been linked to developmental delays, speech problems, behavior problems, and aggression. Most lead poisoning is due to chronic, repeated exposure to this toxin. The lead sources in the United States are largely due to lead in paint and gasoline, as well as lead in imported products used by our children. The addition of lead to household paint was not banned until 1970 and fully removed until 1978. The lead in gasoline was not regulated and reduced until 1973. And in 1991, the CDC finally created a plan to detect and fight the problem. Risk factors in the U.S. include:

• Children who live in or regularly visit homes built before 1978

• Children who live with someone who

has a job or a hobby that may involve lead, such as building renovation or repair, plumbing, or working with automobile batteries or radiators. Children living in a designated high-risk area (mostly urban)

How does the lead get into our system? Old water pipes may have lead, mainly from lead soldering, that gets into drinking water. For older homes with leaded paint, the lead can be in the dust that settles in your house and in the dirt that surrounds your house.

10

Lead poisoning has been linked to developmental delays.

Remodeling can actually increase the exposure for a period of time. Not only do children get this dirt and dust on their hands and then in their mouths, but also their bodies absorb it much easier than adults. Other sources include some vinyl mini blinds, some imported toys, food stored in glazed ceramics, and some folk remedies, such as greta and azarcon, which are used by some to treat an upset stomach.

How is lead poisoning treated, and how do I prevent it?

How can you tell if your child has been exposed?

• Teach your children not to put their

Since most lead poisoning is chronic exposure, there are no obvious symptoms. For this reason, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening with a questionnaire from age 6 months to 6 years and testing those found to have risk factors. Most doctors will test all children at age 12 months and 24 months, although some do not test if there are no risk factors. Acute lead poisoning, which is rare, may present with pain and weakness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, anemia, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Even with early treatment, chronic lead poisoning effects are likely.

Severe acute lead poisoning is treated in the hospital with chelation, a treatment that removes it from the body. But this treatment is uncommonly needed. The mainstay of treatment is identification of those at risk of chronic poisoning and reducing exposure:

• Make sure your child practices good handwashing.

• Children should eat plenty of calcium and iron.

hands in their mouths. With continued surveillance, routine testing, and reduction in environmental exposures, we can continue to eliminate this threat to our children. k

If you are concerned about lead in your water, commercial testing kits are available at home improvement stores for about $10.

tips

Serve Your Flock Safe Eggs

P

SOURCE: Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply

urchasing a dozen eggs offers nearly unlimited preparation possibilities. Enjoying any egg dish, however, starts with these four tips for purchasing safe eggs: 1. Always purchase eggs from a refrigerated case. 2. Open the carton and make sure there are no visible cracks or leaking eggs. 3. Check the short end of the carton for the date the eggs were packed as well as an expiration or sell by date to make sure the eggs are fresh. 4. Look for the United States Department of Agriculture grade shield or mark. Safety Tips to Protect Your Flock Once purchased, it’s also important to follow these safe food handling practices to ensure egg safety and quality.

• Keep eggs in the coldest part of the refrigerator, not the door. Storing them in the refrigerator

door could result in temperature fluctuations that can lead to bacteria growth.

• Eggs may be refrigerated three to five weeks at home. The sell-by date will usually expire during that time, but the eggs are safe to use for four to five weeks beyond the expiration date as long are they are kept in a refrigerator set at 40 F.

• Wash hands and utensils after coming into contact with eggs to avoid cross-contamination.

• Cook eggs thoroughly. For

scrambled eggs and similar dishes, cook until no visible liquid remains. Fried eggs should be cooked until the whites are completely set and the yolk is thickened but not hard. Serve eggs and dishes containing eggs promptly after cooking.

Does Hen Housing Affect Food Safety? The study compared flocks of egg-laying hens in three different types of housing systems:

conventional cage, enriched colony and cage-free systems. As consumers are becoming more interested in the type of environment in which animals are raised, the coalition elected to conduct research in order to develop science-based information to use in supporting informed decision-making. The research found that with proper management, eggs produced in any of the three different housing systems are safe and of comparable quality, but also accompany a variety of positive and negative aspects across other elements of sustainability. k

Celebrate the Little Things WRITTEN BY: Bright Horizons Family Solutions

T

here are very few experiences as universal and yet unique as being a parent. In today’s world, it’s difficult not to think about how we measure up to other parents whether they be our own, our friends and colleagues, or even the seemingly “perfect” parents we see in the media or down the street. We tend to put pressure on ourselves to be “the very best” parents all the time, when what we really need to keep in mind is that it’s the simple connections our children will remember and cherish. Mother’s Day is a perfect time to celebrate the little things we do with our children - the special moments and the magical experiences that often happen unexpectedly. Celebrate the Little Things on Mother’s Day Some of us are the kind of parents who bake birthday cakes in the shape of dinosaurs and turn the house into Jurassic Park for a party. Others are less inclined to the spectacular and want to plan birthday parties without the stress. Whichever kind of parent we are, a

14

kiddos | April • May 2016

happy childhood is made up of many small moments of caring, connecting, and spending time together. Mother’s Day is a perfect time to remind us of those important everyday moments and celebrate them. Usually when we think of celebrating Mother’s Day, we often jump to gift ideas for mom or children’s activities for Mother’s Day. But this year, celebrate all the wonderful things you already do with your children and appreciate the little things like spending quality time together. Children likely won’t remember the hours we spent preparing a special activity or the

expensive toys that we purchased. They will remember the bedtime stories that we read, the walks that we took, and the skills that they gleaned from working on an activity side-by-side together, such as: cooking with children, washing a car, or working in the garden. There are many lists of parenting books and websites with ideas to facilitate these parenting magic moments. Put aside those resources and celebrate all the wonderful things you already do. Here’s a list of a few little but important things parents do with children that should be celebrated on Mother’s Day.

Every family is unique, so be sure to add to this list or find inspiration on how to best spend time with your children.

• Creating weekly special times when you are totally focused on your child.

• Doing things that make your child feel special.

• Sharing activities that you both enjoy and keeping them up.

• Demonstrating or talking about your love, respect, and appreciation.

• Spending quality time together without electronic devices.

• Proudly hanging your child’s artwork and writing on walls or scanning it into the computer to share with friends and relatives.

• Asking your child to help you with a task.

• Having meaningful, spontaneous discussions.

• Offering hugs and kisses in the morning at bedtime and in-between. These are the little things that make parenting so special and worth celebrating on Mother’s Day. On Sunday, May 8th cherish the people in your life who make it so wonderful and interesting - your children and your own moms. From all of us we wish you a very happy Mother’s Day! k

How Green Is Your House? An eco-friendly approach to home care Source: Propane Education & Research Council

G

een r g O

L

iving an eco-friendly lifestyle starts at home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, residential use accounts for more than one-fifth of the nation’s total energy consumption. Adopting an earth-first, energy saving mindset will let you make adjustments around your home so that you can feel good about your family’s contributions to protect the environment. Green energy Improving your home’s energy efficiency is not only good for the planet, it’s good for your wallet. After all, wasted energy is money lost in monthly utility bills. Numerous factors influence a home’s energy efficiency, or lack thereof. Air leaks, outdated appliances or inefficient heating and cooling systems can all negatively impact your home’s energy usage. Structural improvements Correcting any structural issues can go a long way toward

16

kiddos | April • May 2016

making your home more efficient. Give your home a thorough inspection to identify and repair leaks and cracks around windows, doors and duct work. Remember that poorly sealed attics and basements are also common culprits of energy loss. Appliances and major systems Upgrading your appliances and temperature control systems also helps drive more efficient energy use throughout the house. Look for ENERGY STAR-certified products, which are designed to save energy without sacrificing on performance. Where possible, make purchases that will perform double duty, such as high-efficiency washing machines that can save on both energy and water usage. Fuel sources Choosing the right energy source can also help lessen your impact on the environment. For example, using propane-powered appliances in your home can significantly

reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to a recent study sponsored by the Propane Education & Research Council, propane-powered furnaces emit 73 percent fewer greenhouse gases than electricity. Similarly, propane-powered storage water heaters emit approximately 39 percent less greenhouse gas than electric storage models. Green upgrades Shopping smart to incorporate high-efficiency appliances and electronics into your home is just a first step. There are many other ways you can make such products even more sustainable:

• Rely on LED light bulbs, which use a fraction of the energy and last significantly longer than traditional bulbs.

• Use light timers to turn off lights when they aren’t needed.

• Make a habit of powering off lights and other electronics when you leave the room.

kiddos

• Set a programmable thermostat to adjust temperatures when you’re away from home.

• Wash only full loads of laundry, and use cold

water when possible.

• Air-dry dishes, rather than using the heated drying cycle of the dishwasher.

Recycle Like a Pro Living green isn’t just about saving energy. Sustainable living also means putting earth-friendly practices in place throughout your home, such as recycling. With these tips you can make recycling easier for the whole family.

• Establish collection bins to make it easy to gather all your recycling in one place. The number of bins you need depends on your city’s guidelines for sorting. If no sorting is required, a single bin will do. Otherwise, use different colored bins to make it simple to sort paper, aluminum, glass, etc.

• Most families find the kitchen is a primary source of recyclable goods. If space is at a premium, keep a smaller collection bin in the kitchen that can be easily transported to a sorting station in a larger area, such as the garage.

• Don’t forget to recycle in other rooms, too.

• Remember that recycling can also come in other forms, like donating unwanted clothing to charity or using leftover water to quench thirsty plants or freshen the dog’s bowl.

• Be sure to rinse away any food or liquid residue from containers to manage odors and keep your recycling area tidy and odor free.

• Maximize your bin space by compressing cans and bottles. k For more information about using propane and propane-powered appliances in your home, visit propane.com.

Solution: 2, 8, 12 (1=9, 3=4=10,5=11, 6=7).

Many common bathroom items, such as shampoo and soap bottles, and even cardboard toilet paper tubes, can be recycled.

Expressing Gratitude during National Teacher Appreciation Week

N

ational Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2 – 6, is the perfect occasion to personally thank teachers for their support and involvement in your child’s education throughout the year. Teachers play an indispensable role in a child’s development and success. As a matter of fact, teacher responsibilities go beyond the students’ academic achievements as they often encourage children to use their skills both inside and outside the classroom. They help children gain self-confidence and help strengthen their learning abilities through the use of creative methods.

How can you show gratitude to your child’s teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week?

Have your child give thank you messages to their teachers with cards, artwork, poems, posters, or videos.

Contribute classroom materials, such as paper, folders, bookmarks, stickers, and dry erase markers.

Fill a gift basket with the teacher’s favorite items.

Bring flowers or baked goods to the teachers’ lounge.

Donate new or lightly used books to the classroom.

Encourage your child to say some positive words to their teachers.

Kiddos Magazine would like to thank all of the hard-working educators for inspiring, guiding, and supporting our children every day. k

The Sink or Swim Project Together, Kids Can Make a Difference! WRITTEN BY: Roxane Timon

Is your child passionate about the environment or simply wants to be involved in the community? The Sink or Swim Project is a community educational program that educates, informs, and engages young generations on global warming, rising sea levels, and its impact on our coastal communities in South Florida and the Keys.

D

elaney Reynolds is the founder of The Sink or Swim Project and currently attends High School in Miami. Her frequent family trips to the ocean inspired Ms. Reynolds to create this project at a young age with the goal of educating the public on climate change and its threats to our future. She is actively speaking out about climate change through her web site blog, talks at schools, and media interviews. Earlier this year, Delaney was a presenter at the TEDxYouth@Miami event where she spoke about The Sink or Swim Project. TedxYouth are worldwide events where live speakers share their passions and ideas with kids. These events are designed

to empower and inspire the youth. Ms. Reynolds is also a published author and illustrator of three children’s books on ecological topics related to the wonders of No Name Key. The most recent is an adventure comic book, entitled “Where Did All The Polar Bears Go?” She earned a Certificate in Marine Biology from the University of Miami’s Summer Scholar’s Program, and is a graduate of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Training. The Sink or Swim Project focuses on the risks of global warming and sea level rise in South Florida as well as the solutions that Delaney’s generation must now undertake to prevent devastative results.

Whether you are in Elementary, Middle School, High School, or College, The Sink or Swim Project encourages everyone to unite and help solve the problems our planet and community encounter due to global warming and sea rise. The program offers classroom presentations where kids and teens have the chance to learn more about our planet and the threats it is facing. Through the use of various educational resources (videos, PowerPoint presentations, and hands on tools), the lectures provide everything kids need in order to learn about sea rise in an interactive and creative way. Delaney always encourages participants to discuss possible solutions to protect

our communities. The Sink or Swim Project has been so effective that National Geographic recently recorded one of Delaney’s presentations. The Sink or Swim Project recently went global as Delaney made a classroom presentation via Skype to a girls’ school in India. The students, while half a world apart, had the same concern and passions as Delaney. After the presentation, they were inspired to become involved in their community to seek solutions for the future. The Sink or Swim Project’s goals are to raise awareness on climate change and the sea level rise in South Florida, teach kids about sea rise using fun and innovative tools, and encourage people of all ages to find their voice and help protect our planet. Get involved! Together we can make a difference, but only if you get involved. The Sink or Swim Project is a great opportunity for

kids to be a part of the community. Delaney’s website, miamisearise.com, provides a “Kids Korner” section meant for kids who want to learn more and get involved. This includes a PowerPoint presentation for young children that overview sea level rise, crossword puzzles, coloring pages, and an interactive comic book. Participants can also make donations and sign up for The Sink or Swim Project blog on the website.

The Sink or Swim Project is already making an incredible difference and Delaney Reynolds hopes to share her passion for protecting our planet with many more kids and teens! Did You Know?

• 2015 was the warmest year on record in 136 years of scientific data

• By 2060, sea levels will rise at least two feet • By 2100, our children will live in a world where seas are at least 3 feet higher than today k

“We started small five years ago when we kicked of this program and had no idea it would morph into something enveloping such passion. The success of the program has allowed us greater access to all aspects of our community, which in turn made this year’s event, perhaps, our best to date.” said Arvi Balseiro, Cushman’s Head of School. The Cushman School has supported and coordinated this local TEDx event since 2010. While the team of curators is still tying up loose ends from this year’s February program at the Arsht Center, it won’t be long before they will be looking for submissions for the 2017 event. If your child is aged 6 – 25 and you think they may be interested in doing a TEDxYouth@

Miami talk, then get started now – it’s never too early to prepare. Curators will want to see or read an excerpt of the idea or experience your child wants to share. If chosen, the team at The Cushman School will work weekly with the students to help them hone and memorize their speech so it is performance-ready. k

If you would like to be informed when the next call for submissions goes out, email sherylrudnick@gmail.com.You can see this year’s TEDxYouth@Miami event at tedxyouthmiami.com

However, choosing the right dog is just the beginning. The first weeks after bringing home an adopted pet are critical. It’s a time to get to know one another and build a lifelong connection. Here are some steps to help ease the transition: Create a pet-friendly environment. Keep items that are unsafe, such as chemicals and certain house plants out of reach. Cords and objects that invite chewing also should be tucked away. If certain areas will be off limits, use baby gates to block them.

The stress of transitioning into a new household can lead to accidents, so keep this in mind and be sure to provide your new pet with lots of potty breaks, patience and instruction. Without knowing how your pet was trained, it can be difficult to predict how he will respond in his new environment. For example, he may be used to receiving treats for good behavior, while you prefer to reward with praise. Plan to be flexible, and soon you’ll come to a shared understanding. k
