The Power of

Forgiveness & Gratitude

O

WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

n holidays like Thanksgiving, we are much more conscious of the practice of “giving thanks.” But, did you know that forgiveness is not only the gateway to living an attitude of gratitude, but a practice that brings you and your family closer to each other…and closer to true and lasting happiness? Forgiveness is like a key that opens the door to your heart, lets love and light shine in, and allows gratitude to replace bitterness, wellbeing to replace dis-ease. Many are unaware that forgiveness is an act of selflove and care, and rarely has to do with other people. We do not have to condone the actions or words that hurt us in order to forgive. Through forgiveness, we can learn to

8

kiddos | October • November 2017

practice true, unconditional love and appreciation for ourselves, others, and the very life that supports us. What better way to “give thanks” than that? Forgiveness is one of the most powerful tools you can offer your children to ensure they lead a life of pure joy and full of blessings. Here are 5 practices or understandings

that will benefit you, as a parent, your children, and your family as a whole:

• Forgiveness is an inside job. Holding onto grudges or remaining angry or negativelycharged keeps us imprisoned in our own bodies and minds. Forgiveness is an inside job, and rarely has anything to do with the

people, places or things we don’t want to forgive or feel wronged by. True happiness, peace and freedom (let’s not forget health) come from letting go of the past and its power over you. This is a vital component of self-care and self-love that, when embodied, releases us from the bondage and blocks that keep us stuck. Teaching your children how to forgive, and why, sets them on a path with way less stress, anxiety and unhappiness into their adult lives.

• Love yourself enough to forgive. As mentioned, forgiveness is about loving ourselves enough to be well. Holding onto the pain of the past accumulates in our bodies and minds and eventually harms us and becomes illness. Love yourself enough to let go, forgive, and move on. Love yourself enough to know that you’re worth it. You deserve to show up today, to be happy and experience the beauty of life and your special family. Teach your children that they deserve true happiness; and that anger does not serve them or their well-being. Encourage them to love themselves enough to make the choice to let go of painful thoughts of the past. (Hint: holding on doesn’t prevent the pain, it keeps it active and close to home)

• Forgive easily, forgive often. Lead by example. Practice what you teach your children. Let upsets roll off your shoulders, and move on with peace and love as the driving force in your family. Offer forgiveness for mistakes made, or feelings hurt, and replace the habit of anger with that of understanding and compassion (and while you’re at it, offer apologies and acknowledgments when you may hurt others’ feelings, whether intentional or not, invoking an opportunity to receive forgiveness from them).

• Recognize the good. Being understanding and compassionate allows us to recognize that everyone is doing the best they can in any given moment. That includes your spouse and your children... and you! Be gentle with yourself and others. Wrongdoings are often a result of inner pain and turmoil. They’re really not personal. Be aware of this, and remember: every act is an act of love or a cry for love. Sometimes, when people, or our children, are suffering, they seek love but don’t know how to get it. Recognizing this and the good in others, and extending compassion, opens your heart and mind and allows you to forgive easily and often.

Teaching your children to recognize these lessons ensures that they will be resilient, caring and kind with others and themselves.

• Open your heart to Love and Gratitude. Compassion and understanding - opening your heart to see the good - are ways to practice “priming.” Priming is a conditioning that allows you to recognize, accept and receive the good life has to offer you (you’re being primed to notice and receive miracles!). Gratitude is an extension of priming. Letting go of all the baggage, and forgiving, allows us the space (think: declutter) to fill ourselves up with the good stuff. If we are focused on the negative, we may miss all the positive things right in front of us. But, instead, if we expect good feelings and good things to occur, we witness and allow the miracles to unfold before us. A grateful heart allows us to experience life in a new way; presently, gently and aware. Showing our children what gratitude is really about and how to practice it daily, (not just on Thanksgiving!) deepens the bond of family and brings everyone closer, more connected, in a purely loving way.

Teach your children that they deserve true happiness

Autumn & Food Allergy WRITTEN BY: Dr. Elena M. Ubals, M.D.

Some of these reactions can be very dangerous or even fatal. The person affected should seek the help of an allergy specialist to confirm the allergy through a blood test or a skin test. In addition, the person should avoid the food in question and have an adrenaline auto-injector to be used in case of an allergic reaction caused by accidental ingestion of such food.

S

ince autumn is the season for harvesting crops, it comes as no surprise that autumn is also the season for great celebrations, carnivals, and fairs to welcome abundance and prosperity with a large display of delicacies and treats. Nature softens and dresses up in golden hues to offer us a welldeserved gift for the year’s hard work. Autumn is also the season when family and friends gather around the table to savor and enjoy grandma’s recipes that meet the approval of our most demanding guests. For most of us no longer involved with farming cycles, these celebrations start with Halloween followed quickly by Thanksgiving and culminate with Christmas and New Years. The festivities go by so quickly that it seems that as we give the candies to the children on our doorsteps, the year is gone. It is a dazzling succession of culinary festivities wrapped in the warm reunion of loved ones. It is, without doubt, a wonderful season. It is also a season of elaborate and complicated recipes; strong dishes with overwhelming sauces, desserts with nuts, sausages, fish, seafood,

10

kiddos | October • November 2017

wine, and champagne; a huge gastronomic explosion! It is worth remembering, without lessening the festivities and for obvious reasons, that this season is associated with the vast majority of food reactions. Allergic reactions to food are relatively rare in adults but somewhat more frequent in children; the incidence in adults is estimated to be approximately 1% and in children, under three years of age, about 8%. For unknown reasons, the occurrence of allergic reactions to foods is on the rise. For instance, the frequency of peanut and tree nut allergy has risen in some countries such as the United States. Any food is capable of triggering an allergic reaction, but the foods commonly implicated in the majority of allergic reactions are cow’s milk, egg white, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish, and seafood. The allergic reaction is an immunologic reaction to the protein in the food and almost always occurs suddenly after the food is ingested, it is accompanied by urticaria or hives on the skin, edema or swelling, difficulty breathing and even low blood pressure with loss of consciousness.

There are other types of immunologic allergic reactions such as eczema or atopic dermatitis which are especially common in children and manifests with itching and recurrent skin rashes. Atopic dermatitis is sometimes related to the ingestion of certain foods. Allergic reactions should be differentiated from other reactions related to food ingestion that is not allergic such as food intolerance, toxic food poisoning, foodborne infection, and plain indigestion. For example, lactose intolerance is a very common condition that manifests with abdominal pain, flatulence, and diarrhea after ingesting milk. Toxic food poisoning such as Scombroid is caused by ingesting spoiled fish and could easily be mistaken at first sight with an allergic reaction. Fortunately, plain indigestion is the most common food-related ailment in general and in festive seasons in particular; in the majority of cases, indigestion does not have major consequences. Therefore, let us enjoy the festivities with moderation, keep an eye on guests with known food allergies, especially children, and Bon Appetit! k

A Dentist’s Advice for Halloween Assure A Smile Holistic Dentistry

Ask Dr. Ted

T

rick-or-treating during Halloween can be a lot of fun. However, if you are not careful, too much candy can be a nightmare for your children’s dental health. There are smarter ways to celebrate the holiday, and you need not ban trick-or-treating for your kids. Instead, we offer the following practical advice. Healthy Alternatives. It is best to avoid candy if possible. When you eat sweet treats, the bacteria in your mouth consume the sugar and then release acid which can lead to tooth decay. There are several great alternatives to candy. Instead choose healthy snacks, such as fresh fruit or nuts. Try veggies such as carrots or sugar snap peas. Avoid overly processed foods and chemicals. Consider making your own treats with your kids at Halloween. Look for healthy homemade snack recipes to bake and enjoy together. It is important to teach healthy meal and snack habits year round to your kids. Avoid “Bad” Candy. Halloween is just one day out of the year. So we understand if you choose to cheat a little. Just choose wisely. The worst candies are sticky and gummy varieties because they are harder to clean away from your teeth. Be careful with hard candies as they can actually break your teeth if you’re not careful. Also, hard candy and lollipops can be bad for teeth because they take longer to consume and stay in your mouth longer. Chocolate, and in particular dark chocolate, can be a safer choice. There are also a few nut and fruit bars on the market which are lower in sugar than most candy. Some of them offer added

benefits such as protein and fiber. Be sure to read the label beforehand to know what you are consuming. Have a Plan. If you do indulge in Halloween treats, have them as part of a meal or shortly afterward, rather than snacking on candy throughout the day. Limit your sweets stash, and have a plan or time limit for when you will get rid of excess candy. You might consider a candy “buy back” game with your kids. For example, pay your child $1 for every pound of candy they surrender to you after trick-or-treating. Brush and Floss. When it comes to sweets, the goal is to minimize damage to your teeth which can be caused by sugar. Brushing and flossing are healthy habits year-round. If your family indulges in candy at Halloween, be sure to keep up with your brushing and flossing routine to remove any buildup of food particles and sugar from the

teeth and gums. Our advice is to brush twice daily and floss once per day. This will go a long way in helping to avoid cavities and gum disease. A clean mouth is a healthy mouth. We hope this advice helps you to navigate this ghoulish holiday season. Be safe, and have a Happy Halloween!

TRICK-or-TREAT

for a New Kind of Thrill SOURCE: UNICEF

For most kids, Halloween is all about costumes and candy, but it can also be a chance to demonstrate how helping others brings its own set of rewards.

T

his October, children, families, and schools across the country will join in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, a monthlong celebration of the power and impact of kids helping kids. Throughout the month, kids, parents, and teachers can add purpose to their Halloween activities by collecting donations in support of vulnerable children.

This year, HSNi Cares, as a national partner, will continue to raise funds and awareness to support UNICEF through all of its brands: Ballard Designs, Frontgate, Garnet Hill, Grandin Road, HSN, and Improvements. Throughout September, customers will be able to make a donation to the children’s humanitarian organization online or over the phone at all brands.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF encourages children to be “scary good” this Halloween and help their peers around the world. Equipped with iconic orange collection boxes, kids can raise funds that add up to lifesaving change: $8 can buy a kit to give one family clean water to drink; $15 can buy a box of five mosquito nets to protect kids from deadly malaria; and $55 can buy one box of therapeutic food treatment to save a child from severe acute malnutrition.

Key Club International will participate by raising funds for The Eliminate Project, which seeks to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a deadly disease that claims the lives of thousands of babies and mothers each year. Key Club International, a studentled service leadership program of Kiwanis International, is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. For more information, visit TheEliminateProject.org or KeyClub.org.

Sharing the caring In addition, a series of partners and supporters are also making it easy to help.

American Airlines will support the campaign through UNICEF’s Change for Good program, which converts customers’ donations of foreign and domestic currency into lifesaving

services for children. From Oct.1631, American Airlines flight attendant volunteers will make Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF-themed announcements and collect donations from customers on select international flights. Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, will team up with Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its best-selling children’s book series “Goosebumps.” Popular character Slappy and his monstrous friends will be featured on the collection boxes as well as trickortreatforunicef.org.

Make it social Families are invited to share their Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF story on social media with the hashtag #ScaryGood. Parents and teachers who participated when they were children are also invited to share their experience with the hashtag #TBTOT4UNICEF. k

Getting to Know Bunny

E

WRITTEN BY: Marco Arano

ver since I got a dog I have been happier, her name is Bunny! she’s active, funny and smart, I think dogs would be an awesome gift for a kid. I remember always begging my mom for a dog, and I finally got one!. Well, now let me share a little bit about her and her personality; we always play catch with frisbees and bunny always catches it. She is so active and playful. She runs back and forth to where I throw the ball and back to our house, she is awesome.

For today’s adventure I will talk about when I went to the beach with her, we played soccer, volleyball, and even frisbee. She ran to the water

and came back jumping to me like a slippery dolphin, in fact then we went to the dog park and she still had energy! Besides, that she is cute, adorable and most importantly she is friendly. I also remember, when I got her believe it or not it was the same day as New Year’s Eve that’s right New Year’s Eve, isn’t that cool. That will be the end of my first adventure with Bunny, I know you want to hear more but wait for the next edition, stay tuned and enjoy. In every issue, I will share with you another Bunny’s adventure! k

Is BPA a thing of Halloween nightmares?

ow that fall is underway and you’re already growing tired of all the pumpkin-flavored treats, Halloween must not be too far away. That means it’s time to head to the store to pick up the trendiest Halloween decor to guarantee a shocked response from trick-or-treaters. But before you do, have you considered what some of these products are made of? Chances are, some may be polycarbonate plastic made with a common chemical known as BPA. BPA is a building-block chemical used to make a certain kind of plastic known as polycarbonate, which has unique properties that make products like flashlights lightweight and durable. And its shatter-resistance makes it ideal for use in LED lights to illuminate your trick-or-treaters to your doorstep.

For more information about BPA visit factsaboutbpa.org/ safety-assessments. BPT.

Before heading to the store, take a look at some of the common ways BPA is used to keep trick-or-treaters spooky and safe on Halloween night.

* Halloween decorations Every neighborhood has one house that spares no expense when decorating for holidays throughout the year. But did you know many of those decorations would not be possible without polycarbonate? It makes those spooky plastic tombstones durable and shatter-resistant. Products made with polycarbonate help keep trickor-treaters safe on Halloween night, and using BPA to make the polycarbonate for these products is safe as well. BPA is one of the most widely studied chemicals in use today, and when it comes to BPA used in food contact materials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) answered the question, “Is BPA safe?” with a clear answer - “Yes.” With Halloween fast approaching, rest assured your trick-or-treater will have a safe and fun Halloween thanks to a polycarbonate made from BPA - which isn’t so spooky after all! k it’s just about kids | kiddosmagazine.com

Do You Know How to Protect Your Child from Identity Theft? WRITTEN BY: Ellen Sirull

You buckle them into car seats, make sure they wear a helmet when riding their bikes and keep a first-aid kit on hand at all times. As a parent, you do everything you can to guard your children’s physical safety, but do you know how to protect them from identity theft?

H

ow Common Is Child Identity Theft?

Over 15,000 of the identity theft complaints to the Federal Trade Commission in 2016 affected children and teens (anyone age 19 and under), which represents 4% of all identity theft complaints for the year. The Identity Theft Resource Center, which tracks identity theft and data breach statistics, also reports that 4.4% of the identity theft victim calls they received last year involved child identity theft. Experian® handles 25,00030,000 fraud cases each year and approximately 17% were targeted at children. According to Michael Bruemmer, Vice President of Consumer Protection for Experian, child identity fraud or theft will affect 25% of kids before turning 18. Why Do Identity Thieves Target Kids? Children can be seen as a treasure trove for identity thieves. Because they don’t pay bills, take out loans or

hold credit cards, children’s credit histories are clean slates that identity thieves can exploit. Identity thieves also know that parents and guardians often don’t think to monitor their children’s identities or credit files. Many parents don’t discover their children have been the victims of identity theft until the child has to use his or her Social Security number for the first time, such as on college financial aid applications, or when applying for a first summer job or credit card. How Thieves Use Children’s Identities Anything identity thieves can do with an adult’s personal identifying information, they can also do with a child’s information. For example, they may open credit cards, mortgages, auto loans or other lines of credit in the child’s name. They may use the child’s information to open utility accounts

or commit fraud on government, tax, health or employment forms. Criminals may use a child’s identity to conceal their own in order to avoid arrest or prosecution. Because child identity theft can go undetected for so long, it can be very difficult to clear up the problems it causes. Protection and Prevention Tips While identity thieves are creative and motivated, parents and guardians still can do a lot to reduce the risk of their child becoming a victim of identity theft.

• Protect your child’s Social Security number. Never share it with anyone who doesn’t have a very good reason for having it.Never carry your child’s Social Security card, just as you shouldn’t carry yours around. Memorize the number and keep the card stored in a secure place.

• Monitor your child’s personal information. Unrecognized

activity involving your child’s email address, phone number, bank accounts or other personal information can be a signal that information has been compromised.

• Pay attention to privacy policies. Schools, clubs, dentists, doctor’s offices, sports teams, etc.— virtually everyone has a privacy policy that details how your child’s private information will be used, handled and protected.

• Use your own information whenever possible. Parents often share information about their kids without thinking about it. Protect your child’s personal information by using your own instead, whenever possible.

• Avoid over sharing on social media. Social media has become a great way to keep far-off friends and family up to date on what your child is doing. But identity thieves also know social media can be a source of useful information.

• Monitor your child’s social media and online activity. It’s also important to closely monitor your child’s social media use to ensure you know who he or she is talking to and what they’re sharing online.

• Keep your home safe. A break-in could net burglars more than just your physical valuables if important documents like birth certificates and Social Security cards are unsecured in your home.

To make topping: In small bowl, whisk egg white until foamy and brush over crust. In another bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle evenly over crust.

Place diced apples in large mixing bowl. Add apple butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla and brown sugar. Mix until apples are evenly coated. Place one pie crust in bottom of greased pan. Slowly stretch out crust to cover pan’s bottom. Cut some edges off, if necessary. Spread apple filling evenly over crust.

Bake 50-60 minutes until crust is golden brown. Remove from oven and cool slightly before cutting. To make glaze: In small bowl, combine powdered sugar, milk and remaining vanilla, and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bars and serve. k

CONTINUATION FROM PAGE 9 While it may seem trivial or perhaps difficult to do, practicing forgiveness (of yourself, the past, others) will give your family the opportunity to open your hearts, expand your minds, increase compassion and understanding, and allow for an attitude of gratitude to replace negative feelings. These are all benefits that far exceed those of holding onto anger or upset (remember, in that case you get to be right, but you don’t get to be happy). Make the space in your hearts, in your home, and allow forgiveness to be the glue that holds you all together in love, acceptance and grace…this holiday, and always. k

• Grief…and Forgiveness.

Lead by example. Practice what you teach your children.

The holidays can be an especially painful time when there is someone missing from the dinner table. It’s not just an empty seat…it’s an empty feeling in the heart. Be sure to practice forgiveness as part of the grieving process. Forgive your loved ones for passing on, forgive yourself for the words you didn’t speak, forgive the situation for happening… no matter what pain it is you’re holding onto, forgive. And let the pain go. Honor your loved one, and the love you shared between you, by gently releasing any negative attachments or feelings, and try to replace them with love: set a picture of them nearby, say a prayer, invite them to be present with you in your heart during the holidays, or make time to share stories and memories about them. You can even begin a tradition to honor that special missing loved one during holidays. Perhaps you can bake their favorite pie or dish. And as you enjoy it, thank them for being such a beautiful part of your life.

Tips to Get Involved at Your Child’s School

Photography: Getty Images

FOR SOME PARENTS, BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON CAN BE BITTERSWEET AS THEY WATCH THEIR KIDS GROW MORE INDEPENDENT EACH YEAR.

T

aking on an active role at your child’s school is a simple way to provide support and stay engaged.

Whether your schedule is relatively open or you’re juggling multiple demands, there are ways for virtually all families to participate in their children’s classrooms. Volunteer in the classroom. Today’s teachers are busier than ever, developing classroom lessons, teaching to rigorous curriculum standards, coaching and chairing extracurricular activities and tackling their own professional development goals. This can leave little down time to coordinate special activities or classroom celebrations, but that’s where parent volunteers can play an essential role. Develop relationships with teachers. Creating a connection with your child’s teacher can be based on more than checking in on performance and behavior. Sharing resources and ideas with teachers makes you an ally and an asset to the classroom. One example is the Tom’s of Maine “Green

Your School Fund,” which will give $1 million to classrooms nationwide this year so students can roll up their sleeves and tackle hands-on environmental projects to understand the impact they can have on the planet today and tomorrow. Join a formal organization. School organizations like the Parent Teacher Association are designed specifically to engage parents in the education system. Members have a direct connection to news about what’s happening in the school, an avenue to share concerns and means for inspiring change and bringing about school improvements. Take part in field trips. Many rich learning opportunities exist outside the classroom, but those activities are often limited by chaperone availability. Both schools and most field trip destinations require certain student-to-chaperone ratios for safety and optimal learning. Joining a classroom field trip not only allows you to share the experience side-by-side with your own child, but makes the outing possible for other children as well.

Share your talents. There are ways parents can get involved without straying too far from what they know best. Volunteering to speak at a career day in your child’s class is a simple way to share realworld experiences and help prepare the next generation of leaders. Of course, if you’re looking for something a little more hands-on, many schools welcome community support to help build props or sew costumes for the school play, host a lesson on a favorite artist, share cultural traditions or help run activities like science fairs or field days. If you’re unsure how to get started, contact your student’s teacher or the school’s main office and ask for guidance on where you can make the biggest impact. k

Learn more about the program and how you can help your child’s teacher submit a creative environmental classroom project at GreenSchoolFund.com.

pets

Pet-Friendly

by keeping pets away from your work area entirely while handling these substances.

A

s scorching temperatures fade and pest season passes, pet owners may breathe a sigh of relief. Although the seasonal risks of summer are gone, your four-legged friend may need some special attention this autumn, as well. Cold-weather pests. Though the dangers associated with ticks, mosquitos and other creepy, crawly critters lessen as the temperatures drop, those same colder days bring other creatures scurrying inside and that can present a whole new set of problems. Rats and mice tend to migrate indoors in search of warmth and the poisons used to eliminate them can be highly toxic to pets. Be sure pesticides are used in areas inaccessible to your animals. Stay alert. Ticks may be less prevalent in the fall, but that doesn’t mean they’re gone completely – especially if hospitable environments remain. Keep yard and garden debris to a minimum and continue administering repellents for any pets that spend time outdoors. On the move. Seasonal changes mean wildlife is on the move, making changes to settle into winter. Snakes

32

kiddos | October • November 2017

Not so fun-gus. Damp conditions can bring about a surge of mushrooms. Although only a small percentage of mushrooms are toxic, they can be hard to distinguish from the non-toxic variety. A good rule of thumb: keep pets clear of areas where mushrooms may be found, or if that’s not possible, conduct regular checks and remove any temptation that pops up. changes to settle into winter. Snakes are often more mobile during autumn months and inexperienced pets may risk bites if they tangle with intruders. Shiny, new things. Kids aren’t the only ones attracted to a collection of new school supplies. Curious pets may dive into a pile of crayons, markers, rulers and other supplies, and although the items likely aren’t toxic, they can result in digestive blockages or damage from sharp, broken edges.

Practices for Fall

Comfort foods. Most pet owners know chocolate is dangerous for pets, but many other foods that are common in the fall can also be problematic. Keep pets away from rich, savory foods that can upset their digestion and leave Fido at home during your annual jaunt to the apple orchard; apple stems, seeds and cores can create plenty of digestive havoc. If you want to indulge your pet with a little seasonal flavor, instead try offering fresh or canned pumpkin. k

Anticipate energy needs. Colder temperatures can mean your pet has to exert more energy to keep warm and that may warrant bumping up meal serving sizes. Consult with your veterinarian about the appropriate feeding amounts for your pet’s specific breed, health and lifestyle needs. Auto-related issues. Many car owners use the change of season as a milestone for car maintenance and winterizing, such as changing oil or antifreeze. Antifreeze in particular is highly toxic; a small quantity can kill pets and, unfortunately, the sweet smell makes it quite attractive to curious creatures. Clean spills thoroughly and take added precaution

The Baptist Health South Florida site will be located on the northeast corner of NW 53rd Street and NW 84th Avenue directly across the street from Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School and diagonal to Downtown Doral Park. Baptist Health Express Care is an appointmentfree healthcare option in which an ARNP- nurse practitioner- will provide speedy treatment for minor injuries and illnesses.
