It’s Here! Our Anniversary WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy
W
hile this is tremendous cause for celebration, we want to take a moment to thank YOU - our readers, community, local groups or businesses, professionals, writers, photographers, designers, parents, children and supporters - for helping us to truly make a difference in the lives of families in Florida and countless others we reach through our online presence. Founded in 2013, Kiddos Magazine was born with a focus and mission to help strengthen the bonds between parents and children. Our goal was, and remains, to provide value-based content and activities that families can engage in to create harmonious, healthy and happy homes. In today’s day and age, with technology and screen time as a cultural norm, a division is easily created between interpersonal communications and quality time together. Kiddos is proud and honored to enter into the homes of Florida families and offer information and recommendations on education, parenting, art, health, sports and entertainment that serve as the glue that binds family members together. “With the pervasive nature of technology invading our everyday lives, there is a vacuum right now in how families interact with each other and how parents pass along their values to their kids”, said Veronica Lepere, editor of Kiddos magazine. “At Kiddos, our focus is to help instill those familybased values through the magazine and

to strengthen the bond between families by sharing new programs and activities the whole family can participate in. For example, through our recent partnering with Amigos For Kids, we are committing to disseminating education about child abuse, which is fueled by lack of family values and interaction, in order to help prevent tragedies, she added. Kiddos has had the great honor of partnering with amazing groups, professionals and non-profits to make a difference in the quality of the lives of children in Florida and their families. Addressing local gaps or needs for reform,
Kiddos and affiliates bring a voice to the voiceless and a spotlight on issues that are impacting our families and children, in hopes of making a positive and direct impact. Creating awareness about problems like abuse or neglect, bullying, social exclusion, and many more, Kiddos and its partners are able to distribute key information that can educate both parents and communities about programs available and how to prevent such calamities in our local community. We, at Kiddos, are dedicated to bringing families back together. To instilling values, tradition and culture into the home.

aking sure that your children receive all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things you can do as a parent to ensure your children’s long-term health as well as the health of friends, classmates, and others in your community. Getting every recommended dose of each vaccine provides children with the best protection possible. Keep in mind that there are many opportunities to catch-up on vaccines for your preteen or teen. Preteens and teens typically see their doctors or other healthcare professionals for physicals before participation in sports, camping events, travel, and applying to college.

Four Tips For Brighter Smiles This School Year Assure A Smile Holistic Dentistry
A
new school year is an exciting time. Many parents are busy with back-to-school shopping and to-do lists. Now is also the perfect time to focus on your child’s dental health. Here are four great ways to make the most of this next school year. It’s Dentist Time. Make a dental appointment before school starts or early in the school year. Your child should see a dentist twice per year for a checkup and dental cleaning. Don’t wait until there’s a tooth ache or noticeable tooth decay, which can result in missed school. Preventative and regular dental appointments can help identify problems before they become serious. Healthy Eating. A healthy diet is an important part of good dental health. If your child takes a lunch to school, plan ahead to include healthy foods. If your child eats in a school cafeteria, teach them how to make healthy choices on their own. Healthful options for lunch or snacks include whole foods such as fresh fruits
and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Avoid not-so-good choices like candy, junk food, and sugary soft drinks. Here are some easy snack ideas: a hard boiled egg, a mini sealed bag containing sugar snap peas and grapes, cucumber sandwiches, oven-roasted chickpeas, yogurt with strawberries, or clementines, which are easier for kids to to peel than oranges. Healthy Living. There is a strong connection between exercise, healthy eating and oral health. Teach your child to make smarter life choices. For example: Avoid tobacco. Drink water. Avoid harmful chemicals and overly processed foods. Choose whole foods, fruits and vegetables. Get involved in sports or be part of an exercise program. Manage stress. It’s important to encourage all of these healthy habits with your child. The way to a beautiful, sparkling smile is through making smart choices. Brushing and Flossing. Regular brushing and flossing should be part of your child’s daily routine. Bacterial

plaque and food can settle between the teeth, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. Back-to-school time is a great time to teach your child about healthy dental habits, such as brushing at least twice per day, morning and night, and flossing daily. We recommend a softbristled toothbrush since harder bristles may be too abrasive for children. We also recommend switching out your toothbrushes when they begin show wear, every three to four months. So as you’re purchasing supplies for school, stock up on extra toothbrushes for home. We hope these ideas help you and your family have a successful and healthy school year. And remember, bright, beautiful smiles are a family affair. k

Capablanca Chess Academy Chess program
C
CA, a scholastic affiliate of the United State Chess Federation (USCF), offers chess programs to children from Kindergarten to 12th grade at its primary location at The Falls Business Center and in multiple schools throughout Miami. Programs include private and group lessons, afterschool programs, summer camps, and tournaments. Coaches are USCF and FIDE rated players. How Chess Makes Kids Smarter Consistently playing chess develops the brain of children by stimulating all six cognitive areas of the brain. Enhanced Concentration Chess challenges the brain to sustain concentration. Players must focus
intensely to understand how to best move their pieces to accomplish their main goal, to checkmate. At CCA children are taught the benefits of careful observation and concentration. Improved visualization and memory, chess trains children to imagine a sequence of actions before they happen. Children also learn patterns and apply them to different situations.
Enhanced reading, language, and mathematical abilities Studies such as those of Stuart Margulies, Ph.D., in 1996 and James M. Liptrap, in 1997 have concluded that school students who played chess systematically scored higher on reading tests and math test than their non-chess-playing peers. k
Strengthen Critical Thinking and Executive Functions Chess develops critical thinking skills as players are trained to identify alternatives and consider the pros and cons of various actions. They learn to evaluate the results of specific actions and sequences. At CCA children are trained to think first, then act.

How to Help Your Kids Get Organized Without Nagging WRITTEN BY: Richard Gallagher PH. D
Positive encouragement and patience are key to helping your child learn organizational skills.
T
oo often, weekday mornings can seem like a race against the clock. When your alarm goes off, you start out with the best of intentions (serenity now!). But, by the time the bus arrives, you are frustrated, frazzled, and screaming at your kids—again.
“This may sound Pollyannish, but respecting children and praising their efforts do lead to improved behavior.”
Not only is nagging and yelling a horrible, upsetting way to start your morning, it is also generally ineffective. If it happens over and over again, it sets up a bad parent-child relationship that can result in continued noncompliance by kids and distress in parents. In fact, in the long run, persistent negative interactions between parents and children can lead children to avoid their parents and make tasks even more unpleasant for them, and cause parents to give up on making requests. At the most extreme levels, persistent parental criticism can increase the risk for depression in children and teens. So, what is a parent to do? Deficits in organizational skills are an important problem. Many kids need help learning to get organized in order to more effectively carry out tasks related to their morning routines and school responsibilities. Their problems with an organization can hinder school performance and lead to high levels of family conflict. An alternative to nagging First, we recommend that parents work hard to avoid yelling at kids or nagging them, because this only works temporarily—while using firm but pleasant requests helps kids to be
16
kiddos | August • September 2018
more cooperative immediately and in the future. Rather than catching kids’ mistakes and providing harsh requests, we recommend changing directives into “positive prompts.” What are positive prompts? A positive prompt is simply a pleasant request with some honest encouragement. Children are really no different from other people—they like to be treated with respect and good manners. A request starting with “please” and followed by “thank you” when the task is completed makes children more willing to do as they are asked. Our studies show that even the kids who struggle the most can improve. In fact, children with the greatest deficits in organization, time management, and planning made large improvements that contributed to two wonderful outcomes: Their school work advanced, and the parents and children experienced significantly less conflict.
How can you start building improved organizational skills with positive prompting? It’s quite simple. Here are some of the guidelines we recommend. 1. Move close to your child. Don’t yell a prompt from the bathroom to your kid’s bedroom. If you do, your child is more likely to ignore you, making this a wasted reminder. 2. Get your child’s attention. Make eye contact! If they are texting or playing Minecraft, they won’t hear you. 3. Ask for one thing at a time. If you give your child multiple reminders at once, odds are that she will forget at least one of them. Focus on what’s most important for that day. 4. Be clear. “Please put your homework folder in your backpack” (vs. “pack up”). 5. Use a positive, encouraging voice. It’s difficult, we know! But try your
kiddos
fun
Word Search BACK TO SCHOOL
best to keep the frustration out of your voice. Try taking three deep breaths (and a slow sip of coffee) before speaking. 6. Don’t nag! When you nag your child, especially about something you’ve nagged him about before, it is quite likely that all your child hears after the fifth or sixth time is “blah, blah, blah.” 7. Stick with the present; forget about the past. “Please pack your lunchbox” (vs. “Let’s see if you can remember your lunch today, unlike yesterday”). As your child becomes more comfortable with a specific behavior, fewer prompts will be needed. But don’t taper them off until you notice a change in your child’s behavior. Prompts and praise are useful until the behaviors become habitual. Too often, parents expect kids to get it right the first time, but waiting until the behavior is ingrained is key to success. We all want to help our children be more organized—and we want to maintain our close bonds. Using positive prompts is one of the ways to do that. By understanding how to prompt positive behavior in our kids, we can preserve our peace of mind and theirs. The tools for turning rough mornings into pleasant ones are in our hands. k About the Author Richard Gallagher, Ph.D., is an associate professor of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. He is the first author of the treatment manual used to improve organization, time management, and planning skills that was fully tested and found to be effective for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. Along with Elana Spira and Jennifer Rosenblatt, he has taken the lessons learned from the research to develop the book for parents of all children—The Organized Child—from which this article is adapted.

Back-to-School
Seafood Favorites With a new school year beginning, it’s important for parents to be prepared and help their children start forming good habits. For example, most children function better on a routine. They wake up every day at a certain time, they practice the same sports and eat nutritious, fresh foods that fuel their bodies.
O
Hearty Salmon Skewers over Brown Rice
ne healthy option for kids is seafood. When kids eat at least two servings of seafood each week, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, they can receive big benefits. Fish and shellfish supply nutrients such as vitamins B and D, choline and essential omega-3 fatty acids, which are all needed for strong bones, brain development, healthy immune systems and cardiovascular systems.
Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients
• 1 pound salmon, cut into 1/2-inch cubes kosher salt, to taste freshly ground pepper, to taste paprika, to taste
• 8 skewers • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 cup pineapple, cubed
With a new routine in place, it can sometimes be hard for parents to keep up, but with fast-cooking seafood like thin fish fillets and shrimp, a healthy dinner can be ready in minutes.
• 1/2 cup canola oil • 1 lemon • 2 cups cooked brown rice
• Coat salmon with kosher salt, freshly ground pepper and paprika, to taste. Slide piece of salmon onto skewer, followed by tomato and then pineapple. Repeat three times on each skewer, or until skewer is full. Instructions
• In large skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat 1/2 cup canola oil 1 minute.
• Place skewers in pan and turn every 2 minutes per side. Squeeze lemon on skewers while cooking.
• To serve, place 1/2 cup rice on each plate and two skewers on top. Squeeze hint of lemon over each serving, if desired. k

How to Get Your Kids Coding WRITTEN BY: SARAH BLECHER
As we head back to school, it’s time to start anew and think about what we want our kids to learn this year. The school will do most of the heavy lifting but as a parent, you want to fill in the gaps. You may have heard about the importance of getting every child coding but how can you get started with your own little and not-so-little ones? Don’t worry we have you covered!
G
one are the days where computer programming was all about math and computations. Today’s programmer makes interactive websites with amazing animations and graphics experiences. They code iPhone and Android apps that help us deposit our checks, translate our Spanish homework or beat our friends in Scrabble-like word domination. The creative programming era has arrived. So if you child likes art or games, programming could be a wonderful way for them to express themselves creatively and set them up for a fulfilling career in the future. How do you get your child started? Here are 5 ways to get your child used to technology and coding today at any age:
0-3 years Children at this age have a hard time talking so at this point it’s just about getting them used to the idea of technology. One of our favorites is a toy called Alpha Tech Blocks. New to the scene, it’s a set of digitally connected A-Z blocks that interact with apps on your iPad. www.alphatechblocks.com/
3-5 years Still too young to type, these preschoolers can still develop their logic skills. For this age, we recommend a board game called Robot Turtles. It’s a non-digital toy that will get your child ready for
thinking like a programmer. www.robotturtles.com/
coding workshops and camps for a more immersive experience. Here are a few of our favorites:
5-7 years Now that your little one can use the keyboard, it’s time for some fun online games to continue to develop their reasoning skills. Code.org is a great place to start. A non-profit started to get kids coding, this website has a set of activities for pre-readers. There are 14 lessons you can start to do with them and as they go along simply log them in. www.studio.code.org/s/preexpress
8-10 years At this age, coding can really get fun. Code.org is still a go-to stop for computer programming fun. There are lots of options but we like COURSE C as a good starting point for older kids with enough lessons to keep them going throughout the school year. www.studio.code.org/s/coursec Have more of an artist on your hands? Khanacademy.org has wonderful activities that are all about creating art and animation. Go through their hour of code and learn to draw a self-portrait and waving snowman all with code! www.khanacademy.org/ computing/hour-of-code/hour-ofdrawing-code/v/welcome-hour-ofcode
11 years and up
Code/Art - Perfect for girls! This nonprofit organization offers free CodeHer clubs throughout South Florida starting at the beginning of each school year. The curriculum is geared towards girls and all the projects involve art so your daughter is sure to love it. www.code-art.com/ Engineering for Kids - This organization offers lots of engineering classes ranging from coding to physics to engineering projects. Look specifically for their “Apprentice Engineers” classes for your older child. www.engineeringforkids.com/miami/ Does your child love Minecraft? They can use code to modify their game using Tynker.com. Choose one of their MinecraftMod lesson to meld their love for the game and enhance their programming skills. www.tynker.com/parents/ Do you have an advanced coder already that needs a challenge? Try Tech Rocket. They offer free courses and some for a subscription but help your child learn popular programming languages such as Javascript, Python, and beyond. www.techrocket.com/ courses k

Teach Students Empathy and Awareness as they Head Back to School WRITTEN BY: Nicole Hockley
“Youth are more desensitized to violence than ever, and instilling empathy is imperative.”
W
ith back-to-school upon us, we all know how important it is to ensure students are prepped with the essentials, such as notebooks and pens. However, with the rise of school shootings, we must also prepare our kids with empathy, awareness, and the overall knowledge of what to do in the event they come across someone exhibiting at-risk behaviors - these actions can be life-saving. In the first six months of 2018, we witnessed over 20 school shootings across the country, including the devastating mass shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL and Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, TX. In Parkland, we heard students say that they weren’t surprised that the shooter carried out the attack due to signs in his behavior.

On average, 80 percent of school shooters tell someone about their violent plans prior to carrying out the act and 70 percent of people who complete suicide told someone about their plans or gave some type of warning. Stats like these prove why it is critical to teach students and adults to Know the Signs. Students know their school community best, as they often see and hear things that adults might overlook - especially on social media. Sandy Hook Promise’s four Know the Signs programs teach students and adults how to identify, intervene, and get help for an individual BEFORE they hurt themselves or others. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for American teenagers. Our program Signs of Suicide Prevention trains teachers on how to spot warning
signs of depression and youth suicide. Suicide is preventable, and we want to make sure that students who need help are able to access it in a timely manner. Sandy Hook Promise created the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS), a platform that allows students to speak up and report an anonymous tip 24/7 via the app, website, or phone hotline without fear and get help for at-risk individuals. The SS-ARS platform is managed by a national digital leader in the school safety space and a multi-lingual crisis center. Each tip is assessed by threat level and forwarded to the appropriate school officials and law enforcement. Through the SS-ARS platform, there have been numerous shooting plots, suicides, and other acts of violence that have been averted thanks to brave
students who stood up and Said Something. Youth are more desensitized to violence than ever, and instilling empathy is imperative. Our Start with Hello program teaches students that the simple act of greeting a peer could change lives. Schools that have rolled this program out have reported a dramatic decrease in bullying and creation of an overall inclusive community. Following Parkland, there has been a great deal of conversation about arming teachers and school administrators. However, there are better alternatives than placing any weapon in classrooms. Our Safety Assessment & Intervention program trains teachers and school administrators on how to identify and treat an underlying issue in an at-risk student’s life. While one warning sign on its own may not mean a person is planning
an act of violence, if multiple warning signs are witnessed, it should be taken seriously. Some signs that students, educators, and parents to be aware of are:
All of the programs offered through Sandy Hook Promise are available at no-cost to schools and help to drive our mission: prevent gun violence BEFORE it happens.
• A strong fascination with firearms. • Exhibiting aggressive behavior for seemingly minor reasons.
• A shift in academic performance. • Extreme feelings of isolation/social withdrawal due to real/perceived actions of others. • Making overt threats of violence (spoken, written, pictures, videos, gestures).
For this upcoming school year, let’s create a safe environment in our schools by taking proactive measures and adding gun violence prevention to the top of our back-to-school checklist.

Then in one day in 2014, the thenthird-grader Lauren learned about a group of students that did not own books and had troubles learning to read. She saw the library they had in their school and the shelves were mostly empty and had very few books for the students to read. Lauren could not understand how the library had such a small quantity of books for the children that attended this school. Her school always encouraged her to read but knew this would be difficult if a child did not have books at home. She decided to affirmatively make a
ave your children ever wanted to make a difference in your community? A little Miami girl named Lauren began to feel this way after finding out that some children in her school weren’t able to have the same access to books as she did, and she realized that she held the power to help others less fortunate. Thus started the journey to Page by Page, a (501 (c)(3) charity, whose goal is to help Lauren’s own community while teaching others to do the same!
difference in these children’s lives. Lauren received help from her mother, and with her assistance, she started the Page by Page Book Drive Program within her elementary school. This program was designed to collect gently used books to donate to schools, libraries, and charities that serve the children within her community that may not have access to these resources. While developing this program, she organized a schoolwide book drive to donate to this school system and more importantly, to its children. in their own communities. It is a childempowered charitable organization that teaches leadership skills while cultivating a will to help others less fortunate. Based in Miami-Dade County, this organization has already helped many local communities. The Page by Page Book Drive Program consists of many components including morning announcement scripts, electronic flyers, posters, and so much more! Over time and throughout the many years of book drives, Page by Page Book Drive presently partners with many local and national charities to enrich their existing programs and expand the Page by Page network of giving to charitable organizations. Today, homeless shelters, the Keys after Hurricane Irma, schools, Salvation Army, and many charities benefit from the Page by Page Book Drives. With parental supervision, the experience is fun and rewarding. Students or groups (such as Boy Scouts, Girl
Scouts, or various other organizations) have contacted Page by Page Book Drive to learn how they can also run their own movement for their town. The organization reaches out to all children who wish to make a difference in their community, especially within Miami Dade and Broward County. k

Frost Science Brings Science
to Life Outside of the Classroom
S
cience learning doesn’t have to stop after the school bell rings. In fact, engaging your kids outside of the classroom can help them retain what they’ve learned in class and encourage them to explore further… all while having fun! Fortunately, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science makes it easy to do just that. The stunning new Downtown Miami campus in Museum Park offers families the chance to tap into the life of a marine biologist, astronomer and engineer, without ever leaving the city. As the only place in South Florida to feature a planetarium, aquarium and science museum in one campus, Frost Science is consistently offering fresh, new experiences and exhibitions for visitors and locals alike. This past summer, the museum released “Journey to the Stars,” a new Frost Planetarium show narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg that takes viewers on a voyage through space and time to experience the birth, life and death of stars—including our very own sun.
