Celebrating 50 issues of quality journalism (and more than 8 years of publishing) is a big deal, and by no meaning hype. Kiddos has reached a significant landmark with issue number 50 of the magazine. It's been an amazing journey that is far from over and we look forward to inspiring more parents and families of what life has ahead of you as you raise your children. A path full of wonder, awe, joy, and learning. To all our readers, contributors, advertisers, and sponsors – a big thank you for your continuing support and I hope you enjoy this special Fall issue, which is also dedicated to the memory of our photographer, Michelle Barreneche, who sadly died in August. As you know Fall is one of my favorite seasons, the colors, the scents, decor, it has a great seasonal vibe, and I can take it all in. I am grateful for this Fall season!. As we are gearing up for celebrations, take the opportunity this Thanksgiving to de-stress, share lots of laughs, be present and bond as a family with these 10 dinner table topics that Camille shares with Kiddos – The Thanksgiving Table: Share Lots of Laughs, Love & Memories this Holiday. The Thanksgiving Dinner Table: Share Lots of Laughs, Love & Memories this Holiday WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

T

he holidays can be a really exciting time, especially for children, and even more rewarding this year, after many families spent the Holidays apart from loved ones last year. Even so, the hustle and bustle of the end of the year festivities can leave parents feeling stressed and anxious. Take the opportunity this Thanksgiving to de-stress, share lots of laughs, be present and bond as a family with these 10 dinner table topics! 1. Thanks-giving: Get ready for the warm-fuzzies. It may seem

8

kiddos | October • November 2021

obvious, but do you really go around the table and discuss what you’re thankful for? Give thanks! Take turns, and each name 1-3 things you’re grateful for this year. This is a very heart-warming way to enjoy dinner, to learn about one another, to bring love and joy to the table, and to keep it circulating. 2. Let’s Change the World. This is a fun way to get to know each other more intimately and share some feel-good discussion. Ask a question like, “If you had the opportunity to

make the world a better place, what would you do or who would you help?” Allow each person to answer and elaborate. 3. What Makes YOU Special? Have each person at the table name one thing about every one else that is interesting, unique or special. Maybe there’s something about that person you haven’t told them, or shared. This is a sure-fire way to get those feel-goodvibes going and boost everyone’s confidence.

Enjoying each other's company, getting to know one another on a deeper level

9. Who Am I? Have each person imitate someone else at the table, without saying who. See if you can guess who they are pretending to be! This one is great for giggles! Whoever guesses correct gets a turn next. 10. Turkey Time! Have everyone take a turn trying out their best Turkey sound! This one is light and fun, reminding us that life can be full with play and doesn't have to be serious all the time. Amidst all of the stress and challenges of the last year and a half, this is a great way to let loose and just enjoy each other.

4. Feast Your Eyes on This. Ask everyone what their favorite food is for the holidays and explain what they would add to Thanksgiving dinner or dessert that would make it even more delicious for them! Maybe next year you can add it to the menu! 5. TBThanks. Have the kids ask the older generations what their favorite part of Thanksgiving or the holiday season was growing up. This is a great way to learn about rituals and traditions to keep them going - or start them back up again - for generations to come.

President, writer, hero, scientist, etc.) “If you had to wear the same outfit everyday, what would it be?” “If you could pick your own name, what would it have been?” 8. What’s the Hardest Thing? Ask each other, what is the hardest thing about being a child, a parent, or a grown up? While it seems simple, some really deep feelings can come up. On the other hand, perhaps you’ll get a good laugh at some of the silly answers! Kids say the darnedest things, right?

While Thanksgiving is a time we strive to be thankful and to remember all of the blessings in our lives, remember that you can still have fun while doing that. Kids get this concept; as adults we may have a harder time with it. Enjoying each other’s company, getting to know one another on a deeper level, and laughing and playing is just another way to learn to cherish one another for the unique and special individuals that you all are. After some full-body-belly-laughs together, you’ll all be left with a swelling heart, overflowing with love and appreciation for one another, the priceless bond of family and the gift of life. k

6. Precious Memories. Have each person name their favorite holiday they have spent together and explain why. This will help everyone get to know more about the other, what their passions or interests are, and how to continue to nurture that feeling of fulfillment. 7. Fun Facts. Play around a little! Have some fun and be creative while really getting to know everyone on a deeper level. “If you had to eat the same thing everyday, what would it be?” “If you could be any famous person, alive or from history, who would you be and why?” (Think: painter,

Care Resource Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

O Care Resource’s Medical Providers have integrated best practices and considerations for women’s health into their practices.

kiddos | October • November 2021

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness surrounding the disease. The theme for the month is “Let’s Work ToGetHer,” – as it speaks to the power a community has to help deliver access to education, screening, treatment, support, and hope to individuals battling breast cancer, despite circumstances. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while

black and white women get breast cancer at about the same rate, breast cancer death rates are 40% higher among black women than white women. In addition, the CDC’s findings established that breast cancer was more likely to be found at an earlier stage among white women than among black women. For this reason, Care Resource is dedicated to providing underserved communities with access to equitable and quality healthcare, including 3D mammograms.

Celebrating the Life of Michelle Barreneche

A Loving Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister and Friend. Lifestyle & Wedding Photographer, Owner of Simply Chic Photography WRITTEN BY: Veronica Lepere

Michelle and her daughter, Mia were featured in the Kiddos 2019 Mother’s Day Special Edition alongside other moms. This was a funny story for her; When I asked her to submit a photo with her child, she realized that as a photographer she didn't have a recent picture of herself and Mia for the article! Michelle then took this self portrait on the left.

O

n Tuesday, August 3rd, God called upon Michelle Barreneche. Her beautiful smile and radiant light is now shining in heaven, and down over all of the people she loved and cared for that she left behind on Earth. Writing this has been difficult; Michelle was an integral part of the Kiddos journey and story from the beginning stages of planning this project in 2013. She was always there for me and adored every crazy cover idea I came up with! We planned so many photo shoots together - from casting calls, selecting locations, faces, clothing and backdrops - and

In Michelle's honor, I want to encourage every Mom to make sure they have a picture with their child(ren). If you can't book a photo session, simply do a self portrait, as she did, and capture a special moment every year. These memories will last a lifetime, and you will have access to a photo in case you need to do a virtual card, a post or use it as a cover in a school project. we always laughed and had so much fun. The best part was that Michelle was doing what she loved the most... capturing special moments with her camera. I learned so much from my time with her and I was delighted to see her in action, being amazing with the kids. Michelle took every picture that has been featured in my Publisher Letter. In fact, the current picture is the last photo she took back in 2018 while doing a TV segment for Acceso Total. This photograph may be a little outdated, but is very, very dear to me.

Beyond blessed to have these special memories. Michelle, thank you for your unconditional support. You will be always in our hearts. k

10 School Traditions You Should Do With Your Child Every Year Written By: Abby Watts

B

ack in June on the last day of school before summer break, my kids and I recapped the year while we were in the morning car line. We talked about the fun and not-so-fun moments and how much they’d grown and… Aw, man! I realized that I’d forgotten to mark their heights on the door trim back when the year started—one of our yearly school traditions, well, until now. As the school years pass, there are things we can do with our kids not only to celebrate their growth but also to make memories, create teaching moments, and mark that unique point in time. I like to think of it as a school year bucket list that you repeat and enjoy in a different way as your kids get bigger. So here are 10 school traditions parents should try to do with their kids every year (and it’s never too late to start!).

1

Sign them out for lunch. Ask the boss for an extended break and sign your son or daughter out for a special lunch with Mom. If you have more than one child and can take them for lunch on separate days, that’s even better. Your child will gladly forgo a smushed PB&J or cafeteria pizza for one-on-one time with you.

2

Go to a school sporting event or performance together. Going to your school’s flag football game or theater production is a great way to boost school spirit, make friends, and have a fun night out together. If you know what school your child will be attending next, check out an event there to start to build excitement.

3

Talk about what they want to be when they grow up and do some research. Your child’s career aspirations might

16

kiddos | October • November 2021

go from garbage man to zookeeper to teacher to YouTuber to private detective. Record it every year and help your child learn what a day in the life of that profession would be like.

4

Celebrate their report cards. My sons’ report cards come electronically and I have to say, it’s just not the same as the ones we got on paper. Taking my report cards to Burger King for a freebie was always one of my favorite school traditions as a kid. Now, we still should find something redeeming on their report cards—a C that was raised to a B, all A’s in conduct—and celebrate. There are only so many years when your kids get to show you a report card, so use it as a chance to recognize their hard work.

5

Record their favorites. Each year take note of your kids’ favorite songs, TV shows, and books. This is a great way to record how their personalities have changed, recall pop

culture, and embarrass your child. Remember when your favorite song was “Baby Shark?”

6

Read a book of their choice together. Let them pick a book or two each school year and read with them. If you have teens, you could agree to read a chapter or two per week and then talk about it over coffee on a Sunday afternoon. It will be like your own personal mother-child book club!

7

Surprise them with a mental health day. I was never allowed to miss school as a kid and I’ve carried that rigidity into parenthood. I don’t like the idea of my kids playing hooky when there are plenty of holidays and random days off. But even I have to admit that getting dressed for school and then turning the opposite direction to head to the beach, a theme park, or a day at the outlet mall would be totally awesome.

fun

Find the seven differences between the two pictures 8

Volunteer or chaperone a school event. COVID got in the way of this last year, but volunteering in the classroom or at an event like a fundraiser or a dance will make your kids feel like you’re invested in their school. As much as our kids say they’re embarrassed when we’re around their classmates, they secretly love that we care enough to show up.

9

Come up with a school year slogan. Every day as my kids get out of the car, I kiss them on the forehead, look them in the eyes and say, “Be who you were created to be.” They finish the quote with, “And I’ll set the world on fire!” You and your kids can have a verse from scripture or a phrase that reinforces your love for them, your family identity, or a character trait you want to see grow in them.

10

Have a letter-writing session. Take one afternoon each school year to write letters. Write one to each of your children reminding them what you love about them and how you’ve seen them grow over the past year. The kids write a letter to themselves to set goals and share what they love about being this age. Bonus idea: If your school has an All Pro Dad chapter, encourage your husband to attend at least one chapter meeting. It’s a great way for him to invest time in your kids and show them he loves them. Visit www.allprodad.com/parents to find a chapter or learn how to start one at your child’s school. What would you add to this school year bucket list? What school traditions do you have with your kids? k

Turkey on the Table

D

id you know that gratitude is a learned behavior? Turkey on the Table® is a book & activity that encourages the whole family to express and display their gratitude. The goal is to turn thankfulness into a daily routine. As parents, we want to instill values in our children that help them understand and appreciate all of life’s blessings. Cultivating a grateful heart helps create a happy child! The adorable knit turkey comes with paper feathers for the family to fill out with what they are thankful for until the turkey is "fully dressed" and ready for

display. It makes an adorable centerpiece (perfect for the kids table!) and you can even dress up your turkey with fun accessories! The kit also comes with a book that teaches children about what it means to be grateful. With each turkey purchased, Turkey on the Table gives back 10 meals to the 1 in 7 people in the U.S. who are food insecure through its partnership with Feeding America. To-date they have donated over 1 million meals. k

Lucy believes there are so many reasons to be happy, especially when you wake up each day with views like these.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month Source: PACER

T

his October, students, parents, schools and communities will observe National Bullying Prevention month. This month-long celebration unites individuals across the U.S. – and the world – with the powerful message: bullying should never be a part of childhood. Led by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, which founded National Bullying Prevention month in 2006, this is an opportunity to raise awareness about bullying. “Bullying has a devastating impact on children, and can often cause long-term effects,” said Julie Hertzog, director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. “National Bullying Prevention Month is a wonderful opportunity to encourage everyone to act with kindness, acceptance and inclusion, and to show solidarity with the one in five students who report being bullied each year.” PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center offers age-appropriate resources

to help students, parents, educators, and community members address bullying. Opportunities to get involved include:

• Promote the

month on social media with a library of images.

• Celebrate Unity

Day on Wed., October 20. As the signature event of National Bullying Prevention month the call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange to send a universal message that bullying is never acceptable.

• Download the free, four-week student activity kit for use in K-12 classrooms or community settings. The activity kit

engages students with theme weeks and classroom projects.

• Download PACER’s three-part

handout series, Bullying Prevention 101: A Quick Guide. These quick guides provide elementary, middle and high school students and parents with a definition of bullying, the roles involved, and tips to address bullying behavior. k

For more information about National Bullying Prevention Month, and to access even more resources, visit our innovative website www.pacer.org for parents and professionals, middle and high school students, and elementary students.

PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, founded in 2006, actively leads social change to prevent bullying, so that all youth are safe and supported in their schools, communities, and online. WarnerMedia Kids & Family Greenlights Tom and Jerry Time for Cartoonito on HBO Max and Cartoon Network Iconic Cat and Mouse Duo Star in their First-Ever Preschool Educational Animated Series from Warner Bros. Animation “Based on the beloved classic that so many parents grew up with, Tom and Jerry Time introduces a whole new generation to these iconic characters with a fresh and original take,” said Amy Friedman, Head of Kids and Family Programming, Warner Bros. “For our youngest audience, Sam Register and his team at Warner Bros. Animation managed to keep all the playful hijinks, drop all the cartoon violence, and add the most delightful early childhood learning through song and story. It’s playful – with a purpose – and we think parents and their little ones will love watching and learning together.”

Presented as a series of animated musical shorts, Tom and Jerry Time turns the world created by the biggest rivalry in all of animation into a fun and cheerful cartoon classroom. Both characters, known for their over-the-top personalities, are natural-born teachers, with Tom showcasing confidence and resilience while Jerry highlights ingenuity and courage. Preschoolers will be introduced to their comical mischiefs – chasing, pranking, and outsmarting each other – while also learning key social and emotional skillsets, lessons in independence, early math and literacy skills, and other key preschool educational concepts. k
