The Power of Forgiveness & Gratitude
O
WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy
n holidays like Thanksgiving, we are much more conscious of the practice of “giving thanks.” But, did you know that forgiveness is not only the gateway to living an attitude of gratitude, but a practice that brings you and your family closer to each other… and closer to true and lasting happiness?
8
Forgiveness is like a key that opens the door to your heart, lets love and light shine in, and allows gratitude to replace bitterness, wellbeing to replace dis-ease. Many are unaware that forgiveness is an act of self-love and care, and rarely has to do with other people. We do not have to condone the actions or words that hurt us in order to forgive. Through forgiveness, we can learn to practice true, unconditional love and appreciation for ourselves, others, and the very life that supports us. What better way to “give thanks” than that?
• Forgiveness is an inside job. Holding
Forgiveness is one of the most powerful tools you can offer your children to ensure they lead a life of pure joy and full of blessings. Here are 5 practices or understandings that will benefit you, as a parent, your children, and your family as a whole:
• Love yourself enough to forgive.
kiddos | October • November 2020
onto grudges or remaining angry or negatively-charged keeps us imprisoned in our own bodies and minds. True happiness, peace and freedom (let’s not forget overall wellbeing and health) come from letting go of the past and its power over you. This is a vital component of self-care and self-love that releases us from blocks that keep us stuck. Teaching your children how to forgive, and why, sets them on a path with way less stress, anxiety and unhappiness into their adult lives.
Holding onto the pain of the past accumulates in our bodies and minds and eventually harms us and becomes illness. Love yourself enough to let go, forgive, and move on. Teach your children
that they deserve true happiness; and that anger does not serve them or their well-being. Encourage them to love themselves enough to make the choice to let go of painful thoughts of the past. (Hint: holding on doesn't prevent the pain, it keeps it active and close to home)
• Forgive easily, forgive often. Lead
by example. Practice what you teach your children. Let upsets roll off your shoulders, and move on with peace and love as the driving force in your family. Offer forgiveness for mistakes made, or feelings hurt, and replace the habit of anger with that of understanding and compassion (and while you're at it, offer apologies and acknowledgments when you may hurt others’ feelings, whether intentional or not, invoking an opportunity to receive forgiveness from them).
• Recognize the good. Being
understanding and compassionate allows us to recognize that everyone is doing the best they can in any given moment. That includes your spouse and your children.. and you! Be gentle with yourself and others. Wrongdoings are often a result of inner pain and turmoil. They’re really not personal. Be aware of this, and remember: every act is an act of love or a cry for love. Sometimes, when people, or our children, are suffering, they seek love but don’t know how to get it. Recognizing this and the good in others, and extending compassion, opens your heart and mind and allows you to forgive easily and often. Teaching your children to recognize these lessons ensures that they will be resilient, caring and kind with others and themselves.
• Open your heart to Love and
Gratitude. Compassion and understanding - opening your heart to see the good - are ways to practice “priming.” Priming is a conditioning that allows you to recognize, accept and receive the good life has to offer you (you're being primed to notice and receive miracles!). Letting go of all the baggage, and forgiving, allows us the space (think: declutter) to fill ourselves up with the good stuff. If we are focused on the negative, we may miss all the positive things right in front of us. But, instead, if we expect good feelings and good things to occur, we
witness and allow the miracles to unfold before us. A grateful heart allows us to experience life in a new way; presently, gently and aware. Showing our children what gratitude is really about and how to practice it daily, (not just on Thanksgiving!) deepens the bond of family and brings everyone closer, more connected, in a purely loving way.
• Grief…and Forgiveness. The holidays
can be an especially painful time when there is someone missing from the dinner table and many families lost loved ones due to the recent pandemic. It’s not just an empty seat…it’s an empty feeling in the heart. Be sure to practice forgiveness
as part of the grieving process. Forgive your loved ones for passing on, forgive yourself for the words you didn't speak, forgive the situation for happening… no matter what pain it is you're holding onto, forgive. Honor your loved one, and the love you shared between you, by gently releasing any negative attachments or feelings, and try to replace them with love: set a picture of them nearby, say a prayer, invite them to be present with you in your heart during the holidays, or make time to share stories and memories about them. You can even begin a tradition to honor that special missing loved one during holidays. Perhaps you can bake their favorite pie or dish. And as you enjoy it, thank them for being such a beautiful part of your life. While it may seem trivial or perhaps difficult to do, practicing forgiveness (of yourself, the past, others) will give your family the opportunity to open your hearts, expand your minds, increase compassion and understanding, and allow for an attitude of gratitude to replace negative feelings. These are all benefits that far exceed those of holding onto anger or upset (remember, in that case you get to be right, but you don't get to be happy). Make the space in your hearts, in your home, and allow forgiveness to be the glue that holds you all together in love, acceptance and grace…this holiday, and always. k

e love dreaming up new healthy ways for families to enjoy Halloween. But let’s face it. Candy is part of the season. Kids are encouraged to trick or treat at school, at local community events, and then door-to-door. It can be great fun. However, if you’re not careful, your child might eat their own weight in candy (not fun). Too much candy can be a nightmare for your child’s dental health. There are smarter ways to celebrate, and you don’t have to ban trick-or-treating for your kids. Here are our tips for navigating the frightful Halloween season: Bad Versus Better Candy. The worst candies are sticky and gummy varieties because they are harder to clean away from teeth. Also, be careful with hard candies as they can actually break a tooth. Chocolate, and in particular dark chocolate, can be a safer choice. In addition there are several nut and fruit bars on the market which are lower in

Switch-Witchery. The Switch Witch is similar to the Tooth Fairy but for Halloween. It works like this: After all the trick-or-treating is done (and your kids have enjoyed some of their candy,) everyone gets ready for a visit from the Switch Witch. The friendly Witch pays a visit after bedtime and switches out bags of candy for a prize. The more candy a kid sets aside for the Witch, the better their prize will be. Be sure to tell your kids the story of the Switch Witch before Halloween so that they look forward to her arrival. sugar than most candy. Just be sure to check the ingredients on the label. Avoid extra sugar, overly processed foods, and chemicals. Healthy Snack Choices. The bacteria in our mouths consume the sugar in sweet treats and release acid, which can lead to tooth decay. A small amount of candy at Halloween may be fine, but there are many smart alternatives – fresh fruit likes apples and oranges, nuts, and veggies like carrots or sugar snap peas. Halloween is also a great time to prepare healthy treats with your kids. For example, try devilishly decorated deviled eggs, blood orange punch, pumpkin pancakes, or healthy Halloween cookies. Brushing and Flossing. Halloween provides an opportunity to remind kids about the importance of brushing and flossing. The goal is to minimize damage to teeth that can be caused by sugar. If your kids eat candy, be sure
Our final bit of advice is to have fun, be safe, and be healthy. Oh, and say hello to the Switch Witch if you see her. Our final bit of advice is to have fun, be safe, and be healthy. Oh, and say hello to the Switch Witch if you see her. After have fun, wear a mask. k

Rather than venturing out to look for a costume, get creative at home with everyday craft supplies and delivery boxes to make unique, low-cost costumes – or “boxtumes.” Not only are boxtumes a simple way to save money by upcycling delivery boxes you’ve accumulated, but making them can be a fun activity for the whole family. Your creations can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like. Turn an everyday hero into a Halloween superhero this year with a DIY Fire Truck Boxtume, or make it a duo costume perfect for siblings by adding a DIY Fire Hydrant Boxtume to match. With Amazon Prime’s fast, free shipping, any crafting supplies or candy you may need – and the box for your DIY creation – could be just one order away. Traditional family activities like trick-or-treating create fun moments and memories, but the effects of COVID-19 on this Halloween will bring about change for the spooky excitement.
ou can still ensure a special night for your little ones and all the ghouls, goblins and ghosts in your neighborhood by following safety measures aimed at keeping everyone healthy on All Hallows’ Eve. Consider these tips for safe trickor-treating from the experts at the National Safety Council and leading candy maker, Mars Wrigley.
Before
• Buy individually wrapped candy to
hand out to trick-or-treaters. Fun-size packs are one of the easiest forms of candy for trick-or-treaters to grab and go.
16
kiddos | October • November 2020
• Create fun, individual candy
goody bags for a no-touch option for trick-or-treaters. • Make sure your yard is well-lit; replace any burnt-out light bulbs. • Create signs encouraging trick-ortreaters to stay 6 feet apart and display them in your yard. • Don’t hand out treats if you are not feeling well. • Consider socially distanced options such as “trunk-or-treating,” during which prepackaged goodies are handed out, or a virtual costume parade. Alternately, you can use a tool like Mars Wrigley’s “TREAT TOWNTM,” an appbased digital experience for families to virtually trick-or-treat for real candy.
It offers Halloween fans of all ages the ability to create personalized spooky avatars, customized decorations for your in-app “door” and the ability to “knock” on the doors of friends and family across the country. • Visit Treat-Town.com to find more information.
During
• Make trick-or-treating care packs
with hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and extra face masks. • Help little ones clean their hands throughout the night. • Maintain a distance of 6 feet from other groups of trick-or-treaters, allowing one group to collect candy at a time.

fun
Match Pumpkins And Smiles • Wear face masks and reflective tape or
clothing and carry flashlights or glow sticks if you’re walking in the dark. • Do “mask checks.” Stop in a safe place and make sure young children’s masks are covering their mouths and noses. • Use sidewalks and crosswalks. Don’t cross the street between cars and be as visible as possible as drivers may be distracted. • Consider setting up a grab-and-go “candy corner” for visitors, inclusive of hand sanitizer and treats.
After
• Wash your hands when you get home. • Sanitize candy wrappers before eating or let it sit for 24 hours. • Follow the “when in doubt, throw it out” rule. Throw away any candy that is open, ripped or has torn packaging, an unusual appearance or pinholes. Discard any homemade items made by people you don’t know. • Watch for choking hazards. If you have a young child, make sure candy he or she collected isn’t a choking hazard. If it is, discard it. • Keep candy away from pets, especially chocolate and sugar-free gum, which can be poisonous for your furry friends.
If you’re staying home to hand out treats to the superheroes, ghosts, princesses and other little guests that arrive on your doorstep, consider these ideas to encourage safety and fun: • Minimize the number of hands reaching into a bowl. Find fun, hands-free ways to give candy to trick-or-treaters. You can place candy on your lawn or driveway, so trick-or-treaters don’t have to crowd around your front door, touch handrails or knock. • Move out of the way any items that children could trip over and keep pets inside. • Stand outside when handling treats, wear a mask and use hand sanitizer often. Consider keeping a large bottle of sanitizer near you for visitors to use as well. • Allow one small group at a time at your door. • Give out one set of treats at a time to minimize hands reaching into a common bowl. k

Loews Miami Beach Hotel is “Welcoming You Like Family” Now, More Than Ever Positioning is rooted in a commitment to the care and comfort of guests, drawing on Loews’ dedication to intuitive service, authenticity and familial hospitality
L
oews Miami Beach Hotel confirms its commitment to making guests feel safe, protected and cared for with “Welcoming You Like Family,” a fresh brand position which defines Loews as more than simply a collection of hotels, but a brand deeply rooted in welcoming and caring for guests like family. “Welcoming You Like Family” captures the powerful feeling of familiarity and comfort, which characterizes the Loews guest experience and is a philosophy that guides service and operations at Loews Miami Beach Hotel, while uniting the 26 Loews hotels and resorts across North America. For a guest at Loews Miami Beach Hotel, this means experiencing intuitive service that meets their individual needs with a certain level of
informality, just like family. And, for a Loews team member, it means delivering personalized service and being empowered to go above and beyond to ensure each guest leaves feeling part of the Loews family, whether it is their first stay or their tenth. “There couldn’t be a better time to stand behind what makes Loews Miami Beach Hotel distinctive in the region, and we understand that currently the future of travel is contingent on how our guests feel and are cared for,” said Mutluhan Kucuk, Managing Director, Loews Miami Beach Hotel. “While important, guest comfort needs to go beyond communicating cleaning protocols and statistics. Our team members within the Loews Miami Beach Hotel family are well versed in finding opportunities to connect with and care for guests, even in our currently physically distanced environment. Through ‘Welcoming You Like Family’ we look forward to serving our guests and each other thoughtfully and intuitively, just like family.”
Loews is further defining its positioning through a revision of messaging across the brand website, digital advertising, within the hotel guest experience and via earned media channels, as well as through a refreshed visual identity. Additionally, “Welcoming You Like Family” will become the name of Loews Miami Beach Hotel’s new and enhanced protocols and standards. On property the new positioning is further reflected as part of the “new normal” with thoughtful signage, touchpoints and services which guide guests safely, and comfortably, throughout their stay. For example, in order to support physical distancing without sacrificing human connection at the hotel, Chat Your Service is a hotel-wide texting service that makes it easy for guests to request whatever they might need during their stay. Whether a guest needs a restaurant reservation, the AC turned up, or extra hangers, they can be in touch with a team member immediately via text.
To jumpstart travel and experience “Welcoming You Like Family,” Loews Miami Beach Hotel invites families to book their next getaway with the Third Night Free offer, which features a complimentary third night when booking a two night stay. k

Interview with Eglee Nunez-Sancristobal, Principal of STARS Global Preparatory k
A new private non-profit school to prepare students for high school through community engagement. learning styles. The S.T.A.R.S. Autism program was founded 10 years ago when I saw a huge need with our Autism population. Honestly, I felt like I could make a difference. Fast forward 10 years later, my heart saw the need for typical developing students to attend a school that was not only focused on academic rigor but developing the next generation of learners.
KM KM
What inspired you to open STARS Global Preparatory School? ENS-I realized that none of the schools in Miami-Dade offer service-learning as a component of the school curriculum or as an extended day model. There is a clear need for a high performing school that will serve students that are on the waiting list or are in a low performing school. In recent times, students are going outside of their neighborhood for schooling or are staying home and registered in the Florida Virtual Home School courses. This means that parents want a better option for their children. Not only are we about educating the minds and hearts of our students, but we collaborate with scholarship programs and donors that facilitate tuition assistance for all our students.
KM
STARS Global Preparatory offers parents a specialized STARS Autism Program. How do you optimize the learning experience for children with special needs at your school? ENS-S.T.A.R.S. (Support The Autism Road to Success) Autism Program is one that I hold close to my heart. As a Special Education Florida Certified teacher, my heart has always and continues to be in helping students learn even with different

What is the mission for STARS Global Preparatory for this 2020/2021 school year? ENS-The vision of STARS Global Preparatory (“STARS Global”) is to prepare all graduates academically and personally to lead and serve with people from different backgrounds and learning styles. Our mission is to prepare students to become active, global citizens committed to a life of community engagement and democratic participation through academically rigorous culture of service.
KM
STARS Global Preparatory is based on a service-learning model. Share how this makes your school different from others and the benefits of service-learning.
ENS-At STARS Global we are serious about helping young people change the world. Our goal is to unleash the creative and intellectual potential of young people to help solve the world’s toughest problems. We are making a radical paradigm shift from preparing learners for a career 10 years from now to making a difference in the world, right here, right now. We will encourage students to become innovators and problem solvers who directly shape the world around them as part of their education, becoming stewards of their own learning journey.
KM
STARS Global Preparatory was recognized with the Drexel Fund Fellowship, how will this start-up endorsement impact the school and your mission? ENS-Having Drexel Fund Fellowship pick me was a huge accomplishment. It meant that my passion and drive for STARS Global and education was on the right path.
