KILLARNEY WELCOMES YOU

A message from Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce...

Killarney is recognised as a world class tourism destination, celebrated as a place to live, to do business and to visit all year round. Locals refer to Killarney as the town in the park and the park in the town. It is a very apt description – the bustling town centre is only a stone’s throw from the entrance to the National Park.

Killarney is Ireland’s premier tourism destination. Its natural beauty has been welcoming tourists for over 250 years. The National

Park is the jewel in the crown, its thousands of acres of natural woodland are surrounded by the world-famous lakes and Ireland’s highest mountain range, the MacGillicuddy’s Reeks. We know how to welcome visitors and everywhere you go you will be assured of warmth and friendliness. This natural playground offers something for everyone; adrenaline junkies might climb Ireland’s highest mountain Carrauntoohil, kayak across the lakes, or cycle

along the many mountain trails. Those looking for a more tranquil time will enjoy walks in the park with awe-inspiring views and visits to historic buildings such as the majestic St Mary’s Cathedral and Killarney House within both the park and the town itself. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings or perhaps take a leisurely boat ride or traditional jaunting car.

Shopping is a must along the quaint streets and laneways. Enjoy lunch or dinner from

Muckross Abbey was built as a Franciscan Friary to cater for the Franciscans who are still a familiar part of the town.

A BRIEF TIMELINE OF KILLARNEY’S HISTORY

Ross Castle was built by the ruling O’Donoghue Mór. Legend has it that O’Donoghue still slumbers under the waters of the lake and rises on his magnificent white horse.

Muckross Abbey was burned down by Cromwellian forces in 1654, and today remains a ruin while Ross Castle was the last place in Munster to hold out against Cromwell.

award-winning haute cuisine restaurants to lively traditional pubs.

Killarney also lays claim, justifiably, to the events capital of Ireland. A proactive Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, backed up by a host of sports and community clubs, means there is something on in Killarney every weekend.

Killarney really comes alive in the run-up to St Patrick’s Day on March 17th, and that vibrancy holds sway until the much-loved Christmas in Killarney festival each December. In between, Killarney hosts many major events like the Wander Wild great outdoors festival. It is the only town in Ireland to celebrate the 4th of July, and BikeFest, an internationally-recognised motorcycle jamboree.

The town is an ideal base for exploring the outer reaches of County Kerry and day trips along the Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way are easily achievable. But above all else, if it is one thing that Killarney and its people do best, then it is hospitality, and you will be certain of a warm welcome everywhere you go.

AWARDS

PURPLE FLAG – 2014- PRESENT

This internationally recognised symbol means that towns that fly the Purple Flag are considered safe at night time. It is the gold standard for town centre nightlife and exceptionally high requirements are expected before a town is awarded Purple Flag designation.

TIDY TOWNS

A group of volunteers led by the Killarney Tidy Towns and the Killarney Looking Good committee and supported by the Town Council’s street staff ensure that Killarney is looking its best 12 months of the year. Killarney always features near the top of the charts when the annual Tidy Towns awards are announced and in 2022, Killarney was deemed the tidiest town in Kerry.

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL MEDIA

Don’t take our word for it - the media and tourism specialists rate Killarney as a must-visit destination. Killarney recently won The Irish Independent ‘Reader Travel Awards’ 2023 while CIE Tours named three Killarney hotels in its 2023 annual awards list. The Ring of Kerry was named as one of only eight places in Ireland in Lonely Planet’s ‘Ultimate Travel List’.

Killarney becomes a tourist destination in 1750 when Lord Kenmare saw the value of the locality’s beauty and started to offer extended leases on inns and hotels.

The railway’s arrival further expanded the town’s tourism offerings. Prior to the railway there were only three hotels in the town but by 1854 that expanded to seven hotels.

Queen Victoria’s royal tour in 1861 cemented Lord Kenmare’s vision of over one hundred years previous. The British monarch’s visit in 1861 put Killarney on the world map.

The Vincent family gifted Muckross House and Gardens to the Irish nation and this created Ireland’s first National Park.

The McShain family donated Killarney House, Ross Castle and 8,000 acres of parkland to the State, further expanding the National Park.

WE ARE...KILLARNEY 2023 I 7

Killarney is jam packed with big personalities, bold characters and interesting people.

Small business owners, community figures, or well-known national sports stars. These are the people who help our town to grow and thrive. The theme of our magazine this year is ‘We Are Killarney’, a homage to the people, places and things in our town that make it so special. We want you to have the most authentic experience while staying in Killarney and to explore it like we do! With that in mind we went out and asked some locals what they love about Killarney and what they would recommend to someone visiting our beautiful town for a few days…

Peter O’TOOLE Former Park Ranger & Photographer

I have lived all my life in Killarney and was lucky to have worked in Killarney National Park as a Conservation Ranger for forty years. I have many favourite places in the 10,000 hectares of the Park. There is a variety of habitats to explore, but for me it is hard to beat a day on Killarney’s beautiful lakes. From Ross Castle on the shores of Lough Leane one can take a boat to the historic Innisfallen Island, from there sail to the beautiful O’Sullivans Cascade in Tomie’s Oak Woodland and that is only the beginning of a day long trip exploring the many scenic and historic sites around the lakes.

Cllr Niall KELLEHER Mayor of Killarney

On October 2nd 2016 I asked Linda Gordon to marry me as we stood on the Old Weir Bridge and, thankfully, she said ‘yes’ so the famous Gap of Dunloe boat trip will always be very special. As an attraction it has everything, including fantastic views of the lakes and mountains and learning all about the history of the lakes from the great characters on the boats – even if some of the stories told are taller than Ross Castle itself!

Seeing the Meeting of the Waters in person is something everybody should do at least once in their life and the pony and trap journey through the Gap before enjoying a little tipple at the end of it all is an experience I would really recommend.

Jordan LEE Irish Paralympic High Jumper

I love so many things about Killarney. It’s really hard to single out certain places or locations. I personally love going to Iguana’s Cafe after a hard session to get a lovely iced caramel latte while going for a recovery walk down to Ross Castle. The Plaza Hotel is also one of my favourite places to grab a bite to eat on a rest day. Located right next to the National Park, it couldn’t be in any better of a location to go for a nice walk afterwards.

As a world class tourism destination and thriving business community, Killarney has so much to offer.

The diverse natural landscape offers a world of adventure so whether you want to paddle board the lakes, run wild in the forests with the kids, challenge your friends to climb Ireland’s highest mountain range or simply sit quietly by the lakeside, we have the experience for you.

Family activities, cycling in the National Park, pony trekking, jaunting car rides, deer spotting, trails, tours, shopping, wellness, entertainment and more. Embrace the vibrancy and fun of Killarney’s social scene in the best of Ireland’s bars, restaurants and music venues. Your biggest problem will be choosing which ones to visit.

Self-Guided

Killarney National Park is best seen on bike (especially if you are short on time).

Tours

Be sure to do at least one local tour to get a good feel for the history and culture. Book when you arrive (we recommend a boat tour).

Food

and Drink

Friday and Saturday are the locals’ favourite nights to eat out and visit the pub. If you don’t like it too busy head out a bit earlier in the evening!

Shopping

Remember to ask the shop assistant if their outlet provides VAT-free shopping. Many retailers offer this to visitors from outside of an EU country.

Killarney people are friendly and approachable – don’t be afraid to chat to the locals if you are looking for tips and advice!

THE GAP OF DUNLOE The story of The Gap of Dunloe captured in book form

The history of The Gap of Dunloe area is best told in Mary Coghlan’s excellently researched book ‘Echoes of Dunloe’.

Published in 2019, it traces the history of The Gap of Dunloe from its people, geology, mythology and legends.

Mary spent her working life as a teacher in Macroom but returned to her childhood home while recovering from a serious illness and that is when she decided to write the first comprehensive book on the area. Her family are steeped in the history and tradition of The Gap area; her great-greatgrandfather built Kate Kearney’s Cottage and her nephew Sean Coffey now runs the famous tourist tavern.

The book runs at over 300 pages; it tells the story of the region from when the mountains in the area were first formed right up to the modern day.

The red sandstone in the area is said to be over 360 million years old – making the MacGillicuddy’s Reeks older than the Alps!

The famous gap in the rocks was formed 20,000 years ago and there is evidence that the first farmers fished in the area some 6,000 years ago.

Nearly 900 years ago the first castle – a timber-framed building - was built in 1206, before a stone castle was built in 1215.

However, the castle was razed during the Desmond Rebellion of 1568 to 1573 and 1579 to 1583 and all that remains are three walls – still visible today on the grounds of the Dunloe Castle Hotel and Gardens.

The Liebherr family, owners of the container crane factory in nearby Fossa, bought the castle in 1960 and built a five-star hotel on its grounds.

Britain’s Oliver Cromwell confiscated lands in the area in 1652.

By 1800, the first attempts at building a road through The Gap had begun.

Donal Moore Moriarty built, in 1849, what is today known as Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

The first motor cars to cross The Gap road did so in 1901. British racing driver Charles Jarrott and two of his racing friends, Harvey Du Cros and Roger Fuller took part in the Irish Automobile Club’s 1901 Tour of Ireland.

They said that Moll’s Gap did not present enough of a challenge and went in search of something more exciting.

While staying in Killarney they decided to have a crack at The Gap of Dunloe road and despite a number of incidents along the way, including driving through a lake, Du Cros’s Panhard’s radiator overheating and a local using a stone to scrawl his name in the expensive paintwork of the same car, they made it to the top alive.

There is a plaque on the south-facing gable of Kate Kearney’s Cottage commemorating the brave motorists’ historic achievements. Ironically, the area was both one of the first and last to get electricity in Ireland.

The rural electrification scheme ran from 1948 to 1965 and homes close to Kate Kearney’s were connected to the national grid by 1956.

However, residents deeper into the Black Valley had to wait until 1978 to get electricity – the last part of Ireland to get electrified. The book costs €25 with all proceeds going to the Cork-based Marymount Hospice. It is available locally in O’Connor’s Newsagents, Beech Road, The Dungeon Bookshop, College Street and Kate Kearney’s Cottage, Gap of Dunloe.

Alternatively, it is available directly from Mary (plus post and packaging) by emailing: mccoghlan@hotmail.com.

KATE KEARNEY’S COTTAGE FROM MOONSHINE TO SUNSHINE

Moonshine, Poitín, Mountain Dew - call it what you will, but illegal booze is wrapped in the history and folklore of nearly every corner of the world.

One of Killarney’s most famous landmarks, at the entrance to The Gap of Dunloe, can trace its 250-year-old history to illegal booze.

Kate Kearney’s Cottage first operated as a síbín around the time of the famine in the 1840s.

Kate, said to be a very beautiful woman, served her own form of Poitín to the weary traveller who passed her door.

Poitín is a form of ‘Irish Moonshine’ and although it continues to be distilled under cover (you just need to know where to look), it remains illegal to this day. The drink is so strong that it can be sometimes

produced with up to 90 percent alcohol content. The Gaelic word for a hangover is derived from the word póit!

Kate Kearney lived in her now famous cottage before the Great Famine of 1845 to 1849.

Her self-distilled and largely potent brew was known as ‘Kate Kearney’s Mountain Dew’.

Her enterprise got her in trouble with the law but she continued, undeterred, to serve the explosive drink to passersby. It was so strong that it needed seven times its own volume in water to offset its strength. It is not clear today if the

passing travellers were merely passers-by or if they had deviated from their chosen route to sample the delights of the famous Mountain Dew.

Regardless, Kate Kearney’s Cottage remains as a public house today. Situated at the gate of The Gap of Dunloe, it is an ideal base for exploring the local mountain passes or to while away a few hours in silence.

The current owner is Sean Coffey who is a great-great-great-grandson of Julia and Donal Mór Moriarty. The Moriarty family took over the cottage and pub following Kate’s passing.

Sean and his family continue that tradition today. Food is served daily, and the bar offers welcoming refuge from all weathers but on a fine sun-shiny day there is no better place to sit than in the pub’s outdoor section.

The area around The Gap of Dunloe and further over into hamlets of Beaufort and Kilgobnet are renowned for maintaining Irish traditional music and locals can be found in the bar every night with a fiddle and accordion or two.

A day in Kate Kearney’s and the wider Gap region is a day well spent even if sourcing a glass of Kate’s famous Dew might prove a little difficult in this day and age!

PAT FALVEY EXPLORER,ADVENTURERAUTHOR,

Pat Falvey’s story reads something like a movie script.

It all started with his first business at six years of age, selling second hand clothes with his grandmother. She’s a woman that to this day he speaks very fondly of saying “she gave me the confidence and encouragement to believe I could do or be anything I wanted in life”.

At 15, his father’s business had failed and times were very tough. Pat left school to become a millionaire, the goal was to ensure his family would never fall in to the same hardships again. He started work as a bricklayer.

By the age of 20 Pat had achieved his goal. A big house, flashy cars and no financial worries. There is a saying in Ireland that goes a little like “he has more money than sense” and after acquiring so much wealth at such a young age, Pat, self-admittingly got too big for his boots and made some bad decisions.

“I thought I had the Midas touch, the truth is I didn’t even know who Midas was, the ego had gotten the better of me and just shy of my 30th birthday, I had managed to lose it all, I went broke.”

The impact of everything getting swept from underneath him was devastating. He lost his self-esteem, fell into depression and ultimately tried to take his own life.

On the advice of a friend, Pat was encouraged to take up hillwalking as a form of therapy. In 1986 he did his first ascent of Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil. He was so excited that on the same day he professed he was going to climb Mt. Everest. Well, the rest is history!

Since then, his life has taken an extraordinary trajectory, both as an explorer but also as an entrepreneur, life coach and motivational speaker.

With a renewed outlook and focus, but with the same drive, ambition and self-belief that was instilled into him by his grandmother

all those years ago, Pat set up his world-renowned adventure business; Irish and Worldwide Adventures, where he now leads treks and expeditions in Kerry and around the world.

Since then, he has climbed Ireland’s highest mountain - Carrauntoohil over 3,000 times, led over 185 international expeditions and treks around the world. In fact, Pat was the first person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest from both the north and south side, including the seven summits (the highest point on each of the world’s seven continents) twice.

He has walked the South Pole in honour of his hero Tom Crean and has skied across Greenland and Norway, all the time endeavouring to find out the attributes of pushing oneself to their limits. Such is the dangers associated with many of these expeditions, Pat is keen to remember the 40+ friends who have died on these type of expeditions. While the physical challenge has always been important to him, Pat always sought answers to the bigger and more philosophical questions on his travels. Over his lifetime as an explorer Pat has worked and lived with 32 tribes of people, trying to understand what has driven man since the evolution of our species. When he is not leading treks here in Ireland and around the world, Pat is busy with pen and paper writing books and making films. He is the author of seven books, including his most recent memoir, The Accidental Rebel Pat’s last film, The Summit, has been viewed by over 70 million people around the world and he is currently in talks with production companies about the next projects. If you are fond of adventure and have a love

for the great outdoors, it’s hard not to stand back in awe of all that he has overcome and achieved. His life experiences are visible from the books he has written and on the walls of his mountain lodge in Beaufort, heroic pictures of a life dedicated to exploration. The Lodge, strictly only open to clients, is a treasure trove of adventure memorabilia from Pat’s adventures all over the world, but visitors come for that unrivalled experience and knowledge that he shares with secondto-none enthusiasm.

The mountain lodge in Beaufort is the ideal base for exploring the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and is the reason why so many people choose to stay with him when visiting Kerry. “We have everything from truck drivers to presidents come through our doors,” Pat explains. “I have been up Carrauntoohil 3,000 times. While training for Everest I would go up and down three times in a day. It is my favourite place in the world.”

As a motivational speaker, Falvey shares his experiences and encourages people to pursue their dreams. He is a world renowned inspirational speaker and has spoken at international corporate conferences and schools, inspiring audiences with his stories of determination and perseverance. He also runs a Team Build training company that helps teams communicate to work together effectively. One of Pat’s newest ventures is the Forever Young Club – a 50 PLUS Community which empowers members to develop active, healthy, sustainable lifestyles. These projects have led to another strand of his operation and The Lodge is now very much a retreat centre as it is a base for climbing. If you are looking for a truly unique and possibly life-changing experience while in Killarney, we recommend you get in touch with Pat!

A mini adventure for young and old through Ireland’s Lake District.

You can travel by boat through the majestic Lakes of Killarney and the National Park, during which you can enjoy the huge natural oak woodlands of the Upper Lake and the Old Weir Bridge, where the boat may be able to ‘shoot the rapids’. This leads you to the Meeting of the Waters, where the three lakes join, then under the Toothache Bridge into the Middle Lake, where you can see Torc Mountain and the Colleen Bawn Rock. You may be lucky on the day to catch a glimpse of the White Tailed Eagles soaring over the mountains, go under the Brickeen Bridge and into the Lower Lake where you can see Innisfallen Island, and in the distance Ross Castle – an ancient seat of the O’Donoghue Clan, where the tour finishes.

Joe O’Leary and Kevin Leahy are names synonymous with mountain running all over the world. Both are world pacesetters in their chosen disciplines and while they may have followed different career paths on their way to success, they share one common denominator: they began their adrenalinefilled careers in the Killarney hinterland. Killarney National Park is a natural playground for a trail runner, and while O’Leary and Leahy operate on the extreme levels of the sport, there is something for the beginner taking their first tentative steps in the world of offroad running or those looking for the bigger challenges.

O’Leary was a member of a four-person Kerry team that finished fourth in the six-day Adventure Racing World Championship in Gallaecia in 2022.

The 2021 World Championship was the most mountainous, the longest and the most technical edition of that race, covering 600km across three of the four provinces of Gallicia and passing near to the Portuguese border.

Sounds intimidating, but it is all part of a day’s work for O’Leary. Any man who grew up on the foothills of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks will, surely, have the confidence to take on the most difficult races in the world.

Locally, adventure racers are spoiled for choice with several events each year to suit all abilities and tastes.

The Kerry Way Ultra, held each September, is probably one of the most daunting races of its kind in Ireland. A 200km route from Killarney to the tip of the Iveragh Peninsula near Waterville and back, is tackled non-stop! The race gets underway at 6am on a Friday morning with the first runners due back almost 48 hours later.

The main event is only open to experienced trail runners but shorter 60km, 100km and relay races can also be entered by less experienced competitors.

Kevin Leahy is a past winner of the Yukon Arctic Ultra – billed as the world’s coldest and toughest race - where temperatures can dip as low as -50°C.

If that was not enough, 10 days after his Canadian success he tackled the Lapland Arctic Ultra, a race “through Europe’s last

wilderness”, a 500km epic that crosses the Arctic Circle several times.

How does he prepare for such challenges?

“I have been practising on the bogs near Kilcummin by pulling old Jeep tyres behind me,” he said just before his Canadian adventure.

If trail running is too much too soon, Kerry Orienteers run at least one event a month all over the county, but the majority are organised on courses within Killarney National Park. The club also runs introduction days and organises several street events during the year too – now that’s a different way to explore Killarney.

At the other end of the scale sits the Quest Series of multi-activity one-day adventure races. 500 adventurers compete in the Killarney race, making it the largest adventure race in the world.

There are five different routes including a 70km and 60km professional race, and a 27km sport event. Athletes trek the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Mangerton Mountain, before cycling The Gap of Dunloe, Black Valley and Killarney National Park, finishing with a kayak race on Muckross Lake.

WALKS EASY

If you feel like a nature escape then Killarney National Park is the perfect place to go to. There are a variety of trails and walks from laps

of the lakes to woodland areas and historical hikes; no two days in the Park or the town will be the same. We have selected our five favour-

ite rambles which offer both a newcomer and a regular visitor a snapshot of life in Killarney on foot.

KNOCKREER

Probably the best introduction to Killarney National Park, especially for those short on time, is Knockreer Walk.

1 2

ROSS CASTLE AND ISLAND

There is a labyrinth of paths that weave their way to and from Ross Castle and on to Ross Island.

The castle itself is an ideal starting point. It is only a 10-minute walk from the town centre but there is also ample parking adjacent to the 15th-century tower close to Lough Leane. The most popular walk on Ross Island is the much-loved Copper Mines Trail, passing a quarry that dates back over 4,500 years. The Copper Mines are situated on a secluded

bay on Lough Leane and offer views of Torc and Mangerton Mountains. Additional walking trails within the island complex include the hikes to Governor’s Rock or Library Point.

All trials are clearly signposted, as is the return leg to the castle.

Information boards scattered regularly throughout the trails tell the story of the area, its history, wildlife, and fauna.

There are several start and finishing points all close to the town centre including the Golden Gates on East Avenue and Deenagh Cottage with its distinctive thatched roof.

The loop is clearly signposted from both suggested starting points.

This walk will take ramblers to the shores of Lough Leane, across the open parkland to majestic views of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and it passes through the splendour of Knockreer House and Gardens. 20 I WE ARE... KILLARNEY 2023

For a completely different take on the surrounding mountains, and possibly an ideal beginner’s attempt at going up, it is recommended that visitors try the walkway at Torc Mountain.

There is a wooden gangway for most of the climb to the 525 metre summit, but be careful as the sleepers can be slippery when wet and this climb does require some degree of fitness – locals call it Cardiac Hill for a reason – but it is officially known as the Huntsman’s Trail (follow the red signs).

However, with the effort comes reward as the

OLD KENMARE ROAD

If this walk is to be attempted in full it will need some logistical planning because after a full day’s hike you could find yourself in Kenmare with no way back to the Killarney starting point some 30 kilometres away. The official starting line is in Killarney town centre where walkers are encouraged to hike out to the second point at Torc (see above). The trail runs parallel to the N71 Moll’s Gap Road and at limited points it does encroach on the main road so beware of traffic, especially coaches.

Those not in the mood for a hike through the valley, and all the way to Kenmare, could choose to end their walk at Derrycunnihy Church.

This is one of the recommended locations to leave a second car to allow walkers a return to Killarney. However, beware as the church is said to be haunted and the ghost of Derrycunnihy is believed to sit in the back seats of passing cars as she tries to make her way back to her real home!

To find the start, follow the N71 towards Kenmare and take the first left 400m after the main entrance to Muckross House (Old Kenmare Road). Follow this road for approximately 1.7km to Upper Torc car park. Alternatively, stay on the main road and start at the Lower Torc car park at Torc Waterfall.

TOMIES WOOD

Tomies Wood is a relatively new addition to Killarney’s trail catalogue.

It was previously only accessible by boat from the Ross Castle side of Lough Leane. However, after years of campaigning by local councillors, a new pedestrian access was opened on the Gap of Dunloe side in very recent years.

This walk, through the beautiful oak forest, is as enchanting as it is beautiful.

The trail leads to O’Sullivan’s Cascade, a spectacular waterfall that empties the water off

summit offers spectacular views of Killarney town and lakes, Muckross House, Killarney National Park and the MacGillicuddy’s Reeks. While there are many starting points on this loop walkway, we recommend starting at the car park near Torc Waterfall.

There are several other walks and hikes accessible from this car park including Torc Loop (blue signs), and Torc Loop (yellow signs).

The parking area also offers an alternative entry point into the National Park and the upper reaches of Muckross House and Gardens.

the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and into Lough Leane.

Hidden just off the trail are the ruins of Glena Cottage which sits on the lake shore. One of the cottage’s most famous group of visitors over the years was the British Royal Family in August 1861.

The royal party included Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Edward Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), Prince Alfred, and Princesses Alice and Helena.

House & Gardens KILLARNEY

Gateway to the National Park

Killarney is the place that launched a billion postcards. And now that postcards are a dying art form, it’s becoming the place that launched a billion tweets, Facebook posts and Instagram pics.

At the heart of it all is the majestic Killarney National Park, which has attracted visitors and tourists for well over 250 years. The Park covers 26,000 acres and includes the Muckross and Kenmare Estates, and stunning Lakes of Killarney.

The Park contains a unique combination of picturesque lakes, mountains, ancient woodlands, wildlife and antiquities. This varied landscape includes the most extensive native woodlands in Ireland, lakes, rivers, blanket bog and heathland. It is home to a collection of plants and animals that live nowhere else in Northern Europe: Strawberry Tree, Kerry Slug, Irish Spurge, St Patrick’s Cabbage and the Killarney Fern. Killarney House dates from the 1700s and was originally the stable block of the first residence of the Earls of Kenmare, the

Browne family, but in the late 1950s it was bought by ‘The Man Who Built Washington’, Philadelphia’s John McShain, and his wife, Mary. It became the Irish home for the McShains and their daughter, Sr Pauline McShain. The family gifted Killarney House and its estate to the Irish people, to be incorporated into the Killarney National Park. The house and gardens have been carefully restored to their former glory and today you can enjoy a tour of the historic rooms and take in the beauty of the extensive pleasure gardens.

The new interpretive exhibition is now the gateway to Killarney National Park, and will lead you to discover more about this beautiful and diverse landscape and the work to protect it.

Our National Park is the best of our natural inheritance, to cherish and protect as a legacy for future generations. Come and enjoy our little piece of ‘Heaven on Earth’: discover Killarney House and its beautiful gardens.

Let’s talk about Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co.…

Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. is home to Ireland’s largest independently owned and co-located brewery, distillery, and visitor centre. They have been producing great tasting quality beers since 2015 at their original micro-brewery on Muckross Road and recently launched the next chapter of their journey with a custom built campus just outside Killarney. We caught up with the team to get an inside scoop on what they are up to…

Give us an idea of the operation

Beautifully located on the picturesque Ring of Kerry on The Wild Atlantic Way and overlooking The MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and famous Lakes of Killarney, the new campus is 62,000 sq ft. The building structure and interiors are the product of master crafts men and women, architecturally designed to capture the timeless beauty of Killarney from every angle both indoor and outdoor. Visitors can see our brewers and distillers hard at work, enjoy dinner watching the night fall on Ireland’s highest peaks or sip a cocktail taking in the tranquillity of the Lakes of Killarney. Brewing in Ireland is a very vibrant place at the moment, is there pressure associated with that?

Part of our team culture, is an unyielding commitment to excellence in everything we do. Consumers have become very sophisticated in their tastes and standard of quality and service. Each team member strives to meet this with our award-winning beers, premium spirits, delicious food, cocktails and

warm friendly service.

Is there any automation in your brewhouse setup or are there a lot of manual tasks involved?

The brewhouse in our new campus allows for some automation that we did not have in Muckross Road. This results in more consistency in taste while also allowing our brewers to be more efficient and work in a safer environment. Our lean team of brewers are experts in this field and carry out their craft with mindful eyes to ensure every batch is of the same top quality. With skilled watchmen, this new equipment allows Killarney to produce four times the capacity of Muckross Road micro-brewery. We are striving to keep up with the new global demand for our Killarney beers. Killarney Brewing has turned their birthplace into an innovation hub exploring new flavours and varietals. Our brewers are beyond excited! Check out our Instagram page for exclusive small batch seasonal brews.

Have you ever had a bad batch? If so, how long did it take you to figure out what caused it and is this just all part of the process?

At Killarney, we are always on a journey of adventure, making bold choices and experimenting to deliver great tasting products. Be it new developments in hops that have exciting flavours or our locally grown Rowan berries used in our gin or the fanciful cocktails served at The Long Bar in Fossa, no such thing as a bad batch here, only some better than others! We are also constantly carrying out quality control checks checking batches and tasting them in our lab on site to ensure only perfection lands with our customers. Can you give a hint if anything new might be coming from Killarney Brewing Company in the near future?

Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. has always something new coming! Our passion is innovation, our uniqueness is our Master Brewer and Master Distiller working together to create something interesting for consumers to enjoy. We take inspiration from the monks who compiled The Annals of Innisfallen, capturing the story of progress through time and history in Ireland. Our collective belief is that life tastes better when lived a little bolder. We are about to launch our third edition in our 1092 Taproom series, a fine example of Killarney beer and whiskey in a limited release gift box pairing.

Describe the weirdest ingredient you have ever put in a full production beer. We love to explore and leverage local ingredients. Our first spirit to market is Killarney Heather Honey Gin. The honey is sourced from local beekeeper Toddy Clifford. Located just out the road from our new campus, Toddy nurtures his bees, who feed off the wild purple heather and make delicious honey. It makes for a great cocktail, especially our signature Negroni in the Long Bar in our new Visitor Centre. Our core gin is going through final development with many locally sourced botanicals in the recipe.

If you had to pick a favourite beer from Killarney Brewing Company and offer it to a stranger, which one would it be and why?

Emmm tough call as there are many! Kerr, our Master Distiller shouts a Killarney Blonde, full of flavour, very refreshing and great on its own or enjoyed with food. Mike, our Master Brewer shouts Killarney Full Circle, an IPA, not only because it’s one of his favourite styles of beer but also because it represents part of his life’s and brand’s story of moving back to Co. Kerry.

Why should visitors come and check out the brewery and what can they expect?

Friendly fun experience from the minute you walk in the door. The building is beautifully designed to capture a view from every angle both indoor and outdoor.

A warm welcome always awaits at Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. not to mention our Whiskey, Beers and Gin.

Killarney, haunt of Poets & Writers

literature and travel writing who spread the fame of the Killarney Valley through the written word.

Arthur Young, Dorothea Herbert, Mr & Mrs Hall, WB Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Brendan Behan are but a sample.

English poets of past centuries seem a universe away from Killarney when encountered in school text books. Imagine then the initial surprise of discovering that Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem ‘The Splendour Falls’ was inspired by our own Ross Castle and Lough Léin. There would have been no astonishment back in the 1700s and 1800s when Killarney natives were literally ‘tripping over’ visiting Romantic poets of the stature of Percy Bysshe Shelley (1813), William Wordsworth (1829) and Tennyson (1848).

RECOMMENDED BOOKS

Kay Caball’s The Kerry Girls: Emigration & the Earl Grey Scheme is the true story of 117 teenage girls sent out to Australia in 1849-1850 from workhouses in Kerry, under the auspices of the Earl Grey ‘Orphan’ scheme. It tells of their selection and transportation to New South Wales and Adelaide, and their subsequent attempts to rebuild a life far from home.

Breda Joy’s Hidden Kerry takes the reader on the less-travelled paths of the Kingdom, and is peopled with a varied cast of characters with colourful stories.

Wordsworth found fault with ‘the heavy shape of the highest hill, Mangerton’ when he climbed the mountain at the age of 59.

Shelley, writing from Italy in 1818, stated that Lake Como,‘exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty, with the exception of the arbutus islands of Killarney’.

Local Mike O’Sullivan has written of the visiting Romantics in detail in the excellent reference book, ‘Killarney: History and Heritage’ (The Collins Press, 2005) The poets are part of a rich and varied body of luminaries from the world of

‘The Four Kerry Poets’, Aodhagán Ó Rathaille, Seáfraidh Ó Donnchadha, Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin and Piaras Feirtéar, are commemorated by the Spéir Bhean sculpture opposite the Franciscan Friary.

The ink is still coursing through the town today. The bookshelves feature Eileen Sheehan, Margaret O’Shea, Meg McCarthy, Mary O’Gorman, Donal Hickey, Colm Cooper, Weeshie Fogarty, Colin O’Sullivan and moi, while many Killarney journalists feature locally and nationally.

Nik Hall’s book of stunning photographs, Beautiful Killarney: A Walk Through the National Park, is a chronicle of a walk from Killarney town to Ladies View. It would make a wonderful memento for visitors to the town.

The lavishly illustrated Killarney: History & Heritage traces Killarney’s history through a series of specially-commis sioned essays. An enjoyable, informative read for the general and more serious reader alike.

46 I WE ARE... KILLARNEY 2023

How can a town the size of Killarney produce not one, but two Oscar-nominated actors and Hollywood A-listers?

Both Jessie Buckley and Michael Fassbender call Killarney home.

Jessie grew up just outside the town in Muckross, while Fassbender hails from the village of Fossa, the first stop on the famed Ring of Kerry tourist route.

Their careers have taken similar paths but they have yet to appear on the silver screen in the same movie.

Buckley began her career in 2008 as a contestant on the BBC TV talent show ‘I’d Do Anything’, in which she came in second place. She made her film debut in 2017 as Moll Huntford in the psychological thriller ‘Beast’. Later the same year she starred in the Country Music film ‘Wild Rose’, but her big success story came in 2021.

Buckley starred as the younger version of Leda Caruso in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Lost Daughter’ and this is what earned her her first Oscar nomination.

Her Hollywood career is only starting according to those who know her best.

Orna Cleary of Killarney Musical Society, who nurtured a young Jessie as a child actor in Killarney, said she is “only in the infancy of her career”.

“She has a massive road ahead of her,” Orna says.

“It is only the beginning. I believe she is still in the early part of her career. Look at what she has achieved in the last four or five years, the movies she has starred in, the people she has performed with, she is only in the infancy of her journey.”

Fassbender made his feature film debut as a Spartan warrior in the fantasy war epic ‘300’ in 2006.

THAT SENT

Fassbender’s portrayal of Edwin Epps earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In the film adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s book ‘Steve Jobs’, Fassbender played the title role. His performance impressed enough for him to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Carrying on the fine tradition of acting in the

New Street.

The West End House School of Arts is based in the same building where his parents, Adele and Josef, operated a restaurant for many years.

“The vision for the school is for young people to come and explore the arts, to take risks, to challenge themselves, to fail to get back up again and then failing better the next time,” says Fassbender.

“We would love for students to come to Killarney and be part of West End House School of Arts and to experience the raw beauty and the cultural heritage that Killarney and the surrounding areas have to offer.”

Other grassroots efforts worth attending include regular plays by the Dóchas Drama Group. Their performances regularly fill Courtney’s Bar on Plunkett St or the Killarney Avenue Hotel on East Avenue.

With Killarney situated in the heart of Ireland’s largest National Park, the environment and sustainability are taken very seriously by the town’s tourism and allied industries. Some of the biggest and most innovative environmental projects in the country are spearheaded by local hotels and attractions.

The O’Donoghue Ring Collection operates several town centre hotels. The hotel group launched its ‘Our Green Ways’ initiative in 2020. This includes purchasing ingredients from local producers and suppliers, monitoring energy and water consumption and removing as much single-use plastic as possible from all areas of the Collection. A promoter of bio-diversity and the positive impact it has on our local crops, flora and fauna, the Collection has also welcomed beehives to its resident apiary located on the roof of Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa. This dedication to sustainability has led to the Collection’s biggest initiative: the creation of Ireland’s first hospitality hydroponic farm, Killarney Urban Farm. Located in the heart of Killarney town, Killarney Urban Farm grows a range of micro-greens, salads and vegetables which are pesticide free and grown at a hyper-local level, further servicing bars and restaurants across the locality.

The nearby Killarney Park and Ross Hotel has also introduced new environmentally

friendly ideas. It is one of the only hotel groups in Killarney to have a dedicated Sustainability Manager. Louise Byrnes’ job is to ensure sustainability remains a core value across both hotels. They are Certified Single-Use Plastic Free by Green Hospitality Ireland. Plastic drinking straws and cocktail stirrers are now made of metal and are reusable, as are the coasters. Guest amenities such as toothbrushes, earbuds, shower hats, and vanity kits are now either made with bamboo or biodegradable material. Bedroom plastic such as linen/ laundry bags, newspaper bags and guest carrier bags are no longer plastic and have been replaced by natural materials such as linen or paper. The hotel no longer uses plastic pedal bin liners and has introduced a recycling bin to all guest rooms. Managing Director Marcus Treacy sees the big picture when it comes to green initiatives in hospitality.

“The Killarney Park and The Ross Hotel are located in one of the most beautiful areas in the world,” he said. “Protecting

this amazing landscape and environment is extremely important to us. We echo the belief that sustainable tourism is tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts while addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities. Our goal is to meet the needs of our guests, staff members and local community without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Local adventure racer Kevin Leahy runs one of the best hostels in Killarney. Despite being on the budget scale of the accommodation offering in Killarney, The Black Sheep Hostel takes its green credentials very seriously. They produce 30% of electricity with onsite solar panels and the rest comes from external renewable sources. Out in the back garden of the property lays a 30-foot polytunnel where they grow their own vegetables and herbs. Visitors are not the only ones who stay at the hostel, The Black Sheep is home to a flock of chickens that

48 I WE ARE... KILLARNEY 2023

are mainly fed food waste from the hostel kitchen. The organic composting system is used to enrich the hostel’s garden and polytunnel. Waste is segregated throughout the hostel to reduce the amount going to land fill and owner Kevin loves to upcycle as you can see from their range of eclectic furniture.

Sustainability doesn’t stop with the accommodation providers however. Killarney Lake Tours offer boat trips and jaunting car trips around the Killarney National Park. Their marine vessel is ecofriendly with special drive systems which minimise any dangerous or damaging substances such as oil or fuel entering the water.

The boat also has low-wash characteristics which means that it does not create big waves behind it which can cause erosion and even frighten or injure wildlife. As the jaunting carts are not motorised and rely solely on horsepower, there are no harmful emissions released into the National Park.

KILLARNEY URBAN FARM

QUEST for SUCCESS

Adventure racing has become a very popular pastime in Ireland in recent years with more than 10,000 participants taking part in Quest events across the year.

Founded in 2011, Quest Killarney alone attracts over 2,500 adventure racers to the region every October.

An alternative to triathlons and the popular mass participation half-marathons and other runs on offer, adventure racing extends beyond the physical and fosters a great sense of camaraderie and fun as part of the races.

This epic adventure involves racers running and cycling through The Gap of Dunloe, Molls Gap, Black Valley, Ring of Kerry, Torc Waterfall, Devil’s Punchbowl, Mangerton Mountain and Muckross House as well as kayaking across Muckross Lake in Killarney National Park. With five routes to choose from there’s something to suit everyone (including a kayak-free course). Quest Adventure Races involve running, cycling and kayaking across various distances in remote, beautiful and challenging locations.

The first Killarney Adventure Race took place in 2011. Around 300 people tackled the event but little did they know it was a springboard for something much bigger. Today, Kerry-based Elite Event Management employ five full-time staff and process over 35,000 entry forms for their range of events that includes Quest Kenmare, Quest Glendalough, Quest Lough Derg and other events like Ride Dingle and the Ring of Beara Cycle.

IT ALL STARTED IN KILLARNEY

Oliver Kirwan is the local man behind the Quest Adventure series and he explained to us how it all started.

“When I moved down to Killarney we were travelling all over Ireland to similar events. I thought, Killarney, with the biggest National Park in the country, is made for these kinds of events, so we took a chance in 2011 and here we are today.”

From that humble beginning, Quest Killarney has grown to be the biggest event of its kind in the world.

“Nowhere else will you get 2,500 people running around enjoying the mountains, it’s a community of like-minded people out for an adventure.”

One of the beauties about Quest events is that there are courses and events to suit all tastes and levels of experience.

Quest Killarney offers four different challenges; Expert (83km), Pro (73km), Dual (65km), Sport (55km), and Challenge ( 27km). By offering a number of distances, people find the level that’s right for them.

“You don’t have to be a grizzled adventure racer to participate, you can dip your toe in with the 27km event, while the 40km events needs a bit more training, and the 70km races are for experts. Two of Killarney’s biggest names in the adventure racing world, Joe O’Leary and Kevin Leahy started their adventure racing career on Quest events and they are both still big supporters of our events.”

If you like a challenge and enjoy spending time in the outdoors, then Quest Killarney may be for you!

It comes as no surprise that the biggest adventure race in the world takes place in Killarney National Park.

The home of Gaelic Football

For any visitor to Ireland, taking in a traditional Gaelic football match is a ‘must’. And you don’t have to wait for an All-Ireland final in Croke Park (Dublin) to experience the frenetic pace and wild excitement of the nation’s favourite game, writes

Nowhere in the world is more Gaelic-football-crazy than Killarney, a town which boasts no fewer than three GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) clubs within the parish itself and many more in the wider East Kerry area.

Clubs host almost-nightly training sessions and matches across all age groups, from juvenile up to adult, so sampling some of the action is often as easy as turning up. As much entertainment can be gained from an under 12 local derby as you would get at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Munster Final day.

WHAT IS GAELIC FOOTBALL?

This centuries old game is physical and fast-paced and has been described as a mix between soccer, rugby and basketball, al-

though it can be more accurately compared to Australian Rules football.

Under the rules of the GAA, players cannot be paid for their services, and transferring from one team to another is frowned upon. This breeds a huge amount of loyalty within counties, towns and villages as families remain devoted to the same team from generation to generation.

Depending on where their parents’ allegiances lie, the footballers of Killarney line out for either Dr Crokes, the Killarney Legion, or Spa. Crokes and Spa both participate in the Kerry Senior Football Championship, the highest level of football in the county, while this year Legion will compete in the intermediate competition.

KERRY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Kerry SFC (aka the County Championship) is a 16-team, winner-takes-all competition featuring the best football sides in the county. In addition to the eight top-level ‘senior’ clubs, there are eight ‘divisional’ sides made up of the cream of the crop from the remaining smaller clubs in that particular division (e.g. South Kerry, West Kerry and Mid Kerry).

For instance, Legion’s top players also represent East Kerry, an amalgamation comprised of fellow non-senior clubs Fossa, Glenflesk, Kilcummin, Listry, Firies and Gneeveguilla. Led by star player David Clifford, East Kerry have claimed the Kerry Senior Football

Championship in 2019, 2020 and 2022, bringing to an end the period of dominance enjoyed by their neighbours, Dr Crokes, during the previous decade.

This season the Kerry SFC and other important games will take place in the second half of the year, from July up until the wintertime.

KERRY TEAM

The best club players in the county are chosen to represent the Kerry senior football team on the highest stage: the National League and the prestigious All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, which now runs from April to July.

The Kerry men’s team are the reigning champions and the most successful team in the history of Gaelic football with 38 All-Irelands to their name. As such, they are as synonymous with Gaelic football as Brazil are with soccer and New Zealand are with rugby. Dublin, whose population is nine times that of Kerry, are in second place on the honours list with 30 titles.

Killarney and the neighbouring parishes have produced some of the finest players to ever wear the famous green and gold, including the likes of Dick Fitzgerald, Johnny Culloty, Séamus Moynihan, and Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper.

Kerry matches are televised nationally and draw large attendances but, unusually, the players are not paid for their efforts. Despite being nationally-recognised superstars, Kerry’s footballers work day jobs as teach-

HIKING TO

THE ROOF OF IRELAND

The MacGillycuddy’s Reeks is Ireland’s highest mountain range, and it is part of a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) which is a European designation for sites that support rare and threatened habitats and species. The Reeks contain protected habitats such as the heath and blanket bog (Ireland has 8% of the world’s blanket bog), and rare species such as the Kerry spotted slug and the Killarney fern.

Despite the steep mountainous terrain and ever-changing weather conditions, the Reeks are actively farmed. In more recent times, sheep farming has come to dominate the area; but in the past summer cattle grazing would have been a common sight across the landscape with people (often young women) moving up to the higher ground with the cattle for the summer. Here, they milked the cattle, made cheese and stayed in small stone shelters.

The MacGillycuddy’s Reeks are Ireland’s highest mountains and include the only three peaks in Ireland over 1,000 metres, Carrauntoohill at a lofty 1,039 metres, Binn Chaorach at 1,010 metres, and Caher standing at 1,001 metres.

It is a hiker’s and climber’s paradise. Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s highest peak and, as such, it attracts thousands of people from all over the world each year who wish to climb to its summit.

It is a magnificent, rugged and scenic mountain and climbing it is an experience that one doesn’t forget. Corrán Tuathail, its Irish name, means ‘Tuathal’s sickle’ and it towers above the many other peaks in the majestic MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. On a fine day, views extend to the faraway mountains, lakes and farmlands of West Cork, and north and south Kerry.

During the last two Ice Ages approx. 300,000 – 130,000 and 80,000 to 10,000 years ago, the highest peaks of The Reeks projected above the ice and hence were subject to severe ice weathering.

This, along with erosion over time, has resulted in the jagged appearance we see today. To experience these mountains, it is highly recommended that you reap the benefits of exploring them with a guide, particularly if you wish to get to the summit of Ireland’s highest mountain and lack the relevant experience.

The distance to climb to the summit and back is 12km, and it will take the average walker six to seven hours to complete.

Pat Falvey of World Wide Adventures offers daily scheduled climbs for individuals, groups, and families as well as team and company challenges.

He was an active member of Kerry Mountain Rescue for 10 years where he learnt his mountain skills. Pat has lived locally at the base of Ireland’s highest mountains from where he runs his guiding services, since 1991.

Wild

KILLARNEY at it best

Killarney National Park is a designated biosphere nature reserve and home to many rare species of animals, birds and fish.

Red deer

RED DEER

Killarney’s herd of red deer are as famous as the National Park that they graze in.

The red deer is Ireland’s largest land mammal and the stags can achieve a weight of 220kg. The female, or hind, can reach up to 110kg in weight.

While red deer can be found in several parts of Ireland, the Killarney herd is indigenous to the area.

They have a deep reddish brown coat that turns brown-grey in colour in winter as it thickens for protection against the weather. Red deer are primarily grazing animals but also included in their diet is heather, small shrubs and rough grasses.

The stags shed and regrow their antlers every year, ensuring they are in tip top condition for the rut.

WHITE TAILED EAGLE

National Parks and Wildlife Service began a second phase White Tailed Eagle reintroduction project to bolster the existing eagle population in Ireland. The original reintroduction programme (2007-2011) involved releasing one hundred young White Tailed Eagles in Killarney National Park.

Before this eagles hadn’t been seen in Ireland since the early 20th century, but now there are White Tailed Sea Eagles in the sky once more.

One of Ireland’s largest resident birds, the eagle has a wingspan of up to 2.4 metres and a body length of approximately one metre. The female is the larger of the two and can weigh around 6kg whereas her male counterpart weighs around 4kg.

Many sightings of the eagle within the National Park have been over Lough Leane.

KILLARNEY SHAD

There are 14 different species of fish in the waters of Killarney National Park, one of which is particularly rare and found nowhere else in the world.

Killarney shad – known locally as “the goureen” - is not only unique to Ireland, it is unique to Kerry and specifically to Lough Leane within the Killarney National Park. This is a particularly interesting fish as it is believed to have arrived in the lake at the time of the last glacial period around 10,000 years ago, and as the ice sheets melted it had to adapt to become a landlocked species.

WILDFLOWERS

Species found in Killarney National Park include: bluebell, common honeysuckle, bitter vetch, lesser celandine, ragwort, slender rush, thistle, mouse-ear chickweed, knapweed, hawkweed, wood sorrel, enchanter’s nightshade, bog asphodel, common butter-

wort and round-leaved sundew. The Kerry Lily is a rare and protected species found in the National Park.

TREES

The National Park is home to many different tree families but one could be unique to Killarney.

The Arbutus tree may be native to Spain and France but, for some reason, it is abundant in the Killarney area too.

Often referred to as the Killarney Arbutus (many local businesses carry the Arbutus tagline), it is also known as the Killarney Strawberry Tree.

The Killarney Arbutus is different from its Mediterranean cousins. In the warmer climates it grows to no bigger than a shrub, but it thrives in the damper Killarney climate and trees can grow to 12 metres.

Timber craftsmen created amazing decorative furniture from the Arbutus wood and local enthusiasts keep the tradition alive by restoring old tables and chairs.

“Ireland’s got this absolute jewel of a National Park”

Now aged 96, he is renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of nature which has inspired several top-rated television documentaries.

One episode of his most recent documentary ‘Wild Isles’ zoomed in on local nature, wildlife and the magnificent scenery that can be enjoyed in the 26,000-acre Killarney National Park, which featured extensively and in remarkable detail, as well as the west coast for the new series that has attracted millions of views.

The programme showing Killarney was televised on BBC One – to an estimated seven million people in March 2023. It is also available on BBC iPlayer.

Several walking trails winding through lakes, glens, waterfalls and forests, against a striking mountain backdrop, were featured.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Senior Executive, Bridget O’Keeffe, said it is a wonderful compliment to the Park that such a legendary conservationist and broadcaster chose Killarney for his latest series.

“This is hugely significant, and it will be a major advantage in showcasing the charms and the beauty of the National Park to such a wide audience around the world, both on the BBC and online,” she said.

The camera crews captured superb footage of stags battling ferociously during the deer rutting season in the Park.

“Ireland’s got this absolute jewel of a National Park and I’m sure that many people recognise that. What a national heritage. What a fantastic thing to be able to be proud of,” said producer and director Nicholas Gates.

Filmed over three years and using the very latest technology, the five-part series explores and celebrates the beautiful wildlife found in Britain and Ireland with different habitats featured, including woodlands, grasslands, freshwater and marine.

The Killarney segment, only four or five minutes in length, captured the spectacle and violence of the Park’s world-famous deer rut – a tourism event in itself these days.

“Red deer have a might about them but if

you’re not familiar with them as a creature, then you don’t know that might, you don’t know the power,” said director Nick Gates. “Even when they’re fighting you don’t feel the weight. The moment they hit the water, you feel the weight because it explodes. There’s nothing fluffy, nothing little, about those two great beasts going at it.”

Search ‘Wild Isles’ on the BBC iPlayer and scroll to Episode 3 ‘Grasslands’ to see just how impressed David Attenborough was with what he witnessed in Killarney National Park.

David Attenborough, one of the world’s most-known nature broadcasters, needs no introduction to anyone interested in the animal kingdom.
