CREATE. LEARN. CONNECT. KAC is an open and supportive community of makers. Think about the last time you made something — anything. What happened inside of you? It’s likely you felt excited and a little vulnerable, hoping that someone would see beyond imperfections to appreciate the authenticity of your creation. It’s also likely that someone — perhaps a member of your family — saw what you made and affirmed your efforts through a smile, a hug, or an exclamation such as “I love it!.” Store-bought creations only bring a fraction of the lifetime joy a handmade creation can bring. Evidence of this is the quilt your grandmother made, or the ceramic mug your child made twenty years ago that is still in your cupboard. At KAC, we invite you to find this connection, this joy. You might try a class you’ve never done before through one of our introductory workshops, or return to an artform you loved as a teenager. Regardless of the class or workshop you choose, you will always find that KAC is an open and supportive community of makers. The purpose of KAC is to facilitate art experiences that inspire students to become not only better artists, but better people too. How can we help each other grow, unwind, laugh, and take risks? The power of art is alive at KAC.

LARRY CALKINS INTERVIEW
Larry Calkins is a painter and collage artist who works with simple materials and objects that present some kind of history: rusted metal, found cloth, or scraps of wood. His typical paint medium is beeswax that he mixes with pigments. Occasionally he carves his brushes from twigs and often, if an object he wants is not readily available, he will create it.
WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? Ideas and waiting projects (and my little dog archie :-)) I’m most excited about collage and calligraphy.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT - BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS. I’d like to create a very large abstract calligraphy project.
WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR WORK? In Seattle, you can see my work at Gallery IMA, I’m also very active on my Instagram @larryvcalkins.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS OF ANY AGE AND WITH ANY LEVEL OF EXPERTISE? Draw. Work every day and study art history.
Learn more about Larry and see all of his work by visiting http://www.calkinsart.com/.

KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
LA MANIÈRE NOIRE KAC GALLERY
GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Friday 11 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM Closed Sundays and Mondays
OCTOBER 3 – NOVEMBER 25 OPENING RECEPTION 6PM ON OCTOBER 6
The title of our international mezzotint exhibition is “La Manière Noire”. Translated as “The Black Way”, this description has been used for four centuries to refer to a process that originated in 1650 as a way to add tonal range to the etchings of the time. Mezzotint matured into a full fledged printmaking method over the next 50 years. Four hundred years later this technique, involving only hand tools, is gaining in popularity again. This international exhibition includes 30+ mezzotint artists from many different countries. The prints were selected from three separate print exchanges participated in by E. Valentine DeWald II in 2016 and 2017. The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions.
