Reminiscing about the old Kai Tak Airport always stirs emotions. Not only because the site has changed dramatically, but also it recalls the farewell scene in the airport a few decades ago when the last wave of emigration happened. Kai Tak was a world-class urban wonder. The old residents are excited whenever they talk about it. Living next to the airport located in the city's heart was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience worth boasting about. The pain of parting, the terrible turbulent flight, the hustle and bustle of Kowloon City, the cadet pilots of Far East Flying School…these were the memories of the old airport that many can relate to. When we listened to the sharing from people who lived during the golden time of Kai Tak Airport, we missed it before it came into our lives. The Walking Trail sits adjacent to this old airport, before the new look is revealed, let’s take the chance to hear its stories in the past.

憶 回 城 寨 it y C d e ll a W f o s e c R e m in is c e n

Kowloon Walled City is no stranger to many Hongkongers. Its existence was an anomaly handed down by history. Despites its notorious past, it also provided shelters to the grassroots. Even after its demolition in 1993, it continued to appear in worldwide film and television productions, including the Japanese animation “Ghost in the Shell” and local drama “A Fist Within Four Walls”. Do you know how the fictional depiction of Walled City is different from the reality? Is it really the “City of Dark”? In the next issue, we will talk more about this legendary enclave.

The main theme of Route 4 is “Waterfront Leisure Walk”. To echo the concept of waterfront, the public facilities are mainly in light blue hue, featuring visual elements such as sailing ships and sea waves. Adjacent to the former Kowloon City Vehicular Ferry Pier and Hoi Sum Park, King Wan Street, installed with planters and benches, is a popular waterfront area for strolling. The railings and elderly-friendly benches have been renewed. The arbours are decorated with patterns of Fishtail Rock, ship and Hoi Sum Pavilion. The designs of the solar power light boxes on the railings are derived from previous participatory workshops. They sparkle up the street at night and set the mood.

T e m ple a nd C hurch W alk

The main theme of Route 5 is “Temple and Church Walk”. Route 5 is where the religious buildings of East and West meet. Inspired by the temples and churches, the public facilities feature a redand-green hue, complemented by elements of incense coils and stain glasses. After a number of on-site inspections, our team found out there was a lack of public open space in the route, so we decided to add more elderly-friendly facilities, which includes renovation of the benches in front of Hung Hom Pak Tai Temple and installation of new illustration map panel on the streets.

AR

We also release new AR games that can interact with the hardwares in Route 4 and 5. Try them to learn the interesting stories such as the coastline, gasometer, Tai Wan Shan and Lux Theatre! Download our app, tap “Menu”, “AR Experience” and enjoy!

December 2021, we jointly held

the event “Ride on Wave: Kowloon City” with Think of a Style in Stone Houses Family Garden. It comprised an award ceremony, an exhibition and a creative market. Under the theme of “transformation and conversion of traditional craftsmanship”, ten artisanal units gathered to promote Kowloon City’s culture and the power of local creative brands. The award ceremony and exhibition were derived from two territory-

wide design competitions for primary and secondary school students, which had received approximately 200 entries since last April. Some of the winning works will be showcased on the Walking Trail in the near future. In 2022, our team will keep exploring and bring more splendid programs to the public. Stay tuned!

Airplanes flying closely over the rooftop was a unique scene that only happened in Kowloon City when they landed. The upcoming workshop will remind participants of the prosperous moment of Kai Tak Airport and allow them to make their own luggage tag. We believe we can overcome the pandemic and travel again!

Mosaic Treasure Box Workshop

St. Teresa’s Church is a neo-Romanesque building completed in 1932. It was designed with spire and round arches which is distinctive to surrounding buildings in Kowloon City. The windows are glazed in simple geometric patterns of yellow, white and green, imbuing a humble purity that goes well with the spiritual simplicity of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus. This workshop allows you to explore the religious places in Kowloon City and create your unique shimmering treasure box. *Class A is family workshop.
