Diebenkorn first became captivated by Matisse’s work as a Stanford University student. Over the course of four decades, he was deeply influenced by the great French painter while forging a style entirely his own. See their art side by side for the first time, and experience a surprising new view of two of the 20th century’s most extraordinary painters. KQED members can see the exhibition free on Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18 — just show your KQED MemberCard and valid ID at the museum and receive free, timed tickets for that day (maximum two per member). Subject to availability. sfmoma.org Richard Diebenkorn, Ocean Park #79,1975; Philadelphia Museum of Art, purchased with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and with funds contributed by private donors; © the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation.

This year’s opening night film, The Tiger Hunter, starring Community’s Danny Pudi, is an oddball comedy about the immigrant experience and a young Indian man’s quest for the American dream. CAAMFest takes place at venues throughout San Francisco and Oakland, March 9–19. Check out the lineup, watch trailers and buy tickets online. caamedia.org

Glide over Yosemite Valley, journey into the canopy of a giant sequoia, and see how critters of all sizes survive through drought, wildfires and heavy snows. Every corner of the iconic wilderness holds secrets great and small, from forests of giants to the tiniest of creatures — all of them bound together by a single source of life. It’s the power of water that is the heart and soul of this magical place. Yosemite airs Wednesday, March 29, at 8pm on KQED 9.

KQED Public Television

So inspired by Yosemite’s grandeur, John Muir wrote, “No temple made with hands can compare with Yosemite. Every rock in its walls seems to glow with life.” More than a century later, Yosemite still attracts naturalists, photographers and adventurers seeking to connect with this ancient land. Yosemite, a new film from Nature, is a journey through America’s most famous national park as seen through the lens of water. Water made life in this stone wilderness possible, carved out the iconic valley and gave birth to Earth’s largest living trees. But the climate is changing, and Yosemite is feeling the heat. Follow scientists and adventurers as they explore the past, present and future of the Sierra’s most precious resource.

First 100 Days: Art in the Age of Trump A new multimedia series from KQED Arts.

Favorite Eats Around the Bay

Long before Donald J. Trump won the 2016 presidential election, the Bay Area’s creative community had begun reacting to the nominee’s personality and policies. With the reality of a Trump administration upon us, artist-activists are responding all over the region. KQED Arts’ series First 100 Days: Art in the Age of Trump serves to highlight the work of artists and other creatives during the first 100 days of Trump’s administration — 100 days being the time frame when a president’s power and influence are supposedly at their zenith. With artists uniting around issues such as immigration, the environment, women’s rights and health care, KQED Arts invites you to witness what is happening to our world and our democracy through the eyes of Bay Area artists. From now through April 29, the KQED Arts team will create audio, video, photos and written pieces to showcase the creative work emerging from our communities. If you’ve written a song or concerto about the latest immigration policy, made a short film about changes to the Environmental Protection Act, or created a poem, play, dance piece or visual art work about women’s rights at the dawn of a new era — or if you know of any such projects going on — we want to hear from you.

Overwhelmed by the Bay Area’s food options? KQED Food’s writers and contributors fill you in on their favorite restaurants with our Guides series. Recent guides include:

Taxwise Giving It’s tax season, and although it is too late to change last year’s tax situation, planning ahead may help you reduce your tax liability for 2017. If you are age 60 or older, consider the benefits of a charitable gift annuity. Tax benefits can include • partially tax-free income • income tax deduction • reduced capital gains taxes (if appreciated securities are used to fund the gift annuity)

6

For example: Bert (age 70) has a $20,000 certificate of deposit paying 2 percent that is about to mature. If he uses the $20,000 to establish a charitable gift annuity with KQED, he will receive: • tax-free income — nearly 75 percent of Bert’s $1,020 annual income is tax free • an immediate income tax deduction of approximately $8,000 • a 5.1 percent annuity rate for his lifetime, based on his age Please contact KQED’s Gift Planning Department at 415.553.2230 or legacy@kqed.org for more information about gift annuities.

(right) and Judy Campbell, The Leap received high praise and rave reviews from listeners as well as industry critics, including Wired magazine and The Guardian. Brand-new episodes of The Leap delve into strange chapters of this country’s history: long-forgotten LSD experiments in a Southern California hospital for abandoned children and a Northern California child-worshiping cult that met tragedy in rural India. Other episodes tell more recent stories, including those of three immigrants — a refugee, a student who walked over the border alone at 16

and a DREAMer — the leaps that brought them here and how their lives have changed since the election. Says Amy, “It’s exciting to see that leaps are universal, nonpartisan and central to the American Dream. The Leap is a great lens for talking about where we’re at, now.” Visit kqed.org/theleap to listen and subscribe. If you have story ideas, please email theleap@kqed.org. Two one-hour The Leap specials air on KQED 88.5 FM in March. See below for details.

KQED’s most popular original podcast began its second season on February 28. First released in the fall of 2015 after winning an internal KQED “co-opetition,” The Leap tells compelling stories of people making dramatic and risky transformations. The first season delighted listeners with stories of leaps like an iconic punk rock guitarist turned computer programmer and how the world’s worst smell evolved from a high school gag to save lives in the military. Hosted by award-winning public radio reporter-producers Amy Standen

London public relations whiz Agatha Raisin seemingly has it all — more money than she needes, an executive riverside flat and a career in PR to die for — but her professional achievements have come at an emotional cost. Dreaming of a more peaceful existence away from it all, she opts for early retirement in the Cotswolds, only to find herself immersed in a variety of mysteries. The pilot episode of Agatha Raisin airs Thursday, March 23, at 8pm on KQED 9. The first season begins Thursday, March 30, at 8pm on KQED 9.
