Both appointments are effective May 5. “KQED is in a period of dramatic change and growth as we transform the organization to meet the rapidly changing needs of the people of the Bay Area, both in terms of new media technology and increased regional coverage,” said John Boland. “I believe we’ve established the right structure with two senior executives leading the implementation of our 21st-century strategy, and I have great confidence that we’ve selected the right leaders in Kevin Martin and Michael Isip.”

On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the D-Day invasion on the heavily defended Normandy beaches to liberate Europe from the Nazis. In less than 24 hours, more than 5,000 ships — the largest armada in history — crossed the English Channel, along with thousands of tanks and landing craft and 200,000 men. Throughout the operation, hundreds of ships sank while running the gauntlet of mines and bunkers, creating one of the world’s largest underwater archaeological sites. Now, 70 years later, NOVA has exclusive access to a unique international collaboration between military historians, archaeologists and specialist divers as they carry out the most extensive survey ever done of the seabed bordering the legendary Normandy beachheads. In the two-hour special D-Day’s Sunken Secrets, the teams use submersibles, underwater robots and the latest 3-D mapping tools to discover, identify and plot the relics on the sea floor. In addition to uncovering this underwater battlefield, the program highlights the story of an often neglected group of heroes essential to the success of the D-Day invasion and to winning the war: the engineers.
KQED has made two new senior-level appointments: Kevin Martin has been named senior vice president and chief operating officer and Michael Isip, senior vice president and chief content officer. Kevin Martin has more than two decades of experience as an executive in the national public media system and was most recently vice president, station grants and system development, at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington, DC. Michael Isip, who has been promoted from vice president, television, brings 18 years of content experience to his new role, including eight years as a senior manager at KQED. Martin

The next generation of filmmakers isn’t afraid to tell compelling stories and start challenging conversations. This month, look for the evocative Slamdance hit I Am John Wayne, the dastardly and eerily humorous Penny Dreadful, the stunning period war film Road to Peshawar, the unflinching Singaporean prison drama A Better Place Than This, and First Match, the powerful story of a teen female wrestler on an all-boy team. “I hope everyone can relate to it,” says director Olivia Newman, “particularly girls trying to break certain boundaries and try things not normally associated with girls, and that maybe they take some courage from the character.”

In a new three-part series, best-selling author and U.S. army veteran Wes Moore tells the story of his search for answers to some of the most difficult questions facing veterans returning from war. Moore’s journey, spurred by the suicide of one of his oldest friends and a fellow officer, takes him into the personal lives of ten soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and, for many, find a new mission. “We want to better humanize reintegration by taking the audience into the lives of these men and women as they

the first feature-length film created entirely on computers. It changed animation forever. Pixar has since gone on to win 27 Academy Awards for animated filmmaking. When the Walt Disney Company bought Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion, Catmull became the president and CEO of the combined Walt Disney Animation Studios. Thus, through his chosen route of physics, mathematics and computing, Ed Catmull realized his dream to be a Disney animator. The environment that Catmull and his colleagues built at Pixar, and continue at Disney, is based on philosophies that honor the creative process, strike a delicate balance between artistic story-telling and skilled engineering, and defy convention. In his new book, Creativity, Inc., Catmull reveals some of the secrets of Pixar’s success and describes his own approach to inspiring excellence in a very large organization over the long term.

As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to be an animator and an artist. When he learned that he lacked the natural talent for hand-drawn animation, he turned to his other passion: physics, and then computing. He nurtured that dream as a Ph.D. student
