KQED Perks MoAD’s MLK Day of Service San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) will celebrate the national observance of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a Day of Service, providing free admission to the museum and programs throughout the day on Monday, January 15. ITVS and KQED have teamed up to screen the documentary Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities, which explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years in American history, culture and identity. Stanley Nelson’s film reveals the rich history of HBCUs and the power of higher education to transform lives and advance civil rights and equality in the face of injustice. moadsf.org

KQED Public Television
More than 16.2 million viewers tuned in for Victoria’s season 1 premiere, making it the highest-rated drama on PBS in 20 years — second only to Downton Abbey. Critics praised Victoria’s “lavish production” and called it “thoroughly enjoyable and addictive.” The highly anticipated second season of Victoria kicks off with a two-hour double episode on Sunday, January 14, at 9pm on KQED 9. For those of you who need to catch up before season 2, KQED 9 will air Victoria season 1 on Sundays in advance of season 2, and every episode is available on KQED Passport, an on-demand streaming service that gives members exclusive access to PBS and local shows (see page 23 for more information). Look for Victoria recaps on kqed.org/pop. All seven episodes of Victoria season 2 will be available on KQED Passport starting January 14. Local broadcast of Victoria is made possible by Stanford Health Care and the Oakland International Airport.

The queen is back. Season 2 of Victoria finds the young ruler in the throes of motherhood and struggling to have it all — romance, power, an heir and personal freedom. As Victoria’s family grows, England’s discontent is also growing. While the disaster of the Anglo-Afghan War unfolds abroad and the catastrophic Irish potato famine begins to wreak havoc, Victoria is faced with her biggest challenges yet and finds herself at odds with England’s reforming prime minister, Sir Robert Peel. Meanwhile, Prince Albert is distracted by the budding Industrial Revolution, and his curiosity draws him to famous projects of the time, including Charles Babbage’s mechanical calculator, William Fothergill Cooke’s electrical telegraph system and Marc Isambard Brunel’s Thames Tunnel. Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) returns in the title role, and Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) reprises his part as the queen’s dashing consort, Prince Albert. Legendary actress Dame Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones) joins the cast of season 2 as Duchess of Buccleuch, the court’s new Mistress of the Robe, and Emerald Fennell (Call the Midwife) plays famed lady mathematician Ada Lovelace, who cultivates a friendship with Albert that sparks Victoria’s jealousy.

Science New Science News Editor Seeks Out Oddities in Everyday Life
Meet Danielle Venton, the new science news editor for KQED Science. She has worked at KQED since 2015, helping bring stories about fires, face mites and total solar eclipses to listeners and readers. Her work has appeared in WIRED, Nature and Popular Mechanics and on the airwaves of NPR. Danielle loves hiking, reading and writing with fountain pens. What drew you to science reporting? I try to understand the world in the most complete way possible. As a child I was incredibly inquisitive. I’m afraid I drove my mother nuts. When I was 7, she gave me an almanac. “I can’t answer every question,” she wrote on the flyleaf. “Maybe this can help.” In high school, I gravitated toward science — a pretty natural draw for a kid who wanted to know as much as she could. It was in college that I realized I wasn’t meant to be a scientist. I was much more interested in writing about research than in doing lab work. As a junior at Humboldt State, I convinced the editors at the student newspaper to let me have a weekly column. I called it “Science 4
to Snack On” and filled it with essays on how lichens work, monkeys that use millipedes as mosquito repellent and how you can see blips of cosmic microwave background in the static of an old-style TV. After a couple months, I knew I’d found what I wanted to do. When did you start working at KQED? Was it as a science reporter? I started freelancing for the news department in 2013 or 2014 while I was working as a part-time reporter at KRCB, the NPR member station in Sonoma County. A few years after that, I was asked if I’d consider training as an anchor and a host. I actually said no at first because I was shy and didn’t think I’d be good at it. Fortunately, I got over that and had a wonderful time filling in as a news anchor and an occasional host for The California Report. When asked if I’d like to fill in as an editor for KQED Science, I leaped at the chance. This summer, I became a permanent member of the staff, working as a science editor full time.

What’s the strangest science story you’ve ever covered? I’m sorry to say it wasn’t for KQED! When I was studying science communication in graduate school, I had my heart set on interning at WIRED. To prepare a story pitch to go with my application, I scoured freshly published scientific journal articles for hours, looking for truly intriguing research. Finally, I found it. In Florida, a biologist was working to communicate with wild dolphins (a far more difficult task than working with captive dolphins). She and a researcher from the SETI Institute in Mountain View wrote a paper arguing two-way communication with wild dolphins could be practice for one day communicating with intelligent extraterrestrials. I got the WIRED internship and wrote the story with the title “To Talk With Aliens, Learn to Speak With Dolphins.” KQED Science is supported by the S. D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation, the Dirk and Charlene Kabcenell Foundation, the Vadasz Family Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the members of KQED.

“Our aim is to get our guests to open up and speak candidly about what shaped them, what they really care about, what motivates them, and how they really feel about the news and policies that affect our daily lives,” says Shafer. In addition to covering local and state topics, Political Breakdown will look at national news and policies, but from California’s unique vantage point. “Our state’s size and self-reliance, combined with more left-leaning attitudes toward political, social and environmental issues, really gives these conversations a different spin than they might have elsewhere,” adds Lagos. “Depending on where you are in the country, our state is viewed as either a beacon or a nuisance.”

KQED Public Television
Political Breakdown is a new weekly radio program and podcast that unpacks politics with a California perspective. Hosts Scott Shafer, senior editor of the California politics and government desk, and state politics reporter Marisa Lagos examine the political intersection of California and the nation, from the inside out. Joined each week by reporters and other insiders involved in the craft of politics — including elected officials, candidates, pollsters, campaign managers, fundraisers and other political players — Political Breakdown pulls back the curtain to offer a glimpse at how politics is made today. In a format that is loose, unscripted and at times playful, Shafer and Lagos will go beyond the policy talking points, glossy ads and images.

American Experience: Into the Amazon premieres Tuesday, January 9, at 9pm on KQED 9.
On Q January 2018
Into the Amazon tells the remarkable story of the 1914 journey taken by President Theodore Roosevelt and Brazilian explorer Candido Mariano Da Silva Rondon into the heart of the South American rainforest to chart an unexplored tributary of the Amazon River. What was anticipated to be a relatively tranquil journey turned out to be a brutal test of courage and character. More than a dramatic story of adventure and survival, Into the Amazon shines a light on two of the western hemisphere’s most formidable men and the culture and politics of their nations.
13
They are the most enigmatic, mysterious and exotic objects in the universe: black holes. They’re also the most powerful; their gravity is so strong that nothing — not even light — can escape their pull. Anything that falls into them vanishes … gone forever. But now, astrophysicists are coming to realize that black holes just might be an essential key to the structure of the universe and to our very existence. NOVA journeys to the frontiers of black hole science in a new, one-night, two-hour special, Black Hole Apocalypse. NOVA Black Hole Apocalypse premieres Wednesday, January 10, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Award-winning filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain’s new documentary examines Lorraine Hansberry’s life and work using a remarkable collection of archival footage, home movies, rare photos and unpublished documents. Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun (1959) changed the face of American theater by depicting the limitations of the American dream through the lives of a black family on Chicago’s South Side. American Masters: Lorraine Hansberry airs Friday, January 19, at 9pm on KQED 9.
