KQED Perks A Special Message for San Francisco Magazine Subscribers As a recipient of San Francisco magazine, you’ve come to enjoy having the KQED program schedule conveniently included in the publication. However, as of June 2011, KQED’s contract with Cumulus Media expired. Since we have been providing this popular benefit to our members for many years, we were able to reach an agreement that provides the magazine through the December 2011 issue, but without the KQED program schedule included. We want you to know when your favorite programs air, so we will be sending you On Q for two more months after this inaugural issue. We are excited to be able to provide this expanded publication and hope you find it indispensable. Next month, you will receive a notification in your copy of On Q asking you to tell us how you’d like to receive your program schedule— in print or online. Please respond quickly so that we can update your membership account to reflect your preference.

If you previously received Guide or Preview member magazines, you’ll see that On Q combines the television listings from both so you now have access to KQED 9 and KQED Plus daily schedules all in one place. (Weekday daytime schedules for both channels are on page 25). Also, you now have more complete KQED World and KQED Life schedules at your fingertips. They are on pages 26 and 27, along with the KQED Kids schedule. Detailed descriptions of KQED Public Radio specials are on page 9, so you no longer have to go online for that information. (We’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you that it’s always smart to check KQED.org if you’re marking your calendar for a particular special, in case any schedule changes have happened since On Q went to press.) And last but not least, we’re excited to be able to bring you even more news and information about KQED’s programs, initiatives, and community events around the Bay Area each month, as well as special features you’ll find only in On Q.

Welcome to the premier issue of On Q, our new monthly publication for people who support KQED financially. In it, you will find more of what you love about KQED—more stories, more listings for television and radio, more information about our new media and educational services, and more details about the many perks you receive as part of your membership. KQED has so much to offer. Whether it is the best of PBS and NPR or local programs we create here in the Bay Area, like The California Report and Check, Please! Bay Area, (which starts a new season on July 7), we pride ourselves on a rich variety of programming and services for you to explore. Our website, KQED.org, allows you to watch programs you’ve missed, listen to our live audio stream and podcasts, and learn more about the local food and arts scene with original content like “Bay Area Bites” and “Gallery Crawl,” to cite just a few examples. As of July 1, we are introducing a new name for one of our television channels: KQED Plus. For more than a year, we’ve been investigating the positive and negative impacts of renaming the station formerly known as KTEH to KQED Plus. We interviewed constituents, including former board members and donors of KTEH, did surveys with the KTEH audience, as well as with our Board of Directors, our Community Advisory Panel, and our staff; and we consulted with branding firms who are familiar with nonprofit organizations and with brand identity. The findings, in every segment, were consistent with what we had been hearing from our members for several years. There was brand confusion among our audiences, many not realizing that KTEH, licensed in San Jose, is a television service provided throughout the Bay Area by KQED. And it was not clear that KQED is serving the San Jose area not with KTEH alone but with all our services—KQED 9, KQED Plus, KQED Public Radio, KQED.org, KQED Education. It was confusing to have KTEH with a different name when in fact all these services are coming from one organization: KQED. Our goal with KQED Plus is to offer television viewers more options for great Online at kqed.org/OnQ Although we’re using a new format to present programming, so at any given time the magazine online (which we think is pretty KQED Plus and KQED 9 will have cool), a downloadable PDF is still available. different types of programming. What type of reaction and results has California Watch’s reporting generated? One of California Watch’s most ambitious investigations earlier this year revealed

What does KQED’s partnership with California Watch mean for listeners and viewers? KQED’s partnership with California Watch is unique. It allows KQED to expand its news-gathering capacity to include the work of a talented and motivated team of investigative reporters. It also helps California Watch stories reach a large, statewide audience. To make the collaboration work smoothly, a producer-reporter divides his time between the two newsrooms, keeping track of stories and investigations as they develop.

Read more of this interview online at kqed.org/onq-exclusives.

What are some of the most memorable stories California Watch has covered? California Watch reporters have exposed systemic problems in hospitals and nursing homes, scams in the state’s medical marijuana program, rip-offs by city employees, possible fraud in state agencies, and a range of questionable decisions that have impacted the safety of children in public schools. Perhaps one of the most moving and troubling stories was an investigation into rising maternal mortality rates across the state.

systemic problems in the state agency responsible for ensuring that public schools meet the highest earthquake safety standards. The investigation found some 20,000 school projects have not been certified by state regulators and could be vulnerable in a strong quake. What’s more, we found that millions of dollars approved by voters to retrofit at-risk schools has never been spent due to stringent criteria established by the state. Our series On Shaky Ground (kqed.org/onshakyground/) prompted the state legislature to look into these problems and spurred one agency to make changes that could get more money to older schools to pay for retrofit projects. Legislators are also pressing the state to audit the agency that oversees seismic safety laws in public schools.

Print, radio, and television reporters for California Watch and KQED News gather outside Southeast High School in South Gate while working on a project in December 2010.

Tell me a little about California Watch and its history. California Watch was launched in 2009 by the Berkeley-based Center for Investigative Reporting, the country’s oldest nonprofit investigative news organization. It’s a growing team of reporters and editors that pursues in-depth, high-impact reporting on issues such as education, public safety, health care, and the environment. The key to California Watch’s success in getting stories to a large audience is through partnerships with newspapers, television and public radio stations like KQED. The group’s editorial collaboration with KQED was the first of its kind in the nation.

KQED Public Radio

These days it’s not easy to find an investigative reporter at a major news organization. In recent years, traditional media companies have cut back on in-depth investigations in favor of producing bite-sized headlines and 140-character news blurbs. But that certainly doesn’t mean the need for investigative reporters has disappeared; they can provide a vital service, combing through avalanches of information and pulling out stories that impact a community. The team at California Watch is among the best at performing that important duty. The organization has partnered with KQED for several insightful reports in recent months and continues to shed light on issues that are at times overlooked by other media outlets. Michael Montgomery, a producer-reporter for KQED News and California Watch, recently answered some questions about the organization and its work.

Television KQED’s Spark, PBS’s Art:21, and Craft in America. I’m a self-proclaimed contemporary art nerd!

Podcasts Gallery Crawl is No. 1, but I’m biased as the associate producer. Writers’ Block is not your average literary promotional tool. The producers select great excerpts that work as stand-alone stories told by the writers themselves, including some of my favorites: David Sedaris, Miranda July, and Jennifer Egan.

Radio This American Life because the storytelling is terrific and Ira Glass keeps me engaged; Marketplace because it’s the only program that makes financial news fun to listen to and they choose some great, obscure music; Forum with Michael Krasny because the guests are tops; Radio Lab because it tells the story of science through music and unbelievable facts; and Car Talk because I grew up listening to Click and Clack and they still make me laugh.

KQED.org The Arts and Culture blog (kqed.org/arts) is the only place to find thoughtful, in-depth articles on all aspects of the Bay Area visual and performing arts scene. Again, I’m biased, as I’ve written for the blog for the last five years. But, honestly, I’d read it daily even if I weren’t a contributor. My favorite features are the artist studio visits I produce with my colleague, Emmanuel Hapsis, and the feature called Mix Tape (kqed.org/mixtape) where different bloggers create thematic, streamable playlists of great new music.

Who better to guide you to your new favorite public media programs and Web content than a KQED staff member?

The Carole and Robert McNeil Volunteer of the Year Awards were presented this spring at KQED. Family, friends, and staff gathered to celebrate two extraordinary people who represent the more than 400 volunteers who give thousands of hours of their time to KQED each year. Thanks to the McNeils’ leadership, for more than ten years KQED has recognized some of our most extraordinary volunteers with the McNeil Volunteer Awards. This year’s winners are Ken Blackmon and Brian Cheu. Ken Blackmon has been a KQED volunteer for only four years, but in that short time, Ken has become an indispensable member of our radio fundraising efforts. In the January drive, Ken super-

vised every single morning—that’s 16 days in a row starting at 6:30am! He’s also been known to help during television fundraising drives and other events. Brian Cheu has become an invaluable KQED volunteer. He currently serves as vice chair of the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) and is responsible for all of the CAP committees as well as planning the group’s annual retreat. He goes above and beyond the call of his responsibilities and actively participates in numerous CAP initiatives. KQED is extremely fortunate to have both Ken and Brian on our volunteer team. It is with deep gratitude that we honor the 2011 McNeil Award winners as representatives of all the volunteers who make up the KQED family.

America Abroad Roots of the Arab Spring Wednesday, July 13, 8pm and Saturday, July 16, 1pm Unemployment and anemic economies were fire-starters in the demonstrations that spread across the Arab world earlier this year. And although the Arab Spring may have toppled regimes, bread-and-butter issues continue to plague the region. Democracy alone won’t be enough to deal with a simple demographic Achilles’ heel—nearly a quarter of Arabs under 30 are jobless. This edition of America Abroad speaks to Arab youth searching for work in Yemen and travels to Morocco to hear from young people who’ve postponed marriage until they can save up their dirhams (Moroccan currency).

National Security and Free Speech Wednesday, July 6, 8pm This KQED public affairs special features Daniel Ellsberg, former Rand Corporation military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times and Washington Post in 1971, which helped drive public opinion against the Vietnam War; Frontline producer/correspondent and UC Berkeley journalism professor Lowell Bergman; and Robert H. Cole, UC Berkeley professor of law. The conversation is moderated by KQED’s Scott Shafer, host of The California Report. The program was recorded at the International House on the UC Berkeley campus on April 28, 2011.

Can We Stop Predicting the Future? Thursday, July 14, 8pm It’s impossible to predict the future, but humans can’t help themselves. From the economy to the presidency to the Super Bowl, educated and intelligent people promise insight, yet repeatedly fail by wide margins. These misses go unpunished, both publicly and in our brains, which have become trained to ignore the record of those who make predictions. This hour of Freakonomics Radio dreams of the day when the accuracy rate of pundits appears next to their faces on TV. Also, take a look at the deep roots of divining what tomorrow brings, from religion to new understandings of how we make these decisions. Finally, take a look at the kings of prediction—those who risk modeling the future and make millions.

The other is that of a dramatic victim of the recent economic recession, a city where entire neighborhoods have been foreclosed, where the jobless rate shot up to double digits, where massive casino and hotel construction was suspended, leaving hulking ghosts to remind residents of the boom times. Hear stories of people making Las Vegas home between these two sides of the city, those working to cultivate community in a place that has a reputation for being impersonal.

Together with marine biologist Dr. La Don Swann, Picou and host Majora Carter talk about human and environmental resilience in the wake of disaster.
