NEWS + NOTES

Building the Future KQED is renovating our San Francisco headquarters to better meet the changing needs of our Bay Area community. Designed by the award-winning architecture firm EHDD, our new home is the next essential step in our transformation into a 21st-century media leader. This project is supported by Campaign 21, which is separate from our annual fundraising efforts and your critical membership support. Construction begins in July 2019 with our staff moving to a temporary space. KQED’s broadcast and digital services will continue uninterrupted during the two-year process.

TOP: THE NEW NEWSROOM. BOTTOM: THE NEW KQED HEADQUARTERS WILL REOPEN IN EARLY 2021. (RENDERINGS COURTESY EHDD ARCHITECTS)

Over the past five years, KQED has transformed dramatically, and this renovation is the next step in that journey. Since 2010, we’ve made a significant investment in our newsroom, increasing our editorial staff from 45 to 91 with new local news desks, original podcasts, and weekend and breaking news coverage. The new building features a modern newsroom to host our growing news team. KQED has also made a commitment to building community. In 2018, we actively participated in more than 70 events. But at this time of deep social and political polarization, we must do more. In our redesigned headquarters, we will expand this public outreach with brand-new community spaces. The new design also provides earthquake retrofitting and much-needed upgrades to our technological infrastructure. The modern office and production spaces will provide our staff with the resources they need in order to continue delivering the high-quality, trustworthy journalism you rely on.

Reporting Women Airs Wednesday, March 13, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM Women make up roughly 50 percent of the world and are continually increasing their numbers in the fields of media and journalism. Yet how can we measure the quality of women’s representation in media? Reporting Women from the BBC kicks off KQED’s Women’s History Month and explores this question: Is the media reporting the issues that matter to women? And how can this coverage be improved? Host Lyse Doucet first hears from female students in India who are frustrated with the portrayal of women in the Indian media. Then, three of the BBC’s Women’s Affairs journalists join the program to debate the issue before a live audience. —Chloe Morizono

The Future of Your Commute Airs Thursday, March 7, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM With the rise of ride-sharing, electric scooters and bike rental companies, the Bay Area is abuzz with debate about technology’s impact on transportation and whether or not it is a problem or a solution. Tune in for a special broadcast from KQED’s Silicon Valley Conversations event series examining how Bay Area commutes have become some of the worst in the country and what we can do about it. Joined by Peter Calthorpe, urban planner at Calthorpe Associates; Dr. Melissa Cefkin, researcher at Nissan; and Sanjay Dastoor, the co-founder and CEO of Skip, KQED’s Silicon Valley Bureau Chief Tonya Mosley moderates the conversation to explore San Francisco’s unique transportation problems and ways we can innovate to solve them. —Chloe Morizono

PODCASTS

The best podcasts to listen to right now, recommended by Katrina Schwartz, co-host of MindShift, KQED’s podcast about the future of learning.

STARTER EPISODE

“Overcoming Childhood Trauma: How Parents and Schools Work to Stop the Cycle” MindShift brings you the voices of teachers, students and parents as they grapple with how to make school relevant and exciting to today’s kids.

STARTER EPISODE

Every episode of Rough Translation takes an issue we’re talking about here in the U.S. and looks at how it’s playing out somewhere else in the world. I like it because it shifts how I’m thinking about an issue, giving me new insight. I always learn something new when I listen to this podcast.

STARTER EPISODE

“Sean, Subway Seat”

Everything Is Alive is simply delightful. The host interviews inanimate objects about their daily existence and views on the world. Each episode is funny and poignant and often manages to touch on deeper life themes without taking itself too seriously.
