NEGOTIATING RELATIONSHIPS with IFS SELF-LEADERSHIP FOR HEALING Richard C. Schwartz and Sarah B. Stewart FOR everyone, including therapists, non-therapists, and seasoned IFS practitioners. CE credits.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a highly effective way of guiding people to a sense of Self—a state of inner clarity and compassion from which they can see their reactivity to others as based in their own history. By utilizing IFS, therapists and laypeople can hold this Self state, allowing you to work with your own experience and thus maintain a center from which to help others heal. Learn how to remain steady and openhearted in the face of your own and other’s reactivity in this program, which offers • An introduction to IFS

When we fight our demons, they can grow stronger. If we feed and nurture them, however, we can free ourselves from the battle. Inspired by ancient Buddhist practice, Feeding Your Demons® (FYD) is a five-step process that allows us to offer compassion and understanding to our inner demons rather than struggling with them. In this program, Lopön Chandra Easton and Karla Jackson-Brewer provide accessible, effective approaches for dealing with negative emotions, fear, and self-defeating patterns, as presented in Tsultrim Allione’s best-seller, Feeding Your Demons. Discover healing and integration as you explore • FYD partner and solo work • Creative exercises with drawing and clay • FYD Extended Ally Process • Prajnaparamita, a deep “nature of mind” meditation practice. When we learn to feed our demons, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greater freedom and inner peace. TUITION $490 + room & meals; p. 90

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy A SKILLS-BASED INTENSIVE

John P. Forsyth and Jamie R. Forsyth

Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises—individually, in dyads, and in small groups—you learn powerful strategies to help your clients • Gain freedom from suffering • Let go of unhelpful struggles • Cultivate peace of mind • Nurture self-compassion • Live a rich and meaningful life. Turning Toward Fear w AN EXCERPT FROM TARA BRACH’S RADICAL COMPASSION In a far-off land, word spread far and wide of a holy man with magic so powerful it could relieve the most severe suffering. After seekers of healing traveled through the wilderness to reach him, he’d swear them to secrecy about what was next to pass between them. Once they took the vow, the holy man asked a single question: “What are you unwilling to feel?” Learning to directly face anxiety and fear with the RAIN meditation (Recognize-Allow-Investigate-Nurture) gives you a pathway to inner transformation and a fearless heart. After a daylong seminar on RAIN and stress, Brianna came up to me and asked for some help. She’d recently been hired as a marketing vice-president in a large corporation, but she felt intimidated by the CEO, who was very quick to cut off anyone who was “wasting his time.” He ruled over the weekly staff meetings, which Brianna described as “torture” that put her into a state of “brain freeze.” I suggested that Brianna practice RAIN for a few minutes right before each meeting, and asked her what was going

on for her at that time. “On those mornings, I can really feel the anxiety building, and it lands me in a frenzy of busyness—reviewing reports, marking what I might need to comment on…nothing really productive,” she said. I smiled because I recognized that feeling all too well. “Okay, so before you start RAIN, imagine you’re pressing the pause button on that frenzy.” Brianna closed her eyes and pictured herself at her desk, half an hour before the weekly meeting. “As you pause,” I said, “your first job is to Recognize the anxiety and Allow it to be there.” She nodded. “Now, what do you notice if you bring your attention and interest to how it feels in your body?”

Asking yourself, “What am I unwilling to feel?” can open you to deep spiritual healing. Beginning to Investigate, she muttered, “Dry mouth...really tight chest...heart hammering...and, oh yeah, my stomach’s in knots.” I suggested she place her hand on her abdomen and send her breath there with a long, slow inflow and outflow. This would help her steady her attention and stay in contact with the fear. Then I guided her to ask the scared place inside her what it needed most, a key inquiry in Investigating. After a moment, she looked up, surprised. “It said, ‘Let it be okay that I’m here.’” The Nurturing that scared place needed was to be accepted, not to be made “wrong.” I asked Brianna how the wisest, kindest part of her wanted to respond. Could she find a way to acknowledge this very vulnerable part of herself with compassion? She sat quietly, still breathing slowly, her hand on her belly. Then she nodded. “I just sent the message, ‘It’s okay…this belongs.’ And it does feel more okay. I’m actually a bit more relaxed.” This became Brianna’s RAIN practice each week before going to the staff meeting. And when she felt anxiety

ith RAIN Fear is the feeling that something is wrong and we need to act to protect ourselves. spiking during the meeting, she’d simply breathe into it and send the message, “It’s okay.” A few months later, her tension around the CEO hadn’t disappeared, but her anxiety had lessened somewhat. More important, it didn’t feel like such a big deal: “I’m not so alarmed when I get anxious,” she told me. “I was fighting it so hard, but now it’s okay that it’s there. That really does free me up.” She also shared some real progress in making creative contributions and connecting with others. Asking yourself, “What am I unwilling to feel?” can open you to deep spiritual healing. Fear is the feeling that something is wrong and we need to act to protect ourselves. When, instead, we have the courage to pause and meet fear with mindfulness and compassion, our awareness and wisdom enlarges. If we need to respond to a threat, we’ll do so—with increased balance and presence. But often we’ll see: “It’s just anxiety, it’s okay”—and begin to unhook from a lifetime pattern of reactivity. While fears continue to arise, we have access to a heartspace that is open and free.

As the season shifts from winter to spring, we feel our energy rise. This program with Kathryn Costa offers you a place and a practice for your renewed energy to explore creating art intuitively. Through guided meditations, the use of oracle cards, and step-by-step instructions to get your mandala design started, you awaken your inner artist and return home feeling inspired, refreshed, and with works of art as unique as you. APRIL 24–26 FRIDAY–SUNDAY

Power Yoga Immersion FOR all levels. CE credits. Bryan Kest, a leading yoga teacher and longtime practitioner, returns to Kripalu to offer a full immersion in Power Yoga. Each of the four sessions during this program includes a practice that strengthens not just the body, but also the qualities of mind that have the greatest impact on well-being. Bryan leads you through a strong, well-rounded, yet accessible physical practice that leaves your body vibrating with vitality, while simultaneously challenging your mind. He teaches that, because asana practice is such a fertile environment for various mind states to arise, yoga offers a unique opportunity to strengthen the characteristics you want, including calm, patience, focus, gentleness, gratitude, humility, and acceptance; and weaken those that are harmful and stress-inducing, such as judgment, competitiveness, distraction, reaction, and criticism.

A strong physical practice needs to be grounded in a strong mental practice. Bryan Kest believes that true wellness and health are rooted in a calm, peaceful mind that is less dominated by habits, less reactive, and more in tune with the body, breath, and emotions. In his approach to yoga, the poses are infused with purpose and meaning, combining physical exercise with mindfulness to create a true meditation in motion. In this program, Bryan shares his more than four decades of experience practicing and teaching Power Yoga. Through interactive, nondogmatic, and lighthearted sessions—with plenty of time to practice teaching—you learn • Power Yoga’s philosophy and history • Brahma, a complete Power Yoga routine of about 40 asanas • The multi-dynamic possibilities of each pose • How to work with injuries and personalize a practice • Tips for turning your yoga practice into a business.

NOTE Bryan tends to use humor and explicit language in his programs. This program is held in a slightly heated room.

UNLOCKING BLOCKAGES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH CLARITY

Colleen Saidman Yee FOR women; all levels welcome, from beginner to advanced. CE credits.

There is no denying the power of a group of women. When women gather, something magical, raw, and real surfaces. We support each other as we bring to light the awareness that we are already enough. We spend so much time trying to prove that we are valid. When we stop and relax in the wisdom that there is nothing missing, we realize there is nothing “to get” that will make you whole or better or enough. We see that our strength is in our vulnerability and trust, not in our armor. We are stronger together.

FOR everyone. CE credits. We often think the answer to accomplishing more is to do more. But the chronic stress this mindset creates could be making you sick, slowing you down, and preventing you from performing at the top of your game. In this program based on her best-selling book, Stress Less, Accomplish More, leading meditation expert Emily Fletcher dives into the neuroscience of stress and shares the Z Technique, a practice that brings together • Mindfulness to get rid of your stress from the present • Meditation to release stress from the past • Manifestation to gain clarity on your dreams for the future. YOGA

MAY 25–29 MONDAY–FRIDAY

by Jeremy Rock Smith, Executive Chef

Yoga as Your Life Path

I like to think of eating and cooking as not so different from a yoga or meditation practice—there are guidelines, but we each choose the style that fits us best and results in maximum health and enjoyment.

WHAT’S YOUR WHY?

When I’m planning seasonal menus for Kripalu, I think about our primary intention: to provide healthy and nutritious meals that are satisfying to both mind and body—no matter how you’re feeling on that particular day or at that particular meal. Just as you adjust your yoga practice depending on your needs that day, or that hour, you can adjust the way you eat. Be in the moment and go with where you’re at. One morning, I’ll have kale and miso soup for breakfast and, the next day, I’m all over the scones or French toast. There’s so much information out there about how to eat that we sometimes forget to listen to ourselves. Our guests at Kripalu are often interested in experimenting with different approaches to eating, and they can do that here—and they can also find healthy comfort food. Just as our programs are diverse, so are our food offerings, from whole grains and locally sourced vegetables to organic animal proteins and vegan and gluten-free options. We each have a unique physical and emotional blueprint, and that means that the way we eat is unique as well. At Kripalu, our goal is to provide a wide variety of choices so that every individual can find what serves them best.

What You’ll Find in the Kripalu Dining Hall Main Buffet Line An array of vegetarian and nonvegetarian options—including breakfast egg dishes and baked goods; organic dairy, poultry, and fish; and whole grains and fresh vegetables Buddha Bar Simply prepared vegan soups, vegetables, grains, and legumes Sandwich Bar Homemade bread, wraps, organic and nitrate-free cold cuts, sustainably caught tuna, and house-made spreads

Sherry Sidoti and Jafar Alexander FOR all levels. CE credits. Consider your yoga practice as a life path. How does it propel you to listen, learn, and live from the heart and soul? What’s your WHY, and how do you courageously live it in your day-to-day life? In this devotional yoga retreat, you explore the wisdom that shows up in the body, and follow it with tools to transmute limitations and transform them into the strength we need for greater truthsharing. Through hatha vinyasa, bhakti, Yin Yoga, psoas release practices, meditations, mantra, music, and breathwork, you • Transmute: Bridge ancient wisdom to modern-day living in an accessible way • Transform: Find the courage to step out of your comfort zone and into your own healing • Share: Learn to speak your truth and openly share it with others for the good of all. When we ask, What is my why?, we are forced to see ourselves within the greater whole, and are inspired to return home more motivated by and devoted to our yoga practice. TUITION $325 + room & meals; p. 90

The feminine mystic is one who gathers the pain of the world into her arms and transmutes it with “wild mercy”—a merging of fierce courage with the unstoppable forces of forgiveness, compassion, and love. And she is needed now more than ever. In this weekend with Mirabai Starr, you engage in contemplative readings from the female mystics, group reflections, evocative writing exercises, interspiritual chanting, and silent sitting. Together, we weave these luminous elements into a basket of awakened community. TUITION $295 + room & meals; p. 90

A TRANSFORMATIONAL RETREAT

Ancient yoga texts speak of two lights within the body: the moon in the crown of the head, symbolizing the rational self, and the sun in the pelvis, representing the emotions. The conflict between these two forces causes all of life’s pain and suffering. Through postures and pranayama, the yogi converts solar energy into yogagni, the fire of yoga. This fire rises and dissolves the moon back into the Witness, the seed of the Self. When the sun and moon disappear, the yogi becomes the whole universe. Join a supportive community of fellow seekers in this life-changing retreat, which includes • Asana and pranayama • Esoteric teachings that make a lot of sense • Hope and inspiration for your spiritual journey. Skillfully distilling and interpreting yoga texts, Yoganand Michael Carroll provides information and offers techniques to deepen your practice when you return home. TUITION $395 + room & meals; p. 90

YOGANAND MICHAEL CARROLL, E-RYT 500, senior faculty member of the Kripalu School of Yoga, has a profound ability to distill and interpret esoteric yoga texts and techniques.

How Mindfulness Can Happier and More Effe One million people miss work every day due to stress. And two-thirds of us find our work unengaging and unmotivating. That stress and disengagement mean that while the quantity of our work escalates, the quality of all that time we’re putting in often plummets. Part of the challenge to our productivity comes from a mind that simply struggles to sit still. A 2010 Harvard study found that our minds are wandering away from what’s happening in the present moment a whopping 47 percent of the time. Even more striking, when our minds are wandering, we tend to be less happy than when we’re focused by Sam Chase on the here and now. What can we do to give ourselves a fighting chance at working in a way that’s engaging and effective? In Kripalu’s evidence-based resilience program, RISE™, one of the key tools we use to help workers in highstress fields perform well is mindfulness. By training the mind to pay attention to the present moment, on purpose, with an attitude of openness and nonjudgment, mindfulness exercises our ability to focus awareness and redirect it to the things we value. And the good news is that you don’t have to quit your day job and become a monk on a mountaintop in order to reap its benefits. Multiple studies, including one

right here at Kripalu with RISE participants, have found that even a brief experience of mindfulness practice over a few days improves attention and self-regulation, meaning that we’re better able to put attention where we need it, and keep it there when distractions pop up. But all the focused attention in the world won’t get us very far if we’re overwhelmed with the stuff piling up on our plate. When it comes to dealing with the demands of the day, mindfulness can also support us in managing our stress more skillfully. One study at Kripalu found that after a five-day RISE workshop, participants reported a 32 percent reduction in perceived stress—a change that lasted for months beyond the program. In meditators who keep up their practice over time, the brain begins to adapt and change the structures of the stress response; research has found that the amygdala becomes smaller, which translates into a mind and body that are less reactive to stressors, and better able to respond to challenges without being hijacked by the fight-or-flight response. Mindfulness can help us show up at work in a way that is calm, clear, and connected to the things that matter most in what we do; less rattled by the waves of the workplace; and better able to weed out distractions and get the job done.

Sam Chase, Lead Facilitator for the RISE program and a Kripalu Yoga teacher, has shared mindfulness principles and practices with employees at corporations and institutions such as the United Nations, the National Guard, Weill-Cornell Medical Center, and New York University.
