Offline at Kripalu This summer, let go of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and embrace being offline—at home, on vacation, or here at Kripalu. When we disconnect from technology, we’re actually creating greater connection. We cultivate presence, enhance mindfulness, and strengthen our ability to savor our in-themoment experience—what we’re doing right here, right now, not what we could or “should” be doing. Research shows that doing less and unplugging more ignites a sense of freedom, expansiveness, and well-being. Going offline supports our physical health as well: Reducing electronic stimuli calms the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) nervous system and activates the parasympathetic system, which controls the rest-and-digest functions that regulate heart rate, digestion, and immune function. And according to Ayurveda, unplugging also helps bring us into harmony with nature and its daily and seasonal rhythms—balancing what’s known as vata dosha, the quality associated with action, vision, and receiving information. Breaking the tech habit isn’t easy, but the rewards can be life changing. Learn more about how Ayurveda views technology, read about the evidence-based benefits of unplugging, and get tips for going offline kripalu.org/offline

Yoga for Injury Prevention and Management HOW TO STAY SAFE AND HAVE A PRACTICE OF LONGEVITY FOR YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS

Kari Harendorf and Glen de los Reyes FOR all levels, including yoga teachers who want to help students with injuries. CE credits.

Wrist issues; neck and shoulder dysfunction; low back, hip, and knee pain—as a culture, we are disconnected from our bodies. The underuse, overuse, and abuse of our joints often leads to inflammation, pain, or injury. Preventing an injury before it begins is the best way to avoid it in the future. Yoga can help us increase inner awareness of sensations, so we can listen to the feedback our body is giving us and become aware of our movement patterns and postural tendencies, restoring balance to our body and increasing well-being. Come explore • Where you are overexerting your body • Which joints you don’t have full range of motion in • Areas you have relied on and exhausted, making them ripe for injury • Functional movement patterns for preexisting injuries. By creating more space in the joints, we move out of compression and may increase the general health of the joint by being centered and balanced. CRISTIE NEWHART, Dean of the Kripalu School of Yoga, is a dynamic yoga teacher who imbues her classes with meditative inquiry, detailed alignment principles, and playful humor.

Our cover models, Nathan and Brett, practice yoga separately and together, and find it contributes to better communication and makes them more playful and daring as a couple. Their interest in yoga has opened up new shared experiences, and given them tools for self-care that they use in their work at a residential community for adults recovering from mentalhealth challenges. “I find myself practicing Nathan more physically grounding exercises and bringing my attention back to my breath and the present moment, and sharing these skills with the people I work with,” says Nathan. Between them, they’ve Brett been to Kripalu half a dozen times over the last couple of years, and love the opportunity to unplug from everyday routines and cultivate their interest in yoga and mind-body practices. “I’ve developed a greater openness to new and unknown parts of myself,” says Brett. “Each time I visit Kripalu, I walk away with an excitement to continue shifting the way I see myself in the world.” Cover photographer: Tricia McCormack 800.741.7353 or kripalu.org | 29

FOR everyone.

FOR everyone.

Technology impacts and shapes our lives in countless ways. While a relationship with technology certainly brings benefits and joy, it can also be fraught with imbalance. One way in which modern technology causes harm is in its impact on vision: the hours spent gazing at two-dimensional screens, and the mindset that develops when technology is at the center of our every action.

The essence of our spirit is found in the beat of our hearts, the beat of a drum, and the beat of our feet against the earth. SpiritFest is a perfect blend of uplifting experiences where you can dance, chant, and drum with others.

This program reinspires the act of sight, so we can move beyond the myopic focus conditioned by personal technologies. In this program, Marc Grossman, an optometrist dedicated to natural vision improvement, and Laura Sewall, a visual scientist committed to the power of attention, offer expert guidance to help you • Hone skills of attention

This program is for EMDR therapists who want to deepen their understanding of interpersonal neurobiology of attachment, exploring how their own attachment history informs their work with clients, particularly in challenging clinical situations. Here, we actively work with the somatic component of experience, the different parts of self in the therapist, as well as the relational dimension, taking what we already know to a deeper level, effecting change in ourselves as well as our clients. Supervised practice in dyads focuses on the therapist’s own personal attachment experiences. NOTE Tuition includes a manual. TUITION $715 plus housing; p. 86

TRAUMA, BODY, and THE BRAIN RESTORING THE CAPACITY FOR RHYTHM AND PLAY Bessel van der Kolk and Licia Sky FOR mental-health professionals and all those working on helping others or themselves to heal from traumatic stress. CE credits.

Awareness of physical sensations forms the very foundation of our human consciousness. Overwhelming experiences are lived out in heartbreak and gut-wrenching sensations, which leave survivors feeling frazzled, on edge, overwhelmed, and shut down. The trauma that started outside is lived out in the theater of the body, and survivors no longer feel safe inside their own skin. Recovery from trauma involves learning how to restore a sense of visceral safety and reclaiming a loving relationship with oneself. Rooted in the themes addressed in Bessel van der Kolk’s best-selling book, The Body Keeps the Score, this experiential and didactic course explores how mind and brain are shaped by experience. Learn how your relationship to yourself is intertwined with your synchronicity with those around you while exploring • What neuroscience teaches about self-awareness and trauma • The nature and essence of human attachment • New treatments that help integrate traumatic memories • Body-centered approaches for dealing with trauma. INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS THERAPY EMBODYING THE HEALING WISDOM Richard C. Schwartz and Sarah Stewart FOR everyone, including mental-health professionals, therapists, non-therapists, and seasoned IFS practitioners. CE credits.

The world’s religions teach that there is an untarnished essence within us, a Self from which wisdom, healing, and spiritual energy flow. We rarely experience this Self because it is obscured by self-protective psychological mechanisms, or lost in the fear, pain, and shame of past trauma. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model helps you access the Self and bring its natural compassion and confidence into daily life. People who have used IFS report profound shifts in previously constraining feelings and beliefs. IFS introduces you to a detailed map of your psyche, including all subpersonalities and their inner conflicts. The Self then forms healing relationships with each of them. Whether you want to deepen your skills or do personal work, this program offers the opportunity for transformative inner exploration and learning. TUITION $540 plus housing; p. 86

ELENA BROWER, mother, author, yoga teacher, and speaker, is recognized internationally for her expertise in offering practices to approach the world with realistic reverence.

JESS MAGIC is a musical storyteller and singer who invites her audiences and other performing artists to be a part of the creative process.

Ayurveda teaches that summer is the pitta time of year, when the fiery pitta dosha, or quality, rules. In hot temps, pitta can get out of balance, leaving us with irritation and indigestion. What we eat can either exacerbate or ease heat—that’s why the Kripalu Kitchen changes up our menu seasonally. In summer, you’ll find lots of pitta-pacifying options, like organic, local greens; fresh fruit; chilled soups; and herbal iced teas. Try these Ayurvedic tips to stay cool this summer: • Drink coconut water with a squeeze of lime. • Choose leafy greens with a bitter, astringent flavor, like watercress, arugula, spinach, and kale. • Avoid overly salty, oily, fried, and spicy foods, including onions, garlic, and processed and canned foods. • Use cooling herbs like mint, cilantro, and basil, which also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE AND MEDITATION

AUGUST 19–21 WEDNESDAY–FRIDAY

AUGUST 21–23 FRIDAY–SUNDAY

Mother Tara Empowerment

A Buddhist Healing Ritual

FOR everyone.

DAKINI’S HEART-ESSENCE CHÖD AND EMPOWERMENTS FOR everyone.

Experience bliss, abundance, and strength as you overcome the layers of destructive emotions—including stress, fear, anxiety, and/or addiction—built up over past years and lives. The Mother Tara Empowerment ceremony, given by Lama Migmar Tseten according to the Tibetan tantric tradition, helps you awaken the enlightened wisdom mother already present within you.

Healing Chöd is an ancient Buddhist ritual known for its power to alleviate physical, emotional, and mental suffering. There are no instructions to follow or techniques to learn. One simply lies down, rests, and receives healing. Healing Chöd is suitable for everyone, including those with chronic or mild conditions.

During this program, Lama Migmar bestows the healing empowerments of the white, gold, red, and green Taras and guides you in Sanskrit mantra and sacred Tibetan recitations with English translations. He also gives instructions in meditation and mudra to experience the true nature of body, speech, and mind.

Healing Chöd rituals consist of music, prayers, and mantras in the sacred sounds of Sanskrit and Tibetan; transformative mudras and offerings; and meditation to cut through destructive emotions and repel negative energies and obstacles. Empowerments are given to further increase healing blessings.

TUITION $280 plus housing; p. 86

LAMA MIGMAR TSETEN has served as Buddhist chaplain at Harvard University since 1997 and is founder of the Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dakini’s Heart-Essence Chöd is based on the female Buddha, Vajrayogini. It originated with the 10th-century Indian yogi Mahasiddha Naropa, and was passed down to Lama Migmar’s guru, Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, also the guru of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Spend focused and intentional time to get out of your head and into your body. Learn practical tools that allow you to share emotions, speak truth, gain support, and celebrate greatness. Evryman’s process is intense yet straightforward, exploring the power of vulnerability through group exercises, guided conversation, and mindful time in nature. In creating a space free of sarcasm and judgment, you can discover your authentic self. NOTE This program has extended hours that might make it difficult to participate in other Kripalu activities or receive Healing Arts services. See kripalu.org for more information. TUITION $600 plus housing; p. 86

DAN DOTY, cofounder and voice of Evryman, has been featured on the Today Show, as a three-time guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, and on dozens of other podcasts, including hosting the Evryman podcast.
