Mohapi meets with KB&T Tharine Hurter

IN a change of attitude, Jihad Mohapi, executive mayor, met with the chairperson of Kroonstad Business and Tourism (KB&T), Piet Cordier, on Thursday. This follows an intervention by former mayor of Kroonstad, Tony Khoury, who arranged a meeting with Cordier and Mohapi to “break the ice”. “I have a passion for Kroonstad and it breaks my heart to see my town go down,” Khoury said. A formal letter of apology from Mohapi to KB&T was issued to KB&T on Friday. Mohapi wrote in the letter that his office apologised for their late response to KB&T’s request for a meeting, which was due to the unprotected strike at the municipality. He apologised to the business community for any inconvenience caused for not being able to provide basic services as this was due to disruptions that occurred in their institution during the illegal strike. Khoury took notes of the meeting where both parties committed themselves to a cordial relationship and that services would be restored to ratepayers to as normal as possible. Mohapi said the non-communication was due to the disruption of services, personnel and other problems. KB&T tried to meet with Mohapi to discuss the ongoing strike and degeneration of Kroonstad since the start of the strike in January. “The meeting on Friday is a move in the right direction,” Cordier said. After the special council meeting with Olly Mlamleli, MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, and an interview with Kroonnuus afterwards, Mohapi told Kroonnuus that he had a good relationship with KB&T and had embarked on programmes to uplift the town. “My door is open to the public,” Mohapi said. ) Watch the video at www.kroonnuus.co.za.

Workers will not be reinstated Tharine Hurter THE 33 municipal workers of Moqhaka who have embarked on an unprotected strike and who were dismissed will not be reinstated in their positions. “From our side we have pleaded that they return to work, but they ignored us,” Olly Mlamleli, MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, said at a special Moqhaka Council meeting on Wednesday. The investigation report on the allegations of mismanagement and use of municipal funds, as well as appointments at the municipality, was tabled at this meeting

by Mlamleli. Stephen Kau, chief of staff in the Treasury Department, was the chairperson for this investigation. Jihad Mohapi, executive mayor of Moqhaka, said the correct procedures had been followed to dismiss the workers. Mariette Pittaway, DA Caucus leader in Moqhaka, said her party had consulted with an attorney on the dismissal. “The attorney said that the dismissal was unlawful. This will lead to arbitration, which will cost the already bankrupt municipality millions.” She and her party stand by their statement that Mncedisi Mqwathi is incompetent as a municipal manager.
