Moqhaka has new leaders Choice of Mareka as executive mayor comes as a surprise Tharine Hurter MOQHAKA has a new executive mayor, Justice Mareka. This former chief whip of the Moqhaka Council was inaugurated on Wednesday. Tshidi Koloi has been elected as the ANC chief whip. The choice of Mareka as mayor came as a surprise, since Koloi has been acting as mayor for several months in the absence of Jihad Mohapi, the former mayor. He is now a member of the National Council of Provinces. Mareka thanked the residents of Moqhaka for their loyal support: “Even when things seem hard, they are always there to give support to their beloved government.” He said that the youth of Moqhaka had made a significant contribution in the liberation of the country and that Moqhaka had to strive to be as inclusive as possible to fast-track youth development. “It is time to focus on work, work and work. Moqhaka deserves only the best efforts from everybody, whether they are in the political leadership, in management, in all positions within our administration and across the spectrum of our partners in business, labour, the faith-based community or civil society,” said Mareka. “I want to express, at the outset of my tenure as executive mayor, my willingness to work together with all political parties and stakeholders. This will enable us to find workable solutions for the diverse range of developmental challenges facing Moqhaka as we work cooperatively to change the image of our municipality.” He thanked the leadership of the ANC “for the confidence they expressed in me by pointing their fingers at me to be the captain of this ship. My appreciation also goes to this council for their vote of confidence displayed

today.” Koloi accepted her new position as a great honour and not a priviledge. “There is no unity without the guidance of the Almighty God,” she said.

She vowed to do her best for Moqhaka. André Masuret, DA councillor, said he was delighted that Mareka wants to work with opposition parties. “The main purpose is to

deliver better services to the community,” said Masuret. Thys Vermeulen, Freedom Front + councillor, gave his commitment to work together to better the services of Moqhaka. Vermeulen was the former town

engineer of Kroonstad. Abram Mokoetsi, Cope councillor, said the newly appointed mayor and whip should not forget where they come from and give recognition to the leaders of the past.
