GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 7

Editor’s Letter Two years ago when Krowd Magazine launched its first ever issue, we were like “OMG we did it!” even though that issue only had about 25 pages of content. At that point we were like toddlers crawling from point A to B playing with lego toys. We really didn’t have a clue about what we were doing, but what we did know was that we wanted to become the best Fashion magazine in the city. Looking back to our humble beginnings, I can sincerely say that Krowd has improved in terms of a better team and better resources. I meet new people and talk to them about Krowd magazine and some of them go “WOW that’s a cool job!” yes it is a cool and fun job but a lot of work goes into making a specific issue come to Life. The team is responsible for making sure that Writers, Photographers, Makeup artists, Hair stylists and Models are all comfortable and ready to produce wonderful projects for our readers. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to Krowd Issue 5 “GLAMOUR UNTAMED”. In this issue, we decided to work based on the theme, Glamour Untamed. This theme allowed our contributors to break barriers in their respective fields and projects. Our creatives were allowed to come up with content that openly or precisely define the word Untamed – “Expressing ones self without restrictions through fashion”. Thank you once again to everyone who helped in making this edition a success and we hope to work with you all again soon. In the meantime, enjoy the untamed. We wish our new readers, contributors and fans a good read!

T

o be bold means to be strong, and that is what african clothing is all about. Its unique materials, intricate designs and well matched colours have such an imposing vivid appearance, which is what makes the gorgeous apparels standout. African prints have become a trademark in the fashion industry. A lot of designers have modernized these once traditional garments. Kaela Kay, Nubia Nation, and Nani Designs to name a few are forward thinking, daring, and bright creative African designers. The amazing thing about African wear is it can also be worn as a simple add-on accessory piece. Its vibrant colours are used to complete casual attire. As seen in these pictures, the beautiful young ladies are rocking the three designers mentioned earlier. They are showcasing them very well, with different ways to wear the garments and how to accessorise them.

Owning a pair of denim should be the first expensive purchase in ones wardrobe. A simple pair with regular fit should come first, then one can indulge in the fun ones. These all depend on every individuals’ style. Here is Fidede Efretuei’s list of fabulous & fun ones.

The new Fashion by: Surina Nath

Trends come and go like seasons, and fads typically drop faster than leaves in fall — this is mainly due to constant stimulation of the media; but how does social media influence what we see as fashionable today? Social media does many amazing things. It helps individuals in our society feel like they are part of something so much bigger than what meets the eye. Let's use Instagram as a foundation: this app has quickly become one of the smartest innovations in the photography world due to the fact that it makes everyone feel individual and unique with respect to their own photography. Now it's extremely easy to follow your favourite celebrities, brands or models to check out what's new in the fashion world. If you have yet to check out the Socality Barbie account it's hilarious, despite the fact that the photos are basically a mock of every single hipster female on Instagram today. The photos usually include a typical shawl wearing, glasses bearing, coffee drinking, girl (well Barbie) that takes photos in front of statues and lakes to appear insightful. As entertaining as this is, we have to remember that this is based on both reality and fact. 44 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

The reality we are living in, is that we all have big square glasses, printed shawls, and love taking photo's walking through nature. Before Socality Barbie pointed out, this has been the endless trend of 2014/15. Instagram has shown us that we influence each other via posting identical pictures with identical filters — we all tend to see a photo that looks cool with someone that has cool clothes, so obviously another person is going to copy the idea, because that’s how social media works. With the click of a button (or tap of a screen) we are able to virtually unite ourselves based on interests as broad as fashion and lifestyle. Socality Barbie also shows us the classic modern aged hipster: Hipster is an example of old styles coming new; and this is exactly how social media influences the fashion world. The internet is able to somehow create trends, throw them away, bring them back twenty years later, and have them appear as genius. Punks have become 'Alternatives' and Hippies have become Hipsters. Hipster is one of the most interesting trends that has a multitude of traffic on social media. Woodstock is now known as Coachella, tie dye is everywhere, and it's again common for boys to have longer hair than girls. We see that through social media we are able to perfect and refine styles emulated today.

As amazing and useful as the internet is, social media's influence on the fashion world regarding women, tends to take us centuries back from where we stand today. Malala Yousafzai, an eighteen-year-old educational activist, was placed next to Kendall and Kylie Jenner in 'Times Most Influential Teens of 2014'. This insult to female influence isn’t the Jenner's fault, as they cannot possibly control the spread of publicity on social media, but they could at least use the mass amount of attention that they have to do more than have magazine covers, sponsors and a large lipped community. The Kardashian’s have somehow hypnotized majority of the teenage western world through waist trainers, face contouring and lip plumping. This is quite possibly one of the most mindless and harmful things social media has promoted this year through television, Snapchat, Twitter (and every other media platform for that matter). There are both positives and negatives regarding the influence social media has on fashion. Pros: all hipsters and Kardashians aside; army, nautical and retro styles are all coming back around the corner, along with layers and khaki’s, which are only a few of the trending looks we see online today. Individuality is what fashion is about, which is why social media should be used to bring new and unique styles to the table. Ruby Rose, for example, has quickly become a massive

social icon due to her 'Break Free' Video on YouTube. The video is incredibly beautiful, regards gender fluidity and has received over twelve million views in the past year. In the video Ruby goes from being a blonde, preppy, makeup wearing girl, to the dark haired, inked up Ruby Rose that we know and love. This woman manages to emulate The Hipster and a (blonde) Kardashian all at once because the media exposes us to so many styles that help us discover what makes each of our styles individual. Social media today does help society feel like individuals, and fashion is a clear expression of individuality in itself. The cool thing about this, is that the media brings individuals together to appreciate one and other. The media is basically a massive recycling bin of photos, making it extremely easy to pick and choose looks from different era’s. With back to school, and the change of seasons, comes new and inspiring fashion choices that are everywhere in the media. We should choose to embrace our individuality, use social media as a platform to unite with others, and create a collage of your future self. x GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 45

You

may have been walking down the street, on the infamous OC Transpo, or maybe over dinner at Moxies, but this dreaded sentence has been uttered. “Ottawa is the city that fun forgot. Now, although this may have been true in the past few years - after all, I have yet to see Bey Bey do the Crazy In Love dip at TD Canada Place - but currently, Ottawa is in revival mode and it has loaded up with the greatest weapon in the roster.

Fashion, being one of the greatest weapons, fashion is redefining Ottawa with every step. Whether it be a splash of red, or a dash of neon, Ottawa citizens are a force to be reckoned with. 48 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

So let this be an ode to whomever has ever said Ottawa is the city fun forgot, you clearly have yet to step outside.

The greatest ability of fashion is its ability to be diverse and innovative. Whether it be leggings and an oversized top, or the matching of wild and irresistible patterns and colours, fashion in Ottawa always has its best foot forward.

ALL FOR FALL A compilation of fall trends featuring articles from Danièle Ange (Hot Culotte, White Jeans, A-line Skirt and The Plaid) Jalen Nelson (Warm up for fall: Fall trends for men).

ALL

FOR

FAL

HOT CULOTTE

The key to wearing this cropped pant into fall is by paring it with a midiboot (falls slightly below the knee). Gives you the needed coverage, without overpowering the pant. To complete the look, add a few more layers with a great long nit and a denim jacket to top it off. 54 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 55

56 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

WHITE JEANS

When it gets cold, just add a long blouse and a cape/or poncho and finish the look with a pair of grunge booties and a fringe bag.

GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 57

A-LINE SKIRT

To transition this piece, add a turtle-neck for warmth and layer it with a pea-coat for added interest and detail; which also helps to accent the waist. For those who like a little more edge; throw in a pair of patterned hosiery for added texture and dimension! Accessorize with ankle boots to finish the look.

GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 59

THE PLAID

This is perhaps the easiest and comfiest to transition; simply wear with a pair of skinny jeans, layer with a chunky sweater and top it off with a vest or military jacket to give it some edge! 60 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

WARM UP FOR FALL Leather jackets are a prime example of a popular men’s trend that hasn’t died and I don’t think will. These jackets are a great source for fall but not only that, they’re excessively stylish and look good with almost any item you put it together with. Jeans, trousers, sweats, long line tees, and short sleeve tees, you name it and leather jackets can be paired up with these items.

62 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

1. LEATHER JACKETS

My favourite part about a leather jacket has to be the fact that it has a belt buckle going around the jacket. People don’t usually tie it around the leather jacket but leaving it out on the jacket creates a fashion forward purpose and look’s amazing. This trend will always keep men looking great for the season.

Plaid Pants are considered to be another popular trend simply because it adds a lot of versatility to your outfit which means the rest of your outfit could be plain, but adding the plaid pants can make your outfit an outfit if you get the drift. Every time I think of plaid, I think fall/ winter just because it has that vibe no matter what kind of color pattern it is. They’re fun to wear, amazingly coordinated when put together with simple pieces and will always be a fashion forward piece. Plaid is one of those things/trends that rarely go out style also, wearing it the correct way will enhance its trend staying in style. Plaid pants are one thing but imagine plaid suits, even more amazing.

2. PLAID PANTS Blazers are one of the biggest trends for me when it comes to the fall/winter season and has gotten more popular year by year. I remember when blazers used to be worn only if you had a wedding to go or strictly business attire but these past years guys have been wearing it casually with a bit of a fashion forward edge to it. It’s always great wearing a casual everyday blazer followed by an everyday look underneath it. The one thing that I can say about blazer’s that everyone can agree on is that you could dress it up or down and it would still have the same fashion forward effect to the outfit, blazers are definitely a statement piece.

3. BLAZERS GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 63

6. BOOTIES Booties, Combat Boots, Chelsea’s are another statement piece that is actually a huge trend for the fall/winter season. These types of boots have been in for a very long time and have not gone out of style. Not only do they keep your feet warm but they have your feet looking stylish and ready to run the streets with your fashion. These go well with suits, casual looks, dress looks, or even when you just want to grab a bite to eat in your sweats. These are fall affiliated and have also been a big trend over the years.

4. OXFORDS

5. JOGGERS

Oxford’s are definitely a fashion forward statement for the 2015 fall season for Men. Oxford’s look amazing with so many different style of outfits you wouldn’t even imagine. They look good with suits, they look good with casual wear, they even look good with certain edgy looks when put together the right way.

Casual Joggers are definitely a great trend for the fall/ winter season and have made an impact this year in Men’s fashion. They’re comfortable and they’re very unique, giving all men the chance to appreciate this statement piece to rock it however they want to rock it.

These shoes give Men who are not into Oxford’s leeway just because they may think that these shoes only work for strictly suits which some guy’s really aren’t into. Showing Men that these can be worn with casual outfits also, gives them an opportunity to experience a pair and wear them the way they want which is why it’s become so popular. Oxford’s are a definitely a trend that goes unnoticed for the fall/winter season. 64 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

What I like about casual Joggers is that you can also dress them up or down just like a casual blazer. It looks good either way and even though it’s not too extravagant or out of the box, it’s different enough to be labelled as fashion forward. This item looks great with dress shoes, sports shoes or even casual slip-ons. What way to just slip something on quickly and looks just as a good as wearing suit pants or expensive jeans for that matter

Helena-Alexis would become your woman crush everyday for you single guys. Jay Ryan who stars on the CW show Beauty & the Beast would not have been able to resist Helena’s beauty if it wasn’t for the gun shots fired as she played the role of a Cop/ Stripper in episode 6 of season 3. The young actress who started her career at just 9 years old with a role in a Post Golden Raisin Crisp cereal commercial, has now starred in the 2015 Oscar winning movie Birdman...

Holds out her name high as a sign of a strong woman ready to face the world. Bold, beautiful and untamed! ...On the day Krowd Met with Helena at the Moscow Tea Room restaurant for a chit-chat, she made us all feel comfortable with a lovely smile and filled the atmosphere with interesting stories of her experiences in life thus far. Here are some interesting things you probably don’t know about Helena, she reads a lot of spiritual books in her spare time, she loves cooking, and enjoys dancing and Yoga to be in sync with mother nature. The conversation continues as Helena talks about her experiences and how she defines a strong woman. GLAMOUR UNTAMED - 99

THE COP STRIPPER ROLE Did you enjoy the role of a Cop stripper in the TV Series “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST? - I did! I knew the CW Network was a family network so everything was going to be done very playful and light. It felt great to celebrate my body via my art.

THE FUTURE Every time I visualize myself in five years the vision changes. What l know for sure is that I will be living my passion in the city of my dreams with the best & strongest web of friends and fans

THE REALITY What advice would you give to someone trying to join the industry? - Do it! If it makes your heart sing and dance, then follow your passion and remain focused and grateful for the entire journey.

PASSION FOR FASHION I always played “make believe” with my brother and cousins and put on talent shows in the basement as a child. At age nine, when I went to my first International Modelling and Talent Association Convention in New York City, I realized it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

“THE LINE” EXPERIENCE Booking the TV Series “The Line” on HBO/TMN was the moment I realized “Wow, dreams really do come true.” I am so grateful. The entire cast and crew were the sweetest and by the end of it we became very close, like family.

A STRONG WOMAN What is your definition of a Strong Woman? - She is empowered. She stands up for herself, she is unpredictable, she is independent, she is confident and she shows up with all she’s got every day with her head held high and the universe in her heart. She is untamed!

THE OSCAR MOMENT Did you ever think you would be in an Oscar winning movie, Birdman? - Yes, I did. I dream big and practice how I would feel or what I would say in those moments. Maybe I manifested it

Krowd Magazine’s feautred creatives

Jodianne: “With True Passion, Comes Success” Jodianne Beckford is a lifestyle & fashion photographer based in Toronto, Canada. She is of Jamaican decent, and was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her parents relocated her family to Canada when she was 3 years old. Jodianne has always had a love for photography, but not until 2013 when she moved to Ottawa did she have the opportunity to really take it to the next step and learn the technical aspect of the craft. She was taught by a fellow photographer Thomas Cumberbatch of Tommy Bokeh photography, who also happens to be her cousin. YouTube was also a huge part of her learning process, especially when it came to learning Photoshop & Lightroom. Jodianne discovered her niche while working as a wedding photographer. It was then that she realized that capturing life’s most special moments was her gift. As they say, the rest is history. She was instantly hooked and hasn’t looked back since. Recently after having moved back to Toronto, she began an initiative titled The”E”project; “E” stand for entrepreneur. Jodianne’s ultimate goal is to encourage and uplift those who are thinking of pursuing their own path. She wants to show them to know that they are not alone and she also wants to show them that by working hard, staying motivated and consistent, they too can be successful and have their passions come to life.

104 - GLAMOUR UNTAMED

My process is quite easy. I meet with my prospective creatives and once I have gotten to know more about them we then schedule the interview and photo session. I always make sure to choose a location where they feel most at ease, its usually where they go for inspiration. I photograph them doing what they love, and then follow with an interview, polaroid photo, and I capture them writing in the black book. This book is for them to write how they feel about the project, and their experience throughout. Overall, this is a platform to showcase all of the entrepreneurs of this generation. I think that having them read advice from previous entrepreneurs who have written in the book sparks something in them and get them to believe that they too can do it. I have had the pleasure and honor of interviewing some amazing people. Below are just a few of the awesome entrepreneurs! x • • • • •

M

y full name is Florence O. Oramasionwu (but everybody calls me Flo). I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Both of my parents are Nigerian. I’ve been singing since I could remember. It’s something that I always did, I drove my friends and family crazy because I was always singing. I was a closet singer until an opportunity came for me to audition for a solo, one that I knew in my heart I so desperately wanted and would regret it if I didn’t pick up the courage to audition. When I got the solo and performed on stage, I became a different person, like this vibrant person emerged from her shell. It was amazing, I couldn’t get enough of the stage and the reaction of those around me confirmed that something special had just occurred. Another experience that finally told me that I had to seriously pursue music was Canadian Idol. To be around so many like-minded people who were all pursuing the same goal, did something to me. It really fired up my engine and told me, that’s it: you’re doing this

Some people think singers do not get nervous but I do ALL THE TIME! And you think it would stop, but no, the bats (not butterflies) flapping their wings in my stomach doesn’t stop and I find that the more I care about a performance, the more nervous. I get but here’s the good news, I heard in an interview that getting nervous is very normal, in fact it’s a good thing. That even music legends/icons still get nervous. They say that if you stop getting nervous it’s not good, it just means that you really don’t care anymore and the nervousness usually gets converted into adrenaline which results in a killer performance. So do I love the nervous feeling? No, but, I know that something good will come of it on the stage and that it’s very normal.

Moments with Flo Music

S

haring the stage with Boyz II Men and Lauryn Hill was literally a dream come true! It was incredible, beyond words!!! I mean, if you’d gone back into the past with a time machine and told little Flo that she’d be sharing the stage with such music icons, she probably would have laughed in your face with disbelief but it’s a testament to the fact that all things are possible, and dreams really do come true! It’s given me the fuel that I need to aim higher and dream bigger dreams! I expect lots of things in the near future. But I’ll play the coy card and just say that you’ll just have to stay tuned (I believe that actions speaks louder than words) and see what’s to come ;) I’ve done some self-reflection as I’ve evolved as an artist, and have decided that these three words define my style and who I am as an artist; Soul, Urban, Pop I have so many goals that they could easily take up at least a page, but to sum it up best - to reach my potential and be the best artist I can be. For my music to touch, stir, and pierce as many hearts, minds, and souls as possible. For my music to know no boundaries, for it to transcend the limits of genre, age, gender and creed. For it to connect with people, and for it to become ageless, classic, and pass the test of time meaning that even if it’s played 5, 10, or 15 years or more later it’s still good! Think of the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston. They’ve all created music that has surpassed the test of time, still sounds good decades later! For my music to make a difference in the lives of people.

1. Heat the coconut oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook the onion and garlic with the turmeric until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the carrots and ginger and mix to combine. 2. Add the vegetable broth and coconut milk and mix to combine. 3. Remove the outer leaves of the lemongrass stalks, chop off both ends and bash the stalks on top of a chopping board to release their aroma. Place the lemongrass stalks on top of the broth. 4. Cover the saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 30 to 40 minutes until the carrots are completely soft. 5. PurĂŠe the soup with an immersion blender until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper. 6. Serve the soup in bowls topped with some lime zest and chopped parsley.

The Apple Tart By The Fancy Nancy Optional for serving: Caramel sauce (store bought is fine) Chopped pecans Ice cream… the list is endless! Tools: Parchment paper or non-stick cooking spray. I used parchment paper.

INGREDIENTS 1 whole sheet of puffed pastry 1 cup of brown sugar ¼ teaspoon of salt juice of ½ a lemon 4 whole apples

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. 2. Line the baking pan with parchment paper or spray it with non-stick cooking spray and place the puffed pastry on top. 3. Core, halve and thinly slice the apple and place them in a large mixing bowl. 4. Add the sugar, lemon juice and salt. Stir to blend evenly. Set aside for 7-10 minutes. 5. Arrange the apple slices on the pastry. I like the diagonal arrangement as it looks beautiful when the tart is cooked. Do not pour the sugary mixture over the tart. 6. Place in the oven and set your timer for 25 minutes. Keep in mind to check the tart as the time goes to make sure nothing is burning as heat varies from oven to oven. 7. Once your tart is ready, remove it from the baking pan and place on a platter or grid. 8. Serve with your preferred topping and enjoy!
