As a little girl my dreams and aspirations revolved around princesses and fairy tales. When I embarked upon opening La Beau my dreams went back to childhood and La Beau has been decorated and furnished with a pastel pink, pretty very feminine theme that makes everyone who visits feel special. Cathereine Kitson and floral intonations are on the walls, along with feathers and frills of relaxing tranquil beauty.

As a “grown up” I have wanted the dreams of childhood to embrace all ladies desires for feeling special, whether for a night out, a romantic dinner, the confidence boost for working life right up to the pinnacle of most women’s dreams; being a bride. We at La Beau, myself and my fabulous nail technicians, love nothing more than pampering and glamorising a perspective bride to be. Come and visit us and discuss your wants and needs for your very special day. We have a myriad of colours and finishes to choose from and the artwork that my girls and I can achieve for you are literally to infinity and beyond. When you find the right wedding dress it’s often an instant reaction. You try on a dress and it becomes the dress. You’ll often know when you’ve found the dress because when you try it on for the first time, you and everyone in the shop will get a little teary eyed; no one knows why, it just happens... A lot of lucky women have a love at first sight feeling about their dress, but others aren’t so fortunate – their dream dress eludes them. Considering what’s best for the season you’re marrying in may very well steer you in the right direction and, with a little help from La Belle, you and your dress will find each other a lot quicker.

12

www.labellemag.com

Spring can be a changeable season; April showers and March winds abound. Your outfit needs to be just as variable and accessories are the key here. Have a pair of wellies to hand for any muddy walks; it’s better to be over prepared than risk mud on your hem and shoes. If you’re only planning on braving the outdoors for a few minutes at a time then invest in an umbrella; they’re perfect if you’re only dashing from a car to the church etc. If you’re walking for any longer consider getting a cape or mac instead – umbrellas really don’t keep you dry for long periods and if the wind is strong your lovely hairstyle could end up looking more wind swept than wedding worthy. It’s also worth considering investing in a shrug or wrap to keep you warm should the temperature drop; layering is an ideal way to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the day. All of these options can be made to look suitably bridal and many bespoke companies make customised shrugs, wellies and umbrellas to make the practical, personal. Brides choosing a more casual reception can enhance the spring feeling with flower garlands, this is particularly beautiful worn in the brides hair, on shoes or on the dress. We’d recommend not doing all three – you don’t want to feel like a walking garden centre. One way to pay homage to the spring season is a pastel wedding dress. It may not be for everyone, but coloured dresses are becoming ever more popular.

www.labellemag.com

If you’re a non-traditional bride, take the plunge and try a mint, blush or pale blue dress for size. They’re more subtle than the bright red creations gracing the catwalks and give a delicate, feminine air while still making a bold, bridal statement. If you’d rather keep it traditional; simple lines in satin or silk evoke a fresh spring feeling or you could choose a floaty chiffon/ tulle gown for that ultra-feminine feel. Another perfect addition to a spring bridal gown are sleeves – ever since Kate Middleton walked down the aisle in her gorgeous sleeved gown they’ve risen in popularity and they’re perfect for a spring wedding. Sleeves will keep you slightly warmer in the cool spring winds but because they’re lightweight and often lace or sheer they won’t overheat you. If your ceremony is on the warmer side of spring there’s always the option of a shorter wedding dress that sits anywhere from tea length to just above the knee; it will solve all your outdoor, muddy wedding woes and will suit a more relaxed spring wedding perfectly.

Don’t forget to really use the wedding dress shop staff too (otherwise known as your fairy godmothers!) and ask for their advice on ideal spring gowns. They’ll have the experience to lend an ear and some advice on what works best for spring weddings and what will complement your body type.

Your first step should be to find a professional hair stylist. Talk through your ideas with them and bring them a few photos for inspiration. Pictures are a much easier way to communicate your vision and reduce the risk of confusion. When you’re planning your hairstyle with a stylist, don’t forget to tell them whether your wedding is formal or relaxed because this will affect the look of your hairstyle. A boho wedding, for example, would work best with loose waves, braids or perhaps a messy chignon. A formal wedding will naturally suit more sleek styles; up do’s, buns or sleek curls. If you’re wearing a veil, tiara or Juliet cap you will need to think about how to incorporate this into your style too. Veils come in many forms

22

and shapes and some will work better with your hairstyle than others; particularly when it comes to fixing any veils or pins to your head. Bring any headpieces or accessories with you to the consultation with your stylist and they should be able to advise you on the best style to go with. When you’re looking for hair inspiration you might not have to look any further than your own head. Unless you’ve got your heart set on a particular style, use your everyday look as inspiration. Walking up the aisle with a totally alien hairstyle might make you feel more uncomfortable or nervous then you need to be. We’re not suggesting you arrive at your wedding in your ‘Gym ponytail’, but think about whether your hair is normally up or down, curly or straight and work with that.

www.labellemag.com

A bride’s hair is the cherry on top of her whole wedding outfit so it’s important it’s as perfect as it can be. www.labellemag.com

Another way to settle any hair related nerves is to make sure you have a trial about a month or two beforehand. By trying several of the options you and your stylist have agreed on you can be sure you’ve made the right choice. Don’t be afraid to consider a hairstyle you hadn’t thought about before too, when you see yourself wearing it you might change your mind. Avoid getting a colour change the day before your wedding. Any colour needs roughly two weeks to settle down a little and if anything goes awry it will leave you very little time to fix anything that goes wrong. Try to avoid any crazy colours too unless you’ve been rocking that look for a while – it might be tempting for daring brides to go turquoise for their wedding but, if you’ve never tried it before, it’s a huge risk for the biggest day of your life. The same goes for any hair cuts you might want; make sure to allow the cut two weeks to settle so it doesn’t look too harsh or blunt on the day. You’ll obviously have a lot on your mind when the day comes around but try to remember that you’ll be getting your hair done before you get changed into your dress. Wear something that you can take off later without messing up your perfectly coiffed ‘do’ or your makeup later on. As with the whole wedding process, it’s vital that you trust and communicate with the professionals involved. Make sure that your stylist is on the same page as you throughout and talk to them if you feel the style strays too far from your original vision. If you achieve this together then you’ll be free to enjoy your wedding day knowing you look head-totoe beautiful rather than pulling your hair out.

Spring... A time of lambs and chocolate eggs…sorry, rebirth and renewal. It’s the perfect symbol of a new chapter in your life as a Mr or Mrs. Flowers are blooming, a small menagerie of baby animals are being born and if you’re quite lucky the sun is shining – all you’re missing are cartoon bluebirds singing in harmony and it’s practically a Disney movie. Anytime between March and May falls in the Spring season and whilst you shouldn’t feel that a wedding during these months has to be some kind of spring homage – fluffy bunnies in the church aisles and your wedding party in Easter bonnets – there are certain colours and themes that really compliment spring and will give you a helping hand when planning your wedding. So, if you want to incorporate the joys of spring into your wedding, where’s the best place to start?

Colour scheme is one of the best decisions to start with as all the big choices branch off from here; florists, cakes and bridesmaids dresses all require a colour scheme to coordinate with. Spring

www.labellemag.com

is typically associated with pastel tones - baby blues, dusky pinks, lilacs and soft yellows – but you shouldn’t be afraid to go a bit more vibrant if that’s more your style – fresh greens, sky blues and bold pinks are just as fun in springtime. You could even combine pastel and bright for a less typical spring theme. Fashion forward brides take note: Pantone have officially announced the colour of 2014 as Radiant Orchid, a warm lilac-pink and perfect spring/ summer wedding colour You can also mix some patterns into your chosen colour scheme; gingham, polka dot, striped and floral prints are a perfect match. These patterns are particularly effective if you’re dressing your venue with bunting or chair sashes. Get crafty and create a swatch board; pin your favourite patterns and fabrics together so can visualise your big day. This will also help you see and feel fabrics in the flesh if you’re not sure certain textures will work. If you’re not such a hands-on crafty bride get yourself a Pinterest account and start collecting ideas; check out our very own inspiration boards at www.pinterest.com/labellemag to give you some ideas and help you get started – we’ll warn you now though, it’s highly addictive!

Lucky spring brides have some fantastic options when it comes to flowers. Many classic wedding flowers begin blooming in spring including Lilac, Daffodils and Tulips. Have a chat with your florist about evoking a fresh, spring time feel in your bouquets and boutonnieres – they’ll know the perfect seasonal flowers to use. If you can stretch your flower budget a little, put some extra flowers on tables and in your wedding ceremony venue, it will really enhance the feeling of the outside being brought in and the growth of new spring buds. Wedding favours are the perfect opportunity to give your guests something to remember your day by. Use the spring season to your advantage and include some flower seeds or miniature chocolate eggs. Let your imagination run riot; miniature

Dress your Bridesmaid beauties in the same spring tones or variations of a shade to create a gorgeous gradient effect. You could also use different floral prints for your bridesmaids or complementary shades – as long as they don’t upstage the bride of course! Don’t think it’s just the girls who get all the springcoloured fun either; more daring Grooms and Groomsmen can also choose to move away from the traditional black suit and wear something with a little more colour or, for a more conservative look, opt for pastel, patterned or bright ties/ cravats.

baskets, flower petal lollipops, tiny pots of jam or honey – it’s entirely up to you. If your wedding day is closer to Easter and you have any children attending your reception, keep them occupied with a little Easter egg hunt around the venue or put some Easter themed colouring-in activity packs on the kids table – they and their parents will love you for it.

A few more tips: • If you’re opting for a traditional church wedding remember to check with the Vicar that your ceremony doesn’t clash with any ceremonies or bank holidays. On the plus side, there are always more booking opportunities in spring. • If you’re having an outdoor ceremony or reception, prepare for those April showers and invest in some bright wellies or waterproof boots. Don’t let those pesky squalls ruin your enjoyment. By personalising your spring wedding with little touches like this your big day will speak volumes about you as a couple; more importantly your wedding will be full of the things you and your partner love, what could be better than that? Have fun with a spring wedding and coordinate the smaller things to achieve a finished look. Really play up to the fresh, spring feeling and whether you go for pastels or prints, daisies or daffodils we wish you a wonderful wedding day.

So, by now you should have realised you have some difficult decisions ahead of you. La Belle is here to help tackle your upcoming obstacles when planning your special day.

Wedding Worries part 1 Weather

36

www.labellemag.com

You hear it all the time, planning a wedding is one of the most stressful things you can do. To anyone just starting out with their wedding plans, the thought of organising what is frequently referred to as “the biggest day of your life” is enough to bring on the nervous twitching. Even the most laid-back brides and grooms can fall victim to wedding anxiety; you casually booked your venue with so much time to spare. Suddenly, it’s two months before the big day; one of you is in the foetal position on the sofa, while the other furiously scrutinizes tablecloth swatches in ten different shades of cream. There are always going to be a few hiccups, but, with a little careful planning you can take some of the pressure off and reach your wedding day with your nerves intact. This series of articles tackles the top wedding worries head on and what you can do about them. The weather is one of the most anguish inducing elements of wedding planning, particularly if you want an outdoor reception or ceremony. Unfortunately, no amount of wishing can grant us the ability to

www.labellemag.com

manipulate the weather. On one of the few days when it matters the most, you’re placing a lot of expectation in the hands of the elements. You can always check the forecast, but that can be a little unreliable – we’re looking at you, Michael Fish. It’s mostly luck of the draw but you can put a few plans in place to allow for the weather. Outdoor venues can be the perfect place for a ceremony, reception or both - beautiful views, unlimited space and freedom to decorate as you please. However, unless you’re a very lucky couple and you’re marrying in a mid- July heat wave, it’s quite likely that you might get a few showers. Even June to August brides aren’t completely safe; these days you could get a cold or rain-soaked wedding day at any time of the year. A little shower is manageable but a torrential, persistent downpour tends to dampen (sorry) the atmosphere a bit. This is certainly not something that should put you off, but, you will have to pay more attention to the weather than most brides and groomsto-be and plan to expect rain just to be safe.

37

Once you and your guests are safely indoors you can boogie the night away

Photography

Rosie Parsons Photography

For any outdoor ceremony, unless there’s a barn available, a marquee or tent is going to be essential whatever the weather. When you picture a marquee a certain image might spring to mind: damp, flappy tarpaulins and shabby, uneven flooring creating a rather stark, uninviting space – in short, more C.I.D than “I do”. In reality, most modern marquees are weatherproof, 38

warm and appealing, with lots of room for customisation from the floor to the ceiling and everything in between. In fact, they provide you with more of a blank canvas than most brick and mortar venues can. Most outdoor sites are regulated and will have been used by other wedding organizers. Check if marquees have been used there in the past before you contact any marquee or tent hirers. www.labellemag.com

Photography

Liberty Pearl Photography

If you Are using any untested ground, such as a hired field, ask yourself the following: Is the area you’ve chosen prone to very strong winds or frequent rain? Will it be inaccessible for guests/caterers etc.? Will it very quickly become a mud bath? If you answered yes to any of those questions you may need to rethink your plans and move the party to an indoor venue.

When you’re sure that your site is marquee-safe and you’ve done the fun bit and planned out your yurt/ tent/ marquee’s dimensions and decorations with your chosen vendor, keep the following tips in mind for your day: • Mud and mucky surface water are the arch nemeses of shiny shoes and gorgeous gowns. Consider taking a more practical pair of shoes for any outdoor photography or walking you may be doing; you may even want to invest in a pair of wedding wellies you can easily slip on and off. • Another often forgotten point is access to washroom facilities. Don’t forget to hire a couple portable toilets if you’re a way out from civilisation; no bride wants to be dashing off to the hedgerow before her first dance! • If you’re wearing a floor length gown and have a little way to walk to the marquee, ask your bridal party to help hold your dress out of the mud - particularly if you’ve chosen a long train. If you’re planning on being outside for more than a few minutes it might be wiser to compromise on your dress design and choose a slightly higher hemline if your heart is set on an outdoor wedding. • Avoid umbrellas on wet and windy days; when they’re not busy turning themselves inside out for their own amusement, they’re failing to shelter you from that wonderful, sideways rain we’re all familiar with. Try to opt for a waterproof cape with a wide hood instead, it will protect your hair and makeup and keep you reasonably dry while you dash to your venue. www.labellemag.com

• If you’re blessed with sunshine on your big day you might want to invest in a parasol, the umbrella’s mild mannered cousin. It’ll stop you from burning and save you from squinting like Clint Eastwood in all your wedding photos. Make sure you and your guests have access to a glass of water when they need it too, hydration in high temperatures is crucial. Indoor venues are a little less stressful in comparison when it comes to the weather but there’s still plenty to have you fretting. Once you and your guests are safely indoors you can boogie the night away but do consider your entrance and exit. As with any outdoor venue, look at where your transport will be dropping you and how far that is from the front door. Consider some flat shoes if you’re planning on walking on any uneven surfaces (cobblestones, gravel or sand etc.) and you can keep them for dancing in later. Indoor brides may need the wellies too if there’s a waterlogged drive to negotiate or a quaint village path to traverse; puddles are not your friend. As with any element of wedding planning, what might seem very daunting becomes a little easier with preparations like these. A lot of effort in the early stages will give you a nearly worry-free wedding day later on. No matter what the weather does you’ll be satisfied knowing there’s a plan in place for nearly every eventuality (pending flash floods, blizzards or thunderstorms – I’m afraid we can’t help you much there!) 39

While some couples dream of a traditional wedding here in the UK, there are some who dream of escaping to an exciting overseas destination.

Getting married abroad can be as simple or as extravagant as you choose, from a drive through wedding in Las Vegas, saying your vows at the iconic Sydney Opera House or a deserted beach front location, the choice is yours. There are certain legal requirements required, depending on the country chosen but we are able to give advice concerning all the legalities such as documentation required, length of stay needed etc. Once you have decided on your destination we can go ahead and request your preferred wedding 42

date and time, it’s a good idea to be as flexible as possible with these requests as some resorts may only perform one ceremony each day. Ceremonies later in the day are most popular, as depending on your location you may be able to get some nice sunset pictures and it flows fairly well into the evening. Personally, I would try and book your wedding for as late in the holiday as possible, that not only gives you more time to refine your requirements with the wedding co-ordinator but all of you should look much healthier in the wedding photos. www.labellemag.com

Once you have your wedding confirmed you can pre book wedding extras such as flowers, photographers and special meals. Whatever you chose to do, once you arrive in resort a meeting will be set up with your wedding co-ordinator where you can discuss this in more detail and make any final adjustments. If you have any unusual requests you may be able to contact your wedding co-ordinator in advance via e mail, this can be especially useful if you are taking lots of family and friends and would like to arrange a reception. If you don’t fancy a hotel, many cruise companies will now allow you to marry on board, some even have a webcam where friends and family who can’t be with you want watch the ceremony live. At present civil partnerships are only available in the USA and Canada but this is likely to change over the coming years, in the meantime many countries, especially Thailand will offer blessing s to same sex couples married at home.

www.labellemag.com

Renewal of vows is also becoming increasingly popular, again some hotels will offer the ceremony free of charge, this is a great idea for special Wedding Anniversary celebrations. Your wedding day whether in the UK or abroad is one of the most important occasions in your lives, you will therefore need to spend a lot of time and effort in getting everything as you want it. So, whether you’re looking to get married abroad or booking your honeymoon look no further than Peter Goord Travel. We have experienced and knowledgeable staff that can help you at every stage of the booking process, offering you a real choice of holidays that only an Independent Travel Agent can. We all know that the ladies get most of the attention on the day of your wedding, but right now, this is for the men.

Keeping a cool head on the big day is hard enough as it is, don’t let the little things that can be easily avoided cause you stress. No matter what your style may be, looking and feeling fresh is essential for your comfort and confidence. On your wedding day you want to feel like ‘The Man’, these tips should help you feel fresh and on top form. Skin care can be a taboo subject for some guys, so this section covers the basics! Firstly moisturising is great for your skin. If you aren’t already, start moisturising your face about two to three weeks before the wedding, this will give you time to make sure you’re using the right product for your skin, get your fiancée to pick up a selection if you’re “too busy” to go personally. This way you won’t have any funny reactions and it ensures a healthier appearance. Using talcum powder ‘downstairs’ and on your feet seems outdated but it’s one of the best ways to make sure your comfortable in that suit, we’ve all been there, you need to make some adjustments but there’s no subtle way to do it, put it this way, you don’t want to get caught reshuffling the deck by your in laws, talc keeps you dry enough to avoid these situations. We’ve got a lot of hand shaking to do on the big day so keep a hanky in your pocket! Clutch it every once in a while to make sure your hand is dry and not clammy, it can be a nerve-wracking experience saying hello to all those new relatives and friends, the hanky should keep moisture at bay. Make sure to cut your nails two days before the ceremony, it gives them a chance to grow back and look natural. Start using a good quality mens hand lotion three weeks before the day, your partner will thank you for it later. www.labellemag.com

MAN TIP: After a good wash, towel dry your face but don’t be rough, remember just because we rock it doesn’t mean we’re made of stone. Pat your face dry so that your skin can retain some of it’s natural moisture, then apply.

Facial hair is popular nowadays, but if you like the clean look it’s important to shave the night before your big day. The last thing you need is a rash under your collar. When you eventually undo that top button to dance like a fool, everyone’s going to see an irritated neck....not cool. Open pours from a fresh shave are more likely to irritate if you cover them with a clean collar, wet shaving the night before helps avoid this, over night your skin will heal and become smooth. Shave in the shower or bath, your skin will be softer from the heat and this will give a smoother shave. In the morning just give it a once over with a dry shaver (if needed) and be sure to moisturise with a non alcohol based cream. For those who rock a bit of stubble or even the beard of a spartan, all you need to do is make sure you’ve styled and tidied your look! You probably know your own routine, if you’re happy with it, stick with it. If you think there’s room for improvement but can’t bring yourself to lift up the clippers, make sure you take a trip to the barbers for a tidy up. MAN TIP: Your fiancée probably has a small mirror for eyebrow plucking, take this with you when you shave in the bath or shower. Kill two birds with one stone and take the pluckers in as well, your skin will be softer and plucking will be less painful.

47

Ok eye brows and hair. You may have pretty good eyebrows already, if so, we envy you! Then again, you may have eyebrows so annoyingly massive that some grooming is required. The mono brow has never been a good look, even if it’s a faint few strands. We’re not suggesting hot wax and strips for those strays, just get some pluckers on those little…….hairs! Don’t go too crazy mind you, stop just before the bulk eye brow hair begins, that way they’ll still look natural. Get the best man to do it if you don’t feel brave enough, it’s probably not the worst pain he’ll ever inflicted upon you! As for hair, we all know the drill, it’s at it’s best around a week after the cut, by this time we’ve got our own unique style down, we know how to shape and control our look and most importantly we’re confident, so don’t leave it too late in the day to get a trim. Don’t go heavy with products, again stick to what you know, changing a product can surprise your scalp into drying out, this can cause flakes which you don’t want on your suit. The only thing we would suggest is a strong hold hair spray, it should help control you’re style for most of the day.......well, at least for the photos. MAN TIP: Make sure you style your hair as soon as possible, this way there’s no unnecessary fiddling when things get serious later on.

Smelling good is so important, apply aftershave behind the ears, on both wrists and a small amount to the adams apple. It may not seem a lot but trust us it will give off an appreciated level of scent. If you put too much on, you can easily offend the senses of those around you, remember that person in that night club that one time that wreaked of the most hideous perfume! We love our aftershaves, but they are supposed to be subtle, not in your face or obvious. Make sure you’re happy with your antiperspirant, take it for a test run as well! I know it sounds silly but grab the shirt you’re wearing for the wedding, don a blazer and go out for a few drinks with you’re mates. Put it to the test, see if it keeps you dry and comfortable, if not try another one. You want to be able to move freely all day, not walk around like a penguin hiding the embarrassing salami stains. MAN TIP: If you do have armpit sweat problems, take a spare shirt, it’s easy as that, if the bride’s allowed to change half way through the night, why not you too! You’re wedding day is one of the most nerve wracking days you’ll ever endure, keep all this in mind and it should go a little smoother.

It’s a given that your bridesmaids will be all different heights and dress sizes. Finding that perfect dress to suit all of them will be mission impossible right? La Belle can help, with some great ideas to keep all your bridesmaids happy! You’ve found your man, but you still need your girls. The shoulders to cry on if the catering company falls through, or the perfect venue is fully booked. The ones you rely on when sticking those last fiddly diamantes onto invitations, even if it is 1am. The girls who will still ‘ooh and aww’ as you try on your eighteenth fishtail gown because it’s “just not the one”. And the hens that you lean on after a great night out, even if it was them who bought you that one tequila too many. After all that hard work, don’t they deserve a fabulous dress! It’s a known fact that finding a bridesmaid dress to suit all your lovely ladies can be rather demanding. So don’t put yourselves through the stresses of squeezing your sister’s busty chest into a halter-neck, or having your best friend’s delicate frame drown in masses of material! What will look 56

much more stunning is a perfectly colour coordinated selection of individual dresses, each tailored to flatter your bridesmaids’ shapes and sizes. As most fashion stores take their trends straight from the catwalk, an all day trip to the high street will result in the purchase of dresses all similarly styled and coloured. The slight variations will merely add character and by keeping the bouquets the same you can create a more harmonious look. Also, try to keep the dress lengths and hairstyles similar to avoid bridesmaids being mistaken for regular guests! If you’re one of the lucky brides whose bridesmaids are all similarly sized, many dress companies can offer a cleverly crafted material that can be tied in various styles to create a stunning, but consistent, array of dresses. Or, a fun twist on buying the same dress is to pick it in all different shades of the same colour. If you’re more adventurous, you could dress them in all different colours (and the ushers in various shirts too)! Get them lined up in your photographs to create a rainbow effect. Just be careful to get every colour in the same tone, either pastel shades or bright and vibrant. If you want a more subtle effect chose a simple, plain dress with an array of different coloured shoes complimented with corresponding bouquets. www.labellemag.com

To show your appreciation to your number one girls, you could give them a gift of cute matching purses. Inside those purses will be everything they need for the day from a pocket-sized schedule, to the perfect coloured lipstick to match their dress! A more traditional idea could be to give them matching corsages after the ceremony so they don’t have to carry their bouquets around as they party into the night. A little bit of individuality is great, so if you’re on a tight budget, ask the girls to buy those finishing touches: jewellery, shoes and hair accessories. This will highlight www.labellemag.com

the individual characteristics that you love about each girl. Just give them some brief guidelines to make sure it matches your overall styling. Unfortunately the stresses of wedding planning can mean that many brides will fall into the trap of being too controlling. Although it’s your big day, remember how much these girls have done for you! It is all about finding the right balance between getting the styling you desire and making sure that everyone is comfortable. Keep them happy and you’re guaranteed to have big smiles all day long! 57
