Something about winter lends itself to grandeur; maybe it’s the pyrotechnics of November, the behemoth that is the Christmas season or the ringing in of the New Year, tales of snow queens and Narnia – not to mention the colours; rich golds, warm reds and sparkling silvers. As a winter bride you can take as much advantage of this as you want and if you’d prefer a hint of winter about you, where better to start than with your dress.
There’s no rule that says a bride’s dress must reflect the season she’s marrying in (that would be odd to say the least) but certain materials lend themselves to winter and add to your seasonally sophisticated style. A little sprinkle of sparkle on your gown will make you glitter like winter frost. This can be achieved any number of ways depending how much of a thing you have for bling; think of a few diamantes or sequins dotted over your gown or on your veil or a pair of glittery shoes. If your venue has any down lighting you’ll find your sparkles will twinkle perfectly. Pearls are also a flawless, wintery touch; either around your neck or sewn to your gown, they are a truly timeless accessory. If you’re not adverse to a few embellishments you’ll find a variety of beautiful wedding dresses with pearls sewn in. It’s an ideal way to create some intricate detail on a dress without seeming overdone. Tulle has a gorgeous, fairy tale feel to it and fits perfectly with a winter wedding. If you’re not the princess type, consider a sophisticated fishtail gown for a slice of crisp, old Hollywood glamour. In fact, lucky winter brides will find almost any style of dress will work well in this season. However, it’s worth considering the lower temperatures and preparing for the chill with some demure accessories. Invest in a faux fur shrug or scarf to keep yourself cosy in the cold. This is particularly important if you’ve chosen a church wedding – beautiful as they are, they usually aren’t the warmest of places! Faux fur is the perfect
www.labellemag.com
way to stay toasty, effortlessly vintage and still look like a bride without breaking out the mittens and scarves. If you don’t want the fuss of accessories have a look at some beautiful long sleeve dresses – they’ll keep you a little warmer as well as being on trend and gorgeous too. A high collar is also a sophisticated touch, reminiscent of Grace Kelly’s gorgeous gown, and great at keeping the chill out. If your wedding day is a little nearer to Christmas you could incorporate a little festive feeling to your gown. A touch of red, gold or green will pay tribute to the season of good tidings in style. Just don’t go for all three or your guests will be humming Karma Chameleon under their breath! Consider a subtle, gold sash around your waist or a pair of emerald green shoes. Similarly, if you’ve opted for a New Year wedding think about silvers and golds; if you’re going to wed on the biggest party days of the year why not take advantage of it in style? Finally, for those brides aiming for the non-traditional approach you can make the bold move of wearing a different colour gown down the aisle. Nothing could be more festive than saying your vows in a vermilion gown. With the release of The Great Gatsby earlier this year there has been a huge insurgence of interest in all things art deco and 1920’s; good news for any magpie bride with her heart set on a gown a little more glitzy and unusual. Look out for green, silver, gold and even black wedding gowns with an air of Gatsby about them.

The most popular time of year for weddings is between May and August as many people envision getting married on a warm, sunny day with blue skies and no rain. In reality, with the unpredictability of UK weather, you could find yourself dealing with the added stress of weather watching in the run up to your wedding day. 18
www.labellemag.com
The joy of a winter wedding is that the weather becomes less of a factor, as you can assume that at very least it will be cold, and so plan your day with the assumption that you and your guests will need to be warm and dry. Consider as well, that a winter wedding can substantially reduce the cost of your wedding day. Most wedding venues consider October to March to be their off-peak times, and the cost of booking them often reduces substantially as the competition for bookings drops. Hotels that were once stately homes make excellent winter wedding venues with their open fires, big rugs and plush decor, as you don’t have to worry about cold guests or a lack of photo opportunities if the weather outside turns unpleasant. It also means that guests don’t have to worry about travelling home at night through bad weather, as they can choose to stay at the hotel and take journeys home the next day. Alternatives are to look at hiring a large rustic house or cottage for the reception if you have a smaller guest count, and want something a bit different from the classic sit down meal and disco. Keep it more casual with plenty of rooms available for people to lounge in, and consider a more informal hot buffet to save having to cram everyone into one room to dine. Cards, board
games and party games can work well to keep guests entertained. Provide mulled wine or hot chocolate as alternatives to the usual Bucks Fizz or champagne for an added twist. Marquees can work for winter weddings, but generally the permanent or semi-permanent ones are the best, as these will likely have the best heating and will be able to withstand any bad weather. Make sure that you get the venue to demonstrate the effectiveness of the heating to you before you book, and consider the bathroom facilities as well. You don’t want guests have to run across a soggy, muddy field in the dark whilst it’s freezing cold and raining, just to use the toilet. Of course, perhaps you have always dreamed of a winter wonderland on your wedding day, envisioning snowflakes, icy blues and crisp whites, or a warming festive theme with rich burgundy and gold, but don’t forget that you don’t have to go with a typical wintery theme just because you’re getting married during the colder months. Violets, teals and cobalt blue make excellent alternatives to ice blue, and don’t forget that you could substitute snowflakes for stars or birds. Burgundy is an excellent warming colour for a wintery wedding, but you could consider a bright scarlet instead, or stick with the deep colours but go with aubergine, sapphire or emerald green for a striking difference.
Here are just a few extra things to bear in mind when planning a winter wedding:
• Getting married in a church? A lot of older church buildings don’t have very good heating systems, so you could consider providing a basket of cute rolled up blankets for people to help themselves to.
• Don’t forget that the days are shorter in winter, so plan the timings of the day accordingly and make the most of the dark evenings with candles, fairy lights and lanterns.
• Keep in mind that elderly relatives can get quite worried about travelling and/walking around in icy weather, so be prepared for them to decline an invitation if they don’t want to risk a fall.
• It will almost definitely be colder than a spring or summer wedding, so ensure that you consider that when picking your bridal outfit and those of your attendants. Add pashminas, shrugs or boleros to keep everyone toasty.
• Ensure that you have wedding insurance if you’re getting married in the winter. If the worst happens and a sudden storm or blizzard prevents you’re wedding from going ahead as planned, at least you’ll not end up out of pocket.

True Colours Choosing the colour scheme for your wedding is the perfect task to get your wedding planning rolling. Ideally, you want to do this after you’ve chosen your venue and date and before you start choosing any details (like invitations, favours or cakes) so you can incorporate your colour into these. With a little care and some La Belle advice you’ll have your wedding colours sorted in no time.
www.labellemag.com
23
Photography Rosie Parsons
When you start picking those all-important hues, consider your venue and what might work best. Take note of any distinctly patterned or coloured soft furnishings, carpets and curtains in your function and ceremony rooms and work with them. You might be considering that striped ivy green sash for your chairs but next to the dark red curtains in the dining room it might look a little too much like Santa’s grotto (unless that’s the look you’re going for!). Don’t let this dictate your entire theme though; it’s just something to bear in mind. One solid colour throughout your venue is going to look a little intense. Imagine a purple table with purple chairs, purple tablecloth and purple cutlery; granted it’s an extreme example but nothing stands out with this setup. Lots of one colour will overwhelm the eye and swamps all your carefully planned details. Make it 24
easier for yourself, just dress the invites, flowers, cake, favours and clothing in hints of your colour scheme; then take a step back and add more if needs be. If you’re feeling a little braver, using two or three colours is your best option. Choose varying shades of the same colour or colours that complement each other. The ratio of colour is entirely up to you: whether it’s 60% yellow and 40% grey or 30% teal and 70% ocean blue but try to make it unequal to add variation. Be warned though, any more than three colours and you risk looking like you let a toddler loose on the decor with the paint box! With a thousand colour combinations to consider you should go with colours you love over what’s in fashion. But, if you’re a bit stumped we’ve got a little list of common colours and what they suggest. www.labellemag.com
Photography Rosie Parsons
The main colours Red is the colour of romance and a natural choice for a wedding if you want to inject warmth and passion into your special day. But, you should avoid the combination of white and red, as it’s known to bring bad luck and believed to be symbolic of blood and bandages (yuck!). Orange is a colour of many meanings - in the summer it might remind you of fresh oranges and Asiatic Lillies. In autumn, it means fallen leaves, pumpkins and roaring wood fires. In fact, orange is a perfect example of how seasons can affect your colour scheme and its effect. For a more laid-back orange, opt for peachy shades and combine them with other pastel tones. Yellow is the colour of summer, sunshine and optimism; a zing of yellow in your colour scheme will spread a happy, welcoming atmosphere. Alternatively, a pastel yellow will bring calm and cheer. Green, the colour of nature and rebirth, is suitable for a wedding in any season. In emerald it becomes a mysterious, wintery colour full of class and art deco sophistication - use apple green for a fresh summery feel.
www.labellemag.com
Blue - one of the most tranquil shades and comes in an ocean of hues; from sky to cornflower. Choose navy for a refined, understated look and a lighter shade for a more whimsical, breezy feel. Purple - This shade has always had strong, royal associations. It’s perfect for an opulent winter wedding. Or, choose lilac for a cooling, springtime colour. Pink - A colour of femininity and nurturing, pink is a perfect spring or summer shade. White - a symbol of purity and the ultimate blank canvas. White can look beautiful paired with any other shade in any season, so get creative! Don’t forget variations of white; champagne, ivory and cream all look beautiful on their own or paired with richer shades. Brown - the colour of earth and chocolate! Blend a rustic brown with other colours to create a sophisticated colour scheme. Brown also works wonders for an autumnal theme mixed with orange, red and aubergine.
25
Photography Rosie Parsons
Up for a challenge? These shades can be stunning if handled delicately: Silver - Like any metallic, silver is one to be treated with care. In small, muted amounts it seems elegant and chic. Too much of it and your wedding might look like any number of unflattering objects; baked potatoes, loft insulation or 70’s sci-fi shows. Gold - Another bold colour to opt for - grand and flamboyant. Hints of gold can look beautiful, warm and opulent; picture stripes of gold on napkins and accents woven into chair covers. Dress your bridesmaids in gold lame or get yourself some gold floor runners and you could be sliding into the arena of trashy. Black - A striking shade and definitely one to be used with caution. A black theme can look classy, glamorous and modern and acts as a perfect neutral to almost any other shade. It can also look like the Addams Family Wedding; build slowly from hints of black to avoid a sombre tone. Your wedding colours set the tone for the day; they’ll make a big impact on your guest’s first impressions and can be a real mood changer. Keep your venue and time of the year in mind and use our little shade guide to get colour confident.

All I want for Christmas Is the perfect winter wedding
T
he time is upon us where brides tuck away their wedding scrapbooks and fill their time with late-night Christmas shops, last-minute turkey preparations and weary eyed present wrapping. And with all those seasonal stresses you may think it crazy to have a wedding in Winter too! But don’t let those christmas concerns put you off hosting your special day in the most enchanting season of them all.
THE BRIDAL GOWN
Here at La Belle, we want to grant you a Christmas wish. We’re not proposing garish red and green paper chains or the replacement of wedding favours with cheap Christmas cracker toys. What we’re unveiling is the possibility of an elegant, fashionable and extremely romantic affair. The Christmas party that everybody will have been anticipating and your very own white wedding.
Now it’s time to have some fun. There are some great ways to make your bridesmaids look wintery without turning them into Christmas elves. Pairing a beautiful evening gown with some fluffy ugg boots or a faux fur muff will make for some excellent photographs! Scatterings of sparkles throughout their hair and a cute, frosted nail paint add winter glamour.
www.labellemag.com
Winter wedding gowns are by far the most intricate, beautiful and magical of all the dresses. Lace sleeves, fur wraps and glittering trains are just some of the fabulous additions that can transform you into a stunning snow queen. Be careful to keep these touches subtle, especially with the fur (nobody wants to look like Lady Gaga on their wedding day)!
THE BRIDESMAIDS
31
A red lip will bring some festive cheer, without overdoing the christmas theme.
Photography Samantha Maber
Ribbon around the waistline of your dress adds a festive twist. Why not match the colour to your bridesmaids dresses?
FLOWERS
White flowers will always look Christmassy, especially a subtle bouquet made up of Babies Breath (Alstomeria). By arranging your flowers into perfectly rounded shapes and hanging them above your tables, you can give the magical illusion of falling balls of snow. For added colour you could pick festive red roses or frosted blue orchids.
THE COLOUR SCHEME
This is the most challenging element of planning your Christmas wedding. Picking rich, traditional reds and greens can look stunning when used minimally, but be careful, it can start to ooze Christmas market when you should be aiming for Winter Wonderland. A fashionable alternative could be a delicate pastel shade, such as subtle mint or icy blue. If pastel isn’t your thing, consider matching gold with a royal purple or deep burgundy: much more imaginative choices that are still festive.
DECORATIONS
You will want your venue to be clad in the most delicate, wintery décor - glistening baubles, frosted flowers and soaring above you a perfectly decorated fir tree. As for personal touches you could keep with traditional holly, ivy and pinecones 32
- which can look majestic when arranged in wreaths or wrapped around candles. You could opt for a more modern twist with frosted twigs, strings of sparkling crystals, dainty fairy lights and a sprinkle of artificial snow.
VENUE
It’s a given that churches look beautiful in the snow and if you’re on a budget (as most of us are) then they come ready decorated for Christmas. For the reception venue, it’s your chance to get creative. You want an elegant building as a blank canvas for all that chirstmassy décor. Yes, that means no jazzy wallpapers or gaudy carpets! And because your wedding is not in peak season, you will be able to afford much more for much less. Follow these simple tips and we can guarantee that on your wedding day you will enter a stunning Narnia… not Santa’s grotto! www.labellemag.com

Don’t forget to think about how formal your wedding is and tailor your invite to it. If you’re having a laid back affair by the beach you might want to stay away from the gilt edged, calligraphy adorned invite and opt for something a little more casual. You’re not tied down to shape either; folded sheets are traditional but why not go for a flower shape or circular invite? Photography Samantha Maber
There’s a lot to be said for making your own invites, but, the thought of individually gluing, sticking and folding up to one hundred and fifty of them is enough to have most of us, mere mortals, breaking out in a cold sweat. The DIY approach doesn’t have to be too labour intensive; many hobby stores offer stamps, peel and stick foiling, ribbons and paper punchers. Simple additions like this turn a homemade invite into a polished masterpiece. Don’t worry if you make mistakes either, people will appreciate the effort you’ve made regardless. Making the crafty elements easier for yourself isn’t cheating and you still have the satisfaction of knowing your invites were handmade without you having a mini breakdown. If you’d rather stay as far away from DIY as you can, some invitation makers offer a bespoke service; which lets you create your ultimate invite with their creative expertise and zero fuss. 38

www.labellemag.com
Even when it comes to table plans, stationery is your friend. This is dependent on situation; if you have a small party of very close friends and family, table plans won’t cause you too much grief. But, if you have a large extended family, or maybe a few family feuds, table settings can turn into U.N. negotiations. In this digital age, there a huge variety of online table planning tools but some people work better with a physical plan in front of them. You can even use one at your wedding venue so your guests can tell where they’re seated. One idea would be to have each guest on Velcro or sticky strips on a plan of your dining area. This way you can merrily swap them about until you’re completely happy, without wasting reams of paper. Plus, having a pretty paper table planner softens the blow of spending hours playing musical chairs with your relatives. Finally, there’s place setting to consider: table numbers, favour labels etc. Again, this might seem daunting but it can be a lot of fun. With your invites sorted and your beautiful table plan almost finalised you should have a clear idea of the style and look you need to use on the finishing touches and unify your overall wedding theme. Whatever your plans for your big day, knowing you’ve got all the little details covered lifts a lot of the pressure from you and lets you enjoy the experience. It can bring a wedding together, impress your guests and put the cherry on top of the whole event. If you feel you’ve got too much on your plate, reign it back a little and remember these three golden rules; create wedding stationery that tells people what they need to know, makes you happy and looks amazing!

MAKE IT THE HOLIDAY OF A LIFETIME
THE HONEYMOON Planning your wedding day is a very exciting time but can also be stressful as you try to keep all your family and friends happy and involved. However, when it comes to your Honeymoon, it is all about the two of you and what you want, so choosing the right holiday is vital. Firstly, you need to consider what you want to do while you’re away. Are you looking for ‘Chill’ or ‘Thrill’ or maybe a combination of both. It’s a good idea to have a chat about this before deciding where to go, (this is especially important if the groom is booking a surprise honeymoon!) Two centre holidays are becoming increasingly popular for honeymoon couples and can be the ideal solution if you can’t decide on what you would like to do. By opting for a two centre holiday you can enjoy the cultural aspects of a destination followed by a relaxing tropical beach break. I feel your Honeymoon should be a time away that you will always remember and therefore deciding on a more adventurous itinerary, rather than just beach, is now becoming much more popular. For some this could be your last long haul holiday before the arrival of children so choose a destination further afield that might not be as affordable, or as child friendly, as your future holidays might have to be. As these type of holidays are often based on scheduled flights you have the flexibility of selecting as many nights in each destination as you like. Flights are generally on sale eleven months in advance and we would advise you to book early to qualify for the best early booking and honeymoon offers. Popular two centre combinations are: Sri Lanka & The Maldives - USA & Hawaii or Caribbean - Bangkok and Thai Beach If you’re open to suggestions why not give us your ‘wish’ list and allow us to come up with some ideas to suit you. 42
Things to consider: Where: Are you looking to travel long haul or would you like to stay closer to home? Europe offers huge diversity and can provide something for everyone. However, if this is a trip of a lifetime maybe you would rather travel further afield and really spoil yourselves. Weather: Don’t be put off by our summer not being high season for many exotic destinations, this can still be a great time to travel, you will often pick up some fantastic offers too, such as free nights and room upgrades. Type of Accommodation: Are you looking for a large resort with lots of facilities or a small boutique type property? Many destinations offer ‘Adult only’ properties which can be particularly important if you are travelling during school holidays. Budget: Would you prefer an all inclusive holiday with all your food and drink already paid for or would you prefer to eat out and be more independent. Our Honeymoon scheme is a great way to help towards the cost of your holiday. It allows your guests to call into our office or telephone and purchase a voucher for any amount, this is then credited towards the cost of your honeymoon. This is a great way of avoiding unwanted gifts and can also give you the opportunity to have the holiday of your dreams. So, whatever your dream honeymoon is, we look forward to making it a reality.

YOUR FOREVER FLOWERS... 46
www.labellemag.com
Photography Samantha Maber
No one can deny that real flowers will look absolutely stunning on your big day. But what about those brides who’d prefer to skip the genuine article? Maybe you have hay fever and you don’t want to be sniffling up the aisle, perhaps you want a more permanent memento of your day, or you’re just not a traditional kind of gal. Enter the alternative wedding bouquet!
More and more brides are opting to inject a little personality into their bouquets and try something a bit ‘off-the-wall’. If you’ve made the decision to give natural flowers a miss then look no further than these beautiful alternatives: Brooch bouquets are an incredible statement, ideal for a magpie bride, and have grown in popularity in the last few years. Brooch bouquet makers can usually create a bouquet for you from their own materials or you can send your precious heirlooms to them to be included. Allow a few months for a professional to create a brooch bouquet for you and do think very carefully before trying to make one yourself. It’s one of those projects that are made to look beautifully simple by the professionals, in reality, it’s quite an art form and not easily mastered. Bear in mind that the average brooch bouquet contains somewhere in the region of forty to sixty www.labellemag.com
brooches, depending on their size. If you don’t have forty brooches of your own then many bouquet makers will be happy to take what you have and incorporate it into a bouquet that uses their materials too. If you have your heart set on using all of your own brooches why not throw a brooch shower. Instead of your bridal shower invite all your guests to bring a brooch for you to include in your bouquet and give it a personal touch. When looking at brooch bouquets, as beautiful as they are, try to consider your budget. They are one of the most expensive alternative bouquets, costing anywhere from £100 to £300. Consider the weight too; all that bling will be surprisingly heavy (think two bags of sugar in your hand!). It might be a good idea to place it on a stand during the ceremony or get your lovely bridal party to hold it for you. Finally, remember if you want to toss a bouquet after your ceremony that you’ll want a florist to create a dummy bouquet for you so you don’t give your guests a concussion. 47
Boquet Flourish
Paper bouquets have a lot of scope for thoughtful touches. A musical bride and groom might include sheet music to their favourite love song in the bride’s paper bouquet. Or, perhaps, love poems folded into paper roses for the romantics. There are some incredibly talented artists out there who can form almost any flower shape out of the paper of your choice. There are several different varieties including flowers created from spirals of paper or concertinaed into circles. Unlike the complex brooch bouquet, if you’re a crafty bride who isn’t afraid of a little challenge, you could even try making your own paper bouquets. There are lots of tutorials and helpful tips online to help you through. The best part is there’s no fuss over which flowers are in season or how long they’ll last; if you take care of your paper bouquet your grandchildren will be admiring it years from now. 48
Other options to consider include: Wire bouquets - best for an ultra modern ceremony with minimalist touches and an uncluttered venue. A little word to the wise though; avoid waving your wire bouquet too much if you’re marrying in stormy weather; unless you want a dangerously electric atmosphere at your wedding! Button bouquets are a wonderful example of the quirky beauty of alternative bouquets. They’re unusual enough to be a real conversation starter but they also look incredibly pretty. Button bouquets are quite labour intensive so be prepared for a wallet intensive price tag. If you’re a super creative bride you could also try making your own - be prepared for lots of practise runs and leave plenty of time in case it doesn’t go as planned. www.labellemag.com

If you’re planning to wed in summer we have the perfect bouquet for you, Butterfly bouquets! These fluttering beauties are suspended on wire and when they’re wrapped in a bunch it almost looks like a swarm, hovering over your hands! These are a little more difficult to find and are usually made to order by hand. But, if you’re looking for a perfectly bohemian twist for your big day, a butterfly bouquet is hard to beat. You can also find bouquet makers who specialise in fabric. The benefit of this material is that it can be adapted for almost any style of wedding. Going for a bohemian theme? Try felt blooms - there’s something very home spun and carefree about little felt stitched blossoms. Opting for a more sophisticated day? Choose some satin flowers, beautifully threaded to resemble real www.labellemag.com
roses and oozing class. Even silk flowers - once deemed a little out-dated have been brought into the new century by alternative bouquet makers. In fact, some silk flowers are so lifelike you’d be forgiven for confusing them with the real thing. This list isn’t exhaustive of course. We haven’t even touched on cupcake, candy, beaded or feather bouquets! But we hope this article has got you feeling creative and inspired.
There has never been a greater time to let your personality shine through on your wedding day. So whether you choose paper or plastic, buttons or brooches, your individuality will shine through. 49

the look of love Jonathan & Kerri by Liberty Pearl Photography Jonathan and Kerri wanted a nautical themed wedding in their hometown of Plymouth. The couple both love the sea and used Plymouth’s wonderful coastline as a stunning and beautiful backdrop to their special day. A very traditional service was held at St John’s Church in Hooe; after which the wedding party made their way to Mount Batten marina where all embarked on a voyage around Plymouth Sound. The trip was fabulous, with the happy couple and their guests mingling on the top deck, enjoying the views over the sparkling water, drinking Pimms with the sun blazing down. Out of nowhere five planes gave the most spectacular synchronized air display; the ‘Aerostars’ did a show over Plymouth Sound, right above the boat. It was an amazing surprise for all; the planes arched and soared in the beautiful azure sky as everyone stood mesmerised and thrilled. The guests disembarked at Plymouth’s historic Barbican, where the bridal party strolled to The Hoe for a relaxed photo shoot alongside Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, stopping for ice creams on the way. In delight they bumped into street pastors on the walk back to the reception, where the couple received a second wedding blessing. The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club hosted speeches, toasts, cutting the cake, followed by enlivened Irish jigging. Definitely one of the quirkiest Plymouth weddings I have had the pleasure of shooting. A natural unstaged photo shoot was a great way to capture Kerri and Jonathan’s fun personalities and their complete happiness.
