1) MAKE SURE YOUR GOWN FITS It is extremely common for a bride’s weight to fluctuate during the months before the wedding. This is mainly caused by two factors – stress and pre-wedding dieting! Be sure you work with a dress-maker that is happy to see you on a regular basis for fittings and, if they’re necessary, alterations.

2) THE FABRIC IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE STYLE Do not always go for the dress that just looks good, quality of fabric is vital. Admittedly, you are only going to wear this dress (in public!) for one day but the better quality of the dress, the more sophisticated you will look. If in doubt, satin always looks beautiful and won’t irritate your skin like lace can.

3) MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SHAPE Unfortunately, we can’t all be size 8 hourglass girls, but no matter what shape you are, you WILL look stunning if you choose a dress that complements your body type.

THE BEST STYLE FOR YOUR BODY Hourglass girls: You lucky ladies can wear whatever dress takes your fancy! Your body shape was designed to wear a wedding dress and there are thousands of gorgeous styles for you to pick from. Avoid an empire line if you are fairly slim, as it will drown out your lovely figure. Pear-shaped ladies: Choose a dress that will show off your tiny waist and has lots of detail at the top - this will help to draw attention towards your face. Strapless dresses, or those with a low-cut scoop will emphasise your top half and draw attention away from the bottom area. Avoid high neck dresses at all costs – these will make your hips look bigger than they really are. Straight-up-and-down women: Choose a dress that accentuates either the hemline or the neck and shoulders – this will compliment your slim figure and give the illusion of a fuller chest and defined waist. Don’t be shy to try a shorter dress either, as you’ll be able to show off your slender legs and ankles. Top-heavy women: Wear a design that highlights the waist and skirt – this will draw the eye to the bottom half of your body and balance out your hips with your shoulders. V-necked dresses are very flattering on this body type. The most recommended styles are A-line or princess-cut dresses as they flatter the bust without over-emphasising it and balance out your figure – the key here is classy, not brassy; leave something to the groom’s imagination! Don’t forget if you’re getting married in wintertime or at an outdoor venue, you’re going to need something to cover your shoulders – goosebumps should be from excitement, not chill! If you don’t fancy the Kate Middleton long sleeved look, try a stylish shrug or jacket. Faux fur trim, sparkles or a detailed fastening give you that extra bit of glamour combined with the all-important practicality – try on a few and see what takes your fancy.

As always, if in doubt, go with your instinct. You will know it’s the perfect dress the moment you put it on – so go forth and shop! www.labellemag.com

Wedding flowers bring symbolic significance to ceremonies of all cultures and evoke a wide range of potent emotions. Their diversity is enormous and wonderful, their meanings uplifting and thought-provoking, their uses decorative and even medicinal, orchestrated only by the seasons. You are a unique personality and your flowers should reflect that, giving you joy for years to come www.labellemag.com

AND THERE WAS US THINKING ALL THEY DID WAS MATCH YOUR COLOUR SCHEME...

Flower Cafe

Your choice of flowers, as with anything on your wedding day, is totally individual – colours, sizes, shapes and placings are all up to you. But have you tried thinking beyond the garden and outside the box? In the first of a series of helpful articles, Master Florist Amanda Randell from Randell-Cox flowers gives us the low-down on what you could do with your petals, posies and pedestals, making sure that whatever you choose to say, you really do ‘say it with flowers’. Before you go and see your florist, create a mood board of everything about you – are you a chocoholic? Love your sparkles? Have a favourite texture or shape? Any hobbies? All of the little things you hold dear about you and your future spouse, abstract as you like, put them on there and take them to your florist; from this, they can suggest arrangements and ideas unique to you. Also consider when you are getting married as most flowers are especially beautiful at specific times of the year – if the flowers are in season, your florist can obtain them more easily too which will keep the costs as low as possible. Popular flowers in summertime include lilies, roses and delphiniums and for a full list of seasonal availability visit www.flowers.org.uk.

Once you have an idea of the colours and flowers you’d like, discuss the style of your bouquet, remember that the only limit is your imagination! Getting the bouquet right is key, as it compliments you, the bride, as you walk down the aisle, making it the centre of attention. Consider how it will look with your dress, the style of wedding (you don’t want a massive bouquet if you’re keeping things simple) and how comfortable it is to hold. Remember it’s tradition to throw it over your shoulder too, so try not to make it too heavy! Amanda Randell is a teacher and freelance florist whose passion is working alongside every individual to achieve their perfect wedding flowers. From ornate arrangements in venue decoration or simply scattering petals around the bridal suite, Amanda has invaluable experience in every aspect of wedding floristry, forever inspired by the couples with whom she works. 15

RAISE YOUR GLASSES

The first speaker clinks the glass with a shaking hand and a sweating brow, hoping that he doesn’t stumble over his words…you sit there calm and collected but wonder what embarrassing facts he may come out with and who he may offend… Public speaking is not everyone’s forte; in fact only 20 per cent of people in Britain feel comfortable doing it. Traditionally, the father of the bride, the groom and the best man have to address the guests (so get them to have a look at this to give them a confidence boost!) but nowadays more and more brides are taking to centre stage to make a speech. As with anything there are no rules, but have a look below for some good ideas on what your speakers could say and some handy tips to keep them calm. Firstly, be prepared. However confident you are at public speaking, don’t do your speech on a wing and a prayer as emotions are liable to creep out and jumble what you may have wanted to say. Even just jotting down a few bullet points will help you stay on track and get your point across.

Photography by Rosie Parsons

24

www.labellemag.com

Secondly, don’t feel you have to memorise it! As stated, bullet points can help but if you want to write everything on paper then you can be sure you will be saying what you had intended. Also practising the speech beforehand can help – that way you’ll know when to pause and look up from your script. Be sincere – if you’re not an extrovert who likes the limelight, don’t try and crack some dirty jokes just because you might get a laugh. No idea where to begin? H Stay true to your character and feelings and the look at th ave a ese lighthearted words will come naturally. WINTER WEDDINGS It’s the most valuable money saving tip we can offer you – book your wedding outside of peak season (April-September) and you will have yourself a cheaper deal. That said, winter weddings don’t have to be a cheaper option or have a lesser feel – there’s something magical about a winter wonderland that can make your wedding equally as special, if not more so, than a ceremony in summer. Read on and find out what could give the chillier climate a warmer atmosphere and we know you won’t be left out in the cold!

Bear in mind materials for both the décor and your clothing, beauty incorporated with warmth is essential. Small amounts of velvet and fur add a warm winter feeling, so when it comes to chair covers and drapes you may want to consider them, but also think about a shrug or jacket while wearing your dress. There are lots of options and even though strapless dresses are very much the fashion at present, don’t be afraid to try a gown with longer sleeves.

With winter months being darker, you’ll have fewer hours of daylight, so lots of little fairy lights and sparkles are key. Table centres, flower arrangements, doorways – there’s no limit to how many places you can decorate with bits of sparkle, and the lights will add a sense of warmth too.

Although, as always, there are no colour scheme rules, you may want to incorporate a winter theme. Silver, white and blues will give your wedding the feel of a sparkling ice palace while rich reds and greens will give it a more festive feel. Remember Christmas was originally a Pagan festival to brighten up the middle of a bleak season, so why not let your wedding do the same?

Venues – much as you may have visions of a big outdoor wedding, climate and weather could be a limiting factor (this is Britain after all). With this in mind, be practical with your venue and make sure there’s plenty of indoor space, but if the building has grounds it does always give you the option of a marquee with some portable heaters – cosy and spacious!

And if you fancy it…why not book a wedding for New Year’s Eve? You’ll start the new year as a married couple, everyone will be on a high with the sense of occasion and, most importantly, your other half is sure to remember your anniversary!

HELP

I’M GETTING MARRIED

After the euphoria of a proposal and showing off your new ring, reality sets in. You have to organise a wedding. That means finding a dress, booking a venue, choosing invitations and making sure Uncle Nigel and Auntie Helen are sitting nowhere near each other on the table plan...

Photography by Rosie Parsons

36

www.labellemag.com

Although it’s great fun and can be incredibly exciting, the pressure involved in getting it right is second to none, so imagine if you had to do it for a living? In the first of a series of interviews, La Belle speaks to wedding planner Shelley Whiting from the Barbican’s Flower Café, whose job, as she puts it herself, is to make your big day as small a problem as possible. So, a couple comes to you saying ‘we’re getting married and don’t know where to start’ – what’s the first thing you have to do as a wedding planner? There’s no doubt that organising a wedding is a huge task, so I always check a couple’s budget first and go from there. When we have an idea of what we’re working with, I gauge the number of guests on the day and help the couple to choose and book a venue based on numbers, cost and location. By starting with the venue, especially for the reception, you can take a lot of the stress off straight away! And then? I always sit down with the couple and get as much information as possible about what would make up their perfect wedding – colours, ideas, themes, traditions...the list goes on and I love working with people’s imaginations. I always make sure that we’re realistic in terms of size and budget, but my job is to make their dreams a reality with as little stress as possible. Is it essential to have a wedding planner? I often find that when couples lack time, money or contacts then I’m a great source of help and information. It’s often nice to have another pair of eyes on things too – I never take over, just make sure that everything is exactly as they want it. How often do you need to meet up with your clients? In the same way as weddings vary depending on who’s getting married, so the planning stages do too. Some couples want to call once a week, others once a month, and some just want contact every now and again to make sure things are running smoothly. As long as we meet up regularly at times that suit them, I’m happy. Have you ever had any weird requests? Not really, although I did have a bride who kept changing her colour scheme. I’d sorted the invitations, which were handmade, and the night before they were due to be sent she decided she wanted a pink theme instead of aqua blue. It wasn’t an ideal situation but I got it sorted in the end! What’s the hardest thing about the job? As a wedding is the biggest day of someone’s life, it’s making sure that everything runs smoothly. The last thing you want is them remembering the day for a technical hitch or timing error, it has to be perfect. Although I’ve done the job for several years it’s still quite nerve racking. And the best thing? Being a part of such a wonderful occasion. To know that a couple are so happy and you’ve helped make their dream wedding a reality, there isn’t a lot that beats that feeling.

RETRO TWIST

Image supplied by The Ivory Tower

A modern take on a old classic, this style works on shoulder length hair and can be worn with any veil.

UP THE AISLE IN STYLE It’s hard enough having to decide on a hairstyle for a night out so deciding what to do with it on your wedding day is quite a daunting prospect...but to make things a bit easier La Belle enlisted the help of Kelly from Vogue Hair on Ebrington Street in Plymouth, who offers a few points to ponder when choosing your style. 44

www.labellemag.com

Everyone will of course be looking at you, the bride, on your wedding day, so make sure that YOUR style is chosen before those of the wedding party. An understated bridesmaid with simple accessories will always complement you much more. Bear in mind: 1. Style of your dress – if you have a detailed bodice or intricately laced top, you want it to be seen and admired, don’t let your hair cover it up. 2. Season and possible weather - the autumn and winter seasons are often damper and less kind to ornately styled hair, so think about the elements’ effect. 3. Your hair type – work with what you’ve got. If you have fine, short hair then try not to set your heart on clusters of thick curls. If you’re stuck for ideas then ask your stylist, but there are lots of options for all hair lengths and thicknesses. 4. Veil or tiara – if you want to wear particular accessories, you need to pick a style that can hold them. 5. Like and dislikes – for example, if you want to draw less attention to your forehead or make sure your ears are covered up, tell your stylist and they can suggest a ‘do for you. You should have two main meetings with your stylist before the wedding: the first three to four months before so you can discuss exactly what you want – remember to take as many pictures of favourite styles as you can – and the second six weeks before as a timed dress rehearsal with full accessories. Although the hairstyles of bridesmaids and

www.labellemag.com

other wedding party members tend not to take as long, always inform your stylist of who is having their hair done on the day of the wedding. Remember it can take up to 45 minutes to put your dress on so allow plenty of time for everyone’s hair to be done beforehand! Finally, remember your groom is marrying you, not the leading retail hairspray brand so don’t feel you have to go big just because you can. It often comes back to the old cliché ‘less is more’ – you don’t want your hair to detract from your dress and beautiful smile on the day! Kelly at Vogue Hair and her team of eight trained stylists have an experienced and thorough approach to styling wedding hair, offering professional service, affordable prices and helpful advice. They tailor their wedding package to suit each individual, no matter how big or small the wedding, ensuring everything is exactly as you want it. All pre-wedding consultations are done at the salon, but if you want them to come to you on the day they can travel to your home or venue on request so you don’t need to lift a finger. If you want a stylish vintage celebration, you need to keep things in perspective... It has to be about friends, family and love. It is not plausible to throw a huge but quaint wedding; only go for the vintage style if you want to keep things intimate. Vintage weddings are proving to be very popular these days but the key to getting it right is to NOT rule out the 21st century – it is possible to throw a vintage wedding that mixes retro with more modern tastes. Think vintage inspired dress, a band playing classics from your era of choice and raiding your grandmother’s home for beautiful, if slightly mismatched, teacups, plates and glasses. 52

BEG, BORROW AND BARGAIN to achieve the vintage wedding of your dreams! If you cannot afford to throw your wedding at a stately home, then elegant drapes, large conservatories or a marquee with intricate decoration will provide the perfect atmosphere for the era you’ve chosen. When it comes to the dress, genuine vintage dresses can be incredibly pricey (not to mention moth-eaten – this is your one day, remember?) so it may be worth biting the bullet and going for a vintage inspired gown. Most bridal boutiques will stock several designs drawn from different points in time, so don’t be afraid to shop around. Food can be risky, our tastes naturally evolve over time, so it may be smarter to go for a menu people will enjoy rather than remember for the wrong reasons. If you don’t want people to forget your theme then make sure your centrepieces remind them. Lastly, don’t take it too seriously. After all, it is probably only you who is infatuated with the perfect vintage wedding, so go with the flow and let the 21st century creep in! www.labellemag.com

FIT & HEALTHY MEANS COMFY & HAPPY

This wedding planning business, cake tasting included, can get quite stressful! But if you’re keen to tone up and slim down for your perfect honeymoon bikini body, or maybe just eager to feel more active in time for a busy married life, think about a couple of simple lifestyle changes and be pleasantly surprised at the result. Firstly give yourself a reasonable timescale and target – don’t crash diet as you’ll lack the energy you need for essential wedding preparations and your weight will almost certainly creep back on. Depending on your aims, give yourself up to a year to succeed and look at subtly adapting your day-today activities. A visit to a health and lifestyle 56

coach will help you to work out exactly what changes you need to make, your local fitness expert Neil Damerell focuses on personalised training programs lasting three, six or twelve months. It’s common sense that if you eat less and exercise more you’ll lose weight, but have you ever thought about exactly what you’re eating? Swapping loaves of bread for pitta bread lowers your salt intake, whilst eating white meat instead of red lowers your intake of saturated fat, resulting in a leaner, healthier you. Even just decreasing portion size so you’re eating less, or eating slowly so your body has chance to recognise when you’re full can make a big difference. www.labellemag.com

A POSITIVE WORD OF WARNING, LADIES – IT’S ALMOST CERTAIN IN THE WEEKS OR MONTHS LEADING UP TO YOUR WEDDING THAT

YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT.

Also walking instead of driving (within reason!) will help you burn off extra calories, as well as making you feel more energised and upbeat. It doesn’t take obsessive gym trips to lose weight and feel better, just little bursts of cardiovascular work (i.e. when you’re a bit breathless and heart thumps faster than usual!) will make for a more effective, healthier body. Perhaps you could even encourage your other half to partake in exercise activities with you – it would be the perfect excuse to start those long awaited salsa or zumba classes… No matter what your shape or size, remember that you WILL look beautiful on your wedding day – given the happiness www.labellemag.com

and individuality that will beam from you, it’s impossible for you not to be. But if you’ve yet to find the dress that feels just right for you, check out our ‘Perfect Fit’ tips on page 7 for some handy advice on the style of dress to suit your body shape. Finally, don’t panic! If you have found the perfect gown but it starts to loosen as the wedding gets closer, there are always alterations specialists who will be more than happy to help you keep that dress looking as stunning as you are. LAST NIGHT OF FREEDOM

On your last night of freedom it’s entirely your decision what you do – L-plates, veils, badges, saucy nicknames, we all know how it works and it’s great fun. But how about some new and inventive ideas for your girly gathering? Whether you’re hosting lots of people or having a more intimate get together, have a look at our hen party ideas and see if we can’t give you a few tips on how to make your bash go with a bang.

Weekend away - it has to be budget dependent, so perhaps Barbados or Mauritius is a bit ambitious, but why not get the girls together for a few nights away from home? Nights out can cost quite a bit when you think about it, so it could be worth getting more for your money by having an all inclusive package abroad (think of the weather!) or renting a country cottage for a weekend. Pampering session – an exclusive spa would be the perfect treat for you and your friends, but even if you’re looking a little closer to home you can treat yourself to a haircut, make-up demonstration and manicure before the big day. It doesn’t even have to be a style you would normally have –let the expert glam you up so you feel fabulous on your last night of freedom. Team games – hen nights can be quite difficult to plan if you have lots of friends who don’t know each other or guests from different generations (i.e. Nan and Auntie Peggy want to come…) so set up teams and challenges to get people mingling. If you’re out for the day you could have a fun obstacle course, or if it’s an evening have a quiz or list of things you have to collect. You might want to save the game of ‘I have never’ until later, but encouraging people to get involved is great – plus they will then already be acquainted when the wedding comes around. Finally, fancy dress…it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but why not try something a little glamorous? A 1920s theme complete with feather boas and long gloves is stylish as well as fun, or even get everyone to rent a posh frock for the evening, wherever you’re planning on spending it. If you’re really ambitious you could have a theme such as ‘what I wanted to be when I grew up’ or ‘film and TV characters from the 1980s’, but whatever you do make sure your outfit is comfortable! www.labellemag.com
