Twobirds was founded on the premise that being a bridesmaid doesn’t have to mean forgoing style, and that a bridesmaid can not only be happy for the bride on her special day, but happy that she looks so fabulous! “We love working with brides and bridesmaids every day to see their wedding dreams coming true xx”. THE SWEETEST THING... Granted, everyone really just wants to see the dress, but the cake will be another important part of your wedding theme and colour scheme. Make it relevant to you…if you’re not into flowers don’t buy a cake covered in freshly picked gerberas! The cake should not only reflect your wedding, but your personality – this is your chance to be inventive. While there are thousands of styles and designs to choose from, the simplest, most effective thing to do is to picture your cake in your head – what do you see? Three tiers? Coloured icing? Write a list and when you come to shop for your cake, life will be easier for both you and the cake maker.

Truly Scrumptious Cakes

Dazzlelicious Cakes

Some of the popular styles at the moment include the classic, the extravagant and the cute and quirky cupcakes, so have a look and see which takes your fancy to give you a good starting point. The classic: think elegant, luxurious and graceful. Often seen with three round tiers made of fruit or sponge filling, this cake is what you would traditionally associate with weddings. Gracefully decorated with white fondant icing, the cake acts as the plain canvas for any design you choose. But most couples opting for the classic tend to keep it simple, choosing a couple of flowers to match the colour scheme with a ribbon around the base. With vintage and bohemian being popular themes, dainty pearls with small white roses add a perfect finishing touch.

But whatever you choose, add details with a timeless feel to keep the classic basis shining through. The extravagant: while you can make it tiered and timeless, it’s louder, brighter and has a lot more scope for being individual. There are virtually no rules and it’s all about making your work edible art. Dazzle your guests with a wild carnival of rich colour and indulgent treats, adding different textures, flavours and striking visual imagery. You don’t even have to opt for a normal filling - why not have yours made from stacked profiteroles or chocolate straws? The phrase ‘it looks too good to eat’ should apply to any cake you have, but if you opt for the extravagant style it should be deemed worthy of a place in a gallery.

Cupcakes: growing in popularity in recent years, the cupcakes provide little bites of heaven in a pretty and delectable layout. You can vary flavours, colours, toppings and designs to make the cakes individual to you, and if you and your cake maker are really ambitious you could decorate each one differently with a unique and personal embellishment. Cupcakes are traditionally presented on a stylish tier to show them off and add height to the design, but if you fancy displaying them as one large batch, look at quirky china plates which will complement the toppings. Whatever you do, remember it’s the little details that count so make your wedding cake unique to you! Also bear in mind that cake doesn’t actually have to be sweet. Some retailers are able to offer cheese cakes – truckles of cheese moulded into tiers – which can be served with biscuits and chutney.

If you do fancy this idea you must remember not to heat the room too much as the smell could start to become overpowering. But it would certainly go down well with a late night whiskey as the dancing progresses… Finally, think about when you’ll be serving your cake. You can cut the cake after the main course and serve it as a dessert, or perhaps you’d prefer to wait until the wedding breakfast is finished and hand it around in finger portions? If you’re going to do the latter try not to pick a filling that’s too gooey as you may end up with some messy guests! And one more thing – remember to order your cake a good six months in advance. That way you’ll give the cake maker plenty of time to create your edible art and it will be guaranteed to arrive on time.

DRESS TO IMPRESS Shopping for a wedding dress is generally more complicated than shopping for a normal outfit – there’s a lot more to think about with shape, style, cost and potential for adjustment. However the two do have one thing in common: fashionable trends to look out for. La Belle had a chat to Michelle from Ivory Tower in Plymouth and found out what’s in fashion this season, with a few points to ponder and heaps of helpful ideas. Playing it straight-laced Kate Middleton has got a lot to answer for as the demure, vintage lace look has come roaring back into fashion since her wedding to Prince William. Although we saw her classic Sarah Burton dress at Westminster Abbey back in 2011, brides are still going mad for high necks or bodices with lace covering the décolletage and arms. Ivory is also equally as popular as white now, creating an older, more vintage appearance, and choosing a veil with a touch of lace adds the finishing touch to the modest look. Be careful if you’re looking at dresses with lace all over as they may irritate your skin, but a touch of the delicate material in the right place screams class and purity. 16

Watch your back One thing that brides forget is how often people see the back of their wedding dress. Walking down the aisle, during the first dance, while working the room and talking to their guests…it’s a lot more obvious than you may think. With that in mind, many women are starting to consider what the back of the dress looks like as well as the front. A lace-up corset back is always classic and flattering as it defines the waist, or a dress with material buttons down to the tail-bone draws all of the attention to the narrowest part of your back. Brides are also going mad for the open back, where the shoulder blades and below the bra-line are on show, or a muscle back, where a strip of material runs down between the neck and the waist to join the dress together. There are more options, and any dresses with detail on the back are ‘in’, but be careful if you’re choosing a veil as you don’t want it to be too fussy and draw the attention away from your dress. Whatever you decide on, fashion is only there for guidance and you should choose whatever suits you personally. But remember everyone will be looking at you from 360 degrees, so always check every angle. www.labellemag.com

A chilled-out feel with a lot of heart can make for a simple and affordable wedding with enough style and personality to wow your guests with ease. So before you worry about certain items not matching or having to handwrite place settings yourself, consider the theme which could flutter your worries away… So what’s the difference between bohemian and vintage? It’s true that the two themes can intertwine and it’s not worth discounting one to favour the other, but imagine brighter shades and bolder shapes for boho to give you a starting point. Whereas vintage will see pastel colours and ornate patterns and decoration, bohemian consists of brighter tones in stronger, simpler designs. Rather than crystal chandeliers and antique candelabras, think paper lanterns, wooden photo frames and candles. By throwing in some vintage with some quirky modern day treats such as penny sweets or brightly

www.labellemag.com

coloured crockery you can make for the perfect bohemian atmosphere, so let the ideas flow and see what you think. Vintage dresses are all about the lace and the dainty detail, whereas the bohemian style sees floatier and less intricate designs. Empire lines work for both but to tip the scales the boho way try a maxi dress or Grecian tunic. A shorter dress with a princess cut would also be suited to a bohemian belle, and to perfect the look (not to mention keeping it comfy) you could wear sandals or flip flops rather than high heels. When thinking about the venue, keep it simple and rustic – bare walls, exposed brickwork, wooden beams, it all fits. It is simplistic but you can dress it up with drapes, fairy lights and greenery. Don’t worry about a larger venue feeling too empty either, as streamers and material draping from the ceiling can make a sparser room feel more intimate.

Remember by keeping it simple you can a) keep your costs down – a plain hall or barn is cheaper to hire than one full of intricate antiques – and b) make it more personal – like painting on a blank canvas. Don’t be afraid to let the outside creep in too as nature and greenery are a fundamental part of the bohemian theme. Flowers with the appearance of natural hedgerows complete with daisies and heather would be perfect. Remember to check the full seasonal availability of blooms at www.flowers.org.uk. For the full effect you could even wear a crown of flowers or large daisy in your hair, just remember to keep the hairstyle as simple as possible, perhaps down or tied loosely behind. Décor should always be about you as a couple but with the bohemian theme you have even more scope to make this so. Handwritten place settings, a chalkboard displaying your table plan, ribbons with trinkets on the backs of the chairs, handmade vases, straw hats, sunglasses… the list is literally endless. There is no sense of uniformity and everywhere your guests look should say another little something about you both. And when you consider that nothing has to match, there’s no reason why your bridesmaids should either. With your attendants likely to be of different shapes, sizes, heights and personalities why not let each of them have a dress which represents their own style? If you’re set on a particular colour then you could just vary the dress shapes, but the theme really does give you the chance to let everything roam free.

FREE SPIRIT

Anything goes wi th boho. Feel free to mix and match your decor to your he art’s content. www.labellemag.com 49

Nature and being natural are a huge part of the bohemian theme so try not to worry about structure and just let everything fall as it will.

But remember the one golden rule – if you love it, it will work. 49

Bloomin’ Lovely So you’ve booked the venue, sorted the registrar and are starting to think about the finer elements of the day. It might seem early, but it’s about now that you should start to consider your flowers. Don’t worry, flowers aren’t for everyone and some brides take the view, ‘as long as it matches my colour scheme I don’t mind’. But with your wedding being totally personal to you, why not let your flowers reflect your personality too? 50

www.labellemag.com

Firstly dig deep into your memories – what were the first flowers he surprised you with? What was in your mum’s bouquet? Are there any floral smells that remind you of a particular date or holiday? Choosing flowers which are filled with emotion make for a truly personal touch and render the decoration far more poignant. Also consider when you’re getting married. If you can find flowers in season it can make it cheaper as they will be easier for your florist to obtain. Spring Daffodil, phlox, sweet pea, carnation, bupleurum (yellow/green flowers perfect for a filler or foliage) Summer Aster, tulip, lily of the valley, waxflower (small and scented, ideal for fillers) Autumn Dahlia (dramatic pompom shape), curcuma (tropical-looking flower on straight stem), lilac, marigold, solidago (popular yellow filler flower) Winter Gebera, chrysanthemum, veronica, gypsophila (the white filler that usually comes with roses). Even lilies are available, but check with your florist if you want a particular colour. For a full list of availability visit www.flowers.org.uk. Or for something you can have all year round, try an English country garden for inspiration – mixing vibrant roses with pieces of lavender and even seasonal berries can create a natural but very effective look. Next, think about where you want the flowers. The bouquet is always a good starting point as it’s very central, but also think about décor – are you thinking of pew ends, table centres, arches, buttonholes, favours?

www.labellemag.com

Imagine what you want to decorate, how big you want the arrangements to be and let the ideas flow from there. Bigger doesn’t have to mean better – quirky cupcake flower arrangements can make for the perfect favour or table decoration – and if you’re opting for a vintage or bohemian theme or just keeping your costs down, why not put the flowers in a watering can, metal bucket or jam jar? Remember when you’re considering table centres that you don’t want anything too overpowering. If you opt for traditional round tables, your guests will want to be able to see each other and won’t be able to if there’s a 10-foot foliage slap bang in the middle. So look at something which will be a talking point without being over the top – maybe a solitary flower of a vibrant colour surrounded by seasonal leaves and even fairy lights. Whatever you do don’t pick anything with a very strong fragrance as it could overpower your guests. If you do fancy something bigger, you could always opt for silk flowers. These flowers are available to hire and can give you the option of more glamorous displays without needing the Hollywood budget. To finish off the perfect table centres, you could even have dainty candelabras or ostrich feathers to add texture to your floral decoration. And finally look at the little things – rose petals around the tables, small flowers by the guest book and even flowers by the sinks in the toilets will all make for that extra special touch and talking points for your guests. It may seem a lot to take on, and as with anything it’s entirely your decision, but there really is no limit to what you can achieve with your floral fancies.

THE

PERSONAL TOUCH

When it comes to planning any event, especially your own wedding, you have to get the big things right: timings, numbers to cater for, venue selection…the list is pretty extensive. But as you’re sorting out the big things, remember it’s the little details that make your day extra special... John Barwood Photography

58

www.labellemag.com

Entrance is everything – think about the first thing that you want your guests to see as they enter the ceremony venue. Flowers look beautiful if you choose to have them, but have you thought about bunting? Or personalised decorations? Also remember that music and sound are equally as emotive as visual decor, so think about and choose your entrance music carefully. It doesn’t have to be as obvious as ‘here comes the bride’, you can use a piece of music special to you – maybe you could have it played live if you were able to strategically bring together your venue and band? As we all know, the ceremony is followed by the reception and again personal decoration is key. Why not put a wine glass charm on each of the glasses? Or sprinkle personalised confetti? Or put up a photo board of you and your other half? Little details like this not only provide a visual treat as everyone waits to be seated, but become a talking point between your guests if they don’t know each other well. When everyone does come to sit down, whether in a formal or more casual setting, it’s always a good idea to name each table after something of personal interest, as it saves the debate about who will moan when put on table ten! For example, if you’ve travelled, you could name each one after cities you’ve visited, or if you’re into nature, perhaps birds or wild animals. Also, leave a camera on each table (disposable rather than digital, unless you really fancy splashing out!) for people to use, that way you can truly capture every moment of your special day.

it’s the little things that make the big things count

It’s tradition to leave wedding favours for your guests; that is, something little they can take away as a thank you for attending. Sugared almonds have always been very popular, but what about something a little more original, such as cake pops or toffee apples? Mints in intricate display boxes are always a good idea too, especially if everyone has had a rich meal and needs to freshen up. Finally, you may wish to thank your loyal bridesmaids and ushers for their help on (and not to mention leading up to) the day itself, so have a think about what they might like to keep as a memento. Perhaps cufflinks, scotch glasses or watches for the boys, and wine glasses, jewellery or a spa day for the girls. Remember it’s the little things that make the big things count, so be as precise and personal as possible and perfection is certain to follow! www.labellemag.com

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED Chair covers arguably used to be a luxurious extra, but they have quickly become a wedding essential with the power to transform a room from basic to beautiful.

64

www.labellemag.com

South West Chair Covers

The traditional style of a white cover with a coloured sash is ever popular, but to give you some more ideas about what to consider our lovely advertisers have thrown in some handy advice. It may sound obvious but you don’t want to start planning your chair covers before you’ve even chosen your venue or set a date. As soon as you have your ceremony / reception venue sorted you can then start to research companies and liaise with them to explore different options. Some places have a dedicated chair cover company – if they do, fantastic, but research the company before you just hand everything over to them. You want to make sure you get exactly what you want rather than what is just easiest to acquire. The best companies not only

supply the covers, but offer advice, provide samples, fit the covers and collect them after the wedding. You don’t necessarily need to have chosen your colour scheme before deciding you want chair covers – all the finer details can be chosen at a later date. Some companies can in fact provide you with different sash samples to give you an idea of material as well as shade, which can come in very handy when selecting bridesmaids’ dresses. By keeping in close contact with your chosen chair cover company you can get a clear idea of how they can dress the chairs, how they can best accommodate your budget, other ideas on how to decorate the venue and ideas about what can be done to give the chairs maximum style.

Cover Cupboard

www.labellemag.com

65

Cover Cupboard

There are so many options available in terms of material – the covers themselves generally come in cotton or lycra and can be ruched (tight with neat crinkles) or jacquard (applied straight). Sashes come in all sorts of styles too, with silk and organza (a thin, plain weave fabric) ever popular. Vintage is still very much an influence in weddings at the moment and chair covers are also embracing the theme, with lace sashes or lace trim. You can even add an organza sash behind the lace to keep to your colour theme, providing an elegant, vintage look. 66

www.labellemag.com

Sitting Pretty South West

Accessorising chair sashes is also becoming more and more desirable. With diamantĂŠ broaches, buckles, flowers, butterflies or even feathers, the possibilities are endless. Or why not add more sashes? Some brides choose to have double bows in contrasting colours – especially if bridesmaids are wearing different colours or the wedding takes on a particular theme rather than a colour scheme. There are also so many different styles of bow tying that you have even more scope for individuality. Try them on the side, into a flower corsage or keep it contemporary with a simple knot. And finally if you fancy a twist on a traditional chair cover, your chairs can be dressed with hoods, corsets, sash corsages or bespoke styling ideas with accessories. The choice really is yours and, as with anything, taking the time to do your research will ensure you get everything exactly as you want it.

MUM’S THE

WORD Second only to the bride herself, the mothers of the bride and groom are the two most central women on a wedding day. Their outfits have the power to make heads turn and conversations start, so it’s definitely worth giving their perfect ensemble some thought. As with all couples, all mothers are different and there are no strict rules when it comes to choosing an outfit, but La Belle went to speak to Kevin from Occasions by Uno Boutique who took us through a few ideas and guidelines. Firstly, it’s important that both mothers consider the wedding colour scheme and liaise with each other on a plan of action. For example, some mums try to match the cravat colour of the ushers or choose a similar shade to the bride’s flowers, whereas others might go for a different colour entirely. Some have no idea at all and choose to shop around which is absolutely fine, but by talking to each other they will avoid turning up in exactly the same outfit! Also remember it’s never too early to start looking. Specialised shops such as Uno Boutique work with designers, which cater for a range of budgets, to keep their ranges fresh and exclusive and don’t always stock more than one dress in a particular size. So, mums, if you shop early and like what you see, you will have more chance of getting a dream outfit in your size – and even if the size isn’t there, there will still be plenty of time to order it. You should also remember to buy for the size you are now, not the size you want to be on the wedding day. Buying a ‘target’ dress is a mistake that lots 72

of people make and will only add unnecessary pressure to a time which should be great fun. If you do lose some weight and the outfit is too loose, work with a seamstress to get it just right for you. A good stockist will always have outfits to suit all shapes and sizes, so try a few and see what you fancy. Armography (yes it is a word, Kevin said so) comes next, which is how you might think about covering the tops of your arms. Most mums want to have a small sleeve or a touch of material at the top for added comfort and style, so consider the sleeve length and / or if you want to put a jacket with it. It’s also traditional that a mother’s hat, bag and shoes all match and this shows no signs of going out of fashion anytime soon. Around 75 per cent of people take that option and choose items from the same range – remember too that you can have shoes dyed to match the colour of your ensemble. However you could be quirky and have a statement fascinator, or accessories which just complement each other rather than match.

Finally, if you want to get maximum use from your outfit and decide you’re going to wear it again, it’s all about the accessories. If you wear it with a matching hat, jacket and heels on the day, dress your outfit differently another time with a lighter jacket, a chunky necklace and flat or lower-heeled shoes. It’s a case of trying a few ideas and seeing what looks best. Whatever you decide to do you, you won’t be anything other than gorgeous as you smile at your son or daughter taking their vows, and picking that perfect outfit will make you the true definition of yummy mummy!

REASONING THE RHYME ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe’. Even if you haven’t heard of the last line – we’re guessing new currency pushed it out of use a bit – everyone has heard the rhyme that brides are supposed to adhere to for good luck on their wedding day. Although it’s difficult to pinpoint where exactly in history it came from, there are a number of reasons why the rhyme has stuck and several good ways to incorporate it into your outfit.

82

www.labellemag.com www.labellemag.com

Something old – an item to symbolise continuity with the bride’s family and the past. Often a piece of jewellery passed down from generations above is favoured, as it’s subtle, personal and will not dominate an outfit. Very rarely will a bride wear a dress previously worn by an older relative, but a nice touch can be added by to taking a small part of an old dress – such as a piece of lace – and incorporating it into the bride’s clothing. Stitching it into the hem or perhaps wearing it as part of the headdress can be a unique way of keeping your family with you. Something new – optimism and hope for the bride’s new life ahead. The dress is usually the obvious choice here, but don’t forget the shoes, the tiara/veil, the jewellery, the accessories…the list could be quite extensive! Something borrowed – usually an item from a married friend or family member whose good fortune in marriage passes over to you. It obviously depends on personal taste, size and of course whether it will match what you’re wearing, but jewellery is again very popular. You could also opt for a bag or accessory that you don’t necessarily carry all day and make good use out of what your friend has lent you. Something blue – to symbolise purity and love. Roman brides wore blue dresses but unless it’s exactly what you had planned, you don’t have to be that drastic. Many brides wear a blue garter as something for only their husband to see, or have a small amount of blue on a piece of jewellery. However, you could wear blue nail varnish on your toes, incorporate blue into your posy or wear a blue gem in your hair. Unless blue is your colour scheme it’s worth being quite subtle – it doesn’t have to be big to fit the criteria. And finally a silver sixpence in your shoe – representing wealth and financial security. It’s less and less common for people to keep to this part of the rhyme (for a start, where on earth would you find a sixpence?!) but you could just take a small penny and keep it on you as you walk down the aisle. Practise with it first though because you really don’t want to be limping… www.labellemag.com www.labellemag.com

CARRIED AWAY Unfortunately we can’t promise you a pumpkin turning into a sparkling carriage on your wedding day, but we can offer you equally glamorous alternatives that will make you feel extra special. Whether traditional or modern, big or understated, there are lots of transport options out there to suit every beautiful bride, so read on and find the perfect one for you.

If you’re up for glamour, why not have a limousine? They don’t necessarily have to be pink and tacky to serve their purpose – they come in a variety of colours and scream splendour whether you see them from the inside or out. They’re also very roomy and often come complete with mini bar and a built in music system, so you’re guaranteed an entertaining as well as a comfortable journey. If you opt for a country wedding you may have to be careful with this option though, as you don’t want to be stuck in narrow windy lanes. If you fancy something a little bit smaller, have a look at a retro option such as a Jaguar or a Mercedes. This classy but affordable idea can give you the experience of a lifetime without being overstated. If you fancy a

84

retro car, do check that you can get in and out without any wardrobe malfunctions and that there is room for whoever is walking you down the aisle in the back. But as long as you’re comfortable, sit back, relax and enjoy your last journey as a ‘Miss’! Then of course there is the vintage car, a classic, once-ina-lifetime ride that is guaranteed to turn heads and ooze luxury. With large windows and wider seats the car offers a perfect photo opportunity – cameras will be flashing as you pull up to your venue, people just dying to get a glimpse of your dress. This option certainly tends to be the one that most brides go for, but what about if you want to be a bit different?

www.labellemag.com

sit back, relax and enjoy your last journey as a ‘miss’

If you fancy a variation, have a look at a novelty VW camper van – with quirky style and a less formal feel, it would suit the bride who likes classy but casual. And finally there’s the princess option – the horse and carriage. There are few people who don’t dream of arriving in such regal style but you have to bear in mind some practicalities. Firstly, be careful if you book one for a winter wedding as not only will it be cold but the chance of bad weather is much higher. Also bear in mind that even in the summer good weather isn’t guaranteed (this is Britain, after all) so be prepared for anything. Finally take distance and route into account – for example you don’t want your pony having to traverse a motorway, and

www.labellemag.com

nor do you want him trekking more than a few miles. But with all that said, there’s little that can beat the feeling of waving at passers-by as you sit like Cinderella on your way to marry Prince Charming. And while you’re thinking about travelling in style, why not let your guests do the same? OK, so minibuses aren’t necessarily the height of fashion but by laying them on at convenient meeting points your guests won’t need to worry about driving. It also saves on finding extra parking space at your reception venue (just make sure that whoever travelled on the bus gets on it to go back – you don’t want anyone stranded!)
