Katy Perry has won the hearts of Russell Brand and the British public, she plans to make England her second home

california g Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson – aka Katy Perry – was raised in California. Her strict Christian pastor parents forbade all forms of entertainment other than gospel music but the girl moved on to become an international music and fashion identity. In high school, Katy found the opportunity to pursue a career in music and in 2001 released a self-titled gospel album as Katy Hudson. At the age of 17, she moved to Los Angeles and worked with Glen Ballard on an album for record label Island but it went nowhere and Perry was dropped by Island. Katy signed with Columbia Records in 2004 but the arrangement didn’t work out. While waiting to find another label, she worked in an independent A&R company called Taxi Music. In 2006, Katy featured in the P.O.D. video single Goodbye for Now, made a cameo appearance in the Carbon Leaf video Learn to Fly, and Gym Class Heroes’ Cupid’s Chokehold. Columbia then recommended Perry to Capitol. A DVD featuring a video of Simple and a three-song demo that included Waking Up in Vegas sealed the deal. Katy signed with Capitol Music Group in 2007, adopted the name Katy Perry, and released her first Internet single Ur So Gay. She rose to fame with the release of her second single I Kissed a Girl in 2008. Katy’s first mainstream studio album One of the Boys followed later that year and reached 33 on the world’s best selling album chart. Her second single Hot n Cold led to her sophomore studio album Teenage Dream. The album was released in August 2010 and debuted at number one on Billboard. The album included hit singles California Gurls, Teenage Dream, and Firework. All three topped the charts on the Billboard Hot 100 and worldwide. Katy appeared at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards last September. She was nominated for two awards and presented the Best Male Video Award to Eminem. Katy shot the video for Firework and performed at a concert in Budapest towards the end of 2010, it was her first concert in Central and Eastern Europe. International tours launched Katy in Britain and Europe. Last year, she was a guest judge on the seventh series of the British television show The X Factor; released a fragrance called Purr, and claimed a role in the upcoming film The Smurfs. Perry had a long relationship with Travie McCoy but married British comedian Russell Brand in October 2010. Katy met Russell Brand on the set of Get Him to the Greek in 2008. They married near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India. Katy says she plans to take British citizenship. “England is like my second home,” she says.

Camila Alves

is Muxo The former model’s unique handcrafted leather handbag range Muxo (pronounced mucho) is a celebrity fashion essential

Brazilian-born Camila Alves shows dreams can come true. The 27-year-old former model turned handbag designer is the love of movie star Matthew McConaughey’s life and the mother of his two children. Camila grew up in the Brazilian countryside with her father (a farmer) and her fashion designer mother. She made the move to Los Angeles when she was only 15 years old. When Camila arrived in LA, she spoke only Portuguese but learned English while working as a house cleaner and waiter. At 19, Camila moved to New York to pursue a modelling career. Her career success took her around the world. Trips to France, Spain, China, Africa, and numerous other destinations helped develop her sense of style. While travelling internationally Camila found there was a lack of handbags that suited her needs. She says it was impossible to find strong, sexy, and unusual handbags. “All the handbags were either too small (really cute but impractical) or too big (practical but not fashionable) so I created a handbag that fitted my lifestyle,” Camila says. In 2005, Camila and her mother began work on what would become the Muxo handbag line. It took three years of experimenting to create practical, fashionable, high quality, and sexy handbags. Every bag in the range is handmade by Camila and her mother. The handbags are influenced by Camila’s favourite places. These include Malibu, Brazil, and New York City. She says Muxo bags are as ready for the beach as they are for a shopping trip on Fifth Avenue. More than 50 bags are on display and available for sale online at mymuxo.com. 12

Family Traditions

set in stone Some people have the innate ability to appreciate the finer things in life; they have a passion for beauty, an understanding of art, music, antiques, or jewellery. The Hannaford family share a passion for jewellery. This family saga spans three generations, each has a deep appreciation of beautiful stones and quality craftsmanship. It is the foundation of the Hannaford’s family business: 5th Avenue Jewellers. 14

label magazine autumn 2011

Opposite: Pam loves the Art Deco bracelet. Nicole’s favourite pieces are the matching black and white diamond bangle, ring, and earrings set from the Ti Amo Collection. Above: The family tradition lives on in three generations with Pam, Nicole and Ariana. Three-year-old Ariana chose the 1.04 carat natural pink diamond ring.

Pam and Bill Hannaford opened their first business in Adelaide many years ago. They began with antiques and collectables, Pam’s passion is antiques. As the business grew, regular clients asked Bill and Pam to find unusual or unique pieces of jewellery. Perfect stones and fine workmanship soon became their focus. The family moved from Adelaide to the Gold Coast in 1984. Bill and Pam had planned to retire but decided they were too young and opened the first 5th Avenue Jewellers in Surfers Paradise. Most people will remember the shop above the TAB near the Bavarian Steak House and the magnificent store in Orchid Avenue. In 1993, 5th Avenue Jewellers opened at Pacific Fair. The stylish jewellery boutique has been a favourite Pacific Fair shopping destination ever since. Pam says their daughter Nicole now manages the business. “I am still actively involved but my husband Bill has taken a step away,” she says. “Bill uses the knowledge and experience gained over more than 30 years to source the best stones from around the world. When he does have a little free time he likes to focus on improving his golf,” Pam says. Pam’s expertise comes to the fore in helping clients choose the perfect piece of jewellery for every occasion. She says people have very defined ideas when it comes to buying a valuable piece. “We all have different tastes in food, fashion, art, and jewellery; the world would be a boring place if we were all the same. I like to discuss every element of the client’s ideas and find the piece that exceeds their expectations,” she says. We asked Pam to select her favourite piece from the current 5th Avenue collection. She chose an exquisite bracelet. Pam says this is a modern piece designed in Art Deco style. “It reveals my passion for antiques and elegant design. The bracelet makes a statement; it is quite wide and very intricate. The bracelet features 17 carats of diamonds set in 18 carat white gold,” she says. Nicole’s speciality is design. She spent many years studying to become a fully qualified gemmologist and valuer. Her exquisite Ti Amo Collection is an expression of the loving care required in the creation of an outstanding piece of jewellery. Nicole says the family background is Italian and ti amo is an Italian term of endearment.

“This collection expresses my love and passion for superb natural stones and quality design,” she says. “These pieces were created from the highest quality stones. The stones were hand selected so every stone in each piece is a perfect match. Each piece shows the sincerity of the love a gift of fine jewellery represents. I know people who want to express the love they feel will enjoy viewing this collection as much as I enjoyed designing it,” Nicole says. “My inspiration comes from a love of natural stones. The stone is the essential element. I create the concept for each piece, choose the initial stone, and design around it. The multi-stone diamond pieces are my expression of classic styles. I was inspired by the world’s leading classical designers. My family has been in the jewellery business for decades. We travel to the world’s jewellery capitals to see the best of the best,” she says. Nicole’s favourite piece is a matching black and white diamond bangle, ring, and earrings set from the Ti Amo Collection. “I love these pieces,” she says. “The bangle is set with nine carats of diamond, the ring 2.04 carats, and the earrings 2.65 carats. The design features the ancient Greco Roman motif, later adopted by Versace. It is timeless and elegant. “My love affair with fine Italian craftsmanship began when I was three years old; I fell in love with the magic of beautiful stones. The Ti Amo Collection features hand selected high-grade diamonds, pearls, and other gems. Now my three-year-old niece Ariana is following in my footsteps. She loves jewellery, can already use a jeweller’s loupe, and has a great eye for a brilliant stone,” Nicole says. Ariana enjoys spending time at 5th Avenue Jewellers and discovering new pieces as they arrive. Nicole says her interest is obviously genetic. “She is such a jewellery girl, she loves to look at the pieces and try them on. Her current passion is pink diamonds. She came to me the other day and said how much she loves them. “Ariana’s favourite piece is a stunning 1.04 carat natural pink diamond ring. Her taste is impeccable; it is probably the most expensive item in the store. The family tradition lives on,” Nicole says. labelmagazine.com.au

Shape makers

Choose fashion that flatters to make the best of every shape

Tall and slender

Womanly curves

This is the look fashion designers favour. A lean frame and long legs can look fabulous but as the shoulders and hips are the same size and the waist is undefined, tall slim girls can look masculine. Create a more feminine look with round-neck tops, fluted sleeves and belted three-quarter coats. A-line skirts create more shape. Cropped trousers soften and shorten the body to give the illusion of curves. Shoes should be balanced, not too chunky or too high.

Curvy girls have a large bust, small waist, shapely hips, and thighs. V-neck tops lengthen curves, while straight skirts create the most flattering shape. Wear tailored coats shaped in at the waist. Low waisted trousers with a medium width hem and soft flowing skirts are flattering. Peep-toe shoes complement this shape. Avoid bold prints and minimise neckline accessories.

Small and rounded A less than slender waist can be disguised. Rounded girls may have an average bust size but an apple shaped middle with a big tummy and a flat bottom. Choose tops with shape around the middle to create an illusion of fabric, not flab. Add flat front trousers and skirts with side or back zips. Wide-legged jeans make legs look longer. Heels slim calves and ankles. Try long straight coats and V-necked jackets.

Perfect pear The average Australian woman tends to be pear shaped with a small bust, long waist, flat tummy, large hips, and thighs. Scarves, shrugs and jackets draw attention to the upper body. Tops with horizontal stripes create a curvy body shape. Choose strapless dresses with flared skirts. Long, straight boots team with skirts and dresses to give an illusion of length. Skirts and dresses should reach below the knee.

A Choo is a shoe

Jimmy Choo was voted Britain’s most desirable designer shoe brand by OK Magazine last year

Jimmy Choo OBE was born to a family of shoemakers in Malaysia; he made his first shoe when he was 11 years old. Jimmy moved to London and trained at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney. The college is now part of the London College of Fashion. Choo graduated in 1983 and by 1986 had opened his own workshop in an old hospital building in North London. His craftsmanship and design skills attracted attention from the well-heeled London set. Jimmy Choo designs featured in a record eight page spread in a 1988 issue of Vogue magazine. Choo soon became a favourite of Diana, Princess of Wales and this created even more interest. Choo was then and is now the leading name in high fashion footwear. In 1996, Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd with British Vogue accessories editor Tamara Mellon. In 2001, Choo sold his 50 per cent stake in the company to Equinox Luxury Holdings Ltd for £10 million. The Jimmy Choo London line, also known as Jimmy Choo Ready-To-Wear or Jimmy Choo has expanded to include handbags and other accessories. Jimmy Choo has a star-studded clientele. Company president Tamara Mellon and creative director Sandra Choi regularly visit Hollywood to attend to the feet of the world’s most glamorous women.

A home or investment property is usually the largest investment people make. Most people engage professional lawyers to ensure their purchase is secure but a growing band of home buyers are opting for do-it-yourself legals. Experts advise caution as property purchases are seldom straight forward. Respected Gold Coast lawyer Simon Bennett says the legalities of buying or selling property is often considered a routine exercise. “In reality it is anything but routine,” he says. “Simply processing data or managing it yourself is not the best way to handle what can become one of the trickiest sectors of law.

It is essential to get it right, the cost of professional legal representation is nothing compared to the risks of DYI legals,” he says.

the body beautiful Dr John Flynn is the skilled and experienced specialist behind Cosmedic and Skin Clinic, the cosmetic surgery clinic in Southport. Dr Flynn, MB, BS, Dip. RACOG, FRACGP. Dip. P. Dermatology, FACCS, is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS). He is a former president and current CEO of the ACCS. Dr. Flynn is Board Certified by the American Board of Laser Surgery. The Cosmedic and Skin Clinic mission is to enhance not exaggerate; to bring out the natural you. Dr John Flynn has more than 20 years medical experience and is a respected educator. He is in demand to consult, lecture, and educate nationally and internationally. Dr Flynn took time out to share his knowledge with Label readers. Dr Flynn says face and body enhancing surgical and non-surgical procedures are now more popular than ever before. “Liposuction and body sculpturing are among the most requested procedures,” he says. “These procedures work on trouble spots that do not respond to diet and exercise.” Q: What is liposuction? a: “Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove localised collections of fat. The most common trouble spots are the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. This procedure can be used to treat flabby upper arms, fat on the neck, and under the chin.” Q: When is liposuction appropriate? a: “Liposuction can help improve overall body appearance by reducing and contouring localised fat. It is not a substitute for weight loss or a cure for obesity but it can help when diet and exercise fail to achieve the desired shape. Anyone considering liposuction should arrange a consultation with a qualified medical professional to discuss individual goals and expectations. “Physical health and emotional stability are primary factors. All surgery has an element of risk; healthy patients are less likely to encounter problems. Liposuction can improve the appearance and help renew self-confidence but a beautiful body does not guarantee a beautiful life or an end to personal problems. The mental attitude helps determine a successful outcome.” Q: What does the procedure involve? a: “Before surgery, we discuss the areas the patient would like to change. An examination establishes fat storage, skin elasticity, medical, and health history. We then discuss the placement of incisions and what other procedures may be needed to achieve optimum results. The vast majority of liposuction procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and overnight admissions are not usually required. “New liposuction techniques involve injecting the area to be suctioned with a special fluid and anaesthesia combination. The fluid constricts the surrounding blood vessels, this reduces bruising and bleeding, minimises pain and helps achieve a speedier recovery. The doctor makes small incisions near the area to be treated. A thin, hollow tube (cannula) is inserted and attached to a machine or syringe that creates a vacuum.

“The cannula is strategically manipulated under the skin to remove the unwanted fatty deposits. Depending on the type of anaesthesia, patients may feel pressure, movement, or an occasional stinging sensation but not actual pain. The doctor constantly reassesses the progress of the liposuction procedure throughout the surgery.” Q: What happens afterWards? a: “Most patients are mobile immediately after liposuction. Someone needs to drive the patient home and help look after them overnight. An extra day or two of bed rest may be needed when large amounts of fat are removed. It is best to have someone around to help in the house. The doctor will usually recommend wearing a tight-fitting garment (similar to a girdle) for a few weeks after surgery to reduce swelling. “Any stitches will be removed in about seven days. Healing is a gradual process. It is best to take up normal activities as soon as possible to reduce post-operative complications. Light exercise is usually permitted within a few days but some patients need to avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks. Results are visible within two or three weeks, but the full effect may not be evident for six months to a year. It is important to maintain a balanced diet and exercise routine to enjoy the new shape for years to come. Many patients find liposuction gives them a boost and the incentive to exercise.” Q: is there a non-surgical option? a: “There is a new treatment called Zeltiq. This is a breakthrough procedure for permanent spot reduction of body fat. Unlike liposuction, Zeltiq is non-invasive and virtually painless. It eliminates fat cells without causing trauma to the skin. The fat cells are freed from the tissues; the body’s natural metabolic process eliminates the cells. In most cases, the procedure takes one to three hours. Clients can spend the time reading, relaxing, or working on their laptops. This procedure does not require the use of needles or incisions. It can reduce the fat layer by 20 to 40 per cent. There is no downtime. The permanent results are noticeable within three weeks after treatment.”

Aromatherapy Choose a fragrance to suit your mood. Fragrance can inspire, relax or seduce.

Fragrance is known to influence our moods and evoke memories. Aromatherapy has been used to improve physical and emotional well-being for centuries. Essential oils from plant extracts are used in specific treatments but our favourite perfumes and body products are wearable aromatherapy. Aromatherapists treat numerous symptoms by using essential oils on the body. As minute quantities penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream the physical healing process begins. The fragrance stimulates a response in the part of the brain that controls feelings and emotions. We can experience some of the benefits of aromatherapy with wearable fragrance. Just as we choose a signature style in the way we dress, we can enhance our daily pleasures with a signature scent. Fragrance selection should work in a similar way to a wardrobe of fashion choices. We wear business clothes to work, casual gear on the weekend, and formal wear for a big night out. Most people would feel out of place wearing weekend wear to work, few would turn up in their undies. The same standards apply to fragrance selection. Seductive fragrances are meant for the boudoir, not the boardroom but we can show a lighter side with a young fresh perfume or create a powerful influence by introducing a particular scent. Perfumes fall into several categories initially established as top notes, middle notes and base notes. Top notes are more volatile and evaporate quickly. They are uplifting, light, refreshing and emotionally stimulating. Middle notes are emotionally balanced, fragrant, and harmonising. Base notes are the least volatile; they are heavy, sedating and calming. Top notes include basil, lemongrass, bergamot, mandarin, clary sage, sweet orange, eucalyptus, palmarosa, fennel, peppermint, ginger, petitgrain, grapefruit, rosewood, lemon and tea tree oil. Middle notes can be based on black pepper, marjoram, camomile, myrtle, clove bud, neroli, cypress pine, geranium, rose, juniper, rosemary, lavender, and ylang ylang. Base notes come from cedarwood, frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver. The most popular top note fragrances include citrus notes such as orange, lemon, and grapefruit. Middle note perfumes are the standards. Most people have a favourite middle note fragrance. It is the one they wear most frequently. Popular choices are rose, and ylang ylang. Base note perfumes are for special occasions. These may include sandalwood, cedarwood, aniseed, vanilla, and amber.

Fellini

Beautifully designed with diners in mind

Ristorante Fellini, the iconic Italian eatery at Marina Mirage, has introduced sunset dinners. Fellini co-owner Carlo Percuoco says the restaurant partners identified a demand for an all day menu. “Diners can now enjoy a Fellini late lunch or sunset dinner,” he says. “Fellini now serves meals from midday right through to late evening. “We no longer close between lunch and dinner. This suits our cosmopolitan clients who may want a leisurely lunch starting at 3pm. Others may prefer to dine early in the evening and watch the sunset over the Broadwater. The full a la carte menu will be available from midday until late,” he says. Fellini’s famed cuisine and unsurpassed reputation for excellence attracts a loyal following of local food lovers as well as visitors from interstate and overseas. A leading national magazine named Fellini one of Australia’s top 100 dining experiences. The restaurant has won more than 100 industry accolades over the years. Carlo says the extended hours are a milestone in the restaurant’s 14-year history. “It’s a sign of the times. People who enjoy fine food want to dine when it suits them,” he says. “People who are visiting from the bigger cities interstate and overseas are used to being able to dine at their favourite restaurants at any time of the day or night. We are meeting this demand while catering for our regular guests who want to make the most of their afternoons and evenings with more flexible dining hours,” Carlo says. Fellini is one of very few waterfront restaurants in the Gold Coast region. The food is consistently exquisite and the service is always exceptional. Ever changing menus present the freshest seasonal produce with Neapolitan culinary flair. The restaurant is owned and operated by the Percuoco family. Carlo, his sister Anna Cacace, partners Richard Burt and Raffaelle Di Benedetto combine their skills to present diners with a modern take on traditional Italian cuisine. Carlo says Raffaelle is the pasta expert. “He makes our pasta fresh each day at Pastificio Fellini, our on-site boutique pasta factory,” he says. “Anna, Richard, and I work with the rest of the kitchen brigade to create beautiful dishes to tantalize diners’ palates while satisfying their appetites. We love our work, and more importantly, our loyal diners continue to enjoy our food, the atmosphere, and our hospitality,” Carlo says. Finlandia is famous for their 100 per cent natural flavour infusions; Finlandia Grapefruit is one of the world’s finest flavoured vodkas. Finlandia mixologist Patrick McEwan created this cocktail to showcase the product and delight cocktail lovers.

Craggy Range Wine – prestige plus

New Zealand’s Craggy Range Wine is crafted from grapes grown in several vineyards. Craggy Range winemakers combine unique and sometimes contradictory traditions and innovations. The result is outstanding. In exceptional vintages, the soil, climate, and culture come together in unity. Selections are made and released in a limited collection of single vineyard wines. The name of each wine reflects its heritage. Craggy Range Prestige Range includes Les Beaux Cailloux, Aroha, Le Sol., Sophia, and The Quarry. Les Beaux Cailloux, Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Hawkes Bay is made from a single chardonnay block planted with a variety of clones. It is finely flavoured, complex, and taut in structure. Aroha, Te Muna Road Vineyard Martinborough is made from the best parcels of pinot noir grapes. These parcels are hand harvested, naturally fermented and matured in French oak before a final selection and bottling about 16 months after vintage. Aroha is a complex, serious pinot noir that rewards with cellaring. Le Sol, Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Hawkes Bay is a luscious, elegant, and exuberant wine made from old clone syrah grapes. The traditionally made wine shows heady aromas, luscious yet classical texture. Sophia, Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Hawkes Bay is a blend of the best merlot and cabernet franc parcels. It is classy, evocative, and richly textured. 48

label magazine autumn 2011

The Quarry, Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Hawkes Bay came about through the tenacity of a small group of local vignerons who saved the land from becoming a gravel quarry. This wine is made from cabernet sauvignon with small portions of merlot and cabernet franc. It is classically structured, deeply coloured, and ripe with fruit. The 2008 Craggy Range Prestige Collection continues a run of fantastic vintages. This vintage is almost sold out and wine lovers are already planning their selection from the 2009 vintage due to be released in June this year. Graggy Range viticulture and wine director Steve Smith says the 2008 red wines from the Gimblett Gravels bare some resemblance to the 2006 wines. “They are a little richer and finer in their youth. We have made less of these than in 2007, as we were careful to select only the finest parcels for Sophia, The Quarry, and Le Sol. The wine that really made a statement in 2008 is Aroha. It is the best pinot noir we have made at Craggy Range.”

Spendelove nightS Spendelove Bistro is one of the Gold Coast’s most popular dining venues by day and now lovers of fabulous food can enjoy the Spendelove experience by night. Book a table for dinner at Spendelove Bistro on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evening from 6pm and enjoy the ambience created by Tony Roberts and a menu of delicious dishes created by chef Luke Turner. Our party of four celebrated the end of the working week with a carafe of cocktails to share – great value at $35 – and tapas plates to share for starters. We chose bread with dips ($8) and two other plates at $12 each. The first $12 dish included crumbed artichoke with parmesan aioli and shaved prosciutto, the second featured aged goat cheese, beetroot and brioche. Other $14 options include tempura zucchini chips and crab salad or Greekstyle lamb with roasted yoghurt, lemon and fresh oregano. The $16 tapas plates include local barbecue prawns, chorizo, salsa verde, smoked chilli or beef tataki with Asian-style mushroom salad, fresh herb and ginger soy dressing. We chose main courses of confit duck ($33), the local crab pasta ($29), braised lamb ($34), and the tempura fish salad ($29). The flavoursome duck was served with a delicious leek, onion, and lemon thyme tart, candied orange zest, Persian-style fetta and fresh rocket leaves The crab pasta was a generous serve of perfectly cooked local spanner crab meat on angel hair pasta with semi dried tomato, baby zucchini, chilli and sangiovese ver juice. The braised lamb (chosen by our most critical companion) was declared to be perfect. The flavours of the tender meat were enhanced by homemade mushroom and blue cheese risotto. Tempura can often be a fairly ordinary batter but not at Spendelove. The batter was light and delicate, the reef fish fresh, and the sweet chilli and lime on the Asian-style leaf salad was a sensation. Our main courses were accompanied by a bottle of Mount Adam Unwooded Chardonnay ($36) and another of West Cape Howe Cabernet Sauvignon ($42) from the well-planned wine list. Spendelove offers a range of tempting desserts at $12 each but our appetites were more than satisfied with the tapas platters and main courses. Spendelove Bistro is ideal for a relaxed evening, the bistro has a charming ambience, and the food shows why chef Luke won awards from the moment he entered the industry. Tony and Rosa show how a professional establishment should be hosted. There is entertainment by vocalist Maddy Zenata most nights.

A new car is a few

clicks away Busy people don’t have time to trawl around checking out car dealerships, Grand Motors Toyota has the problem solved

Time is precious, we all try to squeeze as much into each day as possible so anything that saves time is of value. Grand Motors Toyota researched car buyers’ opinions on researching new and used vehicles and came up with the perfect solution – an online dealership. Grand Motors Toyota executive coordinator Lauren Pembroke says shopping in cyberspace suits most people. “We discovered that 88 per cent of people now research or buy cars from the internet and dealership websites,” Lauren says. “We designed an easy to navigate website and enquiry screen so people can view most of new and used cars on line. “It is a grand solution for busy people. Couples can check out the vehicles in the comfort of their own homes and all the family can have their say. Shopping on line takes the pressure off, people can choose from a vast range of vehicles without any input from sales people. “Our dedicated team responds to all enquires quickly. All new car prices include 12 month registration, Toyota’s fixed price servicing for three years or 60 thousand kilometres and a three-year factory warranty. “The website features all the demonstrator specials as well as new and used cars. Business people can check out the specific fleet section. People can quickly find information on spare parts and service,” Lauren says. Visit grandmotors.com.au to take the hassle out of car buying.

Survival strategies Recent natural disasters showed how quickly we could be caught in an appalling situation. An emergency plan can help save lives and make living with disaster a little easier. It may seem dramatic but people who have survived an emergency testify to the importance of planning. Emergencies include bushfires, floods, cyclones, storms, earthquakes, an influenza pandemic, and outbreaks of other diseases. ContaCtS Federal and State Government Departments have a list of emergency assistance phone numbers but 000 is the most important. This links with police, fire, and ambulance services. Make a list of emergency phone numbers; include State Emergency Services, relatives, and friends. Visit emergency.qld.gov.au for more information and useful phone numbers.

RESoURCES Find out how to turn off electricity, gas, and water. Store important documents and photographs in a fire resistant waterproof container. Scan and email documents to work or relatives, store copies on disk. Prepare an emergency survival kit. Check insurance cover is adequate and appropriate.

InfoRmatIon Involve the family by designating important tasks. These could include contacting each other, collecting children from school, checking on relatives and neighbours. Ask an out-of-town friend or relative to be an emergency contact. Find out about existing emergency plans in unit blocks, gated estates, schools, public buildings and the workplace. Local area plans may affect a street, suburb, or wider area.

EvaCUatIon Be prepared for evacuation. In some situations it is safer to stay inside, in others it is safer to leave a building or to evacuate an entire area. Follow instructions from emergency authorities. Meet at a safe distance from the emergency zone. There may be a designated meeting place in some locations, find out where it is and how to get there. Practice evacuation procedures and include a head count. Leave quickly or when directed by emergency authorities. Cellars and basement are not always safe. Ask emergency authorities for advice when making an emergency plan.

Allow for the needs of babies, the elderly, people with disabilities and pets. Keep the car fuel tank full. Plan a variety of safe driving routes. Turn off electricity, gas, and water. Lock all doors and windows. Take the emergency survival kit. Listen for warnings and safety advice on radio or television. Pay special attention to the standard emergency warning signal.

Carry-cage, bag, or box for other pets. Cat litter, old newspapers, or training mats. First aid supplies, medication, pet medical history, and vet contact. Allow for the special needs of some animals, birds, and reptiles. Visit the RSPCA website for more information. Animals should not be left behind unless it is impossible to move them. If pets must be left leave them indoors. If they must be left outside, don’t tie them up.

food and watER Natural dis asters or neighb ourhood emergencies may disrupt the supply of food and water. An emergency could prevent access to shops. Most households would quickly run out of food, especially if electricity and water supplies are affected. Most emergencies will extend over a few days at most but authorities recommend planning for a 14-day stay at home (possibly without water and electricity). Stock up on pantry essentials, and rotate products. Consider the needs of all household members; buy long lasting foods (tinned or dried), medical supplies, and bottled water. Include a back up power supply.

PEtS Include pets in the household emergency plan. Find out about emergency animal shelters, as most evacuation centres will not accept animals (except guide dogs). If an evacuation centre does accept animals, identification and proof of vaccination may be required. Add phone numbers for the vet, local animal welfare agency, pet information, and advisory services to the emergency contact list. Move animals to a safe place as early as possible. Late evacuation increases the risk to humans and animals.

PEt SURvIval kIt Several days supply of tinned or dry food, bowls for food and water. A dog lead (possibly a muzzle, as stressed dogs can be vicious).

Property and Risk prosperi t y Reduction

A home or investment property is usually the largest investment people make. Most people engage professional lawyers to ensure their purchase is secure but a growing band of home buyers are opting for do-it-yourself legals. Experts advise caution as property purchases are seldom straight forward. Respected Gold Coast lawyer Simon Bennett says the legalities of buying or selling property is often considered a routine exercise. “In reality it is anything but routine,” he says. “Simply processing data or managing it yourself is not the best way to handle what can become one of the trickiest sectors of law.
