DESIGNER Vision

A love of fashion, creativity and craft motivated Lisa Brown to found her own label which has evolved to perfectly capture the Gold Coast lifestyle of laid-back luxury. “I was working in a boutique and surrounded by beautiful clothes,” Lisa recalls. “You could say I had champagne tastes on a red cordial budget! The move to making my own clothes happened organically. I was hand-sewing bags, decorating them with shells. I had some sewing skills from High School, and my mother in law gave me some tips. “I made my first outfit from lovely silk and it went into the boutique window and sold instantly. From there, I just kept designing and creating.” 16years later, her eponymous brand is beloved by fashionistas internationally, prized for its wardrobe staples – blouses, pants and dresses that have become foundation pieces of the brand – complemented by seasonal collections. It hasn’t always been easy. Fashion is a competitive business and bears the brunt of economic downturns, such as the GFC and in 2020, Covid-19 and its impacts. “Thankfully, we produce our range locally which gives us more control. Our range is not mass produced, it’s handmade, exclusive, short runs, and the foundation pieces that people want. I buy fabric through local importers, which removes a lot of complications.” From a peak of 70 stores, Lisa Brown has reduced her distribution to 20 or so nationally, including her boutique at Mermaid Beach, studio at Miami and online sales. Over the years, the brand has evolved from four foundation styles to encompass more variety, more tailoring. “I have certainly honed my business skills along the way. One thing I regret 8 / SUMMER 2021

is not getting into social media when it first emerged. Instagram and Facebook are very effective sales tools. We now have a social media expert working with us. My daughters, who are 19 and 20, are always around to advise me. They don’t have ambitions to take up the reins, but they are great advisers.” In 2020, the spring/summer collection from Lisa Brown will feature “relaxed, low key lounge wear and special pieces for events and parties”.

Looking ahead to 2021, Lisa is anticipating visiting family over the border and welcoming them to her Gold Coast home. “When my sister visits from Sydney, she loves the vibe and the lifestyle here. There’s a brightness and a spark that’s unique to the Gold Coast.” More than anything, Lisa is hopeful for a return to optimism. “I’m hoping for more events, more to celebrate.”

“This year has been a challenge for everyone,” says Lisa. “I feel like we’re ready to emerge and celebrate with pretty, feminine pieces. I’ve revived prints in our new range. I’ve been working with fabrics with chevron prints and florals, and there will be the braiding on necklines and sleeves, folding and draping, which we’re known for.” Lisa draws inspiration from the natural elements, the sand, sky, sunsets, earthy tones and classic white. “Surfing is my outlet, my escape. I surf at Nobby Beach every day. I have to admit. I prefer it to designing!” Creative input also comes from boutiques with feedback direct from their customers. “I have a very close relationship with wholesalers,” she says. “I develop pieces from their requests for white linen, lace, dresses, blouses – whatever’s in demand.” Aside from the longevity of her designs, Lisa says the quality of the fabrics she chooses defines her brand. “We use real silk, beautiful prints and create versatile pieces, a mix of everything that will take you from beach to bar. You just change from espadrilles to heels.”

FEED

YOUR

FACE

Nourish your skin from the inside out HERE ARE DR JOANNA’S TOP 10 FOODS FOR SKIN 1. NUTS & SEEDS Nuts and seeds provide all the right kinds of fat that nourish our skin. They are also rich in the antioxidant vitamin E to combat free radical damage, which contributes to the ageing of your skin. 2. BARLEY Barley provides the antioxidant mineral selenium and good levels of several other vitamins and minerals that play roles in the growth of healthy skin, hair and nails.

Dr Joanna McMillan, Nutritionist and Vice president of The Australian Lifestyle Medicine Association

Spending money on skincare is wasted if you’re not taking care to feed your skin from the inside out. What you eat can make an enormous difference to how your skin looks and feels. Australian research has shown that a low GI diet can help reduce the symptoms of acne and improve the quality of your skin. This means eating more wholegrains and legumes, and reducing or cutting out processed foods. The knockon effect is that your overall health will benefit and not just your skin.

14 / SUMMER 2021

3. TEA Different teas contain different antioxidants, but they all have the potential for anti-ageing benefits. Green tea has even been shown to help rejuvenate skin cells. Tannins in tea can reduce your absorption of minerals in food however, so try to drink your tea between rather than with meals. 4. MUSSELS & OYSTERS High in protein, good sources of omega-3 fats and the clear front runners for providing zinc, a mineral essential for skin healing and preventing infections. Increased zinc can help acne and other skin conditions, but is also essential for all of us to maintain healthy radiant skin. 5. SALMON Oily fish such as salmon are fabulously rich in the essential omega-3 fats. These reduce inflammation and provide essential nourishment to the skin. To gain the benefits you need to eat it a minimum of twice a week. Other oily fish include sardines, mackerel, anchovies and trout.

6. CARROTS This humble veggie is one of the richest sources of beta-carotene, which acts both as an antioxidant in its own right and can be made into vitamin A, which repairs and maintains healthy skin. 7. DARK GREEN LEAFY VEG These are a daily must for maximum anti-ageing power. The darker the green the better as this usually indicates higher levels of antioxidants. Spinach, silverbeet, kale, rocket, watercress, Asian greens and dark green cabbage varieties all qualify. 8. AVOCADO Rich in the essential fats we need to nourish our skin and hair from the inside out and a great source of vitamin E to help protect the skin from ageing free radical and sun damage. 9. BERRIES They look delectable, they taste divine and they top the charts for antioxidant power. They are also rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant to combat the ageing process, but also necessary for the building of collagen, the protein that gives skin its elasticity, and strengthens capillaries to help reduce spider veins and easy bruising. 10. KIWI FRUIT We tend to think of citrus fruit as being the best sources of vitamin C, but in fact the kiwi fruit ranks second only to guava but is far more widely available and easy to eat. Vitamin C is essential to make the protein collagen, which gives skin its youthful elasticity, maintain hydration and prevent wrinkles. drjoanna.com.au

Frustrated with the lack of affordable, versatile and trans-seasonal clothing on offer, Jade Massaad set to work to invent her own. She harnessed her creative talent and launch ALKAM, a movement re-defining fashion for the modern human, with the desire to offer timeless, unfussy pieces, at an affordable price point, and with the aim of doing good to the planet and our people. “From pieces that are refined with a nod to Scandi-cool, to earrings that are reminiscent of grand jewellery of a bygone era, I’ve put a world of love into the designs, materials, cuts and colours to ensure that every woman loves each piece as much as I do,” says Jade.

Clothing Chemistry

ALKAM exists to create fashion, with a purpose.

alkam-store.com.au

The name, ALKAM is derived from the word alchemy, which means transforming raw materials into something great. As Jade explains “A seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination. ALKAM is also Arabic for alchemy, linking to my Lebanese heritage.” Her designs have certainly struck a chord with the market. On its launch day, the brand reaped $10,000 – this, during a global pandemic! “My focus is on quality basics and transseasonal products that can be worn year after year, shifting away from fast fashion trends and getting consumers to invest in good quality basics, whilst being affordable and conscious of the current financial climate in Australia. “Consumers are also shopping brands that have purpose, that stand for something, and are doing good for the planet and people. ALKAM’s philosophy is Less is More, both with product, and the impact on our planet. “From using satchels that are made of recycled materials, to planting a tree through One Tree Planted for every order over $150, and donating 100 percent of profits of our upcycled scrunchies to The Hunger Project, and employing 95 percent of women throughout our supply chain, it is important to for brands to be the driving force in sustainability as consumers look to brands to lead by example.” Looking ahead to 2021, Jade says she’s excited to expand the brand, launching a second capsule collection and securing wholesale distribution. “I’ve already got interest from luxury boutiques to stock the brand, however I don’t want to expand too quickly.

MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK • SEPTEMBER 2020 • No matter where you were in the World, the virtual front row seats were virtually accessible at this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Madrid, a three-day fashion spectacle showcasing Spanish designers, 10 to 13 September. Covid precautions were in place, from wearing masks and sanitising hands to maintaining social distancing. Among a plethora of incredible designers, established Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada sent rainbow coloured confection and white whimsy down the catwalk, with complementary headgear and accessories, while other designers experimented with colour, texture and sustainable fabrics. The Autumn/Winter Collections demonstrated the endurance and appeal of fashion, despite adversity, and there was an exuberance that was just the tonic for the challenges of difficult times. Smooth operator

Believe it or not, women shaving their faces is nothing new. The Japanese have always prized the shiny, smooth finish of freshly shaven skin in a process known as “Kao Sori”. Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were said to favour a close shave for the benefits of dewy, close-up ready, hairless perfection. Beyond the myth and legend, Dermaplaning (or Dermablading) was first described in an article published in The Journal of Dermatological Surgery and Oncology in the 1970s as a possible treatment for acne. It has since become popular around the world as women look for no-downtime procedures that deliver immediate skin benefits. Dermaplaning with a scalpel-like instrument by facialists, dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons removes vellus hair, or peach fuzz, and improves skin texture by removing rough, dry skin. It’s an effective method of exfoliating, brightening, and evening the skin, it’s also non-inflammatory and creates a smooth, even surface which is ideal for the application of skincare and make-up. Applied down the side of the face, along the top lip, across the forehead and neck, Dermaplaning takes around 30 to 45 minutes and costs around $100. Most people are candidates, especially if they have unwanted facial hair, fine lines, sun damage, dry or dull skin. The glow will last four to six weeks, and contrary to wives’ tales, the hair will not grow back course or darker. There are no real side effects, other than sensitivity to the sun, so it’s advised to wear sun protection and sunscreen to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation. 24 / SUMMER 2021

There is a proliferation of DIY options promoted by beauty blogger and vloggers which promise professional results. But according to Shannon Murdocca, Registered Nurse and Dermaplaning expert at Dr Portia Millar’s Dermatology, Mermaid Beach, these things are best left to the professionals. “You could accidentally cut small lumps and uneven sections of skin, which could lead to infection or scarring. As with all forms of exfoliation, it can cause redness or irritation. As Registered Nurses, trained in Dermaplaning, we use professional grade blades with the right techniques to ensure best results.” Results are dependent on your hair growth cycle, but usually last around six weeks. Some people schedule their treatments for every two months or ahead of a special occasion. More at drportiamillar.com.au

YOU’RE IN

4NB FOREVER

Hyperpigmentation, also known as sun, age or liver spots and melasma is usually attributed to a host of environmental and hormonal factors, including unprotected sun exposure, medications, and increased oestrogen levels. Offering a gentle and superior alternative to hydroquinone-based formulations, Enlighten by Evidence Skincare (ESK) uses a relatively new tyrosinase-inhibitor, 4-n-Butylresorcinol (4nB), to lighten skin and reduce future melanin deposits. 4nB has been proven to be the most effective depigmenting agent when compared to industry alternatives such as hydroquinone, arbutin, azelaic acid, and kojic acid, and produce faster results in as few as six weeks with less skin irritation. Formulated with sensitive skin types in mind, Enlighten combines 4nB with antioxidant multitasker, niacinamide (vitamin B3), to help regulate normal skin cell function, improve the skin’s moisture barrier, and reduce the transfer of melanin to keratinocytes where pigment is deposited. In addition to its hyperpigmentation benefits, Enlighten is also shown to help balance sebum production, increase collagen synthesis, and reduce postinflammatory redness. Suitable for daily and long-term use, Enlighten can be paired with other active ingredients, such as vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids, for enhanced depigmentation and overall skin rejuvenation. Hair today, gone tomorrow About one-third of women experience hair loss (alopecia) at some time in their lives, and among postmenopausal women, as many as two-thirds suffer hair thinning or bald spots. Due to society’s emphasis on hair as a symbol of beauty and youth, hair loss can severely affect a woman’s emotional well-being and quality of life.

Medications are the most common treatment for hair loss in women and may include products formulated with Minoxidil (such as Rogaine and other generic brands). This drug was initially introduced as a treatment for high blood pressure, but people who took it noticed that they were growing hair in places where they had lost it.

If you do have iron deficiency, a supplement may stop hair loss, however, if your iron level is normal, taking extra iron will cause side effects such as stomach upset and constipation.

There are many possible causes of hair loss in women including medical conditions, medications, and physical or emotional stress.

But minoxidil is not a miracle drug. While it can produce some new growth of fine hair in some women, it can’t restore the full density of the lost hair.

Androgenetic alopecia involves the action of the hormones called androgens, which are essential for normal male sexual development and have other important functions in both sexes, including sex drive and regulation of hair growth. The condition may be inherited and involve several different genes.

Anti-androgens can be prescribed by doctors together with an oral contraceptive for women of reproductive age.

Hair transplantation using a technique called follicular unit transplantation is yet another treatment. During this procedure, surgeons remove a narrow strip of scalp and divide it into hundreds of tiny grafts, each containing just a few hairs. Each graft is planted in a slit in the scalp created by a blade or needle. Hair grows naturally this way, in small clusters of one to four follicles. As a result, the graft looks better than the larger “plugs” associated with hair transplants of yesteryear.

Iron deficiency, particularly if you’re a vegetarian, have a history of anaemia or heavy menstrual bleeding, can be a cause of hair loss in some women.

If you notice unusual hair loss of any kind, it’s important to see your GP or a dermatologist, to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

italian essence Lauren Worthington and Ian von Hessenbeck are the creative force behind the label illuah. Lauren, who began a fashion label in Indonesia at the tender age of 15, travelled to Florence and undertook a fashion business course. It was there she met Ian, whose background includes stints at Vogue and YSL. “Ian was interested in my vision and ideas, so we decided to collaborate and start from scratch,” explains Lauren. “Ever since then we have worked together, working on all of the backend bits and pieces to ensure a stable launch. We finally launched our first collection at the beginning of this year with hopes to present our collection at New York fashion week and a showroom in Paris. Unfortunately, due to the virus we have been on hold with a lot of things, so we are currently working purely online and are aiming to open illuah up to the Australian market.” Illuah is a luxury women’s wear brand, based in Italy. “Our main focus is to create sustainable, high quality items and to eventually move into being a lifestyle and wellbeing brand with an educational platform,” continues Lauren. Positioning their Collections as “seasonless”, the duo has chosen not to follow the fashion calendar. “Personally, we believe fashion is moving out of its old ways and the future of fashion is less – less collections, less unnecessary production. We offer bespoke, tailored and hand-made options and do not produce until an order has been made, ensuring no waste. We have worked so hard to make fully sustainable items to ensure we are one hundred percent no doubt sustainable. It’s been a really long process because sustainability is still so new and it’s rare to find for instance fabric companies that have eco-friendly fabrics with low minimums. “We have discovered many interesting processes that we want to incorporate into future collections, such as using unique fibres including apple leather and rose silk. Also, creating jewellery out of bullet casings from Africa, old jewellery and coins. In the future we want to focus on recycling and up cycling to eliminate waste all together and we hope to grow our collections to shoes and other accessories. Eventually, Illuah will expand from fashion venturing into interior, wellness, general lifestyle products and more.” illuah.com 32 / SUMMER 202 1

What is the Peggy Sue story? Why did you start the brand?

Selfindulgence & Serenity Shanah Baxter and Alysha Hack, founders of lifestyle label, Peggy Sue spill the bath salts on their brand evolution and ethos.

Shanah: The Peggy Sue journey began in October 2016 when I had the idea of making soaps for some Christmas presents. Growing up with a mum in the skincare industry, I was armed with a knowledge on how to create the products and the best ingredients to use. The soaps I made were palm oil free, fun and pretty. I posted a picture of them online and people started messaging me to say they were keen to buy some for their Christmas shopping. I had a 6-month old daughter at the time whose name is Peggy. I made a quick Instagram page ‘Peggy Sue Soaps’ and in the lead up to Christmas 2016 I sold over 1,000 soaps through Instagram. I didn’t even have a website at the time! I then joined forces with Alysha, one of my good friends and now co-owner of Peggy Sue. Each and every product produced by Peggy Sue is carefully thought out and curated with love. Our range is kind on the planet, perfect for all skin types including sensitive, and is designed to not only nourish and care for skin but also help us all slow down, enjoy meaningful moments and focus on self-care. The Peggy Sue product range seems to use some pretty unique ingredients. Tell us about some of them. Alysha: We love using flower and fruit extracts in our products because they are all just overflowing with antioxidants and hold so many benefits for the skin. One of our favourite concoctions is our Intensive Eye Cream which has both red wine and coffee bean extract blended throughout. Two of life’s greatest gifts in one eye cream! Good for the tastebuds and your skin! Coffee extract is famous for its brightening and tightening abilities, so it’s perfect to help reduce circles around the eye area as well as reducing puffiness and minimising fine lines and wrinkles. The red wine extract is a super unique skincare ingredient that also boasts a wealth of benefits. It helps boost the skin’s collagen production which is a protein that holds your skin cells together.

34 / SUMMER 2021

It also keeps the skin around the eye area strong and healthy while boosting elastic fibres and aids in slowing down the ageing process. What encouraged you to offer refills for your products and what percentage of your products are available as refills? Shanah: Refillable skincare shreds a huge amount off the carbon footprint of our beauty regimes. While it can be a challenging initiative as the refills need to be packaged in plastic for the health and safety of our customers, the refill pouches contain 90 percent less plastic than the lid of the glass bottle. Taking this into account along with the energy and transport required to create a new bottle, creating the sealed refill pouch uses a fraction of the carbon footprint required to produce an entirely new bottle. We also send an envelope with each refill order to our customers which allows the customer to easily return their empty refill pouch to us so we can send them off to be repurposed and ensure they don’t end up in landfill. To further help the process we offer free stainless-steel funnels to help our customers refill their bottles with ease. We can proudly say that 95 percent of the Peggy Sue range comes with refill options. We hope that when Australian’s consider the carbon footprint of their skincare regime, they opt to switch to Peggy Sue to partner with us as we fight the war on waste. What’s next for Peggy Sue? Alysha: We want Australians to focus on and prioritise self-care while showing compassion and care for the world around them. Anyone who subscribes to this philosophy is a part of our Peggy Sue Crew and we welcome and embrace them with open arms. We recently opened our first flagship store in Sydney and would love to open more stores and spread the Peggy Sue philosophy on a grass roots level across Australia. If Peggy Sue can become a way for all our beautiful customers to connect to themselves and the world around them in a meaningful way, then we feel our hard work is rewarded.

TO ASIA, WITH LOVE By Hetty McKinnon

Cook, food writer and founder of Arthur Street Kitchen, Hetty McKinnon described her new book, ‘To Asia, With Love’ as her “homecoming, a joyous return to the humble, yet deeply nurturing flavours and meals of my childhood as a Chinese girl born in Australia”. It is also a celebration of the exciting and delicious possibilities of modern Asian cooking. Recipes range from the traditional - salt and pepper eggplant, red curry laksa, congee, a perfectly simple egg, pea and ginger fried rice - to Hetty’s uniquely modern interpretations, such as buttery miso vegemite noodles, stir-fried salt and vinegar potatoes, cacio e pepe udon noodles and grilled wombok caesar salad with wonton crackers. Whether it’s a banh mi turned into a salad, a soy-saucepowered chocolate brownie or a rainbow guide to eating dumplings by the season, this is Asian home cooking unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Dumplings and other small things

Crispy tofu and coriander balls

MAKES 15 GLUTEN FREE

350 g extra-firm tofu, well drained ½ cup coriander leaves, finely chopped 2 shallots, finely chopped 2.5 cm piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped ½ teaspoon five-spice powder 2 large eggs, beaten 60 g (½ cup) potato starch or cornflour vegetable, sunflower or other high-temperature neutral oil sea salt and white pepper

At Kung Tak Lam Shanghai Vegetarian Cuisine restaurant, a looming high-rise restaurant overlooking Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay, I sampled a dish of ‘tofu balls’ that felt intensely familiar, almost personal, sparking a faint memory of a childhood food experience. While I can’t quite recall where or when I’d previously eaten these fried tofu balls, it felt important to me, significant enough that this dish now regularly occupies my thoughts. My version pairs tofu with coriander and five-spice powder, a happy marriage of aromatic flavours. The mixture is quite wet so be assertive when shaping them (or use a small ice-cream scoop to help form a ball). The potato starch gives them a nice crispy finish. Place the tofu in a large bowl and mash it up with a fork. Add the coriander, shallot, ginger, five-spice powder and egg, and mix until well combined. Stir in the potato starch or cornflour and season well with sea salt and white pepper. Shape into 15 golf ball–sized balls. For the five-spice aioli, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. Pour about 3 cm of oil into a small, deep heavy-based saucepan and heat over medium–high heat until the oil is hot (test with a wooden spoon – if the oil sizzles, it is ready). Drop two or three balls into the oil and fry for 2 minutes on each side, turning regularly until the balls are golden all over. Remove with tongs or a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Continue until all the balls are cooked. Serve the tofu balls with the aioli and lemon wedges on the side.

1 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve Five-spice aioli 125 g (½ cup) vegan mayonnaise (or regular whole egg) ½ teaspoon five-spice powder 1 teaspoon sriracha or chilli sauce 1 garlic clove, grated

Veganise Replace the eggs with flax egg. To do this, combine 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds with 2 ½ tablespoons of water, then rest for 5 minutes. This will replace one egg, so double the quantities for these tofu balls.

Lucky noodles

Sesame rice noodles with ‘everything oil’ and charred broccoli

SERVES 4 VEGAN AND GLUTEN FREE

300 g dried thick rice noodles 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil 135 g (½ cup) tahini 1 garlic clove, grated extra-virgin olive oil 750 g (about 2 heads) broccoli, cut into florets 2–3 tablespoons Everything Oil (see page 25) 2 shallots, finely sliced handful of coriander leaves sea salt and black pepper

Tahini may not seem like an obvious sauce for noodles, but it is not as unusual as it sounds. Sesame noodles is a popular Sichuan dish, traditionally made with Chinese sesame paste and usually served cold. The Chinese version of sesame paste is similar to tahini, but is made with sesame seeds that are deeply toasted before grinding, resulting in a deep brown paste that is slightly thicker, with a consistency akin to peanut butter. Since tahini is much more accessible and a pantry staple, it is my preferred ingredient for this quick weeknight dish. I like my sesame noodles with a hefty amount of heat, and the complex flavours of my ‘everything oil’ work perfectly here. Make this dish your own by adding whatever roasted vegetables you have on hand.

Not too sweet

Mango pudding

SERVES 4 VEGAN AND GLUTEN FREE

As a child, my version of a candy store was the desserts trolley at yum cha. While I didn’t have a sweet tooth, it just felt magical to see the artistically crafted sweets being wheeled from table to table. I always wanted to be the one pushing the trolley – I imagined myself a skilled server-slash-salesperson, confidently dishing out plates of multi-coloured jelly cubes decorated with little toothpick flags, wobbly black sesame rolls, glutinous rice balls (mochi) blanketed in coconut and, of course, egg tarts. Mango pudding is another star of the dessert trolley, luminously orange, topped with evaporated milk and light as a feather to eat. This recipe is vegan, using agar agar powder (a jelly-like substance obtained from red algae) to achieve the gelatinous consistency. You’ll find agar agar at specialty grocers or health-food stores.

Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil and cook the rice noodles according to the packet instructions until al dente, about 6–7 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water, then drain again. Add the sesame oil and toss to coat the noodles.

500 g cubed mango (from about 3 ripe mangoes), plus 1 extra mango

Set aside one-quarter of the cubed mango and 3 tablespoons of the coconut milk.

400 ml can coconut milk

Place the remaining cubed mango, remaining coconut milk and maple syrup in a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth.

Whisk together the tahini, garlic and 125–185 ml (½–¾ cup) of room-temperature water until smooth, with a pourable consistency. Season with sea salt and black pepper.

1 teaspoon agar agar powder

80 ml (⅓ cup) maple syrup

Heat a large frying pan or chargrill pan over high heat. When hot, drizzle with olive oil, add the broccoli florets and season with sea salt and black pepper. Cook, turning regularly, for 5–7 minutes until charred and just tender.

Pour the blitzed mango into a saucepan and whisk in the agar agar powder. Place over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, whisking constantly, until the agar agar has dissolved and the mixture has thickened. This should take about 5–7 minutes. Cut the extra mango into slightly smaller cubes and divide among four bowls. Pour the mango and coconut mixture over the top and place in the fridge for 2 hours to set. Just before serving, top with the reserved mango cubes and drizzle with the reserved coconut milk.

In a large bowl, combine the noodles, charred broccoli and tahini sauce, and drizzle with olive oil. Season with sea salt and black pepper. Transfer the noodles to individual bowls and drizzle with as much (or as little) everything oil as you like. Top with shallot and coriander. Eat at room temperature.

Substitute rice noodles: ramen, udon or egg noodles Everything Oil: chilli oil, Rayu (see page 26) or chilli flakes broccoli: kale, cauliflower or brussels sprouts tahini: peanut butter

SUMMER 2021 / 43

IN FULLB Whether she’s gliding above the stage on a trapeze, astride a giant Cherry Chapstick, or demurely attending a charity event in a giant pink tutu with a tiara, Katy Perry, hailed by Glamor magazine as “The Queen of Quirk”, is as expressive with her image as she is with her music. Born in Santa Barbara, California, the daughter of Pentecostal pastors Mary and Maurice, Katy Perry, real name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, was singing in the Church choir from an early age. She was passionate about pursuing a career in music and attended lessons for a while after High School before her voice caught the attention of rock artists Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp from Nashville, Tennessee, who took her under their wing to polish her writing skills and guitar technique. Changing her name to Katy Perry to avoid confusion with actress, Kate Hudson, she moved to LA and was signed to her first label in 2004, aged 20. By 2008, and a few labels later, Perry released her first single with Capitol, “I Kissed a Girl”, as the lead single from One of the Boys, which went on to enjoy international chart-topping success and a slew of Awards for Perry. Part of her charm and key to her appeal is her chameleon-like qualities and her appetite for collaborating, experimenting and trying different styles, both in music and in her fashion choices. Describing her style as “Lucille Ball meets Bob Mackie”, Perry says there’s more to her outlandish costumes than meets the eye. “It’s about innuendo. I want everybody to get the joke, but I want them to think about it for a minute.”

BLOOM Professionally, Perry has co-written and recorded with artists the calibre of John Mayer, Snoop Dog, Nicki Minaj, Zedd, Skip Marley (Bob’s grandson), Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean, Missy Elliott and Kanye. She has also written dozens of hit songs for the likes of Selena Gomez, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora. Growing up, Perry’s musical influences were diverse; from gospel singer, Amy Grant to Freddie Mercury of Queen and the Beach Boys quintessential West Coast sounds, along with Madonna and Alanis Morissette. In 2010, at the height of her popularity, touring the world, bathing in the limelight of Awards, smash hits and recordbreaking sales, Perry met and married British comedian, Russell Brand. The unlikely pair, with a decade’s age difference, were a media delight, appearing loved-up and outrageous at fashion shows, galas and nightspots. Brand ended their14month union, which Perry described as “a tornado”, with a perfunctory text announcing he was divorcing her. “I was in love with him when I married him,” Perry said. “He’s a very smart man. Hysterical in some ways. Until he started making jokes about me and he didn’t know I was in the audience, because I had come to surprise him at one of his shows. “I have to claim my own responsibility in things. I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie,” she said, referring to the documentary “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” “He wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times, strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she continued. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. But I have moved on from that.” What followed was a brief and intense fling with John Mayer, a creative

surge, freakishly successful albums, voicing Smurfette in the 2011 Smurfs movie and extremely lucrative gigs on the judging panels of The X Factor UK and American Idol. Completely content, focusing on her career and touring, Perry met Orlando Bloom at the Golden Globes after-party in 2016 and began dating immediately. After a year, they split, which caused Perry considerable heartbreak (and an outpouring of songs), only to reconcile five months later. The couple announced their engagement in February 2019, after Orlando proposed on a Valentine’s Day helicopter ride over LA. Both burnt from the pain of divorce, the couple decided to “take things one step at a time” and “build a strong emotional foundation” before actually making the commitment of marriage. But fate and nature intervened and on August 26, Perry and Bloom welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom into the world, announced her arrival via UNICEF, the organisation they serve as Goodwill Ambassadors. “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” the proud parents said in their statement. It’s been a fruitful few months for Perry. She released “Smile”, the title track of her new album, which was launched by EMI Recorded Music Australia on August 14. The life-affirming new single is brimming with gratitude and suggests that setbacks often turn out to be blessings in disguise. “I wrote this song when I was coming through one of the darkest periods of my life,” says Katy. “When I listen to it now, it’s a great reminder that I made it through. It’s three minutes of energising hopefulness.” Smile has been declared “quintessentially Perry: buoyant, playful, neon pop”. RIFF Magazine described it as “the album that meets the moment of the age we live in. A fitting celebration of strength, pain and individuality under dire circumstances.” In the lead-up to its release, Katy shared several songs from the album, including “Daisies,” “Never Really

Over,” “What Makes A Woman” and “Harleys In Hawaii”. Since its release in May, the track “Daisies” has amassed more than 125 million combined global streams. While in quarantine, Perry has won acclaim for the wide variety of performances she has given of Daisies, including the “American Idol” season finale, the launch of the 2020 “Good Morning America” Concert Series and the “Can’t Cancel Pride: Helping LGBTQ+ People in Need” livestream. Since Katy Perry’s Capitol Records/EMI Music debut in 2008 with One of the Boys, she has racked up a cumulative 46 billion streams alongside worldwide sales of over 45 million adjusted albums and 135 million tracks. Views of her 2013 video “Roar” recently surpassed three billion – making Katy the first female artist to reach this milestone. Katy was also the first female artist to have four videos surpass a billion views each. Her 2015 Super Bowl performance is the highest-rated in the event’s history. She is one of only five artists in history to have topped 100 million certified units with their digital singles – and the first-ever Capitol Records recording artist to join the elite US RIAA 100 Million Certified Songs club. Aside from being one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, Katy is an active advocate of many philanthropic causes. In 2013, Katy was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Her aim is to highlight the needs of the world’s most vulnerable children, empowering girls and supporting adolescents living with HIV/AIDS, as well as raising awareness for UNICEF’s emergency relief efforts. For her advocacy, she was awarded with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award in 2016. “All the children I met have incredible dreams. We have to help them fight for those dreams,” she said during a visit to Vietnam. “Investing in the most disadvantaged to give them a fair chance in life is not only the right thing to do, it is the best way to break the cycle of poverty and drastically improve children’s health, education and well-being.” SUMMER 2021 / 45

Weight-loss is just one of the many benefits of the innovative, new, personalised program from Weightloss Solutions Australia. The 12 Weeks to Wellness Program takes an holistic approach to weightloss and a life-long readjustment to nutrition, fitness, improving your relationship with your body. But despite being a conveniently compartmentalised program encompassing medication, nutrition, exercise and psychology, this is not a “one size fits all” package. “It’s a collaborative program that fills a gap in the market,” explains Felicity Cohen, CEO of Weightloss Solutions Australia. “In 2020, we’ve all struggled through ‘iso’, perhaps being more sedentary, coping with stress through indulgence and comfort food. In the 12 Weeks to Wellness Program, people from all walks of life will find practical and proven methods of addressing concerns and adopting different habits and strategies to build resilience and create a pathway to being healthy, fit and well.” For 20 years, Felicity Cohen and her team of health professionals at Weightloss Solutions Australia (WLSA) have pioneered a multifaceted approach to supporting clients on their path to well-being. At the start of October, Felicity and her team were honoured with three prestigious 2020 Stevie Awards for Women in Business: a Gold Stevie Award in the category of Female Entrepreneur of the Year and two Bronze Stevie Awards, the first for Female Entrepreneur of the Year in Asia, Australia or New Zealand and the second for Most Innovative Company of the Year. “Using our multi-disciplinary team support, we tailor a holistic plan to suit each person and ensure it’s effective and sustainable. We have GPs, RNs, Dietitians, Psychologists and Physical Therapists on our team – all involved in the process which creates new pathways to a total lifestyle and behavioural change. “People are more aware than ever before of the value of their health. We know being overweight is a risk that increases our chances of disease. “A massive amount of work has gone into the 12 Weeks to Wellness Program,” Felicity continues. “It’s not 46 / SUMMER 2021

just reliant on medicine, an operation, or a diet plan, it’s based on 360-degree, wraparound guidance and support towards a long-term outcome.” Best of all, it’s suitable for everybody and online modules and telehealth options mean people from all over Australia can access the expertise of the entire WLSA team. “It’s all about prevention, longevity and maintaining health, mobility and function,” says Felicity, whose own experience with ageing relatives motivated her to research and develop strategies patients can use to achieve and maintain health and well-being into later life. “The program suits everybody, from those wishing to regain stamina, return to fitness, shift 10kg to those wishing to make a total lifestyle change and drop 20kg or more.” The process begins with consultation with WLSA doctors. “We have two GPs on our team who assess patients on their eligibility for medication. There is an entirely new generation of medications that work to supress appetite and manage addiction, with very few side effects, allowing patients the space and time to work with

professionals and start a new way of life. Working with Nurses, Psychologists and Dietitians, patients are fully supported throughout their journey, with online modules, worksheets, meal plans and an interactive app, along with emails, regular phone calls and in person/ virtual appointments to keep on track. Leslie Hartley is one of the Psychologists involved in delivery of the 12 Weeks to Wellness Program. She says the aim is to “provide the necessary tools and support in helping patients improve their relationship with food and also with their bodies. They can gain valuable insights around issues and behaviours that may have negatively impacted their weight over time”. Leslie says her role is one of assessment, preparation, guidance and support - to get to know the patient, prepare them for the journey ahead and then to support them through that journey. “I try and give them a good understanding of what to expect and some tools to help them along the way in reaching their goals. As with all of our programs, patients have unlimited access to our support throughout their program. I love my job; it’s always very rewarding to constantly see such great results and

I love helping people change their lives – not just their image and self-confidence, but also their quality of life. That’s the best reward.

positive outcomes in people’s lives.” Registered Nurse, Caroline Henzell works with patients to provide answers to general questions, as well as specific queries about medication, dosage, side effects and their tailored treatments. “I’m available whenever patients need me at various touch points, including via phone, in person and via phone and email. While it’s a completely personalised program, people know they’re not on their own.” Caroline joined WLSA from a background working in Hospitals, detox units, a stint with the Queensland Police Service and as a School Nurse, specialising in drug and alcohol addiction. “My expertise is in helping people to overcome their difficulties to make a meaningful, long-term change in their habits. We are not here to judge. We understand that people have been stuck at home, maybe they’re anxious, lost their jobs, income affected and stressed. They might be eating cheap fast food and not

48 / SUMMER 2021

getting out as much as they used to. “Most people come to us frustrated and exasperated. They’re ready to make changes, but they don’t have the tools. Once they realise there’s no quick fix, we can help them with the strategies to change their behaviours and work with them on a program that sets them up for success.” Isabella Maimone is one of five Dietitians at WLSA. She acknowledges there are so many barriers to weightloss. “Such as time, money, lack of resources and information. That’s where our guidance comes in.” Isabella, who has experience the challenges of balancing a healthy lifestyle, followed her own path to health and well-being through studying nutrition. “So many people have a history of yo-yo dieting, or crash dieting with supplements or starving themselves. That’s not the answer.” Working with patients on meal plans and diet, Isabella meets with patients

every fortnight, interwoven with online modules and the app that lets consultants track a patient’s progress. There are also workshops, seminars and cooking events to equip patients with the skills they need to carry them through the various stages of their lives. “This holistic approach is vital,” she says. “We emphasise that people are much more than a number. Very often, people find themselves in a rut, whether that’s the result of a negative experience, hormonal changes, divorce, finances. They benefit from a team that’s on their side. “I love helping people change their lives – not just their image and selfconfidence, but also their quality of life. That’s the best reward.” Just in its first weeks, Felicity Cohen is heartened by the take-up of the 12 Weeks to Wellness Program. “Feedback has been very positive. Patients are finding it accessible, achievable, affordable and we are confident it leads to life-long, sustainable change.

Using our multi-disciplinary team support, we tailor a holistic plan to suit each person and ensure it’s effective and sustainable.

Lift your mood Most people know yoga as the preferred practice of celebrities and the health conscious. But the ancient practice of yoga could provide a sustainable exercise alternative for thousands of people isolating at home. New research from the University of South Australia, shows that movement-based yoga can significantly improve mental health. The world first study conducted in partnership with the Federal University of Santa Maria, UNSW Sydney, Kings College London and Western Sydney University found that movement-based yoga improves the mental health of people living with a range of mental disorders, with the benefits being incremental with the amount of yoga they practiced.

52 / SUMMER 202 1

Lead researcher, UniSA PhD candidate, Jacinta Brinsley says it’s a welcome and timely finding given strict social distancing measures that limit exercise options. “As self-isolation escalates and people find themselves working from home and unable to physically catch up with their friends and family, we’re likely to see more people feel lonely and disconnected,” Brinsley says. “Exercise has always been a great strategy for people struggling with these feelings as it boosts both mood and health. But as gyms and exercise classes of all kinds are now closed – even jogging with a friend is strongly discouraged – people are looking for alternatives, and this is where yoga can help.

“Our research shows that movement-based yoga improved symptoms of depression (or improved mental health) for people living with a range of mental health conditions including anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and major depression. So, it’s very good news for people struggling in times of uncertainty.” Researchers defined movementbased yoga as any form of yoga where participants are physically active at least 50 percent of the time, that is forms of yoga that emphasize holding poses and flowing through sequences of poses. Assoc Prof Simon Rosenbaum says “Our results have significant implications and demonstrate that you don’t necessarily need to go for a jog to benefit from movement.”

There has never been a better time to discover the bounties of Queensland, particularly as borders are slated to open over the summer. Made up of 13 captivating destinations, Queensland is like no other place on earth. From the endless coastlines to the great outback expanses, the world famous Great Barrier Reef and array of rainforests, the state is a giant living and breathing postcard waiting to be explored. If you’re keen on driving, there are scenic western routes through rich

Queensland

farmland and dramatic mountains, or a true taste of Australiana in authentic bush towns bursting with attractions that range from dinosaur remains and lava tubes to incredible rivers inviting visitors to quench their thirst, take a dip or paddleboard. Further north just off the coast is the natural wonder of The Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef. In terms of “new”, FNQ abounds with innovations and experiences to delight visitors. The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) off the coast of Townsville provides inspiration for reef and ocean conservation. The only

Underwater Art Museum in the Southern Hemisphere, MOUA has four intriguing installations located at The Strand on the city foreshore, Palm Island, some 65km out from the mainland, and picturesque Arthur Bay at Magnetic Island. The largest installation is the John Brewer Reef Coral Greenhouse, a monumental underwater garden shed built on the pristine outer Great Barrier Reef and offering world class dive and snorkel experiences. The installations are designed by world renowned underwater sculptor Jason De Caires Taylor, the creator of MUSA in Mexico and Museo Altanico in Spain.

Beckons 40 nautical miles from Airlie Beach, moored offshore at Hardy Reef, Reefsuite invites guests to retreat to the privacy of the Great Barrier Reef and wake up to marine life. Priced from $749 per person, the overnight underwater stay includes all meals and beverages plus a dinner under the stars and an optional private guided snorkelling tour. The tourist favourite, Heart Island, close to Hamilton Island, has been reimagined as a snorkelling destination, offering a split-level pontoon in the middle of the Heart Reef Lagoon and available to just six people at a time. Exclusive to guests of Hamilton Island, the tour at $999 includes a scenic 30-minute

helicopter ride over the iconic Heart Reef, snorkelling, snacks and a glass bottom boat experience. Then there’s Wilson Island, now open to campers. At just 5.4 hectares in size, Wilson Island is a micro bump on the most magnificent reef in the world. Located a 40-minute slow boat ride from Heron Island Resort on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Wilson has welcomed nine glamping tents and one central long-house for up to 18 guests at a time. The island is so remote that every visit comes with a digital detox opening up time for an old-fashioned novel, good conversations, fresh food, rest, nature and sunshine. Prices start

from $950 per couple per night. And just down the highway from the Gold Coast, Australia Zoo is celebrating 50 years! In 1970, the Irwin family opened a reptile park at Beerwah. Today, that park is Australia Zoo, a mega drawcard for tourists and the inspiration for Crikey, It’s the Irwins, a television series broadcast on Animal Planet to some 220 million people globally. Australia’s best known eco-warriors are poised to launch an $8 million Australia Zoo Wildlife Camping Experience which will add yet another dimension to the Australia Zoo experience. Where there’s a Will, there’s a way. What’s the difference between an enduring power of attorney and a will, and do I need them both? Most Australians understand the need and importance for a will. It is the legal document which governs what happens to your estate upon your death. The will appoints an executor who is tasked with administration of the remainder of the terms of you will. This often includes the collection of all your assets, payment of your liabilities and distribution of the balance in accordance with your wishes as set out in that document. A party who fails to have a will generally dies intestate which means that their family and friends are left to tidy up the mess which has been left behind. But if you have a will why do you need an enduring power of attorney

62 / SUMMER 2021

and what does it actually do? An enduring power of attorney allows the person to appoint a party (often a husband or wife) who they trust implicitly to stand in the shoes of that person and have the ability to do for that person what they could lawfully do for themselves. These powers generally have two categories being financial matters and then personal and health matters. A person may determine if they grant one or both of these powers to their attorney. Further, they can limit the occasions all the scope of the power they are giving to their attorney. With respect to financial matters the person may specify when these powers will begin, and generally with personal and health these powers will begin only the person granting the power has lost the ability to make decisions

on their own behalf. It is a very powerful document and there are some overriding consideration that should be had for a power of attorney is granted, however for the majority of people, this power of attorney will be a key document during their lifetime, whereas a will, will only come into effect once a party has died. These are important considerations for everyone. Specialised legal advice should be sought as to the best will, power of attorney combination for you. At OMB solicitors we have a specialised estate planning team who can provide advice and guidance to you. OMB Solicitors Level 1, 9 Seabank Lane, Southport, Tel (07 5555 0000. omb.com.au

PETS IN A PANDEMIC

Pets are hugely beneficial to mental and physical health. Research shows that pets can lower blood pressure, boost mood, and reduce anxiety.

RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty said “I think people realise just how much comfort animals bring to our lives. In times of stress they help us to remain calm. More and more these days we see animals being used in all forms of therapy and the benefits they bring are almost immeasurable. Below are some tips for you and your pet that will hopefully be of use.” The Essentials. Make sure that you have at least two weeks’ worth of food for your pet. If they are on any medications or a prescription veterinary diet have at least a month’s stock of both. For cats, ensure you have enough cat litter and if your dog does have to stay inside with you for a few weeks consider having enough poo bags. To keep your pet healthy, have at least a month of parasite prevention.

Buddy Up. Contact and designate someone to look after you pet if needed. Make sure they can access your house and know your pets and their requirements. If your pet is on medications have instructions on what and when, and to make it easier have at least two weeks of medications pre dispensed into labelled pill organizers. Have a call list which includes your vet and boarding facilities. Pet Documents and ID. Make sure your microchip registration details are up to date and consider a secondary form of identification for your pet such as a collar and tag. Have a full list of emergency contacts including yours and family and friends’ phone numbers and email addresses. Emergency Accommodation. Research and contact local boarding

or pet minding facilities near you in the event that your pet requires emergency accommodation. Ask them to email you their boarding paperwork so this can be prefilled out and also send them any vaccination or registration paperwork in advance so that even a stranger could get them to safe accommodation. Isolation Enrichment. If you and your pet do need to self-isolate make sure you keep their mind and body active. For cats, at least 30 minutes of one on one playtime, new toys and indoor cat grass for nibbling. For dogs that are usually walked, lots of one on one games, rotate dog toys and have a stock of new ones, play hide and seek, teach them new tricks or give them toys with treats inside. Steps to Chill

Feeling anxious in certain situations can help us avoid danger; it’s how we’ve evolved to keep ourselves safe. Even if you are not typically an anxious person, it’s common to feel some anxiety during periods of change or uncertainty.

Anxiety can be channelled into positive actions. Research shows that people who worry are more likely to take measures to avoid or solve a situation. However, sometimes anxiety can be unhelpful. Here are some practical ways that you can keep feelings of anxiety at bay if you feel overwhelmed. 1. Channel your anxious energy into action: get informed, plan, and prepare Instead of worrying, try your best to focus on what’s under your control. Equip yourself with the facts from trusted sources. Follow government advice and make a plan for yourself and your family. 2. Limit or avoid unhelpful media and misinformation The more we read and hear about it, the more frightening it becomes, and the less chance we have to distract ourselves and do

things that can take our minds off it. Although it might be tempting to keep informed, or difficult to escape, limiting your exposure to media, news, and social media about coronavirus will help quell panic. 3. Cut down or stop the behaviours that are fuelling your anxiety There are certain actions, when performed frequently, that can fuel anxiety about health and safety. Being aware of these behaviours, understanding how they’re making you feel, and replacing them with more helpful coping strategies can alleviate disproportionate feelings of anxiety. 4. Stay focused on the here and now, taking each day step by step Try to focus on the here and now- not the past and not the future. Live in the moment and take one day at a time. 5. Be aware of negative thoughts and don’t give them too much power Just because we’re thinking something, doesn’t always mean it’s true. When you notice yourself worrying a lot, take a step back, and try to let worries pass by without focussing on them too much.

6. Look after your body Get enough sleep, exercise, eat well, avoid smoking, excessive alcohol and drugs. This will help protect your mental health and immune system. 7. Stay connected with others It can make a huge difference when we share our worries with others, and connect with people who are supportive. Try to stay connected to supportive people in your life so you feel less isolated and lonely. 8. Help others, be kind and compassionate When we help other people, it can also make us feel better. 9. Take a breath When you feel overwhelmed take a few slow, deep breaths to help you calm down. Try other things that help you relax such as a walk or listening to music. 10. If you’re feeling like you’re not coping, get professional advice It’s ok to ask for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, seek professional support. Psychological therapies can be done online, or remotely via phone or videoconferencing, and are an excellent option if you’re in self-isolation, or worried about going to a clinic. POWER TORQUE The New Land Rover Defender represents 70 years of innovation and improvement; honouring the vehicle’s history for rugged solidity while thoroughly remaining a Defender for the 21st century. The new Land Rover Defender is here, with advanced new power trains, new model specification and more options, building on the iconic 4x4 that forged our appetite for off-road adventures. The Defender is new from the ground up, with an advanced off-road architecture, a more modern interior, and a range of up-to-date engines under the hood. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director says it is “respectful of its past but is not harnessed by it”. “This is a new Defender for a New Age,” he says. “The new Defender has had to be designed for a world that has changed beyond recognition from when the original was created.” A distinctive silhouette makes the new Defender instantly recognisable, with minimal front and rear overhangs providing excellent approach and departure angles. Land Rover’s new purpose-engineered D7X (for extreme) architecture is based on a lightweight aluminium monocoque construction to create the stiffest body structure the brand has ever produced. Three times stiffer than traditional body-on-frame designs, it has been engineered to withstand Land Rover’s Extreme Event Test procedures and provides the perfect foundations for the fully independent air or coil sprung suspension while supporting the latest electrified powertrains.

Configurable Terrain Response, which allows drivers to fine-tune a range of settings to suit the conditions more precisely than ever before. A new Wade programme optimises the vehicle for fording – giving customers even more confidence when tackling flooded roads and tracks. Defender has a world-class maximum wading depth of up to 900mm. Inside, the highly functional cabin design is marked out by exposed structural elements and 21st century technologies, including the state-of-the-art new Pivi Pro infotainment system. The next-generation touchscreen is more intuitive and user-friendly, requiring fewer inputs to perform frequently used tasks, while its always-on design guarantees almost instant responses. In addition, Software-OverThe-Air technology, with 14 individual modules capable of receiving remote updates, ensures Defender customers always benefit from the latest software, wherever they are in the world. For 2021 Model Year an advanced new PlugIn Hybrid (PHEV) model – the P400e – is key to Defender’s expanded appeal. Combining a powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and 105kW electric motor, the 404PS P400e delivers substantial torque alongside low running costs, with CO2 emissions of just 74g/km and combined economy of 85.3mpg (3.3l/100km). It will run in all-electric mode with zero tailpipe emissions for up to 27 miles (43km), including off-road where the immediate torque from the electric motor makes Defender even more capable.

Defender is also the first Land Rover to feature

68 / SUMMER 2021

New X-Dynamic specification is available on both Defender 90 and 110, offering a selection of exterior and interior design elements which reflect the 4x4’s immense capability and ensures it stands out from the crowd\\ Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 300PS and a 105kW electric motor powered by a 19.2kWh battery, the P400e provides a combined output of 404PS from its advanced PHEV powertrain, delivering refined performance and responses, but with an all-electric range of 27 miles (43km). The Defender P400e produces as little as 74g/km of CO2 and is capable of up to 85.3mpg (3.3l/100km). Alongside impressive fuel economy and emissions figures, the Defender P400e has a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds) and will reach a top speed of 130mph (209km/h). The PHEV powertrain brings superior offroad capabilities too. The linear torque delivery enabled by the electric motor and smooth, powerful petrol engine combine for ultimate flexibility, working seamlessly with the advanced systems that make Defender the toughest and most durable Land Rover. Defender offers high and low range off-road capabilities in full electric mode, alongside delivering superior off-road geometry for a plug-in hybrid vehicle, ensuring Defender’s immense capability is shared across all engine and powertrain options. The range comprises Defender, S, SE, HSE, First Edition and top-of-the-range Defender X. Customers will be able to personalise their vehicle in more ways than any previous Land Rover, with four Accessory Packs.

A choice of advanced petrol and cleaner diesel engines ensure the Defender has the power, control and efficiency for any environment, while a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain will join the range next year providing the prospect of silent EV-only progress. New Defender features permanent four-wheel drive, a twin-speed automatic gearbox, a maximum towing capability of 3,720kg* and a maximum static roof load of 300kg, making it the perfect companion for overland adventures.

rounder on-road and an unrivalled expert off-road.

Alongside the new P400e, Land Rover’s powerful and efficient in-line six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine joins the range. Strong performance, smooth responses and refinement combine to deliver another Defender that’s a world-class all-

“Combining advanced technology and durable mechanical underpinnings, we have delivered the toughness and character you can only find in a Defender. LIVE ACTION 1. Make the move online Lockdown has transformed the way customers now interact with brands so developing a strong, reliable and consistent online experience is key. Adopt a customer’s perspective and review your website, social media and digital strategies with them in mind. Is the path to purchase easy to navigate? Are the visuals up to date? Are products clearly articulated? 2. Develop a plan Instagram Live Sales is the closest thing to selling in person that technology can offer. One of the key benefits of a Live Sale is that you won’t be buried in a feed of posts. As with live TV, the unexpected can happen so it’s best to prepare a run sheet before any live sale. Know what you’re going to say and in what

70 / SUMMER 202 1

order. Assign dedicated roles to team members, know your angles and remember you’re talking with, not at your customers. 3. Recreate the offline, online In today’s digital age, customers want to be visually stimulated so it’s important to create a mood that represents the brand. This can be achieved through styling, lighting, sound, ambience and vocal delivery. 4. Brand each stream Many brands make the big mistake of cramming too much into a Live Sale. When it comes to maximising a return on this channel, less is sometimes more. It’s a good idea to run multiple Live Sales weekly and showcase products specific to a single category. This will allow you to

brand each segment so customers come to learn a familiar shopping schedule with your business. 5. Introduce a selling mechanic It’s important to come up with a mechanic that works with your community and is easy to understand - such as a unique number, code or name. At Stoned Crystals, each crystal is assigned a number and caption highlighting the stone type, its dimensions and its properties. If a customer chooses to buy, they simply quote the crystal number with a purchasing identifier i.e. “MINE” - in the comments so a team member can review the transcript, contact each buyer and send them a direct link to our website so they can process the order securely.

A change in circumstances has motived many people to consider online businesses. Here, Stoned Crystals founder, Ashley Bellino shares her Instagram Live Broadcast Tips. stonedcrystals.com stonedcrystals

6. Develop a connection Operating in real time means you won’t always be able to rehearse your responses and may be caught off guard. Look at this as a positive. People love candid conversations. It’s always good to be responsive to comments so you can constantly evolve your pitch and meet the everchanging needs of your customers. 7. Timing is everything At Stoned Crystals, we conduct each Live Sale at different lengths and speeds depending on the product focus. For a beginner, I would suggest keeping it to 30-minutes or less. As you develop a rapport with customers and learn what ways of engagement works best, you can easily sell for up to 4-hours in a single show. If choosing to run

an extensive and lengthy Live Sale, I highly recommend developing an itemised schedule and sharing this with potential viewers via your socials prior. This will allow customers to tune in at a time relevant to them. 8. Marketing is your friend When times are tough, many brands choose to relax their marketing budgets when in reality, they should be doing the opposite! Like any campaign, planning is key. Prior to commencing a Live Sale, develop a calendar of dates and times you wish to show. For beginners, 2-4 weeks in advance will suffice. If budget is limited, use the resources you have available such as your website, social media feed, newsletter.

9. Make mistakes Accept the fact you might make a mistake (or two!) and let yourself be vulnerable. People crave this human connection. Learn as you go and take the time to evaluate each showing so you can constantly improve and find a winning formula for your brand. 10. Have fun COVID-19 has provided businesses with new opportunities for online growth. Instagram offers an inexpensive way for brands to reach existing and new customers. With the right planning, the right team, the right merchandising and the right mindset, a Live Sale can transform a business. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Find what works best for you and continue to evolve alongside your customers.
