Smooth Operator

We’ve ripped, shaved, zapped and mitted it. Thankfully, there are smoother solutions to the eternal challenge of how to gently remove unwanted hair. Here, Daniela Costa, Nair Ambassador & Founder of Daniela Costa Brows and Beauty reveals all. Hair removal has come a long way in 20 years - what are the gentlest and most effective means of hair removal these days?

If you’re after an effective, gentle and pain-free hair removal, you can’t go past a depilatory hair removal cream. Hair removal creams have come a long way, they’re easyto-use, can be used on all skin types, and leave you with silky smooth skin as they remove hair from below the epidermis.

Depilatories are particularly great for time-poor people as this method will get you hair-frere in as little as five to 10 minutes, depending on the product. Look for creams that also include nourishing ingredients such as the Nair Leg Mask with 100 percent natural clay and charcoal.

The most effective, long-term hair removal method available at salons today is laser. This semi-permanent hair removal solution targets the pigment of the hair, leaving you hair-free for up to several months, depending on how you respond to the treatment - everyone is different. If you’re wanting an effective way to remove hair athome, waxing is a fantastic option. Find the solution that works best for you. Whether it’s a hot wax tub or strip wax, these solutions have been formulated to leave you with hair-free skin for up to four weeks. What about if you have sensitive skin? What are the best products and methods? FACE If your face is sensitive, I’d recommend sticking to tweezing and threading for eyebrows or depilatory creams and dermaplaning to remove peach fuzz from your face. My favourite tweezers to remove individual hairs are Tweezerman Tweezers.

Dermaplaning is also an easy solution for sensitive skin to remove dead skin and hair on your face. Look for tools that have precise and gentle blades, like the Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glow.

If you’re using a hair removal cream for any part of your face, look out for a cream that is specially formulated to be used on sensitive skin such as the Nair Sensitive Precision Hair Removal Cream. UNDERARMS/BIKINI LINE For those with sensitive underarms or bikini line, a hot wax tub is excellent for removing hair and soothing the skin. Hot waxes, such as the Nair Salon Divine Sensitive Wax 100g are specially designed for sensitive skin and areas such as the underarms and bikini line.

Nair has a wide range of products to suit, whether you have sensitive skin, dry skin or suffer from ingrown hairs. As we are seeing natural ingredients becoming highly requested in the beauty and body care industry, Nair, too, keeps on improving their range. Nair has recently launched its first natural range, Soft Natural Wax Strips, which include 99 percent of ingredients of natural origin, such as chamomile extract and natural beeswax.

They’re generally thicker and soothing on the skin so you can go over the treatment area more than once if needed.

Additionally, the Nair sensitive range, for example, contains moisturising and natural ingredients such as coconut oil and Vitamin E, cherry blossom extract, sweet almond oil, rice bran or argan oil. These ingredients are nourishing and soothing for the skin to complement its hair removal efficacy.

BODY

Any other advice?

If the larger areas of your body (arms, legs, back or chest) are sensitive, try a strip wax or depilatory cream with soothing ingredients such as zinc oxide, chamomile and tea tree, as well as oils such as argan, coconut, rice bran and almond. Products with these ingredients, such as the new Nair Soft Natural large wax strips, will not only ensure effective hair removal, but will also be soothing on the skin and minimise inflammation.

Yes, a lot! Firstly, you should always prep your skin prior to any hair removal! That means moisturising regularly to keep your skin hydrated, and exfoliating the skin using a body scrub or exfoliating gloves 24 to 48 hours prior to hair removal.

Can you use creams or waxes on delicate regions? Yes. Look for products that have been developed especially for sensitive skin. There are also products specifically designed for these areas. Hair removal creams or wax may be smaller in size and have an applicator to help you maneuver around the contours of your face. You can also find mini wax strips that can be applied around the curves of your upper lip, eyebrow and bikini line.

12 / SPRING 2021

What are the ingredients in Nair products?

On the day of hair removal, make sure your skin is clean, dry and free of any product. You should also avoid extreme sun exposure prior to hair removal. This goes for at-home and insalon hair removal. Aftercare is also extremely important. Use a topical lotion with ingredients such as aloe vera or tea tree on your treated areas. These work to heal your skin and are also antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatory. You also want to avoid sun exposure after removal. Lastly, always patch test any products before using them. e brands taking the more eco-friendly option.

Footwear is going vegan, with a slew of high-profil Nike has teamed up with Ananas Anam, which specialises in the pineapple vegan leather known as “Pinatex”, to launch a new plant-based sneaker collection known as “The Happy Pineapple Collection”. Reworking some of Nike’s iconic designs over the years, including their Air Force and Air Max sneakers, the animalfree pineapple-based fabric will replace the use of animal leather, used with other sustainable materials such as cork. Created by Dr Carmen Hijosa, Pinatex resembles leather, thanks to the cellulose fibres extracted from pineapple leaves, and is a more sustainable alternative to traditional vegan leather alternatives derived from plastic, such as PU and PVC. By virtue of being animalfree, Pinatex also requires far

16 / SPRING 2021

fewer resources to produce compared to its conventional hide counterparts, as raising animals for skin requires huge amounts of feed, land, water and emits carbon dioxide in the process. The Happy Pineapple comprises five Nike models, each in several colours: Free Run Trail Premium, Air Force 1, Air Max 90, Air Max 95 and Air Zoom Type. Nike has also decided to incorporate other sustainable materials such as natural cork into the Happy Pineapple range, as part of the brand’s campaign to “Move to Zero” and tap into the fast-growing eco-friendly sneaker trend. Nike previously debuted animalfree leather versions of its SB Dunks and a recycled plastic “Space Hippie” range, while competitor brands are releasing their own plant-based and

sustainable designs to keep pace with consumer demand. Other brands taking a vegan stance include Reebok, Puma, Veja, Adidas and Swiss brand, On who have collaborated with tennis legend, Roger Federer in “The Roger Centre Court 0-Series”. The new unisex tennis sneaker is made from vegan leather and designed to be as lightweight as possible to reduce material consumption. According to co-founder of On, David Allemann, The Roger has approximately 30 percent of the footprint of animal leather and weighs one third of the weight of typical sneakers thanks to its lightweight Cloutec sole with a hidden “Speedboard” feature. The sole delivers “unrivalled cushioning” and helps return energy to the wearer to make each step feel light. More at on-running.com/en-au

Child’s Play During 2020, families faced changes to the way we live, work and interact at home. The focus was on rooms doing double, even triple duty, which has shaped design choices in kids’ bedrooms. As well as a study space, bedrooms need to incorporate comfort, storage and a means of embracing downtime. It’s doesn’t have to be limited to sleep, homework and TV/ games console. If there’s space, an activity wall in the kids’ room can combine storage, play time and creativity. Loft or bunk beds make the best use of space, provide additional storage options can grow with children with changes to décor, themes and colour schemes. Creating an inviting ambience is important, and children are always eager to be involved in the design and decoration.

Oil Therapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils for therapeutic benefit.

Aromatherapy has been relied upon for more than 5,000 years, used for religious purposes, perfume and medicine. Today, aromatherapy is a natural remedy for stress relief and some oils have even been found to reduce the sensation of pain. Your olfactory system directly affects the part of your brain that regulates emotion. That’s why smells can trigger memories and elicit feelings, negative and positive. Aromatherapy can help in reducing stress and anxiety to engage a general state of calm. There are several ways to use essential oils for stress, from applying topically to inhaling 28 / SPRING 2021

If you’re going to apply it topically, it’s best to test the oil on a small area of skin first to identify a potential reaction. It’s back to the 2000s where shades are big and bold, as seen on Kylie Jenner, Elsa Hosk and Dua Lipa wearing the decade’s most iconic eyewear silhouette.

Built on a shared passion for style and quality, the brand is continually at the forefront of design, innovation, and craftsmanship.

Get the look with Privé Reveaux’s Constellation sunglasses. Privé Reveaux was cofounded by Hollywood heavy-hitters Ashley Benson, Jamie Foxx and Hailee Steinfeld, with serial entrepreneur David Schottenstein, and Creative Directors Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn. Privé Revaux has expanded its product offering in a short time from traditional sunglasses into high-quality, fun, and fashion-forward reading glasses, anti-blue light glasses, accessories, multiple celebrity-designed capsule collections, and prescription eyewear.

no cost to those ential landfill, available at New clothes, rescued from pot e “Thread n of the Australian initiativ sio Mis the is t Tha t. mos it who need doing it tough. h charities to clothe people Together” which partners wit Thread Together is the only organisation in Australia whose main mission and focus is to source new and excess clothing from fashion retailers and redistribute items to those in our communities that need it most. Founded in 2012 by Andie Halas, former shareholder of Seafolly, Thread Together embodies her vision of ensuring unsold clothes can go to support people in need. By collaborating with some of Australia’s largest clothing suppliers and social service agencies, Thread Together changes not just the future of the clothes but also the futures of people in crisis. In five years they have distributed over $8 million worth of new clothing to people in our community who are vulnerable and in need. Working with around 40 fashion partners, more than one million items of clothing have been diverted from landfill, and more than 300,000 people have benefited. “Our model is very simple,” says

founder, Andie Halas. “We collect end-of-line brand new stock from clothing providers. With the support of volunteers, the clothes are sorted by age, gender, and purpose, and then re-distributed to people in need through charities across Australia. I think of it as redistributive justice.” An increasing number of Australians do not have access to essential clothing. According to the Social Policy Research Centre report of 2016, 2.99 million people (13.3 percent of the population), are living below the poverty line. Thread Together is currently supporting the people who are homeless, youth at risk, Indigenous communities, survivors of domestic violence, refugees or long term unemployed. People in need of comfortable clothing to enable them to feel safe and warm, or people seeking clothing for a new job. Men, women and children that are finding themselves in a tough spot, are welcomed to choose a complete new set of clothes. This

is facilitated through our Wardrobe Initiatives and Clothing Hubs. This has resulted in tonnes of new clothing being diverted from landfill to date. As well as helping us achieve our mission, it has cemented Thread Together as an effective solution for the textile waste problem in Australia. In 2020, Thread Together opened a warehouse and fulfilment centre to continue their work. CEO of Thread Together, Anthony Chesler and Founder, Andie Halas said “The new warehouse will enable Thread Together to continue their mission to being the most ethical response to excess fashion waste in Australia”. “The new facility in Banksmeadow (NSW) will future proof Thread Together for the next three years, the additional capacity enabling the charity to efficiently manage the growing needs of the organisation in supporting vulnerable Australians.” More at threadtogether.org

Tequila is at least 2,000 years old, dating back to the Aztec Indians who produced a fermented juice of the agave for their ceremonial wine.

Rim glass with pink salt and sumac.

When the Spanish conquered the lands now known as Mexico, the Marquis of Altamira built the first large-scale distillery in the 1600s using blue agave. In 1974, the Mexican government declared the term ‘tequila’ as the intellectual property of Mexico. This made it illegal for any other state to produce and sell their own ‘tequila’. Tequila is made from the cooked and fermented juice of the agave, a succulent. The ripe pina from mature agave plants produce a superior tequila as it has more sugar and gives higher yields. OMBRA:

Recipes from the Salumi Bar By Carlo Grossi

Timeless Italian bar culture gets a modern Melbourne twist at Carlo Grossi’s Ombra. In Venice you’ll often hear the phrase Andiamo per un ombra? (‘Shall we go for a drink?’). And it’s this ‘ombra’, the Venetian name for a small tumbler of wine, that inspired Carlo Grossi’s restaurant – a modern take on an authentic Italian salumi bar right in the bustling heart of Melbourne. The Ombra cookbook brings together the very best of Carlo’s food and hospitality, from lovingly aged meats and homemade sausages to mouth-watering pizzas, all sorts of irresistible bar snacks (cicchetti), hearty evening meals, fermented and pickled vegetables and fruits, and delectable desserts to finish off the evening. With family heirloom recipes and dishes inspired by Carlo’s travels all over Italy, the Italian ideals of preservation and quality produce are on proud display in this collection of familiar and tasty food that’s made for sharing over a lively conversation.

Ombra pizza dough

From the start it was important that we had the right style of dough to form the base of all our pizzas. We wanted more of a Roman style of pizza, a lighter, crisper end result than the softer Neapolitan-style base that tends to droop in your hands! We experimented with different fermentation times and ultimately found the best time to be 48 hours. It gives the best crust with just the right amount of chew and great blistering while also allowing the pizza to stand the weight of toppings. Noteworthy here is that we always use the purified water that we serve in the restaurant, which I believe makes a very big difference to the end product in both flavour and density and texture. These elements gave us a great starting point for our pizza program. Cooking pizza at home is like making pasta: it’s tactile. Once you start rolling it out everyone starts to get involved, getting their hands into the dough and making all sorts of shapes and rustic-looking bases. It’s most fun because it really brings people together, and the satisfaction of making something together that you’ll then eat as a group is a truly fulfilling feeling. Makes 10 × 250 g dough balls (enough for 10 pizzas) 8g fresh yeast, crumbled, or 2 tablespoons dried yeast 1 litre water 1.6kg good-quality strong pizza flour 2 tablespoons salt Dissolve the yeast in 1 cup (250ml) of the water in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the flour, salt and remaining 3 cups (750 ml) water and mix on low speed until combined, then increase the speed slightly and mix for 10 to 15 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Transfer the dough to a container, cover and leave it in the fridge for 24 hours. The next day remove the dough from the fridge, then cut and weigh it into 10 × 250g pieces. Roll into balls and leave them on a floured tray, covered with a clean tea towel, to prove for another 24 hours in the fridge. The next day the dough will be ready to use.

Pizza ‘nduja

‘Nduja is the fiery salumi from Calabria, rich both in spice and in fat. It’s great as a spread on crusty bread as a cicchetti but it also finds its home beautifully on this pared back pizza with the fior di latte and the delicious saltiness of the anchovy fillets. Makes 1 pizza coarse semola flour, for dusting 250g Pizza Dough (page 108) 40g ‘nduja sauce (recipe below) 90g fior di latte, torn into small pieces 7 anchovy fillets ¼ cup Parmigiano crumb (recipe below) celery leaves, to serve Parmigiano crumb 100g grated Parmigiano 2 tablespoons olive oil

50g unsalted butter 100g panko breadcrumbs 3 teaspoons chopped flat-leaf parsley finely grated zest of 1 lemon ‘Nduja sauce 1 tablespoon olive oil 50g ‘Nduja (page 46) 100ml white wine 100g San Marzano tinned tomatoes, blended

Preheat the oven to 160°C (fan-forced). Line a baking tray with baking paper. To make the Parmigiano crumb, spread the grated Parmigiano over the prepared tray and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool. Increase the oven to 220°C (fan-forced). Lightly oil a large pizza tray or preheat a pizza stone. Meanwhile, heat the oil and butter in a frying pan over medium heat, then add the breadcrumbs and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often, until golden brown. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Crush the cooled Parmigiano with your hands and mix in a bowl with the cooled breadcrumbs, parsley and zest. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 1 week. To make the ‘nduja sauce, heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat, then add the ‘nduja and cook slowly until it starts to melt. Deglaze the pan with the white wine and add the tomatoes. Cook on a low heat for 5 to 6 minutes or until slightly thickened. Transfer to a bowl and allow to cool completely. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Lightly dust the workbench with semola flour. Stretch the pizza dough using your hands ensuring the edge is thick enough to form a crust (see recipe). Transfer the dough to the

prepared tray or onto the preheated pizza stone using a paddle. Spread the ‘nduja sauce over the dough with the back of a spoon, then scatter with the fior di latte and anchovies. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until crisp and golden. Serve sprinkled with the Parmigiano crumb and celery leaves.

Octopus, potato, green beans

Octopus can vary greatly in taste and texture and we are really lucky here in Australia to have such a diverse offering of the species across all our waters. Personally, I love the octopus from Fremantle as its texture and flavour are always sumptuous. This recipe gives you a soft, tender, melt-in-the-mouth octopus. Lightly boiled potatoes add a little starch while the green beans bring just a touch of crunch. I always find a spicier style of extra virgin olive oil really brings things together. The octopus looks impressive when presented whole, but you can also chop it into 2cm pieces before warming it with the vegetables. Serves 4 500g octopus tentacles 1 large onion, roughly chopped 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped 1 large carrot, roughly chopped 3 bay leaves 3 sprigs thyme 2 cloves garlic 200ml white wine

2 potatoes, boiled until tender then peeled and cut in cubes 100g green beans, blanched 5 sprigs flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 5 to 6 basil leaves extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling 1 lemon, cut into wedges salt and cracked black pepper

Place the octopus in a large saucepan with the onion, celery, carrot, bay leaves, thyme and garlic. Pour in enough water until the octopus is just covered. Add the white wine and bring just to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and poach for 1 hour or until the octopus is tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the octopus to cool in the poaching liquid. Once cooled, drain the octopus (and chop into 2cm pieces, if desired), then toss gently in a saucepan over low heat with the potato, beans, parsley, basil and olive oil until warmed through. Serve warm or cold with a squeeze of lemon and seasoned with salt and pepper.

Suckling lamb, pomodoro

This dish is one of those ones that screams comfort. It’s bowl food, the kind you can tuck into with some soft polenta or crusty bread to mop up the sauce. It will make you feel good, both cooking it and consuming it. Serves 6 1 × 1.2kg piece boneless suckling lamb shoulder ¾ teaspoon whole cloves ¾ teaspoon toasted fennel seeds 1 teaspoon black peppercorns 1 teaspoon salt 500g Dutch cream potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges 1 onion, finely chopped ⅓ cup oregano, chopped

2 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 50ml olive oil 150ml white wine 350ml passata 350ml chicken stock 30g packaged breadcrumbs ½ cup (50g) grated Grana Padano Preheat the oven to 170°C (fan-forced).

Cut the lamb into roughly 4cm pieces and place in an earthenware dish or roasting tin. Grind the cloves, fennel seeds and peppercorns into a powder with a mortar and pestle, then mix in the salt. Rub the mixture into the lamb. Add the potato, onion, oregano, parsley, garlic, olive oil and white wine to the lamb. Pour in the passata and stock and mix to combine. Cover the top with the breadcrumbs and cheese and, using your fingers, push some of the crumbs and cheese into the liquid, not disturbing the top of the lamb which will form a crust as it cooks. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until the meat is tender.

PIZZA DIAVOLA

The ‘devil’s pizza’ is another spicy pizza and one of the favourites of Ombra’s regulars. It’s got just enough kick to satisfy even the most discerning of our chilli lovers. Makes 1 pizza Coarse semola flour, for dusting 250 g Pizza Dough (page 108) 50g San Marzano tinned tomatoes, blended 100g fior di latte, torn into small pieces 30g thinly sliced hot salami ½ long red chilli, finely chopped olive oil, for drizzling Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan-forced). Lightly oil a large pizza tray or preheat a pizza stone. Lightly dust the workbench with semola flour. Stretch the pizza dough using your hands ensuring the edge is thick enough to form a crust (see recipe). Transfer the dough to the prepared tray or the preheated pizza stone using a paddle. Spread the tomato sauce over the dough with the back of a spoon. Scatter with the cheese, salami and chilli, then drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes until crisp and golden.

PIZZA PROSCIUTTO, GORGONZOLA

You can talk about matches made in heaven until the cows come home, but nothing will beat the combination of prosciutto and gorgonzola. I love the lava-like gorgonzola when it comes out of the oven, with the sharp smell of the blue cheese that’s just waiting to be adorned with silky slices of prosciutto, which soften just from the heat without needing any cooking. I think I need a slice now! Makes 1 pizza Coarse semola flour, for dusting 250g Pizza Dough 90g fior di latte, torn into small pieces 30g Gorgonzola cheese, chopped olive oil, for drizzling Salt and cracked black pepper 50g thinly sliced prosciutto Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan-forced). Lightly oil a large pizza tray or preheat a pizza stone. Lightly dust the workbench with semola flour. Stretch the pizza dough using your hands ensuring the edge is thick enough to form a crust. Transfer the dough to the prepared tray or the preheated pizza stone using a paddle. Scatter the fior di latte over the dough followed by the Gorgonzola. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until crisp and golden. Serve the pizza draped with the prosciutto.

STYLEMAKER During a decade spanning reality TV, online media platform and clothing, accessories and homeware entrepreneur, Rachel Zoe evolved from stylist to the A-list to designer and fashion guru in her own right. Raised in New Jersey, she was born Rachel Zoe Rosenzweig. The star of “The Rachel Zoe Project” which ran from 2008 to 2013 and catapulted her to international fame, dropped her surname at the start of her career as a fashion stylist. Zoe studied psychology and sociology at George Washington University in Washington DC, where she met her husband, Rodger Berman, but fashion was always her destiny. As she recounted in an essay in Gillian Zoe Segal’s “Getting There: A Book of Mentors”, Zoe took heed of her grandfather’s advice to follow her passion. “When I graduated from college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. My grandfather said ‘Do whatever it is that you love and success will come’. “I had always been in love with fashion. As a little girl, I was perpetually overdressed for everything and about five years ahead of the trend. When I got older, I was constantly doing everyone’s hair and makeup. Through a friend of a friend’s sister, I was able to land a job as a fashion assistant at YM, a teen magazine, in New York City. I didn’t even know what a fashion assistant was, but I figured that if it contained the word ‘fashion’, it was where I was meant to be.”

like the Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias, Jessica Simpson, and Britney Spears, while also freelancing as a contributing editor for a number of fashion magazines. I was a one-woman show and working around the clock. I was on a plane every other day, travelling with 10 trunks of clothes. It was extremely exhausting, but I loved being on my own and finally making a decent income.” The allure of Hollywood and the LA lifestyle appealed to Zoe and Burman, and they moved west in 2002 with one objective: “to merge the worlds of Hollywood and fashion, because I felt that there was this huge disconnect”. Jennifer Garner was Zoe’s first high profile client who launched her into the celebrity spotlight in 2003. “The glamorous look I selected for Jen for the Emmys changed everything for me,” Zoe said, referring to the cream satin Narciso Rodriguez gown with ‘peekaboo cutouts’ she wore as a nominee for her role in the series Alias. “I transitioned into styling actresses and began working with Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, and Keira Knightley. I felt so lucky to be dressing such talented, beautiful women in haute couture.

Eventually she took a chance and made the leap to a career as freelance as a stylist. With her enviable black book of contacts, the jobs were immediate.

“I also started meeting all of the fashion designers I had always idolised from a distance. I couldn’t believe this was my job, but I don’t want to totally sugar-coat it. While I may have been attending movie premieres and hanging out with celebrities, I was there to fluff my clients’ trains, hold their handbags, and make sure they had ChapStick, lint brushes and snacks on hand. I was there to provide a service and never lost sight of that.”

“I was styling big music stars

addictive reality TV series, “The Rachel Zoe Project”, Zoe cemented her credentials as stylist to the stars. Her “Zoe-isms” including “I die” to express delight when a look comes together, “I’m obsessed” about a fresh rack of designer gowns, “sexiness should be in the subtleties” and “glamour is a state of mind” became catchphrases of the show. Now, 10 years on, the stylist’s role has morphed to star stature. “A stylist used to be a very behind-the-scenes job, not really talked about. I wouldn’t even do an interview about my clients without permission from them. It was much more secretive. If we took pictures on Oscar night or premiere day, it was for our eyes only. “Now celebrities post pictures of their stylist, hair and makeup people nearly every time they get ready and credit them on Instagram. Instagram has made it significantly more possible for stylists to start brands of their own.” And since 2009, when she founded “The Zoe Report”, a newsletter covering fashion, beauty and lifestyle, Zoe’s brand has only boomed. In 2011, she launched her first contemporary collection of separates, footwear, handbags, jewellery and accessories influenced by her vintage-inspired style, available in US department stores and online. By 2015, The Zoe Report introduced “Box of Style”, a service that delivers a selection of Rachel Zoe-approved goods to subscribers’ doorsteps four times a year, along with various member benefits. “While I loved styling, I wanted to connect more directly with my followers, which inspired me to launch

The Zoe Report to provide my editorial perspective, Rachel Zoe Collection to provide my design perspective and finally Box of Style, now rebranded as ‘Curateur’, which provides my curation perspective.” Of all the roles she’s taken on, motherhood influences her the most. Zoe and Berman have two sons, Skyler, 10, and Kaius, seven. “It’s given me a new, healthier set of priorities,” Zoe confessed. “I used to be very focused on myself. My career consumed and ran my life. “When something went wrong, I would let it affect me too much. When my first son was born, it was as if a new life started for me too. I now have two sons and spend my time wondering how I can make their lives the best for them. Petty things can still upset me, but only for a very short time now. I look at my kids and realise it does not matter. Negativity burns inside of you and keeps you awake at night. If you can avoid letting it consume you, I strongly suggest doing so. You will have more freedom to enjoy life and focus on important, productive things.” The pandemic reinforced Zoe’s commitment to family. Time confined at home together strengthened their family bonds. During 2020, Zoe and Berman launched a podcast together, titled “Works For Us”, where they divulge the secrets to their own lasting relationship and interview other famous duos. “Relationships are something we’re all faced with every minute of our lives,” Zoe said. “We felt it would be great to not only share our ‘recipe’, but more importantly, what’s the ‘secret sauce’ for everybody else? Why does it work for them?”

We’ve grown closer as a family. That’s been the best part of this insane awful year; the quality time.

Time at home in the quiet hills of Brentwood also gave Zoe more time to focus on her range of homewares. “Now, more than ever, you have to make your athome atmosphere really count,” she said of the eponymous collection.

Ever the fashion forecaster, Zoe predicts post-pandemic, fashion “will be born again”. As the original influencer, Zoe surmises fashion will diverge into two main branches catering to two types of buyers: those looking to stay “comfortable and continue to have a more casual lifestyle, and another group that will absolutely thrive on the resurrection of glam, wanting to dress up to go to the grocery store”.

“I believe everyone can style themselves. You don’t have to be rich or a VIP. And fashion should always be fun. If you don’t take chances, then what’s the fun in playing the game?” More at curateur.com

The key is expressing yourself, your mood and taking a risk.

While I loved styling, I wanted to connect more directly with my followers, which inspired me to launch The Zoe Report to provide my editorial perspective.

“My home style and personal style are very similar. I have this split personality of glam with bohemian undertones. I love suedes and leathers and textures and sheep skins and faux furs and animal prints and earth tones. And then I kind of love to add gold accents and brass and lots of Missoni prints and colours.”

Intravenous Vitamins is an increasingly popular treatment option for health focused individuals around the globe.

46 / SPRING 2021

Vitamin infusion Taking control of our health has never been so important as it is in today’s fast paced world. So many of us are looking towards holistic ways to maintain our health and vitality. Although IV therapy is not new, having gained traction in the 1980s, it is gaining a lot of attention due to being such an effective method to optimise well-being. “IV” is short for intravenous, which means it’s administered through the veins. The fluid that contains Vitamins and minerals are delivered via an IV drip or injection into the vein, which allows the therapy to move quickly through your bloodstream.

This high absorption rate means that the availability of nutrients to every cell in our body is optimised, resulting in a far greater effect. Most of the Vitamins and minerals given in IV therapy are water soluble, meaning anything excess that is not needed will not accumulate, making it a low-risk treatment option. IV nutrient therapy is a quick treatment that can leave you feeling full of energy; is great for hair; skin and nails and anti-ageing and for those needing any vitamin correction and also for iron infusions for those low in iron.

IV Nutritional Therapy is so effective due to its high absorption rates. Over 90 percent of the vitamins, minerals and electrolytes are absorbed, in comparison to only up to 10 percent with oral supplementation.

Traditionally, people who aren’t able to eat enough food, or who have an illness that interferes with nutrient absorption would be good candidates for IV Vitamin Therapy. IV Vitamin Infusion is also great for patients post weight loss surgery.

It is nearly impossible to reach optimal levels when taking these vitamins orally as compared to IV Vitamin Therapy. This is because when you take vitamins by mouth they have to be processed by the body and their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract is often impaired.

The IV Therapy Lounge offers a range of different therapy options, all of which are administered by the highly experienced Integrative Health Nurse, as well as available consults with the on-site Doctor. More at loungeiv.com.au

Help control your hunger The Elipse™ is the world’s first swallowable, ‘procedureless’ gastric balloon that requires no surgery, no endoscopy* and no anaesthesia.

48 / SPRING 2021

For the first time in Australia, people seeking to lose weight have access to the latest advance in medicallyassisted weight-loss that works where diets and other forms of treatment have failed. Weightloss Solutions Australia is offering the Elipse Balloon method of hunger management. Swallowed in a capsule, the balloon once inflated, creates a feeling of fullness to help control hunger. “It’s very exciting,” says Felicity Cohen, Founder and Director of WLSA. “The Balloon provides patients with a tool to change their lifestyle and to improve their habits over a four-month period whilst the balloon is in place and followed by on-going lifestyle program for another 8 months to establish new habits for life and keep weight off. It has been approved by the TGA and more than 50,000 people have already benefited around the world, mostly in Europe. “We see it as being very popular because of its success rate and safety; the most significant feature being no anaesthetic and no endoscopy so downtime is very minimal.” The Elipse is the world’s first swallowable,

‘procedureless’ gastric balloon that requires no surgery and no anaesthesia. The Elipse Balloon is safe, non-permanent, recommended by doctors, and can help you lose around 10 to 15 percent of your body weight in just 16 weeks alongside the WLSA fully-supported 12-month lifestyle program. Elipse Balloon is a soft, silicone balloon packaged into a swallowable capsule connected to a thin filling catheter (tube). The WLSA surgeon inflates the balloon with 550ml of fluid while the patient is in the chair, conscious and relaxed, supported by a Registered Nurse. “You then get up and return to work or home,” says Felicity.

which your stomach empties, the Elipse Balloon helps to create an earlier and longerlasting feeling of fullness.

weight. After 16 weeks, the Balloon will pass naturally, having given you a kickstart to your weight-loss journey.

The Elipse Balloon works by inducing early satiety (a sense of fullness) in two ways: Delaying gastric emptying – since the emptying time of the stomach is prolonged, you feel fuller for longer and reducing stomach capacity – helping you to reduce your portion sizes.

When combined with intensive weight loss strategies, the Elipse Balloon leads to nearly 2.5 times more weight-loss than when undertaking intensive weight-loss strategies alone, over 16 weeks.

This pause is the ideal time for patients to replace poor habits with new, longterm habits such as healthy eating and exercise. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that patients lose on average 10 to 15 percent of their total body

“It’s important to highlight that there is no magic pill,” observes Felicity. “No device will succeed if patients do not work with multidisciplinary team towards long-term outcomes. Our bariatric allied health teamwork with patients to ensure they follow the program for optimal results.”

“It’s as simple as that. There’s no need for anaesthetic It’s great for people who can’t access other forms of treatment because of medical conditions and are keen to lose weight; or for many patients awaiting a knee operation for example by weight loss is essential first.” Designed to help you reduce your food intake by taking up space in your stomach and slowing the rate at

4 THINGS YOU

DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

Organic Wine The conscious sustainability movement has become a way of life, with many taking small steps to safeguard the world around us. Going beyond the ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ mantra, we’re now looking more closely at what we’re putting into our bodies. This is why Australia’s organic industry, worth over $2 billion, is seeing unprecedented growth, with organic wine growing in popularity. So, what goes into picking a quality drop of Certified Organic wine and why is this different from your usual glass? According to Tony Ingle, the Chief Winemaker and ‘Vine Whisperer’ at Angove Family Winemakers, the main difference between conventional and Certified Organic wine is that it is made free of artificial chemicals, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.  These “honest” wines rely entirely on the quality of the land, the care of the grapegrower, the biodiversity of the region it was grown in and the craft of the winemaker. From taste to content, here are four things you might not know about Certified Organic wines:

1.

It tastes better. Numerous studies have shown that eco-friendly wines taste better. In an analysis of 74,000 wines in the US, experts rated Certified Organic and biodynamic wines higher compared to conventional wines.  “Buying Certified Organic wines means you get all of the varietal flavour, complexity and structure without the synthetic chemicals,” says Tony. 52 / SPRING 2021

2.

It has similar or higher antioxidants and phenolic content.  A recent report published by Australian Organic shows that the antioxidant activity and phenolic content of Certified Organic wines are similar or higher than conventional wine.

3.

It has less sulphur dioxide.  Certified Organic wines must have concentrations of no more than 150ppm (parts per million), while non-organic wines could have up to 300ppm. Angove’s Certified Organic wines have less than 100ppm sulphur dioxide. For those sensitive to sulphur dioxide, Certified Organic wines are a better choice.

4.

Companies can have only 2 percent organic ingredients to label their product ‘organic’. In Australia, organic certification is optional. Producers can have as little as 2 percent organic ingredients to label their products ‘organic’. Worryingly, only one in 10 Aussies is aware of this fact. To ensure your wine, or any organic product, is truly organic, look out for third-party certification on their label, such as Australian Organic’s recognisable ‘Certified Organic’ bud logo.  Enjoy your next glass of Certified Organic wine, knowing you’ve contributed to your health, as well as that of the planet. Advice from Financial Fixer

Ginette Muller

It needn’t take a Chief Economist to tell us the economic road ahead looks ‘rocky’ and that trading conditions are weakening due to the lockdowns. And yet, not so long ago, according to those in the know, there were and still are sectors in our economy doing really, really well. Especially early in 2021, many businesses were quite frankly booming. The problem unfortunately, was that whilst sales might have been going through the roof, the profits were going through the floor. They were and continue to be slim to non-existent; commonly referred to as a green drought. Well, it’s not all bad news. According to ASIC, the number of insolvency appointments in the last 12 months are half the 5-year average. In a bizarre twist, the insolvency industry is another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by generous government stimulus, record low interest rates, and a seismic shift in the debtor/creditor relationships that exist in modern day Australian business.

ATO, Banks and Creditors are only human after all! Recently, I have been contacted by a number of businesspeople who have companies that are contemplating ceasing to trade and unsurprisingly they have tax debt that simply cannot be met. Each situation is different, but without much variation, my key piece of advice to directors is: make sure you are compliant. Step 1: Lodge your BAS and your tax returns – then let’s talk about the options available to sort out the liability. Which brings me to the issue of how to deal with creditors – the ATO and Banks included. Firstly, everyone has been through the events of the last 18 months together, we all have experienced the shock that something so insidious as a virus could destroy so much that we all took for granted. Creditors also have suffered and are acutely aware of their obligation to debtors, to treat those they deal with reasonably and not make the trauma any worse than it needs to be. The tax office has specifically said that businesses should be able to exit the corporate world with dignity. There are some caveats of course – and for the most part that is, you do the right thing, be honest and transparent with your creditors and you can expect that they will treat you with fairness and with dignity. If any of this resonates with you, get some advice from a reputable person. Obviously, The Solvers can point you in the right direction but also consider speaking to the Tax Office. Depending on your circumstances, they may be able to: give you extra time to lodge and pay your tax; set up a payment plan tailored to your situation; remit penalties or interest; process your tax return as a priority; prevent any tax refund you may be due to receive from being used to pay debts with other government organisations and defer your tax lodgement and payment due dates. Whatever issue you face, it comes down to getting the right advice for the issue that you have. It is not easy to find the right person because they will say they can help you with your problem but unfortunately, to a person with a hammer, everything looks like a nail! So, research your advisor thoroughly before you take the plunge.

Until next time, remember that a problem shared is a problem halved. For information Tel 0419 682 113 or 1300 659 700 or visit thesolvers.com.au 60 / SPRING 2021

Icon Reimagined Clever, capable and familyfriendly, new Land Rover Defender is an icon reimagined for the 21st century, in a category of its own. The unmistakable silhouette looks tough and is tough but designed with purpose and engineered to excite. Iconic in name, shape and capability, Defender can be personalised to allow owners to make the most of their world. Across seven decades of pioneering innovation, Land Rovers have earned a unique place in the hearts of explorers, humanitarian agencies and adventurous families across the world. Proven in the harshest environments on earth, the New Defender maintains this bloodline. A distinctive silhouette makes the New Defender instantly recognisable, with minimal front and rear overhangs providing excellent approach and departure angles. Land Rover’s designers re-envisioned familiar Defender trademarks for the 21st century, giving the 4x4 a purposeful upright stance and Alpine light windows in the roof, while retaining the side-hinged rear tailgate and externally-mounted spare wheel that make the original so identifiable. “The New Defender is respectful of its past but is not harnessed by it,” explains Gerry McGovern,

64 / SPRING 2021

Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover. “Its unique personality is accentuated by its distinctive silhouette and optimum proportions, which make it both highly desirable and seriously capable – a visually compelling 4x4 that wears its design and engineering integrity with uncompromised commitment.” The stripped-back personality of the original Defender has been embraced inside, where structural elements and fixings usually hidden from view have been exposed, with the emphasis on simplicity and practicality. Innovative features include a dash-mounted gear shifter to accommodate an optional centre front ‘jump’ seat, which provides threeabreast seating across the front like early Land Rovers. Defender 90 is capable of accommodating six occupants in a vehicle the length of a compact family hatchback. A choice of advanced four, six and eight cylinder engines ensure New Defender has the power, control and efficiency for any environment. The petrol line-up comprises a four-cylinder P300 and a refined six-cylinder P400. The powerful 525PS Defender V8 features a 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine and is the fastest, most powerful and dynamic production Defender ever made. Alternatively, customers can choose an in-line six-cylinder diesel – the D300 – providing a muscular 650Nm of torque. For ultimate choice, this powertrain is also available in D200 and D250. The in-line six-cylinder diesel engine is available with the

all-new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system and Defender is the first Land Rover to feature the technology. Following years of development, the new set-up allows for enhanced on-road performance and balance, as well as responsive off-road capability. The intelligent torque distribution system optimises the driveline for traction, on-road dynamics and driveline efficiency, resulting in improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions – all without sacrificing any of the Defender’s inherent off-road capability. Innovative engineering solutions support the efficiency drive, including a flat underbody which both optimises aerodynamic performance (as low as 0.38Cd) and protects the vehicle’s underbody. New Defender is as technologically advanced as it is durable. Land Rover’s Pivi Pro infotainment is available with a choice of 10-inch and curved glass 11.4-inch touchscreen displays. The intuitive and user-friendly system requires fewer inputs to perform frequently used tasks, while the always-on design guarantees almost instant responses. In addition, the Defender takes Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) technology to a new level, with multiple modules capable of receiving remote updates. By downloading data while customers are asleep at home or in far-flung locations, the New Defender will get better with age: as electronic updates cascade down to the vehicle immediately, without delay and with no need to visit a Land Rover retailer.

Customers can select from the widest range of accessories ever produced by Land Rover, including a choice of four Accessory Packs; Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban. In addition, Visual Packs available from 2022 Model Year include the Bright Pack and Extended Bright Pack, plus the Extended Black Pack for X-Dynamic, X and Defender V8 models. Within the lifetime of the New Defender, the embedded diagnostics system will be able to alert customers to issues and either prevent or resolve them automatically as a data connection replaces a traditional toolkit. A Driver Assist Pack includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear Pre-Collision Monitor, which alerts following drivers who are failing to slow down by automatically flashing the hazard lights, as well as Blind Spot Assist, Rear Traffic Monitor and Clear Exit Monitor. This impressive tally of features helped the New Defender 110 record a five-star Euro NCAP score, with an impressive 79 percent rating for the Safety Assist systems. A choice of 170 individual accessories means the chances of finding two identical Defenders is remote while Land Rover’s new Above and Beyond Collection of outdoor performance apparel and equipment delivers the same durability and toughness as Defender. Pets as Immunity Boosters Research has shown that owning a pet can have a number of physical and psychological health benefits.

Benefits include increased cardiovascular health (lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and in men, lower cholesterol), increased physical activity, increased self-esteem and fewer visits to the doctor. The joy of having a pet isn’t new to most Australians; we have one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. In fact, our pets are such positive influences on our lives that one study found that

Australian ownership of cats and dogs saved approximately $3.86 billion in health expenditure over one year.

Research from the UK shows the presence of cats and dogs in the home from an early age may actually ‘acclimatise’ the developing immune system so that it is less sensitive to allergens in later life. It appears that the presence of pets in the home has some regulatory or stabilising influence on the immune functioning of children. Using longitudinal studies of urban populations, researchers found that exposure to pets, especially dogs, in the perinatal period may reduce the development of allergic disease in children without a family history of allergy.

Published in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, the reports state that having a dog in infancy is associated with reduced allergic sensitisation and atopic dermatitis. The authors said the benefits were most pronounced in children aged between five and eight years. Dr June McNicholas from Warwick University in the UK found that children from pet owning families have less school absenteeism through illness and are more likely to have normal levels of immune function than children from non-owning families. Vaccination Legislation

Amid COVID-19 vaccination conspiracy theories on social media, political campaigns and patient advocacy groups, one question remains unanswered and that is “who is liable in the event one develops adverse side-effects from the vaccine”?

Australia has a long-standing compulsion for systematic and routine vaccines that are at time a legislative requirement. These include, ‘No Jab No Pay’ and ‘No Jab No Play’ in some Australian states. While some vaccines may be mandated, Australia does not provide a no fault injury compensation scheme for rare vaccine injury. No Fault Compensation Scheme – What is it? A no fault vaccine compensation scheme recompenses individuals who have sustained an injury following the administrations of a certified manufactured vaccine. Australia, in contrast to international counterparts, USA, UK and New Zealand, does not have a no fault vaccine compensation scheme. This means that an individual that sustains a vaccine related injury must bear the associated costs in accessing treatment via our publicly funded health systems and will not obtain any compensation for their pain and suffering. As a result, those affected are forced to embark on a complex and expensive litigation process

to seek compensation and related expenses. Australia’s Current Position Australia currently has a faultbased system for handling negligence claims. The process is long and arduous and can take years to be settled or decided. The issue associated with the current fault-based system is that settlement may not cover long-term costs associated with care and other expenses. Recently, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a new vaccine indemnity scheme. This scheme means that health practitioners that have been found liable as a result of adverse events from administering the COVID-19 vaccines will be compensated by the Commonwealth of Australia. It is well established that Pfizer is the vaccine of choice for under-60s in Australia, however recently the national cabinet stated that “GPs can continue to administer the AstraZeneca to Australians under 60 years of aged with informed consent”. The real implementation of the indemnity scheme therefore is to

design to support allied health practitioners and reduce the real and perceived impediments in administering the AstraZeneca vaccine to the under-60’s population. It seeks to shift exposure to possible claims from existing insurers to the Commonwealth of Australia. This does not negate nor prohibit patients suing health practitioners for negligent advice in relation to the purported risks and benefits of a particular vaccine. This falls well short of a no fault injury compensation scheme to allow for compensation award to include income indemnities, reimbursement of medical expenses, personal assistance expenses and travelling expenses that be resultant of the vaccine injury. Moving Forward The current use of ‘first in human’ phase III clinical trial roll out makes it foreseeable albeit rare that a vaccine related injury may occur. Notably, rare vaccine injury is not a new phenomenon. Guillain-Barre syndrome is another rare vaccine

related injury that is caused from the influenza vaccine. With the current climate and public questioning the vaccines safety as a result of blood clots occurring from the AstraZenaca vaccine, one would think that the Australian Government ought to implement a no fault vaccination scheme. Of course, if it is the proposition of the Government that being vaccinated is for the benefit of society, society should be safeguarded from possible risk of a vaccine injury. It follows that the Australian Government should recompense individuals who fall victim of a vaccine related injury. The implementation of a no fault vaccination scheme could increase public trust in the system rather than undermine current hesitancy and lack of confidence in the vaccine program. Hence, it would be timely that Australia now legislate and introduce a no fault compensation scheme for all vaccinations. This is a crucial step in navigating a pathway forward from the COVID-19 pandemic.
