A Cut Above The Rest:

MOBILE BARBER SHOP The Mobile Barber Shop Depot transforms from a barber shop by day into a breathtaking venue by night. Photo: Thiago Okimoto

Cutting-edge style and grooming for men has always been a business success story for Master Barber Joey D’Adderio. After three decades in the industry, Joey and his wife Nicoletta have taken the barber shop experience to the next level. Located in Bundall, their Mobile Barber Shop Depot is the first of its kind in Australia. More than a barber shop, it is also a stunning events venue and BYO social hub. JOEY, HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE GOLD COAST? I’ve lived here on the Gold Coast my whole life, whereas Nicoletta came to the Gold Coast in November 2006. Nicoletta is from Italy and I am a super local born and bred. MANY PEOPLE KNOW YOU AS THE FACE BEHIND LUIGI AND SONS BARBER SHOP AT THE Q SUPER CENTRE, MERMAID WATERS.

Mobile Barber Shop Depot masterminds Joey D’Adderio and Nicoletta Sagripanti. Photo: Klee Photography.

My father Luigi opened the shop at Q Super Centre 23 years ago. Once dad retired, I became the new captain of the ship. I was determined to take what was already a good business and turn it into a great business. Once this was achieved, I felt like I LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2019

needed a new challenge. So I decided to sell the shop and move forward towards bigger and better things. YOU MUST BE PROUD OF THE FAMILY BARBER SHOP LEGACY. HOW MANY AWARDS HAVE YOU WON? I couldn’t be any prouder of what we have all achieved. The awards we have won are crazy. In fact, I have so many of them displayed at Mobile Barber Shop Depot. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO EMBARK ON YOUR EXCITING NEW VENTURE? Three years ago, we created the first barber shop on wheels to service the wedding industry and corporate events, a 1962 Millard caravan fully decked out with two barber chairs, called Mobile Barber Shop. We really needed a home for this beast, so the search began for a depot to house it. Bundall was it. WHAT ARE YOUR ROLES IN THE BUSINESS? I run the barber shop whilst Nicoletta runs the events. Oh, let’s just put all ego aside. She is the mastermind behind this concept and I’m the executor.

Indulge yourself with a traditional hot towel cut-throat shave. Photo: Klee Photography.

DESCRIBE THE CONCEPT AND WHERE YOU DREW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM… Our concept is so unique that there was no inspiration from anywhere as it’s the first of its kind. It came from both our backgrounds – me as a Master Barber and Nicoletta with her involvement in the wedding industry through her brand Wood & Beau.

Ceremony floral installation from Bianca and Clint’s wedding at Mobile Barber Shop Depot. Photo: Wilde Visual.”

TELL US ABOUT BYO FRIDAYS… Our barber shop is a social hub. We love it when people come after work with their bottle of wine or six pack, hang out and have a few drinks with their colleagues or friends. Quite often they enjoy it so much that they end up ordering Uber Eats and hanging out until the barber shop closes.

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FORM OTHER BARBER SHOPS?

HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO PROVIDE A NEXT-LEVEL WEDDING VENUE WITHOUT THE LOFTY PRICE TAG?

The space has such a unique setting that when you walk through the door you feel an instant good vibe. It’s damn cool! It’s a barber shop open to families where women can feel more than welcome when bringing their kids or hanging out with their partners. We are a noattitude, highly skilled traditional barber shop.

Our venue is BYO which cuts your costs drastically and allows you to choose your own caterers and have the option to personalise your event to your own taste. There is no need to hire any extra furniture if you are wanting a cocktail-style dinner, plenty of lounges and seats for your own guests. We think our BYO kicks ass.

Mobile Barber Shop Depot is located at Units 7 & 8, 49 Upton St, Bundall. For more information, phone 0424 560 376 or visit There is nothing more bonding mobilebarbershopdepot.com than the groom and his groomsmen starting the day off with a haircut, beard trim or hot towel shave on the morning of the wedding. It gives them the opportunity to hang out, have some beers or whiskey, play pool, ping pong or pinnies in a very relaxed environment with cool tunes and traditional barber shop banter, the perfect space to get ready. PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE GROOM’S PARTY PACKAGES...

LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2019

Spanning 367 square metres of warehouse space, the venue has an industrial vintage chic vibe, featuring leather chesterfields, fabric antique wingback chairs, unique brick walls and an array of lights hanging from 6-metrehigh ceilings. Photo: White Fox Studios

Welcome to Australia’s first renters community For decades the ‘great Australian dream’ of owning your own home has gone unchallenged. But the world is changing. Owning a home is no longer a reality – or even a desire – for many Australians. But with an imperfect rental system that doesn’t provide long-term security, what does the future hold for those who want to rent indefinitely? The Smith Collective may be the answer. The Smith Collective is a new community made up entirely of rental apartments and townhouses located at the site of the former Commonwealth Games Village at Southport. Australia’s first ‘build to rent’ community, the Smith Collective is designed for living, not just ‘staying’. The build to rent model, which is popular in the United States and Europe, redefines the traditional rental process by forgoing individual landlords and allowing residents to secure long-term leases with the promise of many benefits of home ownership. Property innovators JLL, along with Grocon and UBS Asset Management, are behind the introduction of build to rent in Australia and believe it, and the Smith Collective, will reinvent rental in this country. UBS Asset Management Executive Director Michael Woodrow said, “Our vision is to create a thriving and blended community unlike anything the Gold Coast has seen. Research shows that while an increasing number of people want to live where they work, shop and play, they also yearn for the security of long-term leases and ability to add personal touches to their homes. By maintaining ownership of Smith Collective’s residential offering, we are able to grant those wishes.” Featuring 18 apartment towers and 82 two-storey townhouses (including 172 accessible homes) and a 6280sqm retail hub, the Smith Collective is one of the Gold Coast’s largest urban renewal projects and has already announced plans for new Woolworths and BWS stores that will form part of an ever-expanding boutique retail precinct.

With over seven hectares of parkland, Smith Collective also boasts a huge range of facilities including: • Landscaped gardens • Four gyms • Four swimming pools, • Community veggie and herb gardens • Off-leash dog park • Multiple community BBQs • Walking, running and cycling paths • Homebase community centre Plus much more. Smith Collective is inviting everyone on the Gold Coast to view their new community and tour the 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom townhouses for themselves at a series of fun, free community events in November and December. Choose from Friday Night Bites with food trucks, live entertainment and a pop-up bar, Family Fun Days filled with heaps of activities for the kids or even family movie nights. To find out more visit smithcollective.com.au/whats-on.

My name is:

I- live-here-too

Say farewell to waiting weeks for repairs and not knowing if you’ll be able to renew your lease. Ta-ta to never being able to hang your favourite pictures or paint your walls. And sayonara to sudden rent rises and not being able to own a pug (or two). At Smith Collective you can enjoy a whole new way to rent. As Australia’s first renters only community we know that you want the same things homeowners do… just without the mortgage. So say bye-bye to old style landlords, and hello to being a Smith. 1 & 2 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom townhouses now renting. BOWS

From the catwalk to the red carpet, hair bows are ontrend. Here’s how to make the look work for you this season, thanks to Roxy and Pixie Jacenko, the mother and daughter pioneers behind home-grown label, Pixie’s Bows. ROXY, PIXIE’S BOWS HAVE GROWN INTO A MUST-HAVE ACCESSORY LOVED BY LITTLE GIRLS ALL OVER THE WORLD. WHY DO GIRLS LOVE BOWS SO MUCH?

Bows are such a fun and easy way to transform any outfit into something that’s a bit more colourful and playful. Little girls love to accessorise and make their outfits their own. The best part about bows is that you can have them in so many styles and colours. It makes it very easy to update an outfit and create endless new looks. WHEN DID YOU LAUNCH THE WOMEN’S RANGE AND HOW HAS IT BEEN RECEIVED?

I launched the women’s range in late 2018 after noticing the growing women’s hair accessories trend. There is nothing more sleek or stylish that a classic bow to take a basic ponytail to an elegant up-do. To be honest, I’m completely blown away by the response to the women’s range. That’s why we’ve expanded it recently to include headbands and soon, race-season accessories. FOR WOMEN WHO ARE NEW TO WEARING BOWS, DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLING TIPS?

Keep it simple. The bow is the statement so don’t try and overthink it. A stylish low ponytail with the bow clipped at the top, a full ballerina-style bun with the bow pinned underneath or a simple half up, half down style all work well with bows. The best part about styling with a bow is that it instantly makes any hairstyle look more polished, without having to try too hard.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE CELEBRITY FEEDBACK YOU HAVE RECEIVED

Every time we see Pixie’s Bows on a celebrity tot, it’s still a pinch-me moment! The fact that they’re choosing to wear Pixie’s Bows is incredible feedback in itself as these are someof the best dressed littlies in the world! The quality of the bows is something we often receive feedback on as well as that they’re not only comfortable for little girls to wear as they don’t pull or snag but that they also stay in place. We also get a lot of feedback from celebrities about the great range of colours we have. There is literally a bow for every outfit. Pixie’s Bows are available online and in Myer stores across the country with prices ranging from $9 to $55, including a custom initial range. Shop at pixiespix.com.au and myer.com.au

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR BOWS?

The Pixie’s Bows range has grown to include seasonal styles, colours and prints as well as elastics, headbands and even unicorn headbands. While it’s always fun to have so many options to choose from, our most popular bows continue to be the large and medium bows in block colours. They work well with all styles and outfits and are also great for school. Pixie’s Bows have been seen on some of the world’s most trendy tots including Suri Cruise, Coco and IceT’s daughter Chanel, Sarah Jessica Parker’s twins Tabitha and Marion and Jessica Alba’s daughter Haven. Closer to home, the bows have been worn by Fifi Box’s daughter Trixie Belle and Kate Waterhouse’s daughters Sophia and Grace.

Kiss Goodbye to Lip Nasties

Did you know that carmine, a key ingredient in the humble red lipstick, is made from crushed cochineal beetles? The bugs are native to South America and Mexico and live as parasites on cactus plants. If you want to avoid carmine, you can look out for the word ‘carmine’ on ingredients lists, however it can also go under the names ‘natural red four’, ‘CI 75470’, ‘Crimson Lake’ or ‘cochineal extract.’ We’ve compiled a list of products that are kinder to animals – and your luscious lips.

Hair Trends

With HairArt Boutique owner

SARAH SUMNER

How long have you been a hairdresser? I’ve been hairdressing for almost 20 years. I’ve owned my own business for nearly six years. What attracted you to hairdressing? It is in my blood as my Nan was a hairdresser. Despite an interest in a career in journalism, I think hairdressing was inevitable. I never chose it; I just fell into it. How many long-term clients do you have and why do you think they keep coming back to HairArt? I’ve lost count of the number of loyal clients over the years. Some have been coming to me since I started hairdressing in Australia. I’ve met many amazing women over the years – women that have truly become my friends. Our appointments are more like an overdue catch up with a friend rather than a hair appointment. Many clients have become part of our HairArt family. What are the hottest hair trends for 2019? It can be anything from the simple hair accessories such as clips, scarves or scrunchies to dress up or dress down a hairstyle. Hairstyles are still being worn very soft and textured whether it’s a simple topknot or a beachy wave. Our clean, low-maintenance baby blonde foils will always be on trend.HairArt is an official Olaplex salon. Why is Olaplex all the rage right now and how does it work? Olaplex is magic! There really is nothing else on the market like it. It has really changed the industry. To be able to achieve the results we achieve, while maintaining the integrity of the hair, is something that hasn’t been done before. The results speak for themselves. No salon is truly “blonde specialist” without Olaplex. Olaplex is a bond repairing system and comes in six steps. One of the big misconceptions about Olaplex is that it’s just for blondes, but Olaplex is for anyone and everyone that wants the ultimate products for their hair. How important is it to update techniques and skills? We always like to be on top of our game. We want to know what’s the latest product or trend in the market and make sure we’re passing that on to our clients. Our distributors are one of the biggest distributors in Australia. They always make sure we have what’s new, as soon as it’s available.

UNDERSTATED

COMFORT

A recent survey reveals that while 65 percent of women have more than five brasin their wardrobe, most women tend to only wear one or two of these bras on rotation every week.*

Finding a well-fitting, comfortable bra can be a challenge but it doesn’t have to be. Introducing Berlei’s new bra range that makes an impression, without leaving one.

Berlei’s most innovative bra to date, UnderState, is a collection that doesn’t draw attention to itself. The range of modern elevated basic t-shirt bras are designed to be worn every day of the week. Berlei UnderState looks deceptively simple yet it is the culmination of over 100 years of superior bra engineering. Each element has been masterfully crafted with comfort and fit at the forefront of mind. Designed to go unnoticed under clothing, the UnderState range hugs like a second skin and incorporates four-way stretch foam cups to keep you covered and move with you. The bra sits comfortably against the skin, while also offering discreet shaping and lifting. Designed to support women of every age, shape and size, UnderState delivers multiple styles that provide shaping, smoothing, softness and ultimate comfort. Berlei’s head designer Karlene Simring said the range had been designed to mould and flatter a woman’s natural shape. “Celebrating diversity is an integral feature of Berlei as a brand,” she said. “UnderState offers women a personalised choice, accommodating size and coverage preferences, as well as offering a harmonious colour palette of skin, core and blush tones.

UnderState and Berlei are about embracing difference and celebrating individuality.” Other key fit factors include super-soft microfibre fabrication, sueded for close-to-skin comfort, and an ultra-thin infinity-edge neckline for a seamless look under clothing. Beauty ingredient of the moment – avocado oil

1.Beauty ingredient of the

moment – avocado oil From avocado shampoos to creams and lip balms, the super fruit is shaping up as a powerhouse in the beauty industry. According to Dr Visay Viengkhou, G&M Cosmetics’ R&D chemist, avocados are on trend because they contain over 25 vital nutrients, including Vitamin C. “Avocados contain wonderful natural active ingredients rich in healthy fatty acids, vitamins and super antioxidants that can improve your skin from the inside,” said Dr Viengkhou. “Avocado oil helps transport active ingredients into the skin, that helps to maintain its firmness and structure.” The Australian Creams MKII range (including Avocado Oil Deep Moisturising Cream) costs between $4.99 and $8.99 and is available at selected pharmacies, online retailers, health stores and health practitioners.

3. Save Water –

drink champagne Liquid calories can add up fast – and that’s before you even get to the grazing table. The great news for champagne lovers is that it is one of the lowest calorie alcoholic options with a standard glass of bubbles setting you back just 84 calories. Other low-calorie options include vodka and soda (97 calories), light beer (103 calories), white wine (121 calories) and martini (124 calories). Now that’s a reason to celebrate.

If you’re trying to be healthy but save money, a good rule of thumb has been to splurge only on certified organic produce that contains large amounts of pesticides. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) makes this easier by releasing an annual list called the “Dirty Dozen”, which names the 12 pieces of produce that contain the most pesticides. The EWG Dirty Dozen list for 2019 includes strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery and potatoes. ewg.org

When it comes to designing a bridal collection, Claire considers something deeper – that one day the bride will look back at her photos, and maybe down the line her children or grandchildren will too. In the Timeless Collection, Claire’s goal is to create a wedding dress which truly portrays each bride, to give her a beauty that endures the test of time.

Styled by Sasha Sasha Pine says she is ‘living the dream’. The mother of four is the founder of Styled by Sasha, a bespoke event styling business on the Gold Coast. After many years as a national-level swimmer, Sasha said her styling career satisfied her perfectionist personality. “I absolutely love details,” she said. “I believe it’s the little things that make a big difference. I specialise in weddings, events, parties and special occasion planning and styling. I love styling all events, big and small. The pressure I put on myself is high no matter what the size. I am so lucky to have a wedding coming up in August. I’m planning, coordinating and styling the entire event. It’s for one of my longest standing clients. I can’t tell you how excited I am. The stress is enormous, and I absolutely thrive on that. I perform well under pressure and use it to my advantage.” Sasha said the most rewarding part of her work was creating amazing memories for her clients. “It’s not just the fact the event looks great. It’s all the little details I add to events based on what I learn about my clients. It hits a spot that triggers emotions and hopefully that will last with them forever.” For more information, email sasha@styled-by-sasha.com or phone 0411 120 201. Improve Posture with Wearable Technology Bad posture is not just unattractive — it can lead to serious back and neck problems. According to many reviewers on Amazon, there’s a discreet, affordable device that really works, and no one needs to know you’re wearing it. The device adheres to your upper back with sticky bandages. Whenever you slouch, it gently vibrates, providing real-time posture feedback. Upright Technologies has just unveiled the all-new Upright GO 2, complementing the award-winning GO Original which launched in 2017. The new model is 50 percent smaller, three-times as sensitive and boasts an improved, longer-lasting three-day battery life. Additionally, the adhesive by which it attaches itself to the user’s back is 40 percent bigger, providing extra comfort. Sync it to your Apple Watch, and you can even get a subtle, private notification rather than a buzz. The buzz is adjustable for intensity and sensitivity. Upright GO 2 users can track their progress on the iOS and Android app and view their latest stats, posture history and overall usage. Users can also develop custom training programs and put the GO 2 into Tracking Mode to record data without emitting vibrations. Todd Lynton, Australian Vice President of Upright Technologies, described the new version as a game-changer in the posture trainer market. “It’s the best, simplest, fastest and most natural way to improve your posture within just one to two weeks,” he said. Priced at $149.95, The Upright GO 2 is available at Apple Stores, Officeworks, Bing Lee and at uprightpose.com.

DIOR Dior models at the Cruise 2020 Show in Morocco.

Head-to-Toe Dior Christian Dior held its Cruise 2020 show in the magical Moroccan city of Marrakech – and it was as star-studded as you might expect. Celebrities who wore Dior included actresses Lupita Nyong’o, Jessica Alba and Shailene Woodley, as well as model Karlie Kloss. Presented by Dior’s top creative, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the show celebrated the richness of traditional Moroccan cultures as well as Dior’s legendary heritage.

Karlie Kloss commanded attention in a plunging black short-sleeved dress, showing off her small waist with a thin belt. The supermodel chose sheer black polka-dot pumps with a pointed toe and carried a pebbled leather Dior bag.

Shailene Woodley was stylish in a striped gown with a low neckline and sparkly appliqués throughout. The Big Little Lies actress wore gold statement earrings and carried a blue clutch featuring Dior’s bee emblem.

Jessica Alba wore a flowing see-through strapless gown with a floral pattern and accessorised with gold hoop earrings.

Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o was chic in a leggy gown with a flowing floral shirt. Lupita pulled together her look with black anklelength sandals and a leather Dior-logoed saddle belt.

The Last Straw

The first plastic straw you ever used will be on the planet long after you’re not. Australians use over 10 million straws a day, which now feature in the top ten of all ocean pollutants. The masterminds behind new glassware brand, Wave, have developed a new concept to replace plastic straws. With revolutionary, patented DualChamber Technology, Wave Glass has an internal wall that sits down into the vessel – separating it into two chambers. One chamber holds liquid mixed with crushed ice, garnish or whatever features in your preferred drink. The other vessel acts as the drinking chamber, allowing only the chilled liquid from the bottom of the vessel to be enjoyed. While there has only been a select number of the bespoke, handblown glassware made so far, Wave’s ambition is to replace straws completely across bars far and wide. wave-glass.com

Grazing Tables are the Hottest Party Food Trend for 2019 We all love the choice that a buffet brings. After all, nothing quite brings a group of people together like crowding around a table teeming with antipasto delicacies or a helpyourself gourmet cheese selection. The Grazing Table Company has proven that buffets can be works of art, giving the humble spread a modern makeover. Business owner and foodie Tracey Vogel spent almost two decades in the food industry before embarking on her most exciting adventure yet. Everyone strives to create a memorable event and The Grazing Table Company can help create an unforgettable food experience at the heart of any occasion. “I’ve always loved food, and even more so the environment that it creates when people gather around it,” she said. “Food is almost always at the centrepiece of great get-togethers and events. Working in the restaurants and businesses I worked in over the years didn’t allow me the freedom to put my signature on the food I was creating. With my passion for food and a passion for creativity, it seemed inevitable that the two would come together. Whereas many artists put paint on a canvas, my art is food on a table. I love telling stories and bringing out the romantic nature that food inspires. Tracey creates a custom experience, complete with props and themed elements. Dietary restrictions are catered for. HAILEY BIEBER A Model Life

Hailey Bieber Date of birth: November 22, 1996 Birthplace: Tucson, Arizona Height: 171cm Modelling agency: IMG Parents: Stephen Baldwin, actor, and

Kennya Deodato, graphic designer. Uncle and Aunty: Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, actors. Sibling: Alaia, born January 23, 1993. Alaia is a successful model. Other relatives: Baldwin family (paternal) and Eumir Deodato (maternal grandfather). Eumir is a Brazilian pianist, composer, arranger and record producer. He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning the 1974 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Photo: Denis Makarenko, Bigstock

Hailey Bieber may be married to one of the most famous musicians on the planet, but the supermodel has worked hard to prove she is talented in her own right. With 20 million Instagram followers, her own makeup line and a global brand ambassador, Hailey is an it-girl with a Christian message. On the runway, she’s walked for multiple A-list designers, such as Elie Saab, Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger and Moschino. However, modelling wasn’t always Hailey’s plan. She had a normal, suburban childhood. It was laid-back, even though her father is actor Stephen Baldwin and there are pictures of her on red carpets as a child. Hailey’s parents are both devout Christians. Stephen Baldwin now dedicates his acting career to

46

making faith-based content. Hailey’s mother is Kennya Deodato, a Brazilian of Italian and Portuguese descent. The statuesque beauty home-schooled Hailey and her older sister Alaia, raising them as Evangelical Christians. Hailey attends Hillsong Church, the same church her husband Justin attends. Although Hailey admits a big part of her work is her ‘body and face’, she describes modelling as ‘my job’ and regards church and Jesus as ‘a real thing for me’. Hailey often shares Bible messages on social media. She told her Instagram followers: “I was raised in church. I was brought up in that life, and I think that it’s very important for everybody to be in touch with their spirituality and to LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2019

Not everybody is going to believe in the God that I believe in, but it’s something that I’m not afraid to share with people because I know how it inspires me – how it positively affects my life ... I think that God kind of put me in the place in my life to not be quiet about it, not be quiet about Him, but to reach people and to inspire people.” Hailey practised ballet for 12 years and seemed destined for a classical ballet career before a training injury ended her aspirations. The first modelling agency Hailey signed with was New York agency Ford Models and her first commercial campaign was for the clothing brand French connection in 2014. In October that year, Hailey made her runway debut

walking for Topshop and French designer Sonia Rykiel. After being photographed for American Vogue in 2015, Hailey’s career blossomed – and so did her love life. From outward appearances, Hailey and Justin’s whirlwind romance seemed to happen overnight, however their first fateful meeting was back in 2009 when Hailey was 13 and Justin was 15. As the story goes, the pair first met when Hailey was given tickets by her uncle Alec Baldwin to meet teen pop sensation Justin at a Today Show appearance. While the setting may have been a fan meet-and-greet, Hailey remembers thinking at the time that Justin was ‘cute’ but didn’t give it much more thought. Their friendship didn’t blossom until a few years later when they reconnected at

Another video by Hailey is titled the ‘5 Minute Face’. “I grew up in a household where it was very clean eating, organic, no junk food, so I like to stick to that still because what you put in your body reflects on the outside,” Hailey said. The model made headlines earlier this year after she was mocked for saying she was “grateful” for the little things in life on Instagram. On April 20, Hailey posted: “Taking the time to really be grateful for the smallest things in life goes a very long way for your soul. It never hurts to remind yourself to have gratitude, even for the littlest things.” A follower left a snarky comment slamming Hailey over her husband’s estimated fortune. The follower posted: “My husband is worth 265 million but it’s the little things that make me happy ha ha ha.” Hailey quickly responded, reminding the commenter that money doesn’t buy happiness and they should not judge what they don’t know. “You can be the wealthiest person in the planet and be miserable. Not fair to judge people’s circumstances from the outside. Am I not allowed to be grateful to sit in the sunshine and enjoy my day like a regular person?”

Hillsong church. The couple tied the knot in a non-religious ceremony in September 2018 in New York in a secret wedding after Justin proposed in the Bahamas last July following two years of on-off dating. Hailey changed her name from Baldwin to Bieber on social media and requested a trademark license to use the name ‘Hailey Bieber’ for commercial purposes. In April 2019, Hailey filed a trademark for Bieber Beauty which covers everything from cosmetics, perfumes and hair products. Although Bieber Beauty hasn’t been launched, it is likely to be an ecofriendly brand with an emphasis on natural beauty. Known for her natural glow, Hailey is an advocate for clean beauty and doesn’t often wear a full face of makeup. Mix moisturiser with your foundation to make your foundation more sheer and less thick. Try to eat a good breakfast before a long day. Hailey’s favourite brekky foods include scrambled eggs, bacon, avocado and pancakes. Apply a generous amount of moisturiser in the morning and at night. Wear ultra-hydrating masks on long-haul flights. Don’t go to sleep without taking makeup off. Drinks heaps of water. Hailey can’t live without lip balm. Her favourites are Eucerin’s Aquaphor and Vaseline Original. Hailey’s hair tends to be fine when she brushes it too much. She always carries L’Oréal Professional’s Pro Fibre Auto Charge Cream refills to nourish her hair and mask her damaged lengths. Hailey describes the product as a ‘magic concoction’ that has saved her more than once on a big photo shoot. When she is feeling stressed, Hailey enjoys a cup of calming tea. Vanilla is a favourite. Hailey likes to detox with ginger tea or a water and lemon drink. To recharge mentally, Hailey relies on self-help meditation, therapy and reading. She recommends Daniel Siegel’s book, Mindsight – the New Science of Personal curb Transformation, to anxiety. “I believe so strongly in therapy, meditation, and faith — believing in something. That’s always the answer to me before anything else,” Hailey said. Sources: The Tonight Show staring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with James Corden, You Tube, instyle.com

LIFESTYLE

MEET

Amazing Alex Weighing 108 kilograms at just 23, Alex had resigned herself to being a ‘big girl’ forever. After years of dieting, exercising and struggling to keep the weight off, Alex underwent a Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy. Two years later, Alex fell pregnant with her first child and had a healthy pregnancy, labour and delivery. With a second child on the way, Alex believes she would have struggled to fall pregnant naturally if she hadn’t had the surgery.

Name: Alex Thomson Occupation: Medical receptionist Family members: Fiancé Kevin Large and 8-month-old son Kaison Weight when you were at your heaviest: 108kg Current weight: 67kg (4 months’ pregnant); lowest weight is 61kg Current height: 163cm Current BMI: 24.8 Current age: 26 Were you overweight as a child? Yes. I was always the biggest girl in primary school. As a mother to an eight-month-old son and another baby on the way, how has the surgery affected family life? Without having the gastric sleeve surgery, I believe I would’ve struggled to fall pregnant naturally and possibly even have a healthy pregnancy. My pregnancy with my son was amazing, with no morning sickness, a healthy weight gain of 9kgs and he was born a healthy 8 lb 7 oz (3.85kg) at 38 weeks 6 days. I kept active during my pregnancy by walking and I even participated in WLSA’s Gold Coast Marathon event, completing the 5.7km walk at 6 months pregnant with my fiancé Kevin. My outlook on life has changed and I will always strive to ensure I am healthy and leading an active lifestyle for my children. Did you consult with WLSA on nutrition and weight gain during pregnancy? I spoke with a dietitian from WLSA to ensure as a bariatric patient I was getting enough nutrients and

48

protein in to ensure a healthy pregnancy. They were able to help me choose the right foods to eat due to only being able to eat smaller meals, and I started eating 6 small meals a day to ensure I was getting enough in. Is it generally advisable for women who undergo a weight-loss procedure to postpone pregnancy until their weight stabilises – typically at least 12 to 18 months after surgery? Did this apply to you? Yes. Not only is it advised to wait at least 18 months, so you are able to reach your weight-loss potential, but nutritionally you want to ensure you are able to give the baby enough to grow, without risking your health and wellbeing as well. Pregnancy can be tough regardless of being a bariatric patient or not, and by waiting the recommended time you are giving your baby the best chance for them to grow healthily. At your heaviest, what made you decide to contact WLSA? I weighed 108kg at my heaviest. I was 23 years old and at that point in my life I truly made myself believe I was just going to be a ‘big girl’ forever. I went into denial about how much weight I was slowly putting on each year that passed. I became comfortable and just learnt how to hide myself well from the crowds. Being overweight affected my confidence for so many years, I doubted myself constantly and never put myself out there as I was afraid of rejection and judgement. How did the WLSA approach differ from other weightloss solutions?

I found that other surgical places didn’t offer any support post-surgery and that was the main factor in my decision with choosing WLSA. I knew I would need support as prior to proceeding with surgery I felt like I couldn’t do it on my own.

How would you describe the support you received? The whole team at WLSA were really supportive throughout my whole journey. There were no stupid questions, and they were there to listen to my highs and lows. I was made to feel like family by not just the staff, but the WLSA community in the private support page on Facebook. Whenever I needed a question answered someone was there to assist me. What type of procedure did you choose and why did you choose it? I choose the Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy. After speaking with both the nurse and surgeon they advised this would be the most suitable procedure for me. When did you have your procedure? 24th April 2016 Is there a reason you choose this date? I was 23 years old, and my incredible parents gave me the opportunity to have this surgery as they could see I wasn’t happy within myself. I am so grateful for them. How has weight-loss surgery changed your life? I have gained my confidence back. I no longer sit on the sidelines and waste my life away. I was able to fall pregnant naturally and deliver a healthy baby naturally with no complications pre or post-birth. I get to run around with him and take a million photos and not be ashamed or concerned about what angle is best and whether I look okay. I’ve learnt to love myself and nourish my body to ensure I am around to watch my children grow up. I want to be the best mum I can be for my kids. Prior to surgery I wouldn’t have had

the confidence to put myself out there and in turn my son wouldn’t have gotten the best version of me. Has it been difficult to adjust to smaller portion sizes and other lifestyle habits? At the start, yes. It took a while for my mind to adjust. However now, with eating 6 small meals a day I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. I still enjoy going out and being social. I just order accordingly and will either just get an entrée, or I share a meal with my partner. I don’t let the fact that I can only eat a small portion stop me from enjoying my life now. Can you still eat your favourite foods? Yes. I believe in balance and still enjoy naughty treats every now and then. I believe balance is very important in all weight-loss journeys. A treat for me prior to having surgery would’ve been a whole block of chocolate, some chips and soft drink most nights whilst I binge ate my emotions away. Now, I enjoy a row or two of chocolate every now and then and feel satisfied and content. Are there any people who have inspired you along the way? I believe I inspired myself. That may sound overconfident, but I spent my entire teenage years and early adulthood years not believing in myself and hiding away. Every little goal I reached postsurgery I was over the moon and the belief in myself started to come back. I knew I could achieve great things, and with my newfound tool I was able to start living to my full potential. I have the most supportive fiancé and family that I am forever grateful for, and now my son and baby number two inspire me every day to be the best mum I can be for them.

142 million followers: Kim Kardashian gets more publicity from one Instagram post than many A-list celebrities get in a month. This is partly due to her self-promotion on her Instagram, her since-deleted blog, and on her family’s TV show, Keeping up with the Kardashians. Every time Kim K wears an item and mentions it on her Instagram, she gets a kickback from the company she represents. We’re talking thousands, sometimes millions, of dollars.

MIGHTY MAGNESIUM what you need to know

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM?

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body and is required for 1200 bodily functions. Magnesium ions act as enzyme co-factors in reducing, controlling and moderating cellular oxidative damage. According to the World Health Organisation, less than 60 percent of adults meet the adequate intake values for magnesium. This is due to poor oral supplementation and changes in modern dietary habits.

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM OIL MADE OF AND IS IT SUPERIOR TO ORAL ALTERNATIVES?

Considered a form of brine, magnesium oil is made from a mixture of magnesium chloride flakes and water. When these substances merge, the resulting oil-like liquid offers transdermal qualities which enable the body to effectively and safely absorb the nutrient-rich benefits of magnesium verses inferior oral alternatives.

MAGNESIUM HEALTH BENEFITS: - Relief from muscular injuries, aches and pains - Cramping and restless legs - Insomnia and poor sleep quality - Headaches and migraines - Joint pain and arthritic pain - Healthy bone density - PMT-related cramps and tension - Mild skin irritations and inflammation

Women of Inf luence Great Debate

Are soft skills the mark of a successful leader? This was the topic of debate at the Women of Influence Annual Great Debate at RACV Royal Pines Resort. Influenced by New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, the affirmative team were victors on the day, buoyed by the banking and legal powers of Jamie Preston (Westpac Private Bank), Kathleen Simpson (DV Lawyers) and the hilarious Petrina Macpherson (Minter Ellison). Beauty

Beauty is skin-deep: why our complexion is so

e’re all attracted to a beautiful face. We like to look at them, we feel drawn to them and we aspire to have one. Many researchers and others have investigated what we humans identify as “beautiful”: symmetry, large evenly spaced eyes, white teeth, a wellproportioned nose and of course, a flawless complexion. The skin is of utmost importance when people judge someone as beautiful. When choosing a mate, men rank female beauty more highly than women rate male appearance. Female beauty is thought to signal youth, fertility and health. Beauty can also signal high status. People with “plain looks” earn about 10 percent less than people who are average-looking, who in turn earn around 5 percent less than people who are good-looking.

Skin as a marker of health and beauty

Even the best facial structure can be unbalanced by skin that is flawed. There are many skin conditions that are perfectly natural, yet because of our beliefs around skin and health, these can cause the sufferers extreme self-consciousness. Examples include: chloasma, the facial pigmentation that often occurs during pregnancy; starburst telangiectasias, the broken capillaries that appear on the lower thighs and calves of many women as they age; and dermatosis papulosa nigra, the brown marks that accumulate on the upper cheeks and temples, especially in people of Asian or African descent. Chloasma (pigmentation) often affects pregnant women. Teenagers with acne are more likely to withdraw socially. It may

60

impair school performance and result in severe depression and even suicide. There are hundreds of skin diseases that can change facial appearance, including rashes such as rosacea and skin cancers. Surgery for skin cancer can leave noticeable marks and scars that make the survivor selfconscious.

Industries built on our self-consciousness

Perhaps alongside the greying of the hair, skin is the most visible sign of ageing. As we age the skin changes. These changes are most pronounced in the areas exposed daily to the sun, such as the face, neck and the backs of our hands. The skin sags and blemishes and scars accumulate. Despite having no negative physical health effects, acne can cause major self-esteem problems in youth. People spend a lot of money in attempts to regain their youthful appearance. The global cosmetics industry is worth

important to us

about $717 billion. Sales of skin and sun care products, make-up and colour cosmetics generate over 36 percent of the worldwide cosmetic market. There the skin thins, loses volume and elasticity and becomes dull. Dark rings develop under the eyes. Wrinkles appear. These changes are most pronounced in the areas exposed daily to the sun, such as the face, neck and the backs of our hands. We use foundation makeup to conceal freckles and blemishes, moisturisers and fillers to hide dryness, concealers to disguise broken capillaries and pimples. And increasingly people are using Botox to remove wrinkles, fillers to replace volume, and laser to remove flaws from the top layer of skin. We should all use sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage and prescription medications to cure the skin of diseases when necessary. We’re living longer, working later and remarrying more. We’re having to trade on our beauty much later in life. In a better world, beauty would be irrelevant. Unfortunately, in our world it’s one of our most valuable assets. The best we can do is to protect our skin from sunburn, seek advice from a dermatologist when we notice any skin problems, and accept we weren’t born with the skin of Beyoncé. By Rodney Sinclair Professor of Dermatology, University of Melbourne

For better or worse, Kim Kardashian’s appearance has come to signify a sort of physical perfection. LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2019

Boutique Tasmania

– Girls Only Style

In today’s world, the way we are choosing to travel is changing dramatically. We are increasingly influenced by social media, magazines and putting our own needs first. For many busy women, the idea of the perfect getaway means a holiday away from crowds, theme parks and chaos. It can be a time for self-reflection, challenging ourselves and doing what we want to do. It is becoming more acceptable for women to choose a little “me time” every now and again. Introducing the perfect solution – Boutique Travel Holidays for Women. To make the adventure even better, these tours are run by professional photographers who are there to not only guide you on your dream getaway, but help you create the perfect memories. You don’t have to be an experienced photographer to take part. Being small groups – six to eight ladies – the trips are aimed at taking you to the next level of your craft, whether that be how to get the best from your instant pocket camera to how to shoot on a DSLR and edit your shots to a professional standard. The Bay of Fires is the 40 kilometres between Eddystone Point and Binalong Bay. It’s renowned for the huge orange granite boulders littering the beach. The rocks are coloured from lichen, a harmless algae which contrasts strikingly with the whitest of sandy beaches and crystal-clear water. The beaches are deserted, the seas can be both moody or tranquil, depending on the weather, and the landscape is postcard-perfect.

The tour culminates at Salamanca Markets, one of Hobart’s most visited tourist attractions. Situated alongside the waterfront, you can buy everything from local flowers and food to beautiful pictures by local artists, artwork, jewellery and Tasmaniandesigned clothes.

Oyster Bay Tours offers the unique opportunity for visitors to farm for their own oysters. You can’t get fresher than that.

One of the best ways to truly appreciate Freycinet National Park is a scenic flight with local airline Freycinet Air.

Freycinet National Park and Lodge provide one of the most luxurious experiences of the trip. Nestled amongst native trees and wildlife, the cabins are cleverly designed to make you feel like you are in the National Park all on your own. Your own outdoor hot tub completes the experience where you can enjoy local Freycinet Vineyard wines whilst soaking in the fresh mountain air.

If you’ve ever wanted to do a road trip of Tasmania, spending the week with a group of ladies is an experience you will never forget.

Although there are planned activities, the small groups mean that you can alter the tour to suit your personal pleasures.

Think Thelma and Louise meets Eat Pray Love. A bunch of like-minded ladies travelling to some of Australia’s most stunning destinations, enjoying scenic flights, winery tours, mountain walks and much more. – Jules Ingall, professional photographer and tour leader

Exercise is generally perceived as being beneficial for an individual’s health. Melbourne-based neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon, Dr Michael Wong, sees firsthand many people pursuing fitness programs to improve their health, but unfortunately hurting their neck and back after doing exercises incorrectly. For those who have injured their neck or back, they are more likely to suffer further neck or back pain relapse. For those experiencing severe pain, it can be terrifying to resume a sustainable exercise routine. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), the top fitness trend in the world in 2019 according to the American College of Sports Medicine, is a training technique involving short bursts of intense exercises, followed by short periods of recovery. It is often used by personal trainers to help people lose weight quickly, but it carries an increased injury risk compared to lower intensity workouts. Dr Wong said fast-paced spin classes built on the HIIT concept are too intense for those not in optimal physical condition and can contribute to back pain and joint strain.

Dr Michael Wong WHY EXERCISE ISN’T ALWAYS GOOD FOR YOU – NEUROSURGEON

Dr Wong’s Tips: • • • • • • • •

Walking and swimming are a good cardiovascular workout for any fitness level. If you engage with a personal trainer, focus on exercises that improve the body’s ability to function in everyday activities. The personal trainer will prescribe exercises that strengthen quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings and core muscles. Injuries can be prevented by warming up the joints before each workout. Start a workout slow and steady, with a gradual increase in intensity and duration, especially if you haven’t exercised for a long time. You may need to take more than a day between strenuous workouts for muscle recovery. When using gym equipment, ensure you are using correct techniques to reduce the risk of exacerbating prior strains. Drink water before and after exercise to avoid dehydration. A visit to a multidisciplinary pain clinic can assist with a quick and safe recovery. These clinics provide access to a range of experts, including a neurosurgeon, physician and physiotherapist.

Edmunds discusses everything from ditching debt to building savings: from investing to insurance – and all in a language that is easy to understand.

In this compelling New York Times bestseller, The Moment of Lift – How Empowering Women Changes the World, Melinda Gates shares lessons she has learned from the inspiring people she has met during her work and travels around the world. The narrative is backed up by startling data as the American philanthropist addresses issues that most need our attention – from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. For the first time, Gates writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage.

FIVE TOP Tips you need to know BEFORE Renovating your

Unit or Townhouse

Living in in a Body Corporate is unlike owning your own freehold land. As a member of a Body Corporate you are required to follow the rules and regulations applying to your Scheme. Consequently, any maintenance or improvements you wish to make to your unit or townhouse ought to be well thought out and planned to keep the Body Corporate, Committee, owners and occupiers happy – after all it is ‘community living’. To assist you with dealing with your Body Corporate, we recommend that you implement the following five quick tips in your next project: 1. Obtaining Body Corporate approval Be proactive! In almost all cases, you will require Body Corporate approval before ripping out your kitchen or bathroom. Approvals can be sought from the Committee or at a General Meeting depending on the extent of the renovation. If the renovation total cost is under $3,000 and the renovation will not detract from the appearance of the building or will result in a breach of your duties as an owner or occupier (i.e. cause nuisance), then approval can be granted by your Committee. In the event your unit renovation will exceed $3,000, you will need to submit a motion at the next general meeting where all owners can decide by ordinary resolution to approve the works. It is best to get this step completed early as your general meeting only comes around once a year.

2. Prepare a Scope of Works Speak with your Contractors and prepare a summary of the works which are going to be undertaken. Provide the Scope of Works together with your request for Body Corporate approval. This will save you time when seeking Body Corporate approval i.e. it will avoid the “to-ing and fro-ing” and questions from the Committee. 3. Check your by-laws We like to say “the by-laws is your Bible” - don’t allow it to collect dust! The by-laws may identify conditions required to be met in order to undertake the renovation. You can obtain a copy of your by-laws from your Body Corporate Manager. It is likely that some of the conditions in which the Committee impose on granting you approval will already be contained within the by-laws (i.e. where Contractors can park, whether padding is required for the elevators etc). 4. Engage Appropriate Contractors It is important that you engage the appropriate licensed Contractors to ensure that the works comply with current building standards. It is likely that the renovation will not be approved in circumstances where you are recommending that the works are carried out by a lay person or the classic ‘handy man’. 5. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate. It is always good practice to keep the Committee or on-site manager informed throughout your project. This is, of course, unless you want a battle on your hands. It is also prudent to explain to the Contractors the requirements/conditions of the by-Laws in completing renovations at the scheme.
