Label at large Australia – as most of us know – is ahead of the rest of the world. It’s autumn in Europe and fall in America but spring has sprung in the lucky country. Gold Coast girls and guys love to make the most of winter by dressing in more formal attire. Label spotted some very well dressed women wearing coats and boots with eye-catching accessories. We were more than impressed with the men’s fashion scene. Trench coats and suits were on show in all the best places. Now the weather is warming up it’s time to keep to trend with the newest trans-seasonal styles. Check out the monochromatic styles, it’s black and white from morning to night. Wear the basics with a splash of bright colour. Glamour is key for women. Men take on a cool urban image. Check out the stores for the hot new looks in spring racing carnival attire. We found some great new spots to wine and dine, so go out and celebrate spring.

fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of the girl group Destiny’s Child. This glossy girl moved on to become a songwriter, record producer, actress and model. Destiny’s Child sold more than 50 million records worldwide, Beyoncé has sold more than 75 million records in her career to date. In June 2003, Beyoncé released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. It was one of the year’s most successful albums and signalled her viability as a solo artist. The success of her solo albums established Beyoncé as one of the most marketable artists in the music industry. She has now expanded her career to encompass acting and product endorsement. Her acting career began in Carmen: A Hip Hopera in 2001. She starred in the lead role in the 2006 film adaptation of the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Label enters spring with the best of everything in black and white from morning to night. The ultimate is black and white diamonds from 5th Avenue Jewellers. The ultra sensational jewels are a girl’s best friend at any age and any hour.
Black diamonds are the most rare and valuable jewel on earth. Revered since the beginning of civilisation these glittering stones are worn by the most privileged. Diamond expert and 5th Avenue Jewellers general manager Nicole Suhrbier says the history of the precious stones is fascinating. “The most famous black diamonds include the cushion cut 67.50 carat Orlov Diamond, the heart shaped 115.34 carat Gruosi Diamond, and the 312.24 carat old Moghul cut Spirit of Grisogono diamond,” she says. Nicole says the Black Orlov is currently set in a brooch surrounded by 108 white diamonds and suspended from a 124 diamond necklace. “The striking contrast between the black and white diamonds in this piece was inspired by Swiss jeweller Fawaz Gruosi. He is known as the king of black diamonds and credited with launching the current fashion with his spectacular ’96 collection. “Cartier launched the famous Salt and Pepper Collection featuring black and white diamonds. This was a tremendous success and made black and white diamond jewellery an international icon.” Nicole says the large black diamonds are the rarest of all. “Most black diamonds are suitable for industrial purposes only,” she says. “Glittering gem quality black diamonds are extremely rare and difficult to cut. The Gruosi Diamond took three years to cut.
“The Gruosi Diamond came from India in 1998 as a rough stone weighing 300.12 carats. The heart-shaped diamond was cut in Antwerp by one of the world’s most revered black diamond cutting specialists. After cutting and polishing the diamond weighed 184.78 carats,” Nicole says. The colour of black diamonds is due to tiny hematite or magnetite inclusions. Unlike other black gemstones, black diamonds have the unique and beautiful lustre of other diamonds. They are mainly found in Russia, Brazil and Africa. This glittering jet-black stone is now the most desirable and beautiful contrast for white diamonds and other gems. Nicole says black diamonds are most spectacular when combined with white diamonds. “Black diamonds adorn rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. This wearable art is prestigious, expensive and very collectable. “Powerful and mysterious black and white diamonds appeal to independent, self confident, and elegant women,” she says. Nicole’s wealth of knowledge can guide jewellery buyers to the best examples of black and white diamonds available in Australia today. Visit the elegant but informal 5th Avenue Jewellers at shop 7 on the ground floor of the Arcade at Pacific Fair and explore the wonderful world of black and white diamonds. LABEL Australian icon Olivia Newton-John uses her celebrity status to raise funds for cancer research. Since Olivia famously survived a cancer scare she has devoted her time to helping others. Now Gold Coast based and internationally famous jeweller Ann Middleton OAM is helping Olivia in her quest. Ann says the journey began when Olivia asked her to design a pendant to help raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal. “I worked with my team at Middleton’s - A World of Jewellery at Marina Mirage, Main Beach to come up with a suitable design,” Ann says. “Olivia loved the pendant we designed. It features a magnificent South Sea pearl circled with diamonds. “I called the piece the Circle of Life. It was sold at the first showing at Olivia’s Gaia Retreat. We have now decided to create a limited series of up to four Circle of Life pieces,” she says.
Diamonds and pearls help raise funds for research
Ann says it is an honour and a privilege to be able to raise funds to help people with cancer. “Olivia works so hard for this wonderful cause, it is my way of contributing,” she says. “When the Circle of Life piece was completed, Olivia asked me to create a ring for the Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Appeal fund raising auction at the prestigious Myer Ball in Melbourne. Olivia was really taken with this magnificent ring. “Olivia’s husband John Easterling knew how much she loved the ring and bid the highest amount at the auction. He bought it as a first wedding anniversary gift. They are a delightful couple. Olivia was the inspiration for the ring, I am thrilled that it is now hers,” Ann says.
The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal shines on with Ann Middleton’s Circle of Life signature pieces.

LABEL The LeGassick family has earned a reputation for exclusive designs and handcrafted jewellery from around the world. The company began in 1992 when Ted and Shirley LeGassick purchased their first store at Logan Hyperdome on Brisbane’s southside. Their first workshop kept one jeweller, one watchmaker, and three sales assistants very busy. The LeGassick name and reputation grew in tandem with the demand for their services and exclusive jewellery. In 1993, one of Ted and Shirley’s three sons, Wade joined the family business. Wade began an apprenticeship with his parent’s company. A few years later, Wade’s brother Kenton joined the family firm. Wade and Kenton completed their studies with exceptional results in jewellery craft. The eldest of the LeGassick brothers, Darryn, joined the rest of the family in 1998 to help in the general management of the business. In 2000, the second LeGassick store opened at the Runaway Bay Shopping Village. The first Gold Coast business employed two watchmakers, six jewellers, five diamond graders, a gem setter and a highly experienced sales team.
LeGassick – a successful family saga LeGassick style is often described as classic and simple, yet beautifully refined, and always subtlety different. Traditions and innovations meet at this family jeweller.
The company grew rapidly and a third store opened at Robina Town Centre. All three stores operate within the company standards. They each offer exceptional jewellery and service. Shirley and Darryn LeGassick attend the major international jewellery trade fairs. They visit Italy, Germany, France, and Belgium in search of the most beautiful designs and quality craftsmanship. Family members select every piece in keeping with LeGassick style. Darryn says everything from five carat diamonds to $49 gold earrings must be worthy of the LeGassick name. “Our clients expect the best and most unusual pieces from around the world, we do our best to satisfy them,” he says. “We also create individual pieces. Our jewellers will draw, design and handcraft the perfect piece for every occasion,” Darryn says. Visit LeGassick at Logan Hyperdome, Runaway Bay Shopping Village, or Robina Town Centre and see highly skilled craftspeople at work. All three stores have in-house workshops and on site jewellery designers. All brands of watches can be serviced and repaired on-site by qualified watchmakers. Most jewellery repairs are completed on the day they are delivered. Diamond buyers can discuss their needs with qualified diamond graders. Service and style is the LeGassick key to success.

Spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner. Now is the time to get ready for the beach. Summer fashions and swimwear show all and one of the most unsightly sights is body hair. Men and women can benefit from superior hair removal at Australian Skin Clinics. Australian Skin Clinics uses the latest high quality technology to painlessly remove unwanted hair from the face and body. Australian Skin Clinic owner Deb FarnworthWood says not all hair removal procedures are the same. “Clinics and salons can spend from $15 thousand to well over a $100 thousand on IPL equipment and even more on laser,” she says. “The difference in the cost is due to the power and efficacy of the machine. Not all skins are suitable for IPL and darker skins need laser so it is essential to offer both options. “Generally, manufacturers only sell high-grade equipment to medical practices. Australian Skin Clinics is a medical practice. We have a Cutera laser and the Linton IPL. Highly trained practitioners use this high-tech equipment to give the best results in the shortest time. “Most people are delighted with the results after only six treatments. Less effective equipment takes 10 or even 12 treatments to give the same result. All hair removal is uncomfortable, there is no point in going through unnecessary procedures. “Six of the best treatments gives excellent results. No laser or IPL hair removal system can claim to give 100 per cent permanent hair removal but Australian Skin Clinic’s specialist equipment goes close. “Maintenance treatments may be required a couple of times a year as some hair usually returns. Generally this new growth is fine, soft and easily removed,” Deb says Australian Skin Clinics offer simple treatments and dramatic changes for men and women. Star gazing with Angel face Naomi Watts
Thierry Mugler created Angel fragr fragrance from a childhood m memory and the dream o of a star. It created a g great impact in the world of p perfumery. The world’s most beautiful models embod embodied the Angel image. After 17 successful years, Angel’s n new incarnation has even gre greater star power. The late latest Angel face is Naomi Watts, an Academy Award nominated actres actress with an impressive list of screen credits. She made her debut in Mulholland Drive and has since worked with a number of leading directors. Films include 21 Grams, King Kong, Eastern Promises, Funny Games, and the recently released The International. Naomi was an inspired choice for Thierry Mugler. Her personality projects sensuality, voluptuousness, effervescence and fragility. It’s the essence of Angel. The new Angel advertising campaign was appropriately filmed in Los Angeles, the city of angels. It was directed by Bill Condon (Dream Girls) and photographed by Ali Mahdavi. Since the 1992 Australian launch, Angel has been listed in this country’s top five women’s fragrances. Mugler says Angel is a sensual scent for women who are half-angel, half-devil. “It evokes the tenderness of childhood with mature femininity,” he says. “Angel embodies the paradox of the Mugler woman, she is pure and sensual, tender and conquering,” he says. The star symbol is reminiscent of Mugler’s childhood. He says the fascination with stars began when he slept outdoors. “The stars fascinated me, I looked for shooting stars all night long,” he says. The star shaped Angel bottle is produced by a revolutionary rotation process. Each bottle is hand-polished with the finishing techniques used on fine crystal. The bottle is capped with a chrome star replica.
“Naomi is an angel, a glamorous beauty, fragile and powerful. A fantastic actress, and a vamp princess who expresses sincerity, tenderness and passion,” says Thierry Mugler. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Man to man Respected plastic surgeon Dr Craig Layt discusses cosmetic treatments for men.
Men can now improve nature’s handiwork and turn back time through surgical and non-surgical procedures. Women have turned to medical experts for help for generations but until recently, men have coped alone. Dr Layt explains the options available to men.
Q A
Q A
Do you believe men are willing to undergo cosmetic treatments? During my years in practice, I have treated a large number of male patients. Most men see a plastic surgeon for treatment to repair damage caused by accidents. We can make a broken nose look attractive, realign a broken jaw, and deal with numerous other repair jobs but modern techniques mean we can now do more. Men do not have to grow old disgracefully while women continue to look young and beautiful.
What are the procedures most sought after by men? Procedures can correct all sorts of problems on the face and body. Some men are self-conscious about prominent ears, a large nose or a receding chin, these can all be treated. Other procedures help restore a youthful, virile appearance. As years go by, skin becomes saggy and muscles stretch. This makes the brow sag and wrinkle; eyebrows droop and the jaw loses firmness. Non-surgical and surgical procedures can restore firmness and make skin appear younger and fresher. A brow lift can remedy a fleshy or lined brow and get rid of a severe or aggressive look. Eye bag removal on the upper eyelid or under the eye can take years off a man’s face.
Q A
Q A
Many men find middle age leads to man boobs and a jelly belly, can surgery help? A range of procedures help body image. Even the most stringent diet and exercise regime sometimes fails to deliver the desired body shape. Liposuction can be used to remove localised areas of excess fat. Surgery can give the chest a more manly look.
What are the benefits of cosmetic procedures? A new look leads to increased self confidence and self esteem. Cosmetic procedures should be considered carefully. There are some possible risks, as with all procedures but we discuss this at the first consultation. Most men are concerned about achieving natural looking results, protecting their privacy, and allowing for any down time. I work with a dedicated team to ensure the best possible outcome and the shortest recovery time. Privacy is guaranteed.

Young restaurateurs push the boundaries Kylie Hayden and Shonel Simpson own and operate a trio of dining establishments. Perlé in Surfers, Bellakai in Coolangatta and Mist at Kirra have the Gold Coast covered.
Running a successful restaurant is hard work but entrepreneurs Kylie Hayden and Shonel Simpson have managed to create three top establishments in a short time.
Monday Mexican sessions with $2 tacos, $6 nachos, $10 pizzas and drink specials attract quite a crowd. Call in on Cuban Tuesday for $6 tapas and cocktail specials.
Perlé in Circle on Cavill is celebrating a year of success this month. Shonel says the restaurant pushes the boundaries. “We recently won the Restaurant and Caterers Best New Restaurant Award,” she says.
On Wednesday night diners can enjoy twofor-one cocktails and $10 pizzas. Thirsty Thursday offers include $5 drink specials and $6 tapas. Drink and dine while DJ Credential spins the decks.
“Perlé’s charity lunches have been a big hit. We have raised quite a lot of money for Careflight and the Cancer Council. These lunches have also helped support Griffith University scholarship programs.
Dine at Perlé on Friday and Saturday night and make it super special by booking a private booth. The booths are great for romantic evenings or private dinner parties.
“Majestic water features and private rooms are part of the outstanding features. Private bar rooms include Perrier-Jouet and Patron Tequila. The restaurant rooms are named Verve and Craggy after the wine ranges.
Bellakai is situated on Coolangatta Beach. Shonel says it’s very popular with local people and visitors. “Bellakai won the Best Breakfast Award.
“The private rooms are out of this world. We offer Mist dining packages with return transport so guests don’t have to drive or pay for a cab.” she says.
Perlé’s special $12 lunches are very popular with local business people. Weeknight specials are a big attraction for local people.
“Bookings are now essential for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The place is buzzing, particularly on weekends,” she says. Mist is the latest addition to Kylie and Shonel’s portfolio. Shonel says it has to be seen and experienced. “Mist is on the beach at Kirra under the new Neicon Nirvana development. It will be open early November.

LABEL Julie and Julia is based on the true stories of two women. It begins with Julie Powell’s 2005 award-winning novel Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen and links with the life of ‘60s celebrity chef Julia Childs. Julie Powell’s Julie and Julia started out as a blog and became a book about her attempt to cook each recipe in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
See Julie and Julia at the movies from October 8. Julia Child’s 800-page book was a ground breaking work when it was published in 1961. It led to Child’s monumental career as a television chef; she cooked on air from 1962 and received numerous awards for her efforts. The movie Julie & Julia is about these two women. They live in different eras but they each discover passion, fearlessness, and a well-equipped kitchen creates endless possibilities. Writer-director Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail) artfully interweaves the stories. Share the tears and the laughter as Julie and Julia overcome obstacles and mishaps in the kitchen and in life. Julia Child (Meryl Streep) is a kitchen goddess and the foodies’ darling. Julie Powell (Amy Adams) is a soon-to-be 30 year old who wants to turn up the heat on her life. Julia Child was born in 1912 and died in 2004. This uptown girl is best known for her cookery books and her towering stature but there’s a bit more to her than that. After graduating from an elite school and college she moved from her native Massachusetts to New York. She worked in the advertising department of a prestigious home furnishings, a pretty big deal for a very tall rich girl in 1930.
In 1941, when the USA was thinking about getting involved in World War II, Julia moved to Washington and volunteered as a research assistant for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA. She was assigned to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and played a key role in communicating secret documents. In 1945, she was sent to China, and met fellow OSS employee Paul Child. After World War II, the couple returned to America and married. In 1948, they moved to Paris where Paul worked for America’s Information Service. Julia wanted to be more than a traditional wife. She pursued a passion for French cuisine by studying at the then all-male Cordon Bleu cooking school. After graduating, she joined fellow Cordon Bleu students to form the L’Ecole de Trois Gourmandes (the School of Three Chefs).
Julie Powell was born in Texas in ’73. She graduated from college in 1995 with a double major in theatre and creative writing. She began Julie and Julia as a blog while working for the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. The blog quickly gained a large following, and became a book. The paperback edition was retitled Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously. Her second book, Cleaving: a Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession is due for publication in December. Powell’s post movie blog details the trials and tribulations of life in this spotlight. She says it’s been a fun ride. “I’m going to miss those priority tags on my luggage, but it’s probably best for me to go back to Queens and be normal again for awhile. Well, not normal, but you know what I mean. I’ve seen the movie six times now, and the cringing hasn’t stopped,” she says.

Word, words, words We use words to communicate but mispronunciation leads to misunderstanding The June edition of Label opened up a can of words with the advised pronunciation of Moët (as in Moët & Chandon). The most common pronunciation has for years been the dreaded Mow-eeeeeee.
The latest irritant to hit the air waves comes from sports reporters who have no comprehension of the word versus. It means against. The Titans do not verse another team, they play against them. If they were to verse them they may write a poem or sing a song.
A high percentage of adults studied French at school. Although most of the lessons are forgettable, the silent letter t on the end of words stayed in the memory. That’s fine but Moët is not a French name, it’s Austrian. The Moët (mow-ett) family married the French Chandon (shondon) family and added their name to the famous champagne.
The Australian media is bad enough but American news reports and programs make language a joke. Apart from the inability to pronounce the letter t (literally becomes liderally), Americans seems unable to pronounce anything with more than one syllable.
Mispronunciation of foreign words is understandable but language is rapidly being destroyed by the incorrect use of common words. The media is (as always) partly to blame.
Sometimes a single syllable defeats our colonial cousins. The word ho (hoe) recently fell into disrepute. Ho is generally a greeting (used in triplicate at Christmas) and a gardening tool (hoe). It is not a whore. This word is pronounced hore or hoar (the latter can also be used to describe a frost).
Controversy is not contra – versey. Ceremony is not cera moaney. Privacy is not privacy Bath is not barth and pasta is not parsta. Most of our language is based on Latin and there are no long vowels in Latin.

Numerous words are frequently mispronounced. Save the language, invest in a dictionary and read the part in italics (that’s it-alics, not eye-talics) to get an idea of the right sound.

Ironbark sets a benchmark The ability to create a story is a rare gift and Australian author Johanna Nicholls has it. Johanna Nicholls spent almost seven years creating her debut novel Ironbark but her visualisation of the story started in childhood. Melbourne-born Johanna was aware of a family secret. She knew her great grandmother had an illegitimate child to a man she was forbidden to marry. Johanna says her great grandmother refused to give up her daughter. “The child was given to her mother to bring up,” Johanna says. “My great grandmother later married and had other children but the heritage of her first born was never discussed. I later found out her first child’s father was a Romani. This was the reason they weren’t allowed to marry. “I discovered my great grandmother’s lover was a royal Romani and a talented violinist. He fathered the child when he was 19 years of age, just two years before he died of TB,” Johanna says. Johanna took up the challenge of producing her first novel after a career in journalism and television. She was a magazine feature writer and fashion editor in London, worked with the Seven Network in Australia and was television drama script editor for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Her research skills are impeccable and accurate to the smallest detail. She used her enviable talent and the skills developed during her career to create the huge and enthralling Ironbark. Johanna says a career in journalism taught her never to give up and the importance of deadlines. “I knew I wanted to explore history and chose a seven year segment from 1837 to 1844. A fascination with the Romani culture and Australian history formed the basis of my idea. I held my nose and jumped in,” she says. Now working as a full time novelist from a lovely 1830s convict-built Sydney cottage, Johanna follows her heart and her passion for relatively recent history.
“I am a morning person and at my computer from first light, as a child I was dyslexic, this taught me to visualise rather then verbalise. I see the story before I write it,” she says. “I created my characters but some had to take a secondary role as the main characters took shape and assumed a life of their own. Creating the characters is a bit like being a parent. You know how you want the child to develop, the best education, career and relationship possibilities. But children grow up and make their own decisions. It’s the same with my characters. “My motivation for Ironbark included the exploration of issues. History allowed me to examine how changes in status, marriage, divorce, and other social situations impact on people and society,” she says. In the Ironbark era of 1837 to 1844 de facto marriages were commonplace. Divorce was a rare option and limited to the wealthy. Bigamy was a desperate measure. It meant establishing a former spouse was presumed dead after at least seven years absence. The age of sexual consent was 12 years. Child prostitutes were common in Sydney Town. It wasn’t until the Federation era that feminists like Rose Scott lobbied to change the legal age of consent to 16. The death penalty for rape was abolished in England in 1841 but retained in New South Wales. Men were seldom found guilty of rape; single females were often blamed for inciting seduction. Female convicts and destitute women where incarcerated at the Female Factory Parramatta, a correctional institution designed by Francis Greenway.
British law was a reality for wealthy landowners (know as the Quality) but many convicts lived under the threat of the lash or escaped to live by the bushrangers’ code. Ironbark is set against a harsh physical and sociological climate. The name relates to the hard bark of certain species of Australian eucalyptus trees. The bark can survive flood, drought and bushfires. Australia is founded on characters as hard as ironbark. They overcame incredible hardships to build Australia as it is today. Ironbark follows the intertwined destinies of a Romani gypsy, a Currency Lad and a young convict. They walk a tightrope between law, order, and anarchy in 1830s New South Wales. The story is destined to become a landmark novel in the tradition of Gone with the Wind. Johanna Nicholls has a rare gift for storytelling. Her characters are real; they live, breath, and feel. Meet them in this brilliant book and travel on a journey of romance, excitement and tragedy. This big book is a page turner, take it on holiday and buy it for Christmas gifts. Finish it in time for Johanna’s next book; she’s working on it now. www.labelmagazine.com.au -
