S

he is recognised as one of the most beautiful women on the planet, and an actor with some serious talent, but for Oscar winner Charlize Theron, the victories were hard won. Born in Benoni, South Africa, on August 7, 1975, Charlize was born into an unhappy household. Her parents, Charles and Gerda, were coowners of a road construction company and lived on a working farm outside of Johannesburg. Her father Charles was reported to have been a violent alcoholic and life was never easy. However, Charlize’s passion for animals and dance provided a happy distraction. A talented dancer, Charlize was sent to boarding school on a dance scholarship when she was 12. In 1991, when Theron was just 15, her father, in a drunken violent rage, alledgedly attacked Charlize and her mother, and as Charlize watched in horror, her mother fatally shot her father. The act was deemed self-defence and no charges were ever laid. In the aftermath of the horrific incident, Charlize created the story that her father had been killed in a car accident, a story that held for many years. The incident, as well as the broader unrest in her home of South Africa, gave her a unique perspective. “I don’t know if I would be who I am today if I’d grown up in a different country,” she said. “In our house the news was always on, the newspaper was always on the dining room table and my parents had a real thirst for politics, and that’s how I grew up. A lot of my American friends grew up in a different way, and because of what’s happened in America in recent years, they are asking questions, playing catch-up. But I can understand that, because they were living in a country that was comfy and cozy. I wasn’t. I want to know what is going on. I have an interest in world politics--how can you not when you live on this Earth? I’m just flabbergasted when people don’t give a shit.” By 16, the stunning Charlize had won several modelling competitions. Travelling to New York at the age of 18, she decided to leave modelling to pursue her first love – dance. Although she studied and performed with some high profile dance schools in New York, she suffered several debilitating injuries that put an end to her dance career, but opened her up to the world of acting. Charlize’s journey to the big screen is a story worthy of a script itself. After moving to Los Angeles, Charlize soon found that despite her movie star looks, her South African accent was holding her back. So she plonked herself in front of the TV and spent weeks perfecting her American accent. “Looks alone won’t get you that far,” she said. “It may get you in the door, but there’s always somebody younger, somebody prettier. You

have to rely on something else.” Her big break came in the most unlikely of ways. It was 1994, when a broke and desperate Charlize argued with a bank teller, who refused to allow her to withdraw funds from a South African account. Legend has it that her tantrum in the bank was quite a performance; such a good one in fact that it earned the attention of fellow customer John Crosby, a Hollywood manager who represented talent including John Hurt and Rene Russo. He immediately offered to sign Charlize and, within months, she made her acting debut in a small role in Children of the Corn III, followed by 2 Days in the Valley, and That Thing You Do!. Her good looks and obvious talent soon saw her cast alongside Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves in The Devil’s Advocate. After that, her star continued to rise with parts in Woody Allen’s Celebrity, Mighty Joe Young, The Astronaut’s Wife, The Cider House Rules, and Sweet November. By 2003, she was a fully-fledged rising star, and starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in the heist thriller The Italian Job, but it was her performance later that year in Monster—a biopic about serial killer Aileen Wuornos—that earned her widespread respect. She gained almost 20 kilos for the role, and her chilling and gritty performance won her both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Since then, her choice of roles has been eclectic; always focusing on the quality of the work. She starred as Britt Ekland in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, and in North Country as an iron miner fighting sexual harassment in the work place (a role which earned her nominations at the Golden Globes and the Oscars). She also became an action star with roles in Aeon Flux, Hancock, Prometheus, Mad Max: Fury Road and the Fast and Furious franchise. Her action status continues in her latest role in Atomic Blonde which sees her playing an undercover MI6 agent sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents. Her decade long relationship with actor Stuart Townsend ended in 2010, and she has since had a brief relationship with Sean Penn, but her focus has been firmly focused on her children Jackson and August, both of whom were adopted. Her life is simple, and relatively ‘normal’ and that’s just the way she likes it. “I live a very simple life,” she said. “I don’t have to make those giant movies. I don’t have a yacht or a private plane. As long as I can maintain this life, which is pretty low-maintenance and simple, then all of a sudden you don’t have to worry about all that stuff. I don’t have to take a job to pay a mortgage on a house I can’t afford.”

As you get older, you get wrinkles and your boobs sag. But you get wisdom, too. So it’s not all bad!

RUNWAY Alice McCall

Scintillating Sydney

From the Opera House to Icebergs, MercedesBenz Fashion Week Australia saw Sydney selling itself to big name international buyers as a result of last year’s repositioning to make it the first event focused exclusively on Resort collections in the worldwide buying window. More than 56 designers showcased their collections across the iconic destinations and Carriageworks home base. Alice McCall made crowds froth over feathers and fine filigree details, while Steven Khalil brought out the midnight blooms and ZHIVAGO exhibited foxy florals. Sass & Bide made a return to the stage after 14 years with bedazzled bodices and typical tribal vibes. KitX, Mariam Seddiq and the NextGen ensured our dark fashion fantasies were fulfilled, as Hansel & Gretel, Ginger & Smart and C/MEO COLLECTIVE lightened the mood with a hint of pink. Karla Spetic and Anna Quan reinforced relaxed tailoring to make us rethink our Wednesday wardrobe.

Behind the Brand: The Nuances of Nimble A move to the epicentre of health and wellness, Bondi Beach, saw longtime friends Katia and Vera create Nimble Activewear. The founders discuss the finer details of fit fashion from patterns to purchase.

What are the biggest faults you noticed in activewear on the streets? At the time that we were launching Nimble Activewear, we found that the choices on the market fell between expensive highend names, budget options that lacked the functionality of workout clothing and high tech brands missing a feminine aesthetic. There was a real gap in the market for activewear that was equal parts technical and beautiful – activewear was not really providing value for the women who were wearing it. It was from this realisation that the idea for Nimble Activewear grew as we set out to create the pieces that we, as consumers, were looking for. How does Nimble Activewear differ to other brands on the market? Each Nimble Activewear collection is bounded by our central philosophy that truly functional activewear should never come at the expense of style. We dedicate an incredible amount of time and resources into the fabrics that we use as well as the design of our signature prints. In terms of our fabrics, we work closely with one of the best technical fabric mills in the world to custom develop the fabrics used in our range – this ensures that there is consistency across our collections and also that each Nimble Activewear garment lasts the distance and does exactly what our customers demand from their workout clothes. From sketch to sale, what process does a Nimble Activewear garment go through? It all starts with the fabrics we use. We put a lot of development into our performance fabrics, which are specifically developed for us and our end use. After the sketching stage, we sit with our pattern maker who brings it all to life and patterns are sent to our local or off-shore manufacturers, where we then complete a sample run for all new styles. Once we are happy with how samples are fitting, our team & trainers in the community that we work with will give them a test run to make sure they are performing to our standards. Creating technical and functional activewear is really important to us so we ensure that all our styles meet this requirement. Vera and Katia, you’ve both had such diverse careers. What skills did you implement from your previous positions to create Nimble Activewear? We both bring very different skill sets and ways of thinking of the business. We find that our skills are really complementary and allow us to tackle different aspects of the business. We are also constantly learning from each other and building on our own skill sets. We also think differently and challenge each other to approach 22 LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2017

tasks and problems from a different perspective – we are constantly learning from each other and building on our own skill sets. In the current economic climate, what reassured you that starting a retail business would be successful? Regardless of the economic climate, I don’t think that there is any guarantee that a business, be it retail or otherwise, will be successful. Ultimately, we both saw a gap in the market and had the same vision as well as passion for the brand and just went with it. To have a successful retail business in the current climate you need to be resilient, work hard and also constantly push the envelope and innovate your products as well as how you engage with your community – all things that we constantly try to make sure that we are doing. What advice would you give to young women considering their start-up? Believe in yourself and go for it! It is also critical to not be too focused on one path and not to develop tunnel vision. Often new opportunities can arise and you must be prepared to be flexible and change your path (or a part of it) if that is the right thing to do. It is also a great idea to surround yourself with like-minded people or businesses. With social media, it is much easier to seek these people out and you will find that more often than not, they are more than happy to share their knowledge and be a part of your journey too. Not only will this provide a great source of inspiration but the support and advice along the way will be invaluable and will also help to keep you accountable to those big goals! How do you hope to expand Nimble Activewear? To keep growing our range, investing in innovative technologies and continue to empower women to get active and healthy. We have some exciting developments in the pipeline both domestically and offshore so stay tuned! What trends are showcased in your latest collection? Our latest collection is all about creating the yin and yang effect of an edgy yet feminine aesthetic. Hardened romantic elements with edgy florals and delicate soft hues of grey. How do you like to break a sweat in your Nimble Activewear? VERA: Nothing better than an early morning coastal run along the Bondi to Bronte track. KATIA: A strong vinyasa flow class. Visit www.nimbleactivewear.com for your fit fashion fit.

They also smell amazing.

LEMON

Essential oils have been used for centuries for their medicinal, spiritual, and uplifting properties. Our ancestors understood that mother nature provided us with everything we need to prosper including an extensive range of powerful plant extracts, each with their own unique organic chemistry, scent and healing properties.

Lemon essential oil has multiple health benefits and a fresh, clean citrus aroma that can uplift your mind and body. Use this oil daily to cleanse your body and physical environment of any undesirables.

Each essential oil contains compounds with unique healing and therapeutic benefits. Here are five essential oils and creative ways to use them. FRANKINCENSE Frankincense is well known for its extensive health benefits, including its impressive anti-inflammatory properties. Known as the king of essential oils, it is a great all rounder as it supports and soothes the mind, body and soul. • Add Frankincense to your moisturiser to reduce the appearance of blemishes and to rejuvenate your skin. • Feeling low? Rub a few drops of frankincense oil to the bottom of your feet to support you to transmute any feelings of unworthiness or self-doubt. • Mix two to three drops of frankincense into a carrier oil and massage directly into sore joints. • Take one or two drops internally to promote healthy cellular function.(Only digest 100 percent pure organic therapeutic grade essential oils.) • Integrate frankincense oil into your daily yoga and meditation to deepen your practice. LABEL LOVES LÜK BEAUTIFOOD Founder Cindy Luken explains her beauty food philosophy

W

hat sets lük beautifood apart from a regular lipstick label? What sets us apart is our foundation and lük philosophy which courses through everything we create. With our foundation being built on harnessing the beauty of food, we give every woman the opportunity to cultivate her natural beauty without compromising her health and wellbeing. Our philosophy of highlighting and not hiding natural beauty supports our look being all about a healthy naked glow and beautiful subtle illumination. What are your active ingredients? Our active ingredients are food actives! Our products are made with a potent mix of active foods that literally ‘feed’ the skin with nutrients, hydration and protective antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. The cold-pressed avocado oil, sesame seed oil and cocoa butter are rich in omega 3+ 6 essential fatty acids to boost the lip’s natural process of moisture regulation to help soothe, soften and restore suppleness. Lecithin is a natural emulsifier with water-binding properties, honeycomb (beeswax) and plant waxes lock in moisture and provide that rich, silky smooth feel. Vitamins A, C and E and naturally occurring antioxidants sesamin and sesamolin act as a powerful antioxidants to fight free radicals and help maintain collagen and elastin fibres that give skin its smooth, firm and line-free appearance. In the wider conversation, it’s also as much about what we ‘don’t use’ and ‘don’t do’ that supports our natural beauty community in exploring and adopting natural beauty practices and products - and promoting ingredients straight from the kitchen and garden! We don’t use any toxic ingredients that are known endocrine disruptors, carcinogenic or linked to cancer including preservatives, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic colours and fragrance. We also don’t use any synthetic ingredients. We also make every effort to leave the smallest environmental footprint possible and we don’t test on animals and are proudly made in Australia following the guidelines for COLIPA & TQM systems. How does lük beautifood fit in with a holistic approach to beauty? lük sits at the heart of a holistic approach to beauty by drawing on harnessing the beauty of food to promote natural beauty from the inside out and outside in! Our bodies are put to the test every waking moment, and also in our sleep at times, just with the stresses of modern living. If we’re using synthetic beauty preparations, eating highly refined foods or over exposing ourselves to environmental, physical or emotional stresses, we now know to expect a buildup of toxins over time and a lack of nutrients supplied to our skin, hair and nails as our bodies see them as non essential bits in the health and wellbeing hierarchy of needs! In the holistic approach to beauty, stress also needs to addressed as

28 LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2017

our body’s response mechanism to stress is to create hormones – adrenalin or cortisol that since the dark ages pops our body into a state of fight or flight. Clear glowing skin and shiny hair is clearly not essential for survival when our body thinks we’re avoiding attack or are in a state of famine! Over time, this response mechanism being ‘always on’ leads to detrimental effects on our bodies including premature aging, altered mood and lower self worth. And so, how lük fits in with a holistic approach to beauty is to simply support our community in their own holistic approach to beauty. We share an abundance of free natural beauty information, recipes for harnessing the beauty in food, DIY beauty recipes and inspirational conversations with our Natural Beauty community sharing tips and insights we all benefit from. Who have you been most excited to see wearing lük beautifood and who would you like to see trying your products? To be honest, it’s women, and men, who are battling a health issue, illness or intolerance who use lük beautifood to hydrate their skin and lips during and post treatment that is most satisfying for me. To be useful in the prevention, treatment and recovery of health and wellbeing issues as well as a source of really valuable information is humbling. We don’t pay for any endorsements, so to have natural beauties who deeply align with our philosophy, such as Jessica Sepel and Kourtney Kardashian publish Lip Nourish as a favourite natural beauty product is so encouraging. The Science of Sweat Get to know your B.O. with the founders of natural anti-odourant NO PONG Chris and Melanie What made you reconsider regular deodorant? As people who live a healthy, active lifestyle, we’re not always perfect about choosing the “right” option, but when it comes to a product that is used daily, we wanted to know exactly what we were putting on our skin. Most people wear deodorant, so that they don’t smell of B.O. Over the years, we just persevered with regular deodorant, and just lived with the fact that they are only kind of effective at combating body odour. When we discovered a formula that was all natural, and even more effective it was a no-brainer really! How did your product development journey begin? Well, Melanie has a long history of making her own cosmetics – moisturisers, lip balms, sunscreen and zinc – and she had been making a fairly crude early version of No Pong for herself. We were on a surfing trip in the tropics and using this deodorant and Chris literally wore the same shirt for 3 days and didn’t smell at all. It was pretty much at that point we knew we were onto something and No Pong was born. Then came all the fun of complying with regulatory requirements, improving that original formula and being quite ruthlessly honest about our expectations of the product ourselves. It’s quite a different product today, as it was on that tropical surf trip! How does NO PONG differ to other deodorants in the supermarket? No Pong is quite different to other supermarket deodorants. Firstly, it’s a cream that you apply with your fingers, much like a sunscreen or moisturiser Secondly, it’s not water based so it won’t simply wash off when you sweat. No Pong is designed to create a water resistant environment that smelly armpit bacteria can’t stand, which is part of the key to its effectiveness. Finally, it’s not available in supermarkets! We’ve designed our entire business around being an efficient, direct to customer operation, which enables us to pass on those savings to our amazing customers. Supermarket chains typically expect deep discounts from their suppliers, and these would make many great products unviable to sell at the costs we sell at. We believe great, natural products should be affordable and not come with a “natural tax”, and we aim to always keep No Pong priced that way! What harmful ingredients do regular deodorants contain and what are they capable of doing to our bodies? There 30 LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2017

is a lot of hype around some of the ingredients in regular deodorants. This might sound counter-intuitive coming from a natural deodorant company, but we’re science people as well and the truth is, the jury is still out on many of the effects they can have on our bodies. There are a few key ingredients that are known to have an effect on the human body: Aluminium is known to have potential to cause mutation to genetic code. It has been contentiously linked to Alzheimer’s disease also Parabens are known to mimic hormone functions, particularly oestrogen, and its well-known effects on breast cancer. Triclosan is a common anti-bacterial found in traditional deodorants, and actually banned for use in soaps by the US Food and Drug Administration, but not in Australia. However, it’s really important for people to understand that the scientific jury is out on the realworld, long-term effect of many of these as used in deodorants. That said, why use these ingredients at all if you don’t have to! As a fashion mag, we despise yellow underarm stains on our white garments. What can we do to avoid this? Yellow stains from regular antiperspirants are annoying. Anti-perspirants contain ingredients designed to block pores, so, when mixed with your sweat, it transfers to clothing and is likely to leave residual marks and stains. When applying a deodorant, although it doesn’t contain pore blocking ingredients, we would still recommend waiting a few minutes for it to absorb or dry before putting on close fitting clothing. This will help minimise any transfer onto clothing. NO PONG keeps costs low by adopting no frills packaging. Why was this an important decision when creating the brand? Our packaging is straightforward, simple and importantly for us personally does not contain any plastic, and it fully recyclable. As an online focused business, keeping costs low is important to us, so we can pass those savings on to our awesome customer! What other lifestyle habits can our readers explore when opting for a more natural way of living? Hydration is pretty much the key to living a healthy life. Up to 60% of our bodies are made up of water. This means that our organs and systems depend on that water. So, if you want to start with healthy habits, start with hydration. It will help everything else work more efficiently and will give you more energy to choose other healthy habits. Name one celebrity you would like to introduce to NO PONG and why? Steph Gilmore! She is such an inspiring Australian, both in and out of the water. She is a six time World Surfing Champion and has so much grace on and off the surfboard. It really takes something special to be at the top of your game for so long, and she is such a great ambassador, not only for surfing, but for all women in sport. TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR SUGAR INTAKE

Say sayonara to sugar

• Cut down slowly on the amount you have in tea or coffee until you take it sugar free.

SUGAR has been getting bad press lately and, apparently, for good reason.

• Use a natural, not an artificial, sugar substitute like stevia.

In large amounts, sugar is known to trigger weight gain, destroy the health of our teeth and gums, cause energy slumps, raise the risk of heart disease, affect our immune system and indirectly lead to diabetes. It can also cause premature ageing because it causes a reaction in the body that triggers the production of molecules that can damage skin and organs.

• Get your sugar fix through fresh fruit (not dried, that is sugar-laden). • Go for a walk when you feel tired or irritable, rather than reaching for a sugary snack.

The O in smooth Produced by Australian company ASM Liquor, VODKA O is a silky smooth quality vodka free from impurities. Guilt free coffee Recent studies have shown that compared to non-coffee drinkers, coffee drinkers are less likely to have Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia. And it’s said that a coffee before your workout can help you burn more fat. Coffee drinkers may even have a lower risk of strokes.

MENU EVOLUTION AT MOO MOO

popularity, the dish soaks a whole chicken and vegetables in a delicious blend of apple cider, chilli and ginger.

MOO MOO The Wine Bar + Grill restaurant group is bringing greater texture to its renowned steak-led offering with the launch of its new restaurant menu.

With fresh seafood delivered daily, new lighter options include the Yellowtail Kingfish Sashimi accompanied by samphire, okra, chickpea miso and sake vinaigrette as a cold entrée.

Hailing the changes as evolutionary rather than revolutionary, owner Steven Adams collaborated with group executive chef Trent Robson to bring more balance to the offering by tapping foodie trends, embracing seasonal changes and meeting client tastes.

Bringing even more variety to the hot entrée selections is the Hervey Bay Half Shell Scallops with dukkah mayonnaise, coleslaw and sausage pork cheek or butifarra.

Moo Moo regulars will notice that the specialty steak selection remains untouched – the result of its refinement just a few months ago. “We are extremely happy with the performance of the beef dishes – the consistency is there so there was no need for change,” Steven said. He is also thrilled to note that supplier, Jack’s Creek – a Wagyu and Black Angus specialists based in Gunnedah – was recently named the world’s best beef producer in the World Steak Challenge for the second consecutive year. “It demonstrates that we actively choose the best beef product that is available for our customers,” Steven said.

“It is something quite different for us, but with the hot pot on trend we felt it was a fantastic way to enhance our shared mains offering, which continues to work extremely well for us,” Steven said.

An addition to the mains menu is the Crispy Wagyu Brisket Salad, proving a classic alternative for the light eater, while working in the house specialty. The result is a heady blend of contrasting textures and flavours. “Winter or summer, it’s always good to have a salad available and this dish combines the richness of the beef with a crisp salad and riesling vinaigrette,” Steven said. A tantalising fusion of flash-fried beef brisket, bean sprouts, radish onion and bittersweet riesling vinaigrette, the dish joins fellow newcomers such as the Moo Moo Valencia Pork Belly, broadening the mains line-up.

However, keen that Moo Moo is not labeled as purely a steak restaurant, Steven and Trent have put great effort into creating extraordinary non-beef options as well as lighter dishes with female clients in mind for this new menu.

Moo Moo has also expanded its array of dining experiences with a two-course business lunch menu including a glass of wine for $45. Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill is located at Broadbeach on the Park, Gold Coast and in The Port Office Building, Stamford Plaza in Brisbane.

Steven is particularly excited about the Moo Moo Spicy Chicken Hot Pot, a fresh arrival on the venue’s increasingly popular list of shared mains.

Moo Moo has hosted an array of celebrities including Amber Heard, Elon Musk, Sophie Monk, Jason Momoa and Tom Hiddleston proving Moo Moo really is the place to be seen.

KATE BENNETT GOES GAGA FOR MOO MOO

I had two entrées - the prawn and calamari, both were amazing.

“My husband Simon and I dined at Moo Moo on a Thursday night. It was after the Moo Moo ladies lunch so I expected the place to be flooded with the ladies still lingering after lunch but there was a really nice mixed crowd at the bar.

For his main, Simon had flat iron which was beautifully marbled, cooked medium rare and so tender. As recommended by Troy, Simon had the Moo Moo Ju, and it was perfect.

After a wait at reception, our fantastic night began. To kick-start the evening I enjoyed a glass (or three) of Verve and Simon had Peroni Legera. Our waiter Troy was beyond expectations - not only does he know the food, he’s also a great bloke, and even bought three cuts of meat to the table for us to pick. 38 LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2017

Tin Shed Shiraz was the perfect complement to the steak. We shared three delicious sides of iceberg lettuce, broccolini and mash. We ended the evening with the divine chocolate log with honeycomb. It was an absolutely fabulous evening – the service was amazing, there was a great atmosphere and the food, as always, was incredible. Five stars!”

RECIPES

LOW-CARB BANGERS & MASH • 1 medium cauliflower, florets only (about 600g) • 1 x 400g tin of butter beans, drained and rinsed • 12 sausages • 25g parmesan, grated • 40g cheddar, grated • salt and pepper To serve: • sage and onion gravy • small bunch of parsley, finely chopped • steamed greens METHOD Preheat your grill to maximum. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and then chuck in the cauliflower florets and the drained butter beans. Simmer for 15 minutes, or until soft. Drain the cauliflower and beans thoroughly and return to the warm pan. While the cauliflower and beans are simmering away, slide the sausages under the grill and cook them for about 12 minutes, turning a couple of times until they are cooked through. While the cauliflower and beans are hot, roughly mash the whole lot together (you won’t end up with a smooth mash; it will still have texture to it). Add both kinds of cheese and stir in to melt. Add a little salt and pepper if you think it needs it. By now your sausages should be cooked, so serve up the cheesy mash with three sausages each and a ladleful of sage and onion gravy. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with a healthy portion of steamed greens on the side.

RECIPES

STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING • 200g pitted dates • 190g butter, roughly cubed • 100g golden caster sugar • 3 eggs • 30g black treacle • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 200g self-raising flour • 120g soft light brown sugar • 200ml double cream • ice cream, to serve – optional METHOD Place the dates into a large bowl, pour over 175ml of boiling water and leave to stand for a minimum of 30 minutes (you might find that if you have very dry dates they benefit from a further 15 minutes). Preheat your oven to 180ºC and line the baking dish with baking parchment. Place the dates and all of the soaking liquid into a food processor. Add 100g of the butter, the golden caster sugar, eggs and treacle. Blitz until pretty much smooth – don’t worry if it looks as if the butter and eggs are splitting; it will all come good. Add the bicarbonate of soda and self-raising flour and blitz until you reach a smooth consistency. Tip the batter into the lined baking dish. Spread the batter out so it is fairly even and then slide into the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Place the remaining 90g of butter into a saucepan with the soft light brown sugar and double cream, and bring slowly to the boil while stirring regularly. Boil the sauce for 1 minute, then remove from the heat. When the cake is fully cooked, remove it from the oven and prick it all over with a fork. Pour over about 4 tablespoons of the sauce and spread it over the top of the cake. Let the cake stand for 5 minutes, then remove from the dish, cut into squares and serve up with the remaining toffee sauce and ice cream, if you really want to push the boat out.

Cooking for Family and Friends is a beautifully photographed collection of Joe’s easy favourites and crowd-pleasers, such as Roast Chicken with Celeriac Mash and Bacon Greens, BBQ Ribs with Dirty Corn, and Tandoori Chicken Thighs with Chapattis. CREATE YOUR OWN ESCAPE Everyone needs a special place where they can relax and renew Most of us feel like there’s simply too much to do in a day, with very little time out for ourselves. If you’re like us, you’re bombarded by emails and mobile phone calls and, if you commute in peak hour or live with family, there’s always people in your personal space. Of course it’s wonderful to have contact with others, especially with those we care about. But for our mental and physical health, we need a regular break from this constant buzz of activity. One of the best ways to get it is to have our own private sanctuary. If you feel a little guilty about the idea of it – you always put other peoples’ needs ahead of your own – consider this. “No-one can love and care for others if they’re sick and tired,” says psychologist Dr Tim Sharp, of the Happiness Institute in Sydney. “We need the wisdom to

care for ourselves. That means having time to pursue our individual interests. “This, in turn, can be made easier if we have a personal space where we can find peace and quiet.” Research shows that having a place you can get away to, even if it’s only a special corner in a room of your house, can actually improve your mental and physical health. Here’s why: the work, relationship or financial pressures we all face every day create stress in our mind and body. We go into a primitive, “fight or flight” mode, as we battle to get all our tasks done at work or home and to cope with everything that is thrown at us. This sets off a series of reactions that involve our sympathetic nervous system. These reactions include our heart and breathing speeding up, our digestion slowing down and our blood sugar increasing. Obviously to maintain good health we need to switch off from this mode and into the opposite one – the rest and repose reactions governed by our parasympathetic nervous system. That means spending some quiet time somewhere we find relaxing, say health experts. The first step, of course, is to find a place, indoors, or outdoors, that you can make your own. By the way, your personal sanctuary is just that: personal. If others want in, encourage them to create their own special place.

MAKE A SPACE YOUR OWN Once you’ve found a space for your sanctuary, why not add • A very comfortable chair with plenty of cushions • Copies of your favourite magazines • Fresh flowers, especially if they are scented • Aromatherapy candles • Cosy, handmade throw rugs • Photographs of loved ones • A framed quote or motto • CD player or speakers with some music from nature • A tea-set, or a lovely wine glass and your favourite wine

LIFESTYLE

The Crystal Craze Stoned Crystals founder Ashley Bellino reveals the benefits of crystals in your living space, beyond their aesthetic glory What was your first encounter with crystals and what captivated you about their properties? Over the past few years I have lent myself to the spiritual side and crystals were a natural progressions from my love of yoga and meditation. Under the direction of somewhat of a spiritual mentor for me, I visited a crystal city looking for crystals to incorporate into an old jewellery label I had back in 2015. I learn to feel crystal energy for the first time and also found that there were very few websites that clearly explained what crystals are, how they work and how we can incorporate them into the modern day lifestyle. Why should we include crystals as a part of a holistic approach to wellbeing? Crystals have been used for their powerful healing properties for thousands of years. At an atomic level, our universe is in a constant state of vibration. Crystals emit high frequency vibrations and are extremely good at holding a stable vibration due to their crystalline lattice structure. We, on the other hand, are a very complex mix of vibrations that can easily be disturbed and become unbalanced, which makes us feel sick and unwell. All kinds of things can affect our vibrations, from external influences such as electromagnetic and geopathic stress, to internal ones such as a constant negative thought pattern or suppressing emotions. If for nothing other than their tactile benefits, rolling these shapes around in our hands releases our minds from the more mundane and automatic reactions we have to almost every object we pick up these days (I.e instantly unlocking your phone when you pick it up). What are the most common misconceptions about crystals? Crystals have for so long been boxed in as ‘hippie’ and the jargon surrounding it has made them difficult to understand and ultimately undervalued by the mainstream. Crystals are starting to make a comeback and are slowly finding their way back to the people. Stoned Crystals homes to facilitate this shift by testing the conventional use of crystals by making them more accessible and more fashionable in the modern world. Even if you don’t subscribe to them in an energy sense, Stoned Crystals is paving the way for people to see the obvious benefits of decorating our spaces with crystals as a natural object, just as we do with office plants and windows. For crystal newbies, where does one start in their mineral journey? Whether you are online or in-store, read the properties that each crystal has. Each of our Stoned Crystals comes with a unique energy

card, which clearly shows the properties of the crystals and even has a little blurb about the crystal on the back. After reading about each crystal, pick one which has a message that resonates with you and your journey and perhaps what you are looking to focus on in the near future. Many people say crystals choose us and you may often feel drawn to a particular crystal, maybe the colour or a glint in the stone will draw you in and make you feel a connection with the natural object. In saying this, if you are still very unsure and want to get your collection going, the Clear Quartz is one of the best first crystals to begin with. It is a master healer and generator, which means it also helps to charge other stones. Another cool fact: clear quartz is one of the only crystals that refract light and bounce rainbows off the walls! How do you take care of crystals? To ensure our crystals are working at their best it is important that we follow a 3 step-process when caring for our crystals. CLEANSE, CHARGE AND ACTIVATE. Cleanse crystals in salt water or pass them through incense to eliminate negative energy. Charge your crystal under the sun or moonlight to re-energise; the Full Moon for an extra kick! Activate your crystal by setting an intention for you stone. Remember; what we think or believe about ourselves and the world becomes our reality. We have also developed an Intention Card Deck that is a 101 for Crystal Care and a beautiful decorative piece to accompany your crystals in the home and workspace. How do you personally use crystals in your daily life? I try to reflect every morning and have a moment of stillness or meditation before starting my day. I use my crystals to concentrate on my intentions for that day and what I choose to manifest into the world around me. By placing them around the home they then act as reminders to keep my thoughts and actions in line with my intentions. Where do you source your crystals? Stoned Crystals are A-grade, born in Brazil and Madagascar and raised in Australia. Our HQ, founders and design teams are Melbourne based and we sell Stoned Crystals into the International marketplace, with stockists throughout Australia, New Zealand, United States, Asia and Europe. Our expert lapidists (stone cutters) have produced thousands of crystals in all sorts of geometric shapes and have it down to a fine art. Each crystal is hand-cut and polished to perfection. Suns in China

Michael Barlow, Peter Wright and Touk Miller on the streets of Shanghai.

In May, the players and supporters of the Gold Coast Suns and Port Adelaide travelled to China to play a historic game at Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai. Both teams travelled with squads of 25. More than 5,000 Australian AFL fans descended on Shanghai ahead of the clash between Port Adelaide Power and the Gold Coast Suns, with the stadium’s 10,000 seats sold out. Sadly for the Suns, they were defeated, however the trip was hailed as a huge success. The game was broadcast live on China’s state media channel CCTV, with a viewership that is estimated to be over 20 million. Images courtesy of Michael Wilson and AFL Photos.

TRAVEL STYLE

Packing it Hollywood A-Listers spend a lot of time travelling, so it makes sense that they are in the know when it comes to luggage. Here are the celebs’ bag choices according to Travel and Leisure Magazine.

LOMS

Olivia Palermo always totes Rimowa luggage, as does Cara Delevingne, Milla Jovovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, Macklemore, Diane Kruger, and Cameron Diaz – all of whom have been seen rolling the distinctive bag.

And it’s not just the women who take their baggage seriously. Eddie Redmayne always has his vintage suitcase on hand, while Alexander Skarsgard is partial to a Mulberry trolley. Channing Tatum and Ben Affleck were both seen rolling through airports with their Tumi pieces, while Josh Duhamel loves his all-black LOMS rolling bag. Source: www.travelandleisure.com

Rimowa

Gigi Hadid and Jessica Alba, on the other hand, have both been spotted with the LOMS cream-colored carryon.

FLY FASHION With its recent financial woes seemingly behind it, Italy’s Air Alitalia has unveiled its new look for cabin and ground crew in Rome, designed by Italian haute couturier Ettore Bilotta, and the look is as fabulously chic as you would imagine. Featuring leather gloves, silk scarfs and Tuscan fabrics, the new uniforms were inspired by the “glamorous golden days of Italian fashion in the 1950s and 60s”.

BOARDING PASSES GO DIGITAL Forget the queues and hours spent standing around to get your boarding pass. Qantas has introduced mobile check-in and digital boarding passes for customers travelling between Australia and New Zealand. The technology is being rolled out as part of the airline’s strategy to speed up the journey through the airport for customers travelling internationally.

REEF IS NUMBER ONE IT usually hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons but our gorgeous Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living organism, has just been named top dog in the travel arena, voted the best place in the world to visit by US News and World Report’s World’s Best Places to Visit for 2016-17. Finishing first ahead of such iconic destinations as Paris and Bora Bora, the reef is not the only Aussie destination to make the grade - Sydney also made the list at number 13.

Until now, customers travelling across the Tasman were typically required to queue up for a printed boarding pass. The new technology allows eligible customers travelling between Australia and New Zealand to finalise check-in and passport checks online and head straight to the lounge or boarding gate after passing through immigration and security – all with the digital boarding pass on their mobile device. Implementation of the technology is expected to be completed across all relevant airports by early 2018.

THE 12 PEOPLE HOLDING YOU BACK How to spot them and how to drop them

Do you have friends around you who always see the negative in every situation? What about co-workers who drag you down or make you doubt your abilities? Or those calls you send to voicemail rather than answering because you just can’t cope with that conversation right now’? If you said yes to any of these, it’s time to take control and cut out the people from your network who are holding you back from thriving. Wondering what to look out for? Here are the 12 people you need to cull:

1

The Saboteur sets out to damage your success deliberately and usually for personal gain. Sometimes they may take your idea and run with it. They enjoy asking lots of questions, spending oneon-one time with you so they can pick your brain, and likely use that knowledge for their own end game.

2

The Back-stabber is that someone you usually think of as a friend — until they stab you in the back. It happens; I’ve witnessed it many times over the past few years. Colleagues and clients have shared their disappointment, hurt and frustration after someone copied their jewellery designs, marketing idea or even blog posts that were sold to a media outlet as their own.

3

The Dream Stealer sucks up all your positivity and self-belief. They are usually spotted hanging out around the water cooler or lurking in the office kitchen. They can be friends, colleagues, even family members, who genuinely seem to want to protect you. You may think they have your best interests at heart, but subtly they’ll fill your mind with doubts about your dreams and ambitions.

4

The Traitor says one thing but does something else — usually something that comes at a cost to you because they view the world only as a competition. ‘This is my dance space — and if you step on my toes, I will step back. Harder.’ Disloyalty like this undermines your self-esteem and confidence. 60 LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2017

5

The Narcissist is interested in one thing only: maintaining their own power. They have an exaggerated sense of self-importance, take more than they give and believe they have the solution to everything. They do not like to be challenged on this. They lack empathy, guilt or remorse. Everything they say or do centres on what they want and need, boosts their own ego and implies others are inferior.

6

The Energy Vampire, aka Negative Neville or Debbie Downer, has nothing positive to say, ever. They constantly blame others and make excuses for their situation instead of taking ownership of their own behaviours and actions. Spending time with this person zaps your purpose and passion, drains you of momentum and leaves you feeling down in the dumps and grey with the world

7

The Sceptic wants to bring you down (likely with them) before you achieve too much. They believe your ideas have no merit, feed off your inner fears, and wreak havoc on your anxiety and stress levels. They are there on the sidelines watching and waiting, and they love it when they can say I told you so.

8

The Labeller puts you in a box with a neat little name on it and sets your limitations: ‘You are too junior.’ ‘You’ve never worked in this area before.’ ‘You’re a busy mother — you can’t possibly do [XYZ].’ And they will only support and appreciate you if you fit into this box or the label they have created for you; anything else and you’ll be ‘disappointing’ them.

“Choose to live the life you want”

CAREER

“Their toxic personalities and mean-spirited activities can increase your stress, raise your blood pressure and affect your performance” 9

The Villain is malicious in intent, motivated by power, greed and jealousy. They appear to set up conflict, obstacles and challenges for you and the people you hang out with. Their toxic personalities and mean-spirited activities can increase your stress, raise your blood pressure and affect your performance. They make it difficult for you to get work done. They can act in a sneaky way, enjoy gossiping and often use their manipulative tactics against you.

10

The Bully fights you from all angles, breaking down your spirit until you feel like you have no hope left. Often they appear in the guise of a friendly competitor, until they start intimidating and even humiliating you. They can make you feel submissive, small and without a voice. They exclude you from conversations, meetings or events. They may even become abusive (verbally or physically).

11

The Liar deliberately holds back important information. Maybe they offer to help with your project, but never deliver. Or suggest an introduction to someone who could help you land a new job, only you’re never connected. They may even put you forward for a role or a job, or so you think, but then nothing ever eventuates, no matter how much you follow up.

12

The Critic shuts down your goals, plans, ideas, thoughts and actions before they’ve even begun. They criticise your plans, fill your head with negative nonsense and opinions that lack evidence or substance. They have strong ideas about what success means, how to live life, do business or build a career, and they’re not interested if you don’t think or feel the same way. It’s either their way or the highway. Be brave and reassess the negative people in your network. Choose to play your own game in the way you want. Choose to live the life you want. Choose to take control of your own energy, mindset and momentum. Choose to make your network work for you. Risky Business BUYING A BUSINESS CAN BE A TRICKY AND DAUNTING EXPERIENCE Most of us spend more time in our businesses than we do at home so we should ensure that we do something that we love. Do your due diligence. Make sure that you check out the business fully before you commit to buy it. Have the financial records of the business fully checked by a qualified accountant and during the contract period insist on a trial period where you can work in the business to ensure that those promises that have been made to you are all true. Make enquiries with appropriate suppliers and customers so that you can really get a feeling and understanding of what is important to the business and where the main source of income is generated. Remember that a business usually has many moving parts and often the staff are an integral part of a business’s success, speak to the staff! It is important to speak to an experienced solicitor prior to committing to a contract of sale. They will assist you with ensuring that the contract is subject to your satisfaction with the due diligence enquiries that you may make. It should also adequately deal with the transfer of all of the business items that will be required to run that business including phones, emails websites, staffing, licences and other permits. All businesses are different and the important elements of purchase will change with each type of business it is often the case that the premises from which it is run are essential to its continued success. The lease is therefore essential to the business and the contract should provide that the consent of the landlord to a transfer of the lease or in fact a new lease as the case may be is required. Without this you may not have a premises to operate from. Regularly as buyer needs to ensure that the seller doesn’t simply restart a new business in competition and take staff and customers and therefore it is essential to ensure and appropriate restraint clause is drafted into the contract to protect a buyer. Regardless of the cost of purchasing the business it is a complicated transaction with many moving parts and any buyer should be sure to receive specialist advice before embarking on such a journey. I FOUGHT THE LAW SIX CELEBS WHO FOUND THEMSELVES ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE LAW TIGER WOODS Pro golfer Tiger Woods was arrested for driving under the influence earlier this year. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office, Woods was parked on the side of the road passed out in his vehicle. He performed a field sobriety test and failed. He later pulled out that favourite celebrity excuse “an unexpected reaction from prescribed medication”. LOUIS TOMLINSON Former OneD band member Louis Tomlinson was arrested in Los Angeles earlier this year after an altercation with a paparazzo. According to news reports, Tomlinson and his girlfriend were at the airport when Tomlinson clashed with the paparazzi. Apparently, he was detained after a citizen’s arrest. His lawyer said Tomlinson was provoked.

SHAILENE WOODLEY Shailene Woodley was charged with “criminal trespass and engaging in a riot” while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline (the construction project at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota). She plead guilty and was sentenced to one year unsupervised probation. JOHN STAMOS John Stamos was arrested in 2015 and charged with DUI. He completed a 30-day rehab program after the incident and opted for a plea deal that will see him on probation for three years, require him to attend 52 AA meetings and two drug and alcohol counselling sessions. REESE WITHERSPOON A couple of years ago, America’s sweetheart was not so sweet when she was charged with disorderly conduct after her husband was pulled over by police. She reportedly wouldn’t remain in the car and kept yelling at the officers, at one point shouting the infamous line “Don’t you know who I am?”. EMMA ROBERTS Most recently seen in We’re the Millers, Emma Roberts was arrested for domestic violence after she allegedly attacked her boyfriend who was not charged in the incident.

LIFESTYLE

THE GREATEST GIFT After gastric sleeve surgery with WeightLoss Solutions Australia, Kaz Dalton has realised a life-long dream For many years, Kaz Dalton would look at her expanding waistline in despair. Weight-gain over the years had impacted on her life in many negative ways, but none more so than her fertility. These days, her expanding waistline is a source of joy, and she says she owes it all to life-changing gastric sleeve surgery. “After three years of trying to conceive and struggling with a few issues such as PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and a few other hurdles, we were told the very sad news by our GP that conceiving would be extremely hard, if not impossible,” Kaz says. “Our only option was IVF, but it was also mentioned that my weight was also a huge factor and was possibly one of the other reasons conceiving was extremely difficult.

“My husband and I had a conversation about spending money on IVF or looking at addressing the weight issues, and seeing if that would help address any of the fertility issues. “After looking into the IVF options and also gastric sleeve, we decided that the best option was to work on health first: lose the weight and see if that assisted with fertility. “In May of 2015 I underwent gastric sleeve surgery. “I was advised to wait a minimum of 12 month’s post-op to even begin trying, so 14 months after surgery we decided to start trying for a baby. “Despite being told I may still have to go to IVF, we hit the jackpot and I fell pregnant our third month trying! “I am 100% confident that addressing my health issues with the gastric sleeve, helped in fixing my fertility issues. And thanks to my sleeve and mindfully eating – I’ve only put on a healthy 6.5 kilos during pregnancy, so my midwife is very happy with my progress.”

KAZ’S TIPS ON WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY AND PREGNANCY 1) Heed the advice of the surgeon and do not try and get pregnant within the first 12-18 months. I’ve seen so many stupid decisions made post op by people wanting to have a baby and choosing to ignore the advice of a trained medical professional. The best thing I did was wait! Mentally, physically and health wise it set me up to win. 2) Don’t Google advice about Gastric sleeves and pregnancy. Most of what you’ll find is uneducated guesses. Talk to experts. I am so thankful to WeightLoss Solutions Australia, that they have a team of people that can answer all questions. 3) Continue to be mindful and use what you have learned about mindful eating throughout your pregnancy. You will notice your restriction change a little in your second trimester and may be able to eat slightly more, but if you are mindful about real hunger and your choices, you will have the best and healthiest pregnancy ever! And yes, you will always have enough to feed and nourish your unborn baby.

BEST WISHES FROM FROM WLSA “The WLSA team are all cheering the arrival of baby Dalton! I think we are almost as excited as all the extended family who are in some way linked to this gorgeous couple. “Kaz has the most incredible positive personality that lights up the room wherever she is. As a patient of WLSA we loved every minute of sharing her weight loss results following her sleeve gastrectomy; her insight and humour and know that parenthood will be a wonderful continuation following on from successful weight loss. “What could be a better achievement? Such a powerful message to share with so many couples who would love to be in the same boat.

Doctor, Doctor

Label gets to know one of the Gold Coast’s most celebrated surgeons, Dr John Flynn

What drew you initially to cosmetic surgery? My first surgical job was the burns unit at Royal Brisbane Hospital, where I saw firsthand the trauma of injury and scarring and I learned the first principles of wound care. As much as primary healing was important, so too was attention to the appearance of the scarring of burns victims and the effect that had on their life. I then became interested in skin cancer management, and of course we see a lot of this in Queensland. Most skin cancer occurs on the face and so attention to detail and an aesthetic eye for the best outcome reinforced what I had learned in burns management. From there it was a natural progression into aesthetic or cosmetic surgery. What are some of the greatest advancements you have seen in your years as a cosmetic surgeon? New surgical techniques and better anaesthetic options have changed totally the way we undertake cosmetic surgery. Such improvements have meant that the overwhelming majority of procedures are day cases and even complex surgery can be done safely as a day case. This means better access for patients and a lower cost because a prolonged hospital stay is no longer required. Of course, the really dramatic changes have come in the realm of lasers and in skin care. We can now offer our patients less invasive options to help against ageing. This trend to less invasive procedures will only continue, which is a good thing. What is the most personally rewarding aspect of your role as a surgeon? It is most rewarding when we can make a significant improvement to patients’ lives and have them looking and feeling better about themselves. The changes in patient’s self-confidence is often dramatic to see. Of course, things don’t always go as well as we plan or as well as we would like and so it is very important to have realistic expectations as to what can be achieved and always very important to have a good relationship with your cosmetic surgeon so that if things do need a touch up or a redo then it can be facilitated more easily. Tell us about the role you play helping develop products for private companies? I have always had a strong focus on being able to address adverse outcomes and complications. Much of my practice is referrals of patients from other practices who have had a complication or poor outcome and need some assistance. Most commonly this is not necessarily because someone did something wrong but it is part of the real world. I have often assisted companies and analysed problems which may have occurred with their products or certain procedures and to try to develop preventative strategies or treatment protocols. Some of this work is now featured internationally in product information. I have assisted with the development of treatments using stem cells and plasma injections. This is a new and exciting area of practice. Although there is way too much hype about some of these things,

76 LABEL MAGAZINE WINTER 2017

when utilised appropriately good results are usually forthcoming. Because this is a new and developing area it is important to educate patients and colleagues as much as possible. There are a number of good cosmetic applications for stem cells and plasma especially combined with good skin care and lasers Could you tell us about some of the exciting new techniques or procedures in surgery? Well, one would be the stem cell field as mentioned above and in particular with regard to bladder problems, urinary stress incontinence. Nobody wants to be forced into an incontinence pad, so the ability to treat this effectively seriously changes people’s lives in a very practical way. Another new concept is using special threads to achieve a less invasive face lift. Naturally a Thread Lift will not last as long as a surgical face lift and the result will not be as good: but it is far less invasive, so lower risk profile and much lower cost and it has become very popular. With injectables advancing so much, have they impacted on cosmetic surgery? We can do so much more with injectables now; fillers, wrinkle toxins, plasma, stem cells. Also, people are starting to have these options at a younger age and so this improves the ageing profile and reduces and delays the need for surgery. So, we are seeing a trend away from surgery. However, when surgery is needed then that is what should take place. It is a matter of what is appropriate for achievable results in any given patient. Overseas surgical ‘holidays’ are gaining a lot of publicity and popularity. Do you have any thoughts on these? There is no doubt that there are good doctors overseas as well as there are good hospitals. But how to you access these? Do you really want your choice of surgeon or hospital to be determined by an agent who gets a commission for sending you there? It is illegal in Australia for doctors to receive or pay commissions for referral, for good reason. What makes it OK for this overseas? Complications may occur wherever surgery is performed. If you get a complication and you are several thousand kilometres away from your surgeon, what happens then? Everyone has heard about DVT (blood clots) caused or contributed to by flying. Did you know that in the post-operative period the risk of DVT is much, much higher? Do you realise that 30 percent of people who get a blood clot will die from it? Do you realise that sometimes the first symptom of a DVT is a sudden death? What is your advice in general to someone considering cosmetic surgery? Think about it fully and decide whether this is something you really want, and make sure you do it for yourself, not because someone else wants you to. Don’t be talked into it by anyone. You are a person, a person with worth and there is much more to each of use than the wrong shape of nose or too big or too small breasts. Doing cosmetic surgery for the right reasons, when you are well informed and have done your research is the best way to have a successful outcome, provided you have realistic expectations.
