Queen cover story
Kate
The face and look of her generation, Kate Moss is an iconic figure who changed fashion with her anti-supermodel appeal.
L
egend. In a world of reality shows and You Tube wannabes, Kate Moss is a genuine legend. Over three decades, this not overly tall (1.7m), uniquely beautiful woman has now become one of the most enduring icons of her generation. Her career as a model started when she was spotted by a Storm Model Agency representative at 14. The daughter of a barmaid and travel agent who grew up in South London, Kate was discovered by chance walking through JFK airport in New York on her way home from a holiday in the Bahamas. That first contact led to her first cover shoot for British mag ‘The Face’ in 1997 and a career was launched. Since then, she has graced covers of the most prestigious magazines worldwide and appeared on the cover of British Vogue a record 36 times. Part of her appeal is that she was always against type. She became a poster girl for ‘heroin chic’ – dark eyes, ultra-thin and strangely glamorous – in the early 1990s. In one interview she shot down the claims that she was the living embodiment of ‘that’ look by declaring. “I had never even taken heroin – it was nothing to do with me at all. I was thin, but that’s because I was doing shows, working really hard. You’d get home from work and there was no food. You’d get to work in the morning, there was no food. Nobody took you out for lunch when I started.” She was the anti-supermodel – a direct contradiction of the tall, curvaceous women such as Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson and Naomi Campbell. Her look was described as grunge and dirty realism. Whatever she had, it struck a huge chord because her look changed fashion. »

cover story The many faces of Kate; from being discovered at 14 (below) to the first face of St. Tropez.
Her list of contracts over the years is a who’s who of some of the biggest names in fashion; Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Rimmel, YSL, Louis Vuitton and Bulgari. Is it any wonder then that her immersion in and among the best designers and creatives would produce someone with her own unique style and flair? She quickly became an international fashion icon with her unerring ability to start a trend simply by being photographed heading out to dinner in her unique mix of glamour and boho. With actress Sienna Miller, she is credited with creating the boho-chic look that swept the world. Her fashion finds are nothing if not diverse. Everything from Ugg boots, ballet flats, denim cut-off shorts, skinny jeans and pirate boots, from Alexander McQueen’s skull scarf to Balenciaga handbags. If Kate was seen wearing it, the world would soon follow. Of course for anyone that famous, her every move was soon being chronicled. She and actor Johnny Depp became an item, leading to a brief engagement. His influence is still felt today because he gave her a mantra to live by which would guarantee that she was able to maintain her sang-froid in the face of unrelenting pressure on her private life. “He told me, ‘Never complain, never explain!’” After Johnny, she was on the arm of notorious musician Pete Doherty of The Libertines and then Babyshambles fame. Her daughter Lila Grace Moss Hack was born in 2002, via editor Jefferson Hack. The man who was eventually to become her husband was another musician, guitarist for The Kills, Jamie Hince, who she married in 2011, wearing a wedding dress made by her good friend John Galliano. Her response to the paparazzi and constant media attention has changed of late. After being inducted into the International BestDressed List Hall of Fame she explained her reasons. “I usually just wear black jeans now. Or grey. If you do a different look every day, they’re going to be waiting for the next look, and then it’s a paparazzi shot. Whereas if you just wear the same thing, then they get bored and leave you alone.” It’s a far cry from the old days. With that much exposure it was only a matter of time before she became embroiled in controversy. During her time with Pete Doherty in 2005, the Daily Mirror ran front page and inside photos that appeared to be Moss snorting several lines of a white powder. That firestorm of publicity resulted in several of her contracts being terminated. Swedish fashion house H&M dropped her as the featured model for a range designed by Stella McCartney – it was reportedly a multi-million dollar deal – and followed soon after by Chanel and Burberry in a decision to also drop their endorsement. No charges were ever laid and while Kate never admitted drug use, she did issue 10
St. Tropez do it so well that you look natural, you don’t have that fear, which I always did, of going streaky and not being able to fix it – total nightmare. There is no need to go around with that pasty pallor, which is really exciting.” an apology. The old line that there’s no such thing as bad publicity proved to be true. Her yearly earnings since that time have been as high as $9 million and she has been ranked in the top 100 richest women in the U.K. with a net worth approaching $100 million. Her enduring appeal and name recognition has been rewarded of late with other top contracts. Kate has just been announced as the first Face and Body Ambassador for the market leading self-tanning brand St. Tropez. A fan of the brand for many years, her reason for the endorsement was simple – she likes and uses the product. “I have used St. Tropez since it started. Around 15 years ago, the first time I went to Ibiza I didn’t want to be the only white person on the beach so I had a ‘St. Tropez’. They do it so well that you look natural, you don’t have that fear, which I always did, of going streaky and not being able to fix it – total nightmare. There is no need to go around with that pasty pallor anymore, which is really exciting.” Her interests away from modeling and fashion have included dabbling in music – without great commercial success – publishing and art. In 2006, British sculptor Marc Quinn unveiled ‘Sphinx’, a sculpture of Kate in a yoga pose. She also posed naked for noted artist Lucien Freud and a photographic book entitled ‘Kate Moss’ was published to great acclaim. She did release a signature line for U.K. fashion outlet Top Shop which was also picked up by Barneys in New York. The collection of 50 designs included clothes, bags, shoes and belts, with an entry point of around $20 rising to $250. Vests, leather jackets, skinny jeans and mini-dresses were all part of the range each featuring the letter K woven into the design. Her life, as befitting a mother in her 40s has changed also. “I don’t really go to clubs anymore. I’m actually quite settled, I live in Highgate with my dog and my husband and my daughter! I’m not a hell-raiser. But don’t burst the bubble. Behind closed doors, for sure I’m a hell-raiser.” Domestic goddess she may be now, but by any measure it has been a life lived at top pace in the full glare of the public eye. So, what then was her final piece of advice for the fashion conscious out there? “Always clean hair. That’s a must. If in doubt, wash it.” So simple, but so true.

driving man
Beric Lynton talks about his life and being groomed to run the prestigious Bruce Lynton BMW dealership.
I
t is never easy for a son following in the footsteps of a hugely successful businessman such as his father Bruce but Beric Lynton has been groomed to run the many facets of the business from a young age. “I used to pump petrol in the garage we had here when I was a teenager and then over the years I’ve worked in every department so I really know all aspects of the business. School was at T.S.S. then I attended Bond University and did a commerce degree majoring in marketing and management. I still worked here through all those years and it was invaluable experience.” Times change and in the 39 years the dealership has existed, the way business is done has also changed. “The internet has altered things dramatically. Today customers come in having done all their research on line about a particular car so they usually know more than the salesperson. The old way of selling has changed forever but the fundamentals of listening, treating people with respect and working to establish a long term relationship are still very important parts of our business. The one thing that absolutely distinguishes the Gold Coast is we still have that big country town feeling. Someone can walk in wearing stubbies and thongs and then buy a top of the range car. They could have just been gardening or out on a boat, been thinking about buying and then strolled in to make the purchase. This is not Sydney or Melbourne and we treat everybody with the same respect.” Beric’s business and management development was an ongoing education both practical and textbook. When Bruce purchased Land Rover in 1995, Beric worked in sales before becoming the group marketing manager in 1997 and then becoming general manger in mid 1998. “Everything I did was part of a learning curve. I was sent to Munich for 12 months to study at the BMW Academy. There were 10 of us from all over the world and to this day we are still friends and I now have a global network of people who I’m able to
call.” The Bruce Lynton Group has expanded enormously since it first opened and the range of diversity of vehicles and services held under the one automotive umbrella is staggering. “We sell Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Land Rover, Mini, Ssangyong and Chery, a new Chinese make which sells for $9,990. We’ve also have our own paint and panel shop and a Bridgestone tyre business. The idea is that customers can drop off their car for any service and it can all be done ‘in house’ by our team, creating a one stop shop scenario.” With more than 130 staff, differing marques and varying problems that any big business faces on a daily basis, Beric’s relaxation is racing cars. “There is a BMW M1 which races in the Australian Manufacturers Championship. There was a famous crash in 2005 where I hit a wall at 176km/h but I walked away unscathed which was the best advertisement for BMW safety. I don’t have a lot of free time but my greatest joy is spending time with my three year old daughter Darcy. My wife Tina and I went through six years of IVF which was heart breaking at times but seeing her now makes it all worthwhile.” Much like the gleaming cars that are on display in the Southport showroom of Bruce Lynton BMW, Beric Lynton is also looking sleek, polished and with trim lines. “Yes, I’ve been on a fitness regimen to lose weight and get fitter,” he grins. “I have a target weight which I’m hoping to reach and I’m getting there.” The years of hard work by his parents Bruce and Margaret has paid off handsomely. The business is successful but more importantly their son has proved to be a worthy successor both in and out of the dealership.

makris magic
Don’t be fooled by the quiet exterior – Carol Makris knows what she likes and she absolutely loves Marina Mirage.
S
oftly spoken and perfectly groomed, Carol Makris has a different take to most women on retail therapy. She loves shopping centres but is not the shopaholic of the family. “I love to see how fashions are put together and I do appreciate shopping but Con is the one who loves to shop in our family.” As the wife of property tycoon Con, Carol is sitting in the boardroom of their newly acquired ‘baby’, Marina Mirage, and talking enthusiastically about one of the most unique shopping centres in the world. “Con and I have been spending quite a bit of time looking at the photos of the centre when it was first opened. The Food Court, the statues and the exquisite tiling really made this place one of a kind. I’ve been fortunate enough to have travelled around the world and I’ve never seen a centre that has the features this one possesses. The water views, architecture, restaurants, and up market boutiques makes this a one off.” Carol and Con have holidayed on the Gold Coast from their home base of Adelaide for many years and when the opportunity arose to purchase Marina Mirage they jumped at the chance. “We were in Dubai when the legal papers were sent to us for the final signatures. We couldn’t wait to take over and now we have the Marina with all the boats as well so it makes this a truly special destination. When we come up here it never feels like we are working. People seem much happier, the air is brighter, and the tenants are so warm and inviting. We have a high percentage of owner/traders here and we are always having coffee with them to find out their thoughts and ideas. There are plans in place and we’d like to bring in some more fresh food options to increase the diversity but we’re talking to people all the time to get feedback.” “It’s exciting that we’ve also recently secured a number of new fashion tenants including a new bridal boutique, which is so wonderful to have in the centre. We wanted to create a one stop destination
for brides, so now we have everything from lingerie, shoes, jewellery, hair and makeup to our restaurants as reception venues.” In total the Makris Group own nine shopping centres around Australia. “Except for this one they are all in the capital cities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Con always says that we can’t have favourites but we both have a real soft spot for this one. The recognition factor for Marina Mirage around Australia is enormous and it fits perfectly with what you might call the Makris factor. We are about quality across all aspects which describes Marina Mirage perfectly.” Away from work how does Carol like to relax? “I enjoy catching up with friends over a glass of champagne. I love going to the movies and enjoy travelling. Decorating is also an interest which is what I’ve been doing with our condo at Palazzo Versace. In Europe it’s interesting to see new trends in fit-outs and design. It gives me inspiration, and I love introducing that international flavour back to Australia. Also we are currently working on plans for a number of new special events at Marina Mirage now that the Makris Group have united the marina and the shopping centre again.” So we get to her shopping habits? “Con loves it and I don’t. I’ll see something and say that I like it and Con will then try and get me to buy it. I have to explain to him that just because I like it doesn’t mean that I want it. It’s a bit of a role reversal,” she says with a laugh. That is a good analogy for Carol – nothing is quite as you would expect. A quietly determined woman who knows her own mind and who is happiest when she is working towards achieving a goal.

Estée Lauder was among the first to understand that night time is the right time for skin to repair the damage done during the day – the importance of skin’s 24-hour circadian rhythm and how clock genes are critical to the synchronisation of natural skin repair and protection. Introducing Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II – their most advanced, comprehensive serum ever. Estée Lauder scientists were among the first to understand that Catabolysis is a critical night time cellular repair process, a natural purification process that peaks in cells at night and is pivotal to skin’s natural repair. Advanced Night Repair dramatically reduces the look of every key visible sign of ageing for a younger look. Wrinkles and lines look significantly reduced and skin is strengthened to help prevent further damage.

peter alexander behind the brand
You have been named as Australian Designer of the Year. Considering you started your business in your mother’s kitchen, what did winning that award mean? God, that was so long ago. There must have been a rough year for fashion! I consider myself more a fashion merchant rather than designer (I do not really sew!) Describe your design philosophy philosophy. Simple. I ask myself if the collection is fun, makes you smile and most importantly comfortable. Your PJs are now sold around the world. Why do you think your brand has become so popular? It’s a unique brand globally. It seems to resonate with people all over the world. I guess we all like to celebrate our inner child when it comes to nightwear. Was it always fashion that attracted you? Not at all – I wanted to be a caterer when I finished school! I sort of fell into fashion. To cut a long story short, I started working at Sportsgirl as a shop assistant to save some money and my best friend worked there and I just realised I had a knack for that industry. You started your business at 22. Looking back, what advice would you give that young Peter Alexander now? Sometimes breaking the rules is the best thing to do and mistakes can lead you to new, unplanned success. Apart from design, what is your secret skill or talent? I am a good person and treat people well, therefore staff who have worked with me have always wanted my brand to do well. It makes a big difference. Did you study fashion design or do you just have a God-given talent? I would say it’s more a dog-given talent! I never studied anything, but I did have a dog named Penny (my brand mascot) who had a very good eye for prints! Describe your perfect bedroom? Dark, comfy, soft bed, no alarm clock and my dog sleeping on my bed! Who has been your greatest influence in business and design? Hard one to answer – I get influenced by everything and it constantly changes – but in regards to business, my dad who taught me to be a gentleman in business, not a shark.

The Lincoln Center pulsated with glamour from September 5 to 12 with the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. 113 designers launched their Spring/Summer 2014 collections and Label has chosen the looks your evening wardrobe is lusting after. Black is far from bland in gowntown this season with nude illusions which could be mistaken for world’s chicest tribal tattoo at Carmen Marc Valvo. Label loves lingerie motifs by BCBG Max Azria and bedazzled chinoiserie at Zang Toi. Swingingly sophisticated necklines and sequins stun at Pamella Roland and Nicole Miller reinforces the brilliance of brocade. On a seaside journey, we have Venexiana with a bejewelled Grecian nymphette in seafoam blue. Tadashi Shoji gleams with mother of pearl and the trending sheer décolletage. Supima brings us glistening waves of ombre and B Michael America shines with metallic aqua. At the orchard, midriff is key at Monique Lhuillier in blood orange and apricot while Zac Posen delivers a peach corset screaming for Christina Hendricks’ body. Stonefruit skirts are so dreamy at Jenny Packham, one should be accompanied by a fan for full effect. J. Mendel styles structure and sophistication in baby pink and Reem Acra presents the golden gown crying out for a Globe red carpet moment.

Celebrating more than 23 years of making women feel beautiful I’m celebrating almost a ¼ of a century in my fashion business... I see something beautiful in every woman I meet. Every woman is different... she has different needs and specific looks that work for her... alongside looks that don’t. Fashion and designing for YOU is about creating what IS you, not what’s the flavour of the season. At BLISS FASHION EMPORIUM we don’t follow WE LEAD, utilising my Italian background and knowledge of timeless, sensual anti-ageing clothing. Our clothing brings you happiness, self-esteem, compliments and a romantic energy that radiates love as you transform in our garments. I am passionate about what I show you, help you select and understand what is right for “who you are now” and what size you are now. After gaining weight myself I have evolved to not worry, but to dress and live for today. My team and I look forward to dressing you. Sonia Stradiotto, Designer/Founder BFE

Youthful skin Fillers or liquid facelifts could be the way to a new you. Softer, fresher features with less creases can be easily achieved.
S
o many of us are healthy and fit but have started to notice that as with everyone who gets older, we start to lose fat and muscle tone from our face. That is where the benefit of having injectables or fillers in your face can tweak your look taking away the tiredness that comes from life and give you back the look you deserve. Dr John Flynn is the ideal medical professional to discuss any worries or concerns you may have about this or any procedure you may be considering. As with so many people the most important thing from their perspective is to ensure that the injectables are part of a natural look and you don’t look as though you have had anything ‘done’. In most cases the entire procedure takes about 30 minutes. A local anaesthetic is administered so there is no pain and afterwards there’s a little bit of discomfort similar to the aftermath of a dentist. Dr Flynn takes great pride in his results and routinely will do the cheek area on one side of your face and then show you in a mirror exactly the effect so that you can judge for yourself if that was the look you are after. The difference may be only a few millimetres but your cheeks will become firm, full and lifted but not in an obvious way. Clients tend to make their visits on a yearly basis for a consultation and the chance to ensure that they can have minor adjustments done to their satisfaction. There’s no bruising and no down time and the secret lays in the abilities of the expert, in this case Dr Flynn, who is doing the procedure. The aim of the injectable is to make it so that nobody notices any radical difference but simply think that you look younger and fresher. As one happy client said, “It has given me a lot more confidence. I’m looking healthier and I’m not presenting myself as so drawn and tired.” Another benefit for clients of Cosmedic who have a non-surgical treatment is complimentary ‘WOW’ Facial Treatment, which is a combination of medical grade diamond wand treatment and high frequency ultrasound. It is designed to soften fine lines and wrinkles, help smooth coarsely textured skin, decrease the appearance of scarring, pore size and hyper-pigmentation. The aim for all of these treatments is to improve skin clarity for a brighter, plumper, healthy, glowing appearance.
Dermal fillers have been called “liquid facelifts” because they offer many of the benefits of a surgical facelift without the downtime. If you would like to restore youthful fullness to your face, plump lips, enhance shallow contours or soften those facial creases and wrinkles, dermal fillers may be the answer. While fillers are a very safe option, possible bruising and minimal discomfort from the needle may occur in some cases. Although they can’t help with excess sagging skin, these soft tissue fillers can add more volume and provide immediate results at a lower cost than surgery. However, these treatments aren’t permanent, and they must be repeated and maintained. Some dermal fillers are used in conjunction with other skin rejuvenation treatments such as injections of botulinum toxin. Dr John Flynn will consult with you, assess your needs and recommend one or a combination of treatments to achieve your desired results. To discuss dermal fillers or any other cosmetic procedure, phone Cosmedic and Skin Clinic on 07 5555 7888 for further information.

Bvlgari’s new fragrance, Omnia Crystalline, is a fusion of elements. A mix of Italian and Asian fragrances with lotus flower and mandarin at the top and sandalwood, benzoin and musks to enhance.
A strong alchemy of addictive contrasts are released with Dolce & Gabbana’s Intense. This oriental floral ignites the senses while provocative notes of vaporous white flowers incite deep passion.
Valentina Oud Assoluto is a precious, captivating elixir, evoking the eternal femininity of Valentina. Orange blossom plays with the effervescence of cardamom aided by rose blossom, saffron and vanilla.

A dollop of double Preston, please! Label gets fresh with Matt. How has your cooking style evolved since your first book Matt Preston’s 100 Best Recipes? Certainly “Fast, Fresh and Unbelievably Delicious” is a much more summery book with a lot of vibrant food but that’s as much because lots of those recipes didn’t make it in to the first book. I do think however that writing my column for the Courier Mail and Daily Telegraph for a few years has increasingly focussed my recipes on being easy to make and no fail. That’s been exacerbated by cooking on MasterClass on MasterChef this year – I want to be 1000% sure that anything I demo on the show will work when you make it at home. That’s sort of important when you’ve got a few million people watching across some 170 countries! We love the concept of a sealed section for recipes just too naughty for daily consumption in Matt Preston’s Fast, Fresh and Unbelievably Delicious. What is your most decadent indulgence in your latest book? It may well be the figs stuffed with white castello and wrapped in prosciutto. These are baked and explode in the mouth in a riot of sweet and salt! The giant choc chip cookie ice cream sandwich is pretty good too. And neither of those were naughty enough to make it into the sealed section! How has your home cooking been influenced by your time in the MasterChef kitchen? I spent seven months watching people cook, handing out advice, and listening to the advice of culinary geniuses like Marco Pierre White, Heston Blumenthal and George and Gary. You’ll see those fingerprints all over the book in dishes like a simple plate of scallops and sugar snap peas that Marco was in love with, or the instant ice creams that impressed Heston and Gaz. Then Monty, the old MC chef, who helped me with MasterClass gave me some brilliant ideas like a dessert that only takes 120 seconds to make! We are big fans of your seasonal suggestions. What is on the Christmas day menu at the Preston house? Pretty much everything in the Christmas section of the book – stuffed turkey, brussel sprouts and bacon, a really yummy glazed ham, Jude’s Christmas pudding ice cream and one of the giant pannacottas (perhaps the one with a layer of redcurrant jelly and fresh redcurrants! The Australian summer is perfect for your panna cottas. What are your tips for disaster-proofing this delicate dessert? Follow the recipe! Use the right sized mould for the ingredients. Treat the gelatine with respect. Don’t leave the set pannacotta too long in the hot water then help it slip out of the mould after it has set; if you leave it too long it will melt at the edges! We’re still baffled by your 80-second sponge with 40-second compote and 20-second cream. How did you discover this speedy treat? It was Monty Koludrovic’s idea based on something that Ferran Adria from El Bulli did in the late nineties with foam guns and microwaves. This is much more of an Aussie, CWA- interpretation! It’s important to note that when you read the book you’ll see that there are lots of people who have helped me out or been willing to share recipes that I love. I’d rather ask to use the real recipe and credit a friend or influence – but then recipes are for sharing! In your rulebook for finger food, you insist party pies and sausage rolls are a must “because they are part of being an Aussie.” What is your first memory of these flaky favourites on Australian shores? Cold Friday night football at the MCG, rather too many Bundy and cokes (after I suspect rather too many beers) and then the welcome warm heft of a pie at three quarter time. Perfect! What five ingredients are ever-present in your pantry? Cucumbers, tinned tuna, lemons, pasta, feta, parmesan, olive oil, apples, dry pasta, tomatoes, a hunk of bacon or pancetta, leeks, chilli, limes, eggs, salted capers, crispy shallots, barley, quinoa, Greek yoghurt, celery, iceberg lettuce, frozen peas, frozen corn, tinned peaches, condensed milk, canned pulses (especially chickpeas and cannellini beans), almonds, cashews, pepitas and far too many spices, vinegars, sugar and oils. Sorry, I’ve never been very good at counting… that’s why there were actually 204 recipes in my last book (100 Best Recipes) – and why I suspect there are more than 204 in this one! What changes between cooking for two and considering tiny tastebuds? The one you love is never as rude about what you cook. Their tastes also tend to stay consistent. What is your preference comparing red and green chilli? I like the Indian approach – red dried and green fresh! Although I do love the disgracefully moreish lemongrass and red chilli sambal in the book – the trouble is that like the bacon jam it’s the sort of stuff that you involuntarily find yourself at the fridge eating out of the pot!

meating place So much more than a steak restaurant, Moo Moo is reaching new dining heights.
I
f location, as the real estate axiom would have it, is everything, the Moo Moo The Wine Bar and Grill is certainly in a prime position. Just near enough to the restaurant strip of Broadbeach and the Oracle complex yet far enough removed to make the diner feel as though they are in another world. Approaching the restaurant one is struck by the warm buzz emanating from within and the crowd of people clustered around the indoor/outdoor MooBar. Overlooking Victoria Park, it is a stately ship sailing serenely on a sea of green grass. The décor is understated elegance. Natural stone, leather chairs, curved and padded walls and discreet lighting all add to the ambience. A wall of wine takes pride of place showcasing the vast array of vintages and styles available to diners. This looks and feels like a private club but which is open to all. This is no rugged fitout that determinedly screams men and manly things – the room has a warm embrace that invites the diner to sit, relax and enjoy the very best of what is on offer. As the name suggests this is a restaurant that takes meat very seriously. The menu lists some of the best cuts of meat available in Australia. The Moo Moo signature dish, a 1kg Wagyu rump roast daubed with spices, is a melt in your mouth, salivating special event that will live long in the memory of those who get to savour this dish. Oven roasted and sealed on a spit, the rump is hand carved at the table and then served with a rocket and parmesan salad with delicious duck fat sautéed kipfler potatoes and a trio of chef ’s sauce selections designed to suit every palate. If that is not to your liking, the menu also features different Wagyu from other regions each

with their own distinctive taste. Black Angus sourced from some of Australia’s best beef producers, some of them exclusive to Moo Moo, come with varying ages and either pasture fed or grass fed. Another recent addition to the menu is Charcuterie which features house bread, caper berries, Spanish peppers and cornichons served with a variety of mouth-watering meats including air dried Wagyu, truffle salami and acorn fed ham. Naturally there are other dishes besides beef but in true Moo Moo style they each come with a point of difference. Oysters, crab, chicken, scallops, fish, prawns, pork and duck are all on the menu and are treated by the kitchen brigade with the same care and attention. Menus change for many reasons but the ever popular truffled shoestring fries are still served hot and tasty. You suspect there would be a small riot if these were taken off the menu. If you like your potatoes heartier try a taste test of the Wagyu Fat Nicola potatoes. Oven roasted with confit of garlic, thyme and rosemary, they are a serious threat to the popularity of their slender cousins. An array of tempting desserts round out the meal. The Raspberry Soufflé is a particular favourite as is the house made chocolate block with honeycomb bark and strawberries but there is one that will truly rock your world. The chocolate caramel Brioche Doughnuts with caramelised pear, white chocolate delice and espresso anglaise is a two thumbs up, dessert lovers’ delight. Try it, you will love it. A great restaurant understands that any meal should be an event, a symphony requiring the wait staff, kitchen brigade and customer to all play their parts to perfection. At Moo Moo The Wine Bar and Grill, you have that rare combination of a restaurant that has managed to meld the various parts of the dining ‘orchestra’ into one triumphant and rousing overture that satisfies all the senses. Bravo to all concerned. Located at 2685 Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach. Call 07 5539 9952, visit moomoorestaurant.com or facebook.com/MooMooTheWineBarAndGrill

S
ummer is here and if ever a restaurant was designed for the warmer months it is Glass Dining & Lounge Bar. We have one of the best views in Australia looking over the Broadwater with the multi-million dollar boats at anchor seemingly at your fingertips. As usual we have been privileged to play host to many celebrities in the past few months. The Gold Coast Titans and the Gold Coast Suns came in at different times for a team get-together before their off season and to enjoy some down time after a long season. Wonderful guests, superbly behaved and every one of them is a credit to our city. When Alicia Moore decided she wanted to have caviar for her birthday during her concert call in Brisbane, what did she do? She asked her chef to ring Glass and asked him to provide some humanely harvested caviar for her celebration. We were only too happy to help one of our favourite artists. Other celebrity sightings were former Essendon superstar Matthew Lloyd and his wife Lisa who came in for a visit while they were in town on holidays. It was a repeat visit for Matthew and Lisa so they must have loved the food and service from their previous visits. The Gold Coast played host to 1500 delegates from Clubs Australia when they came to our city for their annual conference at the G.C.C.E.C. Matthew Ball enticed the N.S.W. Premier Barry O’Farrell in for a private dining room experience while a multitude of delegates also took the chance to wine and dine with us during their stay. Very popular man is Mr O’Farrell because locals and visitors alike all took

the time to give him a friendly hello. It makes you realise that there is no such thing as a night off for a top politician. There are some big changes afoot for Glass with a small renovation in the pipeline. A new menu is also being planned so watch this space because some exciting things are about to happen over summer and beyond. Melbourne Cup was again a huge success with a packed out restaurant cheering home the winner. Once again I fronted up to be a fun ‘bookie’ and once again I managed to confuse myself and end up paying out. Win or lose it is always a great day and most of our guests stayed on for dinner and drinks long after the last race. With live music and big screen TVs showing every race on the day it was certainly another day of fun. We have some very big special events coming up in the next few months. Glass is the perfect venue to stage your office Christmas party so call me and I can show you a wide range of catered options. Tickets are on sale for our ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ New Year’s Eve party but do get in quickly because this sells out almost immediately. Another special event is Valentine’s Day so if you wish to treat that special someone to an extraordinary night, be sure to reserve a table. May your glass always be half full,

Shopping heaven, tourist treasure, a city of cosmopolitan tastes and contrasting cultures – Bangkok has it all.

Marriott
here’s something about Bangkok. It is not just any opinion – it has been named the most visited city in MasterCard’s Global Destination Cities Index and also won the prestigious Travel + Leisure Magazine’s title of “World’s Best City” for four consecutive years. It is a heady mix of East and West. Traditional markets mixed with some of the world’s best shopping or street food contrasting with top end restaurants. This is a city that has embraced change while still retaining that unique Thai experience and earned the country the reputation of the ‘Land of Smiles’. Within this bustling city of 8 million are many accommodation options for the traveler and one of the very best is the JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok. A luxury hotel in the truest sense of the word, it offers a secluded world within Bangkok. Situated on the famous Sukhumvit Road, it’s close to the business and entertainment centres,

shopping districts and the wonderfully efficient BTS SkyTrain. The 441 deluxe rooms and suites feature plush bedding and a range of other facilities including in-room safe, mini-bar, high-speed internet and the new remote Jack Pack plug-and-play system. What really set my stay apart and took it literally to another level was staying in one of the 108 executive rooms. Spanning three floors (16-19th floors), the rooms have been recently renovated to provide more space and the addition of a 106cm or 42” flat LED TV enhances your widescreen viewing pleasure. The rooms are tastefully decorated in black and white with silver accents in the décor while the grey walls add a modern masculine look yet with a soft and relaxing feel. The benefits of enjoying your stay in this section of the hotel are enormous. The rooms are a sizeable 33sqm each and executive guests also get to enjoy the complimentary services and amenities of the

Don’t miss... Diversity is key when planning things to do in Bangkok. With everything from ancient temples, the Grand Palace, Floating Markets and the Calypso Lady Boy Show – they are all there for your enjoyment. Here are a few different things to try. • MBK: A six level shopping mall which has everything from the cheapest knock-offs to top brand electronics. Venture into Tokyu the department store next door for great bargains. • ZENSE: With five top-rated restaurants, hip cocktail bars and gourmet wine bar, plus downtown’s most expansive panoramic view, ZENSE offers unbeatable variety in a deluxe atmosphere. • Siam Paragon: The major shopping malls are all linked by walkways but Siam Paragon is a great place to start. Fantastic food outlets and with most of the top brands you can spend days in here. • Royal City Avenue: Better known as RCA, this is clubbing central in Bangkok. An officially designated nightlife zone spread out over four blocks so you can be assured of a party seven nights a week.
world-class Executive Lounge on the 16th floor. Starting the day with my own delicious continental breakfast in what is your own exclusive club added enormously to the enjoyment of my stay in Bangkok. Add the chance to unwind after a day of shopping or relaxing with complimentary nightly cocktails, the time-saving benefits of express check-in and check-out and a fully-equipped business center as part of the experience and you have the makings of a perfect stay all of which are simply at your fingertips. Like all top luxury hotels the culinary delights available are endless. Choose from award-winning buffet at Marriott Café, sizzling cool food on a hot plate at Nami Teppanyaki Steakhouse, premium fresh sushi at Tsu Japanese Restaurant, fresh daily pastries at Bangkok Baking Company, or my favourite, the Manhattan Bar by New York Steakhouse. A stylish fusion of classic design and New York taste, it offers a range of fabulous selections from original Martinis and an extensive whisky selection to selected premium wines. The menu for the New York Steakhouse is littered with classic dishes including the Empire State Burger made with juicy Australian Wagyu, freshly made crab cakes packed with the delicious crab meat and the best-selling Caesar Salad. The concept of the Manhattan goes beyond that of a hotel bar since it represents much more than a place for guests to enjoy the occasional drink. Wood flooring and brown hued wall panels are complemented with low rise black leather sofas that sit confidently in between the modish wooden doors. For contrast the space also holds comfortable velvet chairs in intriguing purple and grey with red to ivory décor artistic pieces. Photographs of New York City adorn the walls featuring close-up shots of the Statue of Liberty, busy New York City streets, and vintage automobiles add to what can easily make guests feel relaxed in a sleek residential setting. It is literally a slice of New York in the Orient and a worldly wonder of gastronomic choices. Talking to Tom S’prayoon, Director of Sales and Marketing for JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok, he explained the rationale behind the recent changes and upgrades. “With over 15 years of operations and service, we are always seeking ways to improve the quality of the experience for our clients. The response to the developments from the increased space and sleek new décor in the executive rooms and the consistency of our excellent service – we are always striving to go above and beyond – have all generated rave reviews from our guests. Our service has always been of the highest standard so it is gratifying to hear that the recent advancements have enhanced the JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok experience.” Try it, you’ll like it. Interiors Addict
A
treasure house of delights awaits anyone walking into Rochelle Meehl’s Runway Addict and Runway Interiors at The Brickworks. Fashion, homewares, furniture, curtains, wall paper, glassware and shoes – the list is endless but there is one common denominator – everything is fabulously stylish. So is she an interior designer or a fashion retailer? “I’m an interior designer who loves fashion. I like to think of Runway as a blend of two stores. In my mind everything to do with design of any kind flows on from the top fashion catwalks. The styles, themes and colours are set in train by fashion designers and everything else follows.” For many years Rochelle worked with her interior designer mother Judy Goodin before branching out with the concept of Runway at the Brickworks. “While my main thing is interior design I do love the fashion side. The clothes are best described as L.A. Edgy, it suits our lifestyle and caters perfectly for our younger market.” The design is something that Rochelle truly adores. Samples of material and wallpaper, design books, cuttings are scattered on her design bar, a testament to her current works and her love of always looking for that individual piece that will make a room come alive. “Clients do like my aesthetics, but I do have to respond to the customers needs and requests. We were recently chosen to be the Gold Coast agent for Designers Guild, an international powerhouse of tasteful living based in London and created by Tricia Guild. It is a real coup for us because she is such a force in the design world. The range includes everything you can imagine – fabrics, bedding, accessories – she uses colour and light wonderfully and suits my L.A and New York vibe. ”
The range of services Rochelle and her team provide for interior design are seemingly endless. “We do everything from restyling and covering lampshades and furniture, to staging and styling homes for sale or commercial projects. I take pride in the fact that there is always an interior designer on the floor so if any one walks in there is someone with real knowledge and skill available. Runway Addict is also the only Gold Coast retail design shop to stock Ralph Lauren fabric and wallpapers and we also carry Christian Lacroix. We have fabulous samples of cushions, rugs, throws, fabrics and wallpaper here at all times so that anyone can get a sense of how something will look before they make a purchase. I like to make sure that we stock things on the fashion and the homeware side that are unique and have a point of difference. An example is some Portuguese hand pressed glassware I discovered. Through the shop’s social media sites I showcased them and within a week had nearly sold out of the limited stock I was able to obtain. This shop is a fusion of fashion and design.” As if to illustrate that point she pulls out a catalogue of Jeffrey Campbell shoes. “Aren’t they so L.A but so Gold Coast, just like the Wildfox we stock,” she says pointing to some of the more colourful creations. From working with the likes of the late Brian and Kathy Ray to her current involvement in the re-branding and design of Couran Cove Resort, Rochelle is someone who likes to create, display and show things with a story to tell. A keen eye, an eagerness to explore the creative paths less travelled and an ability to translate all that she has learned into a personal statement for her many clients is what drives this multi-dimensional and innovative woman.

merican mobile phone users who use T-Mobile may wonder sometimes why their contract and phone fees are so high. Maybe it is because Catherine Zeta-Jones, the on again, off again wife of Michael Douglas, has managed to stitch up a $20 million deal to be the face of the carrier. A lot of chatting and texting will be needed to pay for that connection If it’s not enough that she gets to sleep with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie is also the face and body for French luxury brand Louis Vuitton. The fee is a reported $10 million per year which should keep Ange in top line hand bags and luggage for a few years to come. Call her Mrs. Keith Urban or Nicole Kidman, our Nic is doing very nicely thank you very much from one of her endorsements. As the face of Chanel No. 5, ads which were shot by her good friend Baz Luhrmann, she was paid $12 million per year to drift airily about all the while smelling like a queen. It could be her vegan diet or that sunny disposition but whatever keeps Ellen DeGeneres looking so good it is worth big dollars. As the spokesperson for CoverGirl make-up she was signed on a multiyear, mega million dollar contract. Not bad for a 55 year old woman with a non-mainstream lifestyle. Jessica Simpson could have simply hidden her pimples behind a face full of make-up and got on with her life. Instead she became the spotty face of ProActive Solutions appearing on national TV shows and ads earning herself a multi-million dollar annual paycheck. Scarlett Johansson is blessed with flawless skin, killer curves and timeless beauty. Apart from her work as a celebrated actor, young Scarlett makes mega bucks on the side by promoting the likes of Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Mango and L’Oreal. In the music world Beyoncé makes a fortune from her music and acting but she’s not beyond using her natural beauty and street cred to earn some serious money. Besides having her own fashion line, House of Deréon, Beyoncé has picked up millions by spruiking the
benefits of L’Oreal, Pepsi, Giorgio Armani’s Diamonds fragrance and True Star for Tommy Hilfiger. She is also the face of H&M’s 2013 summer campaign. Much easier than singing for your supper! Having started her working career as a fashion model, posing for advertisements should be a natural fit for dusky beauty Halle Berry. She is the contracted spokesmodel for Revlon, has modelled for Versace and jeweller to the stars Harry Winston and released her own perfume for Coty which is simply titled Halle. So much more than a pretty woman, Julia Roberts, the star of such classics as Notting Hill and Erin Brockovich, puts her down time off set to good use by being the face of Lancôme. For many years she languished in the shadow of fellow Australian and good friend Nicole Kidman but a series of high profile and critically acclaimed roles has meant that Naomi Watts is a good fit for any advertising campaign. Her ethereal beauty was seen as the perfect face for a campaign for Ann Taylor. She also has no excuse for having unwashed hair due to her deal with Pantene and Thierry Mugler makes sure she always smells like a million dollars because of her promotion for Angel perfume. Apart from the mega deals, Twitter has also become an avenue for the elite of the entertainment world to pick up some spare change. Amounts as large as $10,000 have been paid for the stars to wax lyrical about a particular product. Some of the oddest were Snoop Dogg telling his fans to rush out and buy a Toyota Sienna mini-van. Tori Spelling sent out the link to a rental car company to her followers while Khloe Kardashian thought that every one of her Twitter people simply had to buy a pair of Old Navy jeans. Why? They would give you that famous Kardashian butt. However the award for the weirdest celebrity endorsement goes to the advertising agency who thought that Justin Bieber would be the perfect fit for their product. OPI Nail Polish was considered just right for Justin’s fans and the fee was a cool $12.5 million. labelmagazine.com.au

All’s fair in love and...
text wars? Vanessa Hernandez explains how a text is forever because it is treated as evidence in a court of law.
A
colleague of mine recently told me that parties separating should be provided with a Court monitored phone, that way, they would think twice before “sending that text” or “posting that status update”. I laughed but could not entirely disagree with the concept. In this day and age, everything can become evidence. Clients constantly hand me their phones and ask me to “look at this text message!” If you are in this situation, you will know and recognise some (hopefully not all!) of these types of messages: 1. The “baiting message”. The writer sends you something that they know and hope will entice a reaction from you. 2. The “abusive message”. The message that calls you names and puts you down as a husband/wife and/or parent. 3. The “manipulative message”. The message intended to back you into agreeing to something by making you feel you have no other choice. 4. The “threatening message.” The message that makes you fearful of the other party and how they may proceed. 5. The “paranoid message.” The message that accuses you of things you have not done and would not do. The list could go on and on... Most often than not, the client is right to be upset... the content of the message is abusive, mean or hurtful and sometimes, just plain bizarre. And then comes the question, “What do I write back?” The danger here is that each party will enter into a text war, say things they really shouldn’t, and that the string of text messages exchanged will then be provided to a Judge at some later stage. And
if you thought text messages were bad; don’t get me started on status updates and comments on social media. It is never ending. So how do I answer my client’s question as to what they should write back? I normally reply with, “Nothing. Write nothing back unless you absolutely have to.” In fact, my standard advice is simple and goes along the lines of, “If you would not be comfortable to have this email/text message/electronic post/conversation (etc) read out by someone to a Judge making decisions in your matter, then don’t write it/send it/say it/do it!” Often, what people don’t realise is that in that moment they hit the “send” button during a heated exchange, they are creating evidence. If the other party wants to do that, let them! But be mindful of your conduct particularly where children are involved and respond to only the necessary matters. If you are involved in a high conflict separation or think your matter might become one, call us now. We offer a FREE half hour, confidential discussion in which we can discuss and provide you with solutions to assist you with your matter. You don’t need to go through the separation process on your own and certainly, you don’t need to stress when a simple phone call can bring you peace of mind. At OMB solicitors, we make it our priority to understand your unique circumstances, provide you with solutions and work with you to resolve your matter in a simple and timely manner.
