Watching Reese Witherspoon’s cinematic evolution from her Tracy Flick to her Madeline Mackenzie has cemented her status as our golden girl. With every new release, her audiences can’t shake the anticipation of where her ever-evolving talents will take her characters next. Label relives five fan favourites starring the stage darling.
RADIANT
REESE Big Little Lies
If you are yet to watch BLL, please cancel your meetings for the next week, go home, put on your tracksuit and get ready for the most epic tale of friendship, love and loss (potentially) of all time. Reese plays the role of Madeline Martha Mackenzie. Everyone knows a Madeline. She’s all sass, a loyal friend and tends to know everything about everyone. She’s explosive, protective and doesn’t let a bad attitude slide by without addressing it with wit and tenacity. Stay tuned for Big Little Lies’ return to our screens with season two.
Legally Blonde
Elle Woods is the hero of every girl who has been doubted by her peers, partner and teachers. And if you haven’t seen it, please follow the directions stated above, and maybe add it a pizza order because there’s a sequel. Reese pours her internal fire into Elle, who has just been dumped by her presumed fiancéto-be and takes revenge by getting herself into law school alongside him and his latest love. By embracing the power of her femininity, which she has been penalised for previously, Elle doesn’t compete with the boys by playing on their level. She uses every tool in her Barbie-blonde arsenal for success in the court room.
Election
It’s arguable that Tracy Flick has been hiding inside Reese since this iconic film aired in the late nineties. An adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s book of the same title, Tracy is all about ambition in her high school student body president election. Ruthless in her tactics, Tracy resorts to bad sportsmanship to get the job done and eventually dodges punishment and wins her dream role. With her resume polished, Tracy goes to Georgetown University and later lands a role alongside a republican congressman. Despite Tracy’s misfit nature, she harnesses more power in her 1.56m frame than a missile. We think.

Mud
When we heard a movie titled Mud would star Matthew McConaughey, we were all ears (and eyes). A man on the run, Matthew’s character hides on an island in the Mississippi River from bounty hunters who want revenge for a murder he committed in Texas. But all Mud wants is Juniper, the love of his life, played by our girl Reese. Swoon. The man Mud murdered impregnated Juniper and later pushed her down a flight of stairs. A grittier role than we are used to from Reese, Juniper is a down-trodden woman with nightingales tattooed on her hands; she is that little bird with a broken wing looking for her freedom.
Hot Pursuit
Reese transforms herself into Rose Cooper to star opposite Sofia Vergara in this cop comedy. Having grown up with Reese being the bombshell, Rose is her aesthetic alter-ego. Think a lowslung ponytail, orthopedic shoes and a mental complex bestowed upon her by her deceased father’s success on the force. Taking every hilarious insult from Sofia’s character Daniella in her stride, the pair form an unlikely partnership and defeat the bad guy. Rose taught us that no matter how short you are, or how big the shoes left for you are to fill, you can achieve anything with the right amount of confidence.

B EHIN D T H E B R A N D
Sun-safe and sexy: Label goes behind the seams with founder Carly Brown to see how the world’s most flattering swimwear is created.
1
What was your industry background before launching UNE PIECE? I was the Senior Marketing Manager for UBER in Australia. Before that I lived in London and was the Head of Brand Marketing for REVLON for the UK and Europe.
2
What market gap led you to establishing the brand? The idea of a ‘One Piece’ swimwear label came from the time I spent living and working in the UK during my twenties. In Europe, women don’t just exclusively wear bikinis - they have a repertoire of swimwear they take on holidays - which almost always includes at least one staple one-piece. When I started designing the range, I talked to so many Australian women about what they wanted in a one piece. Overwhelmingly they said they wanted something that made them feel confident, and in turn, beautiful. One theme that kept coming up was the issue of the Australian sun and how so many women (smart women) are wearing rash vests, which they thought were daggy and unflattering. So I took that as a challenge to see if I could create something truly beautiful in a one piece - and voila the Original Sexie Rashie was born.
3
Tell us about your latest collection. What themes can we expect? The Cap d’Ail Collection is named after Cap d’Ail on the French Riviera, and inspires visions of long languid days by the water with friends, enjoying fresh seafood and crisp white wine. The pieces are created with long lines, careful contouring and elegant twists to cinch in all the right places - designed to take you effortlessly
18
from day to night by teaming them with your favourite palazzo pants, kaftan or flowing skirt.
4
How do you engineer the world’s most flattering swimwear? Our products have been really carefully crafted and tested with many women. Our launch product, The Original Sexie Rashie has been through over 11 rounds of samples to get us to the product it is today. It also has 28 pieces (rashies often have six) to be fully contoured and the best Italian SPF 50+fabric on the market. I researched and researched and researched until I got the perfect fit. I didn’t compromise.
5
What are the most flattering patterns and prints for different bodies? I love a strong base colour with a print that isn’t too busy or too small. I loved creating our prints for the collection and addressing this exact challenge (making it look beautiful on the body as well as nailing the trend). Our stunning Botanical Floral Print was hand-illustrated bespoke for us.
6
How has Une Piece been received globally? We’ve been thrilled with the way UNE PIECE has been received! Given we are an onlineonly brand, we have been overwhelmed to see sales in 39 countries to date. I think the positive reaction can largely be put down to two things: Firstly - the product is very special. When women slip on an UNE PIECE it makes them feel confident and empowered. They feel beautiful when they wear it. Only someone that owns an UNE PIECE LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
understands quite how transformative it is when all you’ve owned before was a daggy rashie! Secondly - I think the brand really resonates with women. We are a brand that celebrates women and their passions. We have a beautiful, clean and chic aesthetic but we are inclusive and I am actively supporting diversity of beauty at every touchpoint. We created a campaign and hashtag #unepiecewomen, which brings this to life.
7
What are your goals for 2018 as a brand? We have so many exciting things to come; beautiful new products, a stunning new campaign and global expansion plans.
8
Where do you go for inspiration? I find inspiration daily; in nature, at the beach, when I travel. I also find inspiration when talking to women. I read every single customer service email and comment on social media and so I’m constantly listening to what the customer wants and needs. Finally, celebrations (birthdays, holidays, Christmas) all provide me with so much creativity, conversation and inspiration.
9
What’s your favourite piece from the latest collection and where is your favourite beach to take it? Ohhh…. in the latest collection probably the Botanical Floral Twist Sexie Rashie however I can’t go past a classic black in the Original Sexie Rashie! UNE PIECE is available online at www.unepiece.com
WRAPPED UP IN
dog&boy Label unravels the story behind the beloved scarf brand with founder Sonya Michele.
5
1
What led you to establishing dog&boy? The idea for dog&boy was literally born one fine spring day in the dog park. I have always been a scarf lover, it’s my ‘thing’, and I was telling a friend this day I couldn’t find anything I loved. She made the throw away comment, ‘Well make your own!’. I had never intended to start my own business and I am not formally trained in fashion design, but call it the planets aligning, or simply serendipity, here we are!
2
Tell us about your work with Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. Why is this cause so meaningful to you? Oprah Winfrey once said, ‘To move forward, you have to give back’, and at dog&boy, we take social responsibility as seriously as we take scarves, and giving back is a big part of our brand philosophy. When I started dog&boy, I knew I wanted to align with a cause – I just didn’t know what. In 2015, I lost my mum to brain cancer. It happened just before a planned mid-year launch for dog&boy. She was diagnosed Easter Sunday and died a month later. Survival rate from brain cancer is less than 1%, and it kills more children in Australia each year than any other disease, yet it is least funded for research than any other cancer. So when we lost mum, it made the decision to align with the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation an easy one.
3
How have your mother’s sketches influenced your aesthetic? After mum died, I found out she was actually a frustrated sketch artist, and a pretty good one. She had sketch book after sketch book of mostly botanical drawings and muses – a reflection of her love of the simple beauty of the things she loved and in everything she saw around her each and every day. It was that simplicity that spoke to me. How often do we think about or are flooded with curated images and stories about getting away to some destination where all things are beautiful? But what about the everyday beauty all around us? It is this simple everyday beauty on which I base the designs for dog&boy.
4
From sketch to sale, what is the process of creating a dog&boy scarf? I am often asked about the inspiration behind dog&boy scarves but believe it or not, it’s a tough one to answer. Most people think the magic of design inspiration comes from a life-changing moment or a light bulb idea. Sometimes it does, but more often than not, designs are inspired by the smallest of details each day. I will usually sketch out a concept and consider the colourway and my graphic designer will pull it all together for print. Every collection is different and each design produced in limited numbers so you’re always assured of something new, exclusive and different each season. LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
Why should we be investing in this versatile accessory? We live in a world where ideally, every purchase should have more than one function, that’s why scarves are the accessory ‘du jour’ in convertible fashion. dog&boy scarves are trans-seasonal, designed to be worn year round, not just the typical practical cold weather accessory. The fabrics we use are pure natural fibres in silk, cotton and wool, so they breathe on the skin and are easy care. They are the perfect companion no matter where or what your journey.
6
What styles are on trend for Autumn 2018? There is a shift from the traditional seasonal colours of black or grey or navy, and an embracing of muted tones in rich burgundies, soft blushes, deep greens and earthy terracotta tones together with a trend toward texture rather than an all-over print.
7
Who would you like to see most in one of your magnificent pieces? Oh, only one gorgeous lady?! It would be someone with a natural style and elegance. Someone like Jessica Alba or Blake Lively, or the gorgeous Lisa Wilkinson, and I Iove the boho-luxe style of Nina Proudman (Asher Keddie) from Offspring.
8
What is your biggest dream for your brand? We just turned two years old and already it feels like a lifetime ago since we started! So, along with seeing one, or all of the lovely ladies noted above wearing our designs, the dream, that ‘yes! fist-pump’ moment, would be our designs stocked in the exquisite US lifestyle store, Anthropologie. They are synonymous with stunning, exclusive product offerings for the creative-minded woman, who wants to look like herself, not the masses. So watch this space!

LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
GROOM YOUR GUY Label takes a pre-launch peek at HESO Men’s Grooming with Aaron and Phoebe. 1. How is HESO changing the grooming game for men? We’ve created simple, affordable, natural and gentle grooming products which help protect their skin and help the ocean at the same time. As a bonus, our products have been especially formulated to be incredibly gentle on sensitive skin.
2. Tell us about your products. How did you come up with this program? The products are the 3 staples of nearly every man. Shave cream, after shave and moisturiser. The products are all being designed to have maximum effect without being harsh to your skin or the planet (and without overcomplicating the routine – we like to keep it simple). We’ve been making women’s skincare for a long time now, and finally we’re switching our focus to a men’s range and these products are our best yet.
but Australian native extracts are going to be playing a starring role.
3. Why was being all natural important to you? What are your star ingredients? Natural is important so that we can minimise our toxic exposure. Nature gives us the answer for many issues if we take the time to look and don’t take easy or cheap shortcuts. The formulas for HESO are still being finalised
5. Why was being vegan and cruelty-free important to you? Because it is kinder to the planet. Animals are not required to make us look good. We believe that with all the technological advances the cosmetics industry has seen that animal testing is unnecessary and cruel, and we’d like to see it (and any products that have been tested on animals) banned. Unfortunately that probably won’t happen in the near future, but we’ll keep on spreading the message.
4. How does your marketing strategy differ to the average skincare brand? We are all about high quality products but also have a message about protecting our oceans. Through the simple daily task of having to shave you can have an impact on our oceans. HESO uses minimal plastics and donates a portion of our sales to marine conservation so that we can start cleaning up our oceans.

THE
ROMPER REVAMP
Label meets Romp Squad founders Filip Odzak and Tully Challen to talk this year’s must-have wardrobe item for men.
1
What was your first encounter with a male romper and how did it make you feel? Filip: I have been a fan of the "one-piece" for a very long time. My personal wardrobe consists of many overalls, dungarees etc so jumping into a romper was blissfully comfortable for me.
2
Why is it important for men to have access to this garment? Tully: Although it’s barely new (rompers had a huge rise in the 1970's), it is fresh, fun and an exciting area of men's fashion. It's great that guys get to play with something new again.
3
What inspired your vibrant patterns and how do you select your fabrics? Filip: Rompers are quite outlandish - the print needs to convey that. It's festival wear that you throw on with your mates. So while sourcing and designing the prints, we opted for some in different colour-ways you could match up with a friend. We kept the colours fresh, the prints Summery and tropical, and all 100% cotton because everything else on the market is overpriced and synthetic.
4
What can we expect to see from Romp Squad in 2018? Tully: The ranges will expand. Our shirting launches in February, and it will evolve from there. Romp Squad is all about good times, great feels.
5
If you could get any five men into the Romp Squad, who would you pick? Tully: Well these three pioneered it: Steve McQueen, James Deane and Roger Moore. Filip: Patrick Stewart coz we already know Capt. Picard looked good in a one-piece starfleet uniform. Can I get a 2 for 1 if I say Stenmark twins?

G I VEAWAY S
REVOLUTION Label chats with founder Marvin Osifo of Face Fashion about providing a platform for emerging designers, his motivation and the fresh talent you’ll find at this year’s event.
1
Tell us about where you grew up in West Africa. How is fashion deeply connected to the culture? I realised I loved fashion from a very young age. I was born and raised in Nigeria, in West Africa. My upbringing cultivated within me, a great interest in beautiful fabrics, the use of colour and having pride in personal style. Growing up, I was surrounded by a culture that was always adorned in amazing outfits which were all custom designed and made. I’m sure this is where my love of colour and dressing came from. The women would purchase yards of fabric from the market to sew into the latest styles for their families to wear and show off. Having this affinity for fashion and textiles deeply engrained in my being, I migrated to Australia in 1992.
2
What is your background in the fashion industry? After studying business management, marketing and event management, I began my career in fashion retail, working for brands such as BALLY, Emporio Armani and David Jones. I have now been involved in the fashion space for over 12 years, with the last decade focusing on Face Fashion events. These experiences perfectly aligned me to gain an understanding of all aspects of the fashion industry. The skills I gained along the way, along with my passion for the industry, lead to the development of Face Fashion.
3
How did you transition from retail to events? I was very fortunate that it was a natural progression. I made so many contacts in my earlier years, from designers to models to key media people. They all really supported and encouraged what I set out to do, which to this day I’m so grateful for. My very first event was at the ShangriLa hotel in Sydney, with Microsoft and Toni & Guy as my key sponsors. The turnout blew me away and that’s when I knew I was on the right path.
4
What market gap led you to establishing Face Fashion? I noticed a real struggle amongst so many young emerging designers I knew. They could simply not afford to take part in the mainstream fashion shows. Most were doing jobs on the side to make ends meet between putting their collection together, so unless they got themselves into significant debt, they were basically invisible to the people that needed to find them. This huge gap between young designers and potential buyers was disheartening, so I had an idea to make my positive contribution towards the industry I loved, by creating a platform specifically for emerging talent to be seen by the right people, without the deep financial burden.
5
How does Face Fashion support emerging designers and how do buyers benefit from attending? Face Fashion provides a platform for our up and coming talent, to showcase their collections on the runway in front of media, buyers, key influencers and consumers. Prior to the actual events, which usually consist of a media launch followed by two evenings of runway shows, Face Fashion provides advice and general support to the designers in preparation. Buyers benefit by getting an exclusive opportunity to see and meet the latest, freshest talent that Australia has to offer, before they’ve had a chance to be snapped up on a larger scene. The question is, how can we expect to have a thriving future of Australian fashion, if we don’t do everything we can to nurture and provide stepping-stones for our next generation of designers?
6
Why is creating these opportunities so important to you? There’s a very special moment when I catch a glimpse of the look on my designers’ faces, when they see their collection on the runway. Being able to give someone the gift of opportunity is priceless to me. They put blood, sweat and tears into these pieces; to see their dreams being realised make me so proud of what Face Fashion is doing.

Which designers will be featured at your upcoming event? We have an incredible line-up in the works this year! Designers such as Skylark, Marion Bleu, Ivona Skelo, Icelynne Yeo, Lowe The Label, Dark Thorn Clothing and ZRD by Ruby Zhang will be featuring; with plenty more applications still to review. This will be our second Melbourne show! Tickets are now available for purchase online via Sticky Tickets, so we encourage everyone to get in early to avoid disappointment.
8
What star qualities do you look for in an emerging designer? Passion, dedication, professionalism, individuality and a tenacity to stay focused until they break through and make a name for themselves. If every designer gave up when they had a set back or received criticism, we wouldn’t have any left!
9
What do you believe is Australia’s future in the global fashion market? Australian fashion has already established a positive reputation on the international scene. If we can stay true to what Australian fashion represents, rather than copying what Europe is doing for example, then the global market will always want a piece of us and we can continue to make our mark in everything from eveningwear to swimwear.
10
What can we expect to see on the horizon for Face Fashion? We have some very special plans in the works, which includes us taking the show to other cities! We’d also love to take this opportunity to call on any businesses, organisations and brands who would like to get involved in supporting us, so we can help even more home-grown talent be seen and celebrated!
Face Fashion is unveiled at Malvern Town Hall from April 3-5. Get your tickets at www.facefashion.com.au

BEAUT Y
Moroccan
MAGIC Myriam, the founder of Akhal Beauty, explains how her product not only perfects complexions, but also assists in restoring ancient Moroccan forests, supports indigenous communities and gives girls in rural villages better access to education.
1
What inspired you to establish Akhal Beauty? The short answer is the precarious state in which I have found the Argan Forest and the people living in it during a trip to Morocco. The Argan Forest is an incredible natural ecosystem that supports an entire indigenous community in the South of Morocco. During a visit in 2016, I was shocked to find the forest polluted with plastic bags and with so many dead trees. It looked nothing like the dense and healthy forest I had seen as a kid growing up in Morocco. I spoke to nearby villagers to enquire about this situation and was confronted by another stark image, that of a family crammed into the same room without electricity and with outside toilets. Those villagers were Argan harvesters and yet it seemed their living conditions did not match up to the success of Argan oil, which can be found in so many of our personal care and skin care products today, and for which we pay top dollars.
2
What was your first product and how did you turn your inspiration into a reality? Argan Kernel Oil because it is such a fantastic multipurpose skincare product and the source of livelihood for so many indigenous people in Morocco. I wanted to work with independent women-only cooperatives that were just as concerned about protecting the Argan Forest as I was, and that could deliver top notch quality. It was more challenging than I expected to find such a group of women. It took me months of research, many trips and site visits to find
38
our current partners, but I am glad that I was so uncompromising because the group of women we work with are simply incredible. Our process is streamlined and is traceable from the forest to the bottle our customer use.
3
Where do you source your ingredients? All our ingredients are sourced in Morocco’s South. Whilst it is one of the country’s poorest regions, the Southern hinterland has an incredible biome with many healing herbs, plants, and flowers that indigenous Moroccans have used for centuries to treat all kinds of ailments.
4
Tell us about your work with Education For All. How does Akhal help girls get an education? Education for All (EFA) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that was created to address girls’ low school enrolment rates in the High Atlas Mountains region of Morocco. Primary schooling is free and compulsory in Morocco, however attendance levels can be low in rural areas and the disparity between boys and girls is staggering. What EFA discovered was that the schools, despite being free, were too far from the villages and parents were simply not comfortable letting their young girls walk or take a bus to the school alone as that was unsafe. EFA’s answer to this problem was to create safe and supervised girls-only dormitories next to the schools where up to 200 girls are given free lodging and
LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
boarding. This eliminated all friction points parents from those villages might have had in allowing their daughters to finish their education. The program that EFA has established is thriving and the organisation has had many success stories. EFA relies solely on donations to cover those expenses so our partnership is with them where we donate a portion of each sale to help them cover the expenses of running the dormitories help a little.
5
What key skincare products should we include in our routine as we enter autumn? Autumn brings cool air and cold winds. We often move back and forth between a warm indoor environment and the cooler outdoors causing a bit of a shock to the outer layer of our skin. These weather factors can lead to a depleted lipid barrier commonly called skin dryness. Oils rich in essential fatty acids are a great skincare product because they help you build that lipid barrier that is under attack by the elements and that helps protect your skin. I prefer dry oils like Argan Kernel Oil and Prickly Pear Seed Oil because they are quickly absorbed and can be used on a standalone basis or as a layering product with your other skincare products or make up. I also recommend investing in a gentle exfoliant because with dry skin comes slough dead skin that you should remove regularly to avoid it clogging up your pores. I recommend Rhassoul Clay which doubles up as a daily polish and deeply cleansing weekly facial mask. Shop Akhal at www.akhal.com
BESPOKE BEAUTY
hop&cotton Born out of a cosmetic scientist’s skin struggle, hop & cotton is a customisable skincare range that combines premium ingredients with a ‘less is more’ approach to perfection problem complexions. Label discusses the science behind our skincare with Founder and Principal Formulator Ee Ting Ng.
4 1
What personal experience encouraged you to create your own skincare products? I never had any problems with my skin until I reached adulthood, where they all started to come at me simultaneously. I had persistent acne, sensitivity, eczema and my skin was also reactive to many ingredients. After years of trying hundreds of different products without avail, I decided to create my own as it was the only way I could have complete control over my products.
2
What steps did you take to go from a home blender to professional production? Having been a scientist all my life, I could not help but to start directly with commercial laboratory-grade equipment as I was unwilling to compromise on quality or risk committing errors in formulation from less ideal equipment.
3
Tell us about your “less is more” approach to skincare. People usually have many different skin concerns that are targeted by different products in the market. This makes it difficult for them to minimise their routine since their ‘treatments’ exist in different products. Since I custom formulate, I am able to designed it such that everything you’d need is delivered through a very streamlined routine of just three steps – a cleanser, exfoliator and a treatment + moisturiser in one.
What process do you take clients through before they buy? Before buying any products, clients are required to complete an online skin test on our website, so that I can understand their skin before formulating their products. Sometimes the client knows exactly what they need and can purchase directly from the shop. But if they tell us that they would like a recommendation, we will evaluate their skin tests, then provide detail and insight into how we would formulate their products to help help them resolve their concerns.
5
What are your favourite ingredients? I love humectants as they are the only ingredients capable of directly increasing our skin’s water content. They are largely underrated as they don’t have much of a ‘story’ (perhaps except hyaluronic acid, but really all humectants do the same job!). Hydration can make the biggest difference. I am also obsessed with non-active ingredients/materials such as thickeners, gelling agents and emulsifiers. They make or break a product by directly contributing to its feel, consistency and texture.

Tell us about your fragrance philosophy? I give clients a choice to include fragrance in some products, but as a norm, I would try to advise against them as fragrances are one of the most common groups of allergens in cosmetics.

never compromise the time with clients. To me, it is important to really listen and understand how to help each and every one of them. This fills a good part of my day. Another big portion is spent on research and keeping up to date with formulation, new ingredients, etc., as I always want to have my clients to receive the best that is available (and of course I really enjoy doing it!). With whatever time I have leftover, I will need to work on other business-related things such as branding, marketing, production, purchasing, etc. Unfortunately, most scientists don't usually have exposure to the business environment, making it a very steep learning curve for me, especially for an industry that is very saturated with many different brands and beliefs. I am, however, very grateful and fortunate to have my co-founders who are more experienced in those areas to help me along.

What can customers expect to experience at your pop up store? They can see how various ingredients look like and experience some of the possibilities in textures and functions that can be created based on individual preferences and needs.

What inspired you to turn your homemade snacks into a business? Originally I started making chocolate at home because I discovered I had a dairy allergy. I was vegetarian at the time and totally addicted to Cadbury Dairy Milk. I found it so hard to stop eating it but I had to because the dairy and the sugar were making me so ill. First of all I tried all the dairy-free and raw chocolate I could find, but most of them tasted very dark and nothing like the taste I was used to and craved. We realised there was a real gap in the market and we decided to start a business, but a business that included all of our values about food, it had to be organic, ethical, out-of-thisworld delicious and cruelty-free! Where did your journey start? My husband Ed and I started The Chocolate Yogi in July 2014. We had just moved back to Australia from the UK, and for six months we had not been able to find work. We were coming to the end of our savings and knew we had to do something different. We decided to attend a seminar called The Prosperity Experience, because we figured we could use some help with prosperity! The seminar was facilitated by multi-millionaire businessman Jeffrey Slayter. He encouraged us to start a business, and when he found out I enjoyed making raw chocolate at home, he suggested we go with that. We are now stocked in over 700 stores nationwide.
42
What are your three core values that guide your business? 1. Be Loving – cacao is about opening the heart, we believe in being loving in every aspect of our business so that our customers, staff and business partners all feel cared for and appreciated. 2. Share Abundance – we believe that it is the responsibility of all businesses to create a better world not just an amazing product, so we share some of our income with charities who are protecting the earth’s resources. 3. Change the World – we believe ethical businesses can and will change the world, we do this by creating ethical, cruelty-free, fairly traded chocolate and contributing to charities and causes that align with our values. How does your chocolate change the world? We donate 10c from every Fun bar to Sea Shepherd Australia, and 5c from every Oscar Orangutan to The Orangutan Project (this is significantly more than 10% of our profit). We also use recycled cardboard packaging with vegetable-based inks, are about to transition to compostable wrappers, use only certified organic fairly-traded ingredients and ensure all of our ingredients are also cruelty-free.
5
What goes into your chocolates? We use really pure, wholefood, organic ingredients such as raw cacao nibs, raw cacao butter, coconut, coconut flour, evaporated coconut nectar (aka coconut sugar), lucuma and vanilla.
LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
Why should we make the switch to vegan chocolate? There are so many reasons! First of all, I would say as well as being vegan or plant-based, make sure your chocolate is certified organic, as cacao is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world and can have high levels of pesticides. Secondly, raw cacao is higher in antioxidants than roasted cocoa, although they are both good sources, so if you can have raw cacao, at least half of the time, that is a good health step. One issue with milk chocolate is that dairy can really block the absorption of these antioxidants, so it is better if you can eat a vegan chocolate for that reason. Where would you like to see your products in five years? I would love to see The Chocolate Yogi bars in schools, on aeroplanes, and in all the great health and independent stores in Australia, as well as in at least three to five countries overseas. We get a lot of requests to bring our chocolate to America, so I would love to see them over there. And I would love for us to have raised over $1 million for charity by then.

RECI P E S
California F ‘ ried’ Chicken Sandwich Serves 4
50g wholemeal flour 200ml buttermilk (or 2 eggs, beaten) 150g puffed rice 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp onion powder or granules 4 tsp paprika 1 tsp dried sage 8 mini chicken breast fillets 4 wholemeal buns 1 ripe avocado, peeled, stoned and sliced ½ iceberg lettuce, shredded sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Mexican hot sauce such as Cholula (optional), to serve FOR THE YOGHURT DRESSING 75ml Greek yoghurt ½ garlic clove, crushed 1 tsp cider vinegar
As a family with four teenage children, we are always looking for healthy ways of preparing not-so-healthy fast food favourites like pizza, burgers and fried chicken. This recipe is brilliant because it looks and tastes like a fried chicken sandwich, with the satisfying crunch from the chicken and the creaminess of the mayo, but is actually made with baked chicken and a yoghurt dressing. The kids love it, we know they’re eating well and everyone’s happy.
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C/gas 4. 2. Put the flour, buttermilk and puffed rice into three shallow bowls. Season the flour with salt and pepper. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and dried sage to the buttermilk and mix well. Crush the puffed rice with your hands so that the pieces are broken down slightly but not powdered. 3. Dip a piece of chicken into the flour so that it is completely covered. Remove
and shake off any excess, then dip into the buttermilk. Allow any excess buttermilk to drip off, then put the chicken pieces into the puffed rice. Turn over to make sure they are completely coated, then place on a baking tray. Repeat with the remaining chicken pieces. 4. Put the tray into the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden and cooked through, turning halfway through cooking. 5. Meanwhile, make the yoghurt dressing; mix together the yoghurt, crushed garlic and vinegar with a little salt and pepper. Taste and add more vinegar if needed. 6. Slice open the buns and divide the avocado slices between them. Top with shredded iceberg lettuce. 7. Once the chicken is cooked, place on top of the lettuce and spoon over dollops of the yoghurt dressing, as well as a drizzle of hot sauce, if desired. Close the buns and serve immediately.

Serves 6
½ tbsp flavourless oil, e.g. groundnut, for frying 2 onions, peeled and finely sliced 2 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp ground turmeric 2 tsp ground cumin 3cm piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and grated 1–2 long red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped, to taste 1 x 400ml tin reduced fat coconut milk 1–2 tbsp tamarind paste or watered-down tamarind block 1 small aubergine, cut into bite-sized pieces 2 carrots, chopped into bite-sized rounds 200g green beans, topped and tailed and cut in half 600g meaty white fish (e.g. cod, pollock, haddock or coley), cut into bite-sized pieces Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper TO SERVE Coconut and Ginger Brown Rice 2 tbsp desiccated coconut, toasted (optional)
Southern Indian Fish Curry This is a lightly spiced, creamy curry with a delicately sweet-and-sour flavour that is popular in the southern regions of India. Serve it with boiled basmati or brown rice for a perfectly balanced pre-exercise meal. Coconut is rich in a certain type of saturated fat which is metabolized more rapidly than that from animal sources – this means that coconut makes a useful energy source for endurance sport and competitions.
METHOD
1. Place a large, shallow saucepan or a high-sided frying pan over a medium heat and add the oil. Once hot, add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt and saute for 8–10 minutes, until completely soft. 2. Add the spices and continue to cook for a further minute or until you can really smell them, then add the
ginger and chillies and stir over the heat for a further minute. 3. Pour in the coconut milk, tamarind paste and 400ml of water (use the empty coconut milk tin to measure the 400ml). Season with salt and pepper, stir well and bring to a simmer. 4. Once the sauce is simmering, add the aubergine and continue to cook for 5 minutes, then add the carrots and simmer for 10–15 minutes, until the carrots and aubergine are tender and the sauce has thickened a little. 5. Add the green beans and cook for a further 3 minutes, then add the fish. Stir well to coat, then cook for 3–4 minutes, until the fish is just cooked through. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. 6. Serve the curry with rice in warmed serving bowls, sprinkled with toasted desiccated coconut, if using.

have to say this was one of the best dining experiences I have had in ages. We were greeted by Deb, one of the Managers at Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill. Deb escorted us to our immaculately set table and enquired after our beverage preferences. Implementing her extensive knowledge of the wine list, Deb explained the best options for our taste buds and recommended Vanessa (one of
my guests) sample the house wine - she couldn’t believe how pleasant a house wine could be. I enjoyed a glass of the Opawa Sauvignon Blanc, while Christine sipped on a chilled glass of Moët. As we were a party of three (Vanessa, Christine and I), we decided to share a few plates. Deb took us through the menu and assisted us in curating a collection of four entrees which were:

THE WINE BAR + GRILL Words: Kate Bennett
BangBangDuck (image 4) + ChoppedSalad (image 2). A fabulous dish of theatre, Deb brought it to the table and assembled it front of us. The duck leg was elegantly cut and added to the salad along with a delectably spicy sauce. Kobe Rump Cap (image 3), Pickled Daikon, Black Sesame + Cabbages, + Umeboshi Mayonnaise. A scorchinghot stone arrived at our table, delivered alongside the finely-sliced succulent rump which Nicky (image 3) seared and served to Vanessa and Christine. Nicky’s expert knowledge encouraged my guests to mix the meat with the three small sides. As I’m not a meat eater, I watched
the girls savour every perfect mouthful of the fresh and well-thought assembly of flavours. Zucchini Flowers, Three Cheese’s, Tomato + Saffron. These were melt-inyour-mouth delicious! Shanghai Style Calamari, Chilli, Ginger Caramel, Sprouts + Sorrel (image 5). Coated in an ultra-light batter, the calamari was absolutely yummy and not at all oily. I must say we were so satisfied from sharing these plates, but we continued to order mains to share to fully encompass the amazing menu that Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill have to offer. Valencia Pork Belly 250g, Black Garlic, Parsnip + Stilton, Celeriac + Truffle Glaze (image 1). This dish was so decadent - slightly fatty but an excellent representation of pork belly nonetheless. F1 Wagyu Rump Cap 300 grams (image 6). Another brilliant beef dish for Vanessa and Christine! Tender, juicy and full of flavour, this wagyu was the ultimate indulgence. Fortunately for my beautiful dog Bond, a piece was left over so I took it home for his dinner. Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill has his woof of approval. Sides: Wild Rocket, Pear, Buffalo Ricotta + Fig Reduction GF. This was one of my favourite salads of all time. Tempura Onion Rings + Ranch Dressing (image 7). Scrumptious minus the typical greasiness one can expect with this indulgent snack. Oven Baked Creamed Potatoes + Chipotle Butter GF. I just love a good mash and this is probably the best the Gold Coast has to offer.

How would you best describe your brand aesthetic? It might not sound sexy but adaptability reigns supreme in our brand aesthetic. To be part of the collection, a product needs to be sophisticated yet youthful, playful yet considered and adaptable for the market. It must offer clients the ability to choose their preferred colour, finish and dimensions along with a leather or fabric of their liking for all upholstered products. It must also be able to able to wear many hats functionally. A product not only has to communicate its own special story, it needs to be able to strike up a conversation with the ’relatives’.
2
What inspired you to create Something Beginning With? Lisa: Working in the furniture industry, I always knew that one day I would take the risk of launching a fresh and eclectic collection of products tailored towards the A&D market. I wasn’t sure how this would occur, or with whom I would take this journey. SBW was launched to the market in 2011. It’s a Melbourne-based furniture brand and design studio which strives to unify the functional with the visually captivating, creating a strong, beautifully balanced and playful product blend that can be adapted and translated into an array of environments.
3
Lisa and Laelie, tell us about your backgrounds in design. Lisa: I graduated Industrial Design at RMIT in 2003 and have been in the design and manufacturing industry since. I have worked in both furniture design, manufacturing and sales, as well as Point of Sale and exhibition design. I have always had my hand in a creative field and my interest has always been in furniture and homewares. Post graduating I have worked with homewares giant Alessi, and have designed two products for them. Laelie: My background is in Interior Design. I’ve worked in the furniture industry within Australia and abroad. I’m also an artist and have visual arts studio based in Collingwood, Melbourne.
4
What services does SBW offer? Something Beginning With is a furniture design studio. We design and manufacture in Melbourne and create products for residential and commercial projects. Our range includes chairs, stools, sofas, tables, ottomans and more.
5
How do you balance comfort and form in sofa design? There is a fine line between creating a comfortable sofa without compromising on its visual aesthetic. It is a balance between seat depth and back height as well as foam density. Get the balance right and you end up with a beautifully appealing and wonderfully soft sofa.
6
What have been your favourite commercial projects to work on so far? Our most recent and one of our favourites was the DJs head offices in Richmond. We were commissioned to produce all of the collaborative tables throughout the two
LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
level office. A whopping 105 items were produced. It was a fantastic opportunity for SBW to shine as the majority of items were customised, all locally manufactured.
7
What are your favourite decades of design? By far our favourite design decade is the 50s. With design greats, such as Arne Jacobsen, Harry Bertoia and Charles and Ray Eames paving the way, what is not to love? We feel like a true indication of a significant and successful era is determined by whether the product of that time translates into our lives today. We feel that this is the case with designs produced in this decade. As designers, we hope that what we design today can be appreciated by future generations in the same way.
8
Where do you go for inspiration? Our inspiration is drawn from a mosaic of rich and diverse influences. We both have a love affair with design & architecture, fashion and textiles. The arts and nature have also played an integral role in forming and enriching our style.
9
How do you spend your days off? Our days off are an opportunity to disconnect from work and relax. A time to spend time with our loved ones, partake in our other passions. Although, when you run your own business it does not always happen, it is important to switch off as much as possible, so when we do re-engage you are re-energised.
10
What trends will we see emerging in 2018? As Millennial Pinks and Metallics are on their way out, we feel that ‘earthen luxury’ will be on its way in. Reconnecting in more authentic ways with nature through a pigmented, soft and tactile take on neutrals. As our lives become more hectic and reliant on technology, our desire to reconnect with nature and return to a simpler way of life will be reflected in the design and style of our homes. Organic materials and traditional handcrafts will continue to gain momentum. Tinted darks are also definitely here to stay, either with daring darks or by experimenting with energetic and vibrant hues that move from feature accents to feature surfaces and rooms.

Milestone A journey from being overweight to the Gold Coast Marathon – brave bariatric patients conquer the Gold Coast Marathon 21km, 10km and 5.7km races.
A
t her heaviest, Michelle Morrison struggled to walk from her front door to her letter box. Now she is posting personal best times after completing the 5.7km run as part of the 2017 Gold Coast Marathon. It has been a long road emotionally and physically, but Michelle finally feels that she has her life back after her life-changing weight-loss surgery. “To not being able to walk from the front door to my letter box, to now being able to walk nearly 6km in an hour is amazing,” Michelle said. “It gives you an amazing feeling and if you haven’t done it, haven’t thought about it, do it!” Michelle, who has shed 62.5kg since the beginning of her weight-loss journey, said she couldn’t have done it without the support of WeightLoss Solutions Australia (WLSA). The company is based in Varsity Lakes, offering surgical and non-surgical weight-loss solutions, including Lap Band, Gastric Sleeve and Orbera Balloon procedures. Michelle Morrison, one of WLSA’s many success stories, said joining WLSA was the “best thing I’ve ever done”. “I know I may not be the fastest or win the race, but I win no matter what. I’m healthier and happier than I’ve ever been in my entire life,” she said. “WLSA have been amazing, as well as very supportive. With every struggle you might have or every doubt you have, you can just pick up the phone and someone’s there to help you through it.”
66
Felicity Cohen, WLSA’s CEO, aims to help more Australians achieve a healthy and happy life through understanding the benefits of a comprehensive bariatric weight-loss solution. She has been developing a unique Lifestyle Modification program since 2000. Felicity, a weight-loss pioneer, enjoys the professional and personal ‘high’ she gains from sharing the journey with her patients. Felicity ensured she was with her warriors every step of the way during the Gold Coast Marathon. The dedicated weight-loss boss ran the 21km half marathon with WLSA patient Nancy Abolins, marking Nancy’s biggest ever achievement. Nancy said she was overwhelmed by the experience and was touched by other runners’ reasons for participating. “What really struck me was that everyone who was out there has a story,” she said. “At the 7km mark a lady passed me and she had a sign on her back that said she was dedicating her run to her son who passed away. There was a group of half a dozen and it really touched me at that moment and I just started crying. If I can impart anything onto my children, it would be to live the best life they can live, be healthy and active, and inspire others.”
LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
WLSA prepared #TeamWLSA with a 12-week training program created by Therese Fossheim from Physiologic. Felicity said that although elite athletes were inspirational and exciting, the most satisfying thing about the Gold Coast Marathon was seeing what her group achieved to get to the start line. “Participation is the key when it comes to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle,” Felicity said. “As a part of my vision for WLSA, I really want to see patients get actively involved in sport and movement at some level. We all know that this will set patients up for a healthier, longer and more independent future.” #TeamWLSA 10km Challenger Angie Presecan said WLSA’s Lifestyle Modification program has made a profound difference to her quality of life and that of her family. “Netflix is not the most important thing in my life anymore,” Angie said. “It’s the best thing I ever did. I will never regret that decision for as long as I live. I have a little girl and I didn’t want her to have the same issues with weight that I did because I was leading a bad example.” Proud WLSA member Richard Smedley conquered the 5.7km and is fast approaching his goal weight of under 100kg. “To everyone out there - give it a go, you’ve

got nothing to lose,” he said. “You’ve got plenty of time to prepare and train for it. Felicity and the team at WLSA organised to have a professional group come in and assist and train us.” “They look at how we walk and our technique, then modify it to suit our individual needs and our bodies. It was fantastic.” WeightLoss Solutions Australia’s #WeightLossWarriors have said, “NO to obesity”#nObesity and are taking the challenge again in 2018 to say #YesYouCan. They want to show others who are still trying to regain a new lease on life that sustainable weight-loss is achievable. With expertise and support from WLSA’s team of medical experts that provide comprehensive guidance pre- and post-bariatric procedure, along with an amazing WLSA community, goals like participating in the Gold Coast Marathon are now within reach. Fellow WLSA WeightLoss Warrior, Adam Bilsy, supported #TeamWLSA teammates from the sidelines. “You can tell it’s very emotional for them,” he said. “I’m massively proud of everyone who goes through the journey to finish the marathon. I was very happy for them and hopefully it will be me one day.” Adam praised the team at WLSA. “I did the shakes to prepare for surgery and now after
the operation I’m sitting at 160kg,” he said. “I’ve already lost 20kg in less than a month. They (WLSA and Felicity Cohen) were perfect from day one. They give you everything. The support is good. They’re not just a surgeon looking for the next quick operation. I want to be proof that it’s good for you and it works.” New Warrior Tabatha Young wants to run with #TeamWLSA this year, having already lost 28kg after Gastric Sleeve surgery. “It’s a new lease on life,” Tabatha said. “I’m more active. My daughter and I do marathons. Just to be able to move freely is just fabulous.” “My biggest goal is to hopefully run the Gold Coast Marathon with the team. With the support of the team, sharing those goals with each other, patients become like an extended family support team on the Facebook page. Without that it would have made the journey hard.” Madonna Barnes, another one of WLSA’s warriors, was diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea and spending her nights attached to a machine was unacceptable to her.
LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
“After discussing with my doctor some different options, she recommended me to WeightLoss Solutions Australia,” Madonna said. “I had my surgery in January 2016 and I’ve lost 45kg. My life doesn’t centre around food like it used to. I’m more active. I really would like to do the marathon next year. I want to do at least the 10km.” In preparation, Madonna has attended all the WLSA pop-up kitchens and loved them. “The best thing about being part of the WLSA community is the support that’s given, particularly in the first 12 months. If I had any issues at all, all I had to do was make a phone call.”
The #YesYouCan movement will launch this winter and WLSA are on the lookout for more recruits. Become a #WeightLossWarrior to join #TeamWLSA. Your journey starts at www.wlsa.com.au

BOOKS
BEHIND THE BOOK Label quizzes sexologist Dr Nikki Goldstein about her hit Single But Dating and relationships in 2018.
Congratulations on your book Single But Dating. Writing a book is no small feat; what motivated its creation? The book originally was published in 2016 but continues to surprise people because it is different and more real in relation to our dating landscape. I wrote the book because I felt that there wasn’t great advice out there for the modern woman that was updated and relevant. I was so tired of advice telling me how to trap a man and get married. I wanted real advice for what I like to call being in the single but dating world. When you are dating today you are forced to declare that you are single yet there is no lack of fun or people in your life and looks of pity should not be given. Tell us about your research process for Single But Dating. What was the biggest challenge you encountered writing this book? The fact that I was given 10 weeks to write it. The research process was easy as I was in a position where I could reflect on the past few years of my life and combine my experiences with my professional expertise. The most difficult part was writing it so quickly after thinking and planning for so long. But I love a challenge and just like the dating world can be a challenge so too can the professional one. But a challenge only makes you stronger and wiser. What damaging behaviours do you observe most from singles on social media? I find people are either too quick to dismiss people or chase those that are ‘kinda not that into them’ (I use the term ‘kinda
72
What is the first step couples should take towards fixing their issues? The first step is admitting that there are issues to fix and being okay with it. Sometimes the first step is just awareness. It doesn’t mean that things are over or that you should be ashamed of anything but getting that weight off your shoulders and admitting that you need help or need to work on things can be the most beneficial thing in the long run. The answers might not come over night and they might not even come at all but being aware of what’s going on can be a step in the right direction.
not that into you’ instead of not that into you in the book as there is a confusing difference) but it’s the ego and sense of self-worth that sees them go running. To date successfully in the modern era, it’s a balance between being open to people you didn’t first think were your “type” but also standing up for yourself when respect isn’t being given. But there is a fine line where you think you are standing up for yourself but you are rejecting potential great matches due to being too fussy. Where that fine line is difficult to tell. Where do you see couples needing the most help these days? Couples just need more help in general. We have this terrible formula going on at the moment. Life feel’s busier, full of more stress and then we have more pressure to be perfect. It could be a bit of social media giving us that false projection of what is now ‘normal’ or that we are now expected to do it all, but I’m not surprised more couples are struggling. I just wish we were all more honest and open about what a real relationship is these days. That’s what we need, not more fluffy photos on Instagram.
LABEL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2018
If you could encourage couples to be more open to one thing, what would it be? Being vulnerable. It can feel awkward to be vulnerable and open with any frustrations, anger and even sadness towards each other. We have this pressure to be perfect that we are scared to let imperfections in. But it’s those moments of being imperfect where a couple can be vulnerable and grow together. When you can overcome these tough moments in your relationship, it can increase intimacy and have a flow on effect into the bedroom. What legacy would you like to leave on the field of sexology? I want people to see that they can do it their own way and don’t have to fit into a mould in their personal and professional lives. Talking about sex for a living is not always a simple job but it’s important you find your own way and your tribe in doing so. Working in the media, people will try and mould you and make you be someone you are not because they are so fearful of the subject of sex. But as the years go on, I get more and more brave to be the sexologist I want to be and organically who I am. I do my best work when I’m passionate about a topic and I tackle it in a way that feels natural for me. I feel like people should do the same whether they are a sexologist or not.

LEGAL
DISCLOSING BANK ACCOUNTS TO YOUR EX A
s a family lawyer, one of the most difficult tasks I continue to encounter is explaining to clients, and ensuring that they comply with, their obligations to make full and frank disclosure of all relevant financial documents in a family law property settlement.
the property settlement orders are made, not on the property and bank balances that existed at the time of separation. The duty of disclosure is ongoing right through to the conclusion of the property settlement and the making of the property settlement orders.
When spouses or defacto couples separate and have reached an agreement, or are attempting to reach an agreement as to how their property will be distributed between them, the Family Law Rules require both parties to make full and frank disclosure of all relevant financial documents. This includes all bank accounts, and often bank transaction histories for the last 12 months.
In a recent decision of the Family Court, the wife failed to disclose all of her relevant bank statements. She had sources of funds which were not disclosed, and the origin and the amount of those funds were unknown. She also failed to disclose the value of property that she owned in China.
It is not easy to accept that you need to provide copies of your bank statements since separation to your ex-partner, so they can have a good read of what you have been spending your money on, and how much you have saved since separation. Property settlement adjustments are based on figures in bank accounts and other property that exist at the time that
The Judge was in a difficult position in assessing what the parties future needs were following separation, because of the wife’s failure to comply with her duty to disclose. In assessing a property settlement adjustment, the Judge took into account the wife’s non-disclosure. The Judge said that if an adjustment were to be made, it would be in favour of the husband. The Court also dismissed the wife’s application for spousal maintenance to be paid to her by the husband, because she appeared to have funds available
to her that she had not disclosed. If the wife had provided full disclosure of all of her accounts, and those accounts demonstrated that she did not have the extent of funds that she appeared to have hidden from the husband, she may have been successful in the spousal maintenance application. This case reinforces the importance of providing full and frank disclosure in a property settlement, as hard to swallow as that may be. It is also important to finalise your property settlement as soon as possible after separation. If you leave it go for a year or so you may find yourself in a significantly better financial position, compared with your financial position at separation. You might have even won the lotto or received an inheritance. Such a lotto win or inheritance windfall will form part of the current property available for distribution between you and your expartner, unless the property settlement has already been finalised by way of a consent order or financial agreement. — Gary Mallett, Associate & Family Lawyer

Evoke elegance and influence with the Porsche
718 CAYMAN Sportive sensations starting from $133,000 Driveaway
Feel the ferocious thump on the back and dynamic cornering capabilities credited to the Porsche 718 Cayman’s low and central centre of gravity. The engine’s cylinders help to reduce oscillations due to their horizontally opposed arrangement, ensuring an alluringly smooth run, while the concentrated power of the engine is transmitted directly to the rear axle.
Porsche’s 718 models are renowned for high performance, handling, enticing design and the remarkable storage offered by two luggage compartments. The decadent design’s mid-engine concept casts these desires into features, positioned no further than 30cm behind the driver. What will you do with all that power? By systematically reducing the vehicle’s weight and optimally distributing the weight left over - the compact construction of the car as a two-seater plays an important part in this respect. You will not compromise comfort and everyday practicality; Porsche makes no sacrifice. Once the mid-mounted engine starts, the endless contours of the earth are yours to explore. And there you are, at the centre of it all. For more information, call in and meet Damien Holley, dealer principal of Porsche Centre Gold Coast or go to porschegoldcoast.com.au
