A cougar is a woman who dates younger men. Channel 7 explores the facts and fantasies in the blockbuster new series Cougar Town. Cougar Town seems likely to capture 2010 audiences to the same extent as 1980s iconic series Dynasty and Dallas. Courteney Cox takes the lead as Jules, a recently divorced single mother exploring the truth about dating in today’s beauty and youth obsessed culture. Most women in their 20s experience the challenge of meeting men but when Jules was in her 20s she had a husband and a child. Jules (now 40-something) has embarked on a journey of self-discovery. Jules’ companions on her journey are friends and family. Bobby (Brian Van Holt) plays Jules ex-husband, an under-achiever who tests her patience as they to raise their teenage son, Travis (played by Dan Byrd).

Laurie (Busy Philipps) is a younger, feisty co-worker who encourages Jules to get out and have fun. Ellie (Christa Miller) is a sarcastic, unapologetic confidante who is content with her life and marriage to Andy (Ian Gomez). Newlydivorced neighbour Grayson (Josh Hopkins) proves to be a catalyst of sorts for Jules. Executive producer, writer and director Bill Lawrence (Scrubs and Spin City), writer and co-executive producer Kevin Biegel (Scrubs) and executive producers Courteney Cox and David Arquette appear to have their fingers on the pulse of current audiences.
The plot Jules Cobb has been out of the dating game so long she has forgotten the rules. She decides it’s time to get off the shelf and into the action. Her good intentions are hampered by business responsibilities and two best friends who are frenemies. Her son is embarrassed by everything she says and does, while her ex-husband still drinks his morning coffee in her kitchen. Jules – a mother to the world – is trying to put herself first. With a little help from her friends she discovers it’s never too late to live like a 20-something, even at 40-something. Jules enters a world of crazy parties, hot boyfriends, and free limo rides. The side effects are many and varied but include embarrassing photos, late night food comas, and all day hangovers.
Courteney Cox gained overnight fame as the neurotic but loveable Monica Gellar on the Emmy Award-winning comedy Friends. This season, she teams with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence on the new comedy Cougar Town. Courteney recently starred in the Disney family comedy Bedtime Stories. She created, starred in, and produced the FX comedy Dirt. Last year she moved from producing to directing on the drama Monday Before Thanksgiving. She worked with Glamour magazine’s Reel Moments Project on a series of three short films based on real stories. The project benefits FilmAid International, an organisation that promotes health, strengthens communities, and enriches the lives of women around the world. In 2004, Cox and husband David Arquette established the Coquette production company. Projects to date included Dirt and an interior design show called Mix It Up for the Women’s Entertainment cable network.
Coquette produced the comedy Daisy Does America for TBS, and The Tripper, a horror film written and directed by Arquette. Cox made her acting debut in 1984 on the daytime soap As the World Turns. Later that year, Brian de Palma cast Cox in Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark video. In 1987, she was chosen to play the girlfriend of Michael J. Fox on Family Ties. Cox then appeared in several feature films, including the box-office success Ace Ventura: Pet Detective with Jim Carrey. The series Friends made Cox a household name. The show garnered Screen Actors Guild Award nominations from 1999 to 2004. In 1996, Cox starred in Wes Craven’s horror-comedy Scream. The film grossed more than $100 million. She went on in the same role in two additional Scream movies. Film credits include 3000 Miles to Graceland, Mr. Destiny, Cocoon: The Return, Zoom, November, The Longest Yard, and Barnyard. Cox is the face of the Avon Fragrance.

Jeweller Nicole Suhrbier has created an exquisite collection of pieces for 5th Avenue Jewellers at Pacific Fair. Nicole says the Ti Amo Collection is an expression of the loving care required in the creation of an outstanding piece of jewellery. “Ti amo is an Italian term of endearment. This collection expresses my love and passion for gemstones and quality design, it is also a tribute to my Italian heritage,” she says.
18 carat white gold wide pavé diamond ring with heart detail. Total diamond weight is 1.68 carats
“These pieces show the sincerity of the love a gift of fine jewellery represents. I know people who enjoy expressing the love they feel will enjoy viewing this collection as much as I enjoyed designing it.” These modern pieces were created by using the highest quality precious stones. The stones were hand selected so every stone in each piece is a perfect match. Nicole says the Ti Amo Collection takes lovers of fine jewellery from the first bloom of romance to the next stage of commitment and on to the eternal love that comes of becoming true soul mates. ‘The Ti Amo Collection will grow and develop in the same way as a lasting love. New pieces will be added each year, “ she says. Lustrous golden pearl ring with pavé diamond set leaf shapes
“The collection will expand to incorporate new elements in the same way as a long love affair or marriage moves through various stages,” she says. “My inspiration comes from a love of natural stones. The stone is the essential element. I created the concept for each piece, chose the initial stone and designed around it. “The multi-stone diamond pieces are my expression of classic styles. I was inspired by the world’s leading classical designers. My family has been in the jewellery business for decades. We travel to the world’s jewellery capitals and see the best of the best. “My love affair with fine Italian craftsmanship began when I was three years old, I fell in love with the magical lustre of superb pearls. The Ti Amo Collection features hand-selected high-grade pearls.”
Handmade 18 carat gold ring with three princess-cut diamonds. The centre diamond is 2.01 carats
Nicole says pearls come with romantic myths and legends. “Black and gold pearls represent wealth, blue expresses eternal love, and pink pearls are associated with success. Pearls are feminine and elegant, some of the most beautiful and stylish women in history wore pearls as their signature stone. 18 carat white gold two-in-one ring with a 1.06 carat round brilliant cut diamond
“My Italian background is part of my heritage but Australia is my home. I believe it is time to create an Australian jewellery icon, the Ti Amo Collection is the first step,” Nicole says.

Getting it off your chest Dr Terrence Scamp Visit www.esteemdayspa.com.au for more information.
While the Gold Coast is often associated with bikini girls and breast augmentation there are many women with too much of a good thing.
Excessively large breasts can be an inconvenience and a health hazard according to plastic surgeon Dr Terrence Scamp. Dr Scamp says the weight of the breasts can have an adverse effect on posture and lead to back and neck problems. “The pressure from bra straps can leave deep grooves on the shoulders. In warm weather, chaffing below the breasts can cause a rash. There is also the problem of finding clothes to fit and the embarrassing attention very large breasts attract,” Dr Scamp says. He says breast reduction can be performed on teenagers but is best left until growth is complete. “Even after a successful operation, hormones may cause continued breast growth. “Breast reduction involves reducing the size of the breast gland. The nipple is usually lifted as large breasts often sag. The breast skin is adjusted to fit the new shape and minimise the length of the scar. “Removing significant amounts of breast tissue and skin will result in scars. Usually breast reduction scars run around the areola (the area around the nipple) and down the breast. “There is usually a scar in the crease below the breast. The length of this scar depends on how much tissue and skin is removed. This scar is usually hidden under the curve of the breast,” Dr Scamp says.
He says there are many breast reduction techniques. “The modern focus is to reduce scarring. “This can sometimes compromise the breast shape. It is usually the least conspicuous scar in the fold below the breast that is reduced. “Women planning a breast reduction procedure should discuss the most appropriate procedure and likely scars with their plastic surgeon,” Dr Scamp says. He says breast reduction can cause nipples to feel numb. “The numbness usually wears off after three or four months but it can take up two years for sensation to return completely. Less than 10 per cent of breast reduction patients stay numb,” he says. Dr Scamp says post breast reduction complications are the same in any surgical procedure. “These include bleeding and infection. The risk of complications is in proportion to body weight, best results are achieved in patients of a healthy weight. “People who loose a significant amount of weight after a breast reduction may find a further decrease in breast size gives a flat, deflated look. Breast reduction patients enjoy freedom from heavy bras and weighty breasts. “Dressing is easier and comfort is enhanced. Back and neck discomfort (and deep strap marks) become a thing of the past,” Dr Scamp says.

Courts, cost and considerations An experienced solicitor offers viable solutions in the face of legal action. Leading Gold Coast lawyer Simon Bennett says courts are often described as casinos for the rich. “Most people think only large companies and wealthy individuals can afford the cost of litigation and there is some truth in this,” he says. “When civil and business matters can only be resolved by legal action or it is necessary to defend against proceedings there are ways to minimise costs. “It is essential to remove emotions from the equation. Litigation is often driven by feelings about justice or rights and wrongs. Legal action should only be taken after all the facts and the likely results are established. Few can afford the expense of proving a point in court. “It is important to choose a specialist solicitor who is experienced and competent. Very few lawyers have experience in running complex litigation in the superior courts. An inexperienced solicitor may make costly tactical errors. Sound representation comes through experience, knowledge of court procedure, and rules of evidence. Poorly drafted court documents are often challenged or redone – this all adds to the cost. “People who plan legal action should ask their solicitor detailed questions. This will show whether the solicitor has the necessary qualifications and experience. Superior court actions involve a barrister’s fee. The choice of barrister is crucial. “Errors in the preparation and presentation of a case are costly and may result in a negative outcome. Ensure money is spent wisely by engaging a solicitor who has intimate knowledge of and a good relationship with the bar, and I don’t mean the local pub,” he says. Simon says the best way of reducing legal costs is to work with a solicitor to establish a reasonable settlement. “Provide the solicitor with as much information as possible as soon as possible,” he says. “A settlement that is commercially acceptable in the light of risks and costs is a positive result. If a settlement can’t be reached then at least the solicitor has the full picture and the opportunity to gain the tactical advantage,” he says.

Lani Furlong, Amanda Hasell, Anne Slater, Robyn Hoare are living the dream with Arbonne
Beautifully successful Smart women understand opportunity must be based on firm foundations; a group of Gold Coast women share their secrets of success. Arbonne skin care, beauty, and health products created a revolution overseas before being launched in Australia. Now a group of women are taking Arbonne to the next level by linking quality products with business success. The Arbonne range is inspired by nature and enhanced by science. The products deliver results on every type of skin at every age. Local entrepreneur Amanda Hasell was introduced to Arbonne by a friend. She expected just another skin care product. Amanda was so impressed with the improvement in the texture and hydration of her skin she recommended the products to anyone who would listen. “Arbonne creates opportunities that are not available in regular business models,” Amanda says. “I knew nothing about the cosmetics or the direct selling industry, but I loved the products and the Arbonne system. “Now my dream team of consultants is dedicated to building Arbonne across Australia and helping others to achieve beauty, health, and income goals. “This business is not for everyone but it is for anyone. Arbonne consultants are in business for themselves but not by themselves. The secret of our success is team spirit. “Men and women with an established business or a career and people who would like to work from home can take advantage of this fantastic opportunity,” Amanda says.
A year after joining Arbonne, Amanda is enjoying enormous success. She recently became a national vice president and received a new Mercedes Benz. Regional vice presidents Robyn Hoare, Anne Slater, and Lani Furlong received new Mercedes as part of Arbonne’s bonus rewards scheme. Robyn Hoare joined Arbonne after sampling the products. “I couldn’t believe I had found an anti-ageing skin care range that suited my highly sensitive skin. I quickly recognised the business opportunity. I have spent the past 27 years joyfully raising seven children and had never been involved in the beauty industry. I made a decision to succeed and I am now living my dream thanks to Arbonne,” Robyn says. Product development scientist Anne Slater understood the integrity of the Arbonne formulas and packaging. Anne was attracted to the business because of the low set up costs and the instant earning potential. “After 32 weeks I reached regional vice president status, this gave me the confidence to achieve my goals and help others,” she says. Lani Furlong saw a dramatic improvement in her husband’s skin a few days after he began using Arbonne’s men’s anti-aging range. She attended a Swiss Beauty Workshop to experience the benefits of the products for herself. “It wasn’t long before I left my position as state manager of a major corporation to pursue my Arbonne business,” Lani says. For more information about Arbonne email Amanda Hasell at amanda@thedreamteam.com.au or call 0411 873 981.

CHANEL – the champagne of celebrity cosmetics
Belgian makeup artist Peter Philips is the global creative director for Chanel Makeup. His career was inspired by his early love of fashion and photography. Peter Philips studied graphic design and fine art before he became a make up artist. He gained attention by incorporating unusual materials including feathers, pearls, and fabrics in his runway make up designs.
“I wanted round doll-like cheeks with a healthy glow. I used Joues Contraste-Imprévu to create a fresh outdoor look. I then applied the Exclusive Creation Empreinte de Chanel to reinforce the freshness and to give a subtle glow with shades of gold and apricot.
Peter trained with Dominique Moncourtois and Heidi Morawetz (the duo headed Chanel Makeup for more than 30 years) before taking up his current position as global director for the international brand.
“On the nails I used Le Vernis-Particulière, a sophisticated taupe colour with a hint of grey, very chic,” Peter says.
His latest make-up collection uses chic beige tones and fresh looks with a rebellious touch of tattoos. Peter says the Impressions de Chanel has very soft nude shades.
Peter prepared the model’s skin with Hydramax+ Active Cream. Base Lumiere Pro Lumiere, Poudre Universelle Libre, and Correcteur Perfection created the natural, luminous look.
“I used pinks, light browns and beiges with touches of gold and green,” he says. “A satin-like transparent complexion was created with Pro Lumière foundation and a touch of Poudre Universelle Libre.
Eyes were accentuated with Les 4 Ombres Kaska Beige, Inimitable Waterproof Noir Mascara, Le Sourcil de Chanel, and Sculpte Sourcils.
“Eyes were made up with Les 4 Ombres in Kaska Beige with warm yet natural shades of browns, deep purple, and beige with a touch of gold and olive green. Lips look natural and fresh with Le Crayon Lèvres in Beige and Rouge Allure-Insouciante.
The soft blush on the cheeks comes from Joues Contraste Imprévu, Empreinte de Chanel. The model’s lips were highlighted with Lips Le Crayon Levres Beige, Rouge Allure Insouciante.

Moo Moo fits the bill for everything from business lunches to romantic dinners. It’s a top spot for product launches, fashion parades, weddings and parties.
Beef it up inBroadbeach Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill at Broadbeach on the Park, Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach (opposite Sofitel) is a winner. Moo Moo has won a record number of accolades including the hotly contested state-wide competitions.
Restaurateur Steven Adams works with executive chef Philip Edwards to create a menu of advanced Australian fare. Steven shows his skill in selecting the meat; Philip shows his unfaltering star quality in the treatment of the ingredients.
Moo Moo walked away with the Queensland’s Best Steak Restaurant and Queensland’s Best Informal Dining Restaurant Awards. The restaurant has been voted the Gold Coast’s Best Steak Restaurant each year from 2006 to 2009.
Menus change frequently to satisfy the large number of regular diners’ appetite for variety but the mainstay beef selections remain. The latest menu is an innovation. Diners are raving about the new style beef sashimi. This entrée features thinly sliced and seared wagyu beef garnished with fresh ginger, chives, and a citrus sesame dressing.
Moo Moo ticks all the boxes for style, service, food, wine and ambience. The striking open plan interior comfortably accommodates 140 people over two levels. The popular bar overlooks the park and the open kitchen is a conversation starter. As the name indicates, Moo Moo specialises in premium export quality beef. The menu features specially selected beef and some of the best cuts available in Australia.
Chef Philip has created a new duck dish and it’s sensational. He says the twice cooked honey and lemon duck is roasted on savoy cabbage and smoky bacon. “The flavours work well together, the texture is perfect and the method of cooking removes any excess fat. The dish is finished with muscatel sauce, diners love it,” Philip says.
Beef eaters are unable to resist the specialty beef. Steven selected certified the best wagyu from the Darling Downs. “Technically is AACO F1 wagyu rib fillet, (350 grams) with a marble score of six to nine. That describes the standard, but all people really need to know is it’s the best beef that money can buy with a superb flavour and melt-in-themouth texture,” he says. Make a meal of it at Moo Moo and indulge in one of the sensational desserts. Philip’s latest creation is a wicked selection of chocolate temptations featuring a cinnamon doughnut on chocolate sauce, chocolate chai latte with dark chocolate and Tia Maria ice-cream. Apart from fabulous food, Moo Moo has an exceptional wine selection. Every diner will find a wine to complement their chosen dish, their taste, and their budget. Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill serves lunch and dinner daily. Bookings are advised.

Foreveryoung Looking great is easy in the teens and 20s. Make good looks last with a little help from Dr Craig Layt and his team Radiant, flawless skin gives a fresh, youthful appearance. As we age skin loses elasticity and wrinkles appear. The latest non-surgical treatments from Cutera can restore skin texture and tone. Early signs of aging can appear in the 20s and are often quite obvious by the 30s. Lifestyle and sun damage accelerates the process so a stringent skin care regime is essential before and after anti-aging treatments. Plastic surgeon Dr Craig Layt and his team of highly trained professionals recommend Laser Genesis and Limelight procedures to help repair damage and restore a more youthful skin texture.
“The Limelight procedure is relatively painless; most patients say it feels like a series of hot pinches. The treatment is used to address pigmentation and browning can occur for seven to 10 days. “The Genesis treatment gives a warming sensation and some people experience mild discomfort. The skin may be a little red for about 24 hours. Laser Genesis and Limelight treatments result in a subtle, natural, and smoother looking skin with improved tone and even colour. We recommend four to six treatments two or four weeks apart,” Dr Layt says.
Dr Layt says Laser Genesis and Limelight procedures give excellent results with little to no downtime. “Limelight targets rough texture and pigmentation caused by sun damage, poor diet, and smoking,” he says.
The signs of aging are more evident in the 40s and 50s. Dr Layt says Pearl, a new nonsurgical procedure, reduces visible signs of aging in just one or two treatments. “Pearl improves age spots, pigmentation and evens out the skin tone,” he says.
“Laser Genesis works on texture, redness and open pores. Both treatments stimulate collagen production. Collagen is the support structure of the skin, the stimulation enhanced by the procedure continues over time.
“The Pearl laser treatment removes the damaged, upper layer of skin and heats the lower layers to give long lasting results. The treatment improves fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture.
“Pearl gives effective, safe and predictable results. Patients say the Pearl procedure feels like a series of brief pinches. Down time is three to five days, during this time it is important to keep skin moist with a special ointment. The skin usually begins to peel on the third day but may be disguised with make up. “Pearl offers even more help with the fractional laser. This new volumising treatment helps repair sun damage in one treatment. It stimulates collagen production and plumps the skin from below. This helps reverse photo-aging and other imperfections. Pearl Fusion is a combination treatment of Pearl and Pearl Fractional procedures,” he says. Dr Layt says excess facial and body hair problems can be solved with Cutera’s multiwavelength laser. “This is the most versatile and fastest solution for all skin types. Cutera gives long term results with the least number of treatments and minimal discomfort,” he says. Visit www.drlayt.com for more information on non-surgical and surgical procedures. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Good restaurants and good diners make a perfect match but there are less than perfect restaurants and some very dodgy diners.
Dineandwhine Dining out should be a delightful experience. The food is part of it but good company, a pleasant ambience, and good service take precedence.
Chefs spend more time training than accountants and doctors. Accountants and doctors do not spend around 100 hours a week in a hot, sweaty kitchen.
Most people desire a warm welcome, efficient service, and a clean, pleasant environment.
Add to this the impossible task of pleasing all of the people all of the time. Diners often think they know more about the menu than the chef who created it.
The perfect dining experience starts with the host welcoming the person who made the booking by name. The host then escorts the diner or diners to their table and offers the wine list, a menu, and water. Picture this – clients arrive, reception area is grubby, host asks if they are sure they had a booking. After five, 10 or 15 minutes the host returns from a perceived alien abduction to announce Mary, Joe, or whoever had the day off and forgot to enter the booking. It is not our problem. The cool welcome continues. ‘Chef says we can squeeze you in’. Go for it chef, it will never be a problem again because we will not be back but we know it is not your fault. Spare a thought for the chef. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Everyone is an expert when it comes to food. Impolite diners look at the menu and then ask for alterations to a dish or something that is not on the menu. A chef we all know and love was asked to discuss the menu with a table of high profile people who didn’t like anything from chef’s carefully planned selection. “What do you recommend?” asked the ring leader. “You go somewhere else,” said chef. Cheeky but in fact the chef was right, these people would have complained regardless of the quality of the meal. The least popular diners are those who show up without a booking, arrive very late, or bring 10 people when the booking was made for two or four people.
by Catherine Taylor
There are obnoxious diners who swear they have waited an hour for a meal when it’s actually 15 minutes. The worst diner is the connoisseur who actually knows very little about food and throws salt, pepper and sauce on a dish they haven’t event tasted. Restaurants have very high overheads. Food, rent, rubbish removal, laundry, a host of hidden extras, and wages make it difficult to make a crust. Food must be ordered and prepared (that’s why table bookings are useful, it helps to know how many people will be dining). Tables have to be set, a table for four takes up a bit more than a square metre, a table for 10 takes much more floor space. Diners often complain about paying for water but the restaurant has to provide a glass and service. The glass must be washed whether it was used for non-profit water or small profit wine. We all have our favourite restaurants (mine are shown throughout Label). Restaurateurs have favourite guests. These are not necessarily the big spenders, they are VIPs because they have good manners, arrive on-time and order from the menu.

Man hunts for fountain of youth Cosmetic treatments were once considered a female domain but there is a growing army of men seeking medical advice on how to improve their looks
Australian Skin Clinics cosmetic physician Simon Rosenbaum reports a dramatic increase in the number of men who want to turn back the clock and restore virile good looks. “Around 17 per cent of our facial enhancement clients are male,” Dr Rosenbaum says. “Our Boy-tox muscle relaxing treatments are the most popular non-surgical procedures for men. “Looking good improves confidence. Men tend to have stronger facial muscles; this makes their frowns deeper and more pronounced. They know a fresher, younger face will boost their chances on the singles scene. For some it is a career investment, younger looking men have a business edge,” he says. Dr Rosenbaum says most men are concerned about frown lines between the eyes. “Deep lines create an angry expression. We can get rid of the lines to give men a more approachable appearance. The look is dynamic,” he says. “This can be a career advantage, salesman are more successful when greeting potential buyers with a friendly face. A pleasant looking lawyer will make a greater impression in the courtroom. “The Boy-tox injections are a convenient way to enhance the appearance without surgery. Injections temporarily paralyse the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. “Within days of treatment, frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet fade or disappear. The procedure takes about 10 minutes, so clients can schedule appointments during their lunch hour. “Discomfort is minor and usually lasts just a few seconds. There is virtually no recovery period so men can return to their normal routine immediately. All healthy men who begin to notice wrinkles and lines around the eyes or between the brows benefit from Boy-tox. “Men who want to look younger and more relaxed can utilise this quick, non-invasive procedure. Most of the men who enjoy the benefits of the treatment range from their 30s to their 50s and are keen to minimise or prevent early signs of ageing,” Dr Rosenbaum says. Take 10 minutes to look up to 10 years younger. Visit www.ozskin.com or call Australian Skin Clinics in Ashmore to make an appointment.

Bulgariand themovie stars Bulgari and movies is a match made in heaven. These unique pieces of Italian made jewellery have adorned silver screen stars since the 1930s. Brilliant diamonds and coloured stones interpret love, betrayal, and passion through world famous icons. The rarest gems and the most beloved stars create magic when they meet on screen. Silver screen icons go beyond celebrity status, they shine as luminaries in an eternal galaxy of brilliant stars. True stars include Elizabeth Taylor, Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe, Anna Magnani, and Lauren Bacall.
In the golden years of Italian cinema, great movie stars were models of elegance, beauty, and daring. Who could forget the on screen presence of Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren, Soraya, Silvana Mangano, and Claudia Cardinale. During the shooting of Roman Holiday in 1953, Audrey Hepburn frequently visited the Bulgari store on Via Condotti to buy precious items. These ranged from compacts to evening bags, cigarette cases, and a solid gold pin. Audrey showed perfect taste by wearing a string of Bulgari pearls in the 1979 film Blood Line.
Fabulous jewels show star quality on and off the screen.
Image courtesy of Reporters Associati The 1959 Hollywood blockbuster Never so Few starred Gina Lollobrigida and Frank Sinatra. Gina captured the dream when she appeared in a silk dress adorned by a splendid 1950’s style parure set with turquoise and diamonds. In 1969, Gina presented the Italian television program Stasera wearing Bulgari emerald and diamond pendant earrings and a platinum brooch set with a 27 carat step-cut emerald surrounded by diamonds. In the 1961 hit Come September, Gina wore platinum earrings with diamonds and natural pearls. She set a new fashion with Bulgari pendant earrings featuring three strings of rubies and diamonds. Later the same year, she wore a splendid yellow gold pin with pearls and diamonds in Go Naked in the World. Her love of beautiful jewels showed at the Venice Film Festival in 1962. Gina wore a platinum and diamond necklace, featuring seven emeralds with a total weight of 133 carats.

In 1963, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton sealed their love with a Bulgari pin featuring an 18.61 carat step-cut emerald surrounded by pear-cut diamonds. On their wedding day in 1964, Elizabeth wore the magnificent jewel on a yellow chiffon dress. The moment was captured by photographer Farabola The pin was immortalised in The VIP’s (1963). Richard Burton said he introduced Elizabeth to beer and she introduced him to Bulgari. In 1968, on the set for the film Boom, Elizabeth wore her own collection of Bulgari jewels in her superb portrayal of Mrs Goforth. When Elizabeth appeared with Henry Fonda and Helmut Berger in Ash Wednesday (1973) she wore natural pearl and diamond earrings.

The sapphire, ruby, and diamond necklace worn by Sophia Loren to the Hollywood premiere of La Ciociara and in Milan for the premiere of Boccaccio ‘70 in 1962 dates from the end of the 1950s. The fabulous platinum and diamond Bulgari necklace with 18 oval-cut rubies adorned one of the most envied décolleté of all times. Sophia wore a necklace with cabochon cut rubies and diamonds at a gala dinner with Maurice Chevalier in Paris in 1959. In London with Charlie Chaplin at the presentation of the film La Contessa di Hong Kong and on the set of the film Pretà-porter in 1994, she wore an extra-large hat with a yellow gold parure set with rubies. Sophia posed for Vogue Italia in 1993 with a yellow gold parure set with baguette cut diamonds. The piece was created in 1992 and is now part of the Bulgari vintage collection. The exclusive platinum and diamond necklace worn by Ingrid Bergman in The Visit (1963), and then by Gina Lollobrigida in The Woman of Straw (1964) was the result of one year’s work. Innumerable stars frequented Bulgari on Via Condotti. The exclusive jeweller was a favourite with Gary Cooper, Barbara Hutton, Orson Wells, Rossano Brazzi, Vittorio De Sica, Anna Magnani, Ava Gardner, and Zsa Zsa Gabor. In 1959, Clark Gable purchased two white gold wedding rings, a solid gold cigarette case, and a lighter. More recent additions to star status includes Sharon Stone, Susan Sarandon, Catherine Zeta Jones, CharlizeTheron, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman. Bulgari has dedicated a unique piece of jewellery to each of them. Jessica Lange appeared in ’76 version of King Kong wearing a gold chain and bracelet covered with diamonds. Bulgari is mentioned in the script of American Gigolo. Madonna appeared as Evita Peron in 1995 wearing the 1957 diamond en tremblant pin. Pierce Brosnan gave a splendid diamond necklace to René Russo in the Thomas Crown Affair. Sarah Jessica Parker wore Bulgari jewels in Sex and the City; as did Charlize Theron in The Astronaut’s Wife and The Italian Job. Jennifer Lopez wore Bulgari in The Wedding Planner, Claudia Cardinale in And Now Ladies and Gentleman; Catherine Zeta Jones in Intolerable Cruelty and Ocean’s Twelve, Uma Thurman in My Super Ex-girlfriend; Jennifer Aniston in Friends with Money; Kim Basinger in The Sentinel, and Kate Winslet in Holiday. Bulgari has triumphed with jewels and watches. The Tubogas serpent watch is recognisable in several films since 1971. It was most recently worn by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (2006).

Susan Sarandon appeared with a Parentesi watch in Twilight, Mission Impossible I and II, Minority Report, and South Kensington. Intolerable Cruelty shows Catherine Zeta Jones carrying a Bulgari handbag and wearing a square watch. In Ocean’s Twelve she says it’s a Bulgari job. Cinema is fascinating and even more so when the star is Bulgari.

Fabulous Fellini
Fellini is famed for fabulous classic Italian cuisine. Restaurateur Tony Percuoco is a master of the art that made Italy famous.
Fellini sets a benchmark with superb food and quality wine in scintillating surroundings. A great location overlooking the Broadwater from Marina Mirage, sophisticated ambience, fabulous food, and professional service makes Fellini the Gold Coast’s leading Italian restaurant. National and international food reviewers are obviously impressed with Fellini; the restaurant frequently features in the foodies’ favourite handbooks. The background of the Percuoco family always rates a mention along with the menu and wine list. The Percuoco family’s reputation for serving fine food in interesting establishments was founded in Italy four generations ago and extended first to Sydney and then to the Gold Coast. Most gourmets agree the Percuoco family introduced Australia to the style of cuisine we now describe as modern Italian.
Fellini’s menu offers a selection of seafood, meat dishes, and pastabased meals but the combination of flavours, skilful cooking, and exquisite presentation adds a new dimension to Italian food. Start with beautiful Italian breads, explore the selection of entrées, light meals, salads, and main courses. Pasta is served with a selection of gourmet ingredients and sauces are a speciality. The collection of classic Italian dishes changes with the seasons but taste, colour, flavour and exquisite presentation is always the primary focus. The wine list complements the menu with quality Australian and imported wines. More than half the wines on the list are available by the glass. Fellini is open every day for lunch and dinner. LABEL The Gold Coast moved into a new era of sophistication in 1970s and ‘80s. Tourists from Sydney, Melbourne, and overseas demanded a slicker approach to dining and local restaurateurs were keen to please. Restaurants and nightclubs opened from Surfers to Coolangatta but Queensland licensing laws did not allow for the wine bars that were popular interstate. Smart operators were quick to spot the loopholes in the law and several employed doormen to ask patrons if they intended to dine. The answer was always yes although many establishments sold little food. In the ‘70s restaurants flourished. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating had not yet introduced Fringe Benefits Tax so long lunches and dinners with ‘clients’ were all tax deductible. Drink driving laws were less strict and there were no breathalysers. Business people, tourists, and ladies who lunched spent many hours enjoying fresh seafood and a few dozen drinks at Ron Roman’s River Inn on the water in Ferny Avenue. Eliza’s at the top of Cavill Avenue (before it became a mall) was the place to see and be seen after work. Quality Inns had Surfers covered; the company owned the Islander, Beachcomber, The Chateau, Iluka and Apollo. Each hotel property had a well patronised dining room. The Spanish Room at the Broadbeach International was another favourite haunt. The Captain’s Table in Cavill Avenue was an excellent restaurant with superb service but prices were considered high and it was definitely a special occasion venue. Some local restaurants opted for fine food European style but others found fresh food, plenty of it and a casual atmosphere was the order of the day. Marlene and Bruce Carter were among the best known names in dining along with Marie and Emile Bensoussan. The Carter’s opened the Holy Mackerel in Labrador and the Crab Cooker further down the highway. The Cavill family opened Cav’s Steakhouse in 1984 and Oscar’s was the jewel in the Orchid Avenue crown. These restaurants attracted local diners, travelling business people and tourists. The Holy Mackerel survived until recently and only closed due to redevelopment of the site.

The way we were A look back at the Gold Coast entertainment scene Cav’s is still a favourite and Oscar’s is the main attraction at Burleigh. The Bensoussan’s achieved legendary status. They owned Froggy’s and Woggy’s in Orchid Avenue, Marie et Emile in the Condor Building and La Plume de Ma Tante in Price Street Nerang. In those days, Nerang was considered the country. To make a success of a French restaurant this far out of town took more than a little skill. Marie and Emile used their charm and culinary flair to make it one of the most popular dining venues on the coast. Australia was a less sophisticated country in the ‘70s but a cultural revolution was beginning. In a relatively short time the country had voted against the six o clock swill (the term used to describe what happened when licensed premises closed at 6pm) and women were admitted in to areas other than the Ladies Lounge.
Immigrants were gradually accepted, their formerly disparaged foreign ways were adding a touch of spice to local dining. French food was the most acceptable and many establishments developed a rather pretentious pseudo-French style. Seagulls Rugby League Club presented an entirely French menu but the spelling and descriptions indicated a lack of knowledge of the French language and the cuisine. All things considered the menu was impressive – escargot, bourguignon, crepe de mer, poisson du jour, canard a l’orange and several filets de boeuf were featured. Women (then always referred to as ladies, titled or not) were presented with menus sans prices and everything was silver service. Andre’s Swiss and French Food Restaurant at James Street Burleigh attracted a crowd and (according to the advertisements) former Hong Kong chef Johnny Chopsticks
served Cantonese dishes at 5th Avenue Restaurant in Palm Beach. Domino’s Cocktail Lounge in Palm Beach was serving four-course dinners of seafood, roasts, omelettes, and steaks for $4.95 so everyone could afford a bottle of two of wine to accompany their meals. Lindeman’s Table Flagons (a huge bottle containing more than two litres) was a popular choice at $2.55 and Bin 231 Rhine Riesling was $1.79 a bottle. Ben Ean was Australia’s biggest selling wine. This rather sweet concoction retailed at $1.89 in 1979. Barossa Castle Spumante at $1.49 a bottle was for ladies and special dates. Wine connoisseurs recommend Kassell’s Cold Duck at $1.29 a pop. The story continues in the June edition of Label when we look at the changes in home entertainment, cooking, nightlife, and fashion.

The getting of wisdom The transition from childhood to adulthood is far more complex than learning multiplication tables or receiving a first kiss. Jess Maher shares her Schoolies experience The transition from childhood to adulthood begins as graduates leave secondary school to enter the workforce or tertiary education with a push from the educational system and little else. Apprentice adults fresh out of school are suddenly considered responsible enough to deal with adult realities. In fact, the nearest most Gen Y Australians get to a graduation ceremony is Schoolies. This festival does nothing to improve the reputation of Gen Y. It is best known for law breaking and out of control behaviour. Schoolies is now considered a rite of passage into adulthood yet it is generally
Reality in my limited experience is often quite different from perception. This is a true record of Schoolies 2009 as it was for me and most of my Gen Y mates. It’s not as scary as most adults imagine. Day one: We arrived at a sophisticated resort about two kilometres from the heart of Surfers Paradise and spent the day relaxing before heading into town. After a ridiculously overpriced meal with legally purchased alcoholic beverages, we ventured down the road for a discounted Schoolies game of bowling. This was followed by an hour in the official Schoolies precinct surrounded by sweaty but contented school leavers.
portrayed with all society fears including under age drinking, violence, and unsafe sexual behaviour.

Day two: We relaxed by the pool, searched for Schoolies T-shirts and sipped iced tea.
Instead of partying with the masses, our crew opted for a night in with movies. Day three: As per day two. Days four and five: We enjoyed a houseboat adventure. Kayaking, swimming, and hanging out with friends are the best part of Schoolies. The start of 2010 signified the end of Schoolies and the start of adulthood as former year 12 students wrestled with a raft of major decisions. University applications and letters of offer reinforced dreams and ambitions. Many gave a glimpse of the sometimes-harsh realities of life. Last year’s Schoolies wear the newly acquired title of adult as we venture into the world ready to make a difference and prove the stereotypes wrong. Good luck 2009 graduates and welcome to the real world.

A day without wine is a day without sunshine
Moderation is recommended but abstaining is no fun Drinking wine with a meal and cooking with wine adds another dimension to the enjoyment of food. We have come to accept red meats are best with red wine, fish and chicken with white wine but that is only the beginning. The only way to learn about the best wine to drink with or add to a particular dish is to experiment. There’s a bunch of grape varieties and a plethora of wine styles. At last count there were more than 11000 wine labels in Australia. The only way to find good wine is to taste it. Try the different grape varieties and different styles from different regions. Learning to match food with wine takes time and patience. If in doubt read the label and try the recommended combinations. Ask the sommelier (highly educated wine expert) at your favourite restaurant for ideas. Cheese and wine for example is an accepted match but some cheese is better with beer, port or a sweet dessert wine.

Highly seasoned and slow-cooking dishes will overwhelm grand wines, save the money for a perfect match with an expensive or exceptional vintage wine. Champagne (not to be confused with sparkling wine) is always perfect, choose a house or a style to suit individual tastes. Wine is a flavouring agent and can be used as a marinade to tenderise tougher cuts of meat. Meat can be left covered and refrigerated in the marinade for several hours, pat dry before cooking. The marinade can often be used in the cooking or to finish off a sauce. Slow cooked red meat dishes are fine with lesser wines but don’t expect to get good flavours by adding a wine that is undrinkable. If you can’t drink it don’t cook with it is the golden rule. A fillet of beef or pan-fried steak can be finished off with a decent red wine in a simple sauce. Just take out the meat, leave it to rest in a warm place, add wine to the pan juices and reduce until thickened. Chefs call this deglazing the pan. Lamb has a higher fat content and is best with high-acid cool-climate reds based on cabernet. Choose wines from Coonawarra, the Margaret River in Western Australia or Tasmania. Pork and ham are best with young, fruity reds and veal blends well with rosé, slightly sweeter whites and aromatic styles such as traminer and riesling varietals. Spicy dishes are difficult to match with wine. Opt for sweeter wine or a lager style beer.
Robin Hood
LABEL
The old story stands a retelling as the key points are as applicable today as they were centuries ago Robin Hood is a timeless action adventure destined to hit the big screen on May 13. The cast includes Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Léa Seydoux, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle. Oscar winner Russell Crowe stars as Robin Hood, the legendary hero who has survived generations of readers, moviegoers, and television viewers. Robin’s exploits ignite the imaginations of people who share a spirit of adventure and righteousness. During the 1200s, Robin and his band of marauders confronted the English hierarchy as they attempted to gain a better deal for ordinary people. This movie shows how Robin and his merry men fight corruption and lead an uprising against the crown. This Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer. Robin’s motivation was once self-preservation, he served in King Richard’s army in the war against France. King Richard dies and Robin travels to Nottingham. He finds the town under the control of a corrupt sheriff and the townspeople struggling under the burden of crippling tax and injustice. Robin falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett) but the lady mistrusts his motivation. In the hope of impressing Maid Marion, Robin sets out to salvage the village. He assembles a gang of men with lethal mercenary skills matched only by an appetite for life. They prey on the indulged upper class in an attempt to restore justice. England in the 13th century was embattled by decades of war, weakened by the ineffective rule of a new king, vulnerable to insurgence from within and threats from afar. Robin and his unlikely band of heroes attempted to return the glory and protect the country from civil war.
