30 million albums sold, worldwide concert success and a new album – Pink is on top of the world.
F
or any artist, established or not, an invitation to perform at Prince William’s 21st birthday party would be the dream gig. For Pink it was a chance to say that she didn’t agree with some of the things that were happening in the life of the young prince such as fox hunting and the Queen’s use of fur and offered to educate him on the issues she thought were important. As you can imagine no further correspondence was received. In short it sums up the life and times of this popular American singer/songwriter - I’ll do it my way, regardless of the consequences, and see what eventuates. Pink was born Alecia Beth Moore in 1979, her mother Judith a nurse and father Jim a Vietnam veteran who also was a nurse, and her earliest dreams always revolved around music and singing. “My ambition from a young age was to be a rock star and from about the age of 14 I was performing in clubs in Philadelphia.” Like every teenager she went through phases and fashions changing her focus and look from skateboarder, to hip-hopper, to rave child, to lead singer in a rock band. A rebellious teen she turned to drugs after her father and mother split up. “My parents were both nurses so I could look up what the drugs were and their effect on the body so that I understood what they could do. My Mum kicked me out but after I signed my first record contract at 16 I stopped and have never touched drugs since.” She took the stage name Pink, partially because of her habit of blushing and also the character Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs. “Because of my shyness at one stage I would make people turn around when I was singing because I couldn’t stand them watching me perform.” She joined an R&B all girl group but left to pursue a solo career and so began the rocket ride to international stardom. Her debut album ‘Can’t Take Me Home’ was released in 2000 and sold five million copies worldwide. Two top 10 singles and double platinum status in America later, it was an exclamation point and the confirmation of her stated childhood desire to be a rock star. More success followed when she joined Christine Aguilera, Mya and Lil Kim to form Lady Marmalade in the soundtrack for the film Moulin Rouge in 2001. It was her first number one hit and also earned the group a Grammy. But much like her dealings with Prince William, she refused to play the game and become just another pop act. She enlisted the help of one her idols, Linda Perry, the former singer with cult band 4 Non Blondes to help with her writing and recording. “I wanted a new sound and greater artistic control,” she explained simply. That album, Missundaztood, released in late 2001, became a global smash with sales in excess of 12 million copies. It was also in 2001 that she met professional motocross racer Corey Hart at the X Games in Philadelphia and their on again/off again relationship has been the stuff of tabloids ever since. A brief split in 2003 was followed by reconciliation in 2005 and her famous marriage proposal. Holding up his pit board with the words ‘Will You Marry Me?’ on it as he hurtled around the track would have to

rank as one of the more novel ways of approaching a life of wedded bliss. They married the following year, separated two years later, got back together in 2010 and in 2011 a daughter, Willow Sage Hart was born. It is apt that the traditional colour of girls, pink, would dovetail neatly with her stage name. If as happens with most children who rebel against their parents, Pink has mused aloud that Willow will more than likely want to do ballet, play chess and wear dresses, the total opposite of Alecia Moore as a young child. Since the release of ‘Missundaztood’, Pink has released the albums Try This, I’m Not Dead, Funhouse and The Truth About Love and toured extensively to promote and publicise those releases. As her music has evolved over the years so too have Pink’s stage performances. In a sense they have become a metaphor for her life incorporating trapeze, gymnastics and exuberance into one heady package. Famous for exposing her life through her words and music she has taken that high wire act and working without a net attitude on to the vast arenas and become one of the more legendary live performers in world music. She is particularly adored in Australia. The Funhouse tour travelled through Europe, North America and here earning a staggering $150 million and being seen and enjoyed by three million adoring fans. The Australian leg of the tour was seen by 660,000 people and is the most successful concert tour ever staged in this country. That is quite a change from the young performer who preferred to sing unseen while she poured her heart out on stage. From mid May to the end of August in 2009, she crammed in an amazing 59 concerts, happy to add extra dates to satisfy the demand and equally glad to mix and mingle with her fans wherever she went. In September Pink will release her latest album ‘The Truth About Love’ which includes the smash new single ‘Blow Me (One Last Kiss)’. So far this musical phenomenon has released 6 albums, sold over 30 million albums, 65 million singles (nearly 20 million digital tracks), over 1 million DVD’s worldwide and has had 11 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. ‘The Truth About Love’ is certain to add to that extraordinary track record from her millions of devoted fans. Away from singing, writing, recording and performing, Pink is a staunch supporter of P.E.T.A. and a passionate supporter of Save The Children, the Prince’s Trust, UNICEF, Take Back The Night and various human rights campaigns. Her Australian tour during 2009 coincided with the devastating bushfires in Victoria, prompting her to give an immediate donation of $250,000 to aid the victims of that tragedy. For anyone so determined to defiantly march to her own beat, it is hard to categorise someone who has been both pop star and rebellious icon. Her mixture of raw self-revelation through her songs and ability to constantly find new ways to express herself has inspired and motived millions. She is in short the ultimate pop package, fearless, honest and best of all, the kid can really sing.

Janece Penney
Alison Atia Receiving a personally written ‘thank you’ note from the likes of Victoria Beckham, Alyssa Milano and Hugh Hefner; fixing, via make-up, the black eye of Nathan Corbett, local Kick Boxing World Champion, before a TV interview; a personal make-up consultancy with members of the Royal family of Dubai. It is all in a day’s work for Alison Atia, the livewire managing director of Skin O2 and Alive Cosmetic Surgery Clinics. “What got me into the skin care industry was the idea of having perfect skin. I used to suffer from acne and skin sensitivity so I became obsessed with cosmetic ingredients in beauty and make-up products and the side effects they have on skin. As a beauty therapist and being fortunate to work with my life partner, Dr Aaron Atia, we both shared the passion to provide better results for our patient’s dermatological and body concerns. We were frustrated at the low concentration of high quality ingredients and the cheap, ineffective carriers in most of the make-up and cosmetics used by our patients,” she explains. Customer care would be the best way to describe the philosophy behind the success of Skin O2. “We want to make a difference and throw out the window the old school trend that make-up is for cover up. Our Doctor’s Formula make-up actually treats your skin while you wear it. From mineral makeup that lightens and brightens the skin as your wear it to lash enhancing mascara that instantly paints on fake lashes but grows and enhances at the same time.” Born in Lusaka, Africa and having lived in various countries as a young child, Alison has spent most of her adult life in Australia and has lived on the Gold Coast for the last 10 years. “I was very much a dreamer as a child who always believed you could achieve anything that you could imagine. My motto is ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it’ and it is something I’ve tried to instil in my sons aged five and seven.” Alison’s background in brand and business management combined with an enduring interest in cosmetic chemistry and an extreme passion for skin make her the perfect person for her role. “I like to collect expert and passionate people around me and create a great team. The Skin O2 family consists of everyone from doctors, engineers, lab technicians, chemists, beauty therapists, gifted client managers and clinical trainers through to properly trained warehousing and manufacturing staff. Across Australia we have hundreds of stockists and therapists who share our passion of helping thousands of Aussies get great skin.” Passion, dedication and pride – Alison has them all. 8
“Having this business was never quite my idea.” The speaker is Janece Penney as she sits in Diva Tea and Coffee House in Marina Mirage. “My husband had sold his Brisbane pharmacy and my daughter Annaleise had recently completed a degree in hospitality and they thought Diva would be a great business for Annaleise to manage. She became the business manager for 10 plus years, but Ross returned to locum pharmacy and Annaleise married, so I ended up with Diva. Now I really enjoy the interaction with our customers, the great young staff, and meeting new people – it is the best thing. I suppose I’m a bit of a den mother overseeing ‘the kids’ who work here but it keeps me young and in touch and I am very proud that it has been a family run business for 20 years.” The daughter of RAAF pilot Angus Mac Ivor and legendary charity worker Nan, Janece’s first foray into the work force was in Government Hospital medical laboratories. “I loved the work and I continued until I married – in those days you had to leave the public service after marriage. After that I worked in private practice pathology and eye specialist’s rooms between raising three children, Lachlan, Annaleise and Melinda.” Sadly the marriage ended after 19 years and Janece returned to full time work. “I applied successfully for a position with the National Heart Foundation as a fund-raising coordinator which involved lots of travel throughout Queensland from Thursday Island and out west to Roma. It was great fun, rewarding, but very draining and a huge disruption to family life. My parents were a great help with the family whilst I travelled.” Then fate, in the shape of Ross Penney, stepped into her life. “Supposedly we met by chance but our mutual medical friends set us up to meet at a dinner party. We clicked straight away and married in 1989. It was not long after this that we purchased Diva and here I am.” Over the years many memorable people have fronted the counter of the trendy eatery and Janece laughs at the memory of one guest. “Everybody from the likes of George Clooney, Elle McPherson, Michael Caine, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell and the Foo Fighters has been here. The most memorable was Anna Kournikova. The young man who served her was a huge fan and when she appeared in the queue he was dumbstruck. Couldn’t move or speak and eventually we had to push him out of the way to serve her. I’m sure that happened to her all the time because she just laughed.” Not everyone is a famous star but Janece’s philosophy of treating everyone the same way has stood her and the team at Diva in good stead.

Behind the brand
lorna jane
From cottage industry to global retail success, Lorna Jane talks about her journey.
What was the catalyst for starting out in fashion? I started designing activewear for myself after feeling bored of the usual exercise outfits being offered. I wanted to feel stylish and confident in what I wore. I wasn’t finding this in stores so I went about making my own activewear. My first pattern was made by pulling apart my favourite swimsuit and laying it on some newspaper. Was there something that you would describe as your ‘big break’ in the fashion industry? To be honest, I consider the women in my aerobics classes as the leaders in the path to my big break. I would never have shared my activewear with anyone else if it wasn’t for these women’s immediate requests and love for what I was designing. They taught me so much about designing for the customer, and responding to their feedback. Your designs are about active living. To keep ahead are you actively talking to your customers or is it driven by your own need for comfort and good looks? There are so many components that go into the inspiration for our designs. I’m driven by my own personal comfort and what I think looks good, as well as the opinion of our design team as we road test all of our products. We receive all of our customer feedback through social media, with Facebook being a critical tool for connecting with them directly. It’s an invaluable tool to respond to our customers. Who or what has been your greatest influence in fashion? Once again, the Lorna Jane customer has been my greatest influence. Ever since I started making activewear for the women in my classes, I am driven to provide the absolute best products that they will love to wear every day, and that will ultimately inspire them to live a healthy, happy and active life. You currently operate more than 120 stores across Australia and three in the U.S.A. Is the next big step to spread the brand around the globe? We want to inspire women worldwide, so there are definitely many big plans to expand the brand throughout the globe. At the moment, we will focus on our U.S.A. expansion, as we plan to have over 10 stores in total by the end of the year. It’s a very exciting time for us and we can’t wait to share our brand.
18

Next year will be your 22nd in full time design and retail. In something as fickle as fashion what has been the secret to maintaining your edge? At Lorna Jane, it’s not only about fashion; it’s about inspiring women to lead their best lives. We want women to not only look good but feel good, and that’s what they receive when they purchase our activewear. Most importantly, we provide women with the tools to live active. I live by my own philosophy; Move, Nourish, Believe, which has also become our brand mantra for our team members and customers to embrace. Retail has changed dramatically in the last ten years via online shopping and overseas purchases. How are you combating that and managing to draw customers to your boutiques? I think the most important thing to understand about today’s retail environment is that you can’t control your customers – some women love actually walking into a store and getting the whole experience, from touching the product and trying on outfits, to speaking to our team members and receiving their opinion. Other women love the convenience of being able to shop in the comfort of their own homes, or while they’re at work. Did you come to fashion via design school or is it a God given talent combined with hard work and a great eye for detail? I started designing without having any qualifications, just my passion for making my own clothes and a lot of patience. I sometimes became so fed up with the leotard I was sewing that I wanted to throw it out the window! That was never an option though, as I always told myself to never give up! I gained a lot of experience through trial and error but I did eventually decide to complete a fashion course to refine my skills. Apart from design what is your secret skill or talent? It might sound a bit silly but I really think my positivity is my secret skill. My mum can tell you that I was never seen not smiling as a young girl, and I always look on the bright side of every situation. My unwavering positivity has allowed me to push past any challenges and strive to be the best that I can possibly be.

David Jones
s/s launch
Forget 50 Shades of Grey, this Spring/Summer is all about splashing as much colour as you can handle.
If you didn’t know better you would swear that the fashion gods (and goddesses) had decreed that the David Jones spring/summer 12 season launch was designed exclusively for the Gold Coast. Fresh colours, big bright prints and a trunk full of attitude – everything looked to be tailor made to make local fashion folk purr with delight. Held in Sydney, the launch showcased some of our amazing models including headline act Miranda Kerr, Samantha Harris and Jessica Gomes doing our Australian designers proud. Carla Zampatti, Ginger and Smart, Alex Perry, Trelise Cooper, Akira, Romance Was Born and Collette Dinnigan were all featured. Trends included skinny legged pants in bright floral and prints with the occasional wildly patterned black and white thrown in for good measure. But it was the acid neon brights, contrasting kaleidoscopic prints and outrageous florals that had the VIP crowd of 400 in raptures. Not that Gold Coasters ever need an excuse to drench themselves in too much colour but this time it’s official – colour us happy. 20

Sculpt your way to a better body. Say goodbye to stubborn fat because ‘Coolsculpting’ is here.
Miranda Kerr in Lisa Ho
Dr. Craig Layt, highly qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, is excited about the quantum leap this new procedure brings to the age old battle of reducing those unwanted bulges.
Akira
Trends included skinny legged pants in bright floral and prints with the occasional wildly patterned black and white.
“The procedure is non-invasive and perfect for those hard to move love handles or muffin tops. ‘Coolsculpting’ freezes the fat cells, and then the body naturally eliminates those fat cells.” The procedure is perfect for men and women, takes very little time and typically allows the patients to get right back to work with little or no down time. For more information about Coolsculpting and all other surgical and non-surgical procedures contact The Layt Clinic on 07 5597 4100.

Midnight oasis Create your own desert storm with Charlie Brown’s latest collection.
The vibrancy and opulence of a luxurious desert oasis are brought to life in the sexy new spring/summer collection from designer Charlie Brown, starring the stunning Jodi Gordon. Decadent fabrics and embellishments are merged to create key pieces such as pants, peplum waist bodices and dresses while gilt jacquard fabrics create tailored structure. Add easy to wear shirts, cardigans and tunics in signature prints and you have the perfect mix for layering. Sequin kaftans, dresses and boleros in black and white stripes are ideal for cocktails by the pool. Geometric prints and fractured floral designs are also added to solid lilacs and purples in the form of asymmetrical dresses, palazzo pants and hi-lo tunics in natural cotton fabrics to create a sense of balance in the collection. This is the flair and playfulness for which Charlie Brown has become so well known. Go to charliebrown.com.au

a’S GUiDE FaSHiONiST TO RaCiNG Spring has sprung and with it women everywhere turn to that age old question – what to wear to the races? The annual spring racing carnivals are a chance for the fashionable femmes to get their outfits together and saddle up for not only the races but also Fashions on the Field. Like any contest, and rest assured it is a no holds barred competition complete with bitchy comments, snide asides and pre-event psych outs, there are rules of engagement. The value of many of the prizes means that the serious contenders have really done their homework. So here are some tips to help you win and hopefully emerge with your dignity and sense of humour intact. • This may seem obvious but do be on time for the registration. • Accessories hold the key so put some real thought into those little touches.
Calleija Lavender Jade Earrings with White diamonds $11,800, 07 5528 3666
Serene Wrist $69.95, Mimco, mimco.com.au
• Do a search on-line to see what the judges have chosen in previous years. Rarely does a completely over the top outfit, no matter how on trend it is, walk away with the big prize. • Good vintage, and it has to be in great condition, cleverly mixed in with something up to the minute is always a good chance.
Rocha Shoe $149.95, Nine West, 07 5532 1437 Noemi Silk Floral Long Dress $655, Max&Co, 07 5591 1494
• Your hat should be one of your biggest investments. Something cheap will simply not cut it. You must match it with your shoes and let it be the crowning glory to the outfit. • You can’t go wrong with a great pair of gloves. They are part of the little extras that will help to separate you from the crowd. It is amazing how many winners have gloves as part of their ensemble. • Understated is a good rule of thumb. Just because an outfit will look great in a nightclub after the races does not mean it will stand up to close scrutiny on course. • The same goes for fake tan and heavy make-up – wonderful in dim lighting but in the full glare of a daylight parade it will scream that you are a cast member from The Shire. • Shoes are invariably always closed toe. Strappy, flappy, open toe shoes are all well and good in their place but this is a contest and you are in it to win it. Make sure that there are no scuff marks or worn heels and soles. If possible add some stockings – they make your legs look better and add that touch of elegance.

Liposuction – is it for you? Dr John Flynn from Cosmedic and Skin Clinic discusses what’s really involved in this procedure. Many of us prefer a well-proportioned, balanced body, but no matter how hard we exercise or how rigidly we follow a healthy diet, this can prove to be a difficult task. “Liposuction can help improve body shape and define contours,” says Dr John Flynn. “It is a useful procedure to help restore balance, by permanently removing persistent fat from trouble-spots, whilst also improving skin tone, texture and tightness. Whilst it’s important to note that liposuction is not a solution for weight loss, it is a popular procedure designed to remove excess fat in those who have localised regions of fat impervious to diet and exercise. We can use liposuction to gently restore balance to the body, remove excess fat from where there is too much, and sometimes, adding it to areas in need of augmentation. “Techniques in liposuction have evolved considerably and today it is possible to remove relatively large volumes of fat with minimal downtime and discomfort for the patient. Liposuction involves the removal of fat via suction through a fine tube called a cannula. The standard approach involves the injection of a tumescent fluid as anaesthetic which may be supplemented by sedation or even general anaesthetic if desired. Recent advances in liposuction surgery have seen the advent of different energy sources being used to assist in dissolving and removing fat. These techniques include ultrasound-assisted liposuction, radiofrequencyassisted liposuction, power-assisted and laser-assisted liposuction. “The role of these energy sources is to dislodge and break up the fat so that it can be removed more easily,” explains Dr Flynn. “Reports of additional benefits such as a degree of skin tightening and reduced recovery time have been associated with different devices. At Cosmedic and Skin Clinic when superior skin tightening is desired, we feel the radio-frequency assisted liposuction is best suited using the BodyTITE system. This can also improve the tone and texture of the skin. This technique is designed to create heat under the skin for new collagen production and skin contraction while providing a decreased risk of post-liposuction skin laxity. Whilst many patients express concerns over the trauma of liposuction, Dr Flynn believes that, when performed by an experienced surgeon, liposuction is in fact a very gentle procedure. “Whilst it comes down to the surgeon’s technique, using a fine cannula further reduces the trauma on the patient,” he says. According to Dr Flynn, the ideal patient for liposuction has good quality skin, is not obese, and has localised areas of fat that need to be rearranged to achieve a more pleasing contour. “It’s also important the patient has a good understanding of the risks inherent to any surgery, and has realistic expectations,” he adds. “Determining the extent of liposuction around the abdomen, hip, bottom and thighs to achieve the right balance takes a significant deal of skill and experience.” While liposuction on the lower body tends to concentrate on the bottom, hips and thighs, Dr Flynn also performs liposculpture using very fine cannulae to access knees, calves and ankles, as well as the neck. With smaller fat collections or in patients too fearful of liposuction there is another option and that is the CoolSculpting or FAT FREEZE. This process progressively reduces fat in the target area and does not involve any sort of surgery. No needles and no need for anaesthetic, the patient can just get up and walk away. Amazingly this is a lunch time and then back to work process. To discuss liposuction or any procedure mentioned, why not call Cosmedic and Skin Clinic on 07 5555 7888 to find out more. 38

RECIPES Carluccio Frittata di Peperoni Sweet Pepper Omelette • Serves 4-6 This is one of the dishes that most reminds me of my youth and my mother’s cooking – it was a regular at picnics. The most important thing here is to cook the peppers first to achieve a more intense flavour. The sweet peppers, cooked like this but without the egg, can also serve as a side dish. 6 tbsp olive oil 900g red and yellow peppers, cut into strips 3 garlic cloves, sliced 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 12 eggs Salt and freshly ground black pepper Heat 5 tablespoons of the oil in a 25cm frying pan and fry the pepper strips, stirring from time to time, until the edges of the strips are caramelised, for about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and fry gently until it is cooked but not burnt. Add the vinegar and cook until evaporated. Remove from the heat, leaving the peppers in the pan. Beat the eggs in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Return the pepper frying pan to the heat, add the remaining oil and pour in the egg mixture. Cook, stirring a little for about 5 minutes with a spatula, until there is a crust on one side. With the help of a large plate or the lid of a large saucepan, invert the frittata. Slide it back into the frying pan, crust-side up. Cook for a further 5 minutes, until the other side has browned. Cut into wedges and serve hot or cold with salad. CONTALDO Torta di Riso al Profumo d ’Arancio Orange Rice Cake • Serves 8-10 Rice is sometimes used for making cakes in Italy and this is certainly true in the northern regions, where it is cultivated and plentiful. This cake is extremely nutritious and filling – perfect as a teatime snack for children home from school, or even for breakfast! 1.7 litres milk 1 vanilla pod Rind of ½ lemon 200g sugar 300g arborio rice 5 large eggs, separated 50ml orange liqueur 40g raisins Grated zest of 1 orange, plus extra for serving Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Grease and line a 24cm loosebottomed cake tin with greaseproof paper. Place the milk, vanilla pod, lemon rind and sugar in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Add the rice and simmer on a medium to low heat for about 20–25 minutes, until the rice is al dente and has absorbed the milk but still has a creamy consistency. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Discard the lemon rind. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks and liqueur until creamy. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff. Add the egg yolk mixture to the cooled rice, then fold in the stiffened egg whites, followed by the raisins and orange zest. Pour in the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 1 hour. Serve warm or cold, sprinkled with a little extra orange zest to finish. Spirts and Liqueurs Carluccio Italians love aperitif and digestif spirits, especially the latter. Most of them are commercially bottled – once by monasteries and pharmacies – but some can be made at home. For this you need pure 95 per cent (by volume) alcohol, which you can buy freely in Italy. After maceration with herbs, roots or other flavourings, it is diluted to drinkable strength. (You could use strong vodka or
schnapps.) I make nocino, with green walnuts and limoncello, and Sardinian mirto, made with myrtle. There are many liqueurs called amaro (bitter). The brandy of Italy is grappa, made from pomace (the pressed grape pulp, skins and stems left over from wine-making) and there are hundreds of varieties. It can be added to a morning espresso, a caffè corretto (‘corrected coffee’). CONTALDO Pappardelle con Speck e Porcini Pappardelle with Speck and Porcini • Serves 4 As a rule I don’t like to use cream in my cooking, but when I tested this recipe for this book, I have to admit I began to change my opinion. The combination of porcini, speck, thyme and cream is truly delicious. Speck is a cured pork meat originating from the Südtirol, or Alto Adige, which once belonged to Austria and is now part of Italy. Similar in appearance to prosciutto, with a slight smoky taste, it is only in recent years that it has been introduced to the rest of Italy and can now be bought in good Italian delis. 400g porcini 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper 300ml double cream 3 sprigs of thyme 120g speck, or prosciutto thinly sliced 350g pappardelle 50g Parmesan, freshly grated Clean the mushrooms with a damp cloth and thinly slice. Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the mushrooms and sauté for a few minutes until golden. Add the shallot and garlic and sauté for a minute. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the cream and thyme, lower the heat, add the speck and cook until the cream thickens slightly. In the meantime, cook the pasta in plenty of slightly salted water until al dente, drain and add to the sauce. Add the Parmesan, mix well, remove from the heat and serve immediately. labelmagazine.com.au

A simple statement but it is what you will receive when you dine at Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill at Broadbeach On The Park – the respect and consideration you would expect from one of Australia’s best restaurants. Apart from the fabulous food and exemplary service, Brand Director Steve Adams is equally as proud of the diversity and range of the wine, beer and cocktail menu. “We are very proud of the news from the 2012 Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year Awards. The Gold Coast received two glasses and Brisbane has the top accolade, three glasses. I also love the mixture we have for example in our ‘wine by the glass’ offerings. Between the group’s three venues (Broadbeach, Brisbane and Fiji) you will see an amazing range of varietals on offer. From South African oaked Chenin Blanc produced in the Cape of Good Hope area to Italy’s own Sardinian Vermentino white wines, we are constantly striving to broaden the palates of our diners. Whilst these wines are not commonly consumed it is the aim of Moo Moo to create an experience for guests that is far removed from the ordinary. We aim to educate our diners through our knowledge and the variety of flavours that are available. Our passion is the best food and wine and we want to share that passion and love for the world’s best produce and products.” Take a casual stroll through the red wine list and you will stumble upon marvellous little gems. Penfolds’ former chief wine maker, John Duval, has helped produce a mind blowingly good Chilean Cabernet or ask about the trendy new drink in Europe, the beautiful Rioja Riserva. “Again we have an amazing range of old and new, varietals known and unknown and a fabulous offering from the Penfolds Bin range,” says Steven. “Moo Moo’s have invested in the state of the

ood headli ner and a Harvey ll round Keitel re nice guy, cently din ed at Gla ss
Get up-to-date on all that’s Glass with Shanan Harmelin.
It’s certainly been an interesting time for me and the team at Glass over the past few months. We’ve been privileged to have Hollywood headliner Harvey Keitel dine with us on numerous occasions while he was in town shooting the film Fatal Honeymoon, based on the events surrounding the drowning death of Alabama woman Tina Watson on the Great Barrier Reef during her honeymoon in 2003. Harvey will be playing the role of Tina’s father, Tommy Thomas, and his fight for justice over the death of his daughter. A nicer more generous man you could ever hope to meet and he has become my new, all time favourite star. He is also a huge fan of our grilled New Zealand whole sole with Vongole, parsley and lemon butter. It’s is one of our most popular dishes and Harvey’s favourite. As the weather is warming up after the Gold Coast’s version of winter chill, we are introducing Moët Sundays. The famous French Champagne house of Moët and Chandon is renowned across the globe for the quality and taste of its product. A fine spring Sunday afternoon, a glass or two of Moët, live music and looking over the Broadwater – what more could you ask for on the Gold Coast? In July Glass celebrated its 3rd birthday with a swellegant party for 200 of our best friends who are customers or best customers who are friends. The time has certainly flown since Patrik Gennari and I opened the doors in 2009 with a party that is still talked about. We pride ourselves on providing a relaxed experience with great food and specialised service and judging by the feedback that is received on a daily basis, you the dining public are enjoying what Glass has to offer. Another very successful winemaker’s dinner was held in August. Wirra Wirra winemaker Paul Smith graced us with his presence and spoke during the night with great hilarity and knowledge about
58

the various wines and vintages on offer. If you would like to be part of any future winemaker’s evenings or other special events go to the website and sign up to receive the Glass newsletter. Glass has always been a popular haunt for celebrities but in the last few months we’ve become sports lover paradise with the range of famous sportspeople who have dined with us. Former world motorcycle champion Mick Doohan, Titans co-captain Scott Prince with his wife Kristy, the Titans WAGS also dined with us on a girl’s night out. The ex-chairman of the Geelong Football Club, Frank Costa and his wife Shirley has also enjoyed some Glass hospitality. Pardon me if I indulge in a little bit of bragging after Des Houghton from the Courier Mail visited and reviewed the restaurant. Sticking to the seafood section he and his party enjoyed the oysters, battered snapper, barramundi and Chinook salmon. “We couldn’t remember fish tasting any better. This was first-rate cooking all round,” he wrote. And his final verdict was ‘reeled in’. A new season, a new menu and executive chef David Pommier has worked his magic to produce a range of stunning new dishes. The changes are many but some to look out for are the shaved hot smoked swordfish with a carpaccio of confit octopus and warm French lentil salad or the oven baked four pin rack of lamb ...simply delicious. We are also having a truffle promotion with those earthy, mysterious and flavoursome morsels added to Jerusalem artichokes, lamb cutlets or roast quail. The difference they make to a dish has to be tasted to be believed so be sure to call in and ask. All our truffles are flown in fresh from Manjimup in Western Australia. May your glass always be half full,

MOTORING
bigger, better, bolder
aurion A big car for a big country, second generation Aurion sets new standards.
74
label magazine SPRing 2012
Clockwise from top: 2012 Toyota Aurion - Presara (front), Sportivo ZR6 (right), Sportivo SX6 (centre), Prodigy (rear left) and AT-X (rear right); the Aurion Presara interior; the powerful V6 engine bay.
Australians love their large cars. Trends and fashions may change but in a big country we like to explore the wide brown land in comfort, in a big car. It is an integral part of our psyche. Grand Motors in Southport are proud to announce the launch of the 3.5-litre V6 quad cam Toyota Aurion which completes the roll-out of Toyota’s portfolio of new locally made models. The substantially upgraded five-model Aurion range has been capped at a price beneath $50,000. It is Toyota’s locally made flagship and is being promoted as an attainable luxury car. The Aurion’s distinctive styling and occupant comfort levels provide clear differentiation and is the most powerful Toyota made in Australia. On the technical front everything has improved as well. It generates 200kW at 6200rpm on 91 octane fuel and in an era of increasing concern to all motorists it delivers the best fuel economy in the 3.5-litre class in the large passenger segment - six per cent better than the first generation. The environment hasn’t been forgotten either with tailpipe emissions reduced by eight per cent. It is also lighter and slightly larger than the vehicle it replaces. Panel fit in many instances has been reduced from tolerances of 5mm to just 3.5mm - the domain of a very few true luxury cars. The result of that is interior quietness will be a hallmark of second generation Aurion. Whisper quiet is a phrase often bandied about but under this new design interior audibility has been improved by more than 10 per cent. Apart from all those improvements the qualities always asked about are comfort and handling and this is what has the Grand Motors team really excited. Extensive local testing and development under Australian conditions has improved the ride and handling in all areas. The interior dimensions have been increased to provide even more legroom, and in particular, greater headroom for rear seat occupants. Most important of all, seats have increased in size while being made even more supportive. Other areas to have a make-over include the centre console storage area which is longer while the boot loading lip is lower to the ground for easier loading. Since its introduction in October 2006 Toyota Aurion has established an unshakeable presence in Australia’s large car market. It has won great loyalty from its many customers and received awards for its overall performance, especially its quality, comfort and outstanding value. The second generation Aurion will create a new wave of attraction. Again Toyota has understood the value component of the new release. Aurion’s recommended retail price has been capped beneath $50,000, and it has further improved its popular capped price logbook servicing proposition to four years/75,000km (whichever occurs first) up to the first five service periods. Aurion has become something of a hallmark for private buyers who do not see the need to enter the market above the luxury car tax threshold, but who still want distinctive luxury features. An integral part of the appeal of the new Aurion is the extensive consultation Toyota Australia has with its dealers, including Grand Motors Toyota, and their customers. Rewarding that emotional attachment to their motor vehicle of choice has resulted in a range of styling, technical and manufacturing improvements many as a result of the direct feedback received. To test drive this amazing new era sedan founded on the triple peaks of quality, durability and reliability get in touch with the team at Grand Motors Toyota and see for yourself what the large sedan for a new era is all about. Visit grandmotors.com.au for more details on the amazing new Aurion.
What a Grand FeelinG Buying a car is a big step; it’s important you trust the people you are dealing with. At Grand Motors Toyota Southport you can rely on the team to know their stuff, and deal with you honestly. Grand Motors Toyota have been one of the most respected names in the motor vehicle industry for over 60 years and they take their reputation very seriously. Grand Motors Toyota is a proud market leader, receiving some of the highest recognition awards in Sales, Service, Parts and Business Management, including the Presidents Award for Excellence in 1992 and 2004, the Knights Award for twelve consecutive years, and the Toyota Decade of Dominance Award 1990 to 1999. If you are in the market for a new or used car you owe it to yourself to give the team at Grand Motors Toyota a call. They have a range that is second to none, and they back it up with knowledge, experience and integrity.
