Captivating colour A piece of beautiful jewellery is a joy forever. Choosing the perfect stones and setting is an art form, it demands expert advice. The Gold Coast’s 5th Avenue Jewellers’ manager Nicole Suhrbier has many years of experience in jewellery. Her family has been involved in this glamorous industry for more than 30 years. Nicole says a piece of jewellery should be individual. “Each piece should express the personality of the wearer,” she says. “The possibilities extend far beyond traditional white diamonds. Coloured diamonds can complement an outfit, show a signature colour or represent a birthstone. “Diamonds come in various grades of white, as well as yellow, cognac, black, blue and the highly desirable but very rare pink. We now have in store an unique ring featuring a 1.04 carat intense pink diamond complemented by white diamonds. Another exclusive piece is a 13.90 carat white diamond ring,” Nicole says. She says young couples choosing engagement rings are often making their first major jewellery purchase. “Some understand the importance of colour and clarity, but there are many other factors that affect the look and value of a diamond,” Nicole says.

5th Avenue Jewellers is founded on quality and service. Natural precious stones are a speciality; the selection is sensational. Nicole says precious stones are available in every shade of the spectrum. “Sapphires come in a variety of natural colours from white to deep yellow, orange, pink, purple and green as well as the popular shades of blue. Rubies are from the same family of gemstones as sapphires but colours vary from a deep shade of claret to a bright red,” she says. “Garnet, topaz, tourmaline and quartz (including amethyst and citrine) are excellent examples of naturally coloured gemstones. “Jewellery designs may feature a single colour, a mix of colours or coloured stones set with diamonds. Jewellery designs featuring coloured stones are captivating and sophisticated,” Nicole says. 5th Avenue Jewellers has two gemmologists and registered valuers in store to advise clients on diamonds and other precious gems. Visit www.5thavenuejewellery.com.au or discuss colourful designs with Nicole at the elegant but informal 5th Avenue Jewellers on the ground floor of the Arcade at Pacific Fair.

Dr Craig Layt takes an educational approach to breast augmentation

Feminine

Some women believe their breasts are too small or unevenly sized. Some are selfconscious about their lack of curves. Highly qualified plastic surgeon Dr Craig Layt has years of experience in breast enhancement. Dr Layt says breast shape can change after pregnancy, weight loss or with the passing of the years. “Help is available and education is the key,” he says. “Every step of the procedure is explained during consultation but experience shows most patients forget some of the information. “Breast enlargement is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures so I decided to help patients learn more about the procedure by developing an informative DVD. The breast enlargement DVD is based on a consultation.

“Consultation is an important decision making process in any elective procedure. The DVD helps women understand the process. They can easily relate to the visual images and spoken explanation. They can watch the DVD several times and develop a clear understanding of the procedure,” Dr Layt says. He says written information from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the clinic are provided. “The written information is useful but the DVD allows patients to go through the experience, make notes, and prepare questions before their consultation,” he says. “The DVD is not designed to replace a surgery consultation. It is designed to inform patients about the procedure and make decisions. The DVD gives patients the information they need to ask questions on breast enlargement.

curves

“During consultation we establish the size and shape of the breast implants. We discuss the options of positioning the implant in front or behind the chest muscle, the incision used to place the implant, and the type of implant used. “The size after breast augmentation is a result of breast tissue and the implant. The same implant size gives different results in different women. It is important to assess each patient individually. “Proceeding with breast augmentation is a personal decision. Each patient has their own reasons for wanting the surgery. All patients should be provided with as much information as possible,” Dr Layt says. Visit www.drlayt.com or contact Dr Layt’s Benowa clinic for a copy of the breast augmentation DVD. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Sun safety Queensland’s high incidence of skin cancer could be reduced by the correct application of sunscreen. Research commissioned by Coppertone shows Queenslanders now spend less time in the sun because of concerns about sun exposure. The Coppertone Sun Safety Research Study was conducted by independent researchers StollzNow and sponsored by ScheringPlough. The research revealed most people fail to protect skin from incidental sun damage caused during daily activities.

Stylist to the stars Raymond Heremaia has spent most of his star studded career as a leading stylist on Rodeo Drive, Beverley Hills. Raymond has now returned to the Gold Coast and joined forces with the Artists United team. His specialities include styling, hair extensions and make up.

Skin experts say sunscreen should be applied every day and reapplied regularly. Damage can occur during a quick trip to the shops or while driving – the windscreen doesn’t protect the skin from the sun. The Coppertone ultraguard range offers affordable sun protection. The range includes broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection lotion with SPF 30+. The lotion has four hours of water resistance in a nonirritating formula. A range of Coppertone sun protection products is now available in pharmacies.

Results Rx

- a new generation of skin care

Confusing claims are made about skin care as new products enter the market. Dr Craig Layt’s beauty therapist Sophie Hickey explains the benefits of the brilliant and appropriately named Results Rx. Sophie says skin care products often give mixed messages. “Buzzwords abound, and new products enter the market daily, each promises remarkable result,” she says.

She says the term chiral correction may sound complex but it is understood by the skin.

“Often products do not communicate clearly with skin cells. The effects can include inflammation and irritation; this can give shortterm benefits but cause long-term damage.

“The Results Rx system enhances the skin care program. It gives results without causing damage,” Sophie says. “Results Rx treatment specific kits are the ideal way to buy to try.

“Results Rx is a scientifically produced range of products. The range covers everything from chemically correct peels to procedure specific skin care. The products speak the language of the skin,” Sophie says.

“I can recommend one of five conveniently boxed programs to suit most skin types. They include the Prep Program, Recovery Program, Factor Infusion, Clear Results, and Eternal Results Programs.

A Solution exfoliates, brightens and softens the skin.

N-Zyme gently exfoliates to give glowing skin without aggravation.

Acne Serum is designed to help with acne.

Pepoxide is a powerhouse serum formulated with the latest innovations in skin care.

Acne Mask is a potent mixture of cleansing clays and sulphur designed to treat acne. DNA Factor contains all the ingredients that minimise the signs of skin aging. Eye Doctor is a liquid crystal serum that replenishes damaged skin around the eyes. Gentle Clean removes makeup, dirt, oil, and impurities. ICC Intensive Care Concentrate is a rejuvenating formula for traumatised skin. Lightning Rx Brighten gently exfoliates and reduces the appearance of age spots, melasma, and hyper-pigmentation.

Protect Rx Protection stops sun damage; it is the first step in effective skin care. REDuce is a soothing complex of jojoba, rose hip seed oil, willow herb and vitamins.

“Results Rx peels show fantastic results. There are four specific peels in the range. Each one solves a different skin problem,” she says. Make an appointment to discuss skin care with Sophie at Dr Layt’s Benowa clinic. She will create a tailor made skin care program to suit individual skin types and lifestyle. The Result Rx range includes the following items. Professional advice is required when selecting the perfect combination.

RX Clean is the ultimate purifying cleanser. It exfoliates and washes away excess oils and impurities to give a fresher complexion. Pure Protection Rx is a full-spectrum, highquality, moisturising sunscreen for all skin types. UV Recovery is important when skin is regularly exposed to UV rays.

Refine Rx is a potent, skin-refinishing complex. It helps diminish fine lines and improve skin texture and colour while firming and smoothing.

X-Age firms and revitalises skin with soy biopeptides.

Reflect Rx is Sun Protection Factor 15 in a spray.

L’eau d’Issey by Ettore Sottsass and Issey Miyake embodies the exchange of creative ideas. In 1997, Issey Miyake invited internationally renowned Italian designer Ettore Sottsass to design a bottle for his fragrance. For technical reasons, the project was never completed. When Sottsass died in December 2007, Miyake honoured him by doing everything possible to produce the bottle the designer had conceived. Ettore Sottsass designed a transparent, ovoid-shaped glass bottle with tapered ends. Inside the bottle intertwining strands in fluorescent red, orange and pink add impact to the transparent glass. Collaboration between Issey Miyake, Beauté Prestige International and Barbara Radice-Sottsass has made it possible to produce this piece despite its technical complexity. Each bottle is a unique piece requiring more than 30 minutes of glass-blowing. Now the partly handmade bottle has been released in a numbered limited edition of 2000 pieces. An exceptional object deserves an exceptional fragrance. The creation is enhanced by L’eau d’Issey Eau de Parfum. Only five bottles of the $495 L’eau d’Issey Ettore Sottsass Edition EDP 100ml are available in Australia. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

It completes the trilogy that began with The One (a seductive oriental flora) and L’Eau the One (an airy eau de toilette interpretation that whispers rather than shouts). Rose the One is accompanied by three luxurious, scent-layering essentials to complete the mood of feminine indulgence. Add shower gel, body lotion, and shimmer powder for feminine perfection in a cloud of soft fragrance. Rose the One is forecast to be a favourite with summer brides and those in the first bloom of a new romance.

The latest expert treatments go more than skin deep to reveal beautifully smooth and even skin on the face and body.

Love the skin your in Laser Genesis Skin Therapy offers a painless and affordable solution to a range of skin problems. Rosacea – redness on cheeks, nose and other exposed areas – has until recently been difficult to treat. This condition is caused by dilated capillaries. Sometimes it is linked with acne and known as acne rosacea. It is unsightly and difficult to disguise but Laser Genesis skin therapy has the problem solved. Enlarged pores are another skin spoiler. Most experts agreed there was little that could be done to reduce enlarged pores but then came Laser Genesis. Laser Genesis Skin Therapy heralds the dawn of a new age in skin treatments.

This gentle treatment evens skin texture and colour, smooths fine lines, reduces the appearance of scars and gives a fresher more youthful appearance. It helps repair the damage caused by aging, lifestyle, sun exposure, acne, or genetics on the face, neck and body.

The treatment is painless, the warm laser is relaxing and there is no down time. Book in at lunch time and go back to work without missing a beat. Laser Genesis will not damage the surface of the skin. The laser handpiece is moved back and forth a couple of centimetres away from the skin.

Laser Genesis helps post operative scar healing as it stimulates collagen production. The skin therapy works by gently heating the tissue beneath the surface of the skin.

The treatment takes about an hour, it does not cause bruising or major irritations but the skin may be slightly red for two to five hours. Most conditions require four to six treatments. It is suitable for every skin type.

The warmth is absorbed by the pigments in the blood and stimulates collagen growth. Collagen determines the strength and elasticity of the skin. A collagen boost will improve skin flexibility and firmness to give a youthful, healthy complexion.

Slimming success The number of words written about diets probably equates to the number of kilos gained by people in the western world. Experts offer as many reasons for the failure of weight loss programs as they do new diets. The fact is there is no magic gadget and no easy way to lose weight. Humans are well-balanced machines designed to take in fuel and use it for energy. In the beginning, people gathered foods from the forest, caught fish from the sea and hunted animals to eat. This required effort; the bounty was shared among the tribe so there was little opportunity to overeat. Now we collect our food in any amount we want. Almost no effort is required to acquire the food and the supply is virtually endless. Few people now do hard physical work but many of still take in enough food to run a daily marathon. There is no mystery in weight gain, if we take in more food than we need it is stored as fat. Kilojoules and calories are a measure of fuel – think litres of petrol in the car. If the petrol tank is overfilled the fluid spills out, if a human is overfilled the surplus fuel converts to fat. Experts agree on one aspect of weight control, eat less and do more. The recommended exercise is easy, clamp the lips together tightly and turn the head rapidly from side to side. Get the picture? It means no more food. People who are really determined to lose weight will. Those who say they have tried everything and failed haven’t, they have looked at the idea and ignored the rules. Losing weight is not easy; it requires enormous self-discipline, the acceptance of an eating plan for life and regular exercise. People who are seriously overweight – 20 kilos or more than the recommended

Diet is the four-letter word most likely to upset most people. D is for depravation, i for insecurity, e for endurance and t for tedium. weight for their height (see Nutrition Australia’s guidelines) should start by making an appointment with their doctor. Most general practitioners are very sympathetic and they can suggest special programs involving drugs and medical procedures for people with a serious weight problems. If the loss of 15 kilos or less meets the recommended weight to height chart take the sensible steps to permanent weight loss. Start with a notepad and a kilojoule counter. Kilojoules and calories are different measurements of the same thing, the amount of energy or fuel in food. Calories are easier to count – one calorie is equal to 4.18 kilojoules, (100 calories equals 418 kilojoules). For one week eat as usual and write everything in the notebook – a page to a day – and add up the calories at the end of each day. Most people will find they eat three or more times the amount of food required to maintain their current weight. For example, men and women aged over 18 years and measuring 168cms – five-feet six inches – should weigh between 56 and 71 kilos. To maintain this weight they need to take in about 2000 calories or 8400 kilojoules a day. The count varies according to age – younger more, older less – and level of activity. To lose weight the intake must be lower than the maintenance level. Light activity – office or house work – burns four calories a minute, heavy work and vigorous exercise burns 10 calories per minute. To loose one pound or about half a kilo in fat 3500 calories must be burnt. Fats and simple carbohydrates (flour, pasta, bread, rice) have the most calories, fruits and vegetables the least and protein (meat, fish and eggs) fall somewhere in the middle. After the first week of establishing eating patterns and learning the calorie content of various foods start an eating plan of 2000 calories a day. Keep a balance of protein, meat, fish and eggs, add vegetables and fruits and leave a little over for a treat. A Mars Bar for example contains 271 calories. Planning meals to allow for something pleasurable helps ensure success. Add some regular exercise, a 20-minute walk or a swim each day will speed the weight loss process and help tone muscles. Gradually cut back the daily calorie allowance by 100 calories each week. Get down to 1200 to 1500 calories and stay on that level until the desired weight is a reality. Upping the exercise will help. A realistic goal is half a kilo (500 grams) a week. It will take about 30 weeks to lose 15 kilos but the plan – at the higher maintenance level of calories - will be entrenched for life. Health, looks and confidence will improve, the rewards are in the mirror and in the reaction of other people. It’s an old but true adage; nothing tastes as good as slim feels. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Face to Face Dr Terrance Scamp takes a look at the modern facelift “A rejuvenation program of non-surgical or surgical techniques (or a combination) is designed to suit the client’s face and lifestyle. Dr Scamp says the term facelift is often misused in reference to facial cosmetic surgery. “A facelift refers to a procedure designed to improve the jowl by elevating lower cheek tissues and improving the upper border of the jaw line,” he says. “People often expect a facelift to rejuvenate the neck. Usually the jowl is lifted and the neck tissues are restored to the original position as these two areas usually drop at the same time. “Rejuvenation of the brow is often performed at the same time. It takes away the sad, heavy look caused by weakening frown muscles. “This is now done with a key-hole technique so the long ear-to-ear scar is seldom used. “The term S lift is still sometimes used but the procedure is outdated because it pulled the skin. “Plastic surgeons now know skin is designed to stretch. A skin-only lift is short term and gives a too tight look.

“Modern facelifts work on the deeper muscle and sheath tissues. Strong sutures elevate the deeper tissues so the skin lift is more natural.

“Modern facial rejuvenation addresses this loss of volume with fat grafting or injectable products. These safe procedures enhance the rejuvenating process.

“Excess skin is removed and scars hidden around the ear. This gives finer scars, a natural look and longer lasting rejuvenation.

“Rejuvenating surgery must be backed by an ongoing skincare program and injectables.

“Aging is more than sagging skin. If tired, sun damaged skin is lifted the result is a better shaped face with tired, sun damaged skin.

“A facial rejuvenation consultation includes a thorough examination of facial tissue, sagging, volume loss, and skin aging. Individual aims and desires are discussed.

“The emphasis is now on skin rejuvenation. This may be through a simple skincare program featuring topical antioxidants, retinoids and products that fade the discolouration. It may extend to IPL or laser resurfacing.

“A rejuvenation program of non-surgical or surgical techniques (or a combination) is designed to suit the client’s face and lifestyle.

“Laser resurfacing technology has improved so scarring and loss of skin colour are no longer an issue. Finer controls and fractional resurfacing reduces the risk and healing time.

“Young people can keep their good looks by following a good skincare program. People should get to know their faces and take the best care they can,” Dr Scamp says. Visit www.esteemdayspa.com.au for more information on surgical and nonsurgical procedures.

“Apart from sagging and sun damage, the aging face is deflated. This means the loss of full round cheeks, strong jaw line, and rosebud lips. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

The best of the best

Stake out Moo Moo – there’s more to this menu than beef When Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill opened a little more than four years ago, owners Steven and Autumn Adams planned to create a dream restaurant. The couple has fulfilled the dream by taking Moo Moo to the top. This restaurant has won a record number of accolades including Queensland’s Best Steak, and Best Informal Dining Restaurant. Moo Moo has won the Gold Coast’s Best Steak Restaurant Award each year from 2006 to 2009.

Steven showed his skill in selecting the meat, Philip shows his unfaltering star quality in the treatment of the ingredients. Try a main course of pan-seared coral trout on fennel shavings. The flavour of the fresh caught fish is enhanced by the fennel and complemented by a warm Mediterraneanstyle vegetable salad spiced with cracked pepper and an aged balsamic dressing.

The stylish open plan interior design comfortable accommodates 140 people over two levels. The popular bar overlooks the park and the open kitchen is a conversation starter. Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill, Broadbeach on the Park, Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach (opposite Sofitel) serves lunch and dinner daily. Bookings are advised.

Indulge in a dessert of hot passionfruit and marshmallow soufflé with a pot of blood orange sauce and a serve of burnt caramel

Hangover helpers

People who party hearty tend to overestimate their stamina and often feel the worse for wear the next day. While moderation in all things is highly recommended there are occasions when common sense takes a holiday and that dear little devil Temptation takes a hold. Most people recognise the symptoms of over indulgence but everyone suffers differently. Some people’s hangovers start in the legs, they simply refuse to work. Others have SRS – spinning room syndrome – but the most common symptoms are feeling sick, having a thumping headache and an overwhelming desire to just cease being until you feel better. People with hangovers, commonly known as the walking dead, can either lie in bed feeling sorry for themselves or do something about the way they feel. If you go for the first one don’t expect sympathy from anyone, you won’t get

The first step to recovery is a drink – no, not a hair of the dog, that’s bad news but good old H2O – plain water. Sip don’t guzzle – you don’t want it back with extras – see how you feel after a few minutes. Keep drinking water and eat food. Big, greasy breakfasts work well for some people. Try bacon, sausage, eggs and toast with lots of coffee or tea. Pies and tomato sauce, soup, (especially the packet ones with lots of E numbers and MSG), beans on toast, hamburgers and curries have all cured people at some point. Another brilliant resuscitator is ice cream and lemonade, a giant ice cream and a litre bottle of fizzy drink produce enough sugar to energise the failing body and start the circulation moving. If it doesn’t work you will probably throw up and this can also help.

it and those members of the household who didn’t over indulge will become patronising pains-in-the-you-know-what.

Head for the medicine chest and take whatever vitamins you can find, multi-

vitamins, B, C and D will all help ease your pain. Keep drinking the water and attempt some movement. People who have never had a hangover will tell you to go for a run, (yeah, you know what you’ll tell them), but exercise does help. The most - only - bearable form of exercise is sex if you think you can manage it. Even if you can’t it could be fun trying and if you collapse in heap you are probably somewhere quite comfortable. If none of these hangover helpers work remember it is only a matter of time before you feel better. You are not likely to die of a hangover – wish though you might – and next time you think you’re invincible you will remember how you felt and think twice before going the whole hog. As it says on the packet, if symptoms persist see a doctor, people who have frequent hangovers may need help. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

This film brings Alice Sebold’s brilliant book to the big screen, it promises to be huge. Alice Sebold took murder, the supernatural, and family drama to new heights in her exceptionally well written book The Lovely Bones. Now DreamWorks Pictures in association with Film Four a Wingnut Films brings the story to the big screen. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens created the screenplay. Jackson directed and produced the film in conjunction with Fran Walsh, Carolynne Cunningham, and Aimée Peyronnet with executive producers Ken Kamins, Tessa Ross, and Jim Wilson. The cast features Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli, and Saoirse Ronan. The cast and the production team are no strangers to success, it is likely to be repeated as The Lovely Bones is bound to take a raft of accolades. The Lovely Bones tells the heart breaking story of a missing child. The highly respected Publishers Weekly described Sebold’s book as a small but far from minor miracle. “Sebold has taken a grim, media-exploited subject and fashioned from it a story that is both tragic and full of light and grace,” Publishers Weekly reported. The novel doesn’t waste time on introductions. Sebold’s narrator is the murdered girl Susie Salmon. Susie makes a chilling announcement in the second sentence.

“I was 14 when I was murdered on December 6, 1973,” she says. The story enfolds as Susie takes a shortcut through a cornfield. A neighbour lures her to his hideaway. Sebold’s description of the crime is chilling but never vulgar. The delicate balance between normal and horrific is maintained as she exposes the family’s grief Blood runs cold as the reader shares the distress of the shattered father. He hides his sadness in a never ending quest for evidence. Susie’s mother escapes ‘her ruined heart, in merciful adultery’. It is a chilling revelation of every parent’s worst fears combined with normal activities as lives flawed by tragedy must continue. The story shows the impact on a suburban community and how Susie watches over the events from heaven. Susie reminds us that life is sweet as she weighs her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family’s healing. It’s powerful stuff, never schmaltzy and always attention grabbing. The story is etched in the memory for ever. The film version will bring it to life and folklore again.

Label Catch the clever Ms Collins on Twitter at Jackie J Collins (someone stole her name) and see how to live life in the fast lane to the full. Jackie is youthful in appearance and attitude; she sounds young, and still gets a buzz from everything life has to offer.

Jackie has lived in Hollywood for more than 20 years. She sports Hollywood style in public but freely admits to preferring a more casual look. Jackie is still the girl next door but her neighbour is Al Pacino.

Chatting to Jackie about her latest blockbuster novel Poor Little Bitch Girl revealed her sense of humour, genuine interest in other people, and a strong sense of perspective. She is fascinated by other people’s celebrity but never in awe of it.

Despite her celebrity status Jackie believes she is seldom recognised. “Sunglasses and casual clothes keep me out of the spotlight,” she says. “There is now a group of celebrity reporters who take paparazzi to another level by hanging around restaurants, airports and anywhere else celebrities are likely be. They catch people out. That’s why we hear about so many scandals, there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.

Jackie says the latest buzz about celebrity babies sowed the seed for Poor Little Bitch Girl. “There is an outbreak of baby fever in Hollywood right now,” she says. “We watched and read about celebrity marriages but now the babies are in focus. That’s fine while they are babies but I wonder what will happen as the children grow up. “In Poor Little Bitch Girl, Annabelle Maestro, the teenage daughter of two movie stars, is sent off to New York. Celebrities don’t want to own up to getting old and the presence of an adult child is a constant reminder of their advancing years,” Jackie says. Annabelle forges a career as the madam of choice for discerning famous men. The story is based on real life scandals; Jackie reveals the truth but not the names. Collins characters have now romped through 27 books. They are always glamorous, superbly dressed, and strikingly individual. Her female characters are feminine and strong, these free spirits make their own choices. Jackie’s first book Married Lovers was banned in Australia and Boston because it turned the status quo of the dominant male, subservient female on its head. Today, Jackie’s books (particularly the Lucky Santangelo series) are read by a range of age groups.

“I like to relax with friends. I have a large group of friends who trust me. They are very open with me, they know I might use the story but would never reveal names. People who don’t know me tend to be a little guarded,” she says. Jackie’s refreshingly frank attitude covers every aspect of her life but she likes to keep her privacy and has little patience with pretence. “I recently appeared on a British television show with Katie Price (formerly known as Jordan).

Jackie Collins’ fame is founded on her talent for bringing the scandals of the rich and famous to life in print. This glamorous woman lives the high life but keeps her feet firmly on the ground. Catherine Taylor enjoys a chat with the famous writer.

Jackie says she receives messages from teenagers saying how much they enjoy the books. “I recently received a message from a 15-year-old girl whose mum had given her one of the Lucky books to read. “The girl had not read a book before and her mum was fed up with her constant texting and computer contact. The result is an ardent fan. I am fortunate, I get the mums, the teenagers, the grandmothers and the dads,” she says. English born Jackie was surrounded by famous people from birth. Her father Joe Collins was the senior partner in the Collins and Grade Agency. Joe helped Lew Grade (later Lord Grade) found the British television entertainment industry.

I turned up with my publicist and did my own hair and make up. Katie brought along an entourage. She had hair pieces, three sets of fake eyelashes and a lot of make up. I felt as if I wasn’t wearing any make up at all. “Many stars depend on an entourage of stylists. They look great on the red carpet but candid shots taken at the store or on the beach show they really do need help. The most natural looking and stunningly beautiful celebrities don’t need too much artifice. “At Whitney Houston’s recent new album launch I sat next to Halle Berry, she is stunning. Angelina Jolie and J Lo are up there at the top of the most beautiful list,” she says.

Jackie leads a very busy life and travels frequently. She used to keep a house in London but decided to sell it. “I hired someone to look after the London house but she didn’t do it. I found myself washing floors when I was supposed to be enjoying a visit to London. I sold the house and now stay in comfort at the Dorchester,” she says. While the excitement of the recently released Poor Little Bitch Girl is reaching a crescendo, Jackie is working on her next project. “I am making a film for DVD. It is set in Paris and I am now writing the script. Filming starts in Paris in January and the DVD will be released in May. It’s all very exciting,” she says.

Escape from the everyday with a good book

A good read

The Dating Detox by Gemma Burgess

The Other Family by Joanna Trollope

Piano Lessons by Anna Goldsworthy

An intriguing novel about inheritance and a tangled family. Chrissie knew Richie loved her, their three daughters, their house in Highgate and their happy, chaotic existence. Richie gave her everything, except a wedding ring. That belonged to Margaret. She and her son Scott never saw Richie, and had never met the three girls. They were his other family. After Richie’s death, their presence became impossible to ignore.

This remarkable memoir recalls the author’s first steps towards a life in music, from childhood piano lessons to international success as a concert pianist. She discovers passion, deals with disappointment, and learns about more than tone and technique. This story is about the getting of wisdom. The cast of characters includes Anna’s inspiring teacher Mrs Sivan who transforms what seems an impossible dream into reality.

Dating is a dangerous sport, so after her sixth successive failed relationship, romanticallychallenged 20-something Sass decides she’s had enough. Her mantra is no men, no break-ups, no problem. Her life changes and now everything seems to fall at her feet, especially men. Sass wonders if she will break the rules before the three-month dating sabbatical is up or will she ever roll the dice and play again.

The Story of Danny Dunn by Bryce Courtenay

The Feel Good Body by Anna-Louise Bouvier and Jennifer Fleming

Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved by Marie K. Long and Elgen M. Lonf

In the aftermath of the Great Depression few opportunities existed for working-class boys. Danny Dunn is 18, he has brains, looks, sporting ability and an easy charm. His parents run The Hero, a neighbourhood pub, and Danny is a local hero. His luck changes with the impact of war. This compelling and superbly written family saga spans three generations and times of change in Australia’s history.

Physiotherapist Anna-Louise Bouvier and Jennifer Fleming reveal how everybody should feel and how to deal with all those niggly complaints. It’s not all about the body - it’s about the mind as well. The humorous style and research, makes this a must-have book. Issues include headaches (how to know it’s not a brain tumour) nasty necks (don’t hold the phone between the ear and shoulder), lava bellies and more.

Now a major motion picture starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere, this book investigates the 1937 mystery of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance. Amelia was just days away from completing around-the-world flight when she disappeared. Her plane was never found, and rumours spread about what happened to her. The recent discovery of radio messages reveals the truth. She ran out of gas.

Lost in translation Conversation and communication can lead to misconceptions. These snippets show the lighter side of current chat. Pretty young thing one asks pretty young thing two if she likes opera. ‘I prefer The View’ was the answer. She thought she meant Oprah. British tourists were discussing the pros and cons of various political leaders within earshot of a senior citizen. The veteran found the opportunity to announce Guy Fawkes as her preference. A couple was discussing classical writers. She mentioned War and Peace. He said it would take him longer to read it that it took Tolstoy to write it. “How do you know Tolstoy wrote it?” she said. A local public relations company recently won a contract with a Parisian fashion house. The senior writer’s obvious distraction prompted a colleague to ask if she were okay. I’m sick of sorting though French letters was the response. A young mum commented on the impact of a neighbour’s virus. “They’ve spent most of the week in bed,” she said. Eight-year-old piped up “Bet they get a new baby soon.”

A recent trip to North Queensland revealed a new version of the language we call English. The laconic locals have a taste for punkin soup, a glass or 10 of cast (cask) wine, and a cup of chino (cappuccino). Perhaps Australia will follow Britain and develop a range of dialects. Ask a Yorkshireman to speak with a Geordie, try to translate from London to Liverpool or take a trip from Birmingham to Belfast. The language is the same, but the pronunciation is vastly varied. Only the brave will cross the border and enter Scotland. Australia is delightfully multi cultural. Few complain about people from other countries who struggle with the language but don’t get an Aussie started about New Zealanders. The conversation will continue long after the fush and chops have gone cold.

Feng shui Feng shui – pronounced fung shway - is the ancient art of using nature’s subtle energies to enhance harmony in every aspect of life. Relationships, health and finances all seem to benefit when the principles of feng shui are implemented. Sceptics call it superstitious nonsense; improvements are explained as coincidence or mind over matter. Believers disagree and large corporations are prepared to pour huge amounts of money into ensuring feng shui friendly principles are followed. In the last 20 years or so feng shui has become part of the mainstream of alternative guidance. References to the art date back 3500 years but the problems feng shui helps to solve are as much a part of the 21st century as they were of Ancient China. Feng Shui is all about life fulfilment, harmony and personal space. Families, individuals, and corporations can invest in the expertise of a feng shui master to capitalise on nature’s energy flow and encourage good luck. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

the principles of health, wealth and happiness

Simple instructions on the implementation of feng shui practises are hard to find as the principles are based on the Chinese horoscope as they apply to the individual or the group. A feng shui master will visit the home or workplace, assist in the design and décor of property and help make beneficial alterations to an existing property. Practical recommendations are made from a factual basis and solutions are reasonable. Feng shui practitioners say the path through life is influenced by the Cosmic Trinity, good deeds (karma), knowledge and hard work. Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Human Luck are the realms of the Cosmic Trinity governed by time, space and action. Heaven Luck is connected to the moment of birth. Earth Luck involves the residence or workplace. Human Luck is based on action, lack of action, deeds, and decisions. In accordance with most religions, feng shui practitioners believe doing the right thing reaps rewards and doing the wrong thing is detrimental to our lives now and hereafter.

The feng shui holistic approach looks beyond furniture placement, symbolic objects and popular folklore. Authenticity is rooted in mathematical formulas and theories. Through the application of Xuan Kong Feng Shui, we can see what each year holds in store but energy shifts on a monthly, weekly, daily, and hourly basis and these changes effect us all. A trained feng shui consultant can show how to manage luck or destiny, improve relationships, increase productivity, promote wellbeing, and invite success. Check the web for feng shui consultants. Some offer part time and correspondence courses in the art of feng shui. In the short term, help improve the flow of harmony and finance with a set of feng shui coins on red strings. Hang the coins in a prominent position, on the inside of the main door, near a business cash register, in the car or tuck them inside your wallet. Most people report unexplained financial gain or the solution to a major problem within a short time of purchasing the coins.

Smart, attractive and intelligent – Prius is purr-fect Toyota blazed the hybrid trail with the first release Prius, the third generation of this intelligent vehicle sets a new benchmark. Image conscious Gold Coasters are impressed by good looks but cost-effective, comfortable driving is essential. Toyota Prius delivers it all in one clever package. The style goes far beyond the logic of a hybrid fuel and electric driven vehicle. Label loved the high-tech feel and the spacious, comfortable interior. The eco-friendly, low fuel consumption is a bonus with plenty left in the tank after 350 kilometres. Standard Prius features include cruise control, keyless start, auto headlights, alarm and a multi-function steering wheel with a button press sound system. The trip computer shows the drive system operation while another display virtually projects the digital speedometer to the end of the bonnet.

The iTech model has a self-parking system, leather seats, climate-control airconditioning, LED headlights and a sunroof with solar panels. The solar panels power the ventilation system for a few minutes when the car is parked, perfect when dashing to the shops on a hot day. Intelligent features make this the ideal city car that loves a long ride. The steering is light but responsive; the brakes are gentle but efficient. The suspension cruises smoothly over speed humps and less than perfect country roads. Prius takes corners calmly in the suburbs or on the open road. Safety is one of the first considerations in a family car. The Prius has maximum fivestar Euro NCAP rating. Stability control and airbags are standard. Driver and passengers are protected with no less than seven airbags, (dual front, front side, curtain and driver’s knee bag). The iTech model features a reversing camera and pre-crash system.

The radar cruise control detects imminent impact, tightens the seatbelts and applies the brakes. Regenerative braking recharges the batteries and shuts down the petrol engine when not in use. This has added bonuses, sitting at traffic lights is not as irritating in a quiet car. The Prius has an 1.8-litre engine plus a 60kW electric motor. These combine to produce a respectable 100kW. Gentle starts use the electric motor, speed up and the engine comes to life with a gentle roar. Drive in electric motor (EV) mode for about a kilometre under 35 kmh. Other drive modes include normal, power and eco. Eco leans toward electric power, a bit lethargic on steep hills but great for fuel saving. Power leans towards the petrol engine and normal moves between the two.

Price $39,900 (base), $53,500 (i-Tech) plus on-road costs Engine: 1.8L 4-cyl and 60kW electric motor Power: 100kW Torque: 142Nm at 4000rpm Transmission/Driven Wheels: CVT, front-wheel-drive Kerb Weight:1420 kilograms
