LAC LA BICHE MISSION NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE 67453 Mission Road • Open 10 am to 5 pm daily from May long wekend to August. Closed Mondays. The Lac La Biche Mission was an important landmark of the fur trade era and the colonial age that followed. At one point it was known as l’entrepot du nord, “warehouse of the north,” and it had pride of place in a network that stretched across the Prairies and into the Northwest. Take a guided tour of this picturesque National Historic Site, complete with heritage buildings and informative exhibits. 780-623-3274 • laclabichemission.com

LAC LA BICHE MUSEUM 9910 101 Avenue, Lac La Biche Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from May to August (Monday-Friday only for remainder of year) Immerse yourself in the backstory of Lac La Biche Region, from prehistory to modern times. PLAMONDON DISTRICT MUSEUM 98 Avenue, Plamondon Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday during summer The hamlet of Plamondon is one of Alberta’s official bilingual settlements. Indigenous, French-Canadian, Russian Old Believer and other cultures have come together to create this unique corner of the region. Francophone pioneers settled in this beautiful valley in the early 1900s, learning to survive and prosper from local Métis families. Artifacts on display at Plamondon District Museum range from 20 years old to millions of years old! The museum also hosts local Indigenous artifacts and Indigenous genealogy records from 1810 to 2008, as well as pioneer family genealogies dating from 1908. 780-798-3193

MINI PARC HÉRITAGE PARK You’ve heard of strolling down memory lane. It’s a literal thing to do in this quaint park, filled with miniature replicas of Plamondon’s early buildings and homesteads that invite you to take a nostalgic walk through history. The shoulder-high structures, lovingly crafted and detailed, radiate a sense of place and community pride. See where Plamondon’s pioneer families, many of whose descendants still live in the community and stay true to their roots, hung their hats. Call 780-798-3478 or visit the Plamondon Festival Centre to request access.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES We respectfully acknowledge and recognize we are on Treaty 6 territory, which borders Treaty 8 and Treaty 10 territories and is also the homeland of the Métis people. These are the traditional, unceded, ancestral lands of First Nations peoples since time immemorial. ᐋᐧᐋᐧᐢᑫᓯᐃᐧᓵᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ / wâwâskesiwisâkahikan (Elk Lake) is the original nehiyaw (Cree) name of the area and what is known today as Lac La Biche. Beaver Lake Cree Nation and Heart Lake First Nation are home to many Indigenous peoples. The Métis people are descended from both Indigenous and European ancestors, and their culture reflects this blended heritage. Alberta is the only Canadian province with governmentrecognized Métis lands. Two of these Métis Settlements, Buffalo Lake and Kikino (which means “our home” in Cree), are found in Lac La Biche Region.

BEAVER LAKE PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA Sand, sun and surf are all on the itinerary. The vast sandy beach on the north shore of Beaver Lake beckons for a day of boating, fishing, sunbathing and swimming. Individual and group camping facilities are available for when the sun goes down. Adding to the convenience factor is the park’s location less than a five-minute drive outside the hamlet of Lac La Biche.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL PROVINCIAL PARK One of the most unique parks in the province sprawls across seven islands, protecting old-growth forests where hundreds of bird species are known to congregate. The main islands (accessible by a paved causeway) feature a variety of camping options, including cabins and tipis, sandy beaches and trails winding through a special ecosystem hundreds of years in the making.

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK AND PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA There are no delusions of grandeur here, because we have size on our side. A combined 590 square kilometres of protected area covers 11 major lakes, all connected by portages and trails through virgin wilderness. Mother Nature isn’t just your neighbour here – she’s your roommate. Lakeland is also an official Dark Sky Preserve and contains Alberta’s only backcountry paddling circuit (see next page).

CROW LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK Campers and paddlers who appreciate having space to share and room to breathe will find a lot to enjoy about Crow Lake. The park is relatively remote but still easily accessible from Highway 63, and campground amenities are basic. Motorized watercraft are not permitted on the lake, so it’s just you and the sounds of your paddle as you go to spot wildlife in the nearby Crow Lake Ecological Reserve. Visitor Guide 2022 | 37

LAKELAND CANOE CIRCUIT

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK’S SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE Live like a modern-day voyageur and experience the boreal backcountry like never before. Portage your canoe or kayak to Jackson Lake and embark on the Lakeland Canoe Circuit, Alberta’s only backcountry paddling route. The full flatwater circuit takes adventurous paddlers on a three-day, 40-kilometre journey across Jackson, Kinnaird, Blackett and McGuffin Lakes, to hidden waters and little pieces of paradise that land-based travellers don’t get to experience. You may wish to stay longer, though, as the primeval wilderness works its magic. Jackson Lake Staging Area is the preferred starting point for the circuit. It is located on Highway 663, a 30-minute drive east of Lac La Biche on the way to Touchwood Lake.

SKATE THE LAKE Lac La Biche Lake, between McArthur Park and Churchill Drive boat launch Lac La Biche Region’s namesake is also its largest natural ice rink. Take advantage of a cleared 1.5-kilometre skating trail, where the rink boards are the wooded shoreline and the distant horizon. For a natural skating experience with less distance, try the skating oval on the frozen pond in Alexander Hamilton Park.

This ice racing spectacle calls thrill-seekers with nerves of steel from across Western Canada to race cars, snowmobiles and more. You can even get behind the wheel yourself in a charity race. Other must-see sights include an aircraft fly-in, using the lake ice as a runway.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Under a blanket of snow, sometimes the only sound in the boreal forest is the whisper of skis over powder. Glide across the winter landscape, lose yourself in the movement and let the full-body exertion keep the chill at bay.

WHERE TO SKI Groomed ski trails can be found at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and Beaver Lake Provincial Recreation Area’s Group Use site. An extensive network of groomed trails, ranging from beginner-level to challenging, weaves through the woods at Shaw Lake Day Use Area in Lakeland Provincial Park (see opposite). Don’t have skis? Contact the Lac La Biche Ski Club (@LLBSkiClub on Facebook to arrange a ski rental during your visit. PLUS: Follow @LLBSkiClub on Facebook for community skiing events.

WILDERNESS EXPLORATION

Venture off the beaten path. Take the road less travelled. You’ve heard these sayings before. Lac La Biche Region is where you turn words into action.

QUAD & SNOWMOBILE TOURING Offroadrentals.ca • 780-623-8020 • offroadrentalsllb@gmail.com • 24 Nipewon Road, Lac La Biche Choose your own adventure – outdoor enthusiasts Norm and Rob at Off Road Rentals & Sales are ready to set you up for either a guided or self-guided quad or snowmobile excursion into the Lakeland wilds. The backcountry is their backyard, so ask for insider tips about trails, hidden gems and more.

OFF ROAD ADVENTURES Same contact information as above. Journey into isolation on the shores of Elinor Lake, and sleep in a wood-heated wall tent on the doorstep of the backcountry. Depending on the season, Off Road Adventures will take you to the remote site by boat, ATV or snowmobile.

OLD CONKLIN ROAD North of Lac La Biche Lake, the wilderness is open to all but adventured by few. Old Conklin Road winds through the sea of trees, deep into Crown land where backcountry camping and exploration await. The road is not an all-weather route, and the journey to Goodwin, Steepbank and Wappau Lakes can be an adventure in itself. Go far enough north and you may even spot endangered woodland caribou. Wherever you roam, treat the land and waters with the respect they deserve. Nature is sensitive. Remember that others have come before you and others will come after you.

52 | Lac La Biche Region

FAVOURITE TRAILS

On foot or on wheels, the Lac La Biche Region is yours to explore. Lakefront Walking Path: Park at McArthur Park and head west to the statue of David Thompson or east all the way to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Boardwalk Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park: Begin with a boardwalk and end with a beach, climbing and winding through centuries-old woods. Long Point Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park: Hike to the western tip of the park’s main island, admiring panoramic lake views and old-growth forest. ATV and Snowmobile Trails in Lakeland Provincial Park & Provincial Recreation Area: The protected primeval wilderness east of Lac La Biche has 140 kilometres of trails for off-road vehicles and four staging areas, giving access to remote backcountry camping and day-use sites. Visit albertaparks.ca for more information. Mosquito Lake Trail at Lakeland Provincial Park: Don’t let the name deter you. The longest hiking trail in the park connects Shaw, McGuffin and Jackson Lakes, with backcountry campsites along the way.

WATCHABLE WILDLIFE Part of Lac La Biche Region’s charm is just how close it brings you to nature. Remember to keep your distance from wild neighbours and avoid disturbing any wildlife you encounter.

BIRDWATCHING Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park alone provides habitat for more than 200 bird species. The rest of Lac La Biche Region isn’t far behind. Shorebirds and waterbirds like pelicans, herons and grebes are common, along with birds of prey like eagles, ospreys and owls. Note: Feeding wildlife encourages unnatural and potentially dangerous behaviour. Don’t do it.
