Cultural connections & AUTHENTIC adventures

LACLABICHEREGION.COM

This guide is your starting point to adventures in the Lac La Biche Region. We offer a perfect blend of rural beauty and urban convenience, with exceptional shopping and dining experiences to fuel your exploration. I’m excited to launch the Region’s new brand this year, which captures our uniqueness as a historical and cultural gathering place with access to untamed outdoor experiences.

I hope that the experiences you have here will be unforgettable, and that you’ll return for more soon.

Since time immemorial, First Nations peoples called the beauty of the area and its many islands and lakes home; first the Beaver, Sarcee, Sekani and Blackfoot peoples and later predominantly inhabited by the Chipewyan, Cree and Metis. The land serves as a teacher, a doctor, a mother and guide for all our stories, teachings and experiences as Indigenous People. May your time on this land be gifted with all good things for you and your family during your stay. Hiy Hiy.

Francophone pioneers settled in this beautiful valley in the early 1900s, learning to survive and prosper from local Métis families. Artifacts on display at Plamondon District Museum range from 20 years old to millions of years old! The museum also hosts local Indigenous artifacts and Indigenous genealogy records from 1810 to 2008, as well as pioneer family genealogies dating from 1908. 780-798-3193

It’s a literal thing to do in this quaint park, filled with miniature replicas of Plamondon’s early buildings and homesteads that invite you to take a nostalgic walk through history. The shoulder-high structures, lovingly crafted and detailed, radiate a sense of place and community pride. See where Plamondon’s pioneer families, many of whose descendants still live in the community and stay true to their roots, hung their hats.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

We respectfully acknowledge and recognize we are on Treaty 6 territory, which borders Treaty 8 and Treaty 10 territories and is also the homeland of the Métis people. These are the traditional, unceded, ancestral lands of First Nations peoples since time immemorial. ᐋᐧᐋᐧᐢᑫᓯᐃᐧᓵᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ / wâwâskesiwisâkahikan (Elk Lake) is the original nehiyaw (Cree) name of the area and what is known today as Lac La Biche. Beaver Lake Cree Nation and Heart Lake First Nation are home to many Indigenous peoples. The Métis people are descended from both Indigenous and European ancestors, and their culture reflects this blended heritage. Alberta is the only Canadian province with governmentrecognized Métis lands. Two of these Métis Settlements, Buffalo Lake and Kikino (which means “our home” in Cree), are found in Lac La Biche Region.

PROVINCIAL PARKS

Provincial Parks Bucket List

Birdwatch in Sir Winston Churchill, a recognized Bird Sanctuary Stargaze in Lakeland, an official Dark Sky Preserve Complete the Lakeland Canoe Circuit Watch the northern lights dance across the sky

BEAVER LAKE PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA

Sand, sun and surf are all on the itinerary. The vast sandy beach on the north shore of Beaver Lake beckons for a day of boating, fishing, sunbathing and swimming. Individual and group camping facilities are available for when the sun goes down. Adding to the convenience factor is the park’s location less than a five-minute drive outside the hamlet of Lac La Biche.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL PROVINCIAL PARK

One of the most unique parks in the province sprawls across seven islands, protecting old-growth forests where hundreds of bird species are known to congregate. The main islands (accessible by a paved causeway) feature a variety of camping options, including cabins and tipis, sandy beaches and trails winding through a special ecosystem hundreds of years in the making.

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK AND PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA

There are no delusions of grandeur here, because we have size on our side. A combined 590 square kilometres of protected area covers 11 major lakes, all connected by portages and trails through virgin wilderness. Mother Nature isn’t just your neighbour here – she’s your roommate. Lakeland is also an official Dark Sky Preserve and contains Alberta’s only backcountry paddling circuit (see next page).

CROW LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK

Campers and paddlers who appreciate having space to share and room to breathe will find a lot to enjoy about Crow Lake. The park is relatively remote but still easily accessible from Highway 63, and campground amenities are basic. Motorized watercraft are not permitted on the lake, so it’s just you and the sounds of your paddle as you go to spot wildlife in the nearby Crow Lake Ecological Reserve.

LAKELAND CANOE CIRCUIT

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK’S SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE

Live like a modern-day voyageur and experience the boreal backcountry like never before. Portage your canoe or kayak to Jackson Lake and embark on the Lakeland Canoe Circuit, Alberta’s only backcountry paddling route.

The full flatwater circuit takes adventurous paddlers on a three-day, 40-kilometre journey across Jackson, Kinnaird, Blackett and McGuffin Lakes, to hidden waters and little pieces of paradise that land-based travellers don’t get to experience. You may wish to stay longer, though, as the primeval wilderness works its magic.

Jackson Lake Staging Area is the preferred starting point for the circuit. It is located on Highway 663, a 30-minute drive east of Lac La Biche on the way to Touchwood Lake.

For a natural skating experience with less distance, try the skating oval on the frozen pond in Alexander Hamilton Park.

SNOWMOBILING

Put the boundless backcountry ahead of you; leave your cares and sled tracks behind you. The wilds of Lakeland Provincial Park & Provincial Recreation Area boast a combined 140 kilometres of trails to explore.

Take a guided snowmobile tour in the Lac La Biche Region with Off Road Adventures. See page 7.

SNOWSHOEING

Since time immemorial, Indigenous peoples have used snowshoes to travel across snowbound landscapes. They’re now used for wintertime trekking by people from all walks of life (no pun intended).

You can rent snowshoes from the Bold Center. Call (780) 623-3829 or visit the multiplex’s front desk for details.

WINTER FESTIVAL OF SPEED

February 25 & 26, 2023 • Lac la Biche (lake) Imagine putting the pedal to the metal and speeding across a frozen lake, sending rooster-tails of snow flying into the air. This ice racing spectacle calls thrill-seekers with nerves of steel from across Western Canada to race cars, snowmobiles and more. You can even get behind the wheel yourself in a charity race. Other must-see sights include an aircraft fly-in, using the lake ice as a runway. 2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the event.

CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

ATV RALLIES

Visit the community events calendar on laclabicheregion.com for info.

There’s nothing like hurtling down a woodland trail, bouncing over rocks and roots, seeing the trips whip past and feeling a fresh breeze on your (helmeted) face. ATV rallies are iconic country moments, bringing raw adrenaline, friendly competition and beautiful scenery together for truly wild rides.

HUNTING

Lac La Biche Region covers multiple Wildlife Management Units (WMU) including but not limited to 502, 503, 504, 512, 514, 515 and 841 (Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area).

Hunters are responsible for knowing which WMU they are hunting in, and the applicable seasons and regulations.

Hunters are also responsible for obtaining permission to hunt on any lands except Crown lands. Land ownership maps for parcels within Lac La Biche County boundaries may be obtained from the County itself for a nominal fee (call 780-623-1747 or email main.office@laclabichecounty.com).

WILDERNESS EXPLORATION

Venture off the beaten path. Take the road less travelled. You’ve heard these sayings before. Lac La Biche Region is where you turn words into action.

Choose your own adventure – outdoor enthusiasts Norm and Rob at Off Road Rentals & Sales are ready to set you up for either a guided or self-guided quad or snowmobile excursion. The backcountry is their backyard, so ask for insider tips about trails, hidden gems and more.

OFF ROAD ADVENTURES

Same contact information as above. Journey into isolation on the shores of Elinor Lake, and sleep in a wood-heated wall tent on the doorstep of the backcountry. Depending on the season, Off Road Adventures will take you to the remote site by boat, ATV or snowmobile

OLD CONKLIN ROAD

North of Lac La Biche Lake, the wilderness is open to all but adventured by few. Old Conklin Road winds through the sea of trees, deep into Crown land where backcountry camping and exploration await.

The road is not an all-weather route, and the journey to Goodwin, Steepbank and Wappau Lakes can be an adventure in itself. Go far enough north and you may even spot endangered woodland caribou.

Wherever you roam, treat the land and waters with the respect they deserve. Nature is sensitive. Remember that others have come before you and others will come after you.

WATCHABLE WILDLIFE

Part of Lac La Biche Region’s charm is just how close it brings you to nature. Remember to keep your distance from wild neighbours and avoid disturbing any wildlife you encounter.

BIRDWATCHING

The Lac La Biche Region is a bird watcher’s paradise.

Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park alone provides habitat for more than 200 bird species. The rest of Lac La Biche Region isn’t far behind. Shorebirds and waterbirds like pelicans, herons and grebes are common, along with birds of prey like eagles, ospreys and owls.

Note:

53
Feeding wildlife encourages unnatural and potentially dangerous behaviour. Don’t do it.
