LA CARTA | THE LETTER Un nuevo año en nuestro calendario para seguir escribiendo la historia de nuestras vidas y abrirnos a nuevas experiencias y aprendizajes. Un nuevo año donde veremos qué va a pasar con América Latina después de las manifestaciones sociales y, un año electoral para Estados Unidos, se elige en el mes de noviembre al próximo Presidente. Un año para dejar de destruir nuestro planeta con el uso de plástico y poliestireno expandido (material de las cajas para llevar la comida de los restaurantes). Es momento de implementar en nuestros hogares y espacios de trabajo prácticas conscientes de ayuda al medio ambiente como el reciclaje, eliminar el correo basura y comprar conscientemente. En palabras de nuestra astróloga Eliana de @Astrowoman_: “2020 sin dudas es TRANSFORMACIÓN. Es el año que marcará un antes y un después. Es el inicio de un GRAN CAMBIO; después de él las cosas ya no serán iguales. Los modelos políticos, económicos y sociales se transformarán de manera radical. 2020, será la hora de la VERDAD. Se nos exigirá hacernos cargo y asumir responsabilidades por nuestros actos. 2020 es un año para luchar por lo que se quiere, aun haciéndole frente a las restricciones. Los premios serán de los que resistan. Es un año de consolidación. Y se la llevarán más fácil quienes no decaigan ante las frustraciones, quienes tengan un propósito claro y hagan lo que se deba hacer por alcanzarlo sin recurrir a atajos. A nivel personal: debemos dejar de victimizarnos, de culpar al afuera, a otros: gobernantes, jefes, etc. Será un nuevo comienzo, una nueva realidad desde quien realmente somos. 14 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • ENERO 2020
A new year in our calendar to continue writing the history of our lives and open ourselves to new experiences and lessons. A new year where we will see what will happen to Latin America after the social protests and an election year for the United States in which the next President will be elected in November. A year to stop destroying our planet with the use of plastic and expanded polystyrene (the material of to-go boxes from restaurants). It is time to implement conscious practices within our homes and workplaces in order to help the environment, such as recycling, eliminating junk mail and buying things consciously. In the words of our astrologer Eliana de @Astrowoman_: “2020 is undoubtedly a year of TRANSFORMATION. It is the year that will mark a before and after. It is the beginning of GREAT CHANGE; after this year, things will no longer be the same. Political, economic and social models will be radically transformed. 2020 will be the hour of TRUTH. We will be required to take charge and take responsibility for our actions. 2020 is a year to fight for what we want, even when faced with restrictions. The rewards will be for those who stand firm. It is a year of consolidation. And it will be easier for those who do not give up in the face of frustration, those who have a clear purpose and do what must be done to achieve their goals without resorting to shortcuts. On a personal level: we must stop victimizing ourselves, blaming others: rulers, bosses, etc. It will be a new beginning, a new reality of who we really are. We will be asked to get rid of what limits us and

PUMASHHGIRLS UN EJEMPLO DE AMOR POR EL FÚTBOL AN EXAMPLE OF A LOVE FOR SOCCER Elizabeth Gonzales, la fundadora y entrenadora de Pumashhgirls, originaria de México le contó a la Isla Magazine cómo nació este proyecto. Ellas tenían el sueño de ingresar al equipo de soccer de la escuela, desafortunadamente en no calificaron en ese momento. Una de ellas es mi hija, quien llegó muy decepcionada y triste porque no había podido entrar al equipo y esa misma experiencia la vivieron otras niñas. Uno como madre se siente mal porque mi hija no había alcanzado en ese momento la meta que ella quería; vivir esa situación me empujó a crear el proyecto de las Pumashhgirls. Además que a mi familia y a mí nos gusta el fútbol, entonces fue una gran oportunidad, creo que es uno de los deportes más bonitos. Elizabeth Gonzales, the founder and coach of Pumashhgirls originally from Mexico, told La Isla Magazine how this project was born. This group of girls had the dream of joining the school soccer team, unfortunately they didn't qualify at that time. One of them is my daughter. She arrived home very disappointed and sad because she had not been accepted to join the team. They said she didn’t qualify. That same experience was lived by other girls. As a mother, I felt bad because my daughter had not reached the goal she wanted at that time. That experience pushed me to create the Pumashhgirls Project. In addition to this experience, my family and I like soccer, so it was a great opportunity and perfect fit. I think soccer is one of the most beautiful sports. I started by asking my daughter about the girls that I had seen that were rejected yet they played well. They all have the passion, the qualities, the dedication and the enthusiasm to play soccer. We were able to get a variety of the girls together in order to form a team. The rejection did not put them down or stop them.

AHORA QUEREMOS AMPLIAR EL EQUIPO. Me siento muy feliz y las niñas también con lo que se ha logrado. En la Florida se practica mucho el 3 vs 3 donde juegan tres personas contra tres personas, no hay arquero y se hacen goles. Es un juego supremamente rápido. Esta es la modalidad de las Pumashhgirls.

NOW WE WANT TO EXPAND THE TEAM. The girls and I feel very happy with what has been achieved. In Florida, 3 vs 3 is practiced a lot where three people play against three people, there is no goalkeeper and goals are scored. It is an extremely fast game. This is the way the Pumashhgirls play. We started with four girls, we only had the chance to do one substitution. Sometimes they had to play without being able to make any changes or take any breaks.
Tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en el Campeonato Nacional de ESPN en los complejos de Disney, se conoce como Disney 3V3 Soccer Championship en Julio de 2019. Fuimos los únicos de Carolina del Sur participando en este campeonato nacional donde asisten equipos buenísimos y la competencia es dura. Pero, ¡Las niñas se trajeron el primer lugar!
We had the opportunity to participate in the National ESPN championship at the Disney Complex, known as the Disney 3V3 Soccer Championship in July 2019. We were the only ones from South Carolina participating in this national championship where great teams participate and the competition is tough. But, the girls brought home First Place!

Año nuevo, ¿vida nueva? En las festividades de fin de año, una de las tradiciones que más se llevan a cabo es la de elaborar una lista de propósitos a cumplir en el nuevo año que inicia. Algunas personas escriben sus propósitos y a la media noche del 31 de diciembre, queman su papelito con toda la fé de que el en el nuevo año iniciarán una nueva vida. Otras simplemente se hacen a sí mismos la promesa de que en este año sí cumplirán lo que se prometieron el año anterior. Y así, diversas tradiciones que a la final tienen el mismo propósito de plantear mejoras para el nuevo año que empieza. CUANDO REALIZAMOS ESTOS RITUALES DE FIN DE AÑO, TODOS TENEMOS LA SINCERA INTENCIÓN DE PLANTEAR CAMBIOS EN DIVERSOS ASPECTOS DE NUESTRA VIDA: bajar de peso, ir al gimnasio, empezar un curso, ahorrar dinero, viajar, cambiar hábitos, etc. Sin embargo, todo el ánimo que teníamos al elaborar nuestras intenciones y al empezar el año desde Enero con la mejor actitud, se va evaporando al transcurrir los días y vamos cayendo en la rutina desgastante del día a día, olvidando aquello que queríamos mejorar y por lo general, terminamos el año y la mayoría de propósitos que tuvimos no se cumplieron. Some people write their resolutions down on paper and at midnight on December 31, they burn that paper with full confidence that in the new year they will start a new life. Others simply make themselves the promise that they will complete those resolutions during the upcoming new year. Various traditions exist which, in the end, have the same purpose of making improvements for the new year. WHEN WE PERFORM THESE RITUALS AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WE ALL HAVE THE SINCERE INTENTION TO PROPOSE CHANGES IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF OUR LIVES: lose weight, go to the gym, start a course of study, save money, travel, change habits, etc. However, all the courage and positive attitudes we had towards developing our intentions at the beginning of the year in January evaporate as the days go by, and we fall into the exhausting routine of

Si realmente deseamos iniciar año nuevo, vida nueva, debemos dejar de hacer una lista de propósitos a fin de año simplemente porque el año está finalizando. En realidad, estos propósitos se pueden hacer en cualquier momento y circunstancia del año. Lo importante es que seamos sinceros con nosotros mismos y tengamos la suficiente claridad sobre los aspectos que queremos mejorar, no solo los de la vida material sino también aquellos que alojamos en nuestro corazón. Pero sobre todo lo más importante es que tengamos compromiso con nosotros mismos para poder cambiar o mejorar, día a día, mes a mes, año a año. Esta es una labor diaria, un acto de amor propio que dejará de ser solo una tradición de fin de año para convertirse en nuestro estilo de vida. Así que no te dejes coger del tiempo, aprovecha la energía de este nuevo año que empieza y ve tras tus sueños. El único impedimento para no cumplir lo que deseas eres tú mismo.

This is a daily job, an act of selflove that will cease to be just a year-end tradition and will become our way of life. So do not let the time get away from you; take advantage of the energy of this new year as it begins and go after your dreams. The only thing getting in the way of what you want is yourself. I have the privilege of being born in the capital of Colombia, in the country of magical realism, where you can breathe in culture, music, gastronomy and joy. Desde la Patagonia a través de la frontera de los Estados Unidos con México, hasta Canadá, hay una angustia. El aumento de los migrantes que intentan encontrar una vida mejor en Norte América es una señal de todos los problemas sociales que enfronta esta región.
From Patagonia through the border of the United States with Mexico, to Canada, there is a distress throughout Central & South America. The increase in migrants trying to find a better life in North America is a sign of all the social problems that this region is facing.
Uno de los temas relevantes en la agenda de Estados Unidos en los últimos años son sus problemas de migración, un reflejo de la desestabilización social de América Latina durante esta última década, las manifestaciones sociales, las crisis económicas, la inseguridad y la falta de oportunidades son características comunes que se aprecian.

2019 was a leading year of different events typical of the reflection of this reality, mainly the institutional instability of some nations, some more acute than others where the question arises: What is the reality of Central America and South America now? Alicia Bárcena executive secretary of ECLAC, (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations, states: "The region is going through a very bad time, there is a generalized and synchronized slowdown".

Por ejemplo, hay un bajo desempeño económico principalmente de países como Venezuela, Haití y Argentina; donde la pobreza ha crecido. Chile fue un signo de asombro de cómo una nación puede caer en cuestión de semanas, una serie de protestas sociales mezcladas con vandalismo, desestabilizaron la percepción de inversión y crecimiento, en un país que siempre ha sido uno de los más fuertes en el cono sur. La desestabilización de Chile ha generado una ola de situaciones similares en Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Perú y Argentina, con muchos episodios de disturbios civiles que consisten en marchas estudiantiles que piden una mejor educación y oportunidades de trabajo; muestras de la preocupación de analizar y resolver muchas de estas dificultades. Chile was a sign of astonishment of how a nation can fall in a matter of weeks, a series of social protests mixed with vandalism, destabilized the perception of investment and growth, in a country that has always been one of the strongest in South America. Chile’s destabilization has generated a ripple of similar situations in Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. Throughout the continent we have seen replicas of similar situations, with many episodes of civil unrest consisting of student marches calling for better education and work opportunities; show that there is a concern to analyze and solve many of these difficulties. There is a theory that shows that this destabilization is a result of the work of the Sao Paulo Forum, which was born in Brazil in 1990 founded by the workers' party and groups of the political organizations of the extreme left, as a product of its agenda set to establish Socialist political models in all Latin American nations. It is openly known that this forum has been funded by the Venezuelan government since the era of Hugo Chavez. On the other hand, we saw the people in JANUARY 2020 • LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM 59

Bolivia demostró que está buscando una nueva dirección democrática para avanzar en el siglo XXI al igual que gran parte del resto de Latinoamérica. La verdadera pregunta entonces debe hacerse; ¿en qué dirección se mueve la balanza política latinoamericana y cuál es la ideal, socialista o demócrata? La realidad es que América Latina está atravesando su nivel más bajo de desarrollo y crecimiento en materia económica y social en los últimos 40 años. No existe una articulación real que promueva el trabajo conjunto entre las naciones. La realidad es lo contrario, una América Latina que se divide todos los días con la corrupción masiva convirtiéndose en una tierra estancada. Los desafíos son grandes y aunque el futuro no sea el más positivo. Algunas naciones culpan a los Estados Unidos por su situación, pero los fundamentos se pierden cuando se observa que muchos de los problemas sociales y culturales de los países latinos radican en la corrupción, producto de la falta de conciencia sobre el valor de lo que es público para administrar bien los dineros productos de la recaudación de sus impuestos, base del desarrollo de negocios, emprendimiento, educación, salud y mucho más.

The real question then must be asked; in what direction will these countries choose to go….Democratic or Socialist? The reality is that Latin America is going through its lowest level of development and growth in economic and social matters in the last 40 years. There is no real articulation that promotes joint work between nations. The reality is the contrary, a Latin America dividing individually every day with mass corruption turning into a stagnant waste land. The challenges are great and even though the future is not the most positive. Some nations blame the United States for their situation, but the fundamentals are lost when it is observed that many of the social and cultural problems of Latin countries lie in corruption, product of the lack of awareness in the value of the public to grow its tax base through the development of business, entrepreneurship, education, health and so much more.
