What’s To Come

Have you ever looked up at a night’s sky to see stars so brilliant they take your breath away? I have a vivid memory of camping at Young State Park in Boyne City, Michigan, and seeing the brightest sky, lit up like a Christmas tree, making Lake Charlevoix sparkle. So when Michigan announced its newest Dark Sky Park, located at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, we had to check it out (p. 44). Visit this Upper Peninsula natural wonder, one of three Dark Sky Parks in Michigan, to relax under a blanket of stars.

Another place to slow down is in Algoma and Kewaunee, Wisconsin (p. 48). These small towns, just south of popular Door County, have much to offer, including travel-worthy sportfishing, Wisconsin’s oldest winery (von Stiehl Winery), a variety of dining options from casual to classy, and fun summertime events. Plan a cruise to these towns this spring!

I have lived in Toledo all of my 60 years and when I read that someone would recommend Toledo as a Port of Call in its present condition (Nov./Dec. 2022 issue of Lakeland Boating) I was amazed and shocked. I started boating by fishing around Toledo in the 70s, and when time came to explore the area more in the 80s, there were plenty of docks and things to do along the awesome Maumee River. Starting out on the lake, boaters would see the Toledo Harbor Light, and while headed south in the shipping channel, you could see the shipyards along the port side; the freighters in there were a beautiful sight. The world’s largest crane stood proud. As you cruised farther south towards downtown, there were marinas where service was available. As boaters came to the Cherry Street Bridge, they entered downtown and could call Portside and get a dock for an hour or a week! The entertainment, restaurants and sights were then enough to make every age and interest satisfied. Weekends were impossible to get a dock because every Friday night was “Party in the Park,” where various big bands and singers entertained and boaters anchored to listen. The restaurants were kid friendly, as we took ours every time we went. This was the way Toledo used to be.

Today, a visitor would still start their cruise in at the Harbor Light, and following the channel they will cruise past freighters in for repair or unloading, but the old shipyards sit bare, as the cranes are no longer there. As you continue, the only riverfront marina (Brenner) for service will be on the starboard side, but be careful entering as unmarked pilings make entering a chore. Cruising on, boaters will go under the I-280 Glass City Bridge that is a beautiful site and then you will come to the only thing I think would bring others here: The National Museum of the Great Lakes. There are the free docks mentioned, but don’t expect any help using these docks. As you continue south and pass downtown you will see beautiful buildings and, on the starboard side, many places where docks, entertainment and restaurants used to be. There is the Imagination Station Science Museum, and if you are a science buff, contact them for docking information because I have not been able to find any. On the port side, past the MLK Bridge, is a row of restaurants. In order to dine, you must pay to tie up. We were told the prices were by the hour. In my opinion, this area is not for children. As you continue on, you will come to I-75 bridge, the grain silos and mural, before you enter Rossford, Ohio. This is the way Toledo is today.

Toledo is a city of diversity, but they have done nothing to bring boaters, fishermen or water lovers here. Dockage is available at the named yacht clubs but you must be a club member — what about the average family boater? Toledo could be a great city for outdoorsmen, but with only Cullins Park having a public launch and the city pulling the docks by mid-October, we have fall anglers and hunters that must travel to surrounding cities.

In closing, I want people from outside Toledo to know the real Toledo and what it had but was taken away from us. In my opinion, this is not a boater-friendly town!

Organization Aims to Make Apostle Islands More Accessible

The nonprofit group Friends of the Apostle Islands has recently launched its campaign, Access for All, to make Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands National Lakeshore accessible to all visitors. The group aims to raise $325,000, with matching funds by the National Park Service, to add ramps, handrails and more to the park to make it easier to experience. The money raised will be used to build a 520-foot gently sloping ramp that leads to a scenic overlook at Meyers Beach. The group has already completed the following projects: Adding a wheelchair-accessible overlook on the dock at Little Sand Bay; creating accessible campsites, restrooms and more than a mile of boardwalk on Sand Island; making an accessible amphitheater and campsite on Stockton Island; and more. Herb Eldean Honored With MBIA Lifetime Achievement Award

Beneteau’s impressive new electric-powered Oceanis 30.1 and First 44 premiered at the Salon Nautic de Paris in December 2022, advancing Beneteau’s strategy focused on producing models that promote carbon-reduction and eco-friendliness.

Chicago native and MBIA Hall of Fame inductee Herb Eldean of Eldean Shipyard in Macatawa, Michigan, was posthumously awarded the 2022 MBIA Ray L. Underwood Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the recreational boating industry throughout his lifetime. He was honored at the Recreational Boating Educational Conference in Grand Rapids last November.

“Because of [his] longevity, dedication and personal integrity, Herb Eldean earned wide recognition within our industry and the respect of [his] professional peers,” says MBIA Chairman Tom DenHerder. “The MBIA Board voted unanimously to honor Herb with this, one of our most prestigious awards.”

From his youth on the Chicago waterfront, Eldean grew up fishing, sailing and helping his father operate the Monroe Street Harbor. He and his brother purchased Eldean Shipyard & Yacht Sales in 1973, and led it to earn the “Marina of the Year” award in 1995. Throughout the years, Eldean encouraged learning and education and was an avid proponent of the boating industry.

Longtime Cruisers Yachts owner Kenneth Charles (K.C.) Stock passed away on November 28, 2022, leaving a long legacy of entrepreneurship and community involvement. Born April 6, 1938 in Oconto, Wisconsin, Stock was an entrepreneur from an early age, purchasing his first contractor yard, Stock Lumber, in 1971. After exponential growth, he later purchased his hometown boat company Cruisers Yachts, investing in the company and community to promote local growth.

“The one statement that best describes K.C., is his love and commitment to the employees at Cruisers Yachts,” says Mark Pedersen, president of Cruisers Yachts. “Anytime he would visit, he would first ask how many team members were working and then walked the floor to visit with them.” It’s in keeping with one of K.C.’s favorite quotes: “You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with.”

Cruisers Yachts enjoyed tremendous growth over its 28 years with Stock at the helm, and in May of 2021, he sold the company to MarineMax, Inc. with the promise to keep the company and community thriving. Throughout his life, Stock prioritized giving back to the community, and started the K.C. Stock Foundation to help those in need, making the lead gift to start the Children’s Hospital in Northeastern Wisconsin at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.

Lyman-Morse Launches New Hood 35 LM

Following the successful launch of the hardtop express Hood 35 by LymanMorse, construction of the flybridge version is now underway at the company’s facility in Thomaston, Maine. The anticipated launch date is spring 2023.

The Hood 35 LM series delivers the best of a semi-custom platform, available in hardtop, flybridge and soft-top options. Ingenity Partners With Hacker-Craft to Provide Electric Drivetrains

Ingenity Electric, an innovative electric boat company under the Correct Craft family of brands, will provide and install all-electric drivetrains in new Hacker-Craft Boats.

The first Ingenity-powered boat, the Hacker-Craft 27-foot Special Sport, was introduced at the 2022 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show. New Lake Michigan Trail Connects Chicago to New Buffalo

Smokestack from Phoenix Shipwreck Found in Lake Michigan

More than 175 years after the sinking of the SS Phoenix, one of the deadliest shipwrecks on Lake Michigan, the ship’s smokestack was found at the bottom of the lake just off the coast of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Dutch podcaster Joske Meerdink and filmmaker Diny van Hoften visited the Sheboygan area in July 2022 to research and tell the story of the Phoenix, which sank on November 21, 1847 while carrying over 225 passengers, including 175 Dutch immigrants who planned on settling in the area. The ship burned and sank after a fire broke out onboard, and fewer than 45 passengers survived.

Meerdink and local shipwreck diving expert Steve Radovan enlisted the help of Tamara Thomsen, archaeologist at Wisconsin Historical Society and diving team member, who found the smokestack.

Meerdink’s podcast and Van Hoften’s documentary, both called “De Ramp met de Phoenix,” which translates to “The Phoenix Disaster,” are available at GLD.NL/PHOENIX.

New Boat Brand, Phenom Yachts, Launched at FLIBS

Imagine riding your bike safely from Chicago all the way to Michigan. Thanks to a $17.8 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant, combined with fundraising efforts, this dream is becoming a reality. Called the Marquette Greenway Trail, the 58-mile non-motorized trail will connect Michigan’s town of New Buffalo to Chicago’s South Side (which ultimately connects to the Chicago Lakefront Trail). Twenty two miles of the trail are already built, and 32 miles are mapped out and fully funded. Funds for the last four mile stretch of the trail — from the Indiana state line to downtown New Buffalo — were just raised at the end of 2022, thanks to a fundraiser hosted by Friends of Berrien County Trails.

According to Friends of Berrien County Trails, the goal is to complete the Michigan portion of the Marquette Greenway in 2025. The entire trail, from Chicago to New Buffalo, could be finished in 2027.

How to get the most from your boat show experience.

It’s extremely easy to get swept up in the carnival-like atmosphere of a typical boat show, but it pays to do your homework and thoroughly examine even new boats before unwittingly making their problems your own. Here’s how to do it the right way.

Dress to inspect

As some checks may involve cockpit crawling and bilge diving, wear comfortable clothing and shoes. A flashlight and possibly a pair of lightweight coveralls will help you get down and dirty. As most dealers request you remove your shoes prior to boarding a new boat, slip-on type shoes will save you some time.

Stay organized

Boats can blur together during the course of a busy show, so use a phone, tablet or pen and paper (along with plenty of photos) to help you organize and keep track of individual boat details for review afterwards.

Design and layout

Step back and view the boat as a whole. Is it ergonomically designed? Are the cockpit, helm and interior spaces laid out to allow a natural flow while moving through the vessel? Can specific areas be used without blocking access to the rest of the interior?

Take an imaginary test drive. Are all controls, instrumentation and electronics within view and easy reach of the helm? Is there room at the helm for future electronic installations? How about visibility from the helm — is it good while seated and standing? Is there sufficient seating? Are backrests at a comfortable angle, and is there plenty of legroom?

Lie in the bunks, stand in the galley and sit on the toilet; are they comfortable and functional or seemingly designed for someone with Area 51 body dimensions? Is the interior of the boat adequately lit and well ventilated, with good air exchange in lockers and other storage areas (to promote quick drying and prevent mold and mildew)? What about available storage? Is it sufficient for your needs, be it an occasional overnighter or extended cruise?

Quality of construction

Start by walking around the boat and inspecting the hull for abnormalities (dimples, bulges, stress cracks) while verifying that the hull-to-deck joint is uniform and free from irregularities. Press on the

hull at various areas to gauge how much it flexes; does it look and (more importantly) feel solid?

Lift up floorboards, open lockers and remove cabinet drawers to gain as much access as possible to interior spaces. Are hatches finished on the inside, as well as the outside? Check that cabinets are firmly attached to the hull and that large items (refrigerators, microwaves, etc.) are securely mounted with adequately sized brackets and hardware to prevent movement in rough seas.

Check construction of the hull-to-deck joint from inside (it can typically be sighted at the bow anchor rode storage area or cockpit lockers). Is the joint bolted and caulked/glued together or fiber-glassed over, or does it use screws or pop rivets (both of which produce a weaker joint). Look for gaps and bulges, which may be an indication of poor fit or construction.

Structural bulkheads should be bonded to the hull with multiple layers of fiberglass tabbing (3 inches minimum). Bulkhead to hull joints should also employ filets or radiuses to eliminate localized stress points or “hard spots” in the hull, which can lead to fiberglass cracking and damage.

Accessibility and ease of maintenance

Open the engine hatch and note the location of items you’ll need access to on a regular basis: Dipsticks, coolant reservoirs, oil filters, sparkplugs, etc.

Locate all seacocks below the waterline. Can you physically reach them? Can they be fully opened and closed, or are they blocked by hoses, stringers or other obstacles? What about the batteries — are they securely mounted and located in an area that provides access for both routine maintenance and replacement?

How about fuel tank accessibility for inspection and repairs should problems arise? Models with removable deck panels above the fuel tank offer the best option should the tank need replacing, but keep in mind that the caulking for the panel must be maintained and occasionally renewed to prevent water from leaking onto the top of the tank, causing corrosion.

Boat shows are a great place to search for special deals, incentives and rebates when buying a new boat. They also offer an easy way to view and physically compare a number of different models and brands at the same time. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and roll up your sleeves to get the best deal possible. ★

New marine tech to look for at this season’s boat shows.

This year promises to be a year of innovations and announcements from manufacturers of boats, engines and electronics. With supply chain disruptions and COVID slowing things down over the last couple of years, it seems many manufacturers have been holding back on new product releases until now. Boat shows throughout 2023 will be the perfect venues for displaying the latest and greatest technology in boating, and there are a few new products worth looking out for at these shows.

Hybrid systems

With the increasing popularity of electrification in the auto world, the marine industry is working diligently to move in that direction as well. While electric boats and electric outboard offerings are expanding, so too are electric hybrid onboard systems.

Brunswick recently announced its new Fathom e-Power System. The result of a collaboration between several Brunswick-owned companies within the Navico Group, this new system is designed to eliminate the need for an onboard generator. Initially available as an option in new Brunswick boats with kits designed for specific craft and power sources, this system will eventually be offered and available to retrofit into an existing craft.

Utilizing ever more capable lithium batteries, these power systems enable the boater to monitor and control electrical output to a point that they can enjoy a day or weekend on the water without having to fire up a generator or be hooked up to shore power. With lithium batteries from Mastervolt at the heart of these systems, users can enjoy electric power like never before.

“Lithium batteries for marine applications have gained substantial traction in the last decade,” says Eric Lindquist, VP and general manager of power systems at Navico Group. “They last longer, charge faster, reduce weight and maximize space, as well as save time and money in the long run — all while minimizing negative impacts on the environment.”

But capable batteries aren’t all that make up this system. There is effective power monitoring that can shut off unnecessary equipment and conserve power where and when needed, as well as send power to where it’s most needed and effective. When combined with a high-output alternator, as found on Mercury’s new V10 and V12 Verado outboards,

simply running these engines either at idle speeds or underway, they can top up power, extending time away from generators or shore power.

Electric outboards

Expect to see more all-electric outboards at shows this year. Mercury has stated they will be making multiple announcements in 2023 regarding their concept electric outboard, the Avator. Displayed at various shows and events in 2022, the Avator was emphasized as only a concept. Developed from the ground up (not a modification or redesign of a combustion engine) this small outboard could develop into a series of all-electric outboards that will power smaller craft, all while utilizing swappable lithium batteries. Mercury also recently displayed concepts of power control displays and throttles for these small electric motors and even had a pontoon rigged with the concept system.

Manufacturers such as Torqeedo and Vision Marine Technologies already have outboards on the market. Four Winns recently announced a new 22-foot bowrider model for 2023, sporting Vision Marine’s E-Motion 180-hp outboard. The all-new H2e model is the first all-electric production bowrider on the market. It utilizes a complete propulsion, battery and battery management system that is scaled perfectly to the vessel. Utilizing a high-voltage battery system to provide the power needed from the 180-hp engine and a rapid charge system, the H2e can provide a fun-filled day on the water.

Other top-tier outboard manufacturers such as Yamaha will also have boats available in 2023 with its HARMO electric outboard. The first boat to market with the Harmo unit is the Italian-manufactured Respiro by Venmar. It seems there will be other models coming online this year with the innovative electric powerplant, so watch for them at the shows.

Improved tech

Show visitors will see new and improved live view sounders and fish finders, such as Lowrance’s new HD Pro and Active Target 2, as well as more system integration and control through multifunction displays. There will also be an emphasis on power efficiency and electrification. The biggest news at these shows, however, will be the shift to electric, and electric hybrid power and systems. ★

How to safely store, use and dispose of flares.

If you boat in U.S. coastal or ocean waters, territorial seas, the Great Lakes, or in connected waterways up to two miles wide, you must carry USCG-approved signaling devices and three unexpired flares. There are a few exemptions: Boats under 16 feet, manually propelled boats, those in regattas or parades, and open sailboats under 26 feet without motors.

Inland boating requires handheld red flares and/or aerial flares, and orange smoke flares for offshore excursions. Boaters traveling in Canadian or international waters should also carry SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) approved handheld smoke and aerial flares that meet minimum international requirements.

Flares are marked with a certification and an expiration date that ends 42 months after being manufactured. Having expired flares for backup is a good idea, but keep them separate from unexpired ones. Being caught without “good” flares onboard may result in a fine of up to $1,100.

Pyrotechnic flare types

Handheld cardboard tube flares have been around for 50 years. They are designed to produce flames or smoke with a burn time, and the distance they’re seen varies. Orange smoke flares are for daylight use, while red and white flares are primarily used at night. A typical pack of four flares costs about $45.

Another handheld type uses a steel tube housing with a cord that’s pulled upward for red smoke, or downward for orange smoke. Igniting a red or orange flare without an emergency is illegal.

Flare guns (launchers) and aerial flares emit a red or white smoke trail, or they can launch a parachute with red smoke. Unfortunately, in some states flare guns are considered illegal firearms and must be stored unloaded. A flare launcher with four cartridges costs about $68.

Using pyrotechnic flares

Pyrotechnic flares are dangerous even for the experienced boaters, so know how to use them before an emergency happens.

1. Hold red flares 45-degrees outward, past the leeward side of the boat, so the slag does not drip on your hand, on combustible materials, or the boat. Then ignite the flare. Flares burn at excessively high temperatures that instantly boil water — water cannot extinguish it.

2. Shoot aerial flares after identifying possible rescue vessels. Aim leeward and prepare to use other flares.

3. Flare guns can be heavy. An Orion 12-gauge flare gun weighs 7 pounds, and it may take two hands to keep it steady. Aerial flares are launched by an explosive charge, which is considered ammunition. Sometimes a “hang fire” occurs, and the flare doesn’t go off, so wait 30 seconds before ejecting the cartridge.

Expired flare disposal

What do you do with expired flares? There’s no easy answer. Currently, no single U.S. agency provides flare disposal. Local fire or police departments that have burn units, bomb squads or deal with ammunition or fireworks disposal may take expired flares.

Sometimes the Coast Guard Auxiliary (CGAUX. ORG), or U.S. Power Squadrons (USPS.ORG) will hold flare safety workshops; contact them to use your expired flares.

Electronic flares

The need to produce safer, effective flares led to the development of self-contained electronic flares. In 2016, Sirius Signal introduced the first USCG-approved electronic flare. Today, there are at least four companies that produce electronic flares: Sirius Signal, ACR, Ocean Signal and ODEO (Omni Directional Electrical Optical). The products differ in shape, size and weight, and cost between $80-$300. Expect a durable, waterproof and buoyant casing, SOS signaling, and bright LED lights with long-distance visibility (six to 10 nautical miles is common) over a long period (20-60 hours in a single use). Using a battery source, these flares are less hazardous and easier to handle while increasing the chance of rescue and survival.

The successful use of electronic flares morphed into personalized versions: EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) and PLBs (Personal Locator Beacons) that may be attached to life jackets.

Pros to electronic flares include being easy to use and replace; they float and don’t need to be stored in a waterproof container; and some are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Cons include the initial expense; they need fresh batteries and should be stored indoors; and they must be FCC-compliant first, and also have a visual signal flag and/or whistle for daytime use. ★

Ten tips for the 2023 winter/spring boat show season.

When we think about winter boat shows, most of us likely think of New York, as well as Great Lakes classics like Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis and Toronto. As they all take place in January, you might think you’ve missed the boat for this year, both literally and figuratively. That’s most definitely not the case. A robust calendar of boat shows extends from early February until the end of April, and while some will appeal to those seeking to get out of Dodge for a mini-vacation, others are closer to home.

If you’re new to the boat show circuit, as are roughly a quarter of all show-goers, we’ve put together a few pro tips to help you navigate your first experience. And if you’re a veteran who hasn’t walked a convention center or wandered the docks since pre-COVID, this just might be a valuable refresher.

Now, do a little homework, plan your getaway and get out there — it’s time to imagine your 2023 boating season, and lay the groundwork for bringing it to life.

#1 Set a realistic budget.

Before choosing your destination and making travel arrangements, consider all potential expenses, including transportation, parking and meals. Lodging costs are likely to be higher close to the show, so be sure to review options a bit farther away. It might be worth the commute if your savings are substantial.

#2 Plan your transportation.

On the other hand, if you stay in a central location, you’ll be able to enjoy a later breakfast and a short, easy stroll to the show location. Farther away, that’s not the case. If traffic, parking headaches and extra walking are not up your alley, investigate your transportation options ahead of time. These might include ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft, taxis, shuttles or even city buses.

#3 Create a game plan for each show day. Boat shows aren’t only about exhibitors. If you’ll be visiting as a family or with a group, search the show website or app (if available) to find must-do activities, presentations and demos.

Think of this as Disneyland for the recreational boating set. To avoid being overwhelmed, put together a schedule with exhibitors and activities grouped by proximity and/or start times. That way, you can maximize what you see and do each day, and you’ll leave satisfied rather than exhausted and cranky.

#4 Wear comfortable shoes. Enough said.

#5 Stash your loot.

You’re going to pick up a lot of giveaways, from catalogs and spec sheets to koozies, hats, key fobs and more. Show loot is fun. Lugging that loot around with you all day long, however, is not. If the show location doesn’t have lockers, bring a small roll-aboard bag. And don’t be surprised if people are eyeing you enviously by the end of the day.

#6 Dress appropriately.

If you’re staying far from the show, you may try to wear clothing and shoes that will endure the abuse of a long day and still feel fresh for a night on the town. Don’t make this rookie mistake, especially with dress shoes (see No. 4).

Comfort is key, as are layers. If you’re too warm or too cold, you can adjust, and that roll-aboard bag will come in particularly handy (see No. 5).

#7 Have a predetermined meeting place. It happens all the time at a boat show: You have a bad cellphone signal, the call drops, or there is

simply too much noise to hear the person on the other end. If members of your group would like to see different things, pretend it’s 1985: Set up a predetermined meeting place for later in the day or in case you’re accidentally separated.

#8 Business on weekdays, party on weekends.

Do your serious product research on a weekday, when salespeople have more time to talk with you and offer personal tours of their boats and booths. Save the fun and festivities for the weekend, which will be awash in special events for the understandably larger crowds.

#9 Focus on the right boat.

Before you leave home, discuss what kind of boaters you are, and which boats will best meet the needs and interests of all family members. Then, make a list of companies who make that particular type of boat so you can visit their booths. Planning ahead means avoiding expensive mistakes.

Four Winns TH36

A stand out.

At a glance, the all-new outboard catamaran stands out from its peers,” says Martin Meyer, product manager for Four Winns. And one look at this venerated builder’s latest model is plenty of reason to get up close and personal with the new multi-hulled TH36 outboard.

It’s not every time that I can do a sea trial and have the owner onboard. While touring the boat with them, you can dig a bit deeper, and the owner can tell you the whys, whats and hows of the yacht’s design, functions and features. In this case, I was also able to spend the day onboard and catch some time with the owner after the sea trial.

Fortunately for me, we tested a new Marlow Yachts 58E. More fortunate is that the owner, Jeff Saplis, was eager to expound on his third Marlow (first a 49, then a 53, now the 58). Saplis had some key features to point out, which fit into his lifestyle and desires.

Past Dictates Present

As a former restaurateur and a very social guy with an engaging personality, the 58E’s country kitchen’s layout was important. To offer more space, there is no lower helm station, but a large U-shape dinette located underneath the forward windows. With close proximity to the galley and commanding views out the windows, it’s evident that this will be a key gathering point for those onboard. Twin bar stools offer additional seating at the high-gloss teak dining table or grab one and sit at the counter. A nice touch are the electric blinds.

A U-shape galley keeps appliances within easy reach. A full-size GE oven, Monogram four-burner induction flat cooktop with pot rails, Sub-Zero premium exhaust vent and four Sub-Zero 30-inch fridge/freezer drawers allow Saplis to provision what he needs and create what he wants. Double recessed sinks and fore and aft custom Vetrostone counters offer plenty of prep space, while upper and lower cabinets and drawers provide tons of storage space. Elsewhere is a Sub-Zero ice machine and two additional freezers.

Time to chill

In the salon, the focus is on relaxation, as evidenced by the layout. Long port and starboard couches are comfortable and roomy. What may not be evident to the untrained eye is that the couches are situated right to the outer walls, offering more interior space. That’s because Marlow doesn’t run ducting and vent lines behind the seats but created vertical air lockers in the aft corners to handle the flow. This allows the seats to be pushed outward a bit more, yielding a roomier feel to the salon. Saplis opted for no dining area in the salon. “I don’t want to eat in the living room,” he explains.

Central is a gloss teak coffee table/storage unit with ottomans tucked into each end. Each ottoman is movable and has storage in the base. The overhead teak handrail is a piece of art in itself. Doublewide doors open to the aft deck, extending the social aspects of the main deck.

With a central table and transom bench seating, the aft deck is protected by the flybridge deck overhang. Twin aft gates lead to the integrated swim platform. Port and starboard side gates allow for side boarding and full walkaround decks make for easy line handling.

Fun up top

While exploring the 58E, you get the feel that this is a larger yacht, especially on the flybridge deck. The three-sided enclosed helm has glass front and side windows and a removable aft curtain, with AC and heat systems for all-year cruising. An aft corner settee with table and a

lounge seat to port makes this another inviting social area.

As you would expect, the yacht can be tricked out with any kind of electronics thanks to the spacious console and overhead switch and indicator banks. Saplis fitted his yacht with three 22-inch Garmin multifunction displays that handle his navigation and system needs, 20-hp Side-Power bow and stern thrusters, Naiad fin stabilizers, dual Icom VHF radios and Volvo Penta engine displays.

On the open aft deck is a mini galley with grill, sink, fridge and storage. Store the dinghy up here with the 1,000-pound davit crane or set up lounge chairs for a relaxing oasis. During our test ride, this was my favorite place to chill.

Living space

On the other end of the spectrum, the lower deck has three staterooms down a curved staircase. The full-beam primary stateroom has over a dozen drawers and lockers for clothes and supplies. The head is simple with a single sink and a tiled wall in the shower stall. Discreetly placed in the primary is a hallway with access to the engine room (a great idea for the owner-operated vessel) and a laundry area with separate full-sized washer/dryer.

One thing missing from the primary is a TV. Saplis explains that he and his wife did not want one, as this room is for sleeping and relaxation.

Forward is a VIP with centerline berth and direct access to the shared head. Midship is a double berth stateroom. An access hatch in the foyer deck is to the

mechanical space that houses the bow thruster motor, pumps, piping and more.

Power abounds

Speaking of the engine room, there’s also access from the large hydraulic transom door. Saplis opted for twin Volvo D13 diesel engines producing 1,000 hp each, coupled to ZF drives. These powerplants are smaller than comparative Cat engines and allow for full walk-around access to the side-mounted ancillary systems, including two 21.5 kW generators. Punching through the seas, the 58E saw a wide-open throttle of 24.5 knots, so you know you can safely get to port if necessary. Cruise at 18.8 knots for a fuel burn of 62 gph, or really extend your range at 9 knots, consuming only 9.5 gph. The point is this is a versatile combination of hull and engine package that delivers what you want.

Just aft you will also find a space that can be designated as a beach club, creating a swim/social area off the swim platform. Or it doubles as a crew quarters, complete with a head for those trips when you need an extra hand.

The big draw with the Marlow Yachts 58E is curb appeal. It has a commanding profile with gentle lines from stem to stern. A Portuguese bridge offers protection on sporty days and has gate access to the foredeck. Non-skid decks abound, and access to the ground gear is easy. Saplis opted for easy maintenance, so there’s no exterior wood. With a dark gray Awlgrip hull that accentuates the lapstrake hull, Saplis also had a ceramic coating applied to the entire yacht, eliminating the need for

regular waxing. Transiting the decks is safe thanks to stout railings and handles.

Some other niceties found on the Marlow 58E include a pop-up throttle/thruster station to starboard, carbon fiber helm steering wheel (looks very cool and is solid), Clear Mate water filtration for drinkable water onboard, Stidd helm and companion seats, and more.

You can learn something from a couple who has cruised extensively, knows what to include on a yacht, has customized their own Marlows, and is happy with the outcome each time. It’s a benefit when you can hear it from an owner directly. Jeff Saplis knows what he’s talking about. H

GRADY-WHITE Adventure 218

History guides this reimagined classic walkaround.

When the legendary Eddie Smith purchased Grady-White Boats in 1968 from Glen Grady and Don White, who founded the company in 1959, he clearly had in mind the needs of families who loved boating and sportfishing in the sometimes wild, open waters of the Carolina coasts. Smith’s reputation for building rugged and seaworthy coastal fishing boats grew rapidly. Unsinkable foam flotation, self-bailing cockpits and insulated, overboard-draining fishboxes were but a few of the features that anglers asked for and got. It wasn’t until the 1974 New York Boat Show’s introduction of the company’s pioneering walkaround cabin model — called the Grady-White Hatteras 204-C Overnighter — with its fore- and side-deck encircling walkways around a protective cuddy, that boat owners realized how family centric the Grady-White name had become.

THE RIDE’S THE THING

Even the earliest Grady-White models paid requisite homage to local waters with well-flared bows typical of Carolina-built sportfishing designs, and were known for a dry ride when wind and waves kicked up. In the early 1990s, the company collaborated with the renowned C. Raymond Hunt & Associates to develop the SeaV 2 hull shape, a continuously variable V-shape that begins sharp at the stem and changes to slightly flatter surfaces aft, ending in a still-significant deadrise angle at the transom of 19 degrees or more.

This was forward thinking from Smith and his colleagues at Grady-White, who had seen the future and knew that included higher-horsepower outboards and faster speeds for experienced owners. Paired with two substantial lifting strakes on either side of the centerline and two significant chines, all of which begin near the raked stem, the hull shape added to the company’s reputation for building dry-running boats that produced a comfortable ride for the owners and crew across a wide range of wind and wave conditions.

THEN AND NOW

Compared to the 204-C Overnighter, the all-new Adventure 218 is the next evolutionary step forward in form and function, with advanced engineering and state-of-the-art technologies brought to bear, producing a family oriented design offering more space, comfort and amenities than ever before. With its wide, highway-legal beam, the Adventure 218 offers interior space that will be the envy of every

owner in the 21-foot range. Swim and dockside boarding platforms flank an engine well meant for a single, high-output Yamaha Four-Stroke outboard. Twin aft seats are equipped with Grady-White’s patented swing-open backrests for easy boarding, with a deep, four-step swim ladder on the starboard platform.

Step down from the seat and into the cockpit, which is a safe 25 inches deep and equipped with bolsters, and the family boating features multiply rapidly. Bottom cushions of the rear seats are mounted to locker tops that flip over to self-store and add solid, non-skid footing for standing and casting. An optional pop-up ski pylon adds to the fun potential for towed water toys, but stores flush and out of the way when fishing takes the forefront.

Horizontal rod racks are found along both sides under the gunwales, six in all, as well as four in the gunwales, while the optional, stylish and well-built painted aluminum hardtop offers four more in addition to a storage net, spreader lights, and plates for radar and outrigger mounting. Two forward, aft-facing seats in the cockpit house 100- and 106-quart fishboxes port and starboard, respectively, with overboard drains. There is an option for the port fishbox to be converted into a 25-gallon livewell. In the cockpit sole, there are two dry storage lockers that lift out for easy access to batteries and pumps.

COMMAND AND CONTROL AHEAD

Without a doubt, the amount of comfort for the helmsman and companion are key to the success of the Adventure 218. A pair of comfortable, deluxe

seats are standard, though upgraded seating that includes more adjustment and, in one case, flip-up bolsters, will be wise option choices. Grady-White designers have included a larger console for flush-mounted electronics, along with a factoryinstalled stereo system with touch-screen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A compass, tilting stainless steel wheel with steering knob, and controls for the hydraulic trim tabs are standard.

Also standard are a canvas Bimini top with front and side curtains and boot, but the optional hardtop will likely add functionality for many owners. Stainless steel footrests and a companion seat grabrail add comfort and security.

CUDDY COMFORT, FOREDECK FUNCTIONALITY

Besides providing a shaded, well-ventilated place for youngsters to get out of the sun during a long day on the water, the Adventure 218 cuddy provides clear sitting headroom for tall adults. And while it doesn’t offer the kind of volume to include a private head compartment, the cabin door provides instant privacy for those needing to use the standard portable head (with an optional deck pumpout) beneath one of the seats.

Foredeck cushions are a thoughtful option for those who want to relax in the sun when the Adventure 218 is at rest. And while there is an anchor locker in the bow to keep the hook out of sight and mind, Grady-White offers a stainless steel bow roller for those who routinely need quick access to secure ground tackle.

PERFORMANCE

There are two reliable power choices for the Adventure 218, both made by long-time propulsion partner Yamaha. According to Yamaha and Grady-White factory test data, the 200 Yamaha Four-Stroke can offer a 39.4-mph top speed at 5900 RPM and an optimum cruise of 24.5 mph at 4100 RPM. Fuel consumption at optimum cruise is 7.6 gph, or 3.2 mpg. For those requiring more power, the 250 Yamaha Four-Stroke can offer a top speed of 45.3 mph at 5900 RPM, and an optimum cruise of 29.7 mph at 4000 RPM. Your results may vary, depending on loading, bottom condition, and other factors, naturally.

Whichever power you select, and whatever options you find most appealing, expect a wonderful experience afloat in the new Adventure 218. The Grady-White crew is dedicated to continuing the name that has become a legend over many decades of commitment to excellence. ★

A Perfect Ten

Whether you boat on the open ocean, Great Lakes or inland waterways, Mercury Marine’s latest offering in its Verado family of outboards — an industry-first V10 — was purpose-built for the outboard market sweet-spot of 350 to 400 hp and deserves a second look for anyone considering a new boat or repower purchase.

“If you look at the versatility that this engine has to offer, from an aluminum, V-bottom walleye fi shing boat all the way up to a quad or quint center console, we had to design it to be versatile,” says Mercury president Chris Drees during a week-long Brunswick Corp. new product and technology showcase held at Mercury’s iconic “secret” test facility, Lake X, near Kissimmee, Florida. “Whether that be weight, top speed, all those factors played a role into making this fit the need in the marketplace, and that’s what we did. The variety of this application is so broad, I think the engineers hit the mark perfectly on what it needed to be.”

Raising the bar

The V10 is a naturally aspirated 5.7L displacement quad-cam design, calibrated to deliver full performance on 87-octane fuel and featuring efficiency-enhancing technologies like a closed-loop fuel system and Advanced Range Optimization. Adaptive Speed Control maintains engine RPM despite changes in load or conditions, making climbing large swells easier and cruising at low speeds smoother. Transient Spark Technology electronically adjusts spark timing to optimize low-end power.

Eliminating the supercharger that is the heart of previous Verado models, the V10 is quieter by 45% and lighter than its V6, V8 and V12 siblings, and offers technology that could eliminate traditional onboard generators.

“Mercury understands the boater better than anyone out there. This is testament to that, right here,” says Dale Stroschein, a fishing guide working out of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, pointing to a static display of the engine. “I don’t care if it’s waterskiing, offshore racing or the sport fishermen who go out on Lake Michigan, they all use horsepower differently, and Mercury just keeps raising the bar. This is like going back and watching ‘The Jetsons’.”

Stroschein, a former competitive angler affiliated with Mercury since 1988, says that many boaters misunderstand horsepower, explaining it goes beyond speed.

“Safety is a big part of horsepower. In the Midwest, we deal with big water on the Great Lakes,” he says. “What people don’t understand is being a fishing guide on one of the nastiest bodies of water there is — Lake Michigan — [with larger horsepower] we are able to control the boat in big seas. That’s a big part of fishing. If we were to only go on really nice days, we’d never go fishing. So, there are times when you just get caught out in storms and when the wave starts controlling you and the boat, you are now in trouble. That’s from a lack of horsepower. These larger horsepower motors allow us to be safer on the water.”

And safety can equate to peace of mind, especially for the number of new boaters who have entered the sport in the past three years, says Ron Enslen of Caymas Boats, who was demoing a 28-foot hybrid bay boat.

“With this new gearcase and lower unit, this boat will run at 20 or 22 mph on plane, no cavitation, no lope, nice and smooth,” he says. “So when you’re cruising a waterway with your family in the bow, on plane at low speed, there is no reason to be uncomfortable. I think that’s going to be an even better seller for us.”

Laser-focused design

The consensus among fi shing guides and OEM boat builders testing the product for the first time pointed to the outboards’ fuel efficiency — averaging about two miles to the gallon regardless of application — and the torque, which project engineers call essential for lifting today’s heavier hulls.

And while the package makes it easier for many styles of boat to reduce the number of outboards hanging from the transom, one builder, Intrepid Powerboats, has gone from twin 600-hp Verados to triple 400s on its 25,000-pound 41-foot Valor.

“We’re seeing about 4 or 5 mph difference at that top end,” proclaims Joe Brenna, VP of customer support for the builder. “I think the triple 400s will be a sweet spot for someone who doesn’t want to have a V12. It’s probably going to be the best setup for future resale value, which everyone should keep in mind when buying or building a boat. I’m in love with them. They’re quiet and they have a lot of torque. Everything on it is robust and it’s been engineered very nicely.”

The V10 is not a detuned version of the V12, which Mercury VP of Product Development and Engineering Tim Reid explains was a laserfocused design for heavy luxury sport cruisers and offshore fishing boats.

“We had to step back and really go back to clean sheets and say ‘how do we hit the breadth of product so that we can get as much volume as possible?’“ Reid says. “The engine, gearcase, the entire mounting structure and the propellers were all engineered simultaneously. We needed a bigger gearcase to support the torque and power that we produce. We designed it as a system, we’re targeting a sweet spot of roughly 50- to 60-mph boats for peak performance and for fuel economy, and then we verified that this gearcase would go up to 90 [mph] and would also go down [in horsepower] nicely.”

The V10’s hydrodynamic gearcase — engineered to improve performance and durability across multiple applications while also maximizing fuel efficiency — has spawned an all-new line of Revolution X propellers specifically for the outboard.

The engine also features embedded technology that will allow builders to use electrifi cation battery packs along with sister company Navico’s Fathom e-power system to make it much easier to eliminate the traditional onboard generator, further reducing weight and onboard noise.

“It’s such a popular horsepower range with a variety of applications,” Drees adds. “This really hits the market with what customers and OEMs were asking for.”

It’s obvious from space. Nighttime photos of Michigan shared by NASA show the state’s most densely populated and well-lit cities and regions. But the majority of the Upper Peninsula is in darkness.

Surrounded on three sides by the Great Lakes Michigan, Huron and Superior, the

heavily forested U.P. is enveloped by deep, dark night skies. Its more than 15,000 square miles — about one-third of the state’s entire land area — are home to just 3% of Michigan’s population. The conditions are ideal for stargazing and the possibility of catching the aurora borealis.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.), known for spectacular star shows and one of the best places in the country to catch the aurora borealis, is home to a new certified International Dark Sky Park.

In June 2022, the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) certified Michigan’s third International Dark Sky Park and first in the U.P., at Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Copper Harbor. The Keweenaw Dark Sky Park is one of 195 IDA parks worldwide, and joins several Dark Sky Parks around the Great Lakes region, including: Headlands Dark Sky Park on Lake Michigan, west of Mackinaw City; Dr. T.K. Lawless Dark Sky Park in the southwest corner of Michigan; Geauga Observatory Park in Ohio along Lake Erie; and Newport State Park in Wisconsin’s Door County.

Stairway to the stars

Attaining Dark Sky Park status involves multiple steps and an application that includes meeting specific requirements, providing community support and a commitment to maintaining Dark-Sky standards. In the Keweenaw Peninsula, it started with John Mueller, who purchased the historic Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in 2018. The rustic main structure and two dozen cozy cabins are built of logs hewn on site as part of the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration programs. The project included a nine-hole golf course carved from the 167-acre wilderness.

Mueller respects the history and uniqueness of the remote property, which opened in 1934 and is recognized on national and state historic registers.

“We have some good bones,” he says of the physical structures and the setting. “The pillars of this historic wilderness resort are outdoor recreation, rustic worldly food and education. Education is how things grow and improve.”

One of Mueller’s early priorities was to conduct an energy audit. “Our goal was to learn,” he says of the study. It resulted in replacing 28 intrusive, light-polluting street lights with a Dark-Sky-compliant, energy-efficient

MICHIGAN’S DARK SKY PRESERVES

In addition to Michigan’s three International Dark Sky Parks, the Michigan legislature has designated six Dark Sky Preserves at state parks and recreation areas across the Lower Peninsula; four of them are along the Lake Huron shore. The six preserves include: Lake Hudson Recreation Area (Clayton, Lenawee County); Negwegon State Park (Harrisville, Alcona County); Port Crescent State Park (Port Austin, Huron County); Rockport Recreation Area (Rogers City, Presque Isle County); Thompson’s Harbor State Park (Rogers City, Presque Isle County) and Wilderness State Park (Carp Lake, Emmet County).

Although without official Dark Sky designations, Michigan also has three national parks that offer spectacular celestial viewing: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan in the northwest area of the Lower Peninsula, and on Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Isle Royale National Park.

“We wanted better lighting,” Mueller says. “To be able to have the Dark-Sky certification is a bonus.”

Fun, joyous and adventuresome

The lodge property now measures 560 acres, and is surrounded on three sides by 31,000 wilderness acres recently acquired by The Nature Conservancy, which will protect and keep the sprawling tract open for recreational use by the public. That is an additional draw to the region and a boon to Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, which strives to provide a “fun, joyous and adventuresome wilderness experience.”

“Our mission is helping people get closer to nature and the natural environment,” Mueller says.

The lodge and Dark Sky Park are open year-round, and offer a loan of a telescope, maps for best viewing locations, and activities such as night sky photography workshops, stargazing parties and moonlit snowshoe hikes. One informational session focused on dark sky light management at the property, and included suggestions that individuals can implement to reduce their own “light trespassing.”

Education is a cornerstone of IDA’s efforts. Its website informs about the effects of artificial light on wildlife, the environment and human health, and the benefits of minimizing light pollution. “Night Sky Heritage” points out the importance over the centuries of constellations, planets and the moon to religion and philosophy, mariners, artists and writers.

“For millennia, stars have guided us, given us hope,

and connected us as beings on one planet in one spinning galaxy, riding through time and space, light and dark, together,” says IDA Director of Engagement Bettymaya Foott. “If we lose the night sky, we lose a deep part of what it means to be human on Earth. By reaching out together, to shield or dim lights, or simply to flip off the switch, we practice using our power to do big, ambitious things on behalf of ourselves and future generations.” H

On the northwest shore of Lake Michigan are two tiny Wisconsin communities — Algoma and Kewaunee — with a huge reputation for sportfishing. Go deep with one of the area’s 50-some fishing charters or cast your own line into tranquil tributaries. Count Viking River Cruises among those en route to the pretty but low-key waterfront.

welve miles separate Algoma and Kewaunee, whose combined population barely exceeds 6,000 residents in Kewaunee County. The area has attracted fishermen and nature lovers since Native Americans first inhabited the area.

What the county’s name means depends on the source. “River of the lost,” “woods river,” “go around” and “prairie chicken” are among the definitions on record.

The Potawatomi lived here and did business with French explorers and fur traders, including Jean Nicolet. In the 1830s, a decade before Wisconsin statehood, their village was settled and developed as Kewaunee because of rumors of gold in riverside marshland.

Only iron pyrite — Fool’s Gold — was discovered during the rush of fortune hunters, but the vicinity was truly rich in another resource: Lumber. Ninety percent of the county was thick forest in 1834, and that dropped to 20% a few years later as trees were harvested, milled and transported via schooner or sure-footed horses.

Farming by European immigrants replaced forestry on the cleared acreage, and an additional opportunity became obvious: Commercial fishing, especially after Orrin Warner and John Hughes sailed into the area to fish in 1851. They took shelter during a storm and would later settle the lakeside as Wolf River (renamed Ahnapee, then Algoma).

As early as 1859, a local newspaper raved about all the whitefi sh being caught on the adjoining Ahnapee River. What Native Americans did to supplement their fur trade turned into a major industry.

Heavy-duty pier construction brought a surge of steamer ship traffic. Two ships

could be loaded at once in Kewaunee, where the 300-foot Pere Marquette was among those ferrying railroad cars with everything from coal to flour to Michigan. Besides lighthouses, storm warning flags were flown outside a 75-foot-tall tower at the congregational church.

Lake Michigan inspired shipbuilding too. Kewaunee Shipyards and Engineering (now Kewaunee Fabrications) built 80 vessels for the U.S. military during World War II and had its own 22-member band that played whenever a new vessel was launched.

Car ferries linked Kewaunee and Frankfort, Michigan, from 1892 to 1990. On land, state Highway 42 remains a quiet, scenic way to follow Lake Michigan toward popular Door County, instead of taking speedier Interstate 43.

The area’s low-key reputation begins to change this year. Kewaunee County will gain international attention as Algoma becomes a morning-to-late-afternoon port of call during Viking River Cruises’ 15-day excursions between Duluth, Minnesota and Toronto.

“We don’t usually see tourism coming from the lake side — it tends to work the other way around,” observes Ken Weinaug, Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce executive director.

Go fish

Algoma, nicknamed the Sportfishing Capital of the Great Lakes, is among the largest charter fishing ports on Lake Michigan. Why here? Lake Michigan deepens quickly in the Algoma-Kewaunee basin. Nearby state fisheries stock the Great Lake with millions of salmon and trout annually.

Kewaunee rivers attractive to fi shermen too. Public boat launches are plentiful; check with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for locations.

“Algoma is perennially one of the top ports for catching salmon and steelheads. We catch fish all summer long,” says Lee Haasch of Haasch Guide Services, an Algoma native and charter captain since 1985. “Captains work together and share information [about where to fish]. Cooperating with one another helps all of us.”

Charters accommodate true beginners to grizzled anglers, multiple generations of families to groups of veteran fishermen. Haasch says his charters typically venture two to four miles from harbor.

Not your thing? Buy smoked fish at LaFond’s Fish Market in Kewaunee, the area’s only remaining commercial fishery, selling locally caught chubs and whitefish. Owner Andy LaFond Jr. can also custom-smoke your own catch; it’s a two-day process.

At Besadny Anadromous Fish Facility, two miles from Kewaunee, self-guided tours and underwater viewing windows show the work of collecting fish eggs, plus raising coho and Chinook salmon.

Wine and dine

Fish and fishing lure travelers, but Weinaug emphasizes that “there’s more to do than just put your boat in the water.”

Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery, von Stiehl Winery, was a brewery during Civil War times. Limestone caverns ferment and store wine instead of beer today. Also near the lake in downtown Algoma is Ahnapee Brewery’s taproom with small-batch beer.

Dining choices are classy to casual. On the shoreline and between the two communities

is Red’s Pub and Grill, where specials are fried fish on Friday and prime rib on Saturday.

In Algoma, savor steaks and seafood at century-old Hotel Stebbins. Homestead Kitchen and Tap, west of town, serves farm-totable ingredients in burgers, pizza and more.

In Kewaunee, Bucket Tavern, a century-old bar/grill, is known for charbroiled burgers. Fat cinnamon rolls and lattes are daily fare at The Bakery Bar, where customers also linger with sandwiches and craft beer. Other local favorites include the Ballering, the brand-new Wildflower Supper Club and Port O’ Call, with views of the river.

On the move? Harbor Express and Grill opens at 4 a.m. It’s a quick place to gas up boats (up to 35 feet) and buy breakfast sandwiches or Broasted chicken.

See and do

Pierhead lighthouses in Algoma and Kewaunee, each 40-plus feet tall, are beloved nautical beacons. Tugboat Ludington, a World War II vessel in Normandy for the D-Day invasion, is open May to October for self-guided tours in Kewaunee. Walk the halfmile boardwalk at Crescent Beach in Algoma. Both communities lovingly preserve their architectural past. On self-guided walking tour maps are a rich mix of Victorian-era houses and businesses in the Marquette Historic District of Kewaunee and downtown in Algoma (10 outdoor murals highlight local history).

Kewaunee’s outdoor grandfather clock, almost 36 feet tall and the largest in the world, marks one end of the 48-mile Ahnapee State Trail, popular for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Look for free music near the waterfront during summer. In Algoma’s Heritage Park,

next to the municipal marina, are Concerts in the Park on Thursdays. Harbor Park in Kewaunee hosts Music in the Park on Sundays. On Fridays and Saturdays are von Stiehl Winery’s Summer Concert Series. Within 10 miles are Pagel’s Ponderosa, among Wisconsin’s largest dairy farms and open for tours by reservation; Parallel 44 Vineyards and Winery, whose name refers to the latitude, ideal for grape growing; and Gib’s on the Lake, a lakefront Wisconsin supper club with German specialties.

Lambeau Field, home to the Green Bay Packers and open for tours, is roughly 35 miles from the Algoma-Kewaunee shoreline. Within 20 miles is the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, which attracts religious pilgrims as the nation’s only Vatican-acknowledged location of Virgin Mary apparitions.

Yacht Works bought, updated and upgraded a Kewaunee marina to sell, service and store a wide array of boats. The 127-slip dock with 44 campsites accommodates vessels up to 85 feet. Indoor and outdoor storage is offered as well. A recently installed 100ton boat hoist, constructed 27 miles north at Marine Travelift, is described as large enough to haul out “almost any pleasure boat on the Great Lakes.” Also on site is a 35-ton hoist.

At Algoma’s downtown municipal marina, open May through September, 50 seasonal slips offer electric/water hookups for boats up to 40 feet. Reservations are taken for daily, monthly and seasonal moorings, and there are double-launch ramps.

A Rare Find 1956 22'

Shepherd Sportsman.

A couple years ago I received a call about a wooden boat in a garage that had been sitting there for a while. The owner had passed away and the family had no interest in the boat. They wanted to know if anyone in the area was interested in an old wooden boat that needed to be restored. Someone thought of me since I have redone several Lymans through the years and completely restored my 1953 45-foot Chris-Craft Woodstock that my family enjoyed for 20 years

My son and I went to look at this boat, which was only about 20 miles from our house. When we arrived at the owner’s home and they opened the two-car garage door, there were actually two boats inside: A 14-foot Wolverine cold molded and a 22foot Shepherd Sportsman that had been in the garage since 1983!

As you can imagine, it was pretty dirty, but the overall condition of the boat wasn’t too bad. We loaded it up onto a flatbed truck and brought it back to my home shop. Over a period of about two years and a lot of cleaning, I replaced the complete transom, sheer plank and a number of sideboards, and refastened the entire bottom. The rest of the boat’s bottom was in very good condition since it had been stored inside for almost 40 years.

Shepherd boats were built out of

Honduras mahogany, which is a very rare wood but excellent for boat building. These boats were built in Canada near the St. Lawrence river in Niagara on the Lake. They have a high freeboard and are a good rough water dayboat. The boat is powered by a Chrysler M475 6-cylinder flathead with Zenith carburetors.

The engine was also in very good condition. After a compression check we found only two stuck valves. We pulled the head off and did a complete valve job and then a test run on the engine. The engine fired right up and ran perfectly.

I had many hours of sanding, varnishing and refinishing, and we had a new canvas Bimini made. A custom trailer was also made just for this boat. On our first launch, my sons, along with the gentleman who had originally told me about the boat, put her in the water and it went flawlessly! It was a dry ride and very comfortable with about a 25 mph cruising speed. The sound of the Chrysler flathead engine was beautiful.

These boats are very rare and I am so glad I had the chance to come across this one. We can’t wait to put her back in the water next summer to make some more memories.
